Abstract:
‘You are what you eat … plus a few per mil’ explains delta notation and organic isotopic fractionation. An isotopic balance has to be maintained, so the isotopic fractionation into a mineral crystallizing from a fluid will be balanced by a change in the isotopic composition of the remaining fluid. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and strontium isotope values can be measured through the food chain and in animal and human bones. There is also a geographical oxygen isotope zonation, but this is disrupted by major changes in topography. Isotopic measurements helped in identifying King Richard III’s bones and providing background to the life of the 5,000-year-old ‘Ötzi the Iceman’ found in the Ötztal Alps.

Abstract:
Stable isotope analysis is firmly established as a method for the investigation of past population mobility. The distinction between local and non-local individuals within a cemetery population relies on identifying an individual’s place of childhood residence through the analysis of strontium and oxygen isotopes present in human tooth enamel. Traditionally, studies investigating mobility focus on the analysis of a single tooth. More recently, however, it has become apparent that in order to investigate the mobility of an individual during childhood—and thus to consider the importance of children in the migration process—it is necessary to analyse a series of teeth which form at different stages during the early years of life. This chapter will consider the potential of—and challenges surrounding—this scientific approach to the investigation of childhood mobility in the past.

Abstract:
Tiny microfossils called Foraminifera form calcium carbonate shells that record the δ18O composition of the seawater in which they grew. These microfossils are found in sea bed sediment cores, and a lot of information from these oxygen isotope records can be extracted. ‘Reconstructing the past and weathering the future’ looks at the methodology used in palaeoclimate studies and explains gain and phase modelling and Milankovitch orbital cycles. Similar isotope temperature records have been constructed from polar ice cores. Atmospheric CO2 composition can be reconstructed from the amount of CO2 dissolved in the ice. A new sub-discipline of clumped isotope geochemistry—‘isotomics’—will have applications far beyond carbonate palaeothermometry.
