NORA is a very young field of anesthesia practice. The idea of a text concerning NORA would have seemed unlikely as recently as five years ago, so prognosticating about the future of NORA has potential pitfalls. Most particularly, the pace of change in medical practice can be very rapid, especially if a disruptive or innovative technology is introduced. None-the-less, certain predications can be made based on the rapid evolution of NORA. It will be interesting to look back in thirty years and to see what percentage of these predications prove to be accurate. This chapter discusses and predicts the future of NORA, its expected growth, and how facilities and practices will need to evolve to accommodate it.

En parte por limitar el mito a su realidad concreta, y en parte porque, como escribió Pasolini, «la lettura di Campana si trasforma in uno spettro di Campana stesso», el autor lleva a cabo una cuidadosa biografía basada en los documentos; estableciendo las relaciones que mantuvo con los otros escritores de su época y, sobre todo, haciendo un estudio sobre la «leyenda Campana», pues, a pesar de lo mucho que se ha hablado, no existe hasta la fecha ningún estudio sistemático sobre los elementos que la componen. Para lograr dicho objetivo, el autor tiene en cuenta que en Campana se ha desarrollado un proceso inverso al de la mayoría de los poetas: más que intentar comprender su poesía a través de su experiencia biográfica, se ha pretendido llenar las lagunas existentes en su vida con textos de su obra. Esto es peligroso en tanto en cuanto se olvida que la poesía es obra de creación y, como tal, debe su existencia tanto a la experiencia personal del autor como a su imaginación, su creatividad, su particular forma de ver la vida, sus esperanzas; no en vano tituló su obra Canti Orfici, orfismo, mundo de sueño e imaginario, etéreo.

No Sudoeste do Estado de Goiás, na cidade de Mineiros, encontra-se uma pequena comunidade fundada no século XIX, bem antes da Abolição, pelo escravo alforriado Francisco Antônio de Moraes, conhecido como Chico Moleque. Na Comunidade Quilombola do Cedro, separada da cidade apenas por uma rua, vivem, atualmente, 237 descendentes de seu fundador. Desde a época da criação do quilombo até os dias de hoje algumas coisas mudaram, porém parte de sua cultura, tradições, valores e saberes têm sido mantidos ao longo desses anos. A maioria dos cedrinos mantêm suas famílias dedicando-se à agricultura de subsistência. A horta no quintal, umas poucas cabeças de gado, galinhas e porcos garantem sua independência alimentar. Todavia, não pensem que essa forma de viver significa pobreza, pois no Cedro há uma riqueza inestimável de conhecimentos repassados geração após geração e também de histórias que permeiam o imaginário coletivo. Parte desse patrimônio imaterial é o conhecimento centenário sobre as plantas medicinais do bioma Cerrado, saber iniciado por Chico Moleque, que foi sendo preservado e aprimorado e, atualmente, tem o reconhecimento da comunidade científica nacional. Esta obra é parte dos resultados de uma pesquisa de caráter etnográfico e etnobotânico financiada pelo Conselho Nacional de Desempenho Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq, realizada por servidores do Instituto Federal Goiano de 2016 a 2018 no quilombo do Cedro, localizado em Mineiros, no estado de Goiás. Dela também resultaram outras quatro publicações para uso escolar: Um Girassol para Tiana, escrito por Tatianne Silva Santos e Mara Núbia Dionísio; Lembranças Cedrinas: uma experiência de contação de histórias bilíngue, organizado por Priscila Rodrigues do Nascimento, Joana Dark Leite, Maurício Fernando Schneider Kirst, Tânia Regina Vieiraa; How Ways Leads on to Prefácio Way: narrative in an interactive process, de autoria de Maria Luiza Batista Bretas e Vera Maria Tietzmann; e Plantas Medicinais - manipulação e uso na Comunidade Quilombola do Cedro, organizado por Kennedy Araújo Barbosa. The purpose of this chapter is to define the general principles of law as they have been applied in national courts and international tribunals. For instance, the very concept of the law requires good faith adherence to contractual obligations (pacta sunt servanda) and the good faith exercise of legal rights. States as well as private parties are also precluded from contradicting their actions (estoppel) or abusing their rights, thereby defeating the legitimate expectations of another. Nor may they benefit from their own wrong or be unjustly enriched at another’s expense. All parties are liable for acts caused by and attributable to them, and the concept of responsibility requires that the consequences of their wrongful act be wiped out. In their various iterations and permutations, these exemplary principles are the logical consequences of the rule of law and the foundation of every legal order.

As historias que aquí xuntamos son as nove gañadoras, tan só unha pequenísima parte das preto de 1.600 presentadas nesta ocasión. Son máis do dobre que na anterior, e son todas elas, seguramente, concibidas no medio dunha pandemia para a que comezamos a ver a fin. Saímos do túnel. Não é um tratamento completo do título aristotélico, mas as suas nove disputas formam um breve compêndio no qual é possível ver a relevância da Summa theologiae de Tomás de Aquino. Tal como aconteceu com os outros títulos de Coimbra, a Ethica espalhou-se rapidamente pelas Universidades e Colégios europeus, e chegou aos territórios sul-americanos e à China. O presente volume, o segundo volume da série que o IUC está actualmente a publicar, introduz o texto de Coimbra e fornece uma edição moderna do latim original com uma tradução portuguesa.

Scripts is a suite of four concert pieces that can work as a collection of short compositions in their own right or be played amongst other pieces in programmes of extreme and physically taxing music. At the heart of the piece is a real-time sound processing tool that applies sampling and DSP to each instrument individually and in highly varied ways. This tool responds to sound very directly; incoming audio pushes through a landscape of shifting parameters that reconfigure themselves with each note played. As such, the piece is very responsive. All sound spatialisation is ambisonic and can therefore be adapted to any sound system from headphones (for individual rehearsal) up to 16 channels. Scores for the pieces are very simply structured with minimal detail pertaining to what exactly should be played. The scores give scope for the players to adapt their performance to the context of the concert. It is this openness to adaptation that gives the piece its name. Players are asked to interpret their instructions and adjust their playing to the sonic context created by the computer processing, rather like the way actors use a script as the starting point for a performance (Cook, 2014). This means that a very deliberate and carefully formed concept for a piece can exhibit different qualities, colours and player response each time it is performed. The examples submitted show three Scripts alternating between parts of Michael Edwards’s piece for saxophone quartet called Hyperboles 3. Edwards’ piece is long and slow, and Parker identified moments in the piece where the Scripts could be used to change pace, position and concentration. They were configured to work seamlessly between parts of Edwards’s work, yet are distinctly different in approach and concept.

The terms of debate on the role of institutions in economic development are changing. Stable market institutions, in particular secure private property rights and democratically accountable governments that uphold the rule of law, are widely seen to be a prerequisite for economic transformation in low-income countries. Yet over the last thirty years, economic growth and structural transformation has surged forward in a range of countries where market and state institutions have differed from these ideals, as well as from each other. This book studies the role of the state in economic transformation in two such countries, Tanzania and Vietnam. These were two of the poorest countries in the world in the early 1980s but, over the last thirty years, both have experienced significant changes in the pace and character of economic development. While both countries experienced faster rates of GDP growth, their paths of economic transformation were very different. Vietnam experienced rapid manufacturing growth and poverty reduction while Tanzania’s path of economic change was characterized by the rise of mining and a much slower pace of poverty reduction. Employing a political settlements approach, this book argues that their paths of economic transformation were mediated by the lasting influence of differences in the institutions and distributions of power that had been forged during the socialist period. The comparison generates new insights into the variable relationship between political order and economic outcomes.

This book provides a detailed account of the gilets jaunes, the yellow vest movement that has shaken France since 2018. The gilets jaunes are a group of French protesters named after their iconic yellow vests worn during their demonstrations, who have formed a new type of social movement. They have been variously interpreted since they began their occupation of French roundabouts: at first received with enthusiasm on the right of the French political establishment, and with caution on the left. They have provided a fundamental challenge to the social contract in France, the implicit pact between the governed and their political leaders. The book assesses what lessons can be drawn from their activities and the impact for the contemporary relationship between state and citizen. Informed by a dialogue with past political theorists — from Hobbes, Spinoza and Rousseau to Rawls, Nozick and Diderot — and reflecting on the challenges posed by the yellow vest movement, the book rethinks the concept of the social contract for contemporary societies around the world. It proposes a new relationship between the state and the individual, and establishes the necessity of rethinking the modern democratic nature of our representative polities in order to provide a genuine process for the healing of social ills.

Minha primeira tese nesse livro é que Freud parte da concepção de verdade enquanto verificação e posteriormente vai desenvolvendo outras possibilidades de se pensar a verdade, sem que essas concepções se excluam ou se anulem. A questão da fantasia é fundamental nesse processo de pensamento. Acrescenta-se a isso que a fantasia envolve também o problema da memória. Afinal, o que estamos ouvindo quando alguém conta sobre sua vida? Uma estória que pode ser confirmada? Uma verdade? – algo que corresponde com o que “realmente” aconteceu? Ver-se-á que Freud irá propor, diante da impossibilidade de afirmarmos uma suposta confirmação com a realidade, que há uma realidade psíquica. Estamos diante de uma construção psíquica em que a pessoa nos conta algo que é uma realidade para ela, mesmo que não tenha nenhuma conexão ao que supostamente aconteceu. O livro pretende desdobrar a concepção de fantasia na obra de Freud.

Llama la atención que, desde hace algunos años a esta parte, algunas prioridades de las políticas de prevención y atención sanitaria han variado y se han reorientado hacia riesgos que se caracterizan por dos aspectos: tienen que ver con “estilos de vida” (la obesidad y el consumo de tabaco y alcohol, por ejemplo) y con cardiopatías. Parafraseando en clave irónica un conocido pensador, pareciera que esta civilización sin corazón, afecta especialmente a los corazones de las personas.

In this article, the author reflects on the importance of translation and ethics in psychiatry based on his personal experience as a patient suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, alcoholism, and cancer. He talks about his sessions with psychiatrists he has met—what he terms their “human translating.” More specifically, he emphasizes the translation activities between patients and psychiatrists that matter to him, mainly because they are not only fraught with ethical dangers but also present an opportunity for both patient and psychiatrist to excel. The author recalls his exchange with a psychiatrist and how they translated each other’s words very well, and how their session illustrates many ethical qualities for which the doctor should be proud. Finally, he lists the qualities that he deems important and useful and accessible today as they were in 1990, including respect for the patient’s intellect and pace of thinking, appreciation for the patient’s pain, and absence of intellectual competition with the patient.

This book is a highly practical guide to efficiently address cases of youth with school attendance problems at different levels of severity and complexity. School attendance problems are a pervasive and difficult dilemma faced by many types of mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists), school officials (e.g., administrators, guidance counselors, school-based social workers, school psychologists), and others (e.g., pediatricians, probation officers). School attendance problems, even in mild forms, are a significant risk factor for social, behavioral, and academic problems in middle childhood and adolescence as well as psychiatric, economic, and occupational difficulties in adulthood. This book takes a “nuts and bolts” approach that provides very specific and detailed recommendations and guidelines for assessment and intervention across a short period of time (e.g., four weeks). The book focuses less on descriptions of overall programs for absenteeism and more on specific procedures for many different types of cases. Many mental health and school-based professionals cannot logistically implement large-scale programs or even detailed manualized treatment protocols for their clients and schools. Thus, this book is meant to be a very practical guide to address school absenteeism at a relatively fast pace, and within the constraints of most private practices and school settings, while relying on empirically supported techniques. The book also considers developmental levels, with some chapters more applicable to elementary school children and others more suited to middle and high school adolescents.

The global loss of biodiversity is occurring at an unprecedented pace. Despite the considerable effort devoted to conservation science and management, we still lack the basic data on the distribution and density of most animal and plant species, which in turn hampers our efforts to study changes over time. In addition, we often lack behavioural data from the very animals most influenced by environmental changes; this is largely due to the financial and logistical limitations associated with gathering scientific data on animals that are either widely distributed, cryptic, or negatively influenced by human presence. To overcome these limitations, conservationists are increasingly employing technology to facilitate such data collection. The use of camera traps, acoustic sensors, satellite data, drones, and sophisticated computer algorithms to analyse the large data sets collected are becoming increasingly common. Although there are several specialist books on some of these technologies, there is currently no overarching volume that describes the available technology for conservation and evaluates its varied applications. This edited volume will fill this void, bringing together a team of international experts using a diverse range of approaches.

El presente volumen <i>Del órgano al artefacto. Acerca de la dimensión biocultural de la técnica</i>, de Diego Parente, aborda una temática todavía novedosa en nuestro medio. Se trata del resultado de una cuidadosa investigación doctoral realizada en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, trabajo que por su naturaleza representa un valioso aporte, tanto a la reflexión filosófica como a los posibles cruces interdisciplinarios. El autor parte de una firme intuición pragmatista ligada a una concepción de la filosofía según la cual esta evolucionaría de acuerdo a dos series. Una, la más visible para los filósofos involucrados en la tarea, tiene que ver con factores internos de desenvolvimiento, la búsqueda de sistematicidad, alcance, coherencia, etc. La otra, que se hace visible principalmente en los momentos de crisis, da cuenta del desacompasamiento relativo por el cual los marcos conceptuales o «vocabularios » filosóficos se revelan más o menos adecuados para enfrentar las transformaciones ocurridas en la serie de lo socio-histórico. Con esta intuición rectora, de la que hay que decir que tal vez en ninguna parte resulte más plausible que en relación al dominio de la técnica y la tecnología, el autor examina las concepciones dominantes en el campo disciplinar de la filosofía de la tecnología: las concepciones protésica, instrumentalista y sustantiva. Frente a ellas, Parente encuentra que están en crisis no por cuestiones relativas a su coherencia interna, sino por su compromiso con una serie de supuestos (acerca de la técnica como instrumento moralmente neutro, heterónomo y por ello a disposición del usuario) que han sido puestos en cuestión en la actualidad por el desarrollo mismo de la realidad tecnológica. De cara a las limitaciones y a los aportes de las perspectivas analizadas, el autor se propone examinar la viabilidad de una interpretación biocultural de la tecnología.

Dal 1865 in avanti, e limitandosi ai soli aspetti macroscopici, era mutata, anche in profili essenziali, la disciplina del processo di cognizione, il legislatore era intervenuto sul regime delle preclusioni e sul giudizio di appello, aveva introdotto il rito laburistico, modificato la disciplina dell’arbitrato, escogitato provvedimenti anticipatori per far fronte alla crisi determinata dai tempi lunghi della giustizia; sì, a dire il vero era intervenuto anche in materia di tutela cautelare, introducendo il rito uniforme, ma la strumentalità e la provvisorietà non erano state sfiorate. Per questa ragione, la primissima lettura del d.lgs. n. 5 del 2003 in tema di processo societario, nella parte in cui si occupa in specie di provvedimenti cautelari, particolarmente ante causam, mi fece riflettere. Non si poteva non riconoscere che il cambiamento era significativo, forse epocale, che lo sganciamento" o "allentamento" o l’"attenuazione" del nesso di strumentalità cautelare, che fa il suo ingresso nel nostro ordinamento proprio attraverso quel decreto, era una novità significativa, che scalfiva una piccola certezza e meritava un approfondimento. L’esigenza di una riflessione, poi, è stata evidentemente accresciuta dagli ulteriori cambiamenti attuati dal d. l. n. 35 del 14 marzo 2005, convertito con modifiche dalla l. n. 80 del 14 maggio 2005".

A survey of the literature on trade has revealed that it is becoming more difficult for elected officials resist protectionist pressures by citing constraints imposed by global pacts and supply free trade. There are two main reasons why. First, the literature on the design and politics of international institutions increasingly emphasizes how they build in slack that can undermine government claims of being constrained. Second, as states accede to an ever-growing list of overlapping international institutions, there is often a choice among, or uncertainty over, which institution’s obligations apply. Where this situation creates more policy space for government officials, it also will make it more difficult for them to credibly tie their hands and supply free trade in the face of interest group pressures for protection. Currently, the literature is somewhat at a turning point. Questions about the design and politics of international institutions, and the growing thickness of the market for them, are very much in vogue. These questions have profound implications for the supply of free trade. The credibility of elected officials’ hands-tying strategies is likely undermined where institutions anticipate the political reactions of their members, or where members can shop for different rules on trade to accommodate domestic preferences. The irony is that the proliferation of international institutions may lead scholars of trade policy to renew their focus on domestic interest groups.

Durante el acto creativo estamos dando vida a algo nuevo como culminación de un proceso que se alimenta de varias vertientes, objetivas y subjetivas, conscientes e inconscientes, materiales y espirituales, que comprometen al ser en su integridad; es el resultado de un contrapunto entre nuestra existencia y nuestra insistencia que nos eleva, armonizado finalmente en la obra concluida; es el momento tan esperado de ver el rostro de la felicidad. En este trabajo deseo mostrar, también, aspectos de la Función Freno, uno de los integrantes del acto creativo, cuya importancia parece no haber sido percibida por los investigadores; por consiguiente, está poco estudiada o, si se quiere, examinada en forma fragmentaria en las diferentes disciplinas del saber, abrazando contemporáneamente, a la naturaleza y al hombre; éste, analizado a través de la historia y la antropología, muestra ser una persona que piensa y crea; así, podemos hablar de su crecimiento como persona y por las obras que realiza en lo social, en lo tecnológico o científico. Su premisa es crecer. La naturaleza, por su parte, hace sus aportes al crecimiento con una lógica que el hombre trata de entender y, a veces, no lo logra. Identificamos así a los dos creadores fundamentales: el hombre y la naturaleza.

En la década de los noventa, el estudio de la historia del hecho religioso en Colombia comenzó a explorar escenarios diferentes al catolicismo debido a varios factores. El primero afectó a todas las ciencias sociales en Occidente: la crisis de los grandes paradigmas ejemplificados en el final del socialismo real, la disolución de la URSS y la caída del Muro de Berlín. El segundo, vinculado con el anterior, fue la crisis del discurso excesivamente racionalista e ilustrado que pronosticaba, desde la década de los sesenta, la debacle de la religión. Por el contrario, lo que se vivió fue el reverdecimiento de las creencias, entre ellas las religiosas. El tercero tiene que ver con la explosión temática de la historia en Colombia, es decir, con la manera como diversos temas, entre ellos el hecho religioso, pasaron a ser objeto de investigación por parte de historiadores profesionales. El cuarto se relaciona con la Constitución Política de 1991, en la que quedó plasmada la libertad religiosa, que derivó en el reconocimiento y aumento de credos diferentes al católico en la cotidianidad. Treinta años después es notorio el auge de la historia en Colombia, por las múltiples temáticas que han surgido y se han consolidado. Ejemplo de ello es este libro que trata sobre las diversas historias del hecho religioso en el país.
