Abstract:
In August 1976 the remains of a substantial building were uncovered in the courtyard of the Palais de Justice at Rouen, by the street which has been called at least since 1116 the rue aux Juifs (see plate I). That it was a Jewish building is confirmed by the Hebrew graffiti on its interior walls. It can be dated firmly to the years around 1100 by its scale, style, and workmanship, which are strongly reminiscent of the so-called ‘Norman exchequer’ in the ducal castle at Caen. The quality of its masonry is as good as may be found anywhere in northern Europe at this time. The function of the building is not altogether certain. At 14.14 X 9.46 metres, with at least one storey above the ground floor, it seems too large for a private dwelling, and indeed it is bigger than any known synagogue of this date north of the Alps. Not only the graffiti, but the lions of Judah finely carved at the base of one column, and the dragon from Psalm 91 on another, strongly suggest a religious purpose. The synagogue was on this street, but it is usually thought to have been on the south side, opposite the Palais de Justice site. This has led Norman Golb, the author of a major study of the Jewish community at Rouen, to suggest that the building unveiled in 1976 was a school, which acted as a centre of advanced study, not only for the Jewry of Rouen, but for a much larger region in which educational and scholarly activity is attested throughout the twelfth century by a rich crop of surviving manuscripts and other references, including many from places like Pont-Audemer, Touques, Falaise, Evreux, and Coutances, which were by no means major urban centres at this time.

Abstract:

Through an analysis of a series of inventories located in the historical archiveof the Ducal House of Alburquerque, this essay considers the presence of objects fromthe Spanish American viceroyalties among the belongings of this noble family. Beyondthe predominant taste in the early modern period for the accumulation of exotic objects, their presence here is in large part due to the posts of viceroy of New Spain held bytwo family members in the middle of the 17th century and the beginning of the followingcentury. Their positions caused the circulation of numerous and varied objects, especially for the decoration of their main houses at the court of Madrid, which, according to the sources analyzed here, aimed to reflect the appearance of thesumptuous palaces in New Spain.KEYWORDS: Collecting, New Spain, Duke of Alburquerque, Madrid, Palace

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study is dedicated to the analysis and examination of the history of the ducal palace of Nancy as residence of the Dukes of Lorraine and their family during the modern period. It is essentially based on the examination of the ducal accounts kept in the departmental archives of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Indeed, their progressive growth and extension from the end of the 15th century and throughout the 16th century allows a better undersstanding of the development of the court of Nancy and its functioning. This work, therefore, focuses on a vast period starting in 1477 with the resumption of the Duchy by Renée II, until the abandonment of the site by Stanislas Leszczynski in 1739.Although the conservation state of the remaining buildings of the old residence, now transformed into a museum, makes a complete reconstruction exercise particularly hypothetical, the wealth of accounting data allowed us to propose a global analysis exercise. Rare graphic documents also provide a better understanding of the organization and forms of the ducal residence. We were interested in observing the new construction site at the beginning of the 16th century which participated in the transformation of the old castle into a Renaissance residence marked by new needs and the enrichment of curial operations. From this perspective, this work is dedicated not only to the architecture of the site, but also to aspects associated with it, such as the gardens evolution, the integration of the complex within the urban space of the city of Nancy, or even to the logic of furnishings and acquisitions made by the Dukes of Lorraine. Our attention was also focused on the construction sector in Lorraine, within the ducal capital, through the numerous construction opérations deployed at the ducal palace of Nancy for more than two centuries. We were thus able to take a unique look at the different trades essential to the proper functioning of the palace and the maintenance of its architecture. The regular presence of masons, carpenters, glassmakers, locksmiths, plasterers, « roofers », gardeners and fountain workers makes it possible to identify some unknow craftsmen profils, joining those of architects, painters and sculptors who worked in the service of the Lorraine family to provide an overview of the identities and collaborations on the palace construction sites

Abstract:
During his history, the ducal castle of Moulins has been subject to several destructions and improvements. Despite this, it still contains elements that should be studied carefully in order to restore its original state. From written sources, one knows at least two major buildings campaigns. First one was initiated by the third duke of Bourbon, Louis II, in the late fourteenth century. The remaining main tower, known as “Mal-Coiffée” ("Untidy Top"), has been dated by dendrochronology around 1399/1400. A second campaign of expansion and redevelopment begins after 1488, commissioned by the Duke of Bourbon, Pierre de Beaujeu and his wife Anne de France, Charles VIII’s sister. This expansion will be completed in the early sixteenth century with the construction of a renaissance architecture portico, very early in France. This thesis combines both History and art history, starting from an archaeological reflection of the remaining buildings. The aim of this work is to combine and compare these different approaches in order to obtain the most comprehensive and exhaustive study of this forgotten site which play a key role in History

Abstract:
This investigation of the studioli, small contemplation chambers in the ducal palaces of Urbino and Gubbio, considers their position in the western tradition of the memory arts. Drawing upon select images in the studioli, as well as text sources readily available to Duke Federico da Montefeltro (1422--82) and the members of his court, this inquiry examines how the discipline of architecture equipped the late quattrocento mind with a bridge between the mathematical arts, which lend themselves to mechanical practices, and the art of rhetoric, a discipline central to the cultivation of memory and eloquence. As ramifications of material and mental craft, the studioli offered the Urbino court models for education and prudent governance.

Abstract Most documentation and compositions of city musicians stem from figures working at a variety of ecclesiastical institutions. Four churches with citywide audiences maintained large permanent ensembles, and some twelve others, largely belonging to religious orders, had some kind of musical life, employing at least an organist and some singers. In addition, the governor’s court supported both instrumentalists and vocalists for the ducal palace and its chapel, San Gottardo in Palazzo.

Abstract The challenge of revolution and the recovery of popular politics, 1830–1840 . On the evening of 7 September 1830, the ducal palace in the central German city of Braunschweig burned to the ground. It had been set alight by a large crowd of handicraft workers and members of the city’s ‘lower orders’ who were outraged that the arrogant young Duke Karl II had violated what they regarded as the obligations of a ‘just ruler’ to provide work opportunities and grain subsidies in a time of bitter economic crisis. The unloved duke fled to London; and, the next day, a ‘Civic Guard’ commanded by a banker named Löbbecke sought to contain the violence and ensure the return of stable, sober, but non-despotic and non-arbitrary government.

Studies on the recovery of the decorated surfaces of the architecture of the facades of the Cavallerizza and the Castle of San Giorgio in the Ducal Palace of MantuaThe contribution aims to present the path of knowledge on the external surfaces of the Courtyard of the Cavallerizza and the Castle of San Giorgio in Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, the subject of an upcoming conservation project. In particular, the results emerged through the autopsy and stratigraphic survey of areas selected by sample, relating to the technique of execution and the constituent materials of the finishes. From this survey, the characteristics of the original structure have been defined so as to have a clear relationship with respect to integration or degradation. At the same time, following specific evidence and to support the cognitive operations carried out in situ, in-depth diagnostic investigations were carried out in order to support and clarify the contents detected previously by interpreting the scientific data on the nature of the materials and the degradation present. The re-elaboration and critical analysis of the data acquired through various in-depth techniques, as well as providing indications for intervening on the causes of degradation, has supported the designers in the development of intervention methods and in the choice of the most suitable materials for conservation, based on the state of conservation of the nearby areas and the interfaces with the substrate. The scientific data have been compared with the historiographic information in order to have an objective comparison.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract In the last years, museums have begun to apply new technological solutions to manage their exhibits in a more open, inclusive, and creative way, to improve the visitors’ experience to respond to the need to expand the audience. The main goal is to face the increasing competition in an economy referred to as the “Experience Economy”. To this end, Augmented Reality technology seems to represent a good solution for museum guide systems, to improve visitors’ learning and enjoyment. In this context, the present paper proposes a museum guide system based on Spatial Augmented Reality powered by dynamic projection. The paper describes the overall HW and SW system architecture and reports in detail the developed process adopted to design and implement a museum guide and entertainment application, in the context of the “Studiolo of Federico da Montefeltro” in the Ducal Palace of Urbino. A preliminary survey has been carried out, which involved a total of 79 subjects, aimed at investigating the quality of visitor’s experience, aroused by the proposed application, in terms of the “Four Experience Realms” defined by Pine & Gilmore (1998). Results suggest that the proposed application can be used to stage experiences that satisfy the visitors and may help to enable museums into the Experience Economy.
