Abstract:
Maria Nuova.
The artistic activity of Giovan Paolo Lomazzo has been very little studied. Scholars have given their preference to his written work, published as a world famous poet (in Italian and in Lombard Dialect; the Grotteschi and the Rabisch, both published in 1587) and as art theorist (above all the Trattato dell'Arte della Pittura, 1584 and the Idea del Tempio della Pittura, 1590). Lomazzo was also a very important painter, one of the most Famous in Milan between 1560 and 1571, when he was compelled to stop his activity for a sudden eyes illness, which made him almost totally blind. He executed many portraits, which are almost totally lost (except from his two autoportraits, now in Brera and at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Wien), and many religious paintings for important churches of Milan, such as two Crucifixions for S. Giovanni in Conca (now in Valmadrera, Parish Church and at Brera Gallery), the altarpiece in San Barnaba and the Pietà for San Vittore all'Olmo (now at the Hospital Church in Inzago). He worked also in Piacenza, Lodi and Caronno, near Varese.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis work focuses on the “Scapigliatura democratica”, an Italian literary movement that developed in Milan between the 60s and 80s of the 19th century. Compared to the broader Scapigliatura movement, the Scapigliatura democratica is characterized by the close link between literature and politics that underlies its cultural project. My research aimed to investigate this phenomenon of politicization in the narrative and journalistic production of the most significant representatives of the movement (Arrighi, Bizzoni, Tronconi, Valera, Cameroni). After an introductory chapter on the state of the art, the thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first, we sought to describe the relationship between “Scapigliatura” and politics, from the late 1850s, when the term “Scapigliatura” first appeared in Cletto Arrighi’s fragment La scapigliatura, to the journal called «La Farfalla» by Angelo Sommaruga, one of the last newspapers linked to the movement; and also passing through the crucial experience of «Gazzettino Rosa» (1867-1873) by Achille Bizzoni and Felice Cavallotti. In order to avoid any terminological confusion with previous critical studies, we favoured the use of the word “Scapigliatura” from within the movement, in particular the articles written in the first person that were often published in the “scapigliati” journals of the time. In this sense, one of the main tasks of our work has been to evaluate, according to the author or journal concerned, the evolution and the different degree of politicization of the term.In the second part, our goal has been to show the contiguity between literary production and the journalistic activity of the movement, both formally and in terms of content. The hypothesis we wanted to verify was, in particular, the presence of some features related to the pamphlet genre (Angenot, La parole pamphlétaire, 1982) in all this production. It follows that the distinctive feature of the “Scapigliatura democratica” lies less in its artistic or literary configuration than in its rhetorical disposition. In this respect, we shown that even the literary trend of realism, which is the majority within the movement, is characterized in its concrete application by the strong influence of extraliterary ethical and ideological categories. In the last chapter of this section, we tested this idea of hybrid literature by analyzing some of the battles, both cultural and political, waged by the movement throughout its activity, such as those concerning militarism, bourgeois morality or the social question. In conclusion, we underlined the importance of political reflection in building the identity of the movement, as well as the innovative role of intellectual-agitator that the “scapigliati” writer-journalists had in Italy’s political and cultural crisis in the first years after Unity. This was done in particular by the proposal of a combat literature, which would show all its power and its capacity to have an impact on society from the end of the 19th century onwards

Abstract:
The dissertation approaches the architecture projects developed by Carlos Barjas Millan (1927/1964) from 1951 to 1964, during approximately 15 years of professional work, as well as his personal and academic formation. The study object is the set of this architectural production analyzed from its insertion in the cultural and political moment, since the second Getúlio Vargas government and the country’s democratization until the 1964 Military Coup. This study provides an instrument for a systematic reflection about the architect Carlos Millan’s work and about the Brazilian Modern Architecture, once the literature concerning his career and architectonic production is scarce and little specific. The study concerning Millan’s professional development and his projects from the drawing archives holdings of the FAUUSP library aims at a better understanding of the architect’s career, who worked with architecture, urban planning, furniture design, as a professor of FAUM and FAUUSP, and passed along two polarized groups of modern architecture in São Paulo, in the 50’s and 60’s, represented by Miguel Forte and Vilanova Artigas. Carlos Millan’s work was not very numerous, relatively restrict to São Paulo city, being the great majority of residences, which does not reduce the importance of his production. Through the rescue of the architect’s career, the study of the professional biography and of the projects of this research, the incorporation of this instrument as an organized database characterizes an important stage for future studies about the Modern Architecture of São Paulo and Brazil. This study aims at a better comprehension of the Brazilian architecture development considering that hypothesis that have already been identified by the historiography are reflected in the projects studied here: the concern of a group of Brazilian architects about the technologic development, searching for formal solutions, for techniques and esthetics with cultural roots inserted in a project of modernization of the country. The dissertation gathers in a single research information about projects developed by Millan during his professional activity by a compilation of drawings and pictures of the most significant work of his career, allowing a better access to the projects by means of a research instrument with detailed and organized data, and with analyses relating the projects among themselves and with the historical moment of their production.

Abstract:
By adopting a long-term period chronological perspective, this research analyses the institutional frameworks’ development of Milanese literary academies between their appearance in the city area and the beginning of Austrian government’s jurisdiction after the Peace of Utrecht. Key objectives of the phenomenon’s historical reconstruction are: the identification of patrons who promoted the academies’ dissemination; the description of associational networks made up by different intellectual elite groups operating in Milan; the contextualization of cultural projects - and resulting under covered political tensions - that influenced the academical pattern’s expansion process; finally, the gradual constitution of a peculiar Ambrosian identity related with this associations’ typology. The exegesis of the “Badia della Val di Blenio” academy’s literary production, deduced by the historical examine of the “Facchino” Cosme de Aldana’s bio-bibliographical experience, introduces the enquiry on students’ academical foundations, which were the result of the cooperation between the archiepiscopal curia, religious orders involved in the educational programs and representative bodies of Milanese patricians. Archival discoveries on Inquieti’s meetings contribute in depicting the progressive composition of a coherent Ambrosian “system of virtues” (the baroque reference point for academical activities), that got into a substantial crisis at the end of seventeenth century.

Abstract:
The prospect of the continuous multiplication of life styles, the obsolescence of the traditional typological diagrams, the usability of spaces on different territorial scales, imposes on contemporary architecture the search for new models of living. Limited densities in urban development have produced the erosion of territory, the increase of the harmful emissions and energy consumption. High density housing cannot refuse the social emergency to ensure high quality and low cost dwellings, to a new people target: students, temporary workers, key workers, foreign, young couples without children, large families and, in general, people who carry out public services. Social housing strategies have become particularly relevant in regenerating high density urban outskirts. The choice of this research topic derives from the desire to deal with the recent accommodation emergency, according to different perspectives, with a view to give a contribution to the current literature, by proposing some tools for a correct design of the social housing, by ensuring good quality, cost-effective, and eco-sustainable solutions, from the concept phase, through management and maintenance, until the end of the building life cycle. The purpose of the thesis is defining a framework of guidelines that become effective instruments to be used in designing the social housing. They should also integrate the existing regulations and are mainly thought for those who work in this sector. They would aim at supporting students who have to cope with this particular residential theme, and also the users themselves. The scientific evidence of either the recent specialized literature or the solutions adopted in some case studies within the selected metropolitan areas of Milan, London and São Paulo, it is possible to identify the principles of this new design approach, in which the connection between typology, morphology and technology pursues the goal of a high living standard.

Boito, Andrea <1982&gt. "Social housing: interventions of densification in urban regeneration (1995-2010). Critical analysis of strategies adopted in Milan, London, São Paulo." Doctoral thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amsdottorato.unibo.it/6132/.

Abstract:
The Specchio interiore (Interior Mirror) is a work by the dominican Fra' Battista da Crema partly dedicated to the theme of mystical union. Written close to the foundation, in 1522, of the Hospital of the Incurables in Venice, it remained unpublished for almost two decades and it was first published in 1540 thanks to Ludovica Torelli, countess of Guastalla (1499-1569), alias Paola Maria. Widow, for the second time at age twenty-eight, Ludovica Torelli enjoyed an unusually powerful position for a women. Forced to sell her small state to Ferrante Gonzaga, she spent the second part of her life founding religious institutions and hospitals in Milan and other cities in northern Italy.

Abstract:
This chapter first turns to the problem of writing histories, beginning with a major figure in the Catholic culture of France, Jacques Auguste de Thou, whose way of writing history brought him into conflict with his own church in terms that presaged future events such as the story of Paolo Sarpi or the ordeal of Galileo. It then turns to the poet and polemicist John Milton, a controversial figure who was closely identified with the English parliamentary struggles and civil war. The chapter reviews his works, particularly his Areopagitica: A Speech of Mr. John Milton for the Liberty of Unlicens'd Printing (1644), a pamphlet written in favor of the freedom of the press. It draws attention to one of the major themes of his Areaopagitica: his treatment throughout the work of the problem of schisms and sects.

Abstract:
The modern Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico was born in the port city of Volos in the Grecian province of Thessaly. After training in Athens and Munich, he lived briefly in Milan and Florence before moving to Paris in 1911. There, between 1911 and 1915, he developed the highly original, ‘metaphysical’ style of painting on which his reputation is chiefly founded. With this singular idiom––epitomised in his 1914 painting The Enigma of a Day––and the critical support of Guillaume Apollinaire, he established himself as one of the luminaries of the Parisian avant-garde, alongside Pablo Picasso and André Derain.

Abstract:
This essay outlines the history and development of Spanish-American Literature as a subject of university teaching at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. It has a fairly recent history which began when Franco Meregalli, after a long tour in Southern America, sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for some lectures in several universities, started a course on Spanish-American literature. During his first period as a university teacher, Meregalli had met Giuseppe Bellini in Milan. So in 1969 he called his former student Bellini, who was by then an expert on Spanish-American authors, to teach Spanish-American Literature in Venice. Bellini stayed in Venice for 16 years and left Ca’ Foscari to go back to his home university (Milan) in 1985. Between 1969 and 1984, many important Spanish-American writers, such as Miguel Angel Asturias, Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges and several others, came to Venice to lecture on their own works. After Bellini, the Uruguyan poetess Martha Canfield and, later on, Susanna Regazzoni, a former student of Bellini’s, took over the courses of Spanish-American literature, thus keeping alive, with the help of Margherita Cannavacciuolo, the Venetian tradition of Spanish-American Studies.

Milovanovic-Bertram, Smilja. "Lina Bo Bardi: Evolution of Cultural Displacement." In 2016 ACSA International Conference. ACSA Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.35483/acsa.intl.2016.61.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years much has been written and exhibited regarding Lina Bo Bardi, the Italian/Brazilian architect (1914-1992). This paper aims to look at the phenomenon of cultural displacement and the dissemination of her design thinking as a major female figure in a male dominated profession. This investigation is distinguished from others in that it addresses the importance of regional and cultural influences that formed Lina’s design philosophy in her early years in Italy. Cultural displacement has long played a significant role in the creative process for artists. Often major innovators in literature are immigrants as elements of strangeness, distance, and alienation all contribute to their creativity. The premise is that critical distance is paramount for reflection as a change of context unfolds unforeseen possibilities. Displacement was a consistent element throughout the trajectory of Lina’s architectural career as she moved from Rome to Milan, from Milan to Sao Paolo from Sao Paolo to Bahia and back to Sao Paolo. Viewing this form of detachment and dislocation permits insight into her career and body of work as displacement mediates the paradoxical relationship between time and space. The paper will examine three distinct periods in her career. The first period is set in Rome, where she assimilated the city, showed artistic aptitude and spent her university years studying under Piacentiniand Giovannoni. The second period is set in Milan, where she developed impressive editorial and layout skills in publications work with Gio Ponti and BrunoZevi. and was influenced by Antonio Gramsci’s writings. The third is set in Brazil, where she builds and evolves as an architect via what she absorbed in Rome, wrote in Milan, and finally realized in Brazil. After Italy’s collapse in WWII Lina writes, draws, edits, critiques the plight of the Italians in need of better housing and circumstances. She leaves Milan with her new husband, PM Bardi (a prominent journalist, art critic) for Brazil. In Sao Paolo she absorbs the optimism and positive direction of Brazil. Her early design work in Brazil echoes European modernism, but when she travels to Bahia and becomes aware of the social conditions, she draws from her Italian experiences of and ideas of transforming lives through craft. Her architectural projects become directly responsive to the culture of Bahia and the politics of poverty. Lina’s design thinking evolves and parallels George Kubler’s study, The Shape of Time, and the history of man-made objects by bridging the divide between art and material culture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Métodos: Estudo descritivo do tipo retrospectivo.
