The 59th International Institute of Space Law (IISL) Colloquium on the Law of Outer Space was held from 27–30 September 2016 in Guadalajara, Mexico, in conjunction with the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC). Comprised of seven technical sessions and one session for interactive presentations, the Colloquium focused on a range of thematic issues in space law, and featured papers from almost seventy presenters. Topics discussed included the legal aspects related to the remote sensing principles, regional cooperation and Latin American space activities, large satellite constellations, space resource utilization, planetary defence, and spectrum management. The 8th Nandasiri Jasentuliyana Keynote Lecture was delivered by incoming IISL president Kai-Uwe Schrogl, entitled ‘Space Law and Diplomacy’. The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court semi-finals and world finals were also held in Guadalajara, as well the General Assembly of the IISL.

Drawing on the Papers of the International Colloquium of Romance Civilizations, Literatures and Languages (Bucharest, 14–27 Sept. 1959)—held under the aegis of the Romanian National Commission for unesco and of the Academy of the Popular Republic of Romania—as well as on an unpublished document from the private archive of Alphonse Dupront, the present article describes the visit to communist Romania made by the Sorbonne historian, the former director of the French Institute in Bucharest (1932–1940/1941).

The growing interest in the eastern part of the Hellenistic world has resulted in a number of recent papers, conferences, and books discussing the ebb and flow of cultural contact in previously under-explored regions. Developed from an international colloquium held in September 2009, this edited volume attempts to give an overview of as well as introduce new approaches to understanding the cultural engagement in the Hellenistic East ‘from Alexander to the Sassanids’. No mean feat, the book covers a variety of topics in 30 short chapters in both French and English, giving a true impression of the internationality of this work.

Commission 41 has been involved in one colloquium and one symposium since the last report:IAU Colloquium 91 on “The History of Oriental Astronomy” was held in New Delhi, November 13-16, 1985, preceding the XlXth General Assembly. Members of the scientific organizing committee were S.M.R. Ansari, E.S. Kennedy, D. King, R. Mercier, O. Pedersen, D. Pingree, G. Saliba, Xi Ze-Zong and K. Yabuuti. The colloquium was co-sponsored by the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science, and by a number of organizations in India: the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi, the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, and the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. The local organizing committee, chaired by G. Swarup, made possible a number of local excursions, including a conducted tour of the great stone open air observatory, built in the city by the enlightened Maharadjah Jai Singh in the 18th century. The colloquium brought 84 participants from 19 countries. 46 papers were presented of which 10 were invited, covering aspects of astronomy in the far east and middle east since the earliest civilizations. Papers from Colloquium 91 have now been published in book form: History of Oriental Astronomy, G. Swarup, A.K. Bag, and K.S. Shukla, editors, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, England, 1987. Contributions are divided into three broad categories: ancient astronomy and its characteristics, ancient elements and planetary models, and medieval astronomy. Within these are papers on the characteristics and achievements of early astronomy in the eastern half of the world, including inter-regional development and mutual influences, ancient data relating to eclipses, supernovae and comets, medieval astronomical developments, instruments and early observatories, and the interplay between observational and theoretical astronomy. A short introductory paper by the revered historian E.S. Kennedy opens the book, as it set the stage for the colloquium in New Delhi: “We find (astronomy) originating a few centuries before the Christian era in two disparate cultures, Mesopotamia and the Hellenistic world. From the Mediterranean it passed to India, there to flourish. Thence the centroid of activity moved westward, residing in the lands of Islam during medieval times, more recently in Europe. Now astronomical research is carried out throughout the entire world.”

The presented editorial summarizes in brief the efforts of ten (10) papers collected by the Special Issue (SI) “Condensed-Matter-Principia Based Information & Statistical Measures: From Classical to Quantum”. The SI called for papers dealing with condensed-matter systems, or their interdisciplinary analogs, for which well-defined classical statistical vs. quantum information measures can be inferred while based on the entropy concept. The SI has mainly been rested upon objectives addressed by an international colloquium held in October 2019, at the University of Science and Technology (UTP) Bydgoszcz, Poland (see http://zmpf.imif.utp.edu.pl/rci-jcs/rci-jcs-4/), with an emphasis placed on the achievements of Professor Gerard Czajkowski (PGC). PGC commenced his research activity with diffusion-reaction (open) systems under the supervision of Roman S. Ingarden (Toruń), a father of Polish synergetics, and original thermodynamic approaches to self-organization. The active cooperation of PGC mainly with German physicists (Friedrich Schloegl, Aachen; Werner Ebeling, Berlin) ought to be underlined. Then, the development of Czajkowski’s research is worth underscoring, moving from statistical thermodynamics to solid state theory, pursued in terms of nonlinear solid-state optics (Franco Bassani, Pisa), and culminating very recently with large quasiparticles, termed Rydberg excitons, and their coherent interactions with light.

The 32nd International Conference on Solution Chemistry (ICSC-32) was held 28 August-2 September 2011 in La Grande Motte, France. This conference series covers a wide range of topics related to solution chemistry, such as- thermodynamics, kinetics, and structure- polymers, colloids, interfaces, and membranes- bioinorganic, biophysical, and pharmaceutical problems- supramolecular assemblies and nanostructures- analytical and environmental aspects- solvents and solutions under extreme conditionsFive plenary lectures were given: “Electrochemistry, the challenge of 21st century: From living cells to energy production”, by Dr. Christian Amatore, Paris, France; “Ultrafast studies on chemical and biological systems”, by Prof. Majed Chergui, Lausanne, Switzerland; “Modelling ionic liquids”, by Prof. Paul Madden, Oxford, UK; “Structure and dynamics of liquids and solutions in confinement”, by Prof. Toshio Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Japan; “Natural ionic liquids and green solution chemistry”, by Prof. Dr. Werner Kunz, Regensburg, Germany.Two special lectures were given in the frame of the “Année Internationale de la Chimie”: “Solution chemistry and preservation of archeological wood: The case of Vasa”, by Prof. Ingmar Persson, Uppsala, Sweden; and “Molecular gastronomy: A solution chemistry problem”, by Hervé This, INRA, France.Twenty-one papers based on lectures presented at the ICSC-32 are included in this issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Chemical and physical processes in biological systems take place in an aqueous environment, and understanding of the properties of solutions is of major importance for advancements in science. Similarly, this holds true for many technologies, where solutions and liquids are in contact with various materials. All this makes the chemistry and physics of solutions one of the most important topics of physical chemistry.The advancements in this area of science are reviewed every second year through the series of world conferences under the title International Conference on Solution Chemistry (ICSC).The 29th International Conference on Solution Chemistry sponsored by IUPAC was held in Portorož, Slovenia, 20-25 August 2005. The conference was organized by the faculty of chemistry and chemical technology at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The ICSC has been held biannually since 1967 and under the present name since 1988. The meetings, which have been held in locations ranging from Debrecen (Hungary) to Vaals (Netherlands) and from Fukuoka (Japan) to Vichy (France), are organized by a 10-member international steering committee. The present chairperson of the committee is Prof. Ingmar Persson from the University of Uppsala in Sweden. Altogether, the 29th ICSC hosted almost 300 participants from 36 countries, including approximately 50 Ph.D. students who took advantage of the conference's reduced fees for students, and more than 40 accompanying family members.The theme of the conference was "the chemistry of solutions", but sessions were also held on supramolecular assemblies and nanostructures, interfaces, biophysical and pharmaceutical problems, aquatic chemistry, ionic liquids, and others. An array of eminent scientists from around the world gave plenary presentations and keynote lectures, and a broad spectrum of the research is reflected in the selection of papers presented in this issue.The first contribution entitled "Reactive intermediates in aqueous ozone decomposition: A mechanistic approach", by Fábián István (University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary) provides a detailed account of recent developments in mechanistic interpretation of aqueous ozone decomposition. Experimental complications with collecting reliable kinetic information for this system are illustrated via selected examples. It is also demonstrated how a complex kinetic model can be validated by studying the system under the specific experimental conditions.Ion-pairing is a classic topic of electrochemistry, and powerful tools such as the spectroscopic techniques UV/vis, NMR, and Raman are often used for the investigation of chemical speciation in solution. However, it is not widely recognized that such techniques do not always provide reliable information about ion association equilibria. Recent developments in this area of research are reviewed by Glenn Hefter (Murdoch University, Perth, Australia). In the paper entitled "When spectroscopy fails: The measurement of ion pairing", data are presented for metal ion/sulfate systems in aqueous solution that demonstrate the inadequacy of the major spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of systems that involve non-contact ion pairs.The next contribution, "Ionic liquids: A most promising research field in solution chemistry and thermodynamics", written by Andreas Heintz and Christiane Wertz (University of Rostock, Rostock, Germany), reviews current research in the field of room-temperature ionic liquids. This topic had a special place at the conference - the round-table discussion about theory and application of these systems, sponsored by Merck KGaA Darmstadt and chaired by Prof. A. Heintz. In the present paper, several selected examples of the most promising chemical and technical applications of ionic liquids are presented, underlining the importance of thermophysical properties of ionic liquids and their role in catalytic and separation processes.Solvation steric effect plays a decisive role in reaction thermodynamics and kinetics of the metal ions. This topic is analyzed by Shin-Ichi Ishiguro and his coworkers from Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan in a study entitled "Solvent conformation and ion solvation: From molecular to ionic liquids". The authors discuss their recent results on solvation steric effects in view of structure and thermodynamics, particularly, the conformational change of solvents and their effect on the metal-ion complexation.Electrolyte solutions play major roles in nature and in technological processes, yet the understanding of their properties and interaction with other materials is far from being complete. On the contrary, the ion specific effects, experimentally determined more than 100 years ago, are still largely unexplained. Toward this end, the paper "Specific ion effects in liquids, in biological systems, and at interfaces" by Werner Kunz (University of Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany) reviews the present knowledge of ion effects in solutions, at interfaces, and in complex colloidal systems. Camera trapping in wildlife management and research is a growing global phenomenon. The technology is advancing very quickly, providing unique opportunities for collecting new biological knowledge. In order for fellow camera trap researchers and managers to share their knowledge and experience, the First International Camera Trapping Colloquium in Wildlife Management and Research was held in Sydney, Australia. Camera Trapping brings together papers from a selection of the presentations at the colloquium and provides a benchmark of the international developments and uses of camera traps for monitoring wildlife for research and management. Four major themes are presented: case studies demonstrating camera trapping for monitoring; the constraints and pitfalls of camera technologies; design standards and protocols for camera trapping surveys; and the identification, management and analyses of the myriad images that derive from camera trapping studies. The final chapter provides future directions for research using camera traps. Remarkable photographs are included, showing interesting, enlightening and entertaining images of animals 'doing their thing', making it an ideal reference for wildlife managers, conservation organisations, students and academics, pest animal researchers, private and public land managers, wildlife photographers and recreational hunters.

Abstract It is easy for even the most incompetent lawyer to give an account of an area of law which makes it seem difficult and abstruse. The trick is to explain the law so that it seems simple and may be readily understood. Where the subject is cross-border security and insolvency this is a particularly hard trick to pull off. This collection originated at a colloquium held at St John’s College Oxford in April 2000. A case study, set out in Appendix 1, was used as the basis of discussion and as a direction pointer for the various papers, which are set out in this collection in a revised form. This book is divided into five parts, as was the colloquium itself. The first part takes the form of a plea for help from a banker. The second part is an attempt to provide an overview of the ways in which security may be taken in England, the United States, France, and Germany. The third section considers the choice of law rules in relation to security in those countries. In the fourth, Professor Goode discusses the attempts through international conventions to solve the problems raised by the inadequacies of and the conflicts between current choice of law rules. Finally, the international impact of insolvency upon cross-border security is considered.
