Abstract:
Minangkabau architecture is one of the most identical vernacular architectures in Austronesian world. This research aims to compare and analyze the microclimate of two Minangkabau vernacular houses in villages of Balimbing of Bukittinggi, Sumatra, Indonesia. One of them is covered with palm-sheath roof, and the other is covered with zinc roof. After investigation and a series of measuring assessment, we discover that as human residence, the interior environment of the house with the palm-roof is more comfortable than the zinc-roofed house. Due to a more successful prevention and reduction to high temperature and humidity of the inner space, the palm-roof is recognized as the better housing model to be pursued and using natural material as the efficient resource for the local community.

Abstract:
Conserving the traditional Malay Kutai houses as our building heritage is important before they perish due to neglection. For maintenance purposes, the palm leave roofs are replaced with more durable materials such as zinc or onduline roof sheets. Replacing the building materials without understanding their properties could cause harmful effect on the indoor thermal comfort. Previously, there is minimal quantitative research done to prove that the traditional Malay house is thermally comfortable. Thus, this research intends to measure the thermal comfort parameters of Kutai house and analyse the result using a bioclimatic chart. The results revealed that the average thermal comfort conditions of the Kutai houses are within the boundaries of comfort zone as recommended for natural ventilated buildings despite using zinc roof.

Abstract. Public housing has become Indonesian Government’s main consideration since 1970s. As one of public welfare indicator, three categories of house based on its material are amongst government’s policy of public housing. Discussing the impact of government’s public housing policy implementation into traditional houses in Indonesia is the aim of this article. Qualitative method consists of field survey and desktop survey used as primary data collection. Field survey at Bada was conducted in 2012 and followed by desktop survey. Result of the study shows that traditional houses built from organic materials like wood, thatch, bamboo, rattan, palm fiber, and leaves, considered as non-permanent house. Thus, the category is a legitimation for people to shift from traditional houses to modern houses (permanent house), following social and economics factor that triggered the phenomena. In Bada it happened in rapid movement and endangered the existence of traditional houses. Keywords: traditional house, policy, government, BadaAbstrak. The biometrics system is an individual recognition technology using human body parts or behavior. Palm and fingerprints, each biometrics example based on body parts and human behavior. Image matching is a way to identify images. This research uses biometric technology, a system that performs image matching based on human body parts by matching test images received with training images contained in a database. The image used is the palm of the hand. The use of the palm because the palm has unique characteristics, is difficult to fake and tends to be stable. There are 10 samples of the palm image that will be used using the Otsu method and the Math Morphology method, which were previously filtered using a median filter and turned into grayscale. From 10 different samples showing different results with an average similarity level of 96.28%, the method proves that the palm joints are a characteristic that is owned by everyone, and it also proves that the palm can also used as an alternative to protect privacy, not just fingerprints for home security.

Abstract:
Waste water from oil palm mill can be utilized for irrigation and fertilization on plantation land (land application) because it contains nutrients required by plant and its capability to decrease negative impact on environment. The waste water was sprayed on oil palm plant having 4 months, 8 months and 12 months old. This study was conducted within plastic house using Factorial Completely Randomized Design which consisted of liquid waste concentration with 6 levels as well as oil palm plant ages with three replications. The research objective was to determine the respond of oil palm plant at different ages to the addition of liquid waste concentrations from oil palm mill. The plants were planted within drum consisting of soil from tidal swamp land and liquid waste from private oil palm mill in Banyuasin District. Liquid waste characteristics of oil palm mill from anaerobe pond were as follows: BOD = 24,820.2 mg/l, N = 650.2 mg/l, P = 25 mg/l and K = 295.1 mg/l. Data was tested by using statistical method to determine treatments effect and followed by difference test amongst treatments. The results showed that plant age treatments had highly significant effect on plant height, numbers of stem and plant dry mater weight. Treatment of liquid waste doses had highly significant effect on plant height in 5 months after treatment and plant dry matter weight. Interaction between liquid waste doses and plant ages had no significant effect. Treatment of 12 months plant age and liquid waste of oil palm mill at dose of 2,500 mg/l was significantly different from other treatments. Wells, Jared L. "Black box and blue screen: Readerly entrapment and projection in Pale Fire and House of Leaves." Thesis, University of Canterbury. English, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6669.

Full text
Abstract:
In many respects Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 novel Pale Fire and Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves, first published in 2000, are strikingly similar texts. Indeed, Danielewski's novel can profitably be read as a contemporary re-working of Nabokov's archetypal metafictional model. However, where Danielewski constructs his text as an open-work or 'blue screen' onto which the reader is invited to attach any meaning that they see fit, Nabokov quite explicitly constructs his novel as an infernal 'black box' designed to confuse and entrap the reader and enforce his control over the text and its meaning. Nabokov's novel is fundamentally author-directed, while Danielewski's novel is expressly reader-oriented. Reading Pale Fire through the lens of House of Leaves allows for a radical renegotiation of the Nabokovian text. Danielewski's novel, I argue, allows us to recognize the points of instability latent in the unique structure ofNabokov's novel, and thus open up the text beyond Nabokov's attempted closure and thereby pave the way for new, innovative and creative readings.

Moore, Rick. "Representations of Revolution and Revolutionaries in Early Twentieth Century Russian Literature." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18373.

Full text
Abstract:
The representation of Revolution and revolutionaries develops as one of the main themes in Russian literary texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It would not be an overstatement to say that most active writers during this time referred to these themes in their works. These themes developed in consort with the historical and political developments occurring within the country. The literature of the twentieth century led to a culmination in the understanding of this complex topic. This thesis will present an analysis of several types of Revolutionary characters and their concepts of what Revolution is and should be. It will present an overview of Revolution's origin and development as a background of early twentieth century Russian literary works. The close reading of the selected twentieth century works will be discussed within the body of this thesis. In particular we will review Alexander Blok's poem The Twelve, Isaac Babel's collection of stories Red Cavalry, Vladimir Zazubrin's The Chip: A Story about a Chip and About Her, and Boris Savinkov's Pale Horse.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore the idea of the existence of a novel of nonlinearity, through an inspection of the criticism and the comparative analysis of four works considered as belonging to this tradition (The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, by Laurence Sterne; Pale Fire, by Vladimir Nabokov; Life, a User’s Manual (La vie mode d’emploi), by Georges Perec; and House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski). The first chapter postulates the thesis of two traditions in the history of the novel: the tradition of the realist novel, and a tradition distinguished by the use of nonlinear forms. In order to support this thesis, I’ll take into account studies about the reflexive tradition of the novel, about chaos theory as applied to literature, about the margins of the text, about the reading experience, and about intertextuality. On the basis of this examination, the second chapter outlines a definition of the novel of nonlinearity, which includes a repertoire of the literary devices and themes common to this tradition, and a reflection about its perspectives upon the world and human identity. The third chapter is dedicated to the analyses of the texts included in the corpus. The four novels are analyzed for their distinctive features, and also in the aim of verifying the premise of the existence of a novel of nonlinearity. Drawing on numerous examples selected from the novels, these analyses are structured in eight sections: the problem of beginning; intertextuality; the complexity of life narratives; the issues of interruption, procrastination and absence; the approaches to time; the approaches to language; the theme of the game; and the impossibility of an ending

Abstract:
The Douglas Summerland Collection is a fictional "monographically based history"1. In essence this research is concerned with the current debates about history recording, authenticity of the photograph, methods of history construction and how the audience digests new 'knowledge'. The narrative for this body of work is drawn from a small album of maritime photographs discovered in 2004 within the archives of the Port Chalmers Regional Maritime Museum in New Zealand. The album contains vernacular images of life onboard several sailing ships from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the DH Sterling and the William Mitchell. Through investigating the'truth' systems promoted by the photograph within the presentations of histories this research draws a link between the development of colonialism and the perception of photography. It also deliberates on how 'truth' perception is still a major part of an audience's knowledge base. 1. Abstract:
Helma Sanders-Brahms’ film Deutschland, bleiche Mutter is an important contribution to (West) German cinema and to the discourse of Vergangenheitsbewältigung or “the struggle to come to terms with the Nazi past” and arguably the first film of New German Cinema to take as its central plot a German woman’s gendered experiences of the Second World War and its aftermath. In her film, Deutschland, bleiche Mutter, Helma Sanders-Brahms uses a variety of narrative and cinematic techniques to give voice to the frequently neglected history of non-Jewish German women’s war and post-war experiences.

Abstract:
Mobile portals have become a common entry point to the mobile Internet, and take a number of forms. They may be service provider portals, such as Vodafone’s Live! portal (Vodafone, 2006), offering access to both in-house and brokered external services. Alternatively, they may be public pure play sites that provide some kind of managed access to resources using a yellowpages approach. Good examples of this kind of mobile portal are WordDial (WordDial, 2006) and graBBit (Grabbit, 2006), though they have very different approaches to the way that they provide targeted access to resources, with WordDial using a keyword approach and graBBit modeled on more traditional search engines. As well as mobile and pure play operators, mobile portals are also provided by device manufacturers (e.g., Palm (Palm, 2006)), software companies (e.g., MSN (Microsoft, 2006)) existing Web portal providers (e.g., Yahoo (Yahoo, 2006)), mass media companies (e.g., AOL (AOL, 2006)) and transaction providers (m-commerce sites).

Abstract:
This chapter highlights the city jail, where William Crummie took Amelia Norman on the night she attacked Henry Ballard. It describes the city jail as a massive, gloomy, stone structure known popularly as “the Tombs,” which had been encroached upon by city streets and gradually ruined by the waste emitted by tanneries, slaughterhouses, and breweries. It also talks about novelist Ned Buntline, who described the effect that the the Tombs' solemn stone assemblage of steps, columns, palm leaves, and winged, snake-surrounded sphere had on one of his characters. The chapter looks at the Dickensian rhetoric, which was part of the melodramatic nineteenth-century literary and journalistic style that celebrated the titillating horrors of the slum. It cites the Tombs's multiple official names that expressed its various functions, such as City Prison, Halls of Justice, and House of Detention.

Abstract:
A three-finger exoskeleton is designed and controlled to translate and or rotate a slender object held between the fingertips. Each finger exoskeleton comprises of three serially concatenated planar external four-bar linkages, all on one plane, except for the thumb exoskeleton, for which one linkage is out of plane. Linkages are constrained to be on the dorsal side (sagittal plane) of each finger. To design each linkage, when performing coordinated translation and rotation, trajectories of all phalanges of the index and middle fingers and the thumb are obtained through video capture and post-processing that involves coordinate transformation. Optimal kinematic synthesis for each linkage is then performed via the three accuracy point method coupled with a stochastic search algorithm. Post manufacturing, the exoskeleton is mounted on the dorsal side of the hand using Velcro bands. Fastening is accomplished on each phalanx, palm and forearm via a fixture designed to house all three exoskeletons. Nine micro-servo motors are employed for actuation. To perform coordinated translation and rotation tasks, trajectory following is accomplished using open loop position control, incorporating artificial neural network to convert known finger joint angles into the required driving link angles. Based on experimental tests conducted, the exoskeleton is found to be successful in reproducing the requisite finger motions involved in coordinated object manipulation.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents our recent preliminary study on using a novel in-house ultrasonic measurement technique to investigate ex situ the elastic modulus evolution during a photopolymer based additive manufacturing (PAM). Experiment is designed to study the effects of PAM process parameters on the elastic modulus of fabricated samples. A unique lab-built line-focused ultrasonic transducer based on time-resolved defocusing is employed to measure velocities of the surface waves (Rayleigh waves and longitudinal bulk waves) leaking from the samples. The samples’ elastic properties can be calculated from the obtained wave velocities. As a result, changes in elastic modulus with the varying PAM process conditions are successfully detected and quantified by this ex situ ultrasonic technique, revealing important information on both the “need-to” and “how-to” develop an in-situ monitoring and measurement system for part properties during PAM processes. The research outcome will not only enhance understanding about evolution of mechanical properties during PAM, but also offer insightful guidance on a future development based on the reported ex-situ ultrasonic technology towards an in-situ ultrasonic system for in-process measurement and advanced control of PAM.
