ASANTE, Eric Adom. "Dual work roles : the joint effect of hybrid entrepreneurs’ regulatory focus and wage work to entrepreneurial work enrichment on entrepreneurial performance." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2018. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/otd/34.

Full text
Abstract:
Hybrid entrepreneurial is phenomenal but remains under-studied in the management literature. This paper investigated the joint influence of hybrid entrepreneurs’ trait regulatory focus and wage work to entrepreneurial work enrichment (WE enrichment) on their entrepreneurial engagement and the subsequent proficient, adaptive, and proactive performance in entrepreneurial work. I first interviewed 16 hybrid entrepreneurs to obtain the understanding of their reasons for being in hybrid entrepreneurship, their regulatory focus tendencies, and the resources they transfer from wage work to entrepreneurial work. To validate the measurement scales of promotion and prevention focus, I conducted a pilot study among 66 hybrid entrepreneurs. Then, I conducted a multi-source questionnaire survey among 329 hybrid entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial partners in Ghana. The final sample included 272 completed and matched responses. I used structural equation modeling of Mplus 7.4 to test the hypothesized model. Results of the questionnaire survey provided strong support to my hypothesized model. Promotion focus and prevention focus had positive and negative relationships with these three types of entrepreneurial performance, respectively. I also found that the opposite relationships of promotion focus and prevention focus with these three types of entrepreneurial performance were mediated by entrepreneurial engagement. Furthermore, hybrid entrepreneurs work across the wage-work and entrepreneurial roles, and I found that WE enrichment played a moderating role. Specifically, WE enrichment strengthened the positive relationship between promotion focus and entrepreneurial engagement as well as the positive indirect relationships between promotion focus and the three types of entrepreneurial performance through entrepreneurial engagement. In contrast, WE enrichment weakened the negative relationship between prevention focus and entrepreneurial engagement as well as the negative indirect relationships between prevention focus and the three types of entrepreneurial performance through entrepreneurial engagement. This research sheds light on how personality traits and dual-work context affect hybrid entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial processes and performance outcomes. Thus, I provide theoretical implications for the literature of hybrid entrepreneurial and dual work roles. Further, this research offers important practical implications for hybrid entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial partners, as well as investors.

VICHETH, Pisey. "The impact of South-South FDI : knowledge spillovers from Chinese FDI to local firms in the Cambodian light manufacturing industries." Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2018. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/otd/33.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of the extent to which incoming FDI results in ‘spillovers’ (technology, R&D, management practices and know-how) has so far yielded only mixed results, and research has largely been restricted to north-north and north-south interactions; this study develops a model of knowledge spillovers based on previous literature and extends inquiry into south-south FDI by investigating spillovers from Chinese FDI to the Cambodian garment and light manufacturing industries. Several significant factors including the nature and extent of FDI linkages, local industry absorptive capacity, nature of the network relationship, and local firms’ learning orientation have been found to influence the extent to which knowledge spillovers occur. These variables are integrated within this paper which develops a conceptual model of knowledge spillovers based on the Awareness-Motivation- Capability framework to examine knowledge spillovers derived through both horizontal and vertical linkages. One area of interest examined in the study is the FDI influence on domestic firms’ export performance since light manufacturing represents the most significant portion of Cambodia's total export products. The thesis, addresses two primary questions: (1) when, where and under what conditions are significant knowledge spillovers created? And (2) what are the effects of the spillovers on domestic companies' technological capability and export performance? The research contributes to the previous literature by further developing the theory on the realisation of knowledge spillovers as well as exploring the nature and channels of knowledge spillovers from South-South FDI in labour-intensive industry, an area of study previously unexplored. Our results show that knowledge spillovers occur through both horizontal and vertical linkages and Cambodian firms receive more spillovers from Chinese FDI than they do from FDI from developed countries.

Bos, Sunè. "Performance : it's in our nature." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/53350.

Full text
Abstract:
Botanic gardens have always been about plants. The design of botanic gardens offers a unique window into how we humans have used and valued plants over the past several centuries. Man s relationship with, and attitude towards nature has been directly influenced by the economical, social and environmental conditions that prevailed during that era. This in turn has greatly influenced the way landscape design, and in turn botanical garden design, has been approached and shaped throughout the centuries as well as how man experiences the landscape and plants specifically. It became evident that man has the habit to submit control over nature, by pruning and shaping nature to be confined by manicured borders or edges. Whether these borders are created to form a romantic picture of nature or whether it is to perform certain ecological functions for the environment, these borders have the inherent ability to limit the potential of nature to grow on intuition and dampen its ability to perform as the living, changing, dynamic entity that it is. The design of most botanical gardens, including the design of the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, tend to comply with this idea of control over nature. This dissertation investigates the relationship between people and plants, as well as people and the landscape, within the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, and focus on the redesign of a part thereof by using the regional landscape as the link between them. This new design is approached in a way that celebrates the extraordinary qualities of plants without limiting the potential of plants to perform in its own unique way. This was done by first looking at current theories in the landscape architectural profession on how to design with change as the medium, and second to find inspiration on designing the change and movement of a living entity (nature) and the way to guide this performance, through another performance art: dance. The landscape design of the botanical garden challenges the way we interact with nature in a landscape in order to restore the interrelationships among plants, animals and humans and clearly communicate to the audience the fact that nature is alive, flexible and changing. It also shows that nature shouldn't be submitted to full control, and that this flexibility of nature is one of its greatest assets.

Nguyen, Pham Hoanh Son. "Reexamen de la relation internationalisation - performance : une analyse tridimensionnelle." Lyon 3, 2010. https://scd-resnum.univ-lyon3.fr/out/theses/2010_out_nguyen_phs.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to determine the nature of the relationship between internationalization and performance (RIP) of firm, subject debated for forty years without conclusive response. To achieve this, we develop a three-dimensional approach with two phases : analytical and interactive analysis. In the first, we focus on the degree of internationalization and the individual impact of each dimension of internationalization to determine the nature of the "parts" of the RIP. In the second, we focus on the process of internationalization and the interactive impact of three dimensions - breadth, depth, dispersion - of internationalization to determine the nature of the "whole" of the RIP. This research, based on a sample of 69 French international enterprises over the period 2001-2007, clarifies the nature of the RIP by providing the following new empirical and theoretical elements: (i) Each dimension of internationalization maintains a curvilinear and three-stage relationship with performance; (ii) The nature of the RIP is mainly governed by the nature of the relationship between the depth of internationalization and performance, thus being curvilinear, with three phases and forming a horizontal S; (iii) The horizontal S-curve relationship between internationalization and performance is moderated by the breadth and the dispersion of internationalization; (iv) The process of internationalization explain firm performance better than the degree of internationalization

Foster, Dennis Geoffrey. "Individual performance in management buy-out teams." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.365979.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to study individual team members performances within a context determined by the culture of the top MBO team and the organisational system. In order to achieve this objective the study also investigates and describes the relevant business factors/outcomes which determine the structure/culture of MBOs as a context for individual team members to interpret. A review of MBO, team, team working, culture, climate and motivation theory literature provided the basis for identifying the underlying psychological variables relating to individual performance. These variables were incorporated into a model that established a theoretical framework for generating hypotheses and describing individuals performances in their MBO teams. The research design was based on exploratory and explanatory studies. An exploratory study (study one) based on semi-structured interviewing techniques explored the behavioural, organisational and performance issues in five MBOs, as a basis for justifYing the psychological variables used by individual team members to evaluate and interpret their context. Content analysis was applied to the interview results in order to elicit the relevant themes. In relation to the main explanatory study (study two) the methodology adopted was a postal questionnaire sent to a selected sample of MBO team members. The questionnaire consisted of items that formed scales which measured the psychological variables forming the research model. These measures were tested for reliability using Cronbach's Alpha. Factor analysis of the questionnaire items confirmed the latent (psychological) variables. The hypotheses formulated from the research model were tested using correlation, partial correlation and regression analysis techniques. Independent t-tests identified relationships between personal/organisational factors and the psychological variables in the model. Results from study one confirmed that the organisational-behavioural and performance issues in MBOs were similar to those encountered in other types of organisations. This validated using the organisational-behavioural literature to determine the psychological variables that relate to individual performance in MBO teams. The results from the main study (study two) identified a number of important factors relating to individuals performance in their MBO teams. It was established from study one that MBO performance in relation to financial and organisational objectives was instrumental in determining the behavioural and organisational context individual team members interpret. Team members interpret their context by aligning teams expectations of their behaviours with, preferences for working as collectivists and the perceptual effects of the ~emands, constraints, supports and opportunities of working in their organisations. This resulted m team members feeling challenge, meaning, trust, support, freedom and reward from working in their organisations. These feelings represented individuals psychological climates (or states) which, operating principally through the dimensions of challenge and meaning, were found to be instrumental in determining their performances in their organisations. Team members evaluation of their expected behaviours in their teams and its alignment with their preferences for working as collectivists and internalised values determined their motivation to affirm their collective selfconcepts in their teams. The effects of team members organisational systems determined behaviour-consequence connections which motivated them to affinn their task specific selfconcepts in their teams. The study highlighted limitations in contemponuy cognitive based theories (i.e. expectancy and goal setting) by demonstrating the influence of context interpretation on personal performance. Cognitive based theories fail to reflect individuals capacity to work flexibly (by coping) within a dimension of collectivism-individualism and also ignore their motivation to express personal identities and internalised values. In this respect cognitive based theories were seen to be enshrined in hedonism thus failing to recognise that collectivist team members also behave in accordance with their personal values (or self-concepts) or collective identities.

Abstract:
The objective of this diploma thesis is to perform a conceptual lay-out of a small launcher. Re- quirements have been defined in order to realize this first preliminary study and design of a small launcher. In that frame, a MATLAB code has been written in order to simulate the rocket tra- jectories. An optimization program on launcher staging has been written as well. To validate this code, the VEGA and Ariane 5 launchers have been used. Then from studies on existing launchers, simulations have been performed in order to find an optimum small launcher and later on to design more precisely the small launcher. As a requirement an upper stage has been newly designed for the purpose of the study. At the end, two small launchers have been considered: a three-stage launcher using the Zefiro 23 as a first stage, the Zefiro 9 as a second stage, and an upper stage using a 3kN thrust engine; a two-stage launcher using the Zenit booster engine in the first stage, and an upper stage using a 22kN thrust engine.

Boyd, Jade Lanore. "Dancing out of place : geographies of performance and Vancouver's independent nightlife." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2280.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis draws upon an interdisciplinary approach characteristic of a performance perspective to examine the ways in which performances of identity and belonging are constituted through social dance, play and the engagement of city space. The study is based upon detailed observational and participatory data gathered over the course of one year (2005-2006) while attending indie dance parties within the urban centre of East Vancouver. The research follows the movement of Vancouver's artist-identified youth who strive to create something outside of the 'big-business' dance clubs that occupy the city of Vancouver's appointed entertainment district, weaving together an alternate, complex and mobile portrait of the city in play. The thesis begins with the concept of the mainstream and argues that though the concept manifests sometimes as an ambiguous construct that indie youth define themselves against, the mainstream is much more than an imaginary entity. The mainstream is both material and geographical while the relationship between dominant culture and some youth subcultures are mutually dependent. The concept of social space features prominently within the thesis; interviewees constitute themselves in relation to what it means to be 'in' and 'of' East Vancouver, revealing their identities as closely tied to place and also to social class. Identities are not only acquired negatively (in opposition), but are also positively acquired, through constitutive practices. Noting that social class is materially based, I argue that it is also both performed and performative, as a persistent mode of distinction within the indie scene. These complexities of performance are approached through the rubric of social dancing, a playful yet grounded practice that is productive precisely because it enables analyses that are at the same time social, spatial and embodied. Indie dance events offer the opportunity to connect participants to place (East Vancouver) and through body movement (dancing) to reaffirm membership in this group.

Abstract:
The ESM, Epistémo-Socio-Marketing, is a form of Marketing of which it takes again the whole of the concepts by integrating the contributions of the epistemological approach there. The ESM, makes it possible to carry out a reading of social dimension without cutting it its origins and of its roots and without denaturing its values, but moreover, its range increases some by showing its economic dimension. The ESM, also makes it possible to carry out a reading of the Marketing approach by attaching it to what seems its true origins, by updating its values, by increasing its in particular social range. The ESM, after being positioned compared to social and economic dimension, allows finally a better complementarity between the Social sector and the sector commercial and with the managers of structures intervening in the Social sector and commercial to better articulate social performance and economic performance

Abstract:
This thesis examines the figure of the oral storyteller as depicted in various Old Norse literary sources written down during the High Middle Ages, the majority in Iceland, between the mid-twelfth and early fourteenth centuries. It comprises a literary-critical discussion of how storytellers and the art of storytelling are imagined, interpreted and represented within these texts. Where possible, connections are drawn between genres, and across considerable temporal and geographical distances, in order to illustrate the strength and endurance of cultural preoccupations with disguise, narrative structure and the role of intermediaries in different historical and creative contexts. The central contention is that the eddic poets and saga authors shared a common and profound sensitivity to the metatextual dimension of the storytelling endeavour in which they were engaged, and that this sensitivity manifested itself in strikingly similar ways across the whole period. The thesis is structured thematically, rather than chronologically, in order to foreground enduring cultural trends. The first chapter discusses the metatextual tendencies of the eddic poets, noting their recurring interest in disguise and the assertion (or appropriation) of an identity by characters who feature in their stories. It also includes an analysis of Vǫluspá which suggests that the poem lends itself to recitation by multiple performers. Chapter Two analyses depictions of public storytelling in the sagas and the relationship between writer and oral reciter as presented in the prologues and epilogues composed to ‘frame’ a number of these texts. Chapters Three and Four contain close readings of passages from the Sagas of Icelanders and eddic poetry, which demonstrate how certain characters, often of low social status, temporarily take on the mantle of a storyteller and perform their accounts of events so as to illuminate the texts' broader interest in the mechanics of literary narrative.

Chepel, Elena. "Ritual in Old Comedy : theatrical representation of cultic performance." Thesis, University of Reading, 2016. http://centaur.reading.ac.uk/68908/.

Full text
Abstract:
The study analyses the representations of Greek ritual in plays and fragments of Old Comedy within the religious framework of the dramatic festivals. The main focus is on the rites performed by comic characters as part of fictional plot, such as sacrifices, processions, libations, and prayers. The aim of the study is to explore how playwrights use the elements of Greek religion while building the imaginary world of comedy and linking it to Athenian religious practices. Comic representations of ritual retain basic aspects of actual Greek cult such as the interconnection between ritual speech and ritual act, the centrality of animal sacrificial offerings, and the ritualisation of space and time. These fundamental similarities make Old Comedy a valuable source for the study of Greek cultic performances as well as their religious and social function. At the same time the imitation of rituals in comedy is selective and distortive and cannot be taken for granted as direct reflection of real life. Furthermore, theatrical representations of ritual claim to be authentic and to transform the performance of the comic play into a religiously significant event. The complex multilevel interrelationship between the ritual experience of the audience and the manipulation of this experience in drama through representations allows poets to achieve comic effect and mediate crucial meanings.

Abstract:
This research deals with the participation effects of employees on firm performance. This thesis explores three dimensions of employees' participation: economic (employee ownership), political (involvement in corporate governance structure) and organizational. In the first part, this research theoretically examines effects of employees' participation using different theoretical frameworks. At the end of the first part, some research hypotheses are formulated. In a second part, this research empirically examines participation effects on firm performance thanks to statistical tests made on two samples. The first sample is based on 189 French listed firms on 2001-2004. The second one, cross sectional, investigates more specifically political representation of employees on corporate governance structure. The majors results show that : 1/ the relationship between employee ownership and firm performance is curvilinear. 2/ board employee representation negatively moderates employee ownership - firm performance relationship. In a third part, a theoretical model, combining empirical results and theoretical in-depth analysis, is proposed

The purpose of this thesis is to create the character of Dabby Bryant in Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, which was selected for the third production in the University of New Orleans' 2004-2005 theatre season. The steps involved in creating Dabby Bryant's character involve using specific methods as outlined by the Acting Program of UNO as well as the text A Practical Handbook for the Actor by Melissa Bruder, et. al. I also utilized specific instructions from the director of the production, David Hoover, also my major professor. I also had to use the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally as this is the text from which the Wertenbaker play is taken. The process also includes the journal kept during the rehearsal process and performance run as well as scene scores created as a blueprint for the creation of the character.

Piper, Antony T. "Modelling cancellous bone screw performance using finite element models." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/12071.

Full text
Abstract:
Implants such as intramedullary nails or cancellous screws are used to mechanically stabilize fractures in bone. They provide reinforcement to the bone if they find good purchase in cancellous bone. Not all implants hold enough loads for mechanical stability and pull-out or cut-out may happen in some cases. This is linked to the interface between the bone and the implant. Computer modelling techniques are used to investigate both the effects of cut-out in a femur model, and the pull-out forces of cancellous bone screws. The bone geometry was based on CT scanned cancellous bone and converted using Mimics® software. The finite element models were produced in ANSYS®. Simple bone models were used to examine a fractured femur under standard gait loading. These models were continuum models and idealised the screw to bone interface in order to ease computational demand. The models were used to investigate the ideal positions of intramedullary devices lag screws on an anterior-posterior view of the implant location. In accordance with literature, an inferior-central or central-central position was the best position of the lag screw, while a superior-anterior or inferior-anterior position was adverse. The introduction of multi-scale modelling in order to investigate cut-out with a discrete bone model was not achieved. Discrete cancellous bone models were used to examine some of the cancellous screw characteristics, including pitch, inner diameter and proximal half angle, while a cancellous screw was also studied using a model of cancellous bone with a range of bone densities. The calculated reaction force for a pull-out of 0.2mm shows the influence of some parameters. Change in the proximal half angle increased the stiffness and strength by about 15% in line with the experimental findings of others, while apparent density changes of 2.5% increased the forces threefold. A significant reduction in reaction force was observed when a particular screw geometry in lower apparent density bone was modelled and rotated through 180° on a plane. Examination of the geometry of the bone/screw interface shows that in certain positions there is very little cancellous bone to support the implant. This will lead to low strength and is very difficult to predict. The same models were used to examine the effect of increasing bone stiffness adjacent to the implant and the use of a cement layer to augment the screw model. The increasing stiffness concluded that an increase in pull-out stiffness can be achieved, even in low quality bone, while the cement augmentation showed a significant increase in pull-out strength, though it was idealised as bonded to the bone and screw.

Foá, Maryclare. "Sounding out : performance drawing in response to the outside environment." Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2011. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5455/.

Full text
Abstract:
My enquiry focuses on how a drawing, when made in response to the outside environment, might be conditioned by that environment, and in turn how that environment might be influenced by that drawing. Examination of texts by, among others, Bachelard, Merleau-Ponty and Baudelaire have contributed towards understanding ideas about humankind’s physical memory of landscape, phenomenological experience in relation to the outside space, and ideas concerning the interaction between the practitioner and the outside space. Four key issues related to drawing are explored in this research (each is the subject of a chapter in the thesis). Firstly, the practitioner’s stance in the process of drawing is examined, in particular the practitioner’s gesture, which mimics the form of the subject, and performs the subject into being. The practitioner’s position is addressed in relation to how the gaze of the other fashions that position into a performance. Secondly, ‘movement’ is identified as a crucial material component of the process of performance drawing. Movement’s capacity to energise the work, stimulate engagement with the subject, and promote the continual development of ideas is also investigated. Thirdly, a number of interpretations of the outside environment established by individuals who work in different professions are examined. These different readings of place identify ‘signs’ as conditioning the character of place, and as being read by passers-by as directions through place, thereby revealing an interaction between place and humankind. Fourthly, while exploring how to performance draw in direct response to place, the methodology is developed through three stages. The traditional mark-making onto paper was found to keep a distance between the practitioner (observer) and the subject (the environment). The mark-making transferred onto the outside environment was found to retain a distance, held by the tool, between the subject and practitioner. And the practitioner by using her body and voice was found to bridge the space between subject and self. The drawing with sound methodology was found to map, signal, and measure place in direct relation to practitioner, while also revealing an interactive conditioning between place and practitioner, through sonic reflection and resonance. Critical analysis and documentation of findings concerning the practical work are interspersed throughout the written text, and a DVD of audiovisual documentation of practical works is also included as an attachment to the written thesis.

Sun, Yuming. "Closing the building energy performance gap by improving our predictions." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52285.

Full text
Abstract:
Increasing studies imply that predicted energy performance of buildings significantly deviates from actual measured energy use. This so-called "performance gap" may undermine one's confidence in energy-efficient buildings, and thereby the role of building energy efficiency in the national carbon reduction plan. Closing the performance gap becomes a daunting challenge for the involved professions, stimulating them to reflect on how to investigate and better understand the size, origins, and extent of the gap. The energy performance gap underlines the lack of prediction capability of current building energy models. Specifically, existing predictions are predominantly deterministic, providing point estimation over the future quantity or event of interest. It, thus, largely ignores the error and noise inherent in an uncertain future of building energy consumption. To overcome this, the thesis turns to a thriving area in engineering statistics that focuses on computation-based uncertainty quantification. The work provides theories and models that enable probabilistic prediction over future energy consumption, forming the basis of risk assessment in decision-making. Uncertainties that affect the wide variety of interacting systems in buildings are organized into five scales (meteorology - urban - building - systems - occupants). At each level both model form and input parameter uncertainty are characterized with probability, involving statistical modeling and parameter distributional analysis. The quantification of uncertainty at different system scales is accomplished using the network of collaborators established through an NSF-funded research project. The bottom-up uncertainty quantification approach, which deals with meta uncertainty, is fundamental for generic application of uncertainty analysis across different types of buildings, under different urban climate conditions, and in different usage scenarios. Probabilistic predictions are evaluated by two criteria: coverage and sharpness. The goal of probabilistic prediction is to maximize the sharpness of the predictive distributions subject to the coverage of the realized values. The method is evaluated on a set of buildings on the Georgia Tech campus. The energy consumption of each building is monitored in most cases by a collection of hourly sub-metered consumption data. This research shows that a good match of probabilistic predictions and the real building energy consumption in operation is achievable. Results from the six case buildings show that using the best point estimations of the probabilistic predictions reduces the mean absolute error (MAE) from 44% to 15% and the root mean squared error (RMSE) from 49% to 18% in total annual cooling energy consumption. As for monthly cooling energy consumption, the MAE decreases from 44% to 21% and the RMSE decreases from 53% to 28%. More importantly, the entire probability distributions are statistically verified at annual level of building energy predictions. Based on uncertainty and sensitivity analysis applied to these buildings, the thesis concludes that the proposed method significantly reduces the magnitude and effectively infers the origins of the building energy performance gap.

Abstract:
This text takes a new approach to autoethnography by using personal narratives to analyze our work across multiple disciplines and subdisciplines. These stories feature authors working at the intersections of autoethnography and critical theory within a given organizational context. Organizations are not simply entities, but systems of meaning. As such they are sites of cultural practices and performances, and of domination, resistance and struggle. Working at the intersection of organizational studies and autoethnography, this book explores the ability of autoethnographic and personal narrative approaches to generate important, innovative, and empowering understandings of difference, discourses, and identities, while attending to the various powerful dynamics that are at play in organizations. These are stories of work, at work, and help to finally bring theory and direct exemplars together.

Abstract:
A customer-oriented strategy is widely believed to improve organizational performance. But there are few research papers on CRM / performance link, as the concept of Customer Relationship Management is fairly recent and difficult to define. To this end, this research sets out to propose an in-depth analysis of the CRM concept and to analyze the relationship between the three forms of CRM identified (operational CRM, analytical CRM and strategic CRM), the IT strategy/structure and organizational performance, using the strategic alignment perspective. In view of this, an empirical study was conducted among 138 firms to validate our research model linking CRM orientation and technological deployment to performance. Using Structural Equation Modeling techniques, a “direct model” was tested and then, a “global model” including the “co-alignment” latent variable. The main thrust of the findings indicate that the co-alignment between CRM orientation and technological deployment enhance business performance in terms of growth and profitability. Furthermore, we identified a different profile of technological deployment for each form of CRM

Abstract:
SME generally encounters difficulties to develop its durable total performance (economic, organisational and social). Two principal reasons for this incapacity structure our research problematic: on the one hand, the time granted by the owner-leader of the SME to operational activity to the detriment of the activities of stronger added value; and in addition, a lack of thorough strategic thinking in the creation of potential, this second reason being a consequence of the first. A response to our two problems can be built starting from the concept of internal potential of the company as a strategic lever. From the analysis of the resource-based view of the firm and socio-economic approach we begin again, on our account, of the essential concepts to structure our theoretical step. Our theoretical proposal is a model of strategic decision-making in SME. It integrates two research variables: the coordination of the actors and strategic planning. It requires a permanent interaction to build a strategic decision-making process in SME. Our assumption of research consists in implying the framing of proximity in the decision-making of the company in order to build a collective action and participative decisions. For the research data collection, we apply a methodology of intervention-research in Mexican small business, which ensures a thorough observation of the practices of management and the cognitive interaction between the researcher and the actors of the organization. This method of research is accompanied by a socio-economic approach of intervention, whose objective is to generate a major change in the structures and the behaviours of the company

Abstract:
The K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) is an efficient method to find similar data among a large set of it. Over the years, a huge number of applications have used KNN's capabilities to discover similarities within the data generated in diverse areas such as business, medicine, music, and computer science. Despite years of research have brought several approaches of this algorithm, its implementation still remains a challenge, particularly today where the data is growing at unthinkable rates. In this context, running KNN on large datasets brings two major issues: huge memory footprints and very long runtimes. Because of these high costs in terms of computational resources and time, KNN state-of the-art works do not consider the fact that data can change over time, assuming always that the data remains static throughout the computation, which unfortunately does not conform to reality at all. In this thesis, we address these challenges in our contributions. Firstly, we propose an out-of-core approach to compute KNN on large datasets, using a commodity single PC. We advocate this approach as an inexpensive way to scale the KNN computation compared to the high cost of a distributed algorithm, both in terms of computational resources as well as coding, debugging and deployment effort. Secondly, we propose a multithreading out-of-core approach to face the challenges of computing KNN on data that changes rapidly and continuously over time. After a thorough evaluation, we observe that our main contributions address the challenges of computing the KNN on large datasets, leveraging the restricted resources of a single machine, decreasing runtimes compared to that of the baselines, and scaling the computation both on static and dynamic datasets

1) Artistic research cannot be subordinated to academic obedience. 2) The presence of filmmakers as characters in their own movies, playing their own roles, is perhaps the closest cinema gets to performance. This presence, supposedly documentary-oriented, always occurs with the awareness that the director has of the camera, so that he/she performs the dual role of actor-director (as Renato Cohen describes the performer) or actor-observer of his own performance (Jorge Glusberg). The sentence used as title of this part - \"I\'m in front of the camera but my head is behind it\" - was said by Jean-Luc Godard while participating in the film Room 666, by Wim Wenders. 3) Artist\'s criticism tends to be always individual; the real criticism has to be collective.

Lazzarini, Daniel Louis. "Seismic Performance of Unreinforced Masonry Walls Retrofitted with Post-Tensioning Tendons." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2009. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/143.

Full text
Abstract:
Unreinforced masonry (URM) structures have historically been regarded as structurally unsound in response to seismic events. The tendency for URM walls to collapse out-of-plane in a brittle manner is continually cause for concern. Retrofit of these walls is necessary in order to prevent severe damage and injury to occupants. This paper is concerned with the retrofit of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls in response to out-of-plane loading. A retrofit design was developed and verified through structural testing. The selected retrofit technique incorporates vertical coring of URM walls to allow for the insertion of a single post-tensioning (PT) tendon. Tendons are spaced at a regular interval and anchored at the top of the wall parapet and at the lower diaphragm level. Tensioning of the tendons imparts a compressive stress to the wall that effectively increases the wall cracking moment strength, ultimate moment strength and displacement capacity. Additionally, the insertion of PT tendons allows the wall to behave in a ductile manner in response to out-of-plane ground motion. Extensive research was conducted in order to accurately portray the material properties and construction methods of unreinforced masonry walls in San Luis Obispo, California. Various mortar mix designs were generated and tested so that a mix design could be selected to best reflect the target URM structures. Seismic parameters were generated to reflect a URM structure in San Luis Obispo. An unreinforced masonry wall was constructed by a professional mason using the established mortar mix proportions and salvaged bricks from the 1920 era. Having a pin-pin unsupported height of 11 feet, the wall constructed for testing was reflective of the configuration of URM walls in many downtown San Luis Obispo structures. The wall was loaded in the out-of-plane direction by 4 equal point loads mimicking a uniformly distributed load. The testing program consisted of cycling the wall through target internal moments and target displacements. It was verified through testing that post-tensioning tendons can be successfully introduced in URM walls to resist out-of-plane bending. Testing showed that the addition of PT tendons significantly increased the wall’s cracking moment capacity, giving it the elastic strength to resist twice the forces imposed by the design-level ground motion. PT tendons also increased the nominal strength of the wall, allowing the wall to achieve large displacements without collapse. It was also found that PT tendons provided a restoring force to the wall returning it to almost no residual displacement after each displacement cycle. Thus, the URM wall retrofitted with PT tendons demonstrated significant integrity as a structural system, providing for improved strength and ductility with no residual displacement.

Abstract:

Raw, Rachael Kathleen. "The effect of old age on motor control : performance and learning." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3404/.

Full text
Abstract:
A decrease in motor ability can have a profound impact on a person’s capacity to maintain independence. Motor skill levels decline with age and this can create difficulties for older adults as they attempt to maintain independent lives. The fact that people in today’s society are living for much longer means that robust methods for examining movement in older adults, must be developed. These methods will increase our understanding of how movement deteriorates with age and inform approaches to rehabilitation in cases where movement is lost (e.g. motor paresis after stroke). Accordingly, this doctoral research used sophisticated kinematic technology to create a series of computerised visuomotor tasks designed to achieve the following primary aims (i) to examine specific questions regarding age differences in motor performance; (ii) to create an experimental task to measure and infer potential causes of age-related changes in motor learning; and (iii) use the motor learning task to assess the outcomes of tDCS in healthy younger and older adults. A secondary aim was to produce tests that have the potential for use in rehabilitative settings, where more sensitive methods of assessment are required. Chapter 1 reviews previous research on the topics of ageing, motor control, and rehabilitation, and identifies needs for further empirical investigation. Age differences in motor performance are examined in the experimental work of Chapters 2 and 3, which suggests that older people compensate for motor decline by making spatial and temporal adjustments to their movements in order to meet task demands – a finding that generalised between two different motor tasks. Chapter 4 considers performance differences between the preferred and non-preferred hand, and includes findings of a tracing study where manual asymmetries were reduced in older adults. The problems that can arise when measuring differences between the hands are, however, highlighted in the experimental work of Chapter 5. The research in Chapters 6 and 7 focuses on motor learning. In Chapter 6 a motor sequence learning task is developed, which was used to examine the relationship between motor performance and learning. This task paradigm was used again in Chapter 7, which begins by reviewing previous studies that have applied Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to modify movement in healthy people and in stroke populations, and ends with two experiments that found no beneficial effects of tDCS on motor sequence learning in younger and older adults. Finally, Chapter 8 summarises the findings of each experimental chapter and considers future applications of the motor tasks designed throughout this doctoral work.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Making sense of the competitive environment has become an essential condition for organisational survival and growth. The nature of the competitive environment has evolved to a state that all companies in an industry have more or less the same access to information. It is the companies that translate that information into actionable intelligence that will have the best chance of a competitive advantage. However, few organisations have the resources to study every aspect of the competitive environment. Prioritisation is required to ensure that only those aspects of the competitive environment that will really contribute to the performance of a company are studied. Translating information into intelligence requires both a process and a focus. This study was used to derive a conceptual competitive intelligence process model to guide the operations of Old Mutual’s Competitive Intelligence (CI) function. The conceptual model presented is based on a literature study and details the required steps in translating available information into actionable intelligence. The literature study firstly defines the concept of competitive intelligence. Secondly, it describes the conceptual model. Finally, the literature study describes in more detail the first phase of the intelligence process, i.e. the identification of intelligence needs of the organisation, and the translation of those needs into topics that can be prioritised and operationalised for collection and analysis by the CI function. This process is referred to as the Key Intelligence Topics (KITs) process. The identification of needs was done by means of an empirical study and entailed personal interviews with members of the senior management team of Old Mutual. The most significant need identified in the interviews is for forward-looking analysis of industry trends and competitor strategies. The products of these analyses should suggest potential actions to the recipients or users. The interviews and business documentation on strategic and tactical initiatives were used to determine the key intelligence needs of Old Mutual. The process and framework of interpreting the intelligence needs into prioritised KITs is described in Chapter 4. However, on Old Mutual’s request, specifics pertaining to strategic initiatives and intelligence requirements derived from the empirical study have not been documented in this study.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the question of authenticity in old-time music, and the ways in which it is studied in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Studies program. In an academic setting, old-time is often studied in more of a historical or anthropological context and less as a specific style of music. Arguments for authenticity in this music have been made since the popularity of such films as “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Cold Mountain”, which brought a lot of outside attention to the genres of bluegrass and old-time music, as well as defining the aesthetics associated with them. Contemporary composition and performance of old-time music exists, but is not typically studied in an academic setting, or evaluated for how it adds to the musical tradition. The intention of this thesis is to validate the existence of contemporary composition in old-time music, and its authenticity within the genre.

Herrmann, Andrew F. "Walking in Kierkegaard's Instant and Walking out of American Christendom." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2015. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/760.

Full text
Abstract:
In the life of Søren A. Kierkegaard “the instant” had two distinct meanings. The first use of the phrase “the instant” is the point of intersection of time and eternity. It is the split second of decision, and the flash of a personal revolutionizing vision: a decisive “glint of an eye” to live in the existential moment. However, The Instant was also the title of a broadsheet Kierkegaard published at the end of his life that directly attacked “Christendom” and the idea of a Christian Nation. Through a layered account using narrative vignettes, I examine how “instants” and Kierkegaard's The Instant impacted my ideas of identity, community, and Christianity, leading me to a place of exile.

Susomrith, Pattanee. "An examination of HR outsourcing in Australian organisations : motivations, process and performance." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2008. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/179.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research was to explore the HR outsourcing process and examine the interaction and effects of the factors of business strategy, motivation, HR function outsourced, and the outcome. The interaction of these factors was modelled upon a theoretical framework based upon current literature. This framework was investigated using both a qualitative and quantitative approach. The goal of this research was to characterise these factors and identify the relationships between these factors. The qualitative approach consisted of six case studies where one-to-one interviews were conducted with HR managers of medium to large Australian organisations. The responses to the interview questions from each interviewee was analysed to determine outsourcing characteristics and unique issues not previously identified within current literature. These issues included: when an organisation does not have the resources to conduct thorough research into the identification and selection of a service provider then they will use the recommendations of peer organisations. When an organisation contracts a service provider a relationship is established that will bond the two parties. The length of the service contract is dependent upon the complexity of !he outsourced HR function. The quality of service from a service provider must match that of the organisation. Finally, the contract between the service provider and the organisation must contain provisions for a changing economic environment. The quantitative approach consisted of a survey distributed to 1995 medium to large Australian organisations identified from the Dunn and Bradstreet database. A total of 163 valid responses were received from which 124 outsourced one or more HR functions. This corresponded to a response rate of6.22%. The survey data was analysed using factor analysis to reduce the business strategy variable to two categories: Innovative-Quality Enhancement and Cost Leadership. Similarly, Factor analysis was used to reduce the variables of Motivation to four categories: HR Management, Learning, Reduced Cost and Political reason. The variable of Process was reduced to four categories: Reserved, Regular, Rapid and Relaxed. The outcome variables were reduced to two categories: Organisation and Operational. Cluster analysis was used to classify the cases based upon these reduced factors from which the relationships between these factors were analysed. The analysis found that no relationship existed between business strategy and motivation also no relationship was found between business strategy and outsourced HR function. A partial relationship was found between business strategy and process and another partial relationship was found between outsourced HR function and process similarly a relationship was found between process and outcome. Several relationships were found between motivation end outsourced HR function. The results from this exploratory research have significant implications for human resource management theory and practice. The developed theoretical framework provides a useful model of the HR outsourcing factors within Australia. This framework together with the unique factors identified through the qualitative analysis provides a significant platform from which additional research may be conducted.

Guirola, Marcela Renee. "Strength and Performance of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Composite Slabs." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35431.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to evaluate and compare the influence of four types of secondary reinforcement on various component strengths related to composite slabs. These components include the composite slab strength under uniform load, the strength of two types of shear connectors used with composite beams and joists, composite slab strength due to a concentrated load, and the flexural toughness and first-crack strength of fiber-reinforced concrete using ASTM C1018 (1998) standard test. The performance of the specimens reinforced with fibers are compared with that of the specimens reinforced with welded-wire fabric (WWF), with the purpose of determining if fiber-reinforced concrete can be used as an alternative to WWF.

Davidson, Adam. "Performing "Hurt" : Aging, Disability, and Popular Music as Mediated Product and Lived-Experience in Johnny Cash's Final Recordings." Scholar Commons, 2018. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7139.

Full text
Abstract:
Sitting at a rarely examined intersection between aging, disability, and popular culture, this project explores how the aging body becomes the disabled body in the context of popular music. In what follows, I trouble the distinction between bodies and mediation, between lived-experience and cultural product, and I argue that the voice of the aging artist engages with his lived-experience even as he performs socially-constructed conceptions of aging and disability. I read Johnny Cash’s 2002 cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” on American IV: The Man Comes Around as a performance of the singer’s age and disabled condition. Through pain- saturated lyrics, music filled with unresolved tension, a damaged voice, and a video that puts his aged body on display, Cash performs a disability script that presents his age and personal health as disabling burden. I explore how country music, Cash’s performance past, and strategies pursued by his producer, Rick Rubin, all contribute to a performance that is both successful popular song and a manifestation of the singer’s declining condition. The project invites subsequent explorations of the intersection of age and disability in popular music, and highlights several artists whose voices and performances of old age and disability demand attention. The project aligns with an interactive approach to disability research, breaking down the dialectic between social and individual priorities in disability studies and foregrounding how each influence the overall performance.

Whitworth, Colin. "BLESS OUR HEARTS: TOWARDS A MODEL FOR QUEER ORAL HISTORY." OpenSIUC, 2020. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1792.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers an outlined proposal and a model for practicing queer oral history—a nuancing of oral history praxis. Queer oral history is rooted in performance studies’ call to consider everyday texts alongside Dwight Conquergood’s (1985) articulations of ethical and dialogic performance of the other. I propose that queer oral history exists as an alternative praxis to traditional oral history; in order for this distinction to emerge, a practitioner must accept two charges. The first is a commitment to destabilizing oral history through the inclusion of other diverse methodological practices. Further, the researcher must welcome the ethical imperative to reflexively question subjectivity through their own role in constructing an oral history. Queer oral history demands of its practitioners a different set of goals that grow from traditional oral history, but also carefully complicate the practice of oral history as a methodology in order to address the in-between role of the subject-researcher. This placement within the gaps—the in-between—renders queer oral history theoretically queer, opening up possibilities beyond simply an oral history about queer themes. Because of its focus on commitments as a way to lead practice, queer oral history could prove useful for other person-based qualitative research methods. In order to propose queer oral history, this document traces one specific performance—Bless Our Hearts: An Oral History of the Queer South—from intellectual inception through scripting, staging, performance, and reperformance. Offering theoretical precepts, a completed script, and deep discussions of choices in scripting and embodiment, this dissertation offers a model that shows one queer oral history—about the intersections of queer and Southern identities—as it moves from interview process to complete performance project.
