Hansell, Fredrik, and Axel Vällfors. "Demand Side Management : how has residential electricity demand changed during the corona pandemic?" Thesis, KTH, Energiteknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-298849.

Full text
Abstract:
Restrictive social distancing measures imposed by governments across the world to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have led to immediate changes in general behaviour and habits, which has had major effects on electricity systems. The pandemic has highlighted the great importance of reliable electricity supply in society as many people were forced to start working from home and thus became entirely reliant on digital modes of communication and information sharing. However, the resilience of energy systems could become weakened in the future as the share of intermittent renewable energy sources keeps increasing. If working from home were to become the norm in the future, knowing how households’ electricity load curves are affected by such a change could be valuable and help increase capabilities of demand side flexibility in the household sector. In this project, appliance-level electricity demand data gathered from Swedish households is used to create a simple bottom-up model. The purpose of the model is to be able to evaluate how the total electricity demand in a residential area changes after implementing behavioral changes at a household level. Specifically, the model was used to evaluate the effect of certain households in a region switching to working from home. Results were obtained from the model in the form of estimated changes in the electricity demand for different proportions of teleworking households. These changes were then combined with electricity demand data from a residential area in Stockholm to create new load curves that show what electricity demand could look like for the residential area at different shares of households working from home. The final results are presented in the form of estimated changes in electricity demand, peak power and electricity consumption for 30, 60 and 90 percent of households working from home. The results showed that weekdays' average load profile may have changed considerably in 2020 for residential areas similar to the one studied in Stockholm. For all scenarios, the change in electricity demand was most noticeable in the middle of the day, when the peak power increased significantly. During the evening, however, neither the electricity demand nor the power peak changed significantly. The peak power during normal working hours increased by 11,6% to 17,1% depending on the season, while total electricity consumption on an average weekday increased by 4,9% to 7,4% compared to pre-pandemic values. Still, the overall weekday power peak typically occurring around dinner time remained nearly unchanged. However, examining the results for different shares of households working from home shows that if almost all were to work from home, the overall peak power could shift from occurring in the evening to the middle of the day. If a new measurement campaign of Swedish households were to be conducted in the future, the ability to predict and prepare for the electricity demand of tomorrow’s homes would improve greatly.

Chaudhry, Chhaya S. "Emerging Diabetes Pandemic in India| A Case Study for an Integrative Approach." Thesis, Walden University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3665809.

Full text
Abstract:

Every day, India sees the addition of 5,000 new cases of diabetes to its current diabetic population of 65 million people. This number is projected to cross the 100 million mark in 15 years. The emerging pandemic scale of diabetes growth is straining India's already-overburdened public healthcare resources. India is home to several well-established native and adapted foreign traditions of medicine that are widely practiced. These traditions include Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homeopathy. The modern and traditional medicine approaches are extensively used as independent systems. The purpose of this qualitative research case study was to evaluate the use of an integrative approach to address the multiple challenges posed by diabetes in India. The research design for the case study was based on the theoretical framework of participatory action research. The research questions evaluated how the modern and traditional medicine systems can be jointly used to contain the spread, scale, and immensity of diabetes in India and examined the barriers and challenges in combining various systems of medicine. Data were collected from interviews with 30 modern and traditional medical practitioners and 6 policy makers identified through a stratified purposeful sampling process. The transcribed data were coded thematically and objectively analyzed. The trustworthiness of interpretations was bolstered with triangulation through records from notes and observations. In evaluating the feasibility of a synergistic and integrative approach, the study filled a gap in scholarly literature. The study contributes to social change by adding to the existing body of knowledge available to physicians and patients in preventing and containing the diabetes pandemic.

Prieto, Diana. "Modeling and Surveillance of Pandemic Influenza Outbreaks." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3297.

Full text
Abstract:
Pandemic outbreaks are unpredictable as to their virus strain, transmissibility, and impact on our quality of life. Hence, the decision support models for mitigation of pandemic outbreaks must be user-friendly and operational, and also incorporate valid estimates of disease transmissibility and severity. This dissertation research is aimed at 1) reviewing the existing pandemic simulation models to identify their implementation gaps with regard to usability and operability, and suggesting research remedies, 2) increasing operability of simulation models by calibrating them via an epidemiological model that estimates infection probabilities using viral shedding profiles of concurrent pandemic and seasonal influenza, and 3) developing a testing strategy for the state laboratories, with their limited capacities, to improve their ability to estimate evolving transmissibility parameters. Our review of literature (Aim 1) indicates the need to continue model enhancements in critical areas including updating of epidemiological data during a pandemic, smooth handling of large demographical databases, incorporation of a broader spectrum of social-behavioral aspects, and improvement of computational efficiency and accessibility. As regards the ease of calibration (Aim 2), we demonstrate that the simulation models, when driven by the infection probabilities obtained from our epidemiological model, accurately reproduce the disease transmissibility parameters. Assuming the availability of sufficient disease reporting infrastructure and strong compliance by both infected population and healthcare providers, our testing strategy (Aim 3) adequately supports characterization of real-time epidemiological parameters. Future research on this topic will be aimed at integrating the laboratory testing strategy with our modeling and simulation approach to develop dynamic mitigation strategies for pandemic outbreaks.

Adamopoulos, Emmanouil, and Wasim Malik. "Crisis Management and Early-Stage Greek Startups : The case of COVID-19 pandemic crisis." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Industriell teknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-446437.

Full text
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic had a worldwide economic effect, and it seems to have produced a challenging economic climate for startups to work in. Thus, the aim of this degree project is to investigate how startups survived the financial and organizational crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and what was the role of their employees during the crisis. The objective is to look at how early-stage startups in Greece are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, whether they can utilize crisis management models, and how the crisis encourages creative destruction. Schumpeterian innovation theory has been merged with crisis management theories to achieve this goal. The thesis employs a qualitative methodology and uses a multiple case study design where cases are the individual startups interviewed. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with a top-management representative of each company.  The results indicate that the startups under discussion are experiencing significant changes. At the beginning of the crisis, they faced a threatening disengagement and demotivation of their employees, which they managed to overcome by focusing on their wellbeing, coaching them, and guiding them through the crisis. The Caplanian model was utilized to analyze their approach. Based on the companies’ core competencies, they are actively pivoting to emerging business models and new markets. These companies are discovering new possibilities and innovating in a number of areas, following both the Schumpeterian evolutionary theories of creative destruction and creative accumulation. Overall, the findings suggest that in responding to the crisis, startups modified and strengthened their strategies. The shift in customer purchasing behavior was a major reason why businesses needed to develop their strategies. The modified consumer behavior was the outcome of actions taken by the Greek government and the Public Health Agency to avoid the spread of the virus such as social distancing, travel bans, and closed borders.

Abstract:
New public Management was implemented as a response to growing welfare andan expensive public sector. 30 years later, the spread of New Public Managementappears to have contributed to an increasingly unhealthy working environment.Social work is now characterized with a big emphasis on continual efficiencyprojects, a growing burden of documentation and a decentralized budgetaryresponsibility due to this. Furthermore, numerous politicians have criticised themodel and many welfare professions become ill in this context. Therefore, socialworkers are using different coping strategies to cope with the organizationalsituations. Today the social work in Sweden is in a new situation due to the globalpandemic that came with the spread of the Coronavirus. This may affect how socialworkers experience and cope with New Public Managements focus on constantefficiency actions because there might be opposition between this andFolkhälsomyndighetens recommendation of curbing the spread of the Coronavirus. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to study social workers experience ofefficiency, budget, documentation and which coping strategies social workers useto cope in a new context characterized by both New Public Management and apandemic. This study addresses the research problem with a qualitative method, more specifically, with help of semi-structured interviews. Eight interviews wereconducted with social workers within Region Skåne and Socialtjänsten. Empiricaldata is analysed with a holistic approach consisting of three theories: Gestaltpsychology, Coping strategies, and Natural Attitude. The results show thatefficiency, budget, and documentation govern to a certain extent, however, theyappear to be less important and meaningful to the individual social worker as beforethe pandemic. The results also show a discrepancy between individual socialworkers and management's views on efficiency, budget, documentation, and whatbecomes important to social work in a pandemic. The result also shows that socialworkers use eight different coping strategies in the practical sphere within thepandemic. Finally, there are three takeaways from the result, pertaining to: anunprepared organisation in relation to the pandemic, a distanced social work, and asluggish bureaucratic readjustment.

Today, stakeholders expect organizations to be able to endure external shocks. Hence, the real potential of an avian flu pandemic has many corporations developing business continuity plans for the disruptions that a pandemic may cause. For the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, the major concerns of a pandemic include high employee absentee rates, lack of accessibility to the medical facilities, and disruption to the product supply chain. This work introduces social amplification of risk theory to evaluate the potential impact of a pandemic to a business due to heightened fear. It uses a case study of Genzyme Corporation and evaluates pandemic related risks to two of its major products. By applying a system dynamics framework to evaluate the mechanisms for the amplification of risks, a solution is proposed. The lessons introduced in this work can help organizations evaluate the true risks of catastrophic events.

Abstract:
In April 2009 a new type of influenza was identified, which was named the A (H1N1). The influenza A (H1N1) resulted in an international crisis and called for specific management actions. In Sweden the largest national mass vaccination in modern times was conducted from autumn 2009 to early 2010. The crisis management posed authorities, county councils and responsible individuals to face a number of challenges, not to mention the current planning and communication. The purpose of this study was to study the experiences and planning for crisis communications during a pandemic based on experiences and perceptions of responsible actors within a county. Seven people who worked in various positions at the county were interviewed. The study has identified three main areas. How the responsible actors described the planning and communication in time of the pandemic, the difficulties and challenges experienced in the crisis communication by the actors and what lessons and implementations made by the responsible actors' experiences. It was revealed that the crisis management went according to the established plan, but it was also pointed out that the plans would only be seen as a guide. When handling the pandemic the County Council faced number of difficulties and challenges and to manage these a flexible approach was required. After the pandemic management the County Council has accumulated lessons and ideas on areas of improvement. Some of these ideas are already implemented in the daily work of the County Council and others are noted in various planning documents. However, there are lessons and experiences that are not documented, in these cases there is a risk that the lessons and experiences might leave the organization as employees are replaced. A conclusion was the importance that all experiences are documented so that important information will be passed on to new employees.

Abstract:
All-hazards pandemic planning is the foundation of current emergency management planning doctrine, yet there is limited information and limited studies related to its effectiveness in mitigating pandemics. The North Texas emergency management community handles incidents of West Nile Virus, H1N1 influenza, and a recent Ebola incident. Despite efforts to mitigate these threats, reported cases and deaths are still occurring from both influenza and West Nile virus. The purpose of this case study was to assess the risk perceptions of emergency planners in a small emergency operation center in North Texas using the cultural theory of risk perception as the theoretical framework. The raw data for this study originated from qualitative semi structured interviews with five emergency managers. By way of qualitative hand coding and thematic extraction, four primary themes emerged from the data: (a) political/organizational climate, (b) emergency response, (c) training and experience, and (d) communication. Additionally, all themes yielded relevant subthemes. The all-hazards approach to pandemic planning was effective as long as planners swiftly adjusted or adapted their plan for individual emergency events. The emergency management community still struggles with ineffective communication, negative political influences, poor coordination, and training shortfalls. Lack of trust in the levels of government emerged as a potential underlying cause to many of the issues. These findings may promote positive social change by assisting emergency management planners in assessing communications, coordination, training, appropriate use of personnel, and to identify areas where lack of trust between community partners may be affecting the overall response effort.

Abstract:
In the beginning of 2020, the world was struck by the Covid-19 pandemic that inhibited many economies. Sweden was chosen because of its unique case when responding to the Covid-19 spread by applying an open policy in contrast to the implementation of total lockdowns.   The aim of this study is to explore the governmental budgetary responses to the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden. To fulfil this aim, the study focuses on the multi-level governance relationships between different national and local actors in Sweden. In order to explore Sweden’s unique case, an inductive approach was carried out through netnography, mass-media analysis and document analysis in the period between January 31 and May 15. The theoretical frame of reference is based on multi-level governance and actor network theory.   The study concludes that technology as a non-human actor has played a vital role when enhancing collaborations between different actors such as government, regions, municipalities, companies and universities, in order to minimize the infection spread and economic consequences of Covid-19. The study is a basis for continued research on the unexplored topic of crisis management of Covid-19 in Sweden.

Abstract:
The objectives of this research were investigate the lived experiences of school-going learners who are HIV-positive; and develop ecosystemic management strategies to help learners who are HIV-positive. The literature research investigation revealed that HIV/AIDS is not just a health problem but also attacks the education system itself. Demand for education is dropping and changing, many educators are ill and dying, and the trauma of loss associated with HIV/AIDS is entrenched in South African classrooms. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has a traumatic impact on all educators and learners. The work of educators both those who are HIV positive and those who have developed full-blown AIDS will be compromised by periods of illness. The pandemic thrives on sexual violence, male domination and child abuse in South Africa. It is the ecosystemic paradigm that helps in seeing the connecting link between family-school-community-society-world or school and peers and this helps in providing a more useful synergistic focus than trying to work in isolation with discrete segments of a microsystem for example, with an individual in isolation. Management strategies for dealing with HIV/AIDS include the notion that achieving sustainability requires bringing together a variety of legitimate stakeholders, drawing on a variety of accepted bodies of knowledge, to negotiate a learning path based on a series of conflict resolutions within ecological constraints. Continual learning based on free flow of information and mutual respect, and investment in effective management of HIV/AIDS are keys to success. The empirical research investigation revealed that psychologically disturbed, emotional well-being, spiritual well-being, physical well-being, social life, their scholastic performance, daily routine, there is a change in their behaviour or health after the HIV- positive status has been revealed, they fear of death, their academic performance at school is affected by absenteeism and lack of concentration, there is absence of strategies to assist learners who are absent frequently because of illness, they loose valued level of functioning, lack assistance at school, fear being discriminated or ridiculed, there is absence v of measures to deal with discrimination at school, there is a lack of information on HIV/AIDS, learners fear disclosing to friends and teachers, there is a lack of communication between parents and infected learners about issues regarding HIV/AIDS. Educators are also affected emotionally, spiritually and physically. They become affected socially and they do not cope with the impact of HIV. Abstract:
Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream worldwide. Illegal methods of transport, indifference in legislative response, and public ignorance of what to do in response, all influence e-waste proliferation. This dirty industry of e-waste is hazardous to human health and well-being as well as the environment. Since this dirty industry has ballooned over the last few decades, two major questions arise: What are the primary and secondary factors that influence the proliferation of e-waste dumping in developing countries; and what structures are emerging to combat the e-waste problem in developing countries in Africa? The following pages will investigate the e-waste problem in Africa; Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa. I will show the role that small and medium industries play in managing the e-waste problem. Through a mass media search of key SMEs and organizations, I find that local enterprises are taking on an extended responsibility to find economic incentives in the e-waste industry and transform it from a vastly hazardous waste stream to a cooperative trade and flourishing industry. The results of these case studies illuminate how lax government regulation and involvement forces smaller businesses and organizations to emerge as the leaders in e-waste management.

Abstract:
In addition to a global endurance test for the health system, the Corona pandemic triggered a tremendous social and economic crisis. Health professionals as well as politicians and business managers have to make decisions with considerable consequences under great time pressure. In this context, numerous international organizations - including Transparency International, GRECO and IACA - point out that the Corona crisis can be a breeding ground not only for conflicts of interest, but also for corruption. Even though quick decisions have to be made at present, it is clear that the strict prohibitions on corruption must be fully observed also in times of the Corona crisis. In order to avoid violations from the outset, existing compliance systems should continuously be updated and adapted to the current situation. This article begins with a description of possible forms of corruption in the health care sector that are particularly relevant in the current times of crisis. Finally, the article offers ideas for updates on the company's internal healthcare compliance system with regard to anti-corruption.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the influence of social media in building brand and relationship for sport organisations during a global pandemic.   Methodology: The methodology in this study is built on a qualitative method based on a inductive approach. The authors conducted semi-structured interviews when interviewing the sports organisations and fans. Furthermore, a content analysis was employed as it served the aim of the study best. Findings & Conclusion: With regards to building the brand through the use of social media, findings showed that transparency, the history of the club and their image play a vital role in building a distinctive brand. With regards to building their relationship through the use of social media, findings showed that although efforts were made by the hockey clubs to interact and engage fans with various strategies, there was a lack of consistency in order to build their relationship with their fans. Thus, the findings of the study revealed that sport organisations have been able to build their brand as well as maintain their relationship with their fans during the global pandemic through the use of social media. Contribution of the Study: The study has both theoretical contributions and practical contributions. With regards to the theoretical contribution, the study introduces a framework that focuses on what factors influences the effectiveness of social media (SM) use for sports organizations to build their brand and relationship with their fans. Also, to the practical contribution, consistency in interacting and engaging with customers on SM should be a top priority for sport organisations’ relationship managers to build their relationship with fans on SM. Reflections on the Study and Suggestions for Future Research: As the study has been limited to three hockey clubs from Swedish Hockey League, the scope of the study could be broadened in future research. Also, conducting a quantitative method is recommended for future research to determine the link between interaction and engagement. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how project participants experience the transition to remote work that took place with the Covid-19 pandemic and whether they experience that it had an influence on the knowledge transfer within projects. Through a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 project participants, which were then thematically analyzed. The themes appeared were “A double-edged sword”, “Compass in the darkness” and “Kaleidoscope of the future”. The results show that remote work is greatly appreciated and that the motivation for knowledge transfer remained unchanged. The biggest challenges are that the social aspect disappears to some extent and it is more difficult to interpret body language and facial expressions. The conclusion is that regardless of digital tools, it is still the human beings who is at the center, and digital tools must be adapted to fit into their context and purpose so that the knowledge transfer can be maintained in remote work.

Abstract:
Many large-scaled pandemics and disease outbreaks have been recorded in human history, causing enormous negative impacts on health, economies, and even affecting international security in the world. Recent years have seen many rapidly spreading outbreaks such as the Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, SARS, H5N1 influenza, H1N1 influenza, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), Ebola and the Zika virus. Not all of these diseases are new, but population movements have increased in both scale and speed, so there are greater risks that infectious diseases will spread rapidly to multiple countries. Pandemic crises have had serious consequences on health, tourism, travel, trade and have even caused significant political and social disruptions. Thus, effective public health emergency management to prevent and control pandemics is very important. For effective emergency management of pandemics, which are inherently unpredictable and widespread, preparedness, timely decision-making and comprehensive response involving relevant sectors are critical. But adequate preparedness and appropriate response rely on effective communication and coordination among stakeholders as well as the amount of information available at any given time, and these require a multi-sectoral approach with information sharing and communication as key tools for the prevention and management of infectious diseases outbreaks. However, multi-sectoral collaboration, coordination, information sharing and communication are often the key challenges and problems encountered in dealing with public health emergencies.

Urbonaite, Miglė. "Evaluation of non-pharmaceutical intervention effectiveness in Covid-19 pandemic by using excess mortality metric." Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Miljövetenskap, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-46154.

Full text
Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The study focuses on finding a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of the nonpharmaceutical intervention in the face of a new pathogen entering the population. Different interventions can have different effectiveness levels in different populations; thus, studying possible correlations and effectiveness among different groups is essential. With better knowledge of the topic, the outbreak management could be done more cost-effectively, reducing the need for antibiotics, vaccines, and possible reduction of infectious diseases caused burden in developing regions. Furthermore, the study aims to determine the ways of using excess mortality as an evaluation technique for nonpharmaceutical interventions used in the Covid-19 pandemic.  METHOD: The variables in time-series format were used to calculate a cross-correlation score alongside other correlation coefficient tests. With the cross-correlation, the lag will be established to estimate how the variables correlate in the timeline. In addition, the study will attempt to establish the connections between different nonpharmaceutical interventions and their strengths and different age groups. RESULTS: The most frequent lag scores identified were 1 with 16 observations and 2 with 9 observations. The highest lag score was 4, which was observed once for the dataset of Hungary. The correlation between excess mortality and different harshness of NPI's was calculated. The correlation coefficient ranges from -0.3 to -0.39, indicating an overall low to medium correlation. The highest correlation was detected with stay-at-home requirements (-0.36), workplace closing (-0.37), and gathering restrictions (-0.39). In the final step, age-based correlations were established. The correlation ranged from 0.26 – 0.36, indicating an overall medium correlation. The lowest correlation can be seen in the youngest age group, 15-64 (correlation coefficient of 0.26), while the highest correlation of 0.36 can be seen in the 75-84 age group. Surprisingly the age group 85+ had a little lower correlation than the 75-84 age group. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: A stronger correlation between excess mortality and stringency index was detected in the countries with a higher death per capita. The two groups of intervention effectiveness were established: more effective (school closing, workplace closing, public event limitation, gathering restriction, and stay at home requirement) and less effective (public transport limitation, restriction on internal movement, international travel control, public information campaigns, protection of elderly campaigns). This suggests that NPI effectiveness depends on population size. In the age-group-based analysis, the correlation became stronger with the age increase, indicating nonpharmaceutical intervention effectiveness against high mortality in older adults.

Abstract:
Aim. The purpose of this degree project was to assess the impact of the sudden, historically-unique COVID-19 workplace restrictions on the knowledge management and interrelated ICT utilization of a knowledge-intensive SME in Germany. Based upon the outcomes of this assessment, suggestions for future advancement were to be developed.Research Approach. The research approach entailed a qualitative case study addressing a single IT company with 42 employees. The research itself was conducted via triangulation, with the semi-structured interviews of four purposely sampled company executives serving as the focal part. Fundamental aspects of these interviews were further substantiated through four exploratory meeting observations and a company-wide questionnaire contributing 14 employee responses.Findings. Subject to the pandemic-related workspace restrictions, this company was forced to transition to predominantly virtual operations. The organization responded through the introduction of a new, integrated ICT for employee collaboration while simultaneously expediting the codification of tacit knowledge across two existing knowledge repositories. This focus on only a few essential ICTs led to a reduction of prior systems clutter and the company-wide accessibility of explicit knowledge – a quantum leap in terms of efficiency. Along with the primary collaboration via ICTs, a new interaction etiquette developed amongst employees, and IT-related staff was found to cooperate more actively than in the previous on-site environment. Given these insights, this German IT house is recommended to continue its emergently hybrid knowledge management strategy and consider the benefits of both the physical and virtual spaces for an office redesign past the COVID-19 limitations.Originality. Academic references attending to knowledge management during forced workplace restrictions were de facto nonexistent. Adding to it, previous studies on virtual knowledge management indicated a deterioration of performance as compared to on-site operations. This case study is hence not only unique by its pandemic link, but also countering apparent academic presupposition.

Abstract:
The written language of this paper is Swedish.   Background: The Covid-19 virus has come to demand huge requirements for all businesses. Research shows that different organizations has been affected in different ways during critical situations, how these situations is being answered and handled by the leaders can be crucial for the organizations future. However good leadership and critical situations is hard to define, the role of a leader during crisis is a very interesting subject in this moment when we are actually living during a pandemic right now.     Problem: The quick development around the spread of infection has demanded a lot for companies. Old routines and habits can’t be followed in the same way as before which causes worries inside the company by the employees. Management around the pandemic situation are important and at the same time the company has to proceed and manage to keep their regular work going on and manage to survive at longer terms. Even though this new way of work gains or inhibits the company some measures have to take action. The leaders must use their knowledge to handle certain situations in the best possible way. At the same time their own thoughts and opinions does not play a role in this when the work must be dealt with in a specific way. There is not a lot of experience when it comes to handle a specific crisis because the crises are brand new and unique which means that the leaders have to be beware of what can show up and how to take action for it. A leader needs to have a lot of knowledge around different areas depending on the situation to actually manage the complex situation the organization is facing.   Purpose: The purpose of this essay is to investigate the outcome of how leadership has been affected during the pandemic. The thought of this investigation is to involve leaders for the companies and also the employees. Our target is to create an understanding based on their thoughts on how to keep up a clear view on how good leadership actually has been affected during the pandemic.   Method: Our research strategy was to implement a study that creates a bigger understanding on how leadership affects during a critical crisis. In this investigation we’ve used two qualitative methods to get a wider and deeper knowledge based on the respondents. During this investigation a boundary has been made during the research for a small part of the company Volvo Lastvagnar AB on how specific the leadership has been affected.   The result: It’s basically nothing that is what it used to be when it comes to leadership compared to what it was before the pandemic. The study shows that the biggest element on leadership has been the distance work. The leaders do not believe that their style of leadership is doing great for the company, although if we ask the employees, they think it works which shows that there are a lot of different opinions in this area. The study shows that around during different working situations, there are a lot of opinions that actually affected the company positively because it has generated new and improved solutions on upcoming problems. The employees have been titled with more responsibility during work which has led to more creative solutions compared to earlier. By the bigger responsibility handed out by the leaders, the employees have a more positive feeling when it comes to life in general just because they have their own structure and planning of their work.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine how elite sports clubs and broad sports clubs inSweden, have been affected and managed the covid-19 pandemic. Also to do a comparative study in how broad-versus-elite sports clubs have been affected and handled the pandemic. The empirics were collected with the help from eight qualitative, semi-structured, digital interviews with various high-ranking people in eight different sports clubs. The essay is based on three different theories and models, namely Pettigrews model, the contingency theory and the situation-adapted leadership.  The study shows a number of differences in how broad-versus-elite sports clubs have been affected and handled the pandemic. Elite sports clubs have been allowed to carry out their activities to a greater extent than the broad sports clubs. Financially, the broad sports clubs have performed better than the elite sports clubs. The motivation among the employees has been lower among the broad sports clubs during the pandemic. The management of the pandemic´s various effects has mainly been handled through an increased digitization process.  In summary, it is possible to distinguish that the broad and elite sports clubs have been affected and handled the pandemic and the restrictions in different ways.

Abstract:
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are allowing their employees to work from home and consequently, impacts leadership. The purpose of this study is to investigate how managers in IT consultancies have experienced distance management during COVID-19 and what their key takeaways for the post-COVID-19 era are. The thesis has used a case study consisting of seven case companies, to answer the research question where the focus is on carefully selected managers as interview persons. Furthermore, with the help of a systematic literature review we have identified five main areas which are the basis for our theoretical framework. Throughout the study, the collected data is related to five main areas, which are: leadership, communication, trust, collaboration, and meetings. The key takeaways are the difficulties of leading a team over distance. Communication is more important than ever. How you best create a trustworthy workplace where the staff stands firm, trusts each other as well as maintain their cooperation at a distance are important and what approaches should be taken when it comes to virtual meetings. Lastly, this thesis contributes to the theoretical knowledge with the new framework and to the practical knowledge by providing guidelines for managers of virtual teams.

The past year has been a challenging year for all industries, including the constructionindustry. The construction industry is considered to have performed slightly better whencompared to other industries. With this in mind, despite the slow pace of change, theconstruction industry is still evolving innovatively to adapt its operations to the constraintsthat have emerged since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The purpose of the work is to investigate whether the Covid-19 pandemic has contributed toinnovative growth in the construction sector. The survey will look at how different companieshave adapted to, and whether the changes that have been made are temporary or willdisappear when society returns to normal. The study was chosen to do with a qualitative method. The literature used has been necessaryto be able to first explain the concept of innovation, and later delve deeper into theimplementation of innovation through the innovation tree (Hardie & Newell 2011).What has emerged during this thesis is that the construction industry has been affected by thepandemic, but not to the same extent as other industries. This is done by introducing newwork processes such as working digitally.

Abstract:
Tourism in rural areas has an important role of developing and altering the rural communities when it comes to the environment, social and economic structures. Rural areas have high potential in tourism development but the world is continuously experiencing the power of nature. December 2019 the world experienced the beginning of the Corona pandemic that would later affect the whole world in just weeks. The Corona pandemic has caused many problems throughout the world but one sector that was specifically affected was the tourism sector. Even though crises are to some extent random and rare, there is no organization that is immune from such events. Unfortunately, many tourism-oriented organizations have been affected by this crisis and there has been a marginal decrease in bookings from previous years. The purpose of this study is to examinate how different organizations manage, organize and plan for crises in rural destinations in Östergötland county. The focus lies on organizations that are dependent on tourism and that use tourism as their main sources of income. The study has a qualitative research approach meaning qualitative semi-structured interviews with organizations in rural destinations. The main findings were that organizations in rural areas don’t have experience about crisis management and therefore don’t adapt it in their organization. In order for organizations to reorganize and plan for the crisis there need to be guides and routines on how the organization will achieve it. By having different plans for different crises, the organization can be better prepared for the next one. The important steps in the reorganization are communication strategy, controlling resources and collaboration with stakeholders. No matter how big or small the organization is, it is important for each organization to have an organization plan in order to tackle and reduce the consequences of a crisis.

Abstract:
Covid-19 is one of the major plagues the world’s population has ever been confronted with and the purpose of this research will be to analyze the devastating economic impact of this pandemic through an operational risk management point of view. Small firms couldn’t cope with the effects of the pandemic and SMEs in general still are trying to find a way to save the business after severe losses and forced closures. Multinational companies, on the other hand, have to respond to this new crisis in a different and maybe more complex way. The strategies, both short and long term oriented, that companies and industries will follow in order to recoup, will have a huge impact on the national and global economies and also will define the future of the various sectors. Risk management comes back to have one of the most important roles in the different business environments, both in terms of promptness of the response and effectiveness of the strategies put in motion. After approaching the topic step by step, this analysis will highlight the impacts on the different industries, trying to give a panoramic of the main hit ones. One of the most hit industries was the automotive. This sector is characterized by continues changes and also has been facing a remarkable shrinking in the past years. Covid-19 put the ultimate challenge, forcing the production sites to shut down and the businesses to quicken up their decision-making processes. Kia Motors Europe will be taken as study case to understand the critical bullet points of how a company should face the problem, analyse the risks and take decisions to be able to keep the business under control. The factors involved in this process are several and there is of course no ex-ante proper way to confront with a crisis like the one created by the coronavirus. Furthermore, to go deeper in the firm’s mentality, some interviews to Kia’s managers will be presented and the key points highlighted.

Abstract:
Background: The economic crisis derived from the COVID-19 pandemic has an impact on the global economy and Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises are challenged to adapt their practices to the new consumer buying behaviour. As a response to economic crises, where consumer buying behaviour changes, companies are forced to innovate their marketing methods.  Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how Swedish SMEs manage the economic crisis derived from the COVID-19 pandemic through the relatively unexplored relationship between crisis management and marketing innovation.  Method: This research is an exploratory qualitative study focusing on Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises where semi-structured interviews were held with seven participants who were marketing responsible. A thematic analysis was applied to analyse the empirical data.  Conclusion: The empirical findings and the analysis suggest three main areas when answering the research question. 1) Marketing innovation improved the crisis management practice among the interviewed enterprises. 2) Marketing innovation is a common crisis management tool among the respondents of this study, and one reason why is because of the high capacity to innovate of the interviewees. 3) A new type of crisis management is arising because of the technological advancements and business climate.

Abstract:
Abstract Background:  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic a series of regulations and recommendations were imposed. This resulted in firms transitioning their co-located teams into virtual teams in an effort to slow down and prevent the spread of COVID-19. This research focuses on the individual team member’s experience of the transition. The transition is a digital transformation and organizational change and its effects on the individual team member is being studied.  Purpose:  The purpose of this research study is to explore how individual team members experience the transition from a co-located team into a virtual team. Trust, communication and social interactions are previously known challenges for virtual teams. Therefore, we strive to explore how these aspects have been affected by the transition and how the individual team member has experienced it.  Method:  This study follows a qualitative research design and the method of choice is semi-structured interviews that have been carried out in a virtual environment due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Eleven interviewees have contributed to the empirical study. The main findings are presented in chapter 4 and analyzed against existing literature in chapter 5, to finally be concluded in chapter 6.  Conclusion:  Trust has previously been listed as a major challenge for virtual teams. However, our empirical findings have not identified trust as a major challenge and therefore contradict this. Communication has changed and the biggest two contributors to this is that the communication is digital and that body language becomes less effective in a virtual setting as compared to face-to-face communication. However, communication has not been a major issue during the transition but rather a complication. Social interactions were identified as the aspect affecting the team members the hardest since they had become non-existent except for in the virtual environment in many cases. A high level of digital maturity and the teams previously being co-located is seen to have made the transitions easier in terms of trust and communication. Furthermore, team members struggle to find their work life balance and often work more hours.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate management and leadership at a distance during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. Eight managers from a large industrial company in Sweden currently working full time from home participated in the study, of which six were women. Semi structured interviews were carried out and the data was analyzed through thematic analysis which yielded 7 themes accompanied by 5 subthemes. Not being in the same physical space removes informal interactions, and to combat this, formalization has increased. Tasks that do not lend themselves well to formalization, such as getting a feel for co-worker’s emotional state or creative work, were found to be more difficult. The managers workdays had a high number of digital meetings, and their way of working was changed through digital adaptations. While the availability of quality social interactions with co-workers was down, digital meetings were used to keep interactions up within the work group. While work environment management was harder, work requiring heavy focus was described as more efficient when teleworking. Overall, the situation surrounding COVID-19 has been challenging for managers, but the digital space has evolved quickly, and work has still been able to function surprisingly well.

Abstract:
As the risk society has evolved, crisis management has become significant in order to survive a crisis. Crisis consultants have an important role in the risk society and organizations expects a whole lot from the profession. There is a gap in the research about the perceptions of crisis consultant’s role and expectancies in the risk society. Additionally, there is no research connected to the impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic on the profession of crisis consulting. The study aims to explore the crisis consultants view of and their role in the risk society. It also seeks to investigate how the crisis consultants have adapted to the Covid-19 pandemic. The study has been conducted through a qualitative case study consisting of various crisis consultants from diverse consultancies. The primary data consisted of eight semi-structured in- depth interviews. Crises in the risk society has become more complex due to the developing technology which has had an effect on the dispersion of information and personal exposures. Crisis consultants are expected to act as change agents who provides an outside perspective and pushes the client forward during crises. The Covid-19 pandemic has had no effect on the types of crisis and neither on the processes used by the crisis consultants. The shift lies within tools and certain procedures where social distancing and digitalization has become the new standard. Although the alterations have been challenging in some situations, the crisis consultants have still managed to fulfill their tasks and increase their workload.

Shi, Pengyi. "Stochastic modeling and decision making in two healthcare applications: inpatient flow management and influenza pandemics." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50367.

Full text
Abstract:
Delivering health care services in an efficient and effective way has become a great challenge for many countries due to the aging population worldwide, rising health expenses, and increasingly complex healthcare delivery systems. It is widely recognized that models and analytical tools can aid decision-making at various levels of the healthcare delivery process, especially when decisions have to be made under uncertainty. This thesis employs stochastic models to improve decision-making under uncertainty in two specific healthcare settings: inpatient flow management and infectious disease modeling. In Part I of this thesis, we study patient flow from the emergency department (ED) to hospital inpatient wards. This line of research aims to develop insights into effective inpatient flow management to reduce the waiting time for admission to inpatient wards from the ED. Delayed admission to inpatient wards, also known as ED boarding, has been identified as a key contributor to ED overcrowding and is a big challenge for many hospitals. Part I consists of three main chapters. In Chapter 2 we present an extensive empirical study of the inpatient department at our collaborating hospital. Motivated by this empirical study, in Chapter 3 we develop a high fidelity stochastic processing network model to capture inpatient flow with a focus on the transfer process from the ED to the wards. In Chapter 4 we devise a new analytical framework, two-time-scale analysis, to predict time-dependent performance measures for some simplified versions of our proposed model. We explore both exact Markov chain analysis and diffusion approximations. Part I of the thesis makes contributions in three dimensions. First, we identify several novel features that need to be built into our proposed stochastic network model. With these features, our model is able to capture inpatient flow dynamics at hourly resolution and reproduce the empirical time-dependent performance measures, whereas traditional time-varying queueing models fail to do so. These features include unconventional non-i.i.d. (independently and identically distributed) service times, an overflow mechanism, and allocation delays. Second, our two-time-scale framework overcomes a number of challenges faced by existing analytical methods in analyzing models with these novel features. These challenges include time-varying arrivals and extremely long service times. Third, analyzing the developed stochastic network model generates a set of useful managerial insights, which allow hospital managers to (i) identify strategies to reduce the waiting time and (ii) evaluate the trade-off between the benefit of reducing ED congestion and the cost from implementing certain policies. In particular, we identify early discharge policies that can eliminate the excessively long waiting times for patients requesting beds in the morning. In Part II of the thesis, we model the spread of influenza pandemics with a focus on identifying factors that may lead to multiple waves of outbreak. This line of research aims to provide insights and guidelines to public health officials in pandemic preparedness and response. In Chapter 6 we evaluate the impact of seasonality and viral mutation on the course of an influenza pandemic. In Chapter 7 we evaluate the impact of changes in social mixing patterns, particularly mass gatherings and holiday traveling, on the disease spread. In Chapters 6 and 7 we develop agent-based simulation models to capture disease spread across both time and space, where each agent represents an individual with certain socio-demographic characteristics and mixing patterns. The important contribution of our models is that the viral transmission characteristics and social contact patterns, which determine the scale and velocity of the disease spread, are no longer static. Simulating the developed models, we study the effect of the starting season of a pandemic, timing and degree of viral mutation, and duration and scale of mass gatherings and holiday traveling on the disease spread. We identify possible scenarios under which multiple outbreaks can occur during an influenza pandemic. Our study can help public health officials and other decision-makers predict the entire course of an influenza pandemic based on emerging viral characteristics at the initial stage, determine what data to collect, foresee potential multiple waves of attack, and better prepare response plans and intervention strategies, such as postponing or cancelling public gathering events.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis has been to explore how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the leadership and the direction of the organization.   The Covid-19 pandemic has affected various parts of the leadership. The results clearly indicate that managers feel overloaded since they have to handle a lot of administrative tasks and alternating meetings. Due to lack of time and balance between work and private life, the ability to have a holistic view, interpret and take in perspectives from outside-in and inside-out has been a challenge for the leaders. The results also indicated the need for clear communication between the leaders and the employees and their customers about what actions are required in order to adapt to the new situation that the pandemic has imposed.   During the pandemic the organizations were forced to take fast action based on the regulations and restrictions from the Public Health Agency and the government. Established digital channels were used but new digital channels had to be identified to create interaction and relations within the organization and with the customers.  The fast transformation to the digital world has affected the direction of the organization to think differently and be more flexible and adaptable to new unexpected changes, such as the pandemic. The organizations have used key indicators to identify and get a clear picture of how the pandemic has affected the direction of the organization internally and externally towards its customers. This new digital transformational shift has also forced the customers to enter new digital platforms and interact online with the organizations. The new digital awareness from the customers has induced new digital requirements and services which in turn have resulted in the need for new digital self-services and a higher and stronger digital competence from the organizations customer service.   A contributing discussion to the organizations and to the society is to refer to the concept of profitability as a value-creating effect sustainable over time, connected by three elements: leadership, direction of the organization and customer need.

Abstract:
The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has greatly impacted all of Sweden. This has led to Schools closing and multiple organisations restructuring to offer their employees the ability to work from home. In this study we examine how the middle managements leadership at Social Services have been affected by the virus and the change from a predominantly analogue workplace, to an increasingly digital workplace. There is many organisations that has been affected by covid-19, but the Social Services is a clear example of a organisation that has faced many challenges. To define the research area, focus has been placed on how middle management within the Social Services have handled the readjustment, how the middle management finds the change has affected their leadership and the impact on social interactions within the group. Middle management constitutes an interesting position to study since middle management is located between higher management and collaborators. Previous research shows that virtual teams, groups working via web-based platforms, have a harder time connecting, which has increased the use of digital tools can lead to technostress. Using the qualitative research method, six interviews were conducted. From the data, it can be concluded that there has been a change in the middle management leadership when it comes to how they plan the incoming work tasks. The results also show that social interaction has changed, with the increased usage of digital work tools, highlighting a different type of interaction. In addition, it was found that more interpersonal type of meetings and lunch breaks with colleagues have stopped.

Abstract:
Dessa forma o resultado demonstrou a eficácia e relevância da investigação titulada: “Diálogos Estudantis em tempos de pandemia COVID-19 Gabinete Virtual de Estudantes de Países de Língua Portuguesa para o Desenvolvimento de Habilidades de Mediação de Conflitos”; STUDENT DIALOGUES IN TIMES OF COVID-19 PANDEMICS: STUDENTS' VIRTUAL OFFICE FROM PORTUGUESE-SPEAKING COUNTRIES FOR CONFLICTS MEDIATION SKILLS DEVELOPMENT ABSTRACT: Education and the role of schools in the 21st century are major contemporary challenges, in a society marked by intense globalization, speed of events, digital transition and a growing social phenomenon of violence. These aspects increase the conflicts experienced in educational contexts, which, in turn, demand new learning, above all, based on the paradigm that includes cognitive, emotional and social knowledge. However, it is vital to broaden the understanding of concepts, contexts and methodologies that promote socio-emotional learning for students, so that they have skills and competences to respond to contemporary challenges, including managing and mediating conflicts, especially in educational contexts. Thus, the study presented here aims to develop a methodological intervention strategy with students, enabling them to develop socio-emotional skills and competences, for the management-mediation of conflicts and interpersonal relationships in an educational context. For this purpose, the action-research methodology was used. First, the data and information collected were processed in order to survey the conflicts in learning, the management strategies and the socio-emotional resources known by the participating students. This survey directed the intervention action through the formation and constitution of a Virtual Cabinet of Students from Portuguese-Speaking Countries for the Development of Conflict Mediation Skills, composed of 22 secondary school young people from three continents from the following Portuguese-speaking countries Portuguese: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe. The training had a collaborative approach, using active methodologies focused on promoting socio-emotional learning and conflict management. During the training, learning was measured to verify the fulfillment of objectives and goals. At the end, a training and learning evaluation questionnaire was applied. The result indicated positive effects of the intervention, as the data analysis showed a significant change in the use of strategies and effectiveness of applicability in the students' daily lives, improvement in interpersonal relationships, change in perception and consequent reduction of conflicts experienced. In the course of the intervention, an unfolding originated, providing new intervention actions, adding new learning and new subjects. In this way, the result demonstrated the effectiveness and relevance of the investigation entitled: “Student Dialogues in times of the COVID-19 pandemic Virtual Office of Students from Portuguese-Speaking Countries for the Development of Conflict Mediation Skills”.

Abstract:
Purpose: The pursuance of the sustainable development goals, introduced by the United Nations in2015, is of absolute necessity to build a sustainable future. Resilience-based crisis management helps tosustain an organisation and pursue its goal during crises. The aim of this research was to explore thestatus quo of resilience-based crisis management within public primary- and secondary schools in theNetherlands during school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the aim was todiscover which measures were in place to safeguard the provision of SDG 4. The exploration took placeto observe the adaptation capabilities within the educational sector, which could safeguard the provisionof SDG 4. Methodology: The aim was pursued by a qualitative approach. 17 semi-structured interviews with 18people were conducted during the time of the immediate Coronavirus crisis. All interviewees heldpositions within the crisis management of primary- and secondary schools in the Netherlands. Theinterviews were then analysed by the two researchers using thematic content analysis. Results: The results suggest that:(a) Crisis management structures in the schools foster resilience, yet, leave room for improvement;(b) Crisis management processes to foster resilience are present in the schools, however, the extentvaries and especially the pre-crisis actions were limited;(c) The sustainable development goals, especially the content of SDG 4, are little known in the schools;(d) Actions and measures to provide equitable and qualitative education during the temporary schoolclosures are in place. Implications: This research adds to the young field of crisis management within schools during schoolclosures as well as the provision of SDG 4 during crises through resilience-based crisis management.Since this research is of exploratory nature, many future research opportunities derive from this research.Furthermore, it discovered the strengths and challenges of the Dutch primary and secondary educationsector and gives room for development through education on SDG 4 and resilience-based crisismanagement.

Abstract:
Background: In March 2020, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, suddenly and completely unexpected, governments worldwide replaced face-to-face education with emergency distance teaching. Studies showed that students and teachers, in general, had been negatively affected by the strategy. Upper secondary school teachers and students in Sweden were affected and have now worked and studied from home for more than one year. Problem: Teachers were now asked to do extraordinary things regarding course delivery and learning. However, school curricula have not changed, and it has been up to the teachers to adapt their teaching to fulfil the curricula. Few studies provided teachers’ perspectives on this extraordinary situation and why it was essential to enter the teacher’s world and determine how this affected them and their work. Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore the Swedish upper secondary school teachers' experiences of Emergency Distance Teaching during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Three research questions were considered sufficient to answer this aim. Method: A qualitative narrative design captured the lived experiences of Swedish upper secondary school teachers. Stories from two teachers that worked in two different school contexts were collected. Result: The stories were personal, emotional, and revealing and answered the research questions. The Qualitative content analysis identified three themes: (1) Distant and Remote Communication, (2) Key are to be Present, Kind, and Innovative, and (3) Trials. Both teachers' most decisive change and challenges were the difficulties they experienced with maintaining connectedness and the interrupted teacher-student relationship, which was especially difficult in vocational programs. The result surprisingly showed that some students had benefitted from EDT and showed higher attendance than before. The stories showed how the teachers struggled to be creative to fulfil students' vital needs and often used outside-box strategies to manage. The teachers also showed how they felt lonely and how this had affected their job satisfaction and well-being. Significant, was that the result showed that the teachers had gained new skills and knowledge of how to handle the best teaching during school closure, even if it were not the teaching that they would prefer. Conclusion: Remote and distance teaching will become increasingly important in the future, considering Anthropogenic Climate Change. There is a strong call for a holistic transdisciplinary approach to identify and manage the organizational and psychological impacts of EDT on Swedish upper secondary school teachers. Strategies specifically targeting teachers working with vocational programs and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds are needed to avoid exacerbating existing disparities. Teachers required close contact with their students to have job satisfaction and they needed to be included and receive clear support, trust, and guidelines from school management.

Evidently, changes in crisis management and crisis planning practices are needed as the global pandemic continues to affect the industry. Most past studies put more emphasis on the crisis response and recovery rather than pre-crisis stage. Further, despite the negative impacts that crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have on the industry, hotel managers have continued to show limited attention towards crisis planning. Therefore, this study aims to explore the pre-crisis stage through the lens of the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), specifically, by gaining a deeper understanding about attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behaviour, in relation to the additional variables of perceived risk and past behaviour, in exploring the Senior Hotel Managers’ intentions towards future crisis planning. The TPB model was evolved through the addition of the two variables of perceived risk and past behaviour, in response to extant calls for researchers to further develop the TPB model. This exploratory study involved a qualitative methodology which was founded on 21 semi-structured online interviews with Senior Hotel Managers of quarantine hotels in Western Australia. Online interviews were the only option available at the time this study was conducted which was during the COVID-19 pandemic year of 2021, where strict government guidelines, protocols and restrictions needed to be followed. A combination of non-probability convenience, purposive, and snowball sampling methods were used to recruit participants. The study gathered information from knowledgeable and experienced participants who had experienced the phenomenon that is being studied and helped to answer this study’s research questions. Senior Hotel Managers were chosen based on the following criteria: (1) Senior Hotel Managers who have worked or were presently working in quarantine hotels in Western Australia; (2) hotels that have been used or were presently being used as a quarantine facility; and (3) participants have experienced the COVID-19 pandemic. As the data was unstructured and qualitative in nature, a computer-driven qualitative data analysis program which used machine learning to perform thematic analysis for the purposes of exploring the data, was used. Leximancer was the program which was used to identify common themes and key concepts that emerged from the data. Results showed that positive attitudes, reference groups, perceived difficulties, perceived risks, and past behaviour were considered as the factors which influenced Senior Hotel Managers’ intentions towards future crisis planning. In summary, results from this study identified five attitudes (crisis, closure, people, procedures, and timeline), four important reference groups (crisis committee, colleagues, government, and external individuals), four perceived difficulties (human resources, colleagues, time, and ambiguity), four perceived risks (human risk, management risk, and environmental risk), and three past behaviour (crisis experience, awareness, and future crisis) that played a role in the Senior Hotel Managers’ crisis planning intentions. These findings present vital theoretical and industry implications, and proffer important guidelines for future research and practices for improving future crisis planning in the hotel industry. These findings also provide lessons to other industries outside the hotel industry, and other countries beyond Australia, which can be immensely valuable during a crisis, such as the present COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
On March 18, 2020, colleges and universities closed as a measure to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus, and thus both teachers and students were quickly notified that lecture would be carried out at a distance. One year later, telework is still a fact, the rapid readjustment has become a protracted crisis. This study aims to investigate how job satisfaction among teachers has been affected as a result of working remotely. The study aims to contribute with an insight into how an extensive crisis as well as forced telework affects employees. The study hopes to shed some light on what leaders within the University need to offer, to maintain job satisfaction during telework as well as in a crisis. The study was conducted using a qualitative method, with 18 semi-structured interviews, with teachers at the University of Borås and Jönköping. The collected material has then been analyzed and structured using a thematic content analysis. The study's results indicate that distance work has both positive and negative effects. The positive effects are described, among other things, as reduced commuting and increased insight into digital tools, which may facilitate and improve traditional teaching. The results further show that the main negative effect is social isolation, which arises as an effect of the physical distance. Social isolation leads to lack of social contact with colleagues and students. Furthermore, the social isolation entails an increased workload, the work itself is described as boring in comparison to the traditional working environment. The interaction with students is reduced when the lectures are carried out digitally, which is reported to have a negative effect on some learning elements. The telework in its forced shape, leads to an increase in requested emotional support than in studies who have studied the effect of voluntary telework. The results also show that job satisfaction is currently relatively unchanged, however, this is considered to be due to the fact that the situation is still seen as temporary. The teachers point out that if they thought that teleworking was the new normal, their job satisfaction as well as motivation would have decreased. The study concludes that the lack of social contact with both colleagues and students has led to teachers experiencing increased fatigue. Thus, the study shows that teachers are in need of recovery, as well as increased support, regardless if the education returns to campus during the fall or not.

Abstract:
Being a leader in the public sector at a ward in an emergency hospital in the midst of a prevailing pandemic creates difficulties. The work must continue to function as usual in the organization, despite the large global spread of the Covid-19 virus. The focus is on the ward's two unit managers and their work to lead their working group for a safe and secure workplace that must also be patient-safe. The biggest focus in the essay is on how the unit managers and employees worked during the spring of 2020. The essay is based on conducted interviews with the two unit managers and their views on what it has been like to lead their working group during a pandemic. A survey was also conducted, which aimed to integrate employees' views on leadership as the width contributes to an interesting aspect of the essay. The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of whether leadership changes during a crisis and how leaders, together with employees, take on such a task. The study is based on qualitative and quantitative research methods. The results of the study show that the unit managers considered that communication was the biggest difficulty and change in the ward. By always having open office doors, they wanted to show their employees that they were welcome, for example if they felt worried or had a topic to discuss. The unit managers' idea with this was that they contribute to a community when all physical meetings have been canceled and a lot of social contact has been left behind during the pandemic. This is due to the restrictions that have existed regarding how many people can gather in a group.

Abstract:
Pandemic influenza outbreaks have historically entailed significant societal and economic disruptions. Today, our quality of life is threatened by our inadequate preparedness for the imminent pandemic. The key challenges we are facing stem from a significant uncertainty in virus epidemiology, limited response resources, inadequate international collaboration, and the lack of appropriate science-based decision support tools. The existing literature falls short of comprehensive models for global pandemic spread and mitigation which incorporate the heterogeneity of the world regions and realistic travel networks. In addition, there exist virtually no studies which quantify the impact of resource sharing strategies among multiple countries. This dissertation presents three related models that contribute to filling the existing vacuum. The first model develops optimal capacity management strategies for multi-region pandemic surveillance. The second model estimates the pandemic propagation time from the onset to a likely pandemic export region, such as a major transportation hub. The model builds on a large-scale agent-based simulation and geographic information systems (GIS). The model is tested on a hypothetical outbreak in Mexico involving 155 regions and over 100 million people. The third model develops an empirical relationship to quantify the impact of various U.S. - Mexico antiviral sharing strategies under several pandemic detection and response scenarios.

Abstract:
The increase of globalization of business led to the creation of global virtual software development teams in which communication plays an important role. The lack of recent studies raises the need to investigate communication in the context of agile and the current Covid-19 pandemic. This study identifies in literature three factors present in global virtual software development teams: technology, culture, and trust. It aims to explore how they influence internal communication. A qualitative method is conducted on a case study by combining data collected from semi-structured interviews and observations. The case study is a global virtual software development team which implemented the agile Scrum methodology. The findings provide a deep understanding of the positive and negative influences of the factors on communication, including their interrelations and context. Some of the main findings are: (I) the best set up for collaboration among global team members is the combination of synchronous and asynchronous communication through technological tools, (II) cultural diversity leads to differences in the ways members communicate, (III) trust is the precondition of working collaboratively and communicating effectively, (IV) global team members need to occasionally have in-person interactions to nurture their interpersonal relations, (V) the agile Scrum methodology influences internal communication positively, (VI) each communication factor is influenced by time; thus, the theoretical framework developed for this study is updated with this addition, (VII) the Covid- 19 pandemic affects communication to a certain extent.

Abstract:
Abstract  Background: Crisis management has become a highly relevant topic by virtue of the COVID- 19 pandemic. As a result, organizations have been forced to implement preventive actions to mitigate its impact. One of these implementations has been the enforced advancements for companies to readjust their businesses remotely. With remote working being a rather seldomly used practice for most organizations, managers are encouraged to enact and adopt quickly for their business to continue.  Purpose: This thesis aims to explore how managers of Swedish manufacturing firms handle organizational crises in a remote-working environment.  Method: This research follows a qualitative research method with an abductive approach. The findings are retrieved from conducted semi-structured interviews with eight managers in two different companies, which is then connected to relevant literature.  Conclusion: Findings show of great importance for managers to focus on communication with their employees. Implications of the crisis are ambiguous. Manufacturing firms in Sweden have experienced increased productivity at the expense of their employee’s well-being. Given that the future point towards increased usage of remote working, it is crucial for managers to focal their business on combining the benefits with the drawbacks and thereby successfully adjust to a digital working environment.
