Abstract:
The Australian genus Theprisa Moore, 1963, is taxonomically revised to comprise five species, two newly described: Theprisa darlingtoni Liebherr & Porch, sp. nov. of Tasmania, and Theprisa otway Liebherr, Porch & Maddison, sp. nov. from the Otway Ranges, Victoria. Two previously described species, T. australis (Castelnau) and T. montana (Castelnau), are distributed in the mountains of Victoria. The third previously described species, T. convexa (Sloane) is found in Tasmania. A lectotype is designated for T. convexa because the various syntypes are ambiguously labelled. Cladistic analysis based on morphological characters establishes monophyly of Theprisa relative to the Australian genera Sitaphe Moore and Spherita Liebherr. This and a second clade of Australian genera (Pterogmus Sloane, Thayerella Baehr, and Neonomius Moore) do not form a natural group, but are cladistically interdigitated among two monophyletic New Zealand lineages (Tarastethus Sharp, and Trichopsida Larochelle and Larivière) suggesting substantial trans-Tasman diversification among these groups. Hypothesized relationships within Theprisa are consistent with two bouts of speciation involving the Bass Strait; an initial event establishing T. convexa as adelphotaxon to the other four species, and a more recent event establishing the sister species T. darlingtoni and T. montana. Geographic restriction of T. otway to the Otway Ranges is paralleled by Otway endemics in several other carabid beetle genera, as well as by endemics in numerous other terrestrial arthropod taxa. Whereas these numerous Otway endemics support the distinctive nature of the Otway Range fauna, their biogeographic relationships are extremely varied, illustrating that the Otways have accrued their distinctive biodiversity via various means.

Abstract:
The Otway Ranges contain many of the highest-wildfire-risk communities in Victoria, Australia. One of the chief risk mitigation measures in the Otway Ranges is planned burning. The location and amount of planned burning that is undertaken need to consider stakeholder perspectives that can be largely divergent, invoking difficult trade-offs for land-management agencies. The structured decision-making framework was utilised to select the most ‘appropriate’ 40-year cross-tenure fuel management strategy for the Otway Ranges. This paper details the approach undertaken to develop an optimised set of multi-objective fuel management strategies, identify suitable monetary and non-monetary objectives and calculate risk-weighted consequences using a range of modelling techniques. To underpin clarity in trade-offs and decision making, we emphasise the use of natural measures of performance for each candidate strategy against each objective, such as lives lost, species decline and economic losses associated with wildfire. This paper also highlights the role of stakeholder engagement throughout the decision-making process. We discuss the results of the formal trade-off process that was completed using an additive multi-objective value model to identify a preferred fuel management strategy for the Otway Ranges. The preferred strategy is currently used by local management agencies to guide operational planning and delivery.

Abstract:
Recent advances in cross-section balancing software have simplified the application of basic geometric constraints to the analysis of basin development. Geometric analysis of field and seismic data allows the user to verify initial interpretations and also elucidates important information about the structural evolution of a basin. Principally, computerised balancing and restoration of cross-sections assists in constraining:the amount of crustal extension;trap geometries, particularly fault geometries through time;the geometry of key horizons at any time, revealing basin morphology and migration paths;the time and amount of maximum burial and hence hydrocarbon migration; andthe likely mechanisms involved in basin evolution. In turn, these parameters can be used to further assess hydrocarbon prospectivity by providing useful data for lithospheric modelling.This study utilises 2D cross-section balancing software (Geosec™) to decompact, balance and restore a series of regional onshore-offshore cross-sections based on both reflection seismic data in the Torquay Embayment and field mapping in the Otway Ranges. The thickness of eroded strata has been constrained by Apatite Fission Track and Vitrinite Reflectance analyses. The resulting section restoration suggests that the eastern Otway Basin experienced extension of 26 per cent in the Early Cretaceous and that the Otway Ranges were subjected to −8 per cent shortening during mid-Cretaceous inversion and −4 per cent shortening during Mio-Pliocene inversion.The structural style of the Otway Ranges and Torquay Embayment is typified by steep, relatively planar, en echelon, N and NE-dipping Early Cretaceous extension faults that were subsequently inverted and eroded during the Cenomanian and Mio-Pliocene. The structural style of the region shows strong similarities with oblique- rift analogue models suggesting that the extensional history of the region was strongly controlled by prevailing basement fabric.Lower Cretaceous source rocks in the eastern Otway Basin reached maximum maturity prior to mid-Cretaceous inversion with the exception of parts of the Torquay Embayment which may not have experienced significant uplift and erosion at this time. The lack of subsidence in the eastern Otway Basin prevented the deposition of significant amounts of Upper Cretaceous sediments which are proven reservoirs in the western Otway Basin and Gippsland Basin. Subsequent Tertiary burial was insufficient, in most regions, to allow the source rocks re-enter the oil generation window.

That there is intraspecific variation in teat-number in Antechinus agilis (agile antechinus) and A. swainsonii (dusky antechinus) has been known for a long time. Our aim was to determine whether other key morphometric traits differed among individuals with different numbers of teats. External body dimensions and pelage characteristics were measured on live individuals and compared. Within-species variation in some external body dimensions (tail, pes, and snout-vent length) coincided with teat-number differentiation in both antechinus species in the Otway Ranges, Victoria. Disparities in pelage colour and markings were apparent between A. agilis 6- and 10-teat phenotypes, but were not obvious among A. swainsonii teat phenotypes. Although small sample sizes obviated statistical analysis, we tentatively concluded that female A. agilis with 7, 8, or 9 teats in the Otway Ranges probably displayed morphometric and pelage characteristics intermediate between those of 6- and 10-teat individuals. A comparison of morphometric traits among 6-teat A. agilis from different geographic areas (Otways, Portland and Wilsons Promontory) also revealed some variation. This result was consistent with an expectation of clinal variation in external morphology among antechinus. Overall, this study indicates that localized disparities that are associated with teat-number, as well as clinal differences occurring over large geographic distances, contribute to intraspecific variation in external morphology in antechinus.

Abstract:
Vitrinite reflectance data across the Otway Ranges yield a thermal maturity map that indicates the presence of a broad NE-SW trending anticline with strong vergence to the southeast. Surface Rv max values for the central part of the ranges are >1.5 whilst those on both limbs decrease to Apatite fission track analysis of seven Eumeralla (Lower Cretaceous) samples from the coast around Wye River yields an AFTA age of 90±5 Ma, consistent with similar cooling ages measured around most of the SE Australia margin. Modelling of the data is consistent with a stratigraphic age of -100 Ma, rapid heating to −80°C for −5 Ma followed by cooling from 95–80 Ma and further cooling in the Miocene.Geologically the very large asymmetric anticline can be explained by inversion of a thick rift sequence along a major, listric northwest-dipping fault, perhaps soling at mid-crustal levels. This is consistent with structures observed offshore in the Torquay Embayment and is being tested by the AGSO deep seismic profile BMR 920T1. Observed gravity highs in the Otway Ranges may be associated with inverted high density sediments. Fission track analysis indicates that the major cooling was at −90 Ma, which is therefore likely to be the time of inversion. However, this implies compression during continental breakup, the mechanisms of which are not fully understood.

Abstract:
The Eastern Otway Basin exhibits two near-or-thogonal structural grains, specifically NE-SW and WNW-ESE trending structures dominating the Otway Ranges, Colac Trough and Torquay Embayment. The relative timing of these structures is poorly constrained, but dip analysis data from offshore seismic lines in the Torquay Embayment show that two distinct structural provinces developed during two separate extensional episodes.The Snail Terrace comprises the southern structural province of the Torquay Embayment and is characterised by the WNW-ESE trending basin margin fault and a number of small scale NW-SE trending faults. The Torquay Basin Deep makes up the northern structural province and is characterised by the large scale, cuspate Snail Fault which trends ENE-WSW with a number of smaller NE-SW trending faults present.Dip analysis of basement trends shows a bimodal population in the Torquay Embayment. The Snail Terrace data show extension towards the SSW (193°), but this trend changes abruptly to the NE across a hinge zone. Dip data in the Torquay Basin Deep and regions north of the hinge zone show extension towards the SSE (150°). Overall the data show the dominance of SSE extension with a mean vector of 166°.Seismic data show significant growth of the Crayfish Group on the Snail Terrace and a lesser growth rate in the Torquay Basin Deep. Dip data from the Snail Terrace are therefore inferred to represent the direction of basement rotation during the first phase of continental extension oriented towards the SSW during the Berriasian-Barremian? (146-125 Ma). During this phase the basin margin fault formed as well as NE-SW trending ?transtensional structures in the Otway Ranges and Colac Trough, probably related to Palaeozoic features.Substantial growth along the Snail Fault during the Aptian-Albian? suggests that a second phase of extension affected the area. The Colac Trough, Otway Ranges, Torquay Embayment and Strzelecki Ranges were significantly influenced by this Bassian phase of SSE extension which probably persisted during the Aptian-Albian? (125-97 Ma). This phase of extension had little effect in the western Otway Basin, west of the Sorrel Fault Zone, and was largely concentrated in areas within the northern failed Bass Strait Rift. During the mid-Cretaceous parts of the southern margin were subjected to uplift and erosion. Apatite fission track and vitrinite reflectance analyses show elevated palaeotemperatures associated with uplift east of the Sorell Fault Zone.

Abstract:
A list of 37 species of ptyctimous mites from the State of Victoria, Australia, is provided. Seven species new for science are described and further seven are recorded for the first time in Victoria. The genus Arphthicarus has been discovered in Victoria and is represented by two new species. Zoogeographical distribution of each species is provided. Analysis of the ptyctimous fauna from four Victorian areas (Otway Ranges, Yarra Ranges, Errinundra Plateau and Strzelecki Ranges) has revealed that four species occur in a large number of specimens in one of the areas. Similarity analyses indicate that the faunas of Errinundra Plateau and Yarra Ranges are the most similar. An overview of state of knowledge on the ptyctimous mites from State of Victoria, Australia and Australasian Region is presented.

Abstract:
Abstract. Understanding the timescales of water flow through catchments and the sources of stream water at different flow conditions is critical for understanding catchment behaviour and managing water resources. Here, tritium (3H) activities, major ion geochemistry and streamflow data were used in conjunction with lumped parameter models (LPMs) to investigate mean transit times (MTTs) and the stores of water in six headwater catchments in the Otway Ranges of southeastern Australia. 3H activities of stream water ranged from 0.20 to 2.14 TU, which are significantly lower than the annual average 3H activity of modern local rainfall, which is between 2.4 and 3.2 TU. The 3H activities of the stream water are lowest during low summer flows and increase with increasing streamflow. The concentrations of most major ions vary little with streamflow, which together with the low 3H activities imply that there is no significant direct input of recent rainfall at the streamflows sampled in this study. Instead, shallow younger water stores in the soils and regolith are most likely mobilised during the wetter months. MTTs vary from approximately 7 to 230 years. Despite uncertainties of several years in the MTTs that arise from having to assume an appropriate LPM, macroscopic mixing, and uncertainties in the 3H activities of rainfall, the conclusion that they range from years to decades is robust. Additionally, the relative differences in MTTs at different streamflows in the same catchment are estimated with more certainty. The MTTs in these and similar headwater catchments in southeastern Australia are longer than in many catchments globally. These differences may reflect the relatively low rainfall and high evapotranspiration rates in southeastern Australia compared with headwater catchments elsewhere. The long MTTs imply that there is a long-lived store of water in these catchments that can sustain the streams over drought periods lasting several years. However, the catchments are likely to be vulnerable to decadal changes in land use or climate. Additionally, there may be considerable delay in contaminants reaching the stream. An increase in nitrate and sulfate concentrations in several catchments at high streamflows may represent the input of contaminants through the shallow groundwater that contributes to streamflow during the wetter months. Poor correlations between 3H activities and catchment area, drainage density, land use, and average slope imply that the MTTs are not controlled by a single parameter but a variety of factors, including catchment geomorphology and the hydraulic properties of the soils and aquifers.

Patterns of variation in the Eucalyptus globulus Labill. complex are reassessed by combining capsule measurements from an earlier study with recent collections, mainly of subspecies globulus. Four groups of populations are apparent and can be ascribed to the four subspecies maidenii, pseudoglobulus, bicostata and globulus. Intergrade populations between the latter three subspecies are widespread and mainly occur in the Otway Ranges and west Gippsland. There is a continuum in capsule morphology between the three-fruited subspecies, pseudoglobulus and bicostata. Subspecies globulus intergrades with these three-fruited intermediates. Three-fruited intergrade populations occuning north and south of the range of core pseudoglobulus can be differentiated and probably represent intergrades between pseudoglobulus and bicostata and between pseudoglobulus and globulus respectively. Reports of bicostata in the Furneaux Group and southern Victoria are thus probably erroneous and result from convergence in capsule morphology. The previously described taxon E. stjohnii (R. T. Bak.) R. T. Bak. is part of the continuum between subspecies pseudoglobulus and bicostata, but closer to pseudoglobulus. Populations phenotypically intermediate between and significantly different from globulus and the three-fruited intergrades are highly variable and occur in western Tasmania, on the northern end of Flinders Island, in the Otway Ranges and in west Gippsland. An isolated population on Rodondo Island is highly variable and has closest affinities to pseudoglobulus despite being within the geographical range of core globulus. The population from King Island is intermediate between the Otway phenotype and core globulus. The climatic regimes of the subspecies are markedly different and most three-fruited and globulus intergrade populations have closer climatic affinities to pseudoglobulus and globulus respectively. Hypotheses relating to the origin of the pattern of variation in E. globulus are discussed.

Abstract:
A well-dated pollen record from Chapple Vale in the north of the Otway region provides a detailed history of vegetation and environments through the last c. 7000 years. From the commencement of the record, a stand of cool temperate rainforest, dominated by Nothofagus cunninghamii (Hook.) Oerst., grew on or around the site and was surrounded by eucalypt-dominated tall open forest. Between c. 5200 and 4600 years BP (before present), the rainforest declined and tall open forest predominated. Some time after 4400 years BP there was a major and consistent increase in charcoal values, suggesting an increase in burning, the progressive development of scrub–heath vegetation on site and the replacement of tall open forest vegetation by eucalypt woodland surrounding the site. The fossil evidence for N. cunninghamii on the site and its present restriction to wetter areas and gullies of the Otway Ranges indicate, from the application of the present bioclimatic range of the species, a mean annual temperature and winter temperatures that were c. 1˚C cooler than present, and summer temperatures that were possibly slightly cooler than present, together with a much higher effective precipitation from the commencement of the record until c. 4600 years BP. These climatic estimates are in accord with those derived from a similar study of changing distributions of N. cunninghamii in the Central Highlands of lower mean annual and cooler summer temperatures and higher effective precipitation over this time span. However, for winter, the evidence is equivocal. While the Otway estimates suggest lower temperatures, the Central Highlands findings show slightly higher temperatures. Taking into account additional present-day records for N. cunninghamii, it is likely that the Otway estimates are the most reliable.

Abstract:
Spectacular outcrops of the terrestrial Aptian-Albian Eumeralla Formation are exposed in the Skenes Creek– Wongarra region, located on the eastern margin of the Otway Ranges, Victoria. The succession comprises mudstone-dominated floodplain and lacustrine successions and fluvially-derived sandstones. Lithofacies observed in the study area comprise intraformational and exotically derived conglomerate, massive and planar laminated sandstone, trough and tabular cross-bedded sandstone, ripple laminated sandstone, interbedded sandstone and mudstone, massive to laminated mudstone and thin coal seams. Architectural analysis of the fluvial system reveals these lithofacies are arranged into architectural elements that include channel elements, sandy bedforms, downstream and lateral accretion elements, laminated sand sheets and overbank fines elements.The fluvial system is characterised by low-sinuousity, braided river channels with high width to depth ratios. Palaeocurrent data indicates that the generally westward palaeoflow is interpreted to have been diverted into local axial-through drainage patterns by active northeast trending normal faults. One of these, the Skenes Creek Fault, is also likely to have structurally isolated floodplain and lacustrine successions from the main channel belt, leading to the deposition of an anomalously thick coal measure sequence in the hanging wall of the fault. The local study therefore provides insight into regional lithofacies and potential source rock distributions, and the associated tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Eumeralla Formation in the eastern Otway Basin. While the nature of the Eumeralla Formation sandstone does not lend itself to good reservoir properties, the geometry and internal structure of the sands provide an excellent model for other fluvial sandstone reservoir reconstructions.

A new halacaroid family, Pezidae, is erected for the new genus Peza, with two new species Peza ops (type species) and Peza daps. P. ops has been widely collected in south-eastern Australia, while P. daps is known only from a single female taken from the gill chamber of a burrowing crayfish, Engaeus fultoni Smith & Schuster (Crustacea : Decapoda : Parastacidae), in the Otway Ranges, Victoria. During winter and spring, females of both species apparently attach their eggs to their hind legs. The Pezidae is regarded as the sister-group of the remaining Halacaroidea.

This paper examines how we can reduce the cost of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). The CO2CRC research and demonstration projects during the last 15 years and the upcoming Otway Stage 3 Project aim to reduce the cost of CCUS. The CO2CRC Otway Stage 3 Project will develop subsurface monitoring technologies which can significantly reduce the cost of the surveillance. The CCUS associated with natural gas processing carries the lowest cost compared to other industries because production of concentrated CO2 streams is already part of the gas production process. Transport and storage remain the highest cost components of CCUS for natural gas production. Ranges of storage and transportation costs based on different publicly available data are ~US$2–40/tCO2 and ~US$2–10/tCO2 respectively. Further, the US Department of Energy cost model identifies 40–60% of storage cost as relating to recurring monitoring. This is highly dependent on project specifications, regulatory requirements and geographical considerations. The application of Otway Stage 3 subsurface technologies show preliminary long-term monitoring cost savings estimates for a large Australian project of up to 75% compared to conventional surface seismic-based methodologies. Depending on total injection mass, this would equate to an estimated cost saving of up to AU$12/tonne of CO2 injected for such a project. Reduced monitoring costs could be applied to all CCUS projects but would be of most interest to gas projects because storage is likely to be the biggest contributor to overall CCUS cost.

Abstract:
As part of a regional study of the evolution of the Otway Basin, the Investigator 3D seismic survey has been structurally analysed, using 11 extracted 2D sections and 3D interpretations of key horizons. South-southwest directed extension was widespread in the Turonian forming the Shipwreck Trough, coincident with uplift of the Otway Ranges to the northeast. The Turonian extension, at ~1.5 myrs, resulted in planar faults in the northeastern part of the Trough, but large half-graben above south-southwest dipping listric master faults in the southwest, both fault sets soling into an Early Cretaceous shale detachment. The half-graben propagated north from the Mussel-Tarpwaup Hinge-Zone by footwall collapse and accommodated deposition of reservoir rocks for the known hydrocarbon accumulations. The half-graben die out along strike to the east at tip-points against an accommodation zone that developed into a continental transform (the Shipwreck Fault).Santonian breakup in the Great Australian Bight coincided with considerable south-southwesterly extension in the Otway Basin juxtaposed against the failed Bassian rift across the Shipwreck Fault. Extension of ~1.21 km to the west of the Shipwreck Fault contrasts with ~0.42 km on the eastern side accommodated by ~0.79 km left-lateral displacement along the Shipwreck Fault. The Belfast Mudstone was deposited during this time, forming the regional seal for the known hydrocarbon accumulations.Limited slow extension during the Campanian to Early Eocene resulted in a further 0.33 km sinistral slip along the Shipwreck Fault. Late Early Eocene Breakup in the Otway Basin ended the transitional phase, terminating extensional and Shipwreck Fault offset. The breakup caused local uplift and ~1 km erosion of Wangerrip Group sediments. The post breakup phase is characterised by prograding sequences indicating progressive-regressive cycles.The Thylacine and La Bella gas fields occur in large tilted fault-blocks near the Hinge-Zone. These successful large structures lie along a longstanding High probably sourced from south of the Hinge-Zone. Key elements for a successful hydrocarbon play are deposition of the Turonian Waarre Formation sandstone reservoirs at rift onset and of a thick Belfast Mudstone seal during continuous Coniacian-Santonian extension. Footwall collapse north of the Hinge-Zone, bound by the deepwater Otway Basin and the continental transform, controlled the distribution of traps, regional seal and hydrocarbon maturation.

The Torquay Sub-basin lies to the south of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. It has two main tectonic elements; a Basin Deep area which is flanked to the southeast by the shallower Snail Terrace. It is bounded by the Otway Ranges to the northwest and shallow basement elsewhere. The stratigraphy of the area reflects the influence of two overlapping basins. The Lower Cretaceous section is equivalent to the Otway Group of the Otway Basin, whilst the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary section is comparable with the Bass Basin stratigraphy.The Torquay Sub-basin apparently has all of the essential ingredients needed for successful hydrocarbon exploration. It has good reservoir-seal pairs, moderate structural deformation and probable source rocks in a deep kitchen. Four play types are recognised:Large Miocene age anticlines, similar to those in the Gippsland Basin, with an Eocene sandstone reservoir objective;The same reservoir in localised Oligocene anticlines associated with fault inversion;Possible Lower Cretaceous Eumeralla Formation sandstones in tilted fault blocks and faulted anticlines; andLower Cretaceous Crayfish Sub-group sandstones also in tilted fault block traps.Maturity modelling suggests that the Miocene anticlines post-date hydrocarbon generation. Poor reservoir potential and complex fault trap geometries downgrade the two Lower Cretaceous plays.The Oligocene play was tested by Wild Dog-1 which penetrated excellent Eocene age reservoir sands beneath a plastic shale seal, however, the well failed to encounter any hydrocarbons. Post-mortem analysis indicates the well tested a valid trap. The failure of the well is attributed to a lack of charge. Remaining exploration potential is limited to the deeper plays which have much greater risks associated with each play element.

The Eastern Otway Ranges, Victoria is an area recognised for its significant flora and fauna communities. An area of about 7000 ha, the Anglesea heathlands has been listed on the register of the National Estate. Although symptoms of the plant pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi have been recorded in the area since the 1970s, the extent of infestation and its effects have not been documented. The aims of this study were to assess the distribution of infestation, identify the relationship of plant infection to site variables and to identify evidence of spread of the pathogen. The presence of P. cinnamomi was assessed at 50 study sites by a visual evaluation of the vegetation, using species such as Xanthorrhoea australis (Austral grass tree) and Isopogon ceratophyllus (horny cone bush) as indicator species. Soil and plant tissues were assayed for the presence of the pathogen by cotyledon baiting and immunoassay methods. Phytophthora cinnamomi was isolated at 76% of the study sites from the floristic communities identified: heathy open forest; heathy woodland I and II; Bald Hills heathland; riparian open forest. There were significantly more diseased sites at lower altitudes. The pathogen is widely spread and causing disease throughout the area, but at present often only in small patches. There is an urgent need for disease management to protect the significant communities. These findings suggest that management actions such as mapping current infestations, closing tracks and implementing vehicle wash-down points are required.

Variation in seedling abnormalities and 2- and 4-year growth were studied in a trial in north-westem Tasmania established from 594 open-pollinated families from throughout the geographical range of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. ssp, globulus and populations intergrading with other subspecies. Most (77-80%) of the total (phenotypic) variation in growth traits occurred within families. The genetic variation between families within localities (within c. 10 krn; 13-15% of the total variation), between localities within regions (within c. 100-150 km; c: 4%) and between regions (3-8%) was generally highly significant. However, regional and locality components together accounted for only a small proportion of the total phenotypic variation. Little differentiation was detected between separate sampling sites within localities. Estimates of individual narrow-sense heritabilities were markedly higher than previous reports and were 0.38 for conic volume and 0.41 for height at 4 years, assuming a coefficient of relatedness of 0.4 amongst open-pollinated sibs. On average, progenies from the Otway Ranges region were the fastest growing at the test site, followed by those from King Island. Parent trees with high breeding values were concentrated in the Otway Ranges, Strzelecki Ranges and far southeastem Tasmania with the Bass Strait island localities having intermediate frequencies. Forest fragmentation through clearing for agriculture appears to have had a deleterious effect on the quantitative genetic structure of intergrade populations consistent with high levels of inbreeding. Remnant populations tended to have higher levels of severely abnormal seedlings, higher mortality and poorer growth, and higher heritability estimates and variability both within and between families. Advanced generation hybridisation and inbreeding due to long periods of isolation in small, relict populations may also have had similar effects. Populations sampled are, therefore, likely to have markedly different levels of inbreeding which may have inflated differences between localities and may have important consequences for the exploitation of this material for breeding.

The distributions and life histories of two species of carabid beetles, Notonomus gravis and Notonomus philippi, are compared. N. gravis inhabits the western grassland plains of Victoria and N. philippi inhabits woodland in the Otway Ranges and areas east of Melbourne. Adults of both species show peak activity in summer after emergence, with larval development from autumn to spring. The development of N. philippi occurs approximately one month earlier than that of N. gravis. Both species readily accept larval Lepidoptera as food, are nocturnal and are the dominant carabids in their respective habitats. N. gravis has potential as a biological control agent, and the carabid communities may be used as environmental indicators.

The effect of ripping, mounding and fertiliser application on growth of E. globulus spp. globulus (Tasmanian blue gum) was assessed on 2 sites on the basaltic plains in south-western Victoria. The sites were gravelly loam duplex soils on a well-drained hillcrest and a clay–loam duplex soil on a valley flat that has impeded drainage in winter. The ground preparation treatments comprised a control (herbicide only), ripping to 65 cm, ripping plus small mounds (20 by 40 cm) and ripping plus large mound (60 by 150 cm). The fertiliser treatments were nil, 125, 250 and 500 g of fertiliser (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur) applied per tree 2 months after planting. The basal phosphorus, sulfur and potassium content of topsoil was 8–11, 11–14 and 140–220 mg/kg, respectively, for both sites. Rainfall in 1996, 1997 and 1998 was 695, 497 and 697 mm, respectively. This paper reports growth of 2 seedlots of blue gums (Yeodene Seed Orchard and Otway Ranges, Lorne) at 10 and 23 months after planting in Sep.–Oct. 1996 at 4 by 2 m spacing. The mean height of trees on the hillcrest site was 1.5 and 4.2 m at these times, respectively. For the valley flat, the mean heights were 0.9 and 3.0 m, respectively. On the hillcrest, ripping significantly increased tree height in the first year, but after 23 months neither height nor stem volume was greater than on unripped lines. Use of small mounds did not affect growth of trees at this site, whereas large mounds increased growth. At 10 months, tree height was greater (P<0.05) on the ripped plus large mounds than on the ripped only treatment, but this effect was lost at 23 months. Stem volume was 15% greater than on the ripped only treatment at 23 months, and 22% greater than the control. Trees from the Otway Ranges seedlot were taller and had 17% greater stem volume than trees from the Yeodene Seed Orchard seedlot at 23 months. For the valley flat, there were significant seedling source × site preparation interactions for height at 10 and 23 months (P<0.05), and for stem diameter and volume at 23 months (P<0.01), with the Otway seedlot performing better on the large mounds. There were no effects of fertiliser application on height, diameter or stem volume at 23 months on either site. The results indicate that planting on large mounds can improve early tree growth on farmland sites on the basaltic plains, but ripping without mounding, or fertiliser application in the first 2 years, is unlikely to improve performance.

Swamp wallabies have dramatically extended their distribution through western Victoria and south-eastern South Australia over the last 40 years. Newspaper reports from 1875 onwards show that on European settlement, wallaby populations were confined to eastern Victoria, including the ranges around Melbourne, the Otway Ranges and Portland District of south-western Victoria, and a tiny part of south-eastern South Australia. Populations contracted further with intense hunting for the fur trade until the 1930s. In the late 1970s, however, wallabies began spreading into drier habitats than those initially recorded. Possible causes underlying this change in distribution are discussed; some seem unlikely but, because wallabies began spreading soon after the introduction of European rabbit fleas as vectors of myxomatosis, the cumulative effects of releases of biological agents to control rabbits appear important. A caution is given on assuming that thick vegetation in high-rainfall areas provides the only habitat suitable for swamp wallabies, but, most importantly, the study shows how native mammals may benefit if rabbit abundance is reduced.

The Eastern Otway Ranges, Victoria have highly diverse native mammal communities. Although the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) has been recorded in the area the extent of its distribution and effects on native mammals are unclear. The aims of this study were to analyse the diet of the Red Fox in the study area, to compare the diet between seasons and habitats (woodland, forest, heathland) and to assess the diet in the habitat of the New Holland Mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) which is endangered in Victoria. Fox scats collected monthly in each habitat were analysed to determine the composition of the diet and small mammal trapping was carried out in each habitat to determine potential small mammal prey species. Overall, mammals (42%) constituted the highest proportion in the fox scats and sixteen species, including nine native species were recorded. Large-sized native mammals including Swamp Wallaby (Wallabia bicolor) and the Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) constituted 60% of the mammal diet category. The occurrence of plant material was significantly different between seasons, being more abundant in winter. There was a significant difference in the frequency of large introduced mammals in the diet between seasons, with consumption being higher in winter. The occurrence of large, native mammalian prey increased from 15% in winter to 47% in autumn. The frequency of occurrence of the major dietary categories (plant material, invertebrates, reptiles, birds, mammals) was similar across habitats. Large introduced mammals occurred in higher proportions in the diet from woodland habitat. Small mammals were more numerous in scats of heathland and scats from the forest contained the highest abundance of medium-sized mammals. There was no evidence of the endangered New Holland Mouse in scats collected from habitat where a population of the species was present.

Context The number of teats that a female agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis) possesses effectively determines her initial litter size. In the Otway Ranges, south-eastern Australia, numerous separate populations in which all females have either six or 10 teats occur fairly close together in similar, contiguous forest at comparable altitudes and latitudes. Six-teat and 10-teat females have a similar mean mass, but the latter have a 1.7 × greater reproductive potential and so should have a greater nutritional requirement while raising young than do six-teat females. Theoretically, they could meet this requirement by occupying larger and/or more exclusive home ranges during breeding than do six-teat females do (provided that their food-resource abundance is comparable), albeit at a greater energetic cost. Aims The aim of the study was to determine whether 10-teat A. agilis females occupied larger and less overlapping home ranges than did six-teat females. To interpret the findings more meaningfully, it was necessary to compare food abundance and habitat characteristics in areas occupied by the two phenotypes. Methods The investigation was conducted in six-teat and 10-teat A. agilis areas in cool temperate forest over 22 months. Population density was determined by mark–recapture methods and arthropod prey biomass and abundance by pitfall trapping. Vegetation structure and plant-taxa abundance and diversity were determined by standard plant-survey methods. Female home-range estimates determined by radio-tracking were based on 95% minimal convex polygons (MCP) and kernel analysis. Home-range overlap was based on 80% MCP range determinations and core areas were calculated from utilisation plots. Key results Female population density was 2.5 × lower in exclusively 10-teat than in exclusively six-teat populations. Radio-tracked 10-teat females’ home ranges less commonly overlapped those of identified female neighbours and, on average, were 1.5 × larger than ranges of six-teat females. Food abundance and composition was similar in six-teat and 10-teat areas, but ground cover was denser and more complex in the latter areas. Conclusions Food-resource availability was similar in the six-teat and 10-teat phenotype areas, so the larger, and probably more exclusive, home ranges of 10-teat females could reflect greater nutritional requirements resulting from having larger litters, and account for their lower population density. Implications The A. agilis teat-number variation pattern in the Otways may be a rare, visible example of ongoing incipient speciation. This makes it of great scientific and conservation value and it is important to document how the phenomenon operates.

The floristics and structure of heathland vegetation exhibiting symptoms of Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands infestation was assessed at two sites in heathlands at Anglesea, Victoria. There were significant effects in both floristics and structure. Thirteen heathland species were significantly less abundant in diseased areas and 23 species were more abundant. Diseased (infested) vegetation, when compared with non-diseased areas, had less cover of Xanthorrhoea australis and shrub species and a greater cover of sedges, grasses and open ground. Structural differences were observed between heights 0 and 0.6 m, with a decline in cover recorded in diseased vegetation. Non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination of the floristic data showed a clear separation of diseased and non-diseased vegetation and that changes in floristic composition post-infestation were similar at both sites. Although there was some evidence of regeneration of X. australis, the recovery capacity of other susceptible species at Anglesea is unknown. The long-term consequences of loss of species and structure in the eastern Otways mean that the vegetation is unlikely to return to former status, especially if the pathogen continues to reinfect.

Soil seedbanks play a key role in the post-fire recruitment of many plant species. Seedbank diversity can be influenced by spatial variability (e.g. geographic location), environmental variability (e.g. soils) and temporal disturbance heterogeneity (e.g. time since fire, TSF) across the landscape. Unlike for aboveground vegetation, relationships between these factors and soil seedbank diversity remain largely unknown. Partitioning the influence of spatial and environmental variability from that of TSF, and explaining how these factors interact with seedbank diversity, will assist conservation managers in their application of prescribed burning. We germinated soil seedbank samples from sites ranging from 1 to 75 years since fire in a heathy-woodland ecosystem across the Otway Ranges in Victoria, Australia. We also measured spatial and environmental variability across sites to partition the influence of these variables and TSF on propagules available for recruitment. We found weak positive relationships between seedbank richness and TSF; however, these relationships varied across the landscape. We found composition did not change considerably over time, suggesting, in this ecosystem, pre-fire age is not strongly influencing propagules available for recruitment post-fire. Our results suggest that spatial and environmental variability influence seedbank composition more than TSF.

Since European settlement Australian native rodents have experienced dramatic extinctions and declines. We investigated long-term population and distribution changes during 1981–2003, and known or potential causal factors of decline in the vulnerable New Holland mouse (Pseudomys novaehollandiae). We found that populations (n = 8) were extant for 1–6 years and were predominantly small, localised and extinction prone. High-density populations occurred after above-average rainfall but declined precipitously during drought. Wildfire resulted in the extirpation of some populations, while others survived in unburnt refugia. We propose that post-fire vegetation (3–7 years) contemporaneous with above-average rainfall delivered productive habitat resulting in both a population irruption, and recovery after wildfire. Population declines occurred in drought periods. Recent trapping at 42 sites (2013–17) failed to record any New Holland mice. The species has not been recorded since 2003. Recovery is unlikely without intensive management, focussed on remnant or reintroduced populations, including protection from habitat fragmentation and inappropriate fire regimes. Prevention of extinction of the species throughout its southern range will require similar management strategies.

Relational, multi-modal conversations between the authors’ experiences of a damaged environmental site occur through different knowledge systems including life sciences, art, agriculture and environmental science. The authors respond to the risks of the dramatic impact of the loss of water flow in the Barwon River, Victoria, Australia. This is a river that flows through the Indigenous lands of Wathaurong, Gulidjan, and Gadubanud country from the Otway Ranges and near to one of Deakin University’s campuses. Early in this century, groundwater extraction dried a swamp wetland, generating toxic levels of acid and heavy metals which generated a major fish kill in 2016. Loss of water led to the aquifer site at Yeodene Swamp revealing great depths of peat that, when burning, follows underground peat layers (an unknown river path) and emerges to ignite new above-ground fires. These issues and experience of dwelling in this part of Victoria inspire our embodied thinking, conversations, and art. They have prompted us to be ambitious in our actions—even provoking us to develop campaigns. Our value and respect for this place in the most holistic sense—geographic, experiential, spiritual, historical and biophilic—inspires us to come together to contextualise and apply responsibility, accountability, ethics, morality, justice and integrity. We respond to the question: What does embodiment of values look like in this context? Having brought this story into the 2019 Body of Knowledge Conference through walks and conversations by Gardiners Creek at Deakin University’s campus in Burwood, we have explored it further in this co-authored article.

The influence of Neogene tectonics in the SE Australian basins has generally been underestimated in the petroleum exploration literature. However, onshore stratigraphic and offshore seismic data indicates that significant deformation and exhumation (up to one km or more) has occurred during the late Tertiary-Quaternary. This tectonism coincides with a change in the dynamics of the Australian plate, beginning at around 12 Ma, resulting in a WNW–ESE compressional regime which has continued to the present day.Significant late Miocene tectonism is indicated by a regional angular unconformity at around the Mio-Pliocene boundary in the onshore and nearshore successions of the SE Australian basins.Evidence of on going Pliocene- Quaternary tectonism is widespread in all of the SE Australian basins. Late Tertiary tectonism has produced structures in the offshore SE Australian basins which have been favourable targets for petroleum accumulation (e.g. Nerita structure, Torquay Sub-basin; Cormorant structure, Bass Basin). In the offshore Gippsland Basin, most of the oil- and gas-bearing structures have grown during Oligocene-Recent time. Some Gippsland Basin structures were largely produced prior to the mid- Miocene, while others have a younger structural history. In areas of intense late Tertiary exhumation and uplift (e.g. proximal to the Otway and Strzelecki Ranges), burial/maturation models of petroleum generation may be significantly affected by Neogene uplift.Many structures produced by late Miocene-Pliocene deformation are dry. These relatively young structures may post-date the major maturation episodes, with the post-structure history of the basins dominated by exhumation and cooling.

The biogeographic history of Exoporia (Lepidoptera) in the Southwest Pacific is reconstructed for genera and species that show distributional boundaries corresponding to tectonic structures in the region. Correlations with tectonic formations of Mesozoic origin such as the Whitsunday Volcanic Province and Otway-Bass-Gippsland Basin system in Australia, the Vitiaz Fracture Zone in northern Melanesia, and the Western Province-Eastern Province boundary, Waitaki Fault Zone, and Waihemo Fault Zone of New Zealand are presented as evidence of an East Gondwana origin for genera and species before the geological separation of Australia and New Zealand. The correlated boundaries also suggest that many extant species retain at least parts of their original East Gondwana distribution ranges. The presence of Exoporia on the northern Melanesian Arc, New Caledonia, and New Zealand is attributed to the tectonic isolation of these areas when East Gondwana expanded into the Pacific following retreat of the Pacific Plate subduction zone. Local endemism of Mnesarchaeidae in New Zealand is interpreted as the result of an original vicariance from a widespread ancestor (‘Exoporia’) resulting in two allopatric descendants —a narrowly distributed Mnesarchoidea and a widely distributed Hepialoidea. The current overlap of these two groups in New Zealand is explained as the result of subsequent range expansion by the Hepialoidea prior to geological fragmentation of East Gondwana. The potential impact of Cretaceous geography on modern distributions is also considered for Exoporia in southern Africa and northern America. Along with lateral displacement of Exoporia, tectonic processes also contributed to the origin of high elevation endemics through a process of passive tectonic uplift.

Conservation and planning for threatened species requires knowledge of the species? spatial distribution, prefered habitat and response to disturbance factors such as fire. The white-footed dunnart (Sminthopsis leucopus) is currently listed as ?Vulnerable? due to its patchy distribution, the low density of populations and extinction threats. Studies of the species have been limited, and the aims of this study were to investigate the spatial distribution with relationship to landscape, habitat and fire factors. The study was undertaken in the Eastern Otway Ranges, southern Victoria where the species was recorded at 42 sites (44% of survey sites). The sites were all located within 10 km of the coast, and located in vegetation ranging from sclerophyll communities (forest, woodland and heathland) to coastal shrublands dominated by sedges and grasses. Logistic regression models were generated for species occurrence and predictor variables. The most parsimonious model was selected and although there was an association between presence of S. leucopus with landsystem and altitude, support for the models was not strong. The relationship with altitude was negative, indicating a preference for lower elevations. Models developed for other fauna species have identified landscape variables as being strongly predictive of occurrence, indicating that variables other than those investigated may be more suitable in predicting occurrence of S. leucopus at a landscape level. S. leucopus was recorded at a high percentage of sites 6-15 years post-fire age, and at maximal relative abundance at 4-9 years, providing evidence that it prefers mid succession habitats.

This study investigated the distribution, habitat and population dynamics of the swamp antechinus (Antechinus minimus maritimus) in the eastern Otway Ranges. The species has a restricted, disjunct distribution and has been recorded at 25 sites between 1969 and 1999. All sites were located within 7 km of the coast, occurred at altitudes up to 80 m above sea level and within 10 m of a gully. Analysis of landscape site variables identified sun index as being significant in determination of the probability of occurrence of A. minimus. The presence of A. minimus is negatively associated with sun index, occuring at sites that have a southerly aspect and gentle slope. A. minimus was located in a range of structural vegetation including Open Forest, Low Woodland, Shrubland and Hummock Grassland and a number of floristic groups, some characterised by high frequencies of sclerophyll shrubs, others by high frequencies of Pteridium esculentum, hummock grasses and herbaceous species. A. minimus occurs in fragmented, small populations with maximum population densities of 1.1–18 ha–1. Populations at inland sites became extinct after the 1983 wildfire which burnt 41 000 ha. These sites have not been recolonised since, while on the coast the species did not re-establish until 1993–97. One population that is restricted to a narrow coastal strip of habitat is characterised by high levels of transient animals. The species is subject to extinction in the region due to habitat fragmentation, coastal developments and fire. Management actions to secure the present populations and ensure long-term survival of the species in the area are required and include implementation of appropriate fire regimes, prevention of habitat fragmentation, revegetation of habitat, and establishment of corridor habitat.

This study explores an excellent mid-latitude Oligocene calcareous neritic succession that spans the Eocene/Oligocene boundary to the Miocene. Rapid changes in sea level and climate should have a palpable influence on macroevolution and the Eocene-Oligocene transition marks one of the most substantial changes for the Cainozoic.Stratigraphic ranges of some 130 benthic and 20 planktic species occurring in two contrasting marine environments, one relatively restricted (low plankton - Murray Basin) and another more open (high plankton - Otway Basin) to oceanic processes, were identified and correlated with signals derived from changes in the physical environment. The signals include: the ‘Exxon’ sea-level curve, deep sea stable isotope curves, and prominent lithological changes.There is a significant turnover of species at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. This event impacts on all assemblages and correlation metrics indicate that there is an ‘across-the-board’ response. Interestingly, the turnover corresponds to a local Saint Vincent Basin lithological change from the grey-green, organic rich facies of the Blanche Point Formation to the red-yellow-brown, well oxidized, quartz and bryozoa rich facies of the Port Willunga Formation. This switch is in turn coincident with the saltatory positive deviation in the δ18O top and bottom water curves derived from oceanic sections.The turnover pattern is not repeated at the major sea level fall predicted for the mid Oligocene (at 30 million years), neither is there any comparable lithological transition. Geographically widespread species (common to all environments) cross this supposed prominent type one sequence boundary, there is a signal but the impact on the fauna is less than that detected for the Eocene/Oligocene boundary. Those faunas that were more restricted to open ocean processes exhibited shorter stratigraphic ranges and appeared to be controlled primarily by sea level fluctuation and salinity changes. There is evidence to suggest that foraminiferal faunas of the more restricted environment in southern Australia were less responsive to the well mixed, thermohaline driven ocean of the Oligocene. Generally, Oligocene benthic assemblages are dominated by Cibicides, Notorotalia and Buliminid species in consistently high numbers, indicating a high dominance of relatively few taxa, that is, large populations and low diversity. Faunas of open ocean assemblages demonstrate relatively subdued turnover patterns compared to those of more restricted environments.The Late Eocene displays parallel patterns of foraminiferal turnover and the Oligocene is characterised by inter-basin contrasts. In comparison to the Eocene, faunas appear to be more robust in the psychrosphere constrained ocean of the Oligocene. It is proposed that these patterns indicate that the Latest Eocene was dominated by species adapted to a specialist life strategy while the Oligocene reflect patterns more often associated with opportunist colonization.

Phytophthora cinnamomi is a soil-inhabiting ‘water mould’ that is pathogenic to many native plant species in Australia, and has been shown to alter plant species abundance and richness, as well as the structure of vegetation in sclerophyllous vegetation. This study investigated the effects of P. cinnamomi-induced vegetation disturbance and habitat degradation on microhabitat associations of small mammals in a coastal heathland in southern Australia. Seven small mammal species were trapped in a P. cinnamomi-infested heathland community over four years. Trap stations were classified into three disease classes (non-diseased, active disease and post-disease) and structural and floristic aspects of the vegetation were recorded at each station. The mean number of species captured was greatest in non-diseased areas and least in post-disease areas. The total capture frequency of small mammals was lower in post-disease areas except where they were covered by thick stands of tall tea-tree (Leptospermum sp.). Combined small mammal captures were associated with thick vegetation and floristic factors. Captures of Antechinus agilis, Rattus fuscipes, Rattus lutreolus and Sminthopsis leucopus were greatest in non-diseased vegetation and were less frequent in areas of diseased vegetation. A. agilis and R. fuscipes captures were correlated with a floristic factor associated with non-diseased vegetation, while R. lutreolus was associated with structural factors, preferring thick vegetation. The impact on Cercartetus nanus and Isoodon obesulus could not be assessed owing to low captures of these species. Modification of vegetation structure and floristics associated with P. cinnamomi infestation is having a significant impact on the habitat utilised by the small mammal communities in the area. This impact highlights the need to identify and protect those areas that remain free of P. cinnamomi infestation. Continued spread of the pathogen will reduce the area of suitable small-mammal habitat able to support the diverse communities of the eastern Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia.

Abstract This study considered the degree of genetic variation for diameter (DBH), basic density (BD), predicted pulp yield (PPY), fibre length (FL), microfibril angle (MFA) and cellulose content (CC) amongst eight subraces of Eucalyptus globulus growing in a field trial in NW Tasmania. There were significant subrace effects for BD, FL and CC. This variation affected the relative profitability of the subraces for pulp production. On average, the most profitable subraces (on NPV/ha over the base population mean) were Strzelecki Ranges ($862.04), Western Otways ($657.80) and Strzelecki Foothills ($576.81). The genetic control (heritability) of variation in DBH, FL and MFA was moderate (0.15 < h2< 0.27), while control for BD, PPY and CC was high (h2> 0.40). Genetic correlations between growth and wood properties were not statistically significant, except for DBHMFA (-0.86). Most genetic correlations amongst wood properties were outside the parametric space (< -1 or >1), but there were significant correlations between BDMFA (-0.70) and PPY-CC (0.82). The empirical response to selection on an index based on a pulp wood objective (which included volume and basic density) resulted in a gain of 4.3% for DBH, 7.9% for BD and marginal changes for all other traits, with a net impact in profit of $1,270/ha. However, future profit calculations will need to consider the effect of FL, MFA and CC on the economics of wood processing to fully evaluate the economic impact of breeding.

Abstract Low and variable capsule and seed set is a major factor limiting seed production in Eucalyptus globulus seed orchards. This study identified the relative contribution of the maternal and paternal parent to reproductive success in E. globulus, and examined the genetic basis to the observed variation. Reproductive success was measured in terms of the number of viable seeds obtained per flower crossed. Data on the reproductive success of numerous genotypes from the Furneaux, Strzelecki Ranges and Otways races were obtained from: (i) 12 years of operational full-sib crossing; (ii) a designed fullsib diallel mating scheme; and (iii) capsule retention trials conducted over three seasons at two Tasmanian seed orchards on the same ramets of different genotypes. Analysis of the sparse operational data revealed that both male and female factors significantly affected reproductive success, accounting for 5.0% and 7.9% of the variation respectively. The more precise diallel crossing revealed that a large, and significant, proportion 55%, of the variation in reproductive success between crosses at a single site was explained by the female parent. The male parent explained only 6.7%, but this effect was not statistically significant and was related to variation in in vitro pollen germination. The significant female effect was found to be consistent at the genotype level across seasons, sites and pollination techniques suggesting a genetic basis to the variation. It is argued that selection of genetically fecund females is a key consideration in reducing costs of manual pollination for breeding and deployment purposes.
