Abstract:
The first recorded COVID-19 case emerged in China and, within a few months, it has spread to 210 countries globally, thrusting people into danger, uncertainty, fear, and of course physical and social isolation. The impacts of this pandemic are significant for every aspect of our lives. Crises include risk and chances at the same time. As Shakespeare said, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so“. This paper focuses on threats and opportunities of the pandemic crisis for humans and planet Earth. Crisis is defined as an unplanned and unwanted process of limited duration and impact, which endangers primary goals, and produces ambivalent outcome. Crisis management encompasses three phases: avoiding the crisis, identifying its symptoms when they occur and finding ways out of the crisis. There are several research questions related to that. First, could the COVID-19 crisis be avoided? Or at least could its onset be recognized early? Second, how can the pandemic crisis be measured in terms of its intensity and depth? Third, which ways lead us out of the crisis? And fourth, which lessons have to be learned? Exploring the novel literature and research findings provides new insights into the pandemic crisis and the crisis management process, which is the aim of the paper. With its results and major conclusions this paper provides a holistic perspective to the pandemic crisis and crisis management.

Abstract:
The pandemic disrupts the functioning of most sectors and exposes the shortcomings and vulnerabilities among many. Literature search in leading databases reveals that though shocked by the crisis, many industries and organizations have reinvented themselves through various strategies to overcome the consequences of the pandemic. After a thorough analysis of individual articles, the authors found out that human resource management considers the disruptive changes in the working pattern, challenges, and opportunities ahead and makes appropriate changes to create an efficient workforce for the future with the help of technology that has become an inevitable companion in human resource management and not a panacea for uncertainties and crises ahead.

Abstract:
The highly contagious disease COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has emerged as a global pandemic. The high rate of contact transmission of this virus is the major cause of concern nowadays. Owing to the absence of any effective drugs/vaccines against COVID-19, many countries adopted ‘lockdown’ to minimize transmission of virus. The other means that was applied during lockdown, to mitigate the growth of infection is the ‘test, trace, track and isolate’. However, different countries responded differently to these control measures with different outcome in the growth of infection. For now, several countries have started ‘unlock’, to handle the severe economic stress, created in response to lockdown. Again, lifting lockdown is another global threat, having the chance of second wave of infection. In such situation, the major challenge is to prevent the spread of infection, amid resumption of work. The present review is aimed to outline the prospect and future direction of disease management and current therapeutics against COVID-19.

Abstract:
The requirement to address risk in the prevailing business environment has been accentuated due to the constraints of the pandemic. It is proposed that the nature of risk context has been fundamentally altered by the global events of COVID. This paper provides a perspective that is based on an exploratory study of the identification and addressing of risk, in terms of business projects.A review of the literature has been undertaken and the key themes for the study topic identified. A senior manager, who is responsible for risk management at a company that runs international projects, was interviewed in an empirical study. A thematic analysis was performed, employing an inductive approach, in this research into a single case. The aim was to contribute to the prevailing literature and enhance understanding of the post pandemic business environment, in respect of risk management. The principal questions concerning risk and risk management are discerned. The objective is to consider risk in the post pandemic environment, in order to improve understanding of the issues relevant to business. The requirement to address these issues is also covered, with an attempt to determine the main themes from the research, in order to assist practitioners. The use of technology to support business continuity and achieve business objectives during the pandemic is discussed. An articulation of Lewin’s change model is proposed to summarise this work and assist in the comprehension of the contemporary situation.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a health emergency as a vaccine for it has not been found yet requiring the government to seriously manage it. Therefore, the government needs to effectively implement non-pharmaceutical measures. One of the measures to suppress the spread of the virus is public communication. The government’s public communication in dealing with COVID-19 has faced problems resulted in low public discipline and awareness thus far. This study used a quantitative approach with descriptive statistics analysis. The analysis does not generalize the result but it can explain the characteristics of the sample to formulate the meaning of the result. The findings show that the public communication management of the government of Indonesia has not been effective because the dissemination of public information is diverse and inconsistent. This is because the government gives freedom to various media to provide information to the public, which creates a gap in the management of COVID-19 in Indonesia and results in low public discipline and awareness (mean value 2,97). Therefore, it is difficult for the government to deal with and manage health emergencies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Research has shown that the government must provide the public with consistent and valid information (mean value 3,51), monitor and supervise mass and electronic media, and use social media and online media to provide valid information from the government and disseminate positive and educative information to the public (mean value 4,06).

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic affects all sectors of life. The government has made various efforts to respond to the impact of the pandemic, but the success of government efforts is determined by public perceptions. Communities have an important role in shaping collective behavior in responding to pandemic disasters, there are people who respond well to pandemic disasters and there are people who underestimate pandemic disasters. The formation of public perceptions is caused by the lack of knowledge about the pandemic and the virus itself, so it is necessary to form public perceptions about the Covid-19 pandemic through disaster risk management. This community service activity aims to provide understanding and public awareness as a preventive effort in shaping the public's perception of responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. This community service activity is carried out by means of socialization and training to the community in Suko Sewu District, Bojonegoro Regency. The results of the pre-test and post-test on the practical knowledge of the community showed an average increase of 85 percent. With these results, it can help the public in forming perceptions about the Covid-19 pandemic and can transmit these perceptions to the surrounding community. abstrakPandemi Covid-19 berdampak pada semua sektor kehidupan. Abstract:
Discourses on pandemics often prioritize germane pharmaceutical issues while largely ignoring the social dimensions to them, especially the paradoxical role of transportation in pandemic transmission and management. Granted, from an epidemiological perspective, transportation is technically a vector of pandemics; however, by sustaining continuous critical supply chains and facilitating the conveyance of interventions during pandemics, transportation also plays a crucial role in pandemic control and management. Indeed, studies have shown that the risk of disease transmission can be significantly reduced by the observation of non-pharmaceutical transport protocols. Against this background, this paper highlights the dual roles of transportation in aiding and curbing pandemics, with a strong emphasis on the latter. Moreover, towards consolidating on the strengths of the transport sector in the control and management of public health issues, this paper underscores the sacrosanctity of responsible transport. Challenges were identified, and practicable recommendations were proffered towards containing them.

Hansell, Fredrik, and Axel Vällfors. "Demand Side Management : how has residential electricity demand changed during the corona pandemic?" Thesis, KTH, Energiteknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-298849.

Full text
Abstract:
Restrictive social distancing measures imposed by governments across the world to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have led to immediate changes in general behaviour and habits, which has had major effects on electricity systems. The pandemic has highlighted the great importance of reliable electricity supply in society as many people were forced to start working from home and thus became entirely reliant on digital modes of communication and information sharing. However, the resilience of energy systems could become weakened in the future as the share of intermittent renewable energy sources keeps increasing. If working from home were to become the norm in the future, knowing how households’ electricity load curves are affected by such a change could be valuable and help increase capabilities of demand side flexibility in the household sector. In this project, appliance-level electricity demand data gathered from Swedish households is used to create a simple bottom-up model. The purpose of the model is to be able to evaluate how the total electricity demand in a residential area changes after implementing behavioral changes at a household level. Specifically, the model was used to evaluate the effect of certain households in a region switching to working from home. Results were obtained from the model in the form of estimated changes in the electricity demand for different proportions of teleworking households. These changes were then combined with electricity demand data from a residential area in Stockholm to create new load curves that show what electricity demand could look like for the residential area at different shares of households working from home. The final results are presented in the form of estimated changes in electricity demand, peak power and electricity consumption for 30, 60 and 90 percent of households working from home. The results showed that weekdays' average load profile may have changed considerably in 2020 for residential areas similar to the one studied in Stockholm. For all scenarios, the change in electricity demand was most noticeable in the middle of the day, when the peak power increased significantly. During the evening, however, neither the electricity demand nor the power peak changed significantly. The peak power during normal working hours increased by 11,6% to 17,1% depending on the season, while total electricity consumption on an average weekday increased by 4,9% to 7,4% compared to pre-pandemic values. Still, the overall weekday power peak typically occurring around dinner time remained nearly unchanged. However, examining the results for different shares of households working from home shows that if almost all were to work from home, the overall peak power could shift from occurring in the evening to the middle of the day. If a new measurement campaign of Swedish households were to be conducted in the future, the ability to predict and prepare for the electricity demand of tomorrow’s homes would improve greatly.

Chaudhry, Chhaya S. "Emerging Diabetes Pandemic in India| A Case Study for an Integrative Approach." Thesis, Walden University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3665809.

Full text
Abstract:

Every day, India sees the addition of 5,000 new cases of diabetes to its current diabetic population of 65 million people. This number is projected to cross the 100 million mark in 15 years. The emerging pandemic scale of diabetes growth is straining India's already-overburdened public healthcare resources. India is home to several well-established native and adapted foreign traditions of medicine that are widely practiced. These traditions include Ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homeopathy. The modern and traditional medicine approaches are extensively used as independent systems. The purpose of this qualitative research case study was to evaluate the use of an integrative approach to address the multiple challenges posed by diabetes in India. The research design for the case study was based on the theoretical framework of participatory action research. The research questions evaluated how the modern and traditional medicine systems can be jointly used to contain the spread, scale, and immensity of diabetes in India and examined the barriers and challenges in combining various systems of medicine. Data were collected from interviews with 30 modern and traditional medical practitioners and 6 policy makers identified through a stratified purposeful sampling process. The transcribed data were coded thematically and objectively analyzed. The trustworthiness of interpretations was bolstered with triangulation through records from notes and observations. In evaluating the feasibility of a synergistic and integrative approach, the study filled a gap in scholarly literature. The study contributes to social change by adding to the existing body of knowledge available to physicians and patients in preventing and containing the diabetes pandemic.

Abstract:
Pandemic outbreaks are unpredictable as to their virus strain, transmissibility, and impact on our quality of life. Hence, the decision support models for mitigation of pandemic outbreaks must be user-friendly and operational, and also incorporate valid estimates of disease transmissibility and severity. This dissertation research is aimed at 1) reviewing the existing pandemic simulation models to identify their implementation gaps with regard to usability and operability, and suggesting research remedies, 2) increasing operability of simulation models by calibrating them via an epidemiological model that estimates infection probabilities using viral shedding profiles of concurrent pandemic and seasonal influenza, and 3) developing a testing strategy for the state laboratories, with their limited capacities, to improve their ability to estimate evolving transmissibility parameters. Our review of literature (Aim 1) indicates the need to continue model enhancements in critical areas including updating of epidemiological data during a pandemic, smooth handling of large demographical databases, incorporation of a broader spectrum of social-behavioral aspects, and improvement of computational efficiency and accessibility. As regards the ease of calibration (Aim 2), we demonstrate that the simulation models, when driven by the infection probabilities obtained from our epidemiological model, accurately reproduce the disease transmissibility parameters. Assuming the availability of sufficient disease reporting infrastructure and strong compliance by both infected population and healthcare providers, our testing strategy (Aim 3) adequately supports characterization of real-time epidemiological parameters. Future research on this topic will be aimed at integrating the laboratory testing strategy with our modeling and simulation approach to develop dynamic mitigation strategies for pandemic outbreaks.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic had a worldwide economic effect, and it seems to have produced a challenging economic climate for startups to work in. Thus, the aim of this degree project is to investigate how startups survived the financial and organizational crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and what was the role of their employees during the crisis. The objective is to look at how early-stage startups in Greece are dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, whether they can utilize crisis management models, and how the crisis encourages creative destruction. Schumpeterian innovation theory has been merged with crisis management theories to achieve this goal. The thesis employs a qualitative methodology and uses a multiple case study design where cases are the individual startups interviewed. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with a top-management representative of each company.  The results indicate that the startups under discussion are experiencing significant changes. At the beginning of the crisis, they faced a threatening disengagement and demotivation of their employees, which they managed to overcome by focusing on their wellbeing, coaching them, and guiding them through the crisis. The Caplanian model was utilized to analyze their approach. Based on the companies’ core competencies, they are actively pivoting to emerging business models and new markets. These companies are discovering new possibilities and innovating in a number of areas, following both the Schumpeterian evolutionary theories of creative destruction and creative accumulation. Overall, the findings suggest that in responding to the crisis, startups modified and strengthened their strategies. The shift in customer purchasing behavior was a major reason why businesses needed to develop their strategies. The modified consumer behavior was the outcome of actions taken by the Greek government and the Public Health Agency to avoid the spread of the virus such as social distancing, travel bans, and closed borders.

Abstract:
New public Management was implemented as a response to growing welfare andan expensive public sector. 30 years later, the spread of New Public Managementappears to have contributed to an increasingly unhealthy working environment.Social work is now characterized with a big emphasis on continual efficiencyprojects, a growing burden of documentation and a decentralized budgetaryresponsibility due to this. Furthermore, numerous politicians have criticised themodel and many welfare professions become ill in this context. Therefore, socialworkers are using different coping strategies to cope with the organizationalsituations. Today the social work in Sweden is in a new situation due to the globalpandemic that came with the spread of the Coronavirus. This may affect how socialworkers experience and cope with New Public Managements focus on constantefficiency actions because there might be opposition between this andFolkhälsomyndighetens recommendation of curbing the spread of the Coronavirus. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to study social workers experience ofefficiency, budget, documentation and which coping strategies social workers useto cope in a new context characterized by both New Public Management and apandemic. This study addresses the research problem with a qualitative method, more specifically, with help of semi-structured interviews. Eight interviews wereconducted with social workers within Region Skåne and Socialtjänsten. Empiricaldata is analysed with a holistic approach consisting of three theories: Gestaltpsychology, Coping strategies, and Natural Attitude. The results show thatefficiency, budget, and documentation govern to a certain extent, however, theyappear to be less important and meaningful to the individual social worker as beforethe pandemic. The results also show a discrepancy between individual socialworkers and management's views on efficiency, budget, documentation, and whatbecomes important to social work in a pandemic. The result also shows that socialworkers use eight different coping strategies in the practical sphere within thepandemic. Finally, there are three takeaways from the result, pertaining to: anunprepared organisation in relation to the pandemic, a distanced social work, and asluggish bureaucratic readjustment.

Today, stakeholders expect organizations to be able to endure external shocks. Hence, the real potential of an avian flu pandemic has many corporations developing business continuity plans for the disruptions that a pandemic may cause. For the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry, the major concerns of a pandemic include high employee absentee rates, lack of accessibility to the medical facilities, and disruption to the product supply chain. This work introduces social amplification of risk theory to evaluate the potential impact of a pandemic to a business due to heightened fear. It uses a case study of Genzyme Corporation and evaluates pandemic related risks to two of its major products. By applying a system dynamics framework to evaluate the mechanisms for the amplification of risks, a solution is proposed. The lessons introduced in this work can help organizations evaluate the true risks of catastrophic events.

Abstract:
Romanian economy has been, for almost two decades now, based on consumption. Thus, private consumption has become a vital element in supporting national economy and everyday life, with peaks and lows. Numerous studies have documented the Romanian consumer’s behaviour and purchasing trends, concluding that Romanians are more than just customers, rather “patients”. Big retail chains have become "the main cause" for their illness, called consumerism. Before the pandemic, Romanian customers chose to acquire goods that they did not need, just because they were trending or because it brought them a boost of image within their social group. On the other hand, from the point of view of sales targets and other economic indicators, that retailers use to build their strategies upon, it can be understood how this “disease” is increasing, transforming consumerism into a real national (with international reach) pandemic. The profit of large retail companies has shown that in peacetime (without war, cataclysms, or other adverse events), retail companies know how to manage their business and, above all, understand how to influence buyer behaviour. Under Covid pandemic threats potential customers’ access to physical premises had been restricted, therefore retail companies swiftly adapted to the Governmentally influenced change of buying patterns by increasing online accessibility. We have investigated through a quantitative analysis how pandemic procurement and consumption trends varied under these circumstances. Our research showed results that we found easy to predict, but difficult to explain from an economic point of view, mainly due to the psychological impact external factors played in general economy.

Abstract:
The subject of the paper is human resource management during the pandemic. The authors highlighted two issues: the influence of human resource management on business results in tourism and the impact of COVID-19 on labor law, psychological and interpersonal relationships in organizations dealing with tourism. The scientific goal is to confirm the hypothetical assumption that the COVID-19 pandemic limited and modified activities related to human resources management in tourism in emergency conditions. The paper uses the general scientific statistical and comparative method and method of document content analysis. The end effect of the work is two results: one, that COVID-19 affects the quality and quantity of human resource management in tourism, and the other, that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly reduces the satisfaction of basic tourism needs and requires the involvement of more institutions to preserve the satisfaction and safety of tourism employees and users of tourist services. The ultimate purpose of the paper is to harmonize the Labor Law regulations in the conditions of mass pandemics.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 epidemic had a significant impact on the global economy, harming both entrepreneurs and SMEs. This pandemic made the global economy to tremble and is causing enormous disruptions to people's lives and daily lives as well as to social and economic structures worldwide. Because of its tremendous transmission potential, this virus has spread unevenly throughout the entire world. COVID-19 is a serious health emergency, but it's also much more. It is a systemic disruption that will have significant effects in the short, medium, and long-term. Tens of millions of people have lost their jobs as a result of this virus, which has also had other negative consequences on companies and caused a significant short-term economic downturn. This research does a theoretical evaluation to analyze the repercussions of the epidemic for entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial challenges in post pandemic era. Digital technology's vulnerabilities grow as it permeates society and the economy. Furthermore, the introduction of new technology solutions will be perceived as requiring a strong focus on privacy and cybersecurity.

Abstract:
Tourism has been severely and directly affected by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, as the economic contribution of tourism in 2021 was US$1.9 trillion, below the pre-pandemic value of US$ 3.5 trillion in 2019. The tourism management was confronted with the restriction of the activities carried out, the dismissal of the staff, the impossibility of paying the taxes, the stagnation of the planned events. Innovative solutions had to sprout in the minds of managers through new and thriving strategies. This paper explores the management strategies introduced by major hotel chains to revitalize and relaunch their business. The results show an involvement of managers to increase guest loyalty, to provide excellence in services, and to create memorable experiences for guests. Also, new concepts, such as workcation, staycation, revenge travel have taken shape in managerial tourism strategies.

Abstract:
The year 2020 began with the coronavirus pandemic, which led to one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history, sending the world economy into a crisis that is hard to estimate, with a steep drop in economic growth and a recession with grim prospects of a return to its original situation. We are talking about major social, economic and political challenges, with implications that will be very difficult to manage in terms of social life, health care, unemployment or economic development. The current context of the global crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic, the implicit transformations that have occurred in the management of public administration has required a change in the classical attitude towards crisis management and management, namely the adoption of a more complex and comprehensive one, which will give you a firm concern for the affected areas, by resorting, where necessary, to a military management to solve the crisis. Military leadership is a strong one, with special training, that makes it able to manage crisis situations, because we are talking about people who are used to making decisions in conditions of uncertainty and having insufficient information. The document presented is a study that examines the role played by the military environment in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, given that it has generated a complex chain of socio-economic effects, and the need to involve military capabilities is more than necessary, considering one of the mission of army is supporting the authorities during unexpected situations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has infiltrated every level of social, cultural and political life and has demonstrated the truly devastating effects of ineffective pandemic management systems. Yet, the likelihood of another pandemic occurring in the short to medium term is greater than ever. The drivers of pandemics are not improving. Anthropogenic drivers, including agricultural intensification, land-use changes such as deforestation and urbanisation, wildlife trade and climate change are all contributing to what has been called the ‘era of pandemics’. This report contains key findings and research around pandemic prevention and zoonotic disease risk management.

Fleming, Joanna, John I. MacArtney, Abi Eccles, Catherine Grimley, Helen Wesson, Catriona Mayland, Sarah Mitchell, et al. Impact of Covid-19 pandemic on Hospices (ICoH): Senior Management Cohort and Grey Evidence Report. University of Warwick Press, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.31273/978-1-911675-05-1.

Full text
Abstract:
This report describes the diversity of experiences of people with life-limiting illnesses who were supported by hospices in the West Midlands during the pandemic. It is one of four cohort reports – the others focus on patients, carers, and frontline hospice staff respectively – that form the evidence base for a Policy Report into the impact of Covid-19 on hospices. In these reports we address the nine key themes that were identified as potentially important in our previous collaborative knowledge synthesis (MacArtney et al., 2021) and seek to address some of the policy gaps we identified in our review of recommendations for hospice practice and policy (van Langen-Datta et al., 2022). Together these outputs are the result of an Economic and Social Research Council funded study (grant number: ES/W001837/1) that is one of the first studies to contribute an in-depth exploration of hospice-based experiences of the pandemic to the growing body of knowledge about the effectiveness and effects of changes to hospice services, at regional and national levels, in response to Covid-19. As the key decision makers during the Covid-19 pandemic, this part of the ICoH study aimed to explore senior managers’ experiences and to understand how they responded to the challenges imposed on them whilst still delivering a high-quality palliative care service. Coupled with hospice grey evidence in the form of, for example, senior management emails to staff, policy and guideline documents, we can start to understand the pressures and context in which decisions were made, including what worked well and what did not. The aim of this report is therefore to explore experiences of senior managers during the Covid-19 pandemic to identify recommendations for clinical practice and healthcare policy. Drawing on these findings, this report offers recommendations for hospices managers and clinicians who continue to provide care and support for people with life limiting conditions during the ongoing pandemic. These recommendations will also be of interest to local commissioners who will need to work with hospices in their region to ensure people with life-limiting conditions receive the support they need, and national policymakers who will need to ensure the necessary resources and guidance are available.
