Abstract:
AbstractThis essay looks at Richard White's 2017 survey of the Gilded Age, The Republic for Which It Stands, in relation to other recent histories of the period. The Republic is filled with seemingly endless examples of corruption, personal venality, individual stupidity, ideological rigidity, and even good intentions gone awry. A vast and broad cast of Americans—some well-known, some more obscure—dash across the pages. But in White's republic, the changes are in the details rather than the narrative arc. Consequently, and in marked contrast to the other Gilded Age histories considered here, White's Gilded Age is neither optimistic nor tragic. Instead, it is fatalistic, a Gilded Age for our time.

Abstract:
Duress results from the internalization of violence. Through the narratives of two Central African Republic student refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this article presents the multiple layers of violence they experience. After introducing violence, the article turns to its different layers by making use of the palimpsest metaphor. Three layers of violence interrelate and overlap: the first relates to chronic crisis in the Central African Republic; the second layer deals with the context of the urban jungle (Kinshasa); and the third layer is linked to the humanitarian agencies that fail to provide for urban refugees. The experience of these three layers adds up to duress. Duress colors the students’ agency and the decisions they make along their life paths.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing from archival research, this article explores Thomas Jefferson’s understanding of property and his embrace of a political community defined by communal sharing. Tracing the evolution of Jefferson’s view on property holdings from the Anglo-Saxons to the American colonies to his speculative vision of ward republics, this paper argues that fears concerning economic and property inequities in the early republic compelled the principal author of the Declaration of Independence to endorse small, communal experiments. Importantly, this reading of Jefferson problematizes strict liberal or republican interpretations of his thought, further calling into question the philosophical heritage of the American republic. By evaluating personal letters from 1804 to 1824, this article offers an alternative reading of Jefferson, one that carefully showcases his wholly original, compelling, and radical democratic thinking. The significance of this heterodox interpretation has far-reaching implications on our understanding of the foundational principles of the early republic as well as how we address the issue of economic inequality in the modern-day United States.

Abstract:
The interview covers the diplomatic career of Hossam Eldeen Aly, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Ukraine. The Ambassador shares his experience of diplomatic activities in other countries and the difficulties he faced while working in the realm of diplomacy. According to the Ambassador, one of the priorities of the team of the diplomatic mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Ukraine is to maintain good and mutually beneficial bilateral relations in the realms of economy, culture, tourism, and industry. The Ambassador singles out two promising ways for cooperation. The first one is trade. Trade statistics indicate that Egypt is the key partner for Ukraine in Africa and in the Middle East. Thus, many Egyptian goods of high quality are poised to enter the Ukrainian market. These are high competitive goods that favorably influence the economies of the two states and allow the parties to expand their future cooperation in this domain. Another potential way to broaden collaboration is tourism. From this perspective, Ukraine is one of the main partners of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The Ambassador hopes the direct flights between the capitals of the two states will contribute to the increase in the number of tourists and expansion of travel destinations throughout Egypt. The Ambassador worries about activities of terrorist units at the regional level in different parts of the world that also take place in Egypt. The Arab Republic takes counter-terrorist measures in every possible way in order to free the country from this threat. The Ambassador stresses that Ukrainians and Egyptians have similar mindset and likewise strive for a better future. Bilateral cooperation, in particular the desire to ensure welfare for the peoples of Ukraine and Egypt, will boost the spheres for cooperation between the two states. Keywords: Egypt, counter-terrorism, bilateral cooperation, economic relations of Egypt and Ukraine, tourism, Ukraine.

Abstract:
The return of the Florentine republic (1527–30) ushered in a tense period of political upheaval. As the city faced an imperial siege and bouts of famine and plague, the government promoted a vibrant spiritual program to combat dangers to its independence. The motet flourished within this environment, but the connections between this repertory and civic life in early sixteenth-century Florence have yet to be fully explored. Since the mid-twentieth century, music historians have examined Florentine manuscript sources of the motet (the Newberry Partbooks and Vallicelliana Partbooks) and have articulated various arguments for the political significance of these collections and the individual pieces they contain. Viewed as a whole, however, the repertory does not typically express partisan support for the Medici or the republic. One underlying thread tying many of these motets together is their function within ritual celebrations, particularly in uniting the community in prayer for collective relief. Philippe Verdelot’s wartime Congregati sunt inimici nostri exemplifies the multiple performance uses of motets in Florentine ritual contexts. Its compositional design and content reveal how Florentines turned to the motet to demonstrate communal solidarity and to seek divine aid in times of crisis.

Abstract:
Monarchy – Global. Monarchical Self-Assertion in a Republican World In 1793, the French republic saw the guillotining of two royal heads. In 1934, Winston Churchill spoke of the «holocaust of crowns» within his lifetime. Today, the British Queen presides over the Commonwealth, which comprises mostly republics. At the same time, there have been calls a return of the kings to republics with respect to Africa. How is this astonishing self-assertion of the institutional monarchy to be explained, and why has the antagonism between the monarchy and the republic disappeared? This will be discussed in a paper through a global perspective. Churchill was convinced: «No institution pays such dividends as the monarchy. » What dividends were earned, and for whom? What has the global presence of European states meant for the institution of the monarchy in Europe, in imperial spaces, and in decolonisation? In order to be able to analyse this issue, our study questions the legitimacy which had been both accorded to and claimed by the institution monarchy. Does monarchical legitimacy differ in Europe, Asia and Africa? Why did monarchies survived while other states and empires were created and then destroyed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? The study places three areas in the center of our consideration: the role of the monarchy as the emotional center of the nation and the empire; monarchy as a polycentric rule; and lastly, monarchy as the institutionalisation of permanence in change. Finally, the study will discuss how a comparative assessment and review of the performances by the monarchy and the republic might look.

Abstract Introduction: Prematurely fused metopic suture results in developmental anomaly named trigonocephaly. The treatment of trigonocephaly is a surgical reconstruction, starting from the simple suturectomy toward the complicated cranial vault reconstructions with aim to obtain enough endocranial space for normal development of the brain and aesthetic correction as well. The aim: The aim of our paper is to present our experience on this pathology in the Republic of Macedonia, stressing the trigonocephaly as one of the rare forms of craniosynostosis. Our material: During a period of 20 years (from 1996 to 2015) at the Pediatric department of the Clinic for Neurosurgery in Skopje, we observed 18 babies with trigonocephaly, including one with Carpenter syndrome and trigonocephaly, 14 males and 4 females. All children had simple trigonocephaly, one had syndromic trigonocephaly (Carpenter’s syndrome). According to Oi and Matsumoto classification done in 19865 severe trigonocephaly is observed in 11 cases and, moderate trigonocephaly in 7 cases. Our method: Our treatment consisted of slightly modified Di Rocco’s3 surgical procedure named “shell” operation, adding transposition of the “bone flap”. Results: The postoperative period was uneventful except for the expected forehead swelling. The babies were discharged from the hospital on average at the 8th postoperative day. At the three months control after the surgery, the head had excellent aesthetic appearance, with regular psychomotor development according to the age of the patient (Fig 3а and 3b). We had no serious complications except the expected postoperative swelling of the forehead. All operated children had excellent “long term” aesthetic effect and normal psychomotor development. Conclusion: The early recognition of these anomalies including all craniosynostoses, the deformities of the newborn and infant’s head and the preventive operative reconstruction would prevent abnormal disturbance of the psychomotor development during the child’s growth. The multidisciplinary approach can prevent new disabled individuals in the society. Our technique allows shortening the entire surgical procedure, especially in the departments where blood saving devices are not available.

Abstract:
After Azerbaijan gained independence, the existing economic ties between the allied republics disappeared, there was a deficit in the markets and access to foreign markets became impossible. As a result, large industrial enterprises, factories, collective farms and state farms ceased operations. In the current situation, the problem of mass unemployment has a special place. As a result, especially young people were forced to leave the country in search of work and turned to Russia and other countries. As a way out of this situation, socially oriented state programs have been developed in the country since 2000, and serious and urgent work is being done to address the problem of unemployment. As a result, it was possible to solve the problem of unemployment in Azerbaijan and provide the population with appropriate jobs. The measures taken have reduced the unemployment rate in Azerbaijan four times compared to the 1990s, ie from twenty to five percent. Many jobs have been created in the country and a large part of the population has been provided with jobs. Keywords: government programs, events, youth, employment, mass unemployment

Abstract:
This paper seeks to analyze the nature of the German minorities in the Czech Republic and Poland. In order to achieve this goal, the relationship between Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic and Poland with the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany/FRG) forms an essential intellectual backdrop to our main theme. Reference to the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic/GDR) will be made as and where appropriate. As we shall see, tensions simmered between the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (Socialist Unity Party of Germany/SED) and the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza Zjednoczona (Polish United Workers' Party/PZPR), and in reality relations between the two sides were poor. Reference will be made to wartime German occupation policy in both Poland and the Czech lands. Due attention will also be paid to the consequent expulsion of ethnic Germans from Poland and Czechoslovakia. However, due to limitations of space these themes, that have been exhaustively dealt with elsewhere, do not form part of our main focus of study.

Abstract:
Several commentators since Aristotle have sought to convince us that Plato’s discussion of political constitutions or politeiai in Republic 8 is full of problems. In effect, such commentators argue that Plato’s account is not all that helpful in our efforts to understand political life. This paper argues that, despite several objections to Plato’s discussion of political constitutions in Republic 8, there is much that is helpful for thinking about political life. The following issues are taken up in an effort to clarify Plato’s account of regimes: the role of such an account in the main ethical argument of the dialogue (that justice is better than injustice); whether Plato’s discussion has both an a priori perspective and one based on experience; the analogy of the city and the soul and whether this holds together in Republic 8; Plato’s depiction of regime change in temporal/historical terms; and the fact that the account of political regimes seems incomplete because each regime is presented in the manner of a sketch.

Abstract:
Introduction. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is the most common hereditary tumor syndrome (frequency of its occurrence in the world is 1 : 3000 of the population). The main clinical manifestations of the disease are multiple café-au-lait macules on the skin and neurofibromas, skeletal abnormalities and cognitive deficits. The disease is based on mutations in the oncosuppressor gene NF1. This disease is characterized by significant clinical polymorphism of manifestations, even among members of the same family. No geno-phenotypic correlations were found for NF1. Therefore, it is assumed that modifier genes are the cause of the varying expressiveness of the disease. Materials and methods. Clinical-epidemiological and molecular-genetic research of patients with NF1 in the Republic of Bashkortostan (RB) was carried out. Sequencing was used to search for intragenic mutations in 57 exons of the NF1 gene. Microsatellite analysis was used to detect the deletion of the entire gene.Results. The frequency of occurrence of NF1 in RB was 1 : 10153 of the population. Analysis of the clinical manifestations of NF1 in RB patients showed a lower incidence of brain cysts in patients born in mixed marriages, which indicates the protective role of mestization. In patients with NF1 who inherited the disease from the mother, a more frequent development of skeletal anomalies and facial dysmorphism was determined. We identified 1 deletion of the entire NF1 gene in 1 patient and 14 intragenic mutations (c.205-1G>C, с.1278G>A, c.1369_1370insGGGTC, с.1570G>A, с.1973_1974delTC, c.2806A>T, с.2991-1G>C, c.3158C>G, с.3526_3528delAGA, с.3826delC, с.4514+5G>A, с.4537С>Т, c.5758_5761delTTGA, с.6792С>A) in 20 patients with NF1. We determined the random distribution of the types of mutations and did not reveal the specific features of the NF1 clinic depending on the type of mutations.Conclusions. The protective role of crossbreeding in relation to brain cysts, as well as the predominance of skeletal anomalies in patients with NF1 inheritance from the mother, indicate the role of modifier genes in the pathogenesis of the disease. The identified mutations in the NF1 gene will allow us to perform prenatal prevention of NF1 in RB patients.

Abstract:
Water quality and water supply system in our country are primarily related to inadequate environment management in 1990s, due to poor economic situation in the country and insufficient investments. With a view to improve conditions of environment, strategic documents at various levels have been adopted. One of these, water-supply basis for Serbia 2002-2012, was adopted by Government of the Republic of Serbia in 2002, which defined basic strategy for water management. Law on Environment Protection (2004) provides basis and possibility of further applicability of EU directions complying with respective standards. Apparent trend in this field is tendency of setting up certain standards for each purpose (Council Directive 75/440/EEC, Council Directive 76/160/EEC) as well as for some types of water systems (rivers, lakes, ground waters). Our paper presents the most important regulations of the Republic Serbia and EU in the field of water quality management, control of water quality in our country, monitoring, that would, followed by adequate information system, contribute to quality improvement of ambient and drinking waters.

Abstract:
Abstract This article addresses the topic of reading in the course of life. Its point of departure is the oral-history research carried out between 2009 and 2015 among 138 narrators (informants, respondents, interviewees) across the Czech Republic. The author presents its background, parameters as well as one of its general achievements-four moments of initiations on an axis of our reading life. The first of these takes the form of sociability (being accepted); the second-autonomy (mastering the skill); the third- maturity (being independent), the fourth-reflection (mirroring). What follows from this is the finding that reading undergoes continual development, whether a long continuity or a meandering chain of partial discontinuities. Thus, our oral history-based research shows that being open to the lifetime span provides us with a specific sensitivity towards reading, stressing mainly the fact of its being rooted in particular time-conditioned, life-motivated and purposive situations.

Abstract:
There are no differences between the Czech and Slovak governments’ views on the forms of the future coexistence and relations between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. Our positions are literally identical.Vladimir Meciar, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic (August 1990)Since our democratic revolution, the situation [in relations between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic] has never been as serious and precipitous as it is today.Vaclav Havel, President of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic (September 1991)On 9 June 1992 came the shattering announcement by newly elected Czech Republic Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus, that the Czechoslovak federation was no more. An interim (but trimmed) federal government was to be set up to preside over the hasty dismantlement of the 74-year old state. By 30 September, the Czechoslovak Republic was to be completely split in two. And by January 1993, the finances of state are supposed to be completely divided.

If you would reflect that the part of the soul that in the former case, in our own misfortunes, was forcibly restrained, and that has hungered for tears and a good cry and satisfaction, because it is its nature to desire these things, is the element in us that the poets satisfy and delight, and that the best element in our nature, since it has never been properly educated by reason or even by habit, then relaxes its guard over the plaintive part, inasmuch as this is contemplating the woes of others and it is no shame to it to praise and pity another who, claiming to be a good man, abandons himself to excess in his grief; but [he] thinks this vicarious pleasure is so much clear gain, and would not consent to forfeit it by disdaining the poem altogether.

Abstract:
Powdery mildews on the Asteraceae family were surveyed during 2007–2015 in the Czech Republic with the aim to increase our knowledge about occurrence, morphological characteristics and host specificity of powdery mildews on this family. In total, 32 host species with symptoms of powdery mildew were collected, and the fungal species were identified based on microscopic observations. These showed great variability in their morphological characteristics. Our study confirmed the high host specificity of powdery mildew species to their original hosts. A deeper knowledge of the taxonomy of the Asteraceae has brought substantial changes in the delimitation of powdery mildew species. In particular, delimitation of the three varieties of Golovinomyces asterum was studied and discussed.

Abstract:
The German state propaganda service Deutche Welle (DW), recently published a new anti-Serb war manifesto, also reported by the daily press in the Republic of Croatia. The aim of the document, whose basic ideas do not belong to the person interviewed, is the creation of conditions which would favor the breakout of a new Balkan war, primarily in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the dissolution of the Republic of Serbia, treated incorrectly in the text as the "spoils of war" of Serbia. The purpose of the text is the weakening of the geopolitical position of Serbia through the following: 1) the severing of ties with the Serb population living in former Yugoslav republics (B&H, Montenegro); 2) the accepting of an unfavorable institutional solution for the Republic of Srpska through amendments to the Dayton-Paris peace agreement, whose guarantor is Serbia, as the successor of the FRY and Serbia & Montenegro; 3) the accepting of an unfavorable institutional solution for AP Kosovo and Metohija, whose status, until otherwise changed, is determined by Resolution 1244 of the UN Security Council; 4) the dragging of Serbia into North Atlantic integrations despite continued objections of Serbs to the idea and its proclaimed policy of military neutrality; 5) the breaking up of friendly relations and close cooperation of the Republic of Serbia with the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China, which would cost our country the loss of the ability to defend almost all its vital state interests, including its territorial integrity and sovereignty, aside from losing the friendship of those who have in various situations come to our country's aid. According to the originator of this anti-Serb war manifesto, coerced, humiliated, and punished (unjustly), Serbia and the Serbs have the right to expect European integrations.

Abstract:
Sociological research shows that there is intolerance towards migrants staying in Russian society. Moreover, Russian citizens express the highest level of negativism in relation to representatives of the North Caucasus, that is, citizens of our country who come to work in its other regions. Also, the representations of migrants themselves about the local residents in host societies remain unexplored. In the article, based on the theory of contact, an attempt is made to study the migratory experience of migrants from the Republic of Dagestan who are leaving for work in the capital (direct contact) and their social environment in places of permanent residence (extended contact), as well as the role of direct and indirect migration experience in the formation representations of rural residents of the republic about Moscow and Muscovites. Residents of the republic who did not have migration experience were considered as a control group. The study used quantitative and qualitative methods – questioning respondents who had never been to Moscow and in-depth interviews with labor migrants. It was found that extended contact with Muscovites does not have a significant effect on the changes in their perceptions about the descendants of rural areas of the Republic of Dagestan, their social environment of migrants and other residents of the villages under study. Also, a comparative analysis of the formation of representations of migrants and rural residents of the two North Caucasian republics – Chechnya and Dagestan. There are significant differences in the regions studied, connected, in our opinion, with the frequency of contacts with the Russian population in the places where migrants live.

Abstract:
The author of the article analyzes the state of the indigent (poor) population of the Republic of Dagestan. The problem is very urgent in the modern period of crisis in our society due to the fact that poverty is the reason for intensification of social contradictions in it, degradation of the population, and complication of the demographic situation. The author of the article presents statistical data on average per capita income of the population of the Dagestan Republic in 2002 - 2013. Since the interval distribution of incomes does not allow to characterize accurately the number of the indigent part of the population, the distribution of income according to the minimum subsistence level is considered. A significant poverty reduction in the Republic of Dagestan during the period under consideration is shown. Besides, the article presents the median per capita income, which is used in western countries and in some republics of the former Soviet Union to estimate the level of poverty. Depending on 40%, 50%, 60% of the median, like in these countries, the relative number of the indigent population in the Republic of Dagestan and in other regions of the North Caucasian Federal District is determined, which makes it possible to determine the level of extreme poverty in the Republic of Dagestan in 2013. The author shows the ratio of the average wage of 10% of employees with the highest wage to 10% of employees with the lowest wage in the institutions of the subjects of the Russian Federation in the North Caucasian Federal District and comes to the conclusion that in 2013 the poverty level in the region was lower than in the Republic of Dagestan.

Abstract:
AbstractBoth white and Chinese American suffragists in the United States closely watched and discussed the events of the Chinese Revolution of 1911 and the establishment of the Chinese Republic (1912–1949). They were aware of the republican revolutionaries’ support for women's rights, which conflicted with American stereotypes of China as a backward nation, especially in its treatment of women. Chinese suffragists, real and imagined, became a major talking point in debates over women's voting rights in the United States as white suffragists and national newspapers championed their stories. This led to prominent visual depictions of Chinese suffragists in the press, but also their participation in public events such as suffrage parades. For a brief time, the transnational nature of suffrage conversations was highly visible as was the suffrage activism of women in U.S. Chinese communities. However, because Chinese immigrants were barred from citizenship by U.S. immigration law, white activists tended to depict Chinese suffragists as foreign, resulting in the erasure of their memory in the U.S. suffrage movement.

Abstract:
Nationally representative anaemia levels among women and children were recently determined in conjunction with the Demographic and Health Surveys in Kazakstan (1995), Uzbekistan (1996), and the Kyrgyz Republic (1997). Anaemia was assessed by measuring the haemoglobin level in capillary blood of women aged 15 to 49 and their children under the age of 3 using the photometric Hemocue technique. The numbers of women tested were 3,658, 4,333, and 3,760 in Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, respectively. All three Central Asian republics had a high prevalence of anaemia. The highest overall rates were in the regions of Kazakstan and Uzbekistan near the Aral Sea, which are characterized by severe agrochemical pollution and other environmental and socio-economic problems. Approximately half (49%) of the women in Kazakstan, 60% of the women in Uzbekistan, and 40% of the women in the Kyrgyz Republic suffered from some degree of anaemia. Mild anaemia (haemoglobin level, 10.0–11.9 g/dl; 10.0–10.9 g/dl for pregnant women) was diagnosed in 37%, 45%, and 28% of the women in Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, respectively. Eleven percent of the women in Kazakstan, 14% in Uzbekistan, and 9% in the Kyrgyz Republic had moderate anaemia (haemoglobin level 7.0–9.9 g/dl). Severe anaemia (haemoglobin level less than 7.0 g/dl) was found among 1% of the women in all three Central Asian republics. In Kazakstan, 69% of the children under the age of three suffered from some degree of anaemia. About the same number of children had mild (30%) and moderate (34%) anaemia. A smaller, but substantial, proportion of children (5%) were severely anaemic. In Uzbekistan and the Kyrgyz Republic, 61% and 50% of children, respectively, suffered from anaemia. The percentages of children with mild, moderate, and severe anaemia were 34%, 26%, and 1%, respectively, for Uzbekistan, and 24%, 24%, and 1%, respectively, for the Kyrgyz Republic. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that negative iron balance is probably a major cause of anaemia among both women and children in Central Asia. Our findings provide important information for the development of health intervention programmes to prevent iron-deficiency anaemia among women of certain ethnic, educational, and residential groups in this region. Based on the results of the Demographic and Health Survey as well as other geographically focused studies, the UNICEF Area Office for the Central Asian Republics and Kazakstan proposed an integrated strategy of education, supplementation, fortification, and research to address the problem and called for donors' support. It is expected that this approach can considerably improve maternal and child health in Central Asia.

Abstract:
This article is devoted to studying the сontemporary women’s unions history of formation as well as functioning in a single region of the Russian Federation — the Republic of Khakassia. At the same time, special attention is devoted to those whose activities in the sociopolitical and cultural life of the Republic, from our point of view, are currently most noticeable. The analysis of women’s public organizations activities in this region has shown that the women’s movement in Post-Soviet Khakassia over the past quarter of a century, despite all the difficulties of formation and development, can be characterized as a significant phenomenon in the life of the Republic. Today the vast majority of them, like before, have obvious social and humanitarian orientation. Despite the fact that almost all women’s societies currently operating in the territory of this region have their own political slogans, their main activity is still limited to helping the needy and socially vulnerable. However, the lack of efficiency and effectiveness of women’s associations is largely due to their lack of integrity and lack of unanimity of actions. In addition, the level of involvement of the Republic’s residents in women’s movements and their socio-professional composition leaves much to be desired. According to our research, the vast majority of women, mainly residents of rural areas, unfortunately, do not take any part in the social life of the region. The empirical base of the study is built upon official statistics obtained from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of National and Territorial Policy of the Republic of Khakassia, as well as materials stored in the archives of local women’s organizations. Besides, the results of our interviews with the leaders and most active participants of these associations have been particularly valuable.

372 sera of cervids from the Czech Republic were examined for antibodies to the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus (BDV) by competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and for the presence of the BVDV by AgELISA. Antibodies to BVDV/BDV were found in 0.6% (two positive/305 tested) red deer (<I>Cervus elaphus</I>). BVDV/BDV antibodies were not found in four sika deer (<I>Cervus Nippon</I>) and 63 fallow deer (<I>Dama dama</I>). All serum samples were BVDV antigen negative. Our results confirmed that red deer in the Czech Republic are only rarely infected with Pestiviruses. This was the first survey of pestiviruses in farmed and wild cervids in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to determine the features that characterize the domestic rural tourists in the Czech Republic and separate them into groups. In order to fulfill this goal, an inquiry survey and statistical analysis of obtained data were realized. The results verified our hypothesis that the demand is different for different type of tourists and we were able to define 3 types of tourists: traditional, active, and passive. The passive tourists search mainly for tranquillity and rest, in our research mainly older people preferring longer stays. The traditional tourists favour visiting of natural and cultural landmarks. The active tourists are interesting in various types of activities, mainly in sports and social events. They are younger and they like shorter more frequent vacations. Based on our findings, we deduced some general recommendation to the rural tourism operators. The passive and traditional tourists are claiming for undamaged nature, calm and authentic environment, respectively existence of natural or cultural monuments. These external conditions can hardly be crucially changed to improve the touristic business. The active tourists can be attracted by additional services even in places with less favourable conditions. The providers without favourable natural condition can improve fruitfulness of their business by offering active spending of leisure time.

AbstractInland transport in European Union is facing difficult but fundamental goals to achieve. Most of them are more accurately described in the White Paper on the future of Europe. By signing the Treaty of Lisbon, every European country is obligated to fulfil the legislation of the European Parliament. The main document dealing with the transport issue and ecological aspect of transport is the White Paper, which serves as a fundamental document for establishing the legislation and standards. The European Parliament legislation must be implemented in the national legislation including e. g. regulations, decisions or recommendations of the European Parliament. The legislation based on the White Paper is closely focused on transport and the related ecological aspect. Conclusions of this document lead decisions of EU to take serious actions in many different sectors. The transport sector has a significant impact on our environment and the future of the European Union. The current main goal of transport sector is to achieve reduction in emitting pollutants in our environment, and smoothly transfer to renewable sources of energy or at least trying to minimize the resources per transport performance unit.

In 1993, a documentary film titled Sarı Zeybek, which narrates the last days of Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, appeared on a private TV channel in Turkey. Having roused considerable interest, the film reappeared on screens a few more times and later was made into a video. Can Dündar, the producer of the film, writes:When I was a child, I could not understand why the statues of Atatürk were put so high, that as I tried to stare at them, my neck would start to hurt. I could not know why he would always appear alone in his pictures …. Atatürk was a statue far away and a lonely picture …. With this film, in which we narrate his last 300 days, this statue came down to earth. We could touch him …. We loved not the tough hero of poems, but this emotional man whose eyes would fill with tears as he watched the celebrations of the Republic from his window. Unfortunately, they have not introduced us to this man in schools. Sarı Zeybek is a brave step for this late introduction [on the back cover of the tape].
