Aims and methodThis audit examines the quality of ‘as required’ (p.r.n.) prescribing for in-patients before and after standard setting.ResultsThere were improvements in writing oral/intramuscular prescriptions and in the use of different drugs regularly and p.r.n. There was a trend for improvement in completion of guidelines for those on high doses but completion was not influenced by hidden p.r.n. prescribing. Writing p.r.n. prescriptions as a ranged dose was common and did not improve significantly.Clinical implicationsBy using some simple measures, improvements in some aspects of potentially problematic p.r.n. medication can be achieved.

Abstract:
Aims and methodThe Royal College of Psychiatrists' Consensus Statement on “The use of high-dose antipsychotic medication’ suggests only fully qualified psychiatrists (MRCPsych) should recommend the prescribing of high-dose antipsychotic treatment. We observed changes in anti-psychotic prescribing in two surveys of psychiatric in-patients conducted eight and 32 months after publication of the Consensus Statement.ResultsOverall mean chlorpromazine equivalent doses of antipsychotic drugs reduced between the surveys. When p.r.n. (as required) prescribing (usually done by junior doctors) is included, mean potential doses and numbers of patients who might receive ‘high-doses' increases substantially, although the reduction between surveys in total mean dose and proportion of patients on high-dose antipsychotic medication is preserved, and the actual use of p.r.n. medication was low (4–5% of p.r.n. prescriptions).Clinical implicationsWe recommend the development of local guidelines for junior staff concerning antipsychotic drug prescribing, regular monitoring of p.r.n. medication by consultants, and pharmacists' involvement in reviews of patients prescribed high-dose antipsychotic medication.

Abstract:
Trillions of dollars were evaporated worldwide as a result of the financial tsunami that shocked the world in 2007 (Soros, 2008). This paper argues that in a time of global recession, banks seeking to expand wealth management service in the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) need to evaluate their entry strategies thoroughly to gain a competitive edge. Through applying the theory of planned behavior, a sequential mixed methods study was conducted post recession with the aim to identify wealth management service entry strategies into the P.R.C. A sample of 227 Taiwanese nationals based in the P.R.C. indicated three managerial implications consisting of the bank entry identity, deployment of expatriates, and brand-image position.

Within the setting of a regional secure unit, all doses of medication given p.r.n. over three months were ascertained and the details of each administration determined from prescription charts and a semistructured interview with the nursing staff involved. Thirty-two patients were resident for all or part of the study, all compulsorily detained. Only 15 were given medication p.r.n.) compared with the other patients they were significantly younger and more likely to be detained under civil orders than under the criminal provisions of the Mental Health Act 1983. Rarely was the medication the sole intervention in a crisis. In terms of effects on the overall treatment programme of the patient, medication given p.r.n. seemed to have an impact in only one small subgroup.

SILVA, P.R.A.; DIAS, P.P.; CORREIA, T.P.S; SOUSA, S.F.G.EMERGENCE OF CORN SEEDLINGS IN DIFFERENT DEPTHS OF SOWING 2 ABSTRACT Proper planting is one of the factors which most influence crop yield, and the depth of seed deposition is of utmost importance. Variation in sowing depth provide the seeds with different contents of water in the soil for germination and seedling survival. Based on these considerations, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sowing depth on emergence of corn seedlings. The experiment was carried out at Lageado Experimental Farm in the College of Agricultural Sciences - UNESP/Botucatu-SP, using ten treatments and four replicates in a completely randomized experimental design. Sowing depths ranged from 2 to 8 cm. Corn was sown manually and evaluations of seedling emergence were performed from the 5th to the 13th day after sowing. The results showed that sowing between 6 and 8 cm deep led to higher speed of emergence and total emergence of plants, which were favored by higher levels of soil water. Keywords: speed of emergence, seedling emergence, plantability.

Abstract:

Weber, Kaylin Haverstock. "The studio and collection of the 'American Raphael', Benjamin West, P.R.A. (1738-1820)." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4307/.

Full text
Abstract:
When the history painter Benjamin West (1738-1820) died in March 1820, he left behind a remarkable monument to his life and work in his residence at 14 Newman Street, in London’s fashionable West End. Here, he had created an elaborate ‘palace’ of art, dedicated to history painting and to himself – his artistic genius, his artistic heroes, and his unique transatlantic identity. This impressive establishment was nearly fifty years in the making and part of an elaborate strategy to develop an artistic reputation as the pre-eminent history painter of his generation. While his studio has been considered by scholars as a place of pilgrimage for dozens of American students, its physicality and contents have never been thoroughly explored. Using a variety of evidence, including bank records, contemporary descriptions, and visual material, this thesis reconstructs much of this important space and collection to reveal how it was shaped and utilised by West. It combines a documentation of the spaces and objects with an analysis of their use and meaning in terms of the painter’s engagement with art theory, pedagogy, practice, collecting, display, and legacy. West, who was History Painter to George III, inhabited 14 Newman Street from 1774 to 1820, a period of dramatic expansion and cultural ambition in the London art world. Indeed, this thesis argues that 14 Newman Street and its impressive contents were more than just a history painter’s ‘palace’ of art but a place symbolic of the ideals and ambitions of British art. Following an introduction that more fully defines the aims and scope of this thesis, four chapters explore the significance of West’s house, his collections, and their display in this context. Chapter one provides an overview of his home and studio, and considers how it was designed with West’s various audiences in mind. The scope and character of his impressive collection is examined in the second chapter with a particular focus on a selection of Old and New World objects that represent particular areas of strength within the corpus of the collection. Chapter three examines the collection as a public and private artistic resource for West and his students as well as a statement of his commitment to the grand tradition. In chapter four, West’s self-promotion and exhibition strategies at Newman Street are addressed, highlighted by his exhibition of The Death of Lord Nelson in 1806. Developed in the dynamic context of the establishment of the Royal Academy, the proliferation of public exhibitions, and ongoing debates about national art, West’s collection and studio at 14 Newman Street exemplified the aspirations of British art.

Burelli, Giovanna.

Abstract:
2009/2010

Bradshaw, John. "The P.R.O. expert system shell." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006302.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports the research which led to the development of the P.R .O. Expert System Shell. The P.R.O . System is primarily, though not exclusively , designed for use in ecological domains. In the light of two specific expert systems, The RCS (River Conservation Status) and the Aquaculture Systems, which were developed as part of this research, a number of areas of importance have been identified. The most significant of these is the need to handle uncertainty effectively. The style of knowledge representation to be implemented also plays an important role. After consulting the relevant literature and the available microcomputer expert system shells, a number of ideas have been included in the P.R.O. System. The P.R.O . System is a backward chaining, production system based expert system shell. It embodies a simple but effective method of handling uncertainty. An important feature of this method is that it takes cognizance of the different relative importances of the conditions which need to be satisfied before a conclusion can be reached. The knowledge base consists of more than rules and questions. It also contains meta-knowledge, which is used by the inference engine. The P.R.O. System has been designed to be of practical use. Its strongest recommendations are therefore, that the two non-trivial systems which have been implemented in it, have been accepted by the experts and their peers as systems which produce good, accurate answers .

Campbell, David Nathan. "Provisions for leadership succession in the P.R.C." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28591.

Full text
Abstract:
Most analysts study leadership succession in communist states as a "crisis" which ensues after the death of a dominant leader. This study takes an alternative approach. It is a survey of provisions for leadership succession in the People's Republic, of China. This involves a comparison of the strategies and motivations of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in providing for their own succession. Deng Xiaoping's more extensive provisions for leadership succession during the CCP's transition towards a more institutionalized one-party bureaucratic rule are likely to be more durable than Mao's provisions in the earlier period. Nevertheless, guarantees of smooth and regularized succession, especially of protégés promoted on the basis of personal ties within the leadership core, may be impossible to obtain. Mao's provisions were aimed largely at what he saw as a probable, but deplorable, bureaucratic future of the PRC. Deng, on the other hand, perceives an element of opportunity in the succession process. He has tried to provide leadership that will, in his estimation, be better able to bring about China's modernization. In both leaders' provisions for succession, the elevation to the status of "heir apparent" of individuals has been a political liability to those individuals, especially when their promotion is perceived to be based largely on personal ties to the dominant leader. This liability becomes more pronounced in a period of bureaucratic, collective leadership. Because of his shifting policy preferences, his status as charismatic leader, and the ambitious nature of his protégés, Mao Zedong was unsuccessful in providing for his own succession. Deng Xiaoping, on the other hand, has been successful in cultivating a reserve of young, well-educated cadres. These provisions, because they are extensive and exist in a more subdued, consensus-oriented political environment, may well be Deng's most enduring legacy.

Abstract:
The national security challenge presented by the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) to the United States in the Western Hemisphere is principally long-term and indirect. It is a challenge that is widely misunderstood, and only partly related to the growing activities of P.R.C. armed forces in the hemisphere. The severity of the challenge, and its potential to transform from a difficult-to-define erosion of U.S. global position and long-term prosperity to an acute military threat, will depend, in part, on the adeptness of U.S. policymakers in navigating the landscape of threats and opportunities stemming from the rise of China as a dominant global actor. Whether U.S. policymakers are successful or not, China’s presence in the Western Hemisphere will likely continue to be a defining consideration for U.S. national security in the mid-21st century. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss that security challenge and the response of the U.S. to date, and to offer recommendations for U.S. policymakers.
