Abstract:
Abstract The Sculptor of the Overman and the Dithyrambic Artist: Michelangelo and Wagner in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. This paper draws on the work of Mazzino Montinari in order to explore the relations between Nietzsche’s image of Michelangelo and specific elements of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. These elements concern the idea of the overman and the figure which is sleeping in the stone. A biography of Michelangelo by the art historian Herman Grimm, a correspondent of Ralph Waldo Emerson, may be the source of Nietzsche’s reference to a mysterious statue described in the chapter “Of Those who are Sublime”. Moreover, Jacob Burckhardt’s Cicerone may help to explain the relationship between Wagner and the sculptor. One way to understand the context of this image is to return to the fourth Untimely Meditation - Richard Wagner in Bayreuth - in which Nietzsche portrays Wagner as both a sculptor and a dithyrambic artist. Some years later Zarathustra/Nietzsche will himself appear as the sculptor of the overman and as the authentic dithyrambic poet, that is the authentic “musician of the future”.

Abstract:
A presente resenha retrata a obra de Steven Overman, denominada “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Sport: How Calvinism and Capitalism Shaped America’s Games”.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In two previous papers, Ozcakir, Tanveer, Hall, & Overman (2016, Travelling waves in pipe flow, J. Fluid Mech., 791, 284–328) and Ozcakir, Hall & Tanveer (2019, Nonlinear exact coherent structures in pipe flow and their instabilities, J. Fluid Mech., 868, 341–368) investigated numerically and asymptotically high Reynolds number exact coherent structures in pipe flow. It was found that, in addition to the structures described by the vortex–wave interaction theory by Hall & Smith (1991, On strongly nonlinear vortex/wave interactions in boundary layer transition. J. Fluid Mech., 227, 641–666), there exists vortical structures localized near the centre of the pipe with a core of size $O(Re^{-1/4})$ convected downstream at a speed that deviates from the pipe centreline speed by $O(Re^{-1/2})$, where $Re$ is the Reynolds number. In the finite Reynolds number calculations by Ozcakir, Tanveer, Hall & Overman (2016, Travelling waves in pipe flow, J. Fluid Mech., 791, 284–328), asymptotic state was referred to as a nonlinear viscous core state (NVC). However the reduced asymptotic equations were not solved and only limited confirmation of the theory was found numerically. Here, in order to conclusively confirm the existence of the NVC state we first describe direct numerical calculations on the asymptotically reduced $Re>>1$ equations for such state states. The results are then compared in detail to the finite $Re$ calculations up-to $Re=10^6$; the latter regime is at much higher values of the Reynolds number than those reported in Ozcakir, Tanveer, Hall & Overman (2016, Travelling waves in pipe flow, J. Fluid Mech., 791, 284–328). The results are found to be in excellent agreement with the finite $Re$ calculations in a region between $Re=10^5$ and $10^6$, thereby confirming that the structure observed by Ozcakir, Tanveer, Hall & Overman (2016, Travelling waves in pipe flow, J. Fluid Mech., 791, 284–328) is indeed a finite Reynolds number realization of an asymptotic NVC state.

Abstract:
SummaryThis article challenges the militant and industrial unionist version of British coal mining trade union history, surrounding the Miners' Federation of Great Britain and the National Union of Mineworkers, by considering, for the first time, the case of the colliery deputies' trade union. Their national Federation was formed in 1910, and aimed to represent the three branches of coal mining supervisory management: the deputy (or fireman, or examiner), overman and shotfirer. First, the article discusses the treatment of moderate and craft traditions in British coal mining historiography. Second, it shows how the position of deputy was defined by changes in the underground labour process and the legal regulation of the industry. Third, it traces the history of deputies' union organization up until nationalization in 1947, and the formation of the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS). The article concludes that the deputies represent a mainstream tradition of craft/professional identity and industrial moderation, in both the coal industry and the wider labour movement.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Tempest is the only play in the Shakespearean canon that is open to a purely “Americanist” reading. Although Prospero’s island is located somewhere in the Mediterranean, numerous critics claimed that it deals with the New World (Hulme & Sherman 2000: 171). The paper revisits the existing interpretations, focusing on the turbulent relationship between Prospero and other inhabitants of the island: Caliban, Miranda, and Ariel. In the article I propose a rereading of their relation in the spirit of Friedrich Nietzsche’s perspectivism, utilising Nietzsche’s key philosophical concepts like the Apollonian/Dionysian elements and der Übermensch (the overman). In his vast canon, Nietzsche refers to Native Americans only once and in passing. However, his call for the revaluation of all values seems to be an apt point of departure for a discussion on early colonial relations. Nietzsche’s perspectivism enables to reread both the early colonial encounters and character relations on Shakespeare’s island. Hence, in an attempt at a “combined analysis”, the paper looks at Prospero as the potential overman and also offers a reading of the English source texts that document early encounters between the English and native inhabitants of North America (Walter Raleigh, Richard Hakluyt, Thomas Harriot, Robert Gray).
