Abstract:
Seismic design loads for tunnels are characterized in terms of the deformations imposed on the structure by surrounding ground. The free-field ground deformations due to a seismic event are estimated, and the tunnel is designed to accommodate these deformations. Vertically propagating shear waves are the predominant form of earthquake loading that causes the ovaling deformations of circular tunnels to develop, resulting in a distortion of the cross sectional shape of the tunnel lining. In this paper, seismic behavior of circular tunnels has been investigated due to propagation of shear waves in the vertical direction using quasi-static analytical approaches as well as numerical methods. Analytical approaches are based on the closed-form solutions which compute the forces in the lining due to equivalent static ovaling deformations, while the numerical method carries out dynamic, nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis. Based on comparisons made, the accuracy and reliability of the analytical solutions are evaluated and discussed. The results show that the axial forces determined using the analytical approaches are in acceptable agreement with numerical analysis results, while the computed bending moments are less comparable and show significant discrepancies. The differences between the analytical approaches are also investigated and addressed.

Abstract:
Carburization and quenching of steels in general has been and continues to be an important commercial manufacturing process for steel components. The minimization of distortion, cracking, and residual stresses are major issues that need to be properly understood in order to efficiently produce high quality components. To assist process engineers in understanding the effect process parameters have on these major issues, a numerical study was conducted on an automotive transmission ring gear. The ring gear has substantial ovaling distortion, which cannot always be straightened within the design tolerances of the part thereby leading to a 3–5 percent rejection rate. The purpose of this report is to predict the distortions, microstructural phase changes, residual stresses, and hardness that occur during quenching using finite element techniques. The ABAQUS model from the NCMS Heat Treatment Prediction Program was used to perform the simulations. This report describes a two-dimensional simulation of the gear blank with the wall thinned where the teeth would have been located to represent the proper thermal mass. The gear blank geometry is essentially the same as the gear geometry without the teeth; moreover it has the same dimensions exhibited by the gear. Even though the ovaling caused by distortion is a three-dimensional problem the two-dimensional representation was chosen as an initial step before simulating the more complex three-dimensional gear geometry. The symmetry of the blank can be exploited by allowing fewer elements to be used for the finite element analysis which in turn will decrease the simulation times of the problem. Abstract:
Dynamic behavior of underground structures is controlled by the strain field imposed by wave propagation and by the interaction between rock mass and structures. Shear and pressure waves propagating in the plane of the cross-section of the tunnel generate ground distortions, which tend to cause ovaling deformations of the lining. In this paper, the seismic response of a circular tunnel subjected respectively to shear waves and pressure waves will be analyzed both analytically and numerically at first, and then a complete 3D analysis will be given to show the overall effects on a tunnel induced by seismic events considering seismic inputs in three directions.

Abstract:
Many underground structures have witnessed great damage in recent earthquakes. Thus underground structures in earthquake prone zones should be designed to withstand both static overburden loads and earthquake loads. In this paper, different closed form solutions for the analysis of the tunnel response, are considered as developed on the basis of the theory that the stress increment due to seismic loading can be assessed through a correct estimate of free-field deformation, while the internal forces of tunnel linings subjected to overburden loads can also be estimated through an assumption of far-field stress using the developed solutions. Numerical studies have been performed to validate the available analytical solutions.

Abstract:
During a severe accident, buckling of a steel containment hatch door, large deformation and ovaling of the hatch sleeve are potential causes of mismatch at the sealing surface which can result in a leakage path. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis of a typical steel containment/sleeve/hatch assembly that includes containment stiffeners, pretensioned swing bolts, and hatch door geometric imperfection is presented. The analysis was carried out to the nonlinear range up to large strains. The results indicated that the buckling load occurs at pressure, far above that which causes gross yielding of the shell plate. Although buckling of the hatch door increased the relative motions of the hatch sleeve and the hatch door, the motions remained sufficiently small to prevent leakage.

Abstract:
Closed-form solutions are of great interest for quick and accurate evaluation of stresses and displacements around underground excavations. Dynamic effects on underground structures have often been neglected based on the assumption that their response to earthquake loading is relatively safe as compared to that of surface structures. Nevertheless, several examples of recorded damage to underground structures for which seismic forces were not considered in the original design. Therefore, during the seismic excitement, tunnels are basically subjected to three kinds of deformation : axial compression and extension, longitudinal bending and ovaling or racking. In the present investigation a series of numerical analyses under the influence of soil hardness parameters based on no-slip between soil and tunnel lining were performed, using finite element code PLAXIS, and outputs were compared with result of analytical solutions.

Master thesis analyzes rotary draw bending of the tubes without using a mandrel. Bending process is accompanied by many defects due to large displacement of formed material. One of the major defects is flattering of the cross section also called ovality. In order to decrease ovality comes up a proposal of the changes to the tool design. Modifications of tool’s geometry are numerically analyzed by finite element method in software ANSYS. According to the results of the simulations an optimized pressure die is manufactured. Several experimental tests are accomplished to verify the effect of the optimized tool design. Approximately 100 bends confirm a decrease of ovality using modified pressure die.

Abstract:
Torsional properties of a solid, linearly elastic, and isotropic bar with the cross section in the shape of an ovaline were investigated. An ovaline is a variant of an ellipse defined by the parametric equations: x = a(1 + αcos²λ)cosλ, and y = b(1 + βsin²λ)sinλ. Only ovalines with a smooth, aerodynamic type of cross section under St. Venant torsion were considered. The torsional properties of interest included the maximum shear stress component, the maximum shear stress magnitude and the torsional stiffness. The results from twenty-eight finite element models were correlated to several candidate solutions for each of the torsional properties based on variances of the classical elliptical solution. Correction factors are provided where appropriate. The recommended methods of solution provide highly accurate results for the class of ovalines considered in a fraction of the time required to obtain results via the finite element method.

Abstract:
One of the important parameters observed during extruded fibre fabrication is its diameter. The diameter can be measured with a single scanning camera assuming that the fibre section has a circular shape. As proved in practice, another important parameter is ovality, that is the rate of fibre flattening. This paper assumes that the fibre section shape is elliptical. In such a case, at least three different views on examined fibre are needed. Mathematical part of this paper is concerned with analytical description of fibre ovality measurement using two different approaches based on the knowledge of linear algebra, projective geometry and conic sections theory. Main goal of this paper is thus to use both mathematical theory and image analysis methods for ovality and diameter determination. Precise calcluation of such quantities is, however, conditioned on precise camera system calibration, which is described in the paper as well. Additionally, the work contains a brief mention of technical realization of ovality measurement and its possible difficulties.

Abstract:
Ocean acidification is one of the biggest challenges happening in the marine environment and causes a shift in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and lowers the seawater pH. This causes negative impacts on many marine organisms and thus affecting the ecosystem. However, the effect of increasing CO2 concentration dissolved in the ocean can potentially be beneficial to the growth of seagrass. This effect was examined on the seagrass Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook f., the dominant seagrass species found in Swan-Canning Estuary, Western Australia. This study was done with controlled experiments, using CO2-enrichment as a simulation of ocean acidification. The seagrass was collected and cultured in the laboratory for 15 days while pH and alkalinity of seawater and photochemical efficiency (Fv /Fm) of the seagrass were monitored. Chlorophyll content, growth (shoot plastochrone interval, leaf and rhizome elongation) and biomass productivity of the plants were measured at the end of the experiment. The seagrass was collected in early and mid-winter for two experiment replicates and a strong seasonal variation was observed. A diurnal pattern was found in pH for both CO2-enriched and control aquaria, showing a buffering effect by seagrass photosynthesis. Significant differences were found in the DIC concentrations with decreasing pCO2 and increasing HCO3- concentrations in the first experiment but opposite results found in the second experiment. The healthier seagrass in the first experiment showed a decreasing photochemical efficiency over time while the seagrass in the second experiment showed an increasing photochemical efficiency potentially due to the recovery from storm stress and epiphyte load. Significantly higher biomass productivity was found in the seagrass from the CO2-enriched aquaria of the first experiment but not in the second. It was difficult to determine whether the increase in biomass productivity was caused by the addition of CO2 or the seagrass reproduction. It is suggested that more replicates and long term experiments are needed to study the relationship between seagrass productivity and seasonality along with the effect of increasing dissolved CO2 in seawater. Field experiments are also needed in the future to explore the potential of using seagrass in buffering the effect of ocean acidification which might help the broader marine community at an ecosystem level to survive the ongoing environmental changes.

Abstract:
Circadian clocks enable coordination of essential biological and metabolic processes in relation to the 24-hour light cycle. However, there are many habitats that are not subject to this light cycle, such as the deep sea, arctic regions, and cave systems. This study analyzes the circadian pattern of isolated populations of a subterranean spider, Meta ovalis from two Tennessee caves and five Indiana caves. Locomotor activity was recorded with TriKinetics LAM50 Locomotor Activity Monitor under a 12-hour light (L), 12-hour dark (D) (LD 12:12) cycle preceding total darkness (DD). Significant differences were found within and among populations found in Tennessee cave systems in average free running period and onset of locomotor activity. Selection, drift, and genetic fixation are explored as the causes of variation in the present study, using M. ovalis as the model organism. All five caves in Indiana show little variation, whereas both Tennessee caves show large interindividual variation.

Abstract:
Circadian clocks are endogenous time keeping mechanisms that are ubiquitous among animals. They enable coordination of many essential biological and metabolic processes in relation to the 24 hour light cycle on earth. However, there are many habitats on earth that are not subject to this light cycle. This study aims to look at the potential genetic drift of the circadian rhythm of a subterranean spider, Meta ovalis, as well as gathering general natural history information on this under-studied spider. This study will fill general gaps in knowledge of this spider and its habitat, highlight the importance of studying organisms within a subterranean environment, and place importance on cave conservation and acquiring knowledge of these specialized, and sensitive species. This study integrates circadian and foraging theory to evaluate species as circadian specialists and generalists based on how narrowly or widely their activity is spread over the 24 h cycle. We suggest that M. ovalis benefits from a generalist strategy, showing small bursts of focused activity widely dispersed across the 24 h cycle, allowing it to capture prey opportunistically whenever it is available. Live spiders were collected from area caves, monitored in an environment controlled for light and temperature, and returned to their cave of origin. The activity of each spider was analyzed for differences in circadian activity among and between populations to determine if there is a significant drift of the circadian strategy between isolated populations of Meta ovalis. We expect to see a different circadian strategy implemented between populations due to drift from the spiders being isolated from other populations.

Abstract:

When a thin walled cylindrical liquid storage tank suffers a large seismic base excitation, buckling phenomena such as elephant foot bulge at the bottom portion and nonlinear ovaling vibration at the upper portion shows nonlinearity between the input and response level and suddenly occurs for the excessive input level, thus will be called as “nonlinear ovaling vibration” hereafter in this paper, may be caused. In the 1st report, the elephant foot bulge phenomena and the liquid pressure effects were investigated. In this 2nd report of the series of studies, the effect of nonlinear ovaling vibration phenomena were investigated based on the dynamic buckling tests using scaled models of thin walled cylindrical liquid storage tanks for nuclear power plants. The mechanism and the effect of vertical excitation and liquid sloshing were also studied and discussed.

Abstract:
The authors have proposed an analytical model by which they can simulate the experimental results of a piping system with full circumferential 48% thinning at an elbow or two elbows. A series of elasto-plastic analyses has been carried out in order to investigate the experimental behavior of the piping system. Dynamic analyses describe the ratcheting behavior and the average amplitude of the opening-closing displacement at elbows relatively well. And then static analyses describe ratcheting and ovaling of the cross section of pipes fairy well.

Abstract:
For nuclear power plant life extension projects, safety related buried steel pipelines need to be assessed for the effects of postulated accidental impact loads. Examples of such pipelines include emergency firewater lines and control room vent ducts. Published solutions concerning the buried pipeline beneath a surface impact, often aim at a generic problem dealing with a pipe within a half space. The interface between the buried pipes and the underground structure is often ignored. In the case that a buried steel pipe penetrates into nearby underground structure in short distance from a surface impact, shear and bending may originate from reactions at pipe-structure interface, in addition to ovaling and buckling of the pipe section. Neglecting such boundary effect may lead to underestimating potential damage of buried pipeline, and jeopardizing the safety of the nuclear power plant. Comprehensive analysis of such structure-pipe-soil system is often subjected to availability of state-of-art finite element tools, as well as costly and time consuming. This study presents a simplified approach using basic concepts, in order to evaluate the buried pipeline beneath a heavy surface impact considering nearby pipe-structure interface. Applied impulse loadings for postulated surface impact are first established, followed by the evaluation of consequential vertical pressure directly on the top of the pipeline. The pipe cross-section is checked for ovaling and buckling. The closed form solution is then proposed to evaluate effect of pipe-structure interface.

Abstract:
A series of finite element analyses has been carried out in order to investigate the failure behaviors of degraded bent pipes with local thinning against seismic loading. The sensitivity of such parameters as the residual thickness, locations and width of the local thinning to the failure modes such as ovaling and local buckling and to the low cycle fatigue damage has been studied. It has been found that this approach is useful to make a reasonable experimental plan, which has to be carried out under the condition of limited cost and limited period.

Full text
Abstract:
Large-scale cylindrical water storage tanks have a large ratio of radius to thickness, which means their thickness is relatively thin compared with the radius. Regarding seismic responses, the deformation of a tank frame is significantly influenced by the sloshing of the water inside the tank and by the bulging vibration of the tank structure, therefore it is important to consider such deformation theoretically and experimentally. This paper describes the results of a vibration test with a 1/10 reduced scale model of a large-scale industrial cylindrical water storage tank, conducted particularly to clarify the dynamic behavior of the tank during a seismic excitation. First a sinusoidal wave excitation experiment was performed for the scale model tank, which measured axial distributions of dynamic fluid pressures, strains and accelerations. Ovaling vibration of the scale model tank also was examined by measuring the circumferential distribution of strains. Furthermore, the dependence of dynamic fluid pressure on the acceleration magnitude of the input excitation was investigated. Secondly, a seismic excitation experiment was conducted using typical seismic waves. Finally, the measuring results were compared with the values calculated using common seismic-proof design methods based on the Housner method or velocity potential theory and the finite element method. Considering the differences between the experiment values and numerical design ones, it became obvious that there was inconsistent between the positive and the negative pressures of the dynamic fluid pressure and that the dynamic fluid pressure was dependent on the acceleration magnitude. And it was suggested that such phenomena were caused by ovaling vibration. They, however, had little effect on the seismic-proof design of the tank in the range of acceleration used in this study.

Full text
Abstract:
Diesel fuel oil storage tanks are critical components for safety of nuclear power plants. Proper functioning of the emergency diesel generators during an earthquake depends on the fuel oil supplied from the storage tank. Failure of the tank, nozzles or fuel pipes can result in contamination and/or leakage of the fuel. The allowable stress limits and design charts for above ground tanks, which are provided in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for a pressure vessel, are occasionally adopted in the design of underground tanks. However, the analytical methodology for evaluation of stresses in the buried tanks requires detailed analysis different from that for a typical pressure vessel. Soil-structure and fluid-structure interaction effects need to be considered in the analysis for simulation of the actual static and seismic loads. Therefore, advanced simulation techniques and finite element analysis tools have been used by several researchers to evaluate buried tanks. Simple, but acceptably accurate techniques for comprehensive evaluation of underground storage tanks have not been established. This study presents simplified evaluation techniques for a diesel fuel storage tank using fundamental concepts. The diesel fuel oil storage tanks considered here are cylindrical and oriented with their axes in the horizontal direction. The static overburden and seismic pressures cause ovaling of the tank and generate significant bending stresses, which are not addressed in the pressure vessel design approach. The simplified tank evaluation proposed here includes the ovaling effect under static overburden, seismic and sloshing loads. Earthquake induced stresses in hoop and longitudinal directions are calculated using the free field approach and the classical Housner Method is employed in the sloshing analysis. Allowable stress and buckling of the tank wall are checked against corresponding criteria.

Abstract:
In this paper, the dynamic stability of a thin cylindrical shell subjected to axial leakage flow is discussed. In this paper, the third part of a study of the axial leakage flow-induced vibration of a thin cylindrical shell, we focus on circumferential vibration, that is, the ovaling vibration of a shell. The coupled equations of motion between shell and liquid are obtained by using Donnell’s shell theory and the Navier-Stokes equation. The added mass, added damping and added stiffness in the coupled equations of motion are described by utilizing the unsteady fluid pressure acting on the shell. The relations between axial velocity and the unstable vibration phenomena are clarified concerning the circumferential vibration of a shell. Numerical parametric studies are done for various dimensions of a shell and an axial leakage flow.

Abstract:
Elbows are used frequently in pipeline systems. Manufacturing of elbows tends to cause the primary circular sections to ovalize. Ovalization intensifies when elbows are subjected to internal hoop pressure. The total ovality in elbows comprises both manufacturing and pressurization ovality. Elbows with oval cross sections under internal pressure tend to straighten. This effect is called the Bourdon Effect. If these effects are not taken into consideration, unanticipated deformations and higher stress levels could be present at the location of elbows. The Canadian oil and gas pipeline code (CSA Z662-11) has limited the ovality in elbows to 3 and 6 percent for progressive and non-progressive ovalizations, respectively. A mere imposition of two limits cannot determine the safety factor of pipeline. Also, consequences of using elbows with large ovality remain ambiguous as well. Understanding the influence of the Bourdon Effect and ovalization on the elbow design parameters is required. In this paper, the influence of the Bourdon Effect on the stress and ovalization developed in the elbows are investigated. Four Nominal Pipe Sizes (12, 24, 36, and 42) are selected. Elbows and straight pipe segments connected to them are analyzed using Finite Element Analysis. Geometric dimensions of actual scanned pipeline elbows are used to represent the actual situation in the field. Under the operating pressure, the maximum stress, ovality, and the Bourdon Effect in elbows for different elbow thicknesses and straight pipe lengths connected to the elbows are monitored. In addition, in this paper, the effect of the initial ovality was investigated for NPS 24 with constant straight pipe length. It was shown that the increase or decrease in the final ovality of the pipe is dependent on the initial ovality of the elbow cross section.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates field ovalization measurements of NPS 24 pipe using 3D continuum finite element analyses. The combination of the soil backfill weight and loose bedding material beneath the pipe near a tie-in concentrates stresses at the location where native undisturbed soil transitions to loose backfill along the trench bottom, which increases the ovality in the pipe cross section. The analysis indicated that at burial depth, transient surface loading temporarily increases the ovality in unpressurized pipe but the ovality is reduced to near normal levels when the transient surface loading is removed. The internal pressure reduces the elastic pipe ovality. This analysis method can be useful for a cost benefit analysis between using thicker pipe, versus the additional costs, such as intervention and/or padding/compacting of soil around the pipe (with inspections).
