Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Politics and Performance is a unique collection of articles introducing cutting-edge research and scholarship on politics and performance, which contributes to exciting interdisciplinary work and to shaping a subfield. Organized along five themes—performativity and theatricality; identities; sites and scripts; body, voice, and gesture; and affect—the volume brings together leading scholars in the fields of politics and performance who put forward critically informed interdisciplinary work on everyday social performances, from various embodiments of resistance to a less conscious and willed dimension of reproducing social and political categories, as well as performances of political institutions and processes, in order to understand the contemporary world. The aim of the Handbook is to demonstrate that this disciplinary interweaving ultimately produces a richer, more complex view of our contemporary world than either field is able to do on its own. At the heart of the project is the ambition to introduce both performance and politics scholars to the tools of research and analysis needed to develop a sophisticated understanding of political actions as a function of performance and a firmer basis for recognizing the political potential inherent in all acts of performance.

Stone Peters, Julie. Law as Performance. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192898494.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Tirades against legal theatrics are nearly as old as law itself, and yet so is the age-old claim that law must not merely be done, but “seen to be done.” Law as Performance traces the history of legal performance and spectatorship through the early modern period. Viewing law as the product not merely of edicts or doctrines but of expressive action, it investigates the performances that literally created law: in civic arenas, courtrooms, and judges’ chambers; on scaffolds; and in the streets. It examines the legal codes, learned treatises, trial reports, lawyers’ manuals, execution narratives, rhetoric books, images (and more) that confronted these performances, praising their virtues or denouncing their evils. In so doing, it recovers a long, rich, and largely overlooked tradition of jurisprudential thought about law as a performance practice. This tradition not only generated an elaborate poetics and politics of legal performance. It provided western jurisprudence with a set of constitutive norms that shaped the very identity of law. That identity emerged, in part, through an opposition: law stood for cool deliberation, by-the-book rules, and sovereign discipline; theatre stood for deceptive artifice, entertainment, histrionics, melodrama. And yet legal performance, even at its most theatrical, also appeared fundamental to law’s realization—a central mechanism for shaping legal subjects, key to persuasion, essential to deterrence, indispensable to law’s power—as it still does today.

Abstract:
One of the more surprising developments in the performance of Shakespeare across England over the past decade is the number of puppets who’ve appeared in the casting, sometimes in productions made for children (Macbeth at Little Angel; The Tempest, Little Angel/RSC); sometimes in productions made for adults (A Midsummer Night’s Dream at both Bristol Old Vic/Handspring and Krymov Laboratory; Propeller’s Richard III designed by Michael Pavelka). This chapter examines seven productions to give a sense of the variety of puppet performances on offer and to discover something about the effect of casting puppets: what puppets do, what they bring to performance, and how they act upon Shakespeare to make audiences ‘see new’, see differently. Through its discoveries, it makes a stab at theorizing how puppets behaves in the field of representation on postmodern Shakespearean stages and identifies ‘genealogies of performance’ that connect the puppets with their performances.

Abstract:
Shakespearean performance criticism has undergone a sea change in recent years, and strong tides of discovery are continuing to shift the contours of the discipline. The essays in this volume, written by scholars from around the world, reveal how these critical cross-currents are influencing the ways we now view Shakespeare in performance. Essays are divided into four groups. The first group interrogates how Shakespeare continues to achieve contemporaneity for Western audiences by exploring modes of performance, acting styles, and aesthetic choices that are regarded as experimental. The second group tackles the burgeoning field of reception: how and why audiences respond to performances, or actors to the conditions in which they perform; how immersive productions turn spectators into actors; how memory and cognition shape and reshape the performances we think we saw. The third group addresses the ways in which technology has altered our views of Shakespeare, both through the mediums of film and sound recording, and through digitalizing processes which have caused a profound reconsideration of what performance is and how it is accessed. The final group grapples with intercultural Shakespeare, considering not only matters of cultural hegemony and appropriation in a ‘global’ importation of non-Western productions to Europe and North America, but also how Shakespeare has been made ‘local’ in performances staged or filmed in African, Asian, and Latin American countries. Together, these groundbreaking essays attest to the richness and diversity of Shakespearean performance criticism as practised today, and point the way to critical continents not yet explored.
