Abstract:
XIX a. gale esant labai nepalankioms kultūrinio gyvenimo sąlygoms (knygų gimtąja kalba nebuvimas mokyklose) egzistavo elementoriai, sudaryti „silabizavimo“ metodo pagrindu siekiant dvasininkijos tikslų; jie buvo spausdinami užsienyje. Šių elementorių autorių (A. Kriščiukaičio, P. Višinskio, K. Skabeikos) metodinėms paieškoms didelę įtaką darė rusų pedagogų, ypač L. N. Tolstojaus, K. D. Ušinskio, V. A. Flerovo ir kitų pažiūros. Šių pedagogų patirtis buvo kūrybiškai pritaikyta lietuviškos mokyklos sąlygoms.

Abstract:
D. Fernandez-Duque ir I. M. Thornton (2000) tariamai atrado, kad asmuo gali užfiksuoti pakitimą ir be sąmonės įsiterpimo. Tačiau šį atradimą gerokai menkina vienas pačių autorių pripažintas metodologinis trūkumas – kontrolinių bandymų nebuvimas. Siekdami tiksliau nustatyti, ar norint pastebėti pakitimą reikia sąmonės tarpininkavimo, ar jo užfiksavimas gali vykti ir be sąmonės įsiterpimo, dar kartą tyrėme, kaip matomame objekte aptinkamas pasikeitimas, tačiau šį kartą tyrėmė dvejopai: vienu atveju be kontrolinių bandymų, kaip ir D. Fernandez-Duque ir I. M. Thorntonas, o kitu atveju atlikome ir kontrolinius bandymus.Pirmasis tyrimas bendrais bruožais pakartojo D. Fernandez-Duque ir I. M. Thorntono atliktą tyrimą. Implicit detection of change: Can we do without awareness? Norvilas A., Miller J. C. SummaryD. Fernandez-Duque and I. M. Thornton (2000) seemingly demonstrated “unconscious detection of change” (p. 338), i.e. a person being able to register stimulus change without being aware of it. However, as the authors themselves point out, their experiment might harbor a potential flaw: the failure to include a control condition. In a series of two experiments, we tested participants’ ability to detect change, while not being aware of it, both in the absence and in the presence of a control condition. With the control condition absent, both experiments failed to replicate D. Fernandez-Duque and I. M. Thornton’s finding of an increase in change detection for unaware trials. With the control condition present, change detection did exceed the chance level. We argue that a correlated conscious strategy hypothesis offers a better account of the change detection results for unaware trials than the unconscious change detection hypothesis. Keywords: change detection, awareness, implicit change detection, conscious strategy.

Abstract:
AbstractDegelia cyanoloma (Schaer.) H. H. Blom & L. Lindblom is resurrected from synonymy and elevated from varietal rank to species. The taxon was earlier referred to D. plumbea (Lightf.) P. M. Jørg. & P. James, however, several discontinuous character states distinguish the two species. Degelia cyanoloma is characterized morphologically by having a large thallus that is pale greyish when dry, lobes that are composed of consecutive trough-shaped segments with an upper surface without squamules, no isidia or soredia, and apothecia discs that are dark reddish brown to blackish. Degelia cyanoloma has a euoceanic distribution and is known from western Europe (Norway, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Portugal, Spain). Based on results from studies of morphology, we hypothesize that D. atlantica (Degel.) P. M. Jørg. & P. James is the closest relative of D. cyanoloma among the European species of the genus whereas D. plumbea is closely related to D. ligulata P. M. Jørg. & P. James.

Abstract:
P. D. James is the successor to Agatha Christie as the queen of contemporary crime fiction. She is also a writer whose work is imbued with deep Christian convictions. Her novels are concerned to declare not merely who “done” it, but also why. She probes human motives with an unusually keen eye for the mystery of iniquity, especially the desire to murder in the name of good. James's novels also wrestle with the very largest moral and social questions, and her fiction suggests answers that are deeply incarnational.

Abstract:
Rickets was a major public health problem dating from Roman times, and medical descriptions of rickets date from the 17th century. Sniadecki first advocated treatment by exposure to sunshine in 1822; contemporaneously, several British physicians advocated use of cod liver oil. Both approaches were successful. Work in 1924 showed that exposure to UV light endowed fats and other foods with antirachitic properties. Vitamins D2 and D3, the antirachitic agent in cod liver oil, were, respectively, produced by UV radiation of ergosterol and 7-dehydrocholesterol. Calcitriol (1,25[OH]2D3) was identified as the biologically active form of vitamin D in the early 1970s. The vitamin D 25-hydroxylase, 24-hydroxylase, and 1α-hydroxylase were cloned in the 1990s and their genetic defects were soon delineated. The vitamin D receptor was also cloned and its mutations identified in vitamin D-resistant rickets. Work with parathyroid hormone (PTH) began much later, as the parathyroids were not identified until the late 19th century. In 1925, James B. Collip (of insulin fame) identified PTH by its ability to correct tetany in parathyroidectomized dogs, but only in the 1970s was it clear that only a small fragment of PTH conveyed its activity. Congenital hypoparathyroidism with immune defects was described in 1968, eventually linked to microdeletions in chromosome 22q11.2. X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets was reported in 1957, and genetic linkage analysis identified the causative <i>PHEX</i> gene in 1997. Autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets similarly led to the discovery of FGF23, a phosphate-wasting humoral factor made in bone, in 2000, revolutionizing our understanding of phosphorus metabolism.

Abstract:
The Children of Men, the 1992 novel of English crime writer P. D. James, combines dystopia with the apocalyptic narrative. In 2021, England, like the rest of the world, faces extinction, as, mysteriously, global infertility has struck. The prevailing ‘sense of an ending’ has drained the energy of the people, who allow themselves to be ruled by the Warden of England, whom most regard as a benevolent dictator. In the secondary sources the conversion of Theo Faron, the stoic, self-regarding protagonist, is primarily read as a gradual awakening to love and faith, attesting the book a touch of the utopian and of the Christian parable. In contrast, this deconstructive reading of the novel explores the mechanisms accountable for a desolidarisation in the doomed society, which, eventually, appears to be irreversible, something glossed over in the text and in the available literature.

Abstract:
AbstractWith 30 species, Tasmania is a major area of species diversity in the genus Menegazzia. Seven of these are new to science: M. abscondita Kantvilas, known from Tasmania and New Zealand, and M. athrotaxidis Kantvilas, M. hypogymnioides Kantvilas, M. petraea Kantvilas, M. ramulicola Kantvilas, M. subtestacea Kantvilas and M. tarkinea Kantvilas, all endemic to Tasmania. An identification key, descriptions based exclusively on Tasmanian collections, and detailed discussion of distribution, ecology, chemical composition and inter-species relationships are provided. All literature records of Menegazzia species pertaining to Tasmania are accounted for. New synonyms include: Menegazzia prototypica P. James and Parmelia pertusa var. coskinodes F. Wilson [synonyms of M. myriotrema (Müll. Arg.) R. Sant.], M. fertilis P. James [a synonym of M. platytrema (Müll. Arg.) R. Sant.] and Parmelia pertusa var. montana F. Wilson (a synonym of M. subtestacea). Incorrectly recorded species that should be deleted from the Tasmanian census include M. castanea P. James & D. J. Galloway (present on Macquarie Island) and M. testacea P. James & D. J. Galloway (endemic to New Zealand). The South American species, M. sanguinascens (Räs.) R. Sant., is recorded in Australasia (Tasmania) for the first time, whereas the widespread south-eastern Australian M. norstictica P. James is recorded for Western Australia. Salient features of the genus are discussed, including morphology, anatomy and chemistry. The biogeography of the genus is explored briefly. Twelve species (40%) are endemic to Tasmania, a level of endemism unmatched by any other species-rich genus on the island. Twelve species are shared with mainland Australia, eleven are shared with New Zealand, and only four species are shared with southern South America, all of which are sorediate, suggesting they are products of long-distance dispersal.

Abstract:
Nilai kelulushidupan tertinggi hingga terendah berturut-turut yaitu 50,00% (perlakuan E), 30,00% (perlakuan D), 26,67% (perlakuan B), 23,33% (perlakuan F), 13,33% (perlakuan C), dan 10,00% (perlakuan A).

Assume i.i.d. observations are available from a p-dimensional multivariate normal distribution with an unknown mean vector μ and an unknown p .d. diaper- . sion matrix ∑. Here we address the problem of mean estimation in a decision theoretic setup. It is well known that the unbiased as well as the maximum likelihood estimator of μ is inadmissible when p ≤ 3 and is dominated by the famous James-Stein estimator (JSE). There are a few estimators which are better than the JSE reported in the literature, but in this paper we derive wide classes of estimators uniformly better than the JSE. We use some of these estimators for further risk study.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to examine the effects of a plant extract mixture, a microencapsulated product composed of eugenol and garlic tincture (PE), on intestinal health in broilers under necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge. A total of 960 d-old mixed-sex Cobb 500 chicks were randomly distributed to 48-floor pens housing 20 birds per pen. Six treatments were applied: UC, unchallenged control; CC, challenged control; PE, challenged group plus PE; AM, challenged group plus antimicrobial (AM); FAP, challenged group plus a full dose of AM with PE; HAP, challenged group plus a half dose of AM with PE in starter, grower and finisher phases. Birds in the challenged groups were inoculated with Eimeria spp. on d 9 and Clostridiumperfringens on d 14. On d 16, the CC group had increased serum fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-d), reduced villus surface area, goblet cell number, upregulated CLDN1, JAM2 genes and reduced microbial diversity compared to the UC group (p < 0.05). Birds fed PE had reduced FITC-d, increased goblet cell number and Bifidobacterium compared to the CC group (p < 0.05). Birds fed PE had reduced CLDN5 expression in male birds, and Bacteroides spp. in female birds than CC group (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that PE supplementation mitigates the effect of NE by improving the intestinal health of birds.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Well protected by fortifications of their famed cuadrilátero, Paraguayan soldiers surely exclaimed in wonder as they looked toward Brazilian lines on June 24, 1867. There, rising slowly in a hazy wintry sky, was a captive balloon held by two strong ascension ropes. An observer with a good spyglass could have seen in the basket two men who gazed intently at the Paraguayan positions. The aeronauts were James Allen of Rhode Island and Sergeant Major Roberto Adolfo Chodasiewicz, a Polish military engineer and cartographer. This first ascension by the smaller of two balloons proved that the brothers James and Ezra Allen, with the aid of Chodasiewicz, could succeed where a Frenchman, P. L. D. Doyen, had failed on December 14, 1866.

Full text
Abstract:
The support of the tensor product decomposition of integrable irreducible highest weight representations of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra g \mathfrak {g} defines a semigroup of triples of weights. Namely, given λ \lambda in the set P + P_+ of dominant integral weights, V ( λ ) V(\lambda ) denotes the irreducible representation of g \mathfrak {g} with highest weight λ \lambda . We are interested in the tensor semigroup Γ N ( g ) ≔ { ( λ 1 , λ 2 , μ ) ∈ P + 3 | V ( μ ) ⊂ V ( λ 1 ) ⊗ V ( λ 2 ) } , \begin{equation*} \Gamma _{\mathbb {N}}(\mathfrak {g})≔\{(\lambda _1,\lambda _2,\mu )\in P_{+}^3\,|\, V(\mu )\subset V(\lambda _1)\otimes V(\lambda _2)\}, \end{equation*} and in the tensor cone Γ ( g ) \Gamma (\mathfrak {g}) it generates: Γ ( g ) ≔ { ( λ 1 , λ 2 , μ ) ∈ P + , Q 3 | ∃ N ≥ 1 V ( N μ ) ⊂ V ( N λ 1 ) ⊗ V ( N λ 2 ) } . \begin{equation*} \Gamma (\mathfrak {g})≔\{(\lambda _1,\lambda _2,\mu )\in P_{+,{\mathbb {Q}}}^3\,|\,\exists N\geq 1 \quad V(N\mu )\subset V(N\lambda _1)\otimes V(N\lambda _2)\}. \end{equation*} Here, P + , Q P_{+,{\mathbb {Q}}} denotes the rational convex cone generated by P + P_+ . In the special case when g \mathfrak {g} is a finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebra, the tensor semigroup is known to be finitely generated and hence the tensor cone to be convex polyhedral. Moreover, the cone Γ ( g ) \Gamma (\mathfrak {g}) is described in Belkale and Kumar [Invent. Math. 166 (2006), pp. 185–228] by an explicit finite list of inequalities. In general, Γ ( g ) \Gamma (\mathfrak {g}) is neither polyhedral, nor closed. In this article we describe the closure of Γ ( g ) \Gamma (\mathfrak {g}) by an explicit countable family of linear inequalities for any untwisted affine Lie algebra, which is the most important class of infinite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebra. This solves a Brown-Kumar’s conjecture in this case (see Brown and Kumar [Math. Ann. 360 (2014), pp. 901–936]). The difference between the tensor cone and the tensor semigroup is measured by the saturation factors. Namely, a positive integer d d is called a saturation factor, if V ( N λ 1 ) ⊗ V ( N λ 2 ) V(N\lambda _1)\otimes V(N\lambda _2) contains V ( N μ ) V(N\mu ) for some positive integer N N then V ( d λ 1 ) ⊗ V ( d λ 2 ) V(d\lambda _1)\otimes V(d\lambda _2) contains V ( d μ ) V(d\mu ) , assuming that μ − λ 1 − λ 2 \mu -\lambda _1-\lambda _2 belongs to the root lattice. For g = s l n \mathfrak {g}={\mathfrak {sl}}_n , the famous Knutson-Tao theorem asserts that d = 1 d=1 is a saturation factor (see Knutson and Tao [J. Amer. Math. Soc. 12 (1999), pp. 1055–1090]). More generally, for any simple Lie algebra, explicit saturation factors are known. In the Kac-Moody case, Γ N ( g ) \Gamma _{\mathbb {N}}(\mathfrak {g}) is not necessarily finitely generated and hence the existence of such a factor is unclear a priori. Here, we obtain explicit saturation factors for any affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra. For example, in type A ~ n \tilde A_n , we prove that any integer d ≥ 2 d\geq 2 is a saturation factor, generalizing the case A ~ 1 \tilde A_1 shown in Brown and Kumar [Math. Ann. 360 (2014), pp. 901–936].

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Weight gain and vitamin D deficiency are associated with increased systemic inflammation and chronic diseases. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of regular Pilates training associated with Vitamin D intake on Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) and Interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels in overweight males. Methods & Materials: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 52 overweight men aged 45-55 years. Volunteers were firstly selected through the convenience sampling method. Then, they were divided into Pilates training, Pilates training + vitamin D supplementation, vitamin D supplementation (combined), and control groups (n=13/group). The provided Pilates training program was performed for 8 weeks (with the intensity of 50%-75% of reserve heart rate, 3 sessions/week). The supplement and combined groups also received 50000 units of oral vitamin D weekly for 8 weeks. The serum levels of variables were determined using the ELISA method. The obtained data were analyzed by Paired Samples t-test, one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Kruskal–Wallis test at the significant level of <0.05. Ethical Considerations: This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee at Islamic Azad University, Babol Branch, Iran (Code: IR.IAU.BABOL.REC.1398.088). Also, this study was approved by the Iranian Clinical Trial Registration Center (Code: IRCT20190831044650N2) Results: The collected results indicated that 8 weeks of Pilates training, vitamin D intake, and the combined intervention were associated with a significant increase in IL-10 (P<0.001) and a decrease in TNF-α (P<0.001). Additionally, the presented combination intervention was associated with further alternations in the research variables, compared to the other two interventions; however, in the exercise group, the decrease in TNF-α level was more than that in the vitamin D intake group (P=0.012). Conclusion: It seems that in overweight combined with vitamin D deficiency stats, the anti-inflammatory effects of Pilates training, vitamin D supplementation interventions, and a combination of the two methods can be attributed in part to up-regulation IL-10 and TNF-α reduction; however, the effectiveness of the combined intervention on the development of inflammation was greater than that of the other two interventions. Furthermore, the effect of Pilates training on reducing TNF-α was stronger than that of vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract:
Background:Previous research in axial spondyloarthropathy(axSpA) has shown this population to have a high prevalence of depression. This co-morbidity has been previously shown to impact disease activity in patients with rheumatic disease. Objectives:The purpose of this study was to screen for early signs of depression using two validated tools, the Patient Health Questionaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale for depression (HADs-D) in patients with known axSpA.Methods:AxSpA patients attending the Rheumatology department in St James’ Hospital between February and October 2020 were invited to take a self-administered survey which included the PHQ-9 and the HADs-D. Scores from the HADs-D yielded a numerical result which was then categorised as normal, borderline or abnormal. PHQ-9 numerical results were categorised as normal, mild, moderate, moderate/severe or severe. Patients with a known diagnosis of depression were excluded. In addition to baseline demographics, patient reported outcomes from the clinic visit were also recorded.Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 26. Continuous variables were recorded as means, categorical variables as frequencies with percentages. A one-way analysis of variance analysis (ANOVA) was used to determine significance of variation in outcomes between patient outcomes as determined by the HADs-D and PHQ-9. A p-value of <0.05 was deemed significant. Consent was obtained prior to participation. Approval was received from the St James’/Tallaght Hospital Joint Ethics Committee. Results:In total 71 axSpA patients took part in the survey. The population was 70.4%(50) males and 29.5%(21) female, with an average age 47.9 years and mean disease duration 19.7 years (mean outcomes: BASDAI 4.08, BASFI 3.62, BASMI 3.54, ASQoL 6.79). Overall, 7 (9.9%) participants recorded abnormal HADs-D scores, while 17 (23.9%) recorded moderate to severe PHQ-9 scores indicative of underlying depression. AxSpA females had higher mean HADs-D scores (7.5 vs 4.8, p=0.01) than males, with abnormal scores in 19%(4) of females and 6% (3) of males. No significant differences were found in PHQ-9 scores between genders.Analysis revealed significantly worse BASDAI (6.27 vs 3.42, p<0.01) and AQoL scores (12.57 vs 5.26, p<0.01) in axSpA patients with abnormal compared to normal HADs-D scores. No significant differences were noted in BASFI, BASMI or baseline demographics. A similar pattern was noted on analysis of PHQ-9 scores, with significantly worse BASDAI (7.9 vs 2.55, p<0.01), BASFI (8.05 vs 2.33, p<0.01) and ASQoL (19.5 vs 2.62, p<0.01) noted in those scoring as severe compared to normal. No significant differences were detected in BASMI scores or baseline demographics. Conclusion:A high percentage of axSpA patients recorded high HADs-D and PHQ-9 scores concerning for undiagnosed depression. These patients were noted to have significantly worse disease activity and quality of life as compared to patients with normal scores. Clinicians treating axSpA should consider screening for depression in this population.Disclosure of Interests:Sinead Maguire Speakers bureau: Speaker fee from Jassen, Grant/research support from: Recipient of the Gilead Inflammation Fellowship Grant, Finbar Barry O’Shea: None declared

Abstract:
AbstractThe authors investigate whether radar remote sensing of a certain class of ice clouds allows for characterization of the precipitation rates and aggregation processes. The NASA DC-8 collected the measurements in tropical anvils during July and August 2007 as part of the Tropical Composition, Cloud and Climate Coupling (TC4) experiment. Measured hydrometeor size distributions are used to estimate precipitation rates (P) and to solve the hydrodynamical collection equation. These distributions are also used to estimate radar reflectivity factors (Z) and Doppler velocities (Vd) at W, Ka, and Ku bands. Optimal estimation techniques are then used to estimate the uncertainty in retrieving P and aggregation rates (A) from combinations of Z and Vd. It is found that diagnosing information about A requires significant averaging and that a dual-frequency combination of W and Ka bands seems to provide the most information for the ice clouds sampled during TC4. Furthermore, the addition of Vd with expected uncertainty contributes little to the microphysical retrieval of either P or A. It is also shown that accounting for uncertainty in ice microphysical bulk density dominates the retrieval uncertainty in both P and A causing, for instance, the instantaneous uncertainty in retrieved P to increase from ~30% to ~200%.

Abstract:
AbstractMacquarie Island (54.50°S, 158.94°E) is an isolated island with modest orography in the midst of the Southern Ocean with precipitation records dating back to 1948. These records (referred to as MAC) are of particular interest because of the relatively large biases in the energy and water budgets commonly found in climate simulations and reanalysis products over the region. A basic climatology of the surface precipitation P is presented and compared with the ERA-Interim (ERA-I) reanalysis. The annual ERA-I precipitation (953 mm) is found to underestimate the annual MAC precipitation (1023 mm) by 6.8% from 1979 to 2011. The frequency of 3-h surface precipitation at MAC is 36.4% from 2003 to 2011. Light precipitation (0.066 ≤ P < 0.5 mm h−1) dominates this dataset (29.7%), and heavy precipitation (P ≥ 1.5 mm h−1) is rare (1.1%). Drizzle (0 < P < 0.066 mm h−1) is commonly produced by ERA-I (43.9%) but is weaker than the detectable threshold of MAC. Warm rain intensity and frequency from CloudSat products were compared with those from MAC. These CloudSat products also recorded considerable drizzle (16%–30%) but were not significantly different from MAC when P ≥ 0.5 mm h−1. Heavy precipitation events were, in general, more commonly associated with fronts and cyclonic lows. Some heavy precipitation events were found to arise from weaker fronts and lows that were not adequately represented in the reanalysis products. Yet other heavy precipitation events were observed at points/times not associated with either fronts or cyclonic lows. Two case studies are employed to further examine this finding.

Mean and standard deviation were used to compare the biomarkers with paired t-test. p-value <0.05 was taken as significant. Results: The mean age of the study population was 55.5±9.1 years and 50 (72.5%) were male. Among survivors, the increase in CRP level was not significant (from 15.80±9.8 mg/dl to 17.87±8.4 mg/dl, p=0.45) while it was significant in non-survivors (from 16.68±10.90 mg/dl to 20.77±12.69 mg/dl, p=0.04). There was no significant rise in LDH levels in survivors (from 829.59±499 U/L to 1018.6±468 U/L, p=0.20) while it increased significantly in non-survivors (from 816.2±443.08 U/L to 1056.61±480.54 U/L, p=0.003). The decrease in lymphocyte count and increase in D-Dimers in both the groups was significant (p=0.001). There was no significant elevation in ferritin in both the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: In severe COVID-19 patients, serum CRP and LDH can be used for risk stratification and predicting survival. Lymphopenia, increase in serum ferritin and D-dimers may not predict survival.
