Abstract:
The reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and metal (Cu,Zn)-oxide composites were prepared using a one-step hydrothermal technique. The role of (Cu,Zn)-oxide on the physical and electrochemical properties of the composite was investigated. The composite consists of various shapes of ZnO nanoflowers and micro-spheres, as well as Cu-oxide nanoflakes and octahedron-like shapes. The (Cu,Zn)-oxides were formed in between the rGO layers and observed in the rGO-ZnO, rGO-CuO, and rGO-CuO-ZnO composites. The presence of ZnO, CuO, and rGO within the composite structure is also confirmed by the analyses of crystal structure, microstructure, and surface functional groups. Some excess impurities remaining from the surfactant give considerable differences in the electrochemical performance of the composites. The specific capacitance values of the rGO, rGO-ZnO, rGO-CuO, rGO-(0.5CuO-0.5ZnO), and rGO-(0.25CuO-0.75ZnO) composites are 9.32, 58.53, 54.14, 25.21, and 69.27 F/g, respectively. The formation ofa double metal-oxide structure as well as their insertion into the rGO sheet can significantly improve the electrochemical properties of the supercapacitor.

Abstract:
The oxide-carbonate composite electrolyte material with high ionic conductivity at low temperature has been thought that it can be used to develop LT-SOFC. However, the carbonate composite electrolyte is not easy to make it dense, especially mixing and packing oxide and carbonate to fabricate the composite electrolyte simply. In this article, rare-earth-doped CeO2 (RDC) (R = La, Sm, Gd, and Gd + Y) series samples were prepared by wet ball-milling, then sintered into fully dense and porous oxide bulk at 1500–1600 °C and 1000 °C. Melted carbonate LNCO, composed of Li2CO3 and Na2CO3 at a molar ratio of 1:1, was combined with porous oxide bulk materials using a bath method at 500 °C for 10 h to prepare a dense carbonate-oxide composite electrolyte. The dense oxide-carbonate composite electrolyte always obtains by this fabrication process. Boiling water was used to remove carbonate from these composites. Lattice parameters were obtained through Rietveld refinement, and a calculation procedure for quantifying the composite density was proposed. The quantified composite density results were verified through scanning electron microscopy microstructure observations. The Ce valence in the RDC oxides and RDC-carbonate composite was analyzed by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy to observe the effects of heat treatment temperature and carbonate on the Ce4+/Ce3+ mixed-valence state in doped CeO2.

Abstract:
Microbial antibiotic resistance is an important global world health problem. Recently, an interest in nanoparticles (NPs) of silver oxides as compounds with antibacterial potential has significantly increased. From a practical point of view, composites of silver oxide NPs and biocompatible material are of interest. A borosiloxane (BS) can be used as one such material. A composite material combining BS and silver oxide NPs has been synthesized. Composites containing BS have adjustable viscoelastic properties. The silver oxide NPs synthesized by laser ablation have a size of ~65 nm (half-width 60 nm) and an elemental composition of Ag2O. The synthesized material exhibits strong bacteriostatic properties against E. coli at a concentration of nanoparticles of silver oxide more than 0.01%. The bacteriostatic effect depends on the silver oxide NPs concentration in the matrix. The BS/silver oxide NPs have no cytotoxic effect on a eukaryotic cell culture when the concentration of nanoparticles of silver oxide is less than 0.1%. The use of the resulting composite based on BS and silver oxide NPs as a reusable dry disinfectant is due to its low toxicity and bacteriostatic activity and its characteristics are not inferior to the medical alloy nitinol.

Abstract:
The reduced graphene oxide/iron oxide (rGO/Fe2O3) and reduced graphene oxide/cobalt oxide (rGO/Co3O4) composite anodes have been successfully prepared through a simple and scalable ball-milling synthesis. The substantial interaction of Fe2O3 and Co3O4 with the rGO matrix strengthens the electronic conductivity and limits the volume variation during cycling in the rGO/Fe2O3 and rGO/Co3O4 composites because reduced graphene oxide (rGO) helps the metal oxides (MOs) to attain a more efficient diffusion of Li-ions and leads to high specific capacities. As anode materials for LIBs, the rGO/Fe2O3 and rGO/Co3O4 composites demonstrate overall superb electrochemical properties, especially rGO/Fe2O3T−5 and rGO/Co3O4T−5, showcasing higher reversible capacities of 1021 and 773 mAhg−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mAg−1, accompanied by the significant rate performance. Because of their superior electrochemical efficiency, high capacity and low cost, the rGO/Fe2O3 and rGO/Co3O4 composites made by ball milling could be outstanding anode materials for LIBs. Due to the excellent electrochemical performance, the rGO/Fe2O3 and rGO/Co3O4 composites prepared via ball milling could be promising anode materials with a high capacity and low cost for LIBs. The findings may provide shed some light on how other metal oxides wrapped by rGO can be prepared for future applications.

Abstract:
Cerium-zirconium composite oxides (Ce0.7Zr0.3O2) have a remarkable effect on catalytic removal of carbon particles (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) emitted from diesel engine, in order to further improve the thermal stability, oxygen storage capacity and low temperature catalytic REDOX performance of cerium zirconium composite oxides (Ce0.7Zr0.3O2), a small amount of Pr and Nd rare earth elements are doped to improve the catalytic activity of cerium zirconium composite oxides. In this paper, the composite oxide of Pr6O11–Nd2O3–CeO2–ZrO2 is prepared by unsteady co-precipitation method, and the physicochemical properties of the composite oxide catalyst are analyzed by BET, SEM, XRD and ICP. The gas adsorption capacity and catalytic activity of composite oxide catalysts are measured by temperature programmed reaction technology (TPR). The results show that the composite oxide of Pr0.05Nd0.05Ce0.6Zr0.3O2 prepared by using rare earth elements Pr and Nd inhibits the growth process of grain, refining the grain, and improving the sintering phenomenon at high temperature. The addition of Pr and Nd causes lattice defects, increases the number of oxygen vacancies, and improves the mobility of lattice oxygen, namely promotes oxide oxygen storage property, gas adsorption and catalytic oxidation reduction ability. After modification, Pr0.05Nd0.05Ce0.6Zr0.3O2 has good resistance to high temperature aging performance, prolongs the service life, reduces the PM lowest ignition temperature and minimum catalytic activity temperature of nitrogen oxide, and promotes the NOX reduction rate. For Pr0.05Nd0.05Ce0.6Zr0.3O2, the lowest ignition temperature of PM is about 150 °C, and the lowest catalytic activity temperature of NO is about 130 °C. The maximum CO2 production rate is 68.3%, and the maximum NO reduction rate is 45%.

With the emerging technology in the 21st century, which requires higher electrochemical performances, metal oxide composite electrodes in particular offer complementary properties of individual materials via the incorporation of both physical and chemical charge storage mechanism together in a single electrode. Numerous works reviewed herein have identified a wide variety of attractive metal oxide-based composite electrode material for symmetric and asymmetric electrochemical capacitors. The focus of the review is the detailed literature data and discussion regarding the electrochemical performance of various metal oxide composite electrodes fabricated from different configurations including binary and ternary composites. Additionally, projection of future development in hybrid capacitor coupling lithium metal oxides and carbonaceous materials are found to obtain significantly higher energy storage than currently available commercial electrochemical capacitors. This review describes the novel concept of lithium metal oxide electrode materials which are of value to researchers in developing high-energy and enhanced-cyclability electrochemical capacitors comparable to Li -ion batteries. In order to fully exploit the potential of metal oxide composite electrode materials, developing low cost, environment-friendly nanocomposite electrodes is certainly a research direction that should be extensively investigated in the future.

Abstract:
Composites with the formula nMOx–СеО2, where n is the mole part of copper or manganese oxide have been synthesized via citric acid aided route. Physico-chemical properties of materials obtained are investigated by XRD, low temperature desorption of nitrogen and by temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). It is defined that the composites with the n < 0.25 (for Cu) and < 0.75 (Mn) are the solid solutions obtained by the replacement of cerium ions in the structure of fluorite (СеО2) by copper or manganese ions. The existence of the separate phases of oxides such as CuO and Mn3O4 has been identified in the XRD patterns of composites with formula 0.25CuО–СеО2 and 0.75MnOx–СеО2. The parameters of cell and the particles size for all samples are calculated; decreasing these values occurs due to the solid solutions formation. Specific area of composites obtained is much bigger than specific area of individual oxides; the biggest values are determined for the samples containing the biggest part of copper or manganese oxide. According to TPR profiles of composites themaximal intensity of low temperature peak has the composite 0.25CuО–СеО2 that means the biggest part of the solid solution; so this material is the most active in CO and ethanol combustion. This fact can be explained by appearance of additional oxygen vacancies when ions Ce4+ are replacement by ions with the less oxidation state. The quantities of hydrogen used for reduction of samples with the copper oxide and samples with the manganese oxide with n < 0.5 are much bigger than the theoretical values; in this case the reduction of the part of ceria in the solid solution is happened. The composite 0.25MnOx–CeO2 is the most active in the ethanol combustion; full conversion to CO2 is finished at 205°С. The high activity of individual oxide MnOx and the composite 0.75MnOx–СеО2 in the reaction of toluene oxidation explains by the biggest part of Mn3+ ions in their structure among the all oxides investigated.

The review describes composite electrolytes based on classical salt matrix phases, and also shows the possibilities of creating composites using simple or complex oxide matrices, where simple substances, salts, simple and complex oxides are used as heterogeneous dopant. The magnitude of the composite effect of electrical conductivity is discussed from the point of view of various theories of its quantitative description. The reasons for the occurrence of the composite effect are summarized. The effect of increasing ionic conductivity is due to the disorder of the surface layer in the intergranular space, amorphization or spreading of the matrix phase or the phase of heterogeneous dopant over the surface of the other phase due to the difference in surface energy, as well as the possibility of joint manifestation of these effects when using complex oxide eutectic composites with treatment above the temperature of the eutectic system.

Abstract:
Nowadays, oxide/oxide composites are most of the time developed by sintering, sol-gel process or CVI (Chemical Vapor Infiltration). These techniques include many steps of synthesis leading to a long time of synthesis and possible deteriorations of the properties of the composite. This thesis focuses on an original and rapid process developed by French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA): the film boiling chemical vapor infiltration. This technique is already used to synthesize C/C and C/SiC composites but works have never focused on oxide/oxide composites. The main goal of this thesis is to synthesize oxide/oxide composites by film boiling chemical vapor infiltration. Works were focused on alumina, silica and barium aluminosilicate matrices. Several experimental parameters were studied: temperature, time and liquid precursor. Microstructural and physicochemical characterizations were done on composites. Several modifications of the experimental setup have been made in order to allow a better reproducibility of the tests and a better thermal monitoring

Abstract:
The introduction of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for structural applications in the hot section of a gas turbine provides many potential benefits over conventional alloy materials, including facilitating elevated operating temperatures. The development of an oxide-oxide CMC composed of commercially available Nextel 720 (3M) fibres within a porous alumina matrix was presented. A simple, low cost processing method involving slurry impregnation and subsequent consolidation and densification was developed, facilitating the production of dried pre-impregnated fabric (‘pre-preg’) that can be stored in ambient conditions. Detailed investigation into the effect of three types of PVA binder, the effect of 0-20wt% additions of an alumina precursor (ACH), the influence of a bimodal particle distribution and the effect of sintering at temperatures between 1100 and 1300°C on processing and mechanical properties was completed in order to optimise the material. The optimised composite material, composed of Nextel 720 fibres within a submicron alumina particle matrix with 10wt% ACH sintered at 1200°C, exhibited mean flexural strength >205MPa, short beam shear strength >12MPa and tensile strength >146MPa. These results were comparable to similar oxide CMCs previously reported, validating this material.

Abstract:
Oxide-carbonate composites are promising electrolytes for LT-SOFC, thanks to their high conductivity (0.1-1 S/cm at 600°C). A deeper understanding on the origins of their improved performances is still necessary. For this purpose, a combined theoretical and experimental approach was developed. We first studied systematically the conductivity of the material, measured through EIS, as a function of different oxide or carbonate phases and of the operating atmosphere. Results on YSZ- and CeO2-based materials indicate that by only taking into account the interfaces it is possible to rationalize some surprising observations, while reactivity issues have been observed for TiO2-carbonate composites. We then proposed a computational strategy based on periodic DFT calculations: we first studied the bulk structure of each phase so as to select an adequate computational protocol, which has then been used to identify a suitable model of the most stable surface for each phase. These surface models have thus been combined to obtain a model of the oxide-carbonate interface that through static DFT and MD provides a deeper insight on the interface at the atomic level. This strategy was applied to provide information on the structure, stability and electronic properties of the interface. YSZ-LiKCO3 was used as a case study to investigate the conduction mechanisms of different species. Results showed a strong influence of the interfaces on the transport properties. The TiO2-LiKCO3 model was, instead, used to investigate the reactivity of these materials. Overall, these results pave the way toward a deeper understanding of the basic operating principles of SOFC based on these materials

Abstract:
In the aerospace and defense industry, thermostructural applications require increasingly high-performance materials, combining mechanical strength, refractoriness, and lightness. To meet these demands, all-oxide ceramic matrix composites (OCMC) are considered promising candidates. Among the matrices for these OCMCs, barium aluminosilicate (BAS) stands out due to its advantageous physical properties, particularly as a material for radomes. However, to make this material functional at high temperatures, close to its melting point (1750°C), it is essential to reinforce it with a thermochemically stable material that has an appropriate architecture. Previous theses have successfully mastered the hexagonal phase of BAS. The chemical nature of the reinforcement, which offers the desired stability with BAS, has been identified, and OCMC Al2O3/BAS composites with 1D and 2D fibrous reinforcements have been developed. However, to achieve materials with enhanced properties under severe thermostructural conditions, these OCMCs need to be produced with a "3D" reinforcement architecture. This work focuses on the development of such a composite with a complex (3D) fiber reinforcement architecture and the evaluation of its properties. To achieve this, the research involves studying the sintering of BAS-H to predict its behavior as a matrix, improving its rheological behavior in suspension to facilitate infiltration into the fibrous reinforcement preform, and implementing an impregnation process suitable for 3D reinforcements. Following these studies, the fabrication of OCMC Al2O3/BAS was completed, demonstrating promising characteristics for the intended application

Abstract:
Gas turbine combustor concepts designed to give improved control of NOx emissions require the usage of hot uncooled walls. The main material properties needed in this application include mechanical and chemical stability at temperatures in excess of 1400°C for long times (>10 000 hours). Composites made from single crystal oxide fibre reinforced oxide with a compatible high temperature stable weak oxide interphase are potential candidate materials to meet these requirements. Alumina was chosen as a model material, unidirectional and 2D composites were processed and a suitable weak zirconia interphase was designed. The process was scaled-up to make production of larger panels and components possible. Mechanical testing was carried out at room temperature to characterise the performance of the material in the as produced and thermally aged condition. Room temperature mechanical properties compared well with other current ceramic composites and excellent high temperature stability was demonstrated. The applicability of the composite as a material for uncooled combustor walls is to be further assessed by evaluation in a combustor test rig. Results from computational fluid dynamics and finite element calculations as well as results from combustor rig tests of monolithic and composite ceramic tiles will be presented.

Abstract:
WHIPOX® (Wound Highly Porous Oxide CMCs) are oxide/oxide composites which are composed of highly porous alumino silicate or alumina matrices and of alumino silicate (Nextel 720, 3M) or alumina (Nextel 610, 3M) fibers. The materials are fabricated by a computer-controlled winding technique, developed at DLR. After eventual forming and joining steps, the green prepegs are pressureless sintered in air at 1300°C. The high temperature behavior of the CMCs is mainly controlled by the thermo-mechanical properties of the oxide fibers. For long-term use (>10,000 h) an application limit for the composite of about 1100°C is expected. It can, however, be improved by external thermal barrier coatings up to a maximum surface temperature of 1300°C. Gas burner tests show that the composites are extremely resistant against thermal fatigue. Therefore it is a material with a high potential for the use under the long-term high temperature conditions of gas turbine engines.

Full text
Abstract:
Foreign object damage (FOD) behavior of an oxide/oxide (N720/AS) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) was determined at ambient temperature using impact velocities ranging from 100 to 400 m/s by 1.59-mm diameter steel-ball projectiles. Two different support configurations of target specimens were used: fully supported and partially supported. The degree of post-impact strength degradation increased with increasing impact velocity, and was greater in a partially supported configuration than in a fully supported one. For the fully supported configuration, frontal contact stress played a major role in generating composite damage, while for the partially supported case both frontal contact and backside flexure stresses were the combined sources of damage generation. The oxide/oxide composite was able to survive high energy (∼1.3 J) impacts without complete structural failure. The degree of relative post-impact strength degradation of the oxide/oxide composite was similar to that of an advanced SiC/SiC composite observed from a previous study, regardless of the type of specimen support. Like the SiC/SiC composite, impact-damage tolerance was greater in the oxide/oxide than in monolithic silicon nitride ceramics for impact velocities >300 m/s.

Abstract:
The microstructural and mechanical stabilities of a Nextel 720 (alumina+mullite) fiber-reinforced, alumina matrix composite were evaluated following exposure of the material to a high H2O pressure (to simulate a gas turbine combustor environment) in Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) high temperature, high pressure facility (Keiser Rigs). Coupons were exposed at 1135°C and 1200°C in a high-pressure (10 atm) furnace containing 10% water vapor for 1000, 2000, and 3000 h. Extensive microstructural characterization was conducted after each exposure to evaluate fiber and matrix stabilities as a function of exposure time and temperature. Retained tensile strengths were also measured and compared to baseline properties following each exposure. It was found that there was no significant change in the composite microstructure or tensile strength after long-term exposure in the Keiser Rig at 1135°C, whereas significant Nextel 720 fiber degradation (grain growth and increased surface roughness) occurred during exposure for 3000 h at 1200°C. Statistical variations in the mean strength values between the as-processed and exposed composites indicated little change in strength, however. The composite degradation was primarily thermal and the addition of H2O had little effect on changing or accelerating these effects.

Abstract:
Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) are an attractive class of materials for gas turbine hot section applications. The oxide fiber reinforcement and inherent matrix porosity contributes to favorable fracture toughness and thereby enhanced resistance against impact by foreign objects. Also, the oxide composition ensures superior environmental resistance against accelerated attack by corrosive species in the gas turbine hot section and resulting surface recession typically observed in silicon-based ceramic monolithic and composite materials. Under a program sponsored by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) a hybrid oxide/oxide CMC system has been developed with potential application for stationary gas turbine hot section components. COI Ceramics, Inc. has fabricated subscale and full scale combustor liners which have been evaluated in rig and engine testing at Solar, and in field testing in a Solar Centaur® 50S engine at a commercial end user site. Following the conclusion of the NIST program in June 2003 the engine field testing is being continued under a Solar-led program sponsored by the US Dept. of Energy (DOE). As of November 2004, a hybrid oxide/oxide CMC outer combustor liner has accumulated 12,582 field test hours with 63 starts and an extensive material experience base has been developed. The paper will summarize the progress to-date for this hybrid CMC combustor liner development and demonstration, including selected fabrication approach, NDE, and rig/engine test experience.
