Abstract:

Amid the great Protestant martyrologies of the mid-sixteenth century, Heinrich Pantaleon's Martyrvm historia (1563) has been comparatively overlooked. This article argues that Pantaleon's martyrology acted as a capstone to the narrative framework of Protestant suffering and resistance. Pantaleon's command of vernacular languages gave him access to a wider range of material than other martyrologists, material which his Latin text made accessible to learned readers across Europe. This article also examines the collaboration between Pantaleon and John Foxe, which directly inspired Pantaleon's martyrology and enabled Foxe to give a cohesive, trans-European account of Protestant martyrs in his Acts and monuments.

Abstract:

A new antlion (Neuroptera Myrmeleontidae Myrmeleontini), Myrmeleon almohadarum sp. nov., is described from southern Spain and Tunisia. The new taxon is closely related to the mostly sympatric M. inconspicuus Rambur and M. mariaemathildae Pantaleoni, Cesaroni & Nicoli Aldini but differing in body pattern, wing venation and larval chaetotaxy. The validity of the new species is also supported by a phylogenetic analysis based on COI sequences. The larva of this new species is described and compared with congeners. M. almohadarum appears to be associated with sandy environments.

Almost a half century ago, Tjeder (1972) stated that the genus Ascalaphus had been interpreted in a sense other than that defined by its type species (see Pantaleoni and Loru 2018). So, the generic name Ascalaphus Fabricius, 1775, became the senior synonym of Helicomitus McLachlan, 1871, and the genus Libelloides, Schäffer, 1763, was reserved for the Palearctic diurnal coloured owlflies, which until then were considered to belong to the genus Ascalaphus. Even though Tjeder’s proposition produced a dramatic change in a long-term “prevailing usage”, it was immediately and universally accepted as necessary. However, surprisingly, this change was never followed by the consequent necessary nomenclatural changes at the family-group name level.

The paper deals with the historical reconstruction of the relation between the Austrian economist Emil Sax and the Italian economists of his generation. It is focused on three episodes. The first concerns the introduction of marginal analysis in public finance, seeing the works of Maffeo Pantaleoni (1883) and Sax (1887) as of primary significance. The second is about the reception accorded to the 1887 Sax's work in Italy by Giuseppe Ricca-Salerno (1887), and by Augusto Graziani (1887). The third relates to the development of a pure theory of public finance, and concerns the works of Sax (1887) and Antonio De Viti De Marco (1888). This analysis indicates that school rivalries were responsible for the different reactions of Italian economists to Sax's work.

In the second half of 19th century, newborn Italy was invaded by innovative ideas supported by democratic, liberal, and socialist intellectuals who wanted to renew social life, economy, and moral values by spreading their ideas both in politics and in everyday life. Right-wing reaction used the same methods of communication and persuasion: the publication of journals and books and their promotion in reading cabinets and public libraries. Maria and Antonia Ponti, two upper-middle-class sisters who married into aristocracy, used their influence and resources to advance the status of women in society. They founded associations and libraries (in Ravenna, Imola, and Bergamo) with the theoretical support of a network of Italian intellectuals, including Cor-rado Ricci, Vilfredo Pareto, and Maffeo Pantaleoni. The philanthropic actions of the sisters, who combined their Catholic and conservative point of view with the improvement of the condition of women, have handed down a remarkable legacy in the form of books and a collection of laces.

SummaryEnd-user training is an essential element of electronic medical record (EMR) implementation and frequently suffers from minimal institutional investment. In addition, discussion of successful EMR training programs for physicians is limited in the literature. The authors describe a successful physician-training program at Stanford Children’s Health as part of a large scale EMR implementation. Evaluations of classroom training, obtained at the conclusion of each class, revealed high physician satisfaction with the program. Free-text comments from learners focused on duration and timing of training, the learning environment, quality of the instructors, and specificity of training to their role or department. Based upon participant feedback and institutional experience, best practice recommendations, including physician engagement, curricular design, and assessment of proficiency and recognition, are suggested for future provider EMR training programs. The paper discusses the influence of Pareto’s methodological revolution on the Italian scientific tradition in public finance. To that end, the works of the most celebrated scholars from within the first, second, and final generations of this tradition are reviewed with reference to their reactions to Pareto’s idea of science as logico-experimental activities, and his contributions to the development of marginalism and theoretical sociology. The particular scholars considered across the three generations’ time span include Pantaleoni, De Viti, Barone, Einaudi, Sensini, Griziotti, Borgatta, Murray, and Fasiani. The main original contribution of this paper is the marshaling of evidence in support of the author’s proposition that Fasiani’s research program is characterized by a clearly Paretian mode of enquiry with regard to methodology and the economic investigation of fiscal activities, although the specific influence of Pareto’s sociology on Fasiani’s approach to fiscal studies was relatively modest. It is provisionally concluded that, in taking the best and most relevant of Pareto’s work for fiscal studies, Fasiani’s contributions came to represent the highest point in the evolution of the general theory of public finance in the Italian tradition.

The paper attempts to trace the character and work of Francesco Saverio Nitti by reflecting on the economic and social contents of the review he founded: "La riforma sociale". The historical period is the end of the 19th century, by which the "Giornale degli Economisti" of Antonio de Viti de Marco, Ugo Mazzola and Maffeo Pantaleoni had already established as the principal Italian journal of political economy. "La riforma sociale" was born in the February of 1894 under the initiative of Francesco Saverio Nitti with the aim of containing the dominant liberal thought and reviving a way of making research in the field of economics that may be ascribed to the German Historicism. The paper focuses on the roots of the ideals of Nitti's review and on the meaning of the disagreement with the "Giornale degli Economisti", on the ground of method, ideology and economic policy. Background: Hysteroscopy is the process of viewing and operating in the endometrial cavity from a transcervical approach. A camera is commonly attached to the proximal end of the hysteroscope to broadcast the image onto a large video screen. The development of hysteroscopy is rooted in the work of Pantaleoni, who first reported uterine endoscopy in 1869. However, at that time, instrumentation was elementary, and expansion of the uterine cavity was insufficient. In 1925, Rubin first used CO2 to distend the uterus. The use of liquid distention media became routine by the 1980s, and many new hysteroscopic procedures, including endometrial ablation, were developed.Methods: This was a retrospective study which presents the results of hysteroscopic treatment of various gynecological diseases in Cantonal hospital Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period from 2011 to 2019. Total 175 cases were enrolled. All underwent hysteroscopic surgery in general anesthesia. The results were statistically analyzed.Results: Total number of patients is 175. The incidence is highest in the age 31-50 years (62%). Endometrial polyp is the most common pathological condition in 80%, myoma submucosum in 5,7%, and septum uteri 2,8%. The most common treatment was polypectomy 80%, then resection of submucosal myoma 5,7%, and extraction of IUD 4%.Conclusions: Hysteroscopy involves a minimal damage to body tissues. It is safer than open surgery. Hysteroscopic treatment has contributed to faster treatment, faster recovery and reducing the cost of treatment, and thus raise the level of efficiency.

Secondo un noto racconto di Michele Pantaleone, la mafia aiutò militarmente gli Alleati ad invadere l’isola. La prima versione di questa tesi fu pubblicata dal giornalista sul quotidiano L’Ora di Palermo nel 1958. Nel 1963 lo stesso giornale pubblicò, a cura di Felice Chilanti, le memorie del boss Nick Gentile, che proponevano un’interpretazione opposta a quella di Pantaleone, accusata di falsificare la storia. Il contrasto di giudizi inaugurava una disputa che perdura ancora oggi. Il contributo fornisce gli elementi per una ricostruzione storica del dibattito e delle sue origini.

Pantaleonius toschiorum Tauber, n. gen., n.sp., is described from several islands in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles of the West Indies. For comparison, Abachrysa eureka Banks from southeastern United States is redescribed, and data on the three remaining New World belonopterygine genera, Vieira Navás, Nacarina Navás, and Belonopteryx Gerstaecker, are summarized. A key for identifying the New World belonopteryine genera is included. Although recognizably distinct, Pantaleonius shares several features with Vieira, which is considered basal within Belonopterygini. Both genera are quite different from Abachrysa Banks, which is known to be derived among the New World belonopterygines and also closely related to the Old World belonopterygine clade.

El Vejamen de la luna de Anastasio Pantaleón de Ribera es un ejemplo notable de la producción de las academias literarias del Siglo de Oro, tanto como un testimonio de la prosa jocosa de la época y del subgénero del vejamen literario. El texto del Vejamen de la luna nos ha llegado a través de dos versiones: la del manuscrito Cuaderno de versos (con 1626 como año ante quem) y la de las Obras impresas (1631-1634) que editó Josef de Pellicer. Durante el siglo XX se solía publicar la versión impresa del vejamen, hasta que Kenneth Brown (1980) publicó el Cuaderno de versos. Desde entonces se suele trabajar con la versión manuscrita del vejamen, por considerarla más cercana a la voluntad del autor. Este trabajo se propone analizar las variantes de ambas versiones para evaluar el valor de la versión impresa, que es al fin y al cabo la que cimentó el prestigio de Pantaleón durante el XVII y en siglos posteriores.

Abstract:

This paper is devoted to the Polish translation of John Foxe’s famous Rerum in Ecclesia gestarum on Christian martyrs, authored by a Calvinist writer, printer and composer Cyprian Bazylik. His monumental Historyja o srogim prześladowaniu Kościoła Bożego (1567) was compiled from the works of John Foxe, Jean Crespin and Heinrich Pantaleon, supplemented with Jan van Utenhove’s account of the thrilling odyssey of the members of the London’s Foreign Church led by Jan Łaski. The author aimed at creation of a complete account of the persecuted Church throughout Europe, starting from John Wycliff to 1563. Historyja is the most significant witness of the impact of Foxe’s theological thought and ideas on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Abstract:

The history of the study and the results of architectural and archaeological research of the Church of St. Pantaleon of the XII century, preserved near Halych on the Dniester River, are considered. During excavations in the inner part of the monument, the crypts with burials of the XVI–XVIII centuries were examined, areas of the foundations of the ancient temple were recorded and other important artifacts were found. A series of 26 survey trenches were excavated at the outer perimeter of the object. Regular foundation projections for supporting the pilasters of the ground walls, as well as two projections at the base of the side wings of the main perspective portal are localized and recorded there. The discrepancy in the planning of the underground and aboveground parts of the building was stated. A unique feature in the composition of the altar part of the church was noticed among the monuments of medieval Romanesque architecture. Based on the analysis of planning, construction-technological, stratigraphic features of the object, well-argued hypotheses of dating, sequence of construction, and use of the measurement module in the construction of the architectural form of the monument are presented. It is noted that the temple was built in a poorly developed area. After the leveling of the area, the strip foundations of the external walls were established on it initially, and before the foundations of the internal sub-cupola columns were built, the plan of the future ground structure was corrected due to the change of the customer of the construction. It is assumed that the strip foundations of the building were established during the first short reign of Roman Msyislavovych in Halych in 1188, and construction was completed before 1193 during the reign of Volodymyr Yaroslavovych. It is established that a measuring foot of 30 cm long was used when planning the ground part of the temple. The importance of the Romanesque monument of European significance is emphasized in the conclusions. The instruction of its protection, preservation, and further comprehensive study is expressed, with the use of fundamental methods of architectural archaeology. Alors que les sociétés d’aujourd’hui sont exposées à une concurrence forte, par l’importance mise sur l’innovation technologique et humaine dans tous les secteurs économiques, la créativité, une compétence clé du XXIe siècle, est recherchée par les employeurs (De Backer et al., 2012; Lubart et al., 2015; Mnisri et Nagati, 2012; Pantaleo, 2019; Romero, Lille et Patiño, 2017; Upitis, 2014). Les documents institutionnels reconnaissent sa valeur transversale dans le développement de l’élève (MEQ, 2006). Malgré cela, en éducation, définir, enseigner et évaluer cette compétence peut devenir complexe pour les enseignants (Alter et al., 2009; De Backer et al., 2012; Pantaleo, 2019), comme c’est le cas dans le domaine des arts où l’objet créé prend une place déterminante, voire totale, dans l’évaluation des capacités de l’élève, ce dernier n’étant pas toujours le témoin d’un apprentissage (Boyd et Cutcher, 2015; Geist et Hohn, 2009; Rosenfeld, 2014). Il est proposé de porter une attention particulière au processus créatif et à son apport sur les compétences transversales, pour décrire la créativité comme une élaboration de sens en éducation. Cette perspective socioculturelle permet de considérer le processus d’apprentissage de l’élève lorsqu’il crée, plutôt que de tenir uniquement compte de son résultat. L’article se divise en quatre parties : une définition historique de la créativité dans la recherche, une description du concept dans le domaine de l’éducation québécoise, une réflexion conceptuelle sur le processus créatif, puis la définition de la créativité comme processus d’élaboration de sens, pour l’exprimer comme une activité fondamentalement socioculturelle.

En este artículo analizaremos uno de los ejes de la creación novelística de Mario Vargas Llosa (la exploración del amor y el sexo) a través de las traducciones inglesas de las novelas Pantaleón y las visitadoras (1973), La tía Julia y el escribidor (1977), Elogio de la madrastra (1988) y Los cuadernos de don Rigoberto (1997). Si bien en casi todas las obras de Vargas Llosa el amor juega un papel relevante, en estas cuatro obras hay una fabulación explícita sobre la sexualidad humana y un notable trabajo sobre la elaboración lingüística y retórica del lenguaje del amor y el sexo. Traducir el lenguaje relativo al sexo es, sin duda, un área muy sensible, el lugar de confluencia entre las interdicciones sociales y los límites éticos de cada traductor.

Abstract:

- The essay deals with the Italian economists' debate on wages at the time of the advent of trade unions. This new fact altered the wage level and prompted Italian economists' to reconsider the principles and circumstances shaping wages. It is argued that abstract economic theory such as Pareto's and Pantaleoni's exerted little influence over the ongoing public debate. Yet economists of less abstract leanings that is, inspired by Marshall or Schmöller rather than Walras played a crucial role by disseminating among the public the ideas and experiences current in more developed countries and in Britain in particular. As usual in second comer countries, economists came to embody ‘modernity', although the relatively backward social and political situation of Italy made imitation impossible in practice (e.g. paying the high wages recommended by Brassey, Brentano, and others). Abstract:

Acute mesenteric ischemia is a rare disorder; it occurs in an average of 0.4% of acute surgery cases. Its diagnosis is often difficult because of the poor symptoms, and mortality of the patients is still as high as 70–90%. Aims: The aims of the study were to assess the importance of time factor that may influence the outcome of the disease and to find out whether it is possible to decrease the high mortality of patients. Method: Among patients admitted to Szent Pantaleon Hospital in Hungary between January 2001 and December 2010, patients whose surgery or autopsy findings confirmed intestinal necrosis were analyzed. A total of 114 patients with acute mesenteric ischemia were included in the study. Results: 55% of the patients had typical symptoms. 43.8% of the patients underwent surgery and among these patients the mortality rate was 70% despite surgical intervention. The survival rate was 72.3% when surgery was performed within less than 12 hours after the onset of symptoms, but only 20% of patients survived when surgery was delayed between 24 and 48 hours after the onset of symptoms. Conclusion: With early diagnosis and intervention, patients with acute mesenteric ischemia may have a better a chance to survive. Orv. Hetil., 2012, 153, 1424–1432.

Abstract:

El presente estudio examina dos complejos pasajes de las Rimas de Tomé de Burguillos, ejemplos respectivos, pero elusivos, de polémica y burla, o más bien de burla con polémica y sin ella. En el primero, incluido en La Gatomaquia, estudiamos el sentido de una maliciosa referencia al poeta Anastasio Pantaleón de Ribera, ya difunto en 1634. En el segundo, el soneto 127 (129 en la edición de Carreño), mostramos el blanco satírico de otra referencia sarcástica, alusión que le confiere al poema un tono burlesco acorde con el de muchos otros sonetos de la colección. Para llevar a cabo nuestro estudio nos ceñimos a una metodología de comentario de texto. Tras examinar las lecturas de la crítica, y en especial las de los editores de los versos en cuestión, presentamos la nuestra, que ilustra el conceptismo de los pasajes poniéndolos en contraste con diversos lugares de obras de Lope y de otros escritores del momento.
