Abstract:
This study analyzes the stress distribution of 3D elastoplastic contact problems by using the FE parametric quadratic programming (PQP) method derived from a 3D FE model based on parametric variational principle (PVP). We numerically analyze a 24-blade compressor by combining centrifugal loading with interference-fit one. To accelerate computation, calculation is simplified by structural modeling via multisubstructuring, aiming to deal with FE-simulated computer aided design (CAD) conveniently. We then analyze the relationships between the maximum residual stresses of the compressor posterior to prestressing and overspeed rpms, and we also study the distribution and magnitude of the contact stresses of the compressor in working conditions after overspeed prestressing. Moreover, we thoroughly discuss the distribution and magnitude of the contact stresses of shaft-shaft sleeve-impeller in working conditions. Relative displacement can be prevented and contact stress can be kept uniform due to the nonuniform initial amount of interference in overspeed prestressing. This paper summarizes the FEM simulation results and provides reference data for improving the design and processing of compressor impellers, indicating that overspeed is indispensable in manufacture.

Abstract:
Overspeed is a training method used to improve running speed, although its effects are not supported by consensual scientific evidence. The overspeed stimulus can be boosted by several methods, including motorized towing devices. Our objectives were to analyze the acute effects of three overspeed loads in young athletes and to select optimal loads for training periods. Eight young athletes (16.73 ± 1.69 years) performed one unassisted sprint and three assisted sprints, and kinematic and biomechanical data were compared. Significant increases (p < 0.05) in step velocity and step length were found with 2, 4, and 5.25 kg in maximum running speed, flight time and horizontal distance from the first contact to the vertical projection of the center of mass with 4 and 5.25 kg. Significant time decreases were found in 5 m flying sprint and contact time with 4 and 5.25 kg, and no significant changes were observed in step rate. The individually recommended loads would be between 3.47 ± 0.68% and 6.94 ± 1.35% body weight. Even having limitations, we can understand this work and its results as a pilot study to replicate the methodology and the use of new devices to more broadly investigate the effects of overspeed.

Abstract:
Overspeed is more likely to occur in the process of load rejection or large disturbances for nuclear steam turbines due to the large parameter range and low steam parameters, as well as the power of the low-pressure cylinder accounting for a high proportion of the total power. It is of great significance to study the overspeed characteristics of nuclear power plants (NPPs) to ensure the safe and stable operation of the unit and power grid. According to the characteristics of NPPs, the overspeed protection model and the super-acceleration protection model were established, which were added to the speed-governing system model. The response characteristics of the reactor, thermal system, steam turbine and speed-governing system in the process of load rejection or large disturbances of the power grid were analyzed and simulated. The results were compared using the simulation software personal computer transient analyzer (PCTRAN). The simulation results showed that quickly closing both the high and medium pressure regulating valves could effectively realize frequency control when load rejection or a large grid disturbance occurred. The over-acceleration protection cooperates with the super-acceleration protection to avoid the repeated opening/closing of the valves due to overspeed protection. This could effectively reduce the impact of large disturbances on the reactor, thermal system, and turbine.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine the effects of overspeed or overload plyometric training on jump height and lifting velocity in resistance trained females without plyometric training experience. Fifty-six participants (age: 21.2±1.7 years; body mass: 65.1±8.2 kg; height: 168.0±5.9 cm) were randomly allocated to either an overspeed (n=18), overload (n=18), or passive control (n=16) group. The two training groups completed 18.7±1.7 sessions consisting of three different plyometric exercises with overspeed or overload over eight weeks. Apart from the external loading, the two training modalities were identical. Following the training period, the changes in the recorded variables were not significantly different from those in the control group, nor did the training groups differ from each other. The training groups improved peak and average lifting velocity in the 40 and 60% of body mass loading conditions (9.50–33.37%, p=<0.001–0.038), whereas only the average lifting velocity improved in the 80% of body mass loading condition (OS: 14.47%, p<0.001 and OL: 23.13%, p<0.001). No significant changes occurred in the control group (9.18–13.55%, P=0.062–0.980). Overspeed and overload plyometric training may be viable methods for improving lifting velocity, but not squat jump height, in a population without plyometric training experience.

A double-plunger type overspeed protection mechanism has excellent performance in turbine overspeed protection, but the complicated operating principle thereof makes long-term use difficult. In this study, a dynamic model is established to explain the relationship between the motion state and the force situation. Through the analysis of the dynamic model, the specific process of the linked plunger for achieving overspeed protection with tripping action is determined, and the motion law of the inner and outer plungers is clarified. Additionally, the complete solution method and calculation procedure for the tripping speed of the submerged plunger are established, and the specific process for solving the relevant equations with numerical iteration is clarified. Finally, a rigid-flexible coupling virtual prototype model is established, which validates the conclusion that initial eccentric distance and spring stiffness are key factors affecting tripping speed and the motion process of inner and outer plungers.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, an integrated approach to turbine overspeed analysis is presented, taking into account the secondary air system dynamics and mechanical friction in a turbine assembly following an unlocated high-pressure shaft failure. The axial load acting on the rotating turbine assembly is a governing parameter in terms of overspeed protection since it governs the level of mechanical friction which acts against the turbine acceleration due to gas torque. The axial load is dependent on both the force coming from secondary air system cavities surrounding the disc and the force on the rotor blades. It is highly affected by secondary air system dynamics because rotor movement modifies the geometry of seals and flow paths within the network. As a result, the primary parameters of interest in this study are the axial load on the turbine rotor, the friction torque between rotating and static structures and the axial position of the rotor.Following an initial review of potential damage scenarios, several cases are run to establish the effect of each damage scenario and variable parameter within the model, with comparisons being made to a baseline case in which no interactions are modelled. This allows important aspects of the secondary air system to be identified in terms of overspeed prevention, as well as guidelines on design changes in current and future networks that will be beneficial for overspeed prevention.

The performance of a 5-m diameter Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine was predicted using both a double multiple streamtube model and a two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computational fluid dynamics simulation with constant rotational speed for a series of operational points. The actual performance was measured in both fixed and variable pitch modes. The aims were (1) to compare starting torque and peak efficiency in fixed and variable pitch modes and (2) to test an overspeed control mechanism. Starting torque was approximately three times higher in variable pitch mode and the maximum efficiency on some runs was significantly higher. The overspeed control mechanism functioned consistently as designed. Thus, variable pitch was shown to overcome two major disadvantages of normal fixed pitch vertical axis wind turbines, self-starting and overspeed control. Discrepancies between the predicted and measured results showed the importance of accurately assessing parasitic drag losses and the need for three-dimensional simulation to give reliable performance predictions.

Abstract:
Employed in tidal turbines, overspeed power regulation (OSPR) can improve the structural robustness and decrease the complexity associated with active pitch methods, while removing the diffculties of operating in stalled flow. This may be a method by which the cost of tidal energy can be brought down. The aim of this research was to investigate the OSPR method, increase understanding of associated benefits and constraints, and develop a methodology for the design of suitable blades. It is identified that: the challenges to OSPR are higher rotational velocities, leading to increased voltage levels, an increased chance of cavitation on the rotor, and potentially detrimental thrust forces; these challenges may be best overcome with blade design alterations limiting the maximum rotational velocity. The blade design methodology uses a design platform to set boundary conditions, an existing blade design as the base case, and a blade element momentum theory (BEMT) tool as the modelling method. Blade root pitch setting, twist and chord length distribution are the variable parameters investigated. A set of ospr performance metrics and a design space sensitivity analysis, with whole-blade cavitation analyses and diagnostic plots of torque and angle of attack, are used to ascertain how function-based and then precise blade design alterations affect rotor performance. Tow tank tests defined base case rotor performance and verified the BEMT tool. Tests on the new blades allowed comparison to the base case test performance and to the BEMT prediction. Simulations showed that the new blade design regulated power without cavitation inception, without an increase in the thrust forces and with only a 3.6% drop in efficiency - as per the set boundary conditions and design requirements. The blade design methodology can be used to overcome challenges associated with overspeed and produce blades which give significant performance improvements for use in OSPR.

Les générateurs de gaz sont communément employés pour motoriser des avions ou des hélicoptères et réalisent toujours les étapes de compression-combustion-détente. En régime nominal, les gaz brulés font tourner la turbine qui entraîne le compresseur par le biais de l’arbre moteur. Il arrive que certaines des pièces de l’arbre subissent une défaillance qui ne garantit plus l’assemblage des étages turbine et compresseur. Par conséquence, la turbine entre en configuration libre et amorçe une accélération non-contrôlée qui peut mener à son éclatement. Il s’avère que dans les moteurs d’hélicoptère, la turbine subit un blocage sans effets dangereux. Une analyse de ces moteurs a révélé l’émergence de contacts rotor-stator intenses au niveau du joint labyrinthe de la turbine avec une forte élévation de température. Cette thèse est motivée par le besoin de prédire le transitoire de vitesse de rotation du rotor. Bien que la littérature soit fournie au sujet des la dynamique des rotors en présence de contact unilatéral frottant, la combinaison de la réponse dynamique avec une vitesse de rotation inconnue et le couplage thermomécanique restent un sujet à explorer. Les présents travaux proposent de résoudre le problème thermomécanique dans le domaine temporel en respectant strictement des contraintes de contact via les multiplicateurs de Lagrange. Les algorithmes de contact sont réécrits pour s’adapter au système fortement non-linéaire à cause des effets gyroscopiques. Cette thèse propose des modèles enrichis progressivement afin d’inclure les physiques principales et une discrétisation spatiale par éléments finis. Afin de réduire les temps de calculs, les modèles éléments finis thermomécaniques sont réduits avec les méthodes appropriées. Les méthodes de résolution ont été comparées et ont montré des résultats concordants avec la littérature. De plus, pour un jeu de paramètres judicieusement choisis, la survitesse peut être limitée. Il a même été possible de prédire une réponse en précession inverse, qui est connue pour engendrer des efforts et vibrations très élevés. Des difficultés à identifier le moment de déclenchement cette instabilité ont été rencontrés mais corrigés en introduisant de la flexibilité au système. Enfin, la vitesse de rotation élevée conjointe aux efforts de contact importants provoque une forte génération de chaleur aux points de contact telle que la température de fusion est atteinte en cours de simulation
Gas generators are commonly used to power airplanes and helicopters and always perform the compression-combustion-expansion stages. The burnt gases drive the turbine which, in turn, powers the compressor though the rotorshaft. Occasionally, some parts of the shaft may fail so that the turbine and compressor stages are no longer coupled. As a result, the turbine may enter a freewheeling configuration and initiate an uncontrolled acceleration leading to the disc burst. In helicopter engines, the turbine undergoes a seizure without hazardous effects. An analysis of these engines revealed the emergence of intense rotor-stator rub within the labyrinth seal and sharp rise in temperature. The present thesis is motivated by the need to predict the rotor speed transient accurately. Although the literature is extensive about rotordynamics accounting for unilateral contact occurrences with friction, the combination of the dynamic response with unknown rotational speed and thermomechanical coupling remains a topic to be explored.The present work proposes to solve the thermomechanical problem in the time domain by strictly respecting contact conditions through Lagrange multipliers. The solution algorithms are rewritten to fit the highly non-linear system due to gyroscopic effects. This doctoral research presents models progressively enriched with physics of interest. In order to reduce the computation time, reduction methods are applied to finite elements models accordingly. The resolution methods were compared and showed results in line with the literature. It turned out that overspeed could be limited for a carefully chosen set of parameters. It was even possible to predict a response in dry whip, which is known to generate very high stress and vibration levels. Difficulties in identifying the moment of triggering were encountered, but tackled by introducing flexibility into the system. Finally, the high rotation speed combined with the high contact forces resulted in high heat generation at the contact interface, to the point that melting temperature was reached during simulation

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study describes a process used to determine critical success factors that are felt to be predictive of timely completion of projects within Kumba Resources. A comprehensive literature review and the knowledge of full time line and project managers who have had experience with projects were used to generate critical success factors that was felt to be crucial to timely completion of projects within Kumba Resources. Eleven items were discovered within Kumba Resources that relate well to the available literature on the subject. These were the personal skills of the project manager, project management skills, overly optimistic estimates to obtain project approval, organisational culture, vague and conflicting scope definition, no proper project planning, project control and visibility, no proper risk management communication management not up to standard, changes to orders and contracts took longer than planned and delays caused by poor project integration. In addition, these eleven items have been reduced to six factors with the use of factor analysis. The six factors found were (1) Organisational culture, (2) Technology management, (3) Contract management, (4) Autocratic behaviour, (5) Project design and development and (6) Role clarification. Of these six factors, only technology management proofed to be well managed within Kumba Resources. This study has provided the basis for developing an intervention through which the performance on project management within Kumba Resources will be improved.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie beskryf die proses wat gevolg is om die kritieke suksesfaktore vir tydige voltooiïng van projekte binne Kumba Resources uit te lig. 'n Omvattende literatuurstudie en die kennis van voltydse projekbestuurders en lynbestuurders, wat ondervinding in projekbestuur het, is gebruik om die vraelys saam te stel. Hieruit is die kritieke suksesfaktore vir tydige voltooiïng van projekte binne Kumba Resources geïdentifiseer. Elf items het na vore gekom uit die studie wat baie goed vergelyk met die literatuur beskikbaar. Die elf items gevind in Kumba Resources is die persoonlike vaardighede van die projekbestuurder, die projekbestuur vaardighede van die projekbestuurder, oor optimistiese beramings om projekgoedkeuring te verkry, organisasie kultuur, 'n vaag of swak definisie van die omvang wat die projek behels, geen ordentlike risiko analises word gedoen, die bestuur van kommunikasie is nie op standaard nie, veranderings aan kontrakte en bestellings neem langer as beplan en vertragings word veroorsaak deur swak bestuur van projekintegrasie. Com a implementação deste projeto, a empresa visa criar um standard para todas as iniciativas de formação e desenvolvimento dentro da empresa, com um maior foco nos seus técnicos de enchimento. Para que tal fosse possível, procedeu-se inicialmente a uma avaliação das necessidades de formação, quer ao nível das tarefas a desempenhar e competências esperadas de um técnico de enchimento, quer no que diz respeito às competências que estes possuíam antes de se dar início às formações. Com o auxílio de uma ferramenta denominada por "matriz de competências", esta fase permitiu avaliar as maiores lacunas ao nível de conhecimentos dos formandos e consequentemente priorizar a aplicação das formações. Posteriormente, foi desenvolvida e implementada até ao momento uma formação em conceitos lean, com o apoio de diversas ferramentas para a maximização da sua eficácia. Many technical papers describe turbocharger turbine/compressor failures caused by foreign object damage, contaminated lube oil, lack of lubrication, high exhaust temperatures, low cycle fatigue, or overspeed. However, High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) is a potential failure mode that has not been widely assessed. This paper describes steps to investigate an HCF fatigue failure of a turbine blade. Metallurgical analysis determined that the failure surfaces are indicative of fatigue and that the initiation location coincided with the location of maximum stress as identified by finite element modal analysis. High Cycle Fatigue was identified as the root cause of the failures. Finite element based modal analysis indicates that the turbine blade could quickly fail if the turbocharger is operated at one of several resonant speeds since turbine blade resonances occur at very frequencies. HCF analysis with combined modal and stress analyses coupled with a high altitude engine test using the candidate turbocharger is recommended for the new turbocharger to ensure high reliability of the compressor and turbine from an HCF perspective.

Torque indicating issues continue to plague Power Turbine Modules (PTMs) as a top reason for return. These issues can be linked to failed torque and overspeed sensors and PTM torque reference shaft issues including; sticking shafts due to torque stiction and sheared pins connecting PTM drive shafts to torque reference shafts. At the end of the PTM shaft is the pinning hardware for the torque reference shaft. In shipping and during handling of the PTM damage can occur causing the pin to shear and fail. They can fail due to inadvertent contact with the PTM or torque shaft, during shipping and handling, or after prolonged usage. Defining a reliable inspection procedure to make the determination that the PTM shaft is faulty prior to ‘on wing’ installation can save time and money for the operator. In addition, the repair procedure for sheared pin is to replace pinning hardware at Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD) machine shop. During the repining of the hardware the holes must be located a minimum distance from each other to preserve the integrity of PT shaft and aft insert parent metal according to the Depot Maintenance Work Requirement manual. In the presence of machine shop error, failing to maintain the minimum distance between pin holes prevents viable PT shafts from use in production. Identifying a process improvement for repair procedures of pin hardware at the machine shop can save time and money invested in overhauled PT shafts for the depot.

In electric power generation facilities, steam turbine disk rupture due to overspeed can produce high-energy projectiles that may penetrate the turbine casing and damage other plant systems. While such projectiles could seriously damage a fossil fired plant, the risks are even greater for nuclear plants where a projectile could strike safety related systems. Plant maintenance personnel routinely test overspeed protection systems according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule, but such tests require interruptions in normal steady state operation, and sometimes lead to undesirable events such as reactor SCRAMs. This risk evaluation of steam turbine destructive overspeed for nuclear power generation units reexamines the probability of an overspeed protection system failure, with the goal of optimizing maintenance practices and providing a basis for overspeed trip system testing intervals. Industry reliability databases and plant maintenance records are utilized to develop component and system failure probabilities and models that account for the impact of condition monitoring and periodic testing on overspeed protection system availability.

A load rejection disconnects the generator from the electrical grid. The resulting power excess accelerates the turbo set. Reacting to the load rejection, the turbine governor rapidly closes the steam admission valves. The remaining entrapped steam expands, thereby continuing to power the turbine. Thus the turbine speed rises till a dynamic equilibrium of accelerating and braking forces is reached. Thereafter the turbine speed decreases. If the maximally attained turbine speed remains below the trip threshold, immediate re-synchronization to the electrical grid is possible. Consequently, a forced outage of the steam turbine can be avoided and operational reliability is increased. Furthermore, functional safety requirements demand that the maximum turbine speed remains below test speed under all failure conditions. Accordingly, steam turbine design has to account for the impact of overspeed for a reliable and safe operation of the turbo set. In order to manage load rejection requirements for steam turbine operation, the design engineer applies standard rules and overspeed calculation methods. These rules limit standardized overspeed estimation by defining maximum steam volumes, valve closing times, and I&C reaction times, as well as type and number of non-return valves. A more thorough turbine overspeed investigation is necessary for several reasons, such as to evaluate this behavior under undesired failure conditions e.g. failure of non-return valves or blocking of control valves. A second justification for this investigation would be to predict changes resulting from turbine modifications — e.g. turbine upgrade or change at I&C systems. In this paper, basic and advanced overspeed calculation tools are illustrated and compared, with respect to required effort as well as accuracy of prediction. It is shown how system parameters which are most sensitive with respect to overspeed can be identified and their influence assessed. Thus, firstly it is already possible to identify and improve critical overspeed behavior during design. Secondly, the impact of particular failures can be accurately predicted, thus allowing for due implementation of appropriate counter measures. The methods, presented in this paper, were developed by the authors and their predecessors at SIEMENS AG for large steam turbo sets with a power range between 100 MW and 1500 MW.

Abstract In turbomachinery applications the possibility to reduce size and costs of main flow-path components, by increasing shaft rotating speed, has always been appealing. The technological challenge in increasing this power density capability is typically related to performance prediction, to operating stress in blades and shafts, as well as to the need for a more accurate rotor-dynamic analysis. Yet another aspect, often reduced to standard assessments in less demanding applications, is related to the analysis of overspeed scenarios where, following a sudden loss of load and/or driven inertia, the turbomachine shall maintain its mechanical integrity. Especially in steam turbines applications, where the behavior of the machine is strongly affected by the plant conditions, valves intervention time and connected volumes, the reduction of the rotor inertia, against comparable power, may produce overspeed scenarios that can become a primary design constraint and, if overlooked, may have both availability and safety implications. In this paper several approaches to the analysis of overspeed scenarios are discussed, with increasing level of detail. The energy-based overspeed analysis method, as required by API612, is first discussed against practical design cases. A more accurate dynamic model is then presented, and its results compared with those of the energy-based approach. Finally, the sensitivity analysis of the overspeed peak value with respect to critical design parameters is discussed. With respect to previous works, mostly based on load rejection scenarios, the main focus is on the scenario of sudden coupling loss.
