Skipper, Cathy, and Florian Birkmayer. The Role of Aromatherapy in the Treatment of Substance Use and Co-Occurring Disorders. Edited by Shahla J. Modir and George E. Muñoz. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190275334.003.0024.

Full text
Abstract:
Aromatherapy can be an important tool in the treatment of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. When used by trained specialists, essential oils are safe, simple, and effective both in alleviating symptoms as well as helping increase self-awareness and transform consciousness. Olfaction is a powerful sensory modality, and olfactory receptors have been found in nearly every tissue of the body and parts of the Central Nervous System (CNS) relevant to addiction and motivation. Essential oils are widely used to support and alleviate nervous symptom disorders such as those triggered by addiction (i.e., anxiety, sleep problems, panic attacks, depression, stress etc.). The available scientific literature supports the traditional uses of the most common essential oils in this domain and is encouraging for the continued development of these powerful plants extracts for addiction support.

Klein, Jennifer L. The media response to sex crimes. Edited by Teela Sanders. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190213633.013.26.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay focuses on the media’s response to sex crimes, how news reporting can affect people’s perceptions of sex offenders, and how all of these issues are connected to the development of law. The rate of sex crimes has been steadily declining for the past 20 years, and official rates of recidivism for sex offenders are actually low compared to other types of offenders, but the media tend to ignore these facts. Many people become oversaturated by the news, and continuous reporting can cause panic in viewers. The type of information that the media report increases people’s concern that they, or a close family member, might become a victim of a sex offense. With the fear increased—making the topic relevant in our culture—media outlets then spend more time reporting on such issues because people are interested and the stories will sell.

Woods, Jordan Blair. LGBTQ in the Courtroom. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190658113.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reviews a limited but emerging body of research on biases that arise and affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) jurors as well as juror decision-making when LGBTQ individuals are involved in criminal cases. The chapter also discusses recent research and legal developments surrounding jury selection and LGBTQ identity and describes debates over best practices to identify and combat anti-LGBTQ juror biases. Finally, the chapter reviews gay and trans “panic” defenses in cases involving the murders of LGBTQ individuals and examines other challenges that LGBTQ defendants and victims face in different criminal contexts. Although there is a need for future studies, the available research illustrates how challenges linked to sexuality and gender identity in the criminal jury system can compromise legitimacy and fairness in the criminal justice system more broadly.

Belsher, Bradley E., Daniel P. Evatt, Michael C. Freed, and Charles C. Engel. Internet and Computer-Based Treatments for the Management of PTSD. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190205959.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
A rapid expansion in the development of telehealth treatments has occurred during the past several decades, with a growing body of evidence supporting online therapies for behavioral health disorders. These online interventions have focused primarily on the treatment of depression, panic disorder, social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder. More recently, and with the relative success of the previous Web-based treatments, several online treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have emerged. An overview of Internet and computer-based treatments (ICTs) for PTSD is presented, including a general discussion of computerized treatments followed by a review of specific ICTs that have been developed and tested for PTSD. Some of the critical issues surrounding ICTs are then explored, and an example of how online treatments can be incorporated into a larger care model is presented. The discussion ends with a brief description of the use of mobile health applications to augment treatment.

Foltz, Jonathan. Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190676490.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book seeks to understand how the need to respond to film has become a constituent feature in the ongoing development of the novel. It suggests that such fascination with film played out against the backdrop of a growing discourse about the novel's respectability. As the modern novel was increasingly venerated as a genre of aesthetic refinement and moral purpose, authors frequently turned their attention to film: a medium enviable not for the successes it achieved but for the lapses of taste it made obtrusive, and for the contradictions of address that it had the power to make attractive. In this impacted logic (and panic) of media transition, novelists came to credit narrative practices as yet undefined and unassimilated within literary tradition. In this, their texts respond to the felt devaluation of art in a transforming public culture which could seem at moments to be leaving the novel behind.

Hasinoff, Amy Adele. The criminalization consensus and the right to sext. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038983.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the consensus that teenagers should have no right to sext and argues for the decriminalization of consensual teen sexting. It begins with a discussion of two cases at the beginning of the moral panic about sexting in 2009: in the first, the American Civil Liberties Union supported three girls who were threatened with child pornography charges by an overzealous prosecutor; the second case is the development of Vermont's sexting legislation in 2009. The chapter then considers the main problems with the criminalization of consensual sexting: the uneven application of the law, punitive and unfair education programs, and the silencing of victims whose privacy has been violated. It also outlines arguments in favor of allowing teens to sext, contending that this could, among other things, confirm their right to freedom of expression. The chapter concludes by contending that it may be more practical to think about regulating consensual sexting as a sex act (rather than a speech act).

Renfro, Paul M. Stranger Danger. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190913984.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Starting in the late 1970s, a moral panic concerning child kidnapping and exploitation gripped the United States. For many Americans, a series of high-profile cases of missing and murdered children, publicized through an emergent twenty-four-hour news cycle, signaled a “national epidemic” of child abductions perpetrated by strangers. Some observers insisted that fifty thousand or more children fell victim to stranger kidnappings in any given year. (The actual figure was and remains about one hundred.) Stranger Danger demonstrates how racialized and sexualized fears of stranger abduction—stoked by the news media, politicians from across the partisan divide, bereaved parents, and the business sector—helped to underwrite broader transformations in US political culture and political economy. Specifically, the child kidnapping scare further legitimated a bipartisan investment in “family values” and “law and order,” thereby enabling the development and expansion of sex offender registries, AMBER Alerts, and other mechanisms designed to safeguard young Americans and their families from “stranger danger”—and to punish the strangers who supposedly threatened them.
