Full textThis thesis recounts the history of the Huntley and Palmers biscuit company, based in Reading from 1841 to 1977. It examines the development of the company through the successive innovations and modernisations, from the traditional family firm to the modern firm that would eventually be absorbed by larger groups. This work studies the impact of the biscuit giant on British society and on the world at large by a survey of its production, in terms of food as well as visual production, by using elements of material culture present in the company’s official archives as well as original collections. It also investigates the question of paternalism and paternalist practices at Huntley and Palmers’, so as to locate these measures and the ideology behind them in a national context. These practices are assessed in the light of the different varieties of paternalism and enable us to map the evolution from a typical nineteenth-century brand of paternalism towards institutionalised “new paternalism” followed by a form of “post-paternalism” characteristic of modern companies. Finally, the thesis lays emphasis on combining the employers’ perspective with that of the employees in order to go beyond the vision of the company that transpires from the official archives

Full textThe relation between the juçara palm and the social actors on the North Coast of Rio Grande do Sul is represented by the socio-environmental conflict between illegal extractivism and the sustainable use of the species. The juçara palm in the history of the Atlantic Forest has important ecological, cultural and socioeconomic importance. In spite of the fact that the palmito cutting and theft actions carried out by environmental violators are still recurrent, many family farmers manage juçara palm in agroforestry yards, intercropping, natural occurrence areas combining agro-ecological agroforestry production and species conservation in agroecosystems in the region. The main objective of the research work was to understand the dynamics of sociotechnical practices of social actors and the production of novelties associated with the sustainable management of the palm tree. The specific objectives of the research were to identify the social actors, to describe the socio-technical practices, to characterize the novelties and the network of interlinked novelties. The theoretical-methodological framework mobilized in the work consisted of the interface of the theoretical elements of the Actor-Oriented Perspective, Multilevel Perspective (sociotechnical transitions) and the production of novelties. The construction of the research was based on a qualitative approach of case study where methodological elements of the ethnographic research were used as participant observation, semi-structured interviews and informal dialogues with social actors in the rural communities of Aguapés, Vale do Maquiné, Morro Azul, Arroio do Padre and Chapada do Morro Bicudo in the North Coast of Rio Grande do Sul. As a result of the analysis of the empirical study in rural communities, the emergence of innovations (technical-productive, organizational and access to social markets) was identified, which in turn generated interconnected novelties established from the sociotechnical practices associated with the juçara palm by the social actors.

Full textThe Atlantic Forest biome is recognized worldwide as a hotspot of biodiversity. As a strategy to meet the challenge of its management, UNESCO and the Brazilian government established the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, which aims to promote the conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and the scientific and traditional knowledge on its components. In this management system, various segments of society concerned with the issue are represented. The slopes of the Southern Plateau on the North Coast of Rio Grande do Sul is the southern limit of occurrence of the Atlantic Forest stricto sensu. This region has gone through different phases of occupation, having farming always a central role in its economy. As a result of ecological, economic and legal changes, these areas, where once agriculture was practiced intensively, had substantially reduced its use, returning to be covered by the ecological succession of the forest. Legal restrictions on land use (with the environmental monitoring intensified from the 1990s) came to deepen the process of socioeconomic marginalization of a segment of the population resulting, among other effects, in impoverishment and migration from rural areas. Faced with this situation, a number of social actors have sought to promote sustainable use of non-timber forest products from native biodiversity, considering it capable of combining income generation and biodiversity conservation. These actors are imbued with different philosophical concepts, particularly with regard to the ethical dimensions (different moral valuations) and ontology (different understandings on “human / nature relationship”). In early 2008, some institutions (the thesis author participating of one of them) have led to the State Committee for the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve of Rio Grande do Sul (CERBMA) the issue of the fruits of juçara-palm (Euterpe edulis). This species is used in an unsustainable way to extract the palm heart (apical meristem), an activity largely carried out clandestinely and that led to the species being considered endangered of extinction. In this sense, the use of its fruits provides an alternative to the conservation of the species. In CERBMA several meetings were held which culminated in the adoption of the "Pilot Project for sustainable use of the fruits of juçara-palm. This construction process is the object of analysis in this thesis. Since its theoretical commitments, in the process of biodiversity management are involved various dimensions: from the more specific, referring to the ecological knowledge and management systems, to the more general, relating to institutional arrangements and the ontology and ethics involved. This study examines the Pilot Project on the broader dimensions (philosophical and institutional arrangements), discussing the more specific in relation to them. The research problem that motivates it, therefore, is: given the public debate about collecting fruits of the juçara-palm held under CERBMA and its consequences, which institutional arrangements on biodiversity management were established and which philosophical issues, including ethical and ontological dimensions are expressed in these debates? To answer this question, field research was carried out with data collection by participant observation at the 14 public meetings that dealt with this matter and semi-structured interviews with 13 social actors involved. The analysis of this material allowed us to characterize the process as a case of co-management of biodiversity where the criteria for the handling were defined on the base of scientific and traditional knowledge, and institutional arrangements for managing the project were built between the actors involved. A focal point of discussion was about how monitoring of the activity should be done. As to the ontological dimension, we identified elements of a dissociative ontology characteristic of modernity (which divides the Nature and Society in completely different ontological fields) that tends to divide the farm management among preservation and use. Were also identified elements of an ontology that allows an integrative management of biodiversity on the farm where the conservation of biodiversity and its use are combined. It is argued that this view is more appropriate. As for the ethical dimension, were identified, in the discussion, elements of a biocentric valuation aligned to the dissociative ontology, and elements of an ecocentric valuation, aligned to the integrative ontology. Consequences of each of them on the use of the environment are discussed. The actors did not identify each other by an evaluative perspective concerned only with the pecuniary profit (called here chrematocentric valuation). Although different ontological and ethical perspectives were present in these public debates, that has not stopped the building of a consensus on the need to create, with the Pilot Project, an institutional arrangement involving governmental and nongovernmental institutions in managing biodiversity.

Full textVarious igneous bodies have intruded the Palmer area throughout the Delamerian Orogeny. The earliest, the Rathjen Gneiss, intruded either before or during D1 which gave it the prominent foliation. D1 was also responsible for crenulations in migmatite veins throughout the area. These crenelated migmatite veins are in areas folded by D2 mesoscale folds. Some pegmatite veins are also folded by D2 folds. The Palmer Granite intruded during D2 as is seen by shearing in a semi-crystalline state and a tectonic foliation that has been folded. The ballooning of the granite during emplacement deforms the surrounding sediments and the pre-granite folds hence their axes lie parallel to the contact of the granite. The effect of the granite intruding during the deformation has lead to the axis of the D2 folds forming after the granite to have a degree of randomness about their axis. Migmatite grade was reached again after the intrusion of the granite causing melt veins to develop to disrupt the foliation. D3 formed a regional syncline of the area combined with some small scale folding within the granite, however a foliation did not form. The emplacement of the granite and some other igneous bodies throughout the area has been controlled by using the bedding plane of the Kanmantoo. The geochemical trends throughout the Palmer Granite is formed by two different groups fractionally crystallising zircon, amphibole and biotite. This results in a decrease of normally incompatible elements. The two groups form by one group from a homogeneous source and the other a heterogeneous source. The xenoliths crystallised from a mafic magma. The amphibolites form two groups according to their differentiation and genetic relationship. They both form by fractional crystallisation however U and Pb are decreasing cannot be explained by this. Another possible mechanism is liquid un-mixing. To tie all of the groups together a model of a mafic pluton that crystallises the xenoliths as a chilled margin. The mafic magma evolves some of the Palmer Granite whilst turbulently convecting hence homogenising the magma. A magma recharge forms the more evolved mafic and this forms more Palmer Granite which convects in a laminar fashion forming heterogeneities. Part of the mafics evolve enough to be caught up in the Palmer Granite and as it does not crystallise zircons all the fractional crystallisation of the Palmer Granite must have occurred in the mafic plution.
