Abstract:
Using page rank and semantic information are frequently used techniques in next page prediction systems. In our work, we extend the use of Page Rank algorithm for next page prediction with several navigational attributes, which are size of the page, duration of the page visit and duration of transition (two page visits sequentially), frequency of page and transition. In our model, we define popularity of transitions and pages by using duration information, use it in a relation with page size, and visit frequency factors. By using the popularity value of pages, we bias conventional Page Rank algorithm and model a next page prediction system that produces page recommendations under given top-n value. Moreover, we extract semantic terms from web URLs in order to tag pages semantically. The extracted terms are mapped into web URLs with different level of details in order to find semantically similar pages for next page recommendations. With this tagging, we model another next page prediction method, which uses Semantic Tagging (ST) similarity and exploits PPR values as a supportive method. Moreover, we model a Hybrid Page Rank (HPR) algorithm that uses both Semantic Tagging based approach and Popularity Based Page Rank values of pages together in order to investigate the effect of PPR and ST with equal weights. In addition, we investigate the effect of local (a synopsis of directed web graph) and global (whole directed web graph) modeling on next page prediction accuracy.

Abstract : Web page ranking algorithms can be created using content-based, structure-based or user search-based techniques. This research addresses an user search-based approach applied over previously filtered documents ranking, which relies in a segmentation process to extract irrelevante content from documents before ranking. The process splits the document into three categories of blocks in order to fragment the document and eliminate irrelevante content. The ranking method, called Page Filtered Ranking, has two main steps: (i) irrelevante content extraction; and (ii) document ranking. The focus of the extraction step is to eliminate irrelevante content from the document, by means of the Query-Based Blocks Mining algorithm, creating a tree that is evaluated in the ranking process. During the ranking step, the focus is to calculate the relevance of each document for a given query, using criteria that give importance to specific parts of the document and to the highlighted features of some HTML elements. Our proposal is compared to two baselines: the classic vectorial model, and the CETR noise removal algorithm, and the results demonstrate that our irrelevante content removal algorithm improves the results and our relevance criteria are relevant to the process.

Abstract:
Web pages are becoming more complex than ever, as they are generated by Content Management Systems (CMS). Thus, analyzing them, i.e. automatically identifying and classifying different elements from Web pages, such as main content, menus, among others, becomes difficult. A solution to this issue is provided by Web page segmentation which refers to the process of dividing a Web page into visually and semantically coherent segments called blocks. The quality of a Web page segmenter is measured by its correctness and its genericity, i.e. the variety of Web page types it is able to segment. Our research focuses on enhancing this quality and measuring it in a fair and accurate way. We first propose a conceptual model for segmentation, as well as Block-o-Matic (BoM), our Web page segmenter. We propose an evaluation model that takes the content as well as the geometry of blocks into account in order to measure the correctness of a segmentation algorithm according to a predefined ground truth. The quality of four state of the art algorithms is experimentally tested on four types of pages. Our evaluation framework allows testing any segmenter, i.e. measuring their quality. The results show that BoM presents the best performance among the four segmentation algorithms tested, and also that the performance of segmenters depends on the type of page to segment. We present two applications of BoM. Pagelyzer uses BoM for comparing two Web pages versions and decides if they are similar or not. It is the main contribution of our team to the European project Scape (FP7-IP). We also developed a migration tool of Web pages from HTML4 format to HTML5 format in the context of Web archives

Abstract:
Computer systems play an increasingly crucial and ubiquitous role in human endeavour by carrying out or facilitating tasks and providing information and services. How much work these systems can accomplish, within a certain amount of time, using a certain amount of resources, characterises the systems’ performance, which is a major concern when the systems are planned, designed, implemented, deployed, and evolve. As one of the most popular computer systems, the Web is inevitably scrutinised in terms of performance analysis that deals with its speed, capacity, resource utilisation, and availability. Performance analyses for the Web are normally done from the perspective of the Web servers and the underlying network (the Internet). This research, on the other hand, approaches Web performance analysis from the perspective of Web pages. The performance metric of interest here is response time. Response time is studied as an attribute of Web pages, instead of being considered purely a result of network and server conditions. A framework that consists of measurement, modelling, and monitoring (3Ms) of Web pages that revolves around response time is adopted to support the performance analysis activity. The measurement module enables Web page response time to be measured and is used to support the modelling module, which in turn provides references for the monitoring module. The monitoring module estimates response time. The three modules are used in the software development lifecycle to ensure that developed Web pages deliver at worst satisfactory response time (within a maximum acceptable time), or preferably much better response time, thereby maximising the efficiency of the pages. The framework proposes a systematic way to understand response time as it is related to specific characteristics of Web pages and explains how individual Web page response time can be examined and improved.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the production of the Middle English poetic manuscript. It analyses the mise-en-page of manuscripts created during a crucial period for book production, immediately after 1400, when there was a sudden explosion in the production of vernacular manuscripts of literary texts, when the demand for books increased, and the commercial book trade swiftly followed. It offers a close analysis of the mise-en-page of the manuscripts of three central authors: Chaucer’s, Gower’s, and Hoccleve’s manuscripts were at the heart of this sudden flourishing and were, crucially, produced when scribal methods for creating the literary page were still unformed. Previous studies have focused on the localised readings produced by single scribes, manuscripts, or authors, offering a limited examination of broader trends. This study offers a wider comparison: where individual studies offer localised analysis, the multi-textuality of this thesis offers broader perceptions of book production and of scribal responses to the new literary texts being produced. In analysing the layout of seventy-six manuscripts, including borders, initials, paraphs, rubrics, running titles, speaker markers, glosses and notes, this thesis argues that scribes were deeply concerned with creating a manuscript page specifically to showcase texts of poetry. The introduction outlines current scholarship on mise-en-page and defines the scribe as one who offers an individual response to the text on the page within the context of the inherited, commercial, and practical practices of layout. The three analytical chapters address the placement of the features of mise-en-page in each of the seventy-six manuscripts, each chapter offering three contrasting manuscript situations. Chapter 1 analyses the manuscripts of Chaucer, who left no plan for the look of his page, causing scribes to make decisions on layout that illuminate fifteenth-century scribal responses to literature. These are then compared to the manuscripts of Gower in Chapter 2, directly or indirectly supervised by the poet, which display rigorous uniformity in their layout. This chapter argues that scribes responded in much the same way, despite the strict control over meaning. Chapter 3 focuses on Hoccleve’s autograph manuscripts which are unique in demonstrating authorial control over layout. This chapter compares the autograph to the non-autograph manuscripts to argue that scribal responses differed from authorial intentions. Each of the three chapters analyses the development of mise-en-page specifically for literary texts. Focussing on the mise-en-page, this thesis is able to compare across a range of texts, manuscripts, scribes, and authors to mount a substantial challenge to current perceptions that poetic manuscripts were laid out in order to assist readers’ understanding of the meaning of the texts they contain. Instead, it argues that though there was a concern with representing the nuances of poetic meaning, often scribal responses to poetry were bound up with presenting poetic form.

Abstract:
A search engine needs to continuously revisit web pages in order to keep its local repository up-to-date. A page revisiting schedule must be defined to keep the repository up-to-date using the available resources. In order to avoid web server overload, the revisiting policy must respect a minimum amount of time between consecutive requests to the same server. This rule is called politeness constraint. Due to the large number of web pages, we consider that a revisiting policy is efficient when the mean time to schedule a revisit is sublinear on the number of pages in the repository. Therefore, when the politeness constraint is considered, there are no existing efficient policies with theoretical quality guarantees. We investigate three efficient policies that respect the politeness constraint, called MERGE, RANDOM and DELAYED. We provide approximation factors for the repository’s up-to-date level for the MERGE and RANDOM policies. Based on these approximation factors, we devise a 0.77 lower bound for the approximation factor provided by the RANDOM policy and we present a conjecture that 0.927 is a lower bound for the approximation factor provided by the MERGE policy. We evaluate these policies through simulation experiments which try to keep a repository with 14.5 million web pages up-to-date. Additional experiments based on a repository with Wikipedia’s articles concluded that the MERGE policy provides better results than a natural greedy strategy. The main conclusion of this research is that there are simple and efficient policies that can be applied to this problem, even when the politeness constraint must be respected, resulting in a small loss of repository’s up-to-date level.

Abstract:
Much research has been conducted on the retrieval and classification of web-based information. A big challenge is the performance issue, especially for a classification algorithm returning results for a large set of data that is typical when accessing the Web. This thesis describes a grid-enabled approach for automatic web page classification. The basic approach is first described that uses a vector space model (VSM). An enhancement of the approach through the use of a genetic algorithm (GA) is then described. The enhanced approach can efficiently process candidate web pages from a number of web sites and classify them. A prototype is implemented and empirical studies are conducted. The contributions of this thesis are: 1) Application of grid computing to improve performance of both VSM and GA using VSM based web page classification; 2) Improvement of the VSM classification algorithm by applying GA that uniquely discovers a set of training web pages while also generating a near optimal parameter values set for VSM.

The intention of this thesis is to investigate methods in which deficiencies in construction documents can be addressed through the application of digital technology. These deficiencies take two forms. The first form relates specifically to the limitations of a paper based documentation system with regard to accessing information. This is becoming increasingly prevalent due to the increasing amount of documentation required for complex building projects. The second set of deficiencies is directly related to the time consuming nature of the construction document production process, recognizing that the majority of time is spent reformatting and redrawing previous details and specifications. The concepts of object-oriented programming and levels of abstraction are used as organizational structures to address these deficiencies. While current methods of documentation utilize more traditionally based organizational system, this thesis explored the use of structures inherent to computational media. Additionally, database structures were explored as a key component to information reuse in the documentation process. Two prototype systems are developed to propose alternative methods of documentation using computational media. The Building Interface is an interactive system for information access that utilizes varying densities of information and multiple modes of representation. The Drawing Assembler is a graphic search engine for construction details that links a building component database with a construction detail database through the intersection of dissimilar objects.

Therefore adherence to R&S outsourcing services has been increasing as it provides the customers the specialized knowledge and techniques that they often do not have internally, thus contributing to that competitive advantage. Thereby the report starts with a review of the literature, or theoretic framing, followed by the description of the PG and respective developed activities. To finalize, it is made a comparative analysis between the activities carried out with the literature revision, as well as an appreciation and conclusion of the internship.

Abstract:
This study explored attributes of a Facebook brand page (FBP). Seven variables were derived from the framework and applied to FBPs. The goals of this research were to discover which attributes contribute to a successful FBP, determine which attributes increase purchase intentions, and help marketers determine where to focus their efforts. A total of 421 surveys were gathered from men and women ages 18 and older. The methods of this research included factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results yielded two loading factors for the trustworthiness variable and supported hypotheses of trustworthiness increasing purchase intentions. It was also discovered that participation positively influences purchase intentions. It is advised that information content be monitored to avoid information overload.

Abstract:
Over the last few years, the Web has virtually exploded with an enormous amount of web pages of dierent types of content. With the current size of Web, it has become cumbersome to try and manually index and categorize all of its content. Evidently, there is a need for automatic web page categorization. This study explores the use of automatic text classication methods for categorization of web pages. The results in this paper is shown to be comparable to results in other papers on automatic web page categorization, however not as good as results on pure text classication.

Abstract:
The abstraction provided by virtual memory is central to the operation of modern operating systems. Making the most efficient use of the available translation hardware is critical to achieving high performance. The multiple page-size support provided by almost all architectures promises considerable benefits but poses a number of implementation challenges. This thesis presents a minimally-invasive approach to transparent multiple page-size support for Itanium Linux. In particular, it examines the interaction between supporting large pages and Itanium's two inbuilt hardware page-table walkers; one being a virtual linear page-table with limited support for storing different page-size translations and the other a more flexible but higher overhead hash table based translation cache. Compared to a single-page-size kernel, a range of benchmarks show performance improvements when multiple page-sizes are available, generally large working sets that stress the TLB. However, other benchmarks are negatively impacted. Analysis shows that the increased TLB coverage, resulting from the use of large pages, frequently does not reduce TLB miss rates sufficiently to make up for the increased cost of TLB reloads. These results, which are specific to the Itanium architecture, suggest that large-page support for Itanium Linux is best enabled selectively with insight into application behaviour.

Amilcar de Castro and the Neoconcrete Page deals with the sculptor's graphic design project for the news daily Jornal do Brasil, and especially for the Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil (the paper's Sunday supplement) during the late 1950s. Above all else, the supplement's layout reflected visual experimentation beyond any mere concern with functionality or the idealized tranformtion of everyday life by art. Insofar as it touches upon the indissociation between intelligibility and sensibility, it contains a number of commonalities with neoconcretist thought and the phenomenology of Merleau- Ponty. During the period in question, the supplement's graphic design project changed continuously, blending concepts and execution within its ongoing creative process. The visuality of the graphic sign was intensely explored in its pages, strengthening the newsaper's relationship with the concretist and neconcretist poetry published by the supplement. Similarly, many of the problems explored by Amilcar de Castro in his sculptures and drawings were also dealt with by the artist in the newspaper's layout as one of the mediums according to which he forged his poetics. To this end, we shall highlight associations between thought and production as results of the sensitivity of the gaze; the artist's minimalist use of elements that focus on inter-relationship; and the experimental use of space and time as indissociable dimensions experienced and based on motion and operationality.

This work presents the first study of a new protocol, QUIC, on Web page performance. Our experiments test the HTTP/1.1, SPDY, and QUIC multiplexing protocols on the Alexa U.S. Top 500 websites, across 100+ network configurations of bandwidth and round-trip time (both static links and cellular networks). To do so, we design and implement QuicShell, a tool for measuring QUIC's Web page performance accurately and reproducibly. Using QuicShell, we evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of QUIC. Due to its design of stream multiplexing over UDP, QUIC outperforms its predecessors over low-bandwidth links and high-delay links by 10 - 60%. It also helps Web pages with small objects and HTTPS-enabled Web pages. To improve QUIC's performance on cellular networks, we implement the Sprout-EWMA congestion control protocol and find that it improves QUIC's performance by > 10% on high-delay links.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis formulates a practice-based approach to performances of breathlessness on the page. It investigates breathlessness as a subject of creative practice through performance writing, creating different works that function as material object, site as well as score for future performance permutations. These works each examine different aspects of breathlessness, with a focus on the corporeal, affect and between-ness. The relationship of these performance works to the body, affect, time and duration establish the performative possibilities of writing and how this specific form of artistic practice contributes to discourse surrounding live work. My research does not distinguish between the contributions of practice and critical analysis. The outcome of the research is three works, one of which is embedded within this document, and a critical analysis that explores the different ways breathlessness performs on the page. Key to my research is a negotiation of understandings of lessness. Breathless performance writing posits a concept of lessness as other than absence. The ability of the practice-based work to initiate experiences that engage with the body, time and duration also demonstrate forms through which writing can generate as well as directly participate in performance. This research contributes to the field of contemporary performance and theatre practice by defining the live in relation to writing as well as developing a concept of lessness. The distinction between writing and performance leads to unnecessary schisms between the two disciplines. This body of research demonstrates the ways in which performance writing bridges these disciplines to initiate live work. This research disrupts conventional and binary definitions of breathlessness, performance and writing. Performance writing initiates live experiences for audiences of one or many, unbound to any one point in time, capable of generating multiple but unique live encounters with performance.

Abstract:
Despite decades of research, offline handwriting recognition (HWR) of historical documents remains a challenging problem, which if solved could greatly improve the searchability of online cultural heritage archives. Historical documents are plagued with noise, degradation, ink bleed-through, overlapping strokes, variation in slope and slant of the writing, and inconsistent layouts. Often the documents in a collection have been written by thousands of authors, all of whom have significantly different writing styles. In order to better capture the variations in writing styles we introduce a novel data augmentation technique. This methods achieves state-of-the-art results on modern datasets written in English and French and a historical dataset written in German.HWR models are often limited by the accuracy of the preceding steps of text detection and segmentation.Motivated by this, we present a deep learning model that jointly learns text detection, segmentation, and recognition using mostly images without detection or segmentation annotations. Our Start, Follow, Read (SFR) model is composed of a Region Proposal Network to find the start position of handwriting lines, a novel line follower network that incrementally follows and preprocesses lines of (perhaps curved) handwriting into dewarped images, and a CNN-LSTM network to read the characters. SFR exceeds the performance of the winner of the ICDAR2017 handwriting recognition competition, even when not using the provided competition region annotations.

Abstract:
The neonatal diarrhea constitute one of the most important economic and health factors in pig farms either by death or by the aggregate losses to the delay in the development of piglets, prophylaxis and management. Rotaviruses have a prominent role by the rapid spread within the herd, as well as the zoonotic potential, given the likelihood of genetic reassortment or recombination between human and animal samples. The objective of this study was to detect the presence of rotavirus from fecal samples from 277 piglets with clinical cases of diarrhea, from the states of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Santa Catarina (SC), Paraná (PR), Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Mato Grosso (MT), São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) e Minas Gerais (MG) between the years 2009 and 2011 and to analyze the electrophoretic migration of genomic segments and electropherotype differences in positive samples, by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) technique. From 277 piglets diarrheal stool samples analyzed, 25 were positive (25/277 = 9%). In accordance with the States of origin, were observed frequencies of 20% (1/5) in the RS, 11.1% (1/9) in SC, 12.5% (1/8) in PR, 15.3 % (6/39) in MS, 14.2% (3/21) in MT, 6.7% (5/74) in SP, 0% (0/7) in Rio de Janeiro and 7% (8/114) in MG. For the analysis of the electrophoretic migration of genome segments, all 25 positive samples showed electrophoretic profile compatible with the RV-A as a standard sample NCDV, showing characteristic fourth class or aggregates [4-2-3-2]. We observed small differences in the migration speed of one or more segments within the same class. These results highlight the importance of PAGE as a method of diagnosis and epidemiological investigations in the porcine rotavirus.

Abstract:
A significant fraction of today's Internet traffic is associated with popular web sites such as YouTube, Netflix or Facebook. In recent years, major Internet websites have become more complex as they incorporate a larger number and more diverse types of objects (e.g. video, audio, code) along with more elaborate ways from multiple servers. These not only affect the loading time of pages but also determine the pattern of resulting traffic on the Internet. In this thesis, we characterize the complexity of major Internet websites through large-scale measurement and analysis. We identify thousands of the most popular Internet websites from multiple locations and characterize their complexities. We examine the effect of the relative popularity ranking and business type of the complexity of websites. Finally we compare and contrast our results with a similar study conducted 4 years earlier and report on the observed changes in different aspects.

Abstract:
This degree project is a scientific study where the focus is to formulate a method of how to compare Single-Page Application (SPA) frameworks written in JavaScript. To solve the problem, an abstraction of SPA frameworks is required. This abstraction is completed using a criteria-based approach. Criteria are collected from literature and interviews with experienced developers. Every criterion is defined and has a set of questions evaluating it. In addition to the abstraction concepts are extracted from other comparative methods, such as performance testing and code comparison. The method is evolved into two separate parts, a theoretical and a practical. Finally, the method is tested on three different frameworks, AngularJS, Angular 2 and React, by implementing a prototype for each framework. From this prototype, code comparison and performance tests are conducted and evaluated. According to the method, AngularJS is suggested to be the best choice. However, the majority of the results from the theoretical part were more or less identical whereas practical part showed more differences. For future reference, this method could be evaluated to other comparative methods or be extended with more criteria and questions.

Abstract:
The number of Internet users keeps growing every year. Moreover, the Internet is becoming a daily tool, which impacts the individual's lives used either as a work tool or for entertainment purposes. However, by using it, people become possible targets for cyber attacks as they keep exchanging data, sometimes sensitive and private data, with remote servers.Among all the different attacks types, MitB is the reason behind the genesis of this thesis subject. MitB attacks are performed by a computer program running on user's computer that is commonly known as Malware, which has access to what happens inside a browser window. It can be a system library or even a browser extension programmed to, automatically, misrepresent the source code of the client-side server response, and other information stored in user's browsers. They rely on markup and DOM anchors to identify sections of a web page to attack. The end result of an attack will be dictated by the malware's ability to successfully identify the right location on the web page to perform the attack.Polymorphism is a broad concept that can be applied to web pages as a tool to both neutralize and defeat such kind of attacks, as documented by Shape Security, Inc. in 2014. Applying polymorphic techniques to web pages, the server response will be textually different between requests, but the visual display to the user will always be the same. That is, the values of static attributes and the structure of HTML documents may be modified on the server immediately before responses are sent off, creating a polymorphic version of the web page, or by pre-building this new versions on the server to decrease the real time computational costs. Therefore, no two HTML documents will be textually the same, turning web pages in somehow a moving target against MitB attacks. This level of protection is necessary since all changes are made locally, client side, making their detection difficult by control and security structures implemented on the service provider's servers. In this thesis, we aim to develop a tool based on polymorphism to protect web pages and users from MitB attacks based on markup and DOM anchors. This tool will be evaluated by accuracy and efficiency. The first metric will be evaluated by recording and comparing the list of errors and warnings generated by original web pages and by their polymorphic versions created with our tool. The efficiency will be evaluated by running automated attempts for tampering web pages protected by our tool.

With the development of Internet technology in recent years, the websites have become the integral part of life. Along with advances in the browser technology, the websites have better supportability and compatibility. Web Programs development has transferred from the server side to the client side computing. Traditional Web Service, AJAX, Web 2.0, REST and other development technologies have grown into the Single- page Application (SPAs). By using AJAX technology, most of the server-site computing can be done at the client side (i.e., the browser). Users can operate on a single-page web application like using a desktop application, for example, Google's Gmail and Facebook. In addition to reducing the server load, Single-page application can increase the users’ experience. With the maturity of HTML5 technical specification, each browser has gradually gained update support. HTML5 has increased lots of useful grammatical feature and elements, developers easily to embed multimedia and graphics components. The Document Object Model (DOM) and Application Programming Interface (API) also become the basis of HTML. In our study, we use the WebSocket API defined in HTML5 specification to perform full-duplex communication between the browser and the server. This study will explore how to enhance the initial loading speed for single-page applications, conduct a series of experiments to simulate the operation of an e- commerce website, and compare the initial page loading time for conventional website and single-page application using Ajax. The study will use the HTML5 WebSocket API to explore how to improve the initial delay caused by using traditional technology, and compare the performance of the web-socket approach and the Ajax approach, and then evaluate some other technical issues. We expect that this study can provide users better interactivity and experience.
