Full textPostcards, way of communication of the last century, gained popularity and was items for collectors. Focusing on images of cities, production of postcards was filled with a symbolic power of its forms, its own language that iconic semiology helps us to understand. In this sense, cultural geography, concerned with function and place of culture in production of space, is the conceptual basis of this work, especially the reinterpretation of the concept of landscape which is connected to traditions of German romanticism. Therefore, the object of this study is postcards which represented nature and the city of Rio de Janeiro during the period between 1900 and 1935. This work also intends to interpret and understand symbolic constructions of the image of Rio de Janeiro, from the reading of landscapes of this city which are presented in those postcards. Thus, in the analysis of signs, messages connected to ideas of tropical paradise and modern city were also analyzed. Both are interrelating and contribute to construction of the representation of Cidade Maravilhosa (The Marvelous City).

Full textThis thesis discusses the production of urban space from two aspects, the territory biophysical conditions and the community, with the purpose of searching for alternatives of development which promotes compatibility between the environment and culture. Thus, it defines the principles and concepts on which the ecological urban planning is fundamented, based on MCHARG, Ian L. (2000), HOUGH, Michael (1998), SPIRN, Anne Whiston (1995), SANTOS, Milton (1996 e 1997), PALOMO, Pedro J. Salvador (2003), PELLEGRINO, Paulo R. M. (1995), BENEDICT, Mark A., MCMAHON, Edward T. (2006); it outlines efforts that are distinct from those which have been proposed and that have caused serious environmental and social problems, as well as segregation in the human relations in the cities; it focuses on Goiânia, a planned city, the reading of how the environment, the projects and the people, in their ordinary life, go on composing a new landscape; and it analyzes a determined environment, a unit of conservation called Mendanha Hill, allowing the interpretation of the conflicts and opportunities that may determine alternative values capable of assuring the balance between the urban development and the environmental conservation, because it allows processes of anthropic occupation with the preservation of relevant environmental characteristics, connecting people and places. Eventually, it presents a green infrastructure project applied to the APA of Mendanha Hill as a strategy capable of establishing the retaking of an autochtonous social development and in balance with the biophysical characteristics of the place.

Full textAction plans for nature protection conducted by cultural policies agencies often bring some questions about the typological limits of cultural heritage. Nature can also be considered as a object of cultural protection. The Condephaat, for instance, has several nature areas considered as cultural heritage. This study analyzed how nature became an important element in cultural heritage practices, and how the landscape was considered as a methodology for recognition of nature in the field of cultural policies. Geomorphology was an important reference in the landscape structure in most of the nature heritages, in the State of São Paulo. The relief was considered as symbolic element for cultural protection. The nature heritage areas are territorial spaces with special protection, but these places not are conservation units, in legal sense, that is, a category in national conservation system of nature. Then, it was also studied the process of creation of the different protection nature areas. Initially, these areas were created based on a preservationist discourse. After, they were designed by a conservationist theory that included human occupation in creation of new management categories. Thus, the nature heritage areas in the cultural sphere are consistent with the current theoretical bases. Social participation in defense and for creation of these natural spaces presented conflicts of interest, and was preceded by a deregulation process that did not consider the rich theoretical and methodological contribution of the experience undertaken.

Full textThis research aims to reconstruct the theoretical contemporary debate over the concept of landscape, based on the geographical and anthropological literature produced during the three last decades over the relations between man and environment, culture and nature. The cultural geographys landscape discussion, specially the work of Augustin Berque, is the starting point for an interdisciplinary dialog with Anthropology, which follows the route from the notion to the concept of the landscape, to highlight its own historicity

Full textThis theoretical-practical qualitative research was developed based on several techniques, such as observation, interviews (oral history), and documental analysis. The symbolic interactionism reflects the theoretical approach adopted in valuing the research subjects´ point of view. Categories analyzed were: sustainability, landscape, heritage and community. Its development was defined in the context of cultural landscape and sustainable tourism. The main focus of this thesis was on the representations of the local community of Paranapiacaba, a railway village, in relation to the transformations that have occurred, mainly related to the heritage and the declining influence of railroad activity, and their role in the tourism activity. In a multidisciplinary approach, concepts of several sciences - Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Psychology were used, as well as studies in the tourism and leisure field. As a result, it was found that the local community participates in the activity, however, their participation is, mainly, at the operational level, not at the strategic decision-making level. In theoretical terms, this study suggests approaching the concept of cultural landscape in tourism studies, related to the context of social-environmental sustainability.

Full textThe Funchal Ecological Park (PECOF) was affected in 2010 by two types of natural disasters: heavy rains and forest fires. In PECOF, rains caused landslides on steep slopes, the overflow of streams due to solid materials that were transported by the flow of water, and damaged the banks. On the other hand, the fire, which occurred six months after the rains, consumed 92% of the total area of the Park, destroying unique Macaronesian flora samples. Due to these events, the Park was very exposed to environmental factors and some protected species habitats were damaged. This work presents some measures for the recovery and requalification of this area, using techniques that meet the needs of ecosystems and space, as well as the objectives that led to the foundation of this protected area in 1994. Some of the proposed measures consist in the deployment and recovery of native species in the burned areas and for the stabilization of slopes that have experienced landslides, and upgrading the water lines by cleaning the sea bed and implementing strategies to reduce the flow and speed. It is also foreseen the installation of new infrastructure (fireplaces, tables and benches, toilets) to return this area to the population

Full textThe research addresses the understanding of the relationship between society and nature in the field, through the case study of the Commune Earth \"Irmã Alberta\", established as a rural settlement by the Movement of Landless Rural Workers ( MST ), since 2002, in the district of Perus São Paulo / SP and regularization process by INCRA. We were careful to grasp the influence of the physical environment in determining modes of farm area in question and the impact of agricultural production systems in the dynamic landscape, questioning the practices of families in relation to the management of the physical environment. In this sense, it is understood that there is a production landscape by historical process of appropriation of land and vice versa. The historical reconstruction of the agrarian structure of the region and preparation of thematic maps of the physical subsidized the study of interactions of the pedological and agricultural production systems of the settlement. The characterization of pedological systems occurred from the characterize the impact of human actions on the morphology of the soil using the technique of Cultural Profile. The work also covers the discussion of the limitations of the type of rural settlement of \"Sustainable Development\" proposed by INCRA and respectively the Commune of the Earth, the MST, in promoting well - being and material reproduction of peasant families and achievement of sustainability goals proposed
