Abstract:
IoT- technology, Internet of Things, is a fast-growing business, it means that more and more products, clothes, even people are provided with sensors that can communicate and perceive the surroundings to create a smarter community. For companies to keep up to date, it is essential to continuously provide products with better components and reduced size. To stand out further, companies should provide revolutionary products, with totally new feature. One of these ideas, of a new kind of product with special features, have been investigated and developed in this thesis. The thesis has been conducted with the company CombiQ, located in Jönköping, Sweden. The product that was going to be developed was an industrial sensor, that uses the technology of IIoT, Industrial Internet of Things, that the company develops. At the time when this project took place, CombiQ did not sell any own product, only the technology that was placed inside the products. To develop the industrial sensor for CombiQ, not only the functions of the product had to be investigated, further the brand had to be analyzed to create a design expression reflecting the company. Through implement several tools and methods, from among other things the product development process and design thinking, a concept of an industrial sensor is presented that fulfill the specific requirements and functions. Where the main-feature is that the sensor should be a modular solution to be adjusted for the specific need of the clients. Furthermore, during the project a visual brand language with design guidelines have been developed to reflect the design aspects of the company CombiQ. Design guidelines can be used for further product for the company in the same manners, which also has been displayed by developing design concept of the rest of the industrial sensor that counts to the same product family as the modular sensor.
IoT-teknologi, Internet of Things, är en snabbt växande marknad, det innebär att mer och mer produkter, kläder, även människor förses med sensorer som i sin tur kan förstå omgivningen och kommunicera, detta för att skapa ett smartare samhälle. För att företag ska kunna vidhålla positionen på marknaden är det viktigt att hela tiden erbjuda produkter med bättre komponenter och mindre till storleken. För skapa en starkare position, företaget borde erbjuda revolutionerande produkter med unika egenskaper. Det är en av de här idéerna som har undersökts i det här examensarbetet. Arbetet har skett under ett samarbete med företaget CombiQ, belägen i Jönköping. Produkten som skulle tas fram var en industriell sensor, som skulle använda sig av IIoT-teknologin, Industrial Internet of Things, som företaget utvecklar. Tidpunkten när det här arbete utfördes, CombiQ hade inga egna produkter men all teknologi som sitter i sensorerna. För att ta fram en industriell sensor för CombiQ behövde inte bara möjligheterna att tillverka en produkt utefter funktionerna undersökas. Varumärket behövde även analyseras för att utveckla en produkt som uttrycker företaget och dess varumärke på rätt sätt. Genom att tillämpa metoder och verktyg från både produktutvecklingsprocesser och designprocesser, kunde ett koncept tas fram som uppfyllde de uppställda kraven och funktionerna. Den huvudsakliga funktionen i sensorn var att produkten skulle bestå av moduler och på det viset kunna justeras utefter vad kunden behöver. Vidare, under projektet har även CombiQ som varumärke undersökts och riktlinjer för designen har tagits fram som reflekterar företaget och dess varumärke. Design riktlinjerna kan användas för att ta fram ytterligare produkter med samma maner, vilket har visats i detta arbete genom att ta fram designkoncept på ytterligare produkter som räknas till samma produktfamilj som sensorn med moduler.

Abstract:
In light of greater emphasis on horizontal management and team-oriented approaches to product development/management, there is a growing need to better understand interdepartmental integration. To meet this need, this dissertation proposed a model of interdepartmental integration, which distinguished integration as a composite of interaction and collaboration. Incorporating contingency and sociotechnical theories, two main research propositions were developed and served as the foundation for the proposed model: 1) an individual department's attributes will influence its interaction behavior and 2) attribute differences between departments will influence departments' collaboration. A mail survey of marketing, manufacturing, and R&D managers in 860 electronics firms was undertaken to investigate these two propositions and the hypotheses associated with the proposed model. While study results did not convincingly support the given propositions nor a majority of hypotheses, results did indicate that collaboration has a primary influence on performance. Conversely, interaction was shown to have minimal influence on performance, and in certain cases, was shown to even reduce performance. Among other significant findings, interdependence and cooperative goals were identified as two key antecedents to collaboration. This dissertation therefore highlights the need for departments to work together (collaborate) versus simply forcing communication through meetings and documented information exchange (interaction). Collaboration appears to be a key means by which all departments and the entire company can achieve and maintain performance success.

Abstract:
This thesis sets out to analyse the effects of diverse forms of geographical location and network structures on industrial growth and business cycle co-movement. The initial focus is on the analysis of the effects of clusters on industrial growth to determine whether clusters can cope with industrial shocks. Next, in order to fully understand the complex relationships that characterise modem industries, the concept of industrial network is used to analyse the input- output global trade relationships to determine if the network characteristics of an industry can affect growth and co-movement. In that sense, this thesis offers a comprehensive review of the determinants of growth at industry level by analysing industrial growth in a broad range of settings; from a geographically-tied clusters definition to a broader network approach using novel techniques and datasets. On one hand, the results suggest that clusters are relatively neutral; they do not promote higher growth in the presence of a positive national shock and neither do they generate a lower probability of being hit adversely by an economic downturn; location alone may not capture the full scale of relationships that constitute a cluster. On the other hand, the empirical study of industrial networks suggests that some network characteristics affect industrial growth. The most important finding is that industries that have greater co-movement are also those that have higher rates of growth during periods of global economic expansion as well as exhibiting more rapid declines in the face of global economic contraction. If the centrality of an industry is revealed to be an important transmitter of both global economic growth and downturns, as this thesis suggests, then investigating these phenomena more deeply should be high on the global research agenda.

Abstract:
The use of low-power wireless sensors and actuators with networking support in in-dustry has increased over the past decade. New generations of microcontrollers, new hardware for communication, and the use of standardized protocols such as the Internet Protocol have resulted in more possibilities for interoperability than ever before. This in-creasing interoperability allows sensors and actuator nodes to exchange information with large numbers of peers, which is beneficial for creating advanced, flexible and reusable systems.The increase in interoperability has resulted in an increase in the number of possible attacks from malicious devices or users. For this reason, the use of encryption techniques to protect client and server communications has become mandatory. However, even with state-of-the-art encryption mechanisms, there is no protection that can control access to each particular service with fine-grained precision. The nodes within an industrial network of wireless sensors and actuators are resource-constrained embedded devices, and increasing interoperability therefore requires a higher level of computation capabil-ities. The nodes’ intrinsic limitations of memory and processing exert an adverse effect on power consumption and communication delays, resulting in a shorter battery life-time. Therefore, the standard computing solutions for Internet communications are not directly applicable, and new mechanisms to achieve security, scalability, dependability, interoperability and energy efficiency are needed.Sensor and actuator networks can transmit sensed data, but they also offer access to the actuators. Such accesses, presumably provided via services, require an access protection scheme. For this reason, the use of access control mechanisms is mandatory. Access control assists in the creation of customized services and access policies. These access policies can isolate access permissions to devices with different roles, such as production and maintenance.The main contribution of this thesis is a novel, efficient IoT framework for industrial applications, including design, implementation, and experimental validation. The frame-work includes features for communication protection, authentication, fine-grained access control, zero-configuration networking, and run-time reconfiguration. These technologies and their corresponding energy consumption data clearly demonstrate the feasibility of integrating a battery-operated IoT concept into a functional System of Systems. The provided data also pinpoint the most critical areas for improvement.

Abstract:

År 2000 startades ett samarbete mellan Wuhan i Kina och Borlänge Energi i Sverige. De två parterna bestämde år 2005 tillsammans med IVL, Svenska Miljöinstitutet, att samarbeta inom följande områden; hållbar energiproduktion, hållbar avfallsproduktion samt grundandet av ett miljöteknikcentrum i Wuhan. Miljöteknikcentrumet är till för att vara en plattform för svensk miljöteknik och expertis. Som ett första steg inför grundandet av ett miljöteknikcentrum gjordes en undersökning för att se inom vilka sektorer svensk miljöteknik kan etableras.

Undersökningen var inriktat på industriell avloppsvattenrening i Wuhan; bedömning av vilka typer av industrier/företag som har problem med avloppsvattenreningen och i vilken utsträckning det finns svenska tekniklösningar på problemen. Undersökningen genomfördes genom intervjuer med myndigheter och en del utvalda företag. Det var svårt att få fram information om vilka företag som inte följer de kinesiska gränsvärdena, varför en del besök gjordes till företag som lever upp till gränsvärdena. På grund av detta togs även andra problem med miljön som företagen hade upp. Några kommunala reningsverk besöktes och intervjuades också för att få en bättre bild av den kommunala vattenreningssituationen. En generell beskrivning av Wuhans miljösituation utfördes också samt en beskrivning av de viktigaste miljömyndigheterna och institutionerna.

Wuhans största utmaning är att konstruera reningsverk till alla de 3.5 miljoner som fortfarande släpper sitt avloppsvatten rätt ut till sjöar och floder, snarare än att ytterligare rena det industriella avloppsvattnet. Behandlingsgraden av det industriella avloppsvattnet har nått 97 % medan behandlingsgraden av det kommunala avloppsvattnet endast nått 70 %.

Besök vid de utvalda företagen och kommunala reningsverk ledde till slutsatsen att svensk teknik och expertis kan införas i följande områden: hantering av slam från reningsverk, byggandet av förbränningsanläggningar för sopor och hur man löser problemet med att rena luften från gaser som SO2 och dioxiner. De flesta företagen kunde följa de kinesiska gränsvärdena för utsläpp av avloppsvatten men mycket kan göras för att förbättra företagens tekniker ytterligare. Detta utförs dock nästan aldrig eftersom det är en ekonomisk fråga. Det är möjligt för Wuhan att sätta lokala, hårdare gränsvärlden för att tvinga företagen att förbättra sina reningstekniker ytterligare.


In 2000 a co-operation between Wuhan in China and Borlänge Energi in Sweden started. The two parts decided in 2005 together with IVL, the Swedish Research Institute, to co-operate in the fields of sustainable energy production, sustainable waste management and the establishment of an Environmental Technology Centre, supplying Swedish environmental expertise to companies in Wuhan. As a first step for the establishment of an Environmental Technology Centre in Wuhan, an investigation was made to find out in which sectors Swedish environmental technology could be established.

The investigation took aim at observing the industrial wastewater treatment in Wuhan and to see which types of companies that have problems with the wastewater treatment and if there existed Swedish technology that could solve the problems. The investigation was performed through interviews with the authorities and some selected companies. It was difficult to get information about companies that did not comply with the National Chinese wastewater standards. This meant that some of the visits were made to companies that comply with the standards, also taking into consideration other problems with the environment that the companies might have. Visits were also paid to municipal wastewater treatment plants to get an overview over the municipal wastewater treatment situation. An overall survey of the environmental situation in Wuhan was also made and a presentation of the most important environmental departments and institutions is given.

The greatest challenge for Wuhan is to construct wastewater treatment plants for the around 3.5 million people that still discharge their wastewater directly to rivers and lakes, rather than to improve the industrial wastewater treatment further. The treatment rate of the industrial wastewater has reached 97%, but the municipal wastewater treatment rate has only reached 70%.

After the visits to the selected companies and municipal wastewater treatment plants the conclusion was made that Swedish technologies and expertise can be applied to the following areas; handling sludge from the wastewater treatment plants, construction of waste incineration plants and handling flue gas and dioxins. Most of the visited companies could follow the wastewater standards. Although much can be done to improve their technologies further, this is not done since it is too expensive. It is possible for Wuhan to apply stricter local wastewater treatment standards. This could be used as a tool to make companies invest more money in improvements of their technologies.

Abstract:
The goals of this thesis are the characterization of polymer melts using mainly non-linear shear and extensional rheological techniques. The fabrication of scaffolds with excellent physical and mechanical properties using solution electrospinning technology for tissue engineering applications and the development of melt electrospinning equipment to facilitate the fabrication of solvent free scaffolds. To achieve the first goal, we focused on the characterization of entangled polymer melts in the linear and nonlinear viscoelastic regimes. The influence of molecular weight, Mw, molecular weight distribution (MWD), long-chain branching (LCB) and addition of particles to the polymer matrix on polymer melt properties were investigated using shear and extensional rheological techniques. The resulting structure-property relationships were established using newly introduced mechanical parameters under large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) flow.

In recent years the popularity of biofuels has been transformed from a sustainable option fortransportation to a questionable and criticized method. Many reports have therefore beenproduced to view biofuel production from a life cycle perspective; though results may bemisleading. In a number of the reports, biofuel production is viewed in a linear manner, i.e.crops and energy in and biofuel out. However there is a large quantity of material and energyflows associated with biofuel production and these must be accounted for.Industrial symbiosis concepts have therefore been applied in this thesis to the biofuel industryto identify possibilities to improve the material and energy flows. This has been done bymapping the exchanges and thereafter identifying possible synergies between biofuel firmsand with external industries. Examples from regional biofuel synergies and exchanges withindustrial partners have been highlighted. Many of the concepts have led to the identificationof methods for increased integration and improvements, including the use of a renewableenergy provider and the cooperation with external industries. Biofuels have therefore beenfound to profit from wastes, and instead of competition, benefit from one another, contrary tobelief. This leads to an expanded market of raw materials for biofuel production.Benefits do not only occur for the biofuel industry; from the application of biofuels, industrialsymbiosis may gain further benefits. Several new concepts have been produced in this thesisto account for the unique material handling possibilities that biofuel production firmsencompass. These include using biofuels as upcyclers of materials and the use of renewableenergy as a way to improve environmental performance. Furthermore, a classification methodhas been produced to add more detail about individual exchanges for the industrial symbiosisliterature in addition to viewing industrial symbiosis from an expanded system view toinclude exchanges beyond geographic proximity typical to the field.

Abstract:
Since 1997, Hong Kong as an international financial center has experienced several financial storms. Whenever it was in the storm, the Government found reliance on finance and real estate unreliable and sought the need to diversify its economic mode. However, as soon as the storm was over, the Government forgot the need and continues to focus on financial development. In 2009, in view of the international financial crisis, the Chief Executive (CE) identified 6 priority industries as the new growth drives to propel Hong Kong towards a knowledge-based economy. In parallel, the Policy Address 2009 endorsed the Government would take “appropriate policies to remove obstacles to their development” (para.21) and “examine whether the existing use of resources can support the new economic structure, and to prevent the factors of production from being tied up by outdated policies and economic structure.” (para.22) Subsequently, CE suggested that diversified development should be a strategic move to achieve sustainable economic growth. To utilize the land resources for the 6 industries? development, the Government launches 4 measures to release the potential of 1000 industrial buildings. Its intention is good. Yet, the result will be much better if there are cohesive policy and measures to synchronize the needs and the strengths of the industries. Among the 6 priority industries to utilize the industrial land, this dissertation targets primarily on cultural and creative industries (CCI) which may collaborate with other industries, such as education and tourism to develop cultural tourism and an education center with a view to forming a CCI park in a post-industrial area. This dissertation divides itself into three. The first part evaluates CCI, urban industrial heritage buildings and their combination; the second examines 4 local case studies, Cattle Depot, JCCAC, Fotan and LoftStage as well as 6 Shanghai ones. The third and final part devises a preliminary but innovative model of how to develop a post-industrial area into a sustainable CCI park with various potentials and resources concerted in Hong Kong.

Setting against the significant background of Industrial 4.0, the Industrial Control System (ICS) accelerates and enriches the upgrade the existing production infrastructure. To make the infrastructures “smart”, huge parts of manual operations have been automated in this upgrade and more importantly, the isolated controlled processes have been connected through ICS. This has also raised the issues in asset management and security concerns. Being the starting point of securing the ICS, the asset identification is, nevertheless, first dealt by exploring the definition of assets in the ICS domain due to insufficient documentation and followed by the introduction of ICS constituents and their statuses in the whole network. When the definition is clear, a well-received categorization of assets in the ICS domain is introduced, while mapping out their important attributes and their significance relating the core of service they perform. To effectively tackle the ever-increasing amount of assets, identification approaches are compared and a case study was performed to test the effectiveness of two open source software. Apart from the identification part, this thesis describes a framework for efficient asset management from CRR. The four cyclic modules proposed give an overview on how the asset management should be managed according the dynamics of the assets in the production environment.

Abstract:

Målet med detta examensarbete var att ta fram en sittmöbel för utomhusbruk, som man kan ha ute i trädgården, på verandan eller balkongen. Syftet var att utöka Mazes produkt sortiment och göra en möbel som speglar företaget. Materialet är tråd av stål och är så pass stark att trots dess tunnhet att man kan bygga stabila konstruktioner. Tre skiss koncept togs fram och två av dessa tre valdes tillsammans med företaget att gå vidare med. Efter att ha utvecklat de båda stolarna så var Kent Johansson på Maze nöjd. En av stolarna, dvs koncept två har på Backstigs tillverkats i skala 1:1. Stolarna kommer ha en sittdyna som tillverkas i filt. Dynan kommer bestå av två lagar för att få en styvhet och en mjukhet på dynan. Dynan till koncept två kommer inte behöva formpressas med däremot så kommer dynan till koncept tre att formpressas efter stolens form.Resultatet blev två olika stolar för Maze. Båda stolarna är till för att stå utomhus, men går lika väl att använda på altanen eller balkongen.

Syftet med detta projekt var att ta fram ett säljande koncept av flaskan och även etiketten till mineralvatten. Problemet med dagens vattenflaskor som finns på den ryska marknaden är att samtliga har liknande utseende, form och riktar sig till samma målgrupp. Målgruppen flaskorna riktar sig till är sportintresserade människor och de som lever ett aktivt liv. Till 90 procent är flaskorna gjorda utav PET -plast.

Målsättningen för mitt projektarbete var att produkten ska säljas till restauranger/krogar, caféer, utställningar, hotell, mässor och vid andra speciella tillfällen. Tanken är att skapa och erbjuda en exklusivare produkt för kunderna och därmed kunna öka vattnets värde. Företaget ska även kunna öka produktionen av produkter på den nuvarande marknaden och konkurrera med andra företag i samma bransch.

Med hjälp av en referensgrupp och undersökningar har jag tagit fram en vattenflaska i glas med en aluminium skruvkork och etikett som skiljer sig från de befintliga vattenflaskorna.


The aim of this project was to develop a new, more exclusive concept of packaging and labels for mineral water. The main problem with today's bottles for water which we have on the russian market, is that bottles have the same form, are very similar to each other, are intended mainly for the same target group, with sport interests and active way of life and that almost all bottles are made of plastic (PET). The goal for my project is to create a new variant of bottles for water that will be selling to restaurants, café, pubs, fares and other special occasions and to increase value of water through developing a more exclusive product. Using the reference group and studies I have produced a bottle for water which is made of glass, has an aluminium screwing cork and designed label which is different from the other products in the same trade.

Tillsammans med Konsthantverkcentrum (KHVC) ska ett förpackningskoncept skapas somgör svenska konsthantverkares produkter mer attraktiva, förena konsthantverkare runtom Sverige och göra dem konkurrenskraftigare internationellt. Förpackningskonceptet måste passa så många konsthantverk som möjligt oavsett material p.g.a. att produkterna inte kommer i stora serier, de är i många fall rent unika. Till en början har uppgiften analyserats och avgränsats till att se till tre konsthantverkskooperativs förhållning och behov för att sätta en kravspecifikation på förpackningen. Faktainsamlingen har bestått av att ta fram all information om dagens förpackningar av konsthantverk, både inom och utom kooperativen. Genomförande har bestått av skisser och formanalyser som till slut tagit fram en flexibel standardförpackning som kan packa många former och storlekar. Resultatet är en ny produkt som ska konkurrera med dagens förpackningsprodukter i design, metod och pris.

In industry, there is a constant demand for increased productivity in order to stay competitive. Still, Swedish industry has an average utilization of about 60% in its production systems. One important factor for increasing the equipment utilization is effective maintenance of production assets.

Within process industry a strategic view on maintenance activities is common and most companies regard maintenance as a profit centre. Meanwhile, the discrete units manufacturing industry still in many cases view maintenance as a cost driver. However, with the spread of Toyota-inspired production concepts, the manufacturing industry is beginning to view maintenance as a strategic asset. Still, though, many companies have no formulated maintenance strategy.

The main purpose of the research, presented in this thesis, has been to develop a work-process for formulation of effective maintenance strategies for enterprises in the manufacturing industry.

Through one descriptive and two prescriptive case studies a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies has been developed. The descriptive study revealed some of the differences between companies with and without maintenance strategies. It also showed how some companies view the strategic contributions of maintenance. The first prescriptive study showed how stakeholder involvement may contribute to the identification of relevant performance measures for the maintenance activities. Stakeholder involvement also contributes to the organizational acceptance of the maintenance strategy. Last, the second prescriptive case study led to the development of a work-process for formulation of maintenance strategies. The work-process was tested and verified in three companies, handling different challenges for their maintenance activities. All three companies intend to use the formulated maintenance strategy as a road map for the development of their production maintenance.

Wipro Infrastructure Engineering i Östersund, tillverkare av hydraulcylindrar, vill anpassa tillverkningen av två högvolymsprodukter i det manuella produktionsflödet genom resurssnålare tillverkning för att möta det nya kundkravet om en ledtid på 48 timmar mot tidigare ledtid på 10 arbetsdagar.

Produktionen av hydraulcylindrarna Reach och Sideshift kan delas in i en sekvens om fyra processteg; maskinbearbetning av cylinderrör och kolvstång, svetsning, montering och slutligen lackering och packning.

Värdeflödeskartor över det nuvarande tillståndet för hydraulcylindrarna Reach och Sideshift visade att den värdeskapande tiden i processerna stod för 2,1 % och 1,6 % av ledtiden för Reach respektive Sideshift. Genom observationer identifierades slöserier främst i lager och väntan.  Aktiviteter som inte tillför värde men som är nödvändiga identifierades främst i materialförsörjningen av tillsatsmaterial till processerna. Arbetsinnehållet och arbetsmängden till respektive process styrs genom produktionsberedning i ett MPS-system. Varje process arbetar individuellt utan hänsyn till behovet i nästa process. Detta medför att produktionsprocesserna upplevs som isolerade öar som trycker fram material genom hela tillverkningen.

Med värdeflödeskartor av nuvarande tillstånd som grund och med Lean-metodik som angreppsätt, skapades värdeflödeskartor som visar på ett önskat framtida tillstånd. Ett flertal förbättringsåtgärder genomfördes i syfte att reducera upptäckta icke-värdeskapande aktiviteter i material- och informationsflödet. Flera produktionsprocesser kopplades samman för att bilda en produktionscell. En supermarket för bearbetade cylinderrör och kolvstänger som stödjer FIFU infördes. Kanbanstyrning av tillsatsmaterial implementerades. En kanban-tavla sattes upp för att förenkla informationsflödet och ett kontrollerat lager av färdiga produkter infördes.

Resultaten av förbättringsåtgärderna visar på en minskning av ledtiden genom hela värdeflödet med 50 % för båda produkterna till 4,1 dagar. Andelen värdeskapande aktiviteter ökade med 43 % och 69 % för Reach respektive Sideshift. Seriestorlekarna minskade med 65 % och tiden från start av order i produktionscellen till färdig produkt tar endast 20 timmar.

Slutsatserna från resultatet visar på att ett resurssnålt, förbrukningsstyrt och sammanlänkat värdeflöde går att uppnå med hjälp av metoder och verktyg inom Lean. Ett väsentligt steg i ledtidsreduktion har uppnåtts och författarens åsikt är att företaget genom fortsatt arbete med Lean kan nå en ledtid på 48 timmar.


Wipro Infrastructure Engineering Östersund, manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders, wants to adapt the production of two high volume products in the manual product line. Through Lean methods, the aim is to reduce the lead time in order to meet new customer requirements of lead times of 48 hours. The currently agreed lead time from order to delivery is ten days.

The production of the hydraulic cylinders Reach and Sideshift can be divided into four subsequent steps; machining the cylinder tube and piston rod, welding, assembling and finally painting and packaging of the final product.

Value stream maps resembling the current state for Reach and Sideshift showed that the ratio between value-adding time and total lead time was a mere 2.1 percent for Reach and 1.6 percent for Sideshift. Through observations waste was identified primarily in inventory and in waiting. Non-value adding but necessary activities were mainly found in activities concerning supply of material to the processes. The work orders are dealt to each process through an MPS-system. Each process works individually without consideration to the needs of connecting processes. This causes each production process to behave like an isolated part pushing rather than pulling material through the production.

By using value stream maps of the current state as a foundation for improvements, and with a Lean approach, value stream maps of a desired future state were drawn. Several measures were taken to improve the processes by reducing non-value adding activities in the material- and information flow. Several production processes were linked by creating a production cell. A supermarket supporting FIFO for machined tubes and rods was introduced. Kanban was implemented for supply of material to the processes. A kanban whiteboard is used to simplify the flow of information and a limited inventory of finished products was installed.

The results of the measures taken for improvements show that the lead time through the value stream was reduced by 50 percent to 4.1 days for both products. The value-adding ratio increased by 43 percent for Reach and 69 percent for Sideshift. Batch sizes were reduced by 65 percent and the time from starting an order in the production cell to finished product now only takes 20 hours.

Conclusions based on the results clearly show that a Lean pull production and connected processes can be achieved by using Lean methods and tools. A significant step in lead time reduction has been achieved and it is the author’s opinion that the company, through continued work with Lean measures, can achieve a lead time of 48 hours.

Ländryggen är det medicinska namnet på ryggens nedre del, ungefär från revbenen till höften. Ont i ländryggen kan oftast behandlas bra hos en osteopat eller eventuellt hos en kiropraktor eller naprapat. En vanlig behandling de gör då, är att de sträcker ut ländryggen på personen ifråga. Detta för att ländkotorna i ländryggen ska sträckas ut och få avlastning. Genom att dra ut ländryggen ökar cirkulationen och belastningen minskar. Dessvärre är det dyra besök det handlar om och man får ofta långa väntetider föratt få komma dit. Ett besök räcker heller inte, utan det handlar om återbesök ett antal gånger. Många människor drar sig därför för att gå och har då också kvar smärtan en längre tid. De produkter som finns för privat bruk idag, för att sträcka ut ländryggen, är antingen dyra, klumpiga eller känns osäkra. Detta projekt handlar om att utforma en ryggsträckare som kan göra utsträckningen säkert, enkelt och vara billigare än de dyra produkter som finns idag. Produkten ska vara för privatpersoner, för användning i egna hemmet, för att kunna bestämma själv när och var de vill sträcka ut ländryggen. Detta är en möjlighet till självhjälp, mestadels för de som arbetar med tunga lyftsom får ont i ländryggen.

Manne Bouveng, CEO of Optimel AB had an idea for a new kind of storage cabinet that could be adapted especially for townhouse owners. I came in contact with Manne by a familiar friend for us; we met and decided that it would suit as my thesis. What was needed to be done was a market research that would possibly show that there was a need for a new kind of storage cabinet on the market. Because of this we continued to work on the basic idea. We came up with a solution where we developed a box that resembles Optimels known mailbox Biggi Rondo, the storage cabinet is a new solution of a storage cabinet, adapted after a market that need of a lot of new space. The solution is based on a simple construction which sits an inside hang-off device which can attach tool hooks, tool holders and shelves and so on. The purpose of the assignment was to develop a new type of storage cabinet with some kind of solution to attach tools and other garden related stuff. With this we have succeeded and the concept meets the requirements we set ourselves at the beginning of the project.
Manne Bouveng, VD för Optimel AB hade en idé om ett nytt slags förvaringsskåp som skulle vara anpassat framförallt för radhusägare. Jag kom i kontakt med Manne via en bekant till oss, vi träffades och bestämde oss för att det skulle passa bra som mitt examensarbete. Det som behövde göras var en marknadsundersökning som eventuellt skulle visa på att det fanns ett behov av ett nytt slags förvaringsskåp. I och med detta fanns det underlag för att gå vidare med grundidén. Vi kom fram till en lösning där vi har utvecklat ett förvaringsskåp som påminner om Optimels kända postlåda Rondo. Förvaringsskåpet är en lösning som har anpassats efter vad som oftast skapar oreda i trädgården. Lösningen baseras på en grundkonstruktion med en hängningsanordning inuti, där man kan fästa verktygskrokar, redskapshållare och hyllor. Ändamålet med uppgiften var att utveckla ett nytt slags förvaringsskåp med en upphängningslösning för verktyg och andra objekt. Detta har vi lyckats med och konceptet uppfyller de krav vi satt upp i början av projektet.

Analogue photography is something that many thought died out in the beginning of the 21’st century as a result of the digital revolution. But that’s not the case. As the digital revolution swept over the world a movement of analogue cameras, and so called toycams grew bigger. A toycam was a low quality, plastic, analogue camera, made to be manufactured and sold as cheaply as possible without any considerations of quality. Pictures produced by the camera are often soft focused with intense color changes and contrasts. Every once in a while an orange yellowish field will show up on the photos. This is caused by light leaks caused by the poor quality of the construction of the camera. While these qualities may be considered flaws they’re actually much of the reason to why people use and like toy cameras.  During the last ten years new production of old toycam models and completely new analogue cameras has been picked up. Every year a handful of new cameras enter the market and the interest and movement around toycams just seems to grow the further in to the digital era we get. But despite this, I as a dedicated toycam enthusiast, don’t sense that any real development is happening in the area. The movement is at a standstill.  The objective of the project has been to look for and develop something new, a new function that adds something to the market and movement. This has been done with the design process. The market has been studied and different concepts of form and functions have been developed. Users have been involved during the whole process, including during the final selection of concept. The result is a contemporary camera with discrete inspiration from cameras of the 50s’. But the main thing with the camera is a for compact- and toy cameras whole new feature – exchangeable film cartridges! Film can now be changed, in the middle of a roll in just a few seconds. Perfect when one wants to change film type or just don’t have the time to reload the camera! Flexibility!

Monitoring of industrial gas turbines is of vital importance, since it gives valuable information for the customer about maintenance, performance, and process health. The performance of an industrial gas turbine degrades gradually due to factors such as environment air pollution, fuel content, and ageing to mention some of the degradation factors. The compressor in the gas turbine is especially vulnerable against contaminants in the air since these particles are stuck at the rotor and stator surface. The loss in compressor performance, due to fouling, can partially be restored by an on-line/off-line compressor wash. If the actual health state of the gas turbine is known, it is possible to efficiently plan the service and maintenance and thereby reduce the environmental impact and the fuel cost for the customer. A thermodynamic gas turbine modeling package, called GTLib, is developed in the equation-based object-oriented modeling language Modelica. Using the GTLib package, a gas turbine model can be constructed. The gas turbine model can be used for performance calculation and as a base when diagnosis tests are generated. These tests can be used in a diagnosis and supervision system to detect compressor fouling and abrupt sensor faults. One of the benefits with using GTLib is the ability to model a lean stoichiometric combustion at different air/fuel ratio. Using the air/fuel ratio concept, an arbitrary number of gas species in the in-coming air can be considered. The number of equations is reduced if the air/fuel ratio concept is considered instead of modeling each gas species separately. The difference in the number of equations is significant if many gas species are considered. When the gas turbine components deteriorate, a mismatch between the nominal performance model and the measurements increase. To handle this, the gas turbine model is augmented with a number of estimation parameters. These estimation parameters are used to detect slow deterioration in the gas turbine components and are estimated with a Constant Gain Extended Kalman Filter (CGEKF). The state estimator is chosen using structural methods before an index reduction of the model is performed. Experimental data is investigated and it is shown that the performance degradation due to compressor fouling can be estimated. After the compressor is washed, the performance of the compressor is partially restored. An abrupt sensor fault of 1% of the nominal value is introduced in the discharge temperature of the compressor. The sensor fault can be detected using the CUSUM algorithm for change detection. Finally, the overall thesis contribution is the calculation chain from a simulation model used for performance calculation to a number of test quantities used in a diagnosis and supervision system. Since the considered gas turbine model is a large non-linear DAE model that has unobservable state variables, the test construction procedure is automatically performed with developed parsers.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine if the sector of industrial investments has been transformed over the last decade and if so, in which ways this transformation has happened. Digitalization has changed the business environment in a revolutionary manner and this phenomenon needs to be explored since it is new and rapidly growing. The author will attempt to connect the industrial investments’ field with sustainability and find out in what ways sustainability is affected by the transformation mentioned above. The study was performed in Sweden and refers to the Swedish market. The research concludes that industrial investments have been significantly transformed and have become more opportunistic. Short-term profit drives the majority of investment decisions as the main decision makers are continuously being replaced by others while sustainability is not taken under consideration. This situation will likely change either by ambitious governmental initiatives or by a change in the masses’ everyday behavior towards consciously sustainable choices.

As part of the development process for new stamping dies, in the automotive sheet metal forming (SMF) industry, the majority of all forming operations are simulated with the Finite Element Method (FEM) before the dies are manufactured. Today, these simulations are conducted with rigid tools under the assumption that there are no tool deformations. However, research shows that tool deformations have an influence on the finished product. In real production these deformations are compensated by manual rework during the try-out. Additional reason for simulating with rigid dies is that there are non-existing simulation methods elaborated for elastic stamping dies. Also, simulation of elastic tools requires high computational power.     Since simulations today are performed with rigid stamping dies the purpose of this work is to investigate the conditions of how to conduct SMF-simulations with elastic stamping dies. The object that will be studied is a stamping die for a Volvo XC90 inner door used in a single-action press. This work is part of the development to minimize the manual rework, with the goal to compensate for tool deformations in a virtual environment.    Results for rigid stamping dies in LS-Dyna was compared to currently used AutoForm as a pre-study. A simple model was then created to find a suitable method while using elastic stamping dies. The developed method was used for an industrial size stamping die.     Since there are little amount of research performed on simulations using elastic stamping dies, elasticity and complexity were gradually introduced into the FE-model. As a first step, only the punch was included as an elastic solid. Secondly, the die was added. Finally, the entire die was simulated as elastic together with the hydraulic cushion of the press. When the FE-model worked as expected a suitable method for minimizing the simulation time with acceptable results was studied.     Comparisons of measured- and simulation results show a high correlation. To improve the results from the FE-model factors such as press deformations, advanced friction models, etc. should be included.    Conclusions from this work shows that it is possible to perform SMF-simulations with elastic stamping dies. As the computational time normally is high this work also presents a method first step to reduce the computational time with acceptable results. Comparisons between simulations with rigid and elastic stamping dies proves that there are significant differences in the outcome of the two methods.

Abstract:
Metals have been used by humans for thousands of years, and this has resulted in increased concentrations in the biosphere. The environment around point-sources, such as mines and smelters, are of particular concern, as metals may accumulate to high concentrations, and potentially reach levels toxic to the local flora and fauna. This thesis focuses on the effects on pied flycatcher populations of two such point-sources, a lead mine and enrichment plant, and a sulfide ore smelter. Mining activities at the lead mine ceased in 2001 and pied flycatcher populations were assessed before and after the closure. At the sulfide ore smelter, pied flycatchers were studied during the 1980s. Since then, the metal emissions to air from the smelter (e.g. arsenic, cadmium, copper, mercury, lead and zinc) have been greatly reduced (by 93 – 99%). Pied flycatchers from these two contaminated environments differed in their responses to reduced atmospheric deposition. At the mine site, nestling responses reflected the reduced atmospheric deposition and less lead accumulated in their tissues. However, lead levels were still high enough to cause negative effects on blood status (δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase [ALAD], hemoglobin [Hb], hematocrit [ht], and mean cell hemoglobin concentration) and reproduction (reduced clutch size, increased mortality and reduced breeding success), as was observed when the mine was in operation. Along the pollution gradient away from the smelter, nestling concentrations reflected the metal load in the soil pool, accumulating over time, rather than the atmospheric deposition. This resulted in only a minor response to decreased metal deposition (slightly reduced liver lead concentrations at 3.5 – 90 km from the smelter). This suggests that in environments with highly polluted soils, decreased inputs of atmospheric metal deposition have only minor impacts, and recovery from contamination should not be expected within decades. The high metal concentrations in the vicinity of the smelter contributed to poorer blood status (ALAD, Hb and ht), induced oxidative damage and defenses, and decreased reproduction (increased mortality and reduced breeding success). There were only minor improvements in blood and reproductive variables at 3.5 km from the smelter.
Metaller är grundämnen som inte kan bildas eller förstöras av människan. De förekommer i mineraler i berggrunden och finns överallt på jorden. Människans användning av metaller har dock medfört att de återfinns i högre halter i miljön än de annars skulle gjort. Trots att metallerna kan spridas och transporteras långa sträckor med luftmassorna, är det främst kring källorna, såsom metallindustrier, man kan hitta metaller i tillräckligt höga halter för att orsaka skada på växter och djur. I denna avhandling presenteras undersökningar av hur svartvit flugsnappare (Ficedula hypoleuca) påverkas kring två metallindustrier i norra Sverige. Det ena är en numera nedlagd blygruva med anrikningsverk i Laisvall, där vi studerade populationer av svartvit flugsnappare före och efter att industrin stängdes. Det andra är smältverket Rönnskärsverken, utanför Skelleftehamn, som varit i drift sedan 1930-talet. I föroreningsgradienten från smältverket studerades effekter av 20 års kraftigt minskade metallutsläpp till luften som följd av förbättrade reningstekniker. Resultaten kring industrierna visar att fåglarna svarade olika på de minskade metallutsläppen. Kring blygruvan minskade halterna av bly i flugsnapparungar med samma takt som nedfallen (mätt i mossa) och bytesdjuren (myror). Däremot, kring smältverket, var fåglarna fortfarande exponerade för höga halter av de giftiga ämnena arsenik, kadmium, kvicksilver och bly, på i princip samma nivåer som 20 år tidigare, trots att utsläppen minskat med 93 – 98%. Orsaken till detta tros vara skillnader på föroreningsgraden i markens översta lager, mårskiktet. Vi kunde visa att flugsnapparna kring smältverket främst fick i sig metallerna från marken, som efter flera årtionden med utsläpp från industrin innehöll mycket höga metallhalter. Detta kan förklara att fåglarna trots att utsläppen var låga, fortfarande var utsatta för stor metallexponering. Det snabba svaret på minskad metallspridning (bly och zink) som flugsnapparna vid blygruvan visade, antar vi berodde på att mindre mäng metaller fanns i marken. Trots minskningen var metallhalterna i fåglarna vid gruvområdet fortfarande tillräckligt höga för att, liksom vid smältverket, påverka fåglarnas hälsa. De uppvisade bl.a. låga blodvärden och tecken på oxidativ stress. Vidare var ungdödligheten förhöjd, vilket ledde till lägre häckningsframgång. Slutsatsen är att markens innehåll av metaller har stor betydelse för återhämtningsförloppet för svartvit flugsnappare efter minskat metallnedfall, och att en relativt snabb återhämtning kan förväntas i områden med något lägre metallhalter i mårskiktet, medan återhämtning i områden där marken är kraftigt förorenad inte kan förväntas förrän efter flera årtionden, även om nedfallet upphört nästan helt.

The scientific studies associated with material engineering and device miniaturization are the core concepts for future technology innovation. The exploring and tailoring of material properties of amorphous magnetic microwires, recently, have revealed remarkable high sensitive magnetic field sensitivity down to the picoTesla regime at room temperature. This superior magnetometer is highly promising for active sensing and real-time monitoring building block for modern industrial devices and healthcare applications. The low-field, high sensitivity regime of the GMI response over a wide frequency range (1 MHz - 1 GHz) in the Co-rich melt-extracted microwires was optimized through novel Joule annealing methods (single- and multi-step current annealing techniques). Optimization of current value through multi-step current annealing (MSA) from 20 mA to 100 mA for 10 minutes is the key to improving the GMI ratio, and its field sensitivity up to 760% and 925%/Oe at f ≈ 20 MHz. The respective GMI ratio and field sensitivity are 1.75 times and 17.92 times higher than those of the as-prepared counterpart. The employment of the MSA technique successfully enhances the surface domain structures of the Co-rich microwires. This alternative tailoring method is suitable for improving the GMI sensitivity for a small field detection. The high sensitive response of the GMI to a weak magnetic field is highly promising for biomedical sensing applications. Real-time monitoring of position, motion, and rotation of a non-stationary object is crucial for product packaging, conveying, tracking, and safety compliance in industrial applications. The effectiveness of current sensing technology is limited by sensing distance and messy environments. A new class of high-frequency GMI-based sensor was designed and fabricated using the optimal Co-rich microwire. The impedance spectrum from the optimal sensing element showed a high GMI ratio and high field sensitivity response at low magnetic fields. The GMI sensor based longitudinal effect was found to be more sensitive than the commercially available Gaussmeters. The practical utility of the high sensitivity of the miniaturized sensor at weak magnetic fields for far-off distance monitoring of position, speed and gear rotating was demonstrated. This GMI-based sensor is highly promising for real-time position detection, oscillatory motion monitoring, and predictive failure of a rotating gear for industrial applications. Monitoring the rate of respiration and its pattern is crucial to assessing an individual’s health or progression of an illness, creating a pressing need for fast, reliable and cost-effective monitors. A new sensor based on a magnetic coil, which is made of Co-rich melt-extracted microwire for the detection of small magnetic fields was fabricated. The 3 mm diameter coil is wound from a Co-rich magnetic microwire. Unlike some typical solenoids, the MMC is sensitive to small magnetic fields due to a significant change in impedance attributed to the high-frequency giant magneto-impedance (GMI) effect. An application of the MMC sensor for the detection of a position-varying source of a small magnetic field (~0.01 – 10 Oe) in real-time bio-mechanical movement monitoring in human was demonstrated. This newly developed MMC magneto-LC resonance technology is highly promising for active respiratory motion monitoring, eye movement detection and other biomedical field sensing applications.

Mycelial pellet formation by filamentous fungi is one of the most researched topics in fungal biotechnology research. Pellets are generally formed as a result of a complex interaction process through the influence of many cultivation factors such as inoculum size, pH, dissolved oxygen level, agitation system, nucleating agents, additives, trace metals, CO2, temperature, reactor types, carbon substrate, rheology, culture modes, fermenter geometry, nitrogen and phosphate levels etc. Each factor has varying effects on the growth morphologies of different fungal species. Fungal growths in the form of pellets have several advantages and pose a potential solution to overcome the problems associated with the filamentous fungal growth in large scale industrial bioreactors. The aim of the present work was to study pellet formation of edible filamentous fungus Neurospora intermedia, focusing on the molecular aspects of the fungal pellets with special interest to investigate the role of cell signaling second messenger cyclic 3', 5’-adenosine mono- phosphate (cAMP). It was found that Neurospora intermedia stimulate cAMP in the pellet form than filamentous form. The industrial applications of fungal pellets for generating value added products were also studied and observed fermentation in individual and co fermented first and second-generation ethanol substrate, showed an ethanol yield maximum of 0.25 ± 0.05 g/g dry substrate. The growth of fungal pellets in presence of inhibitors (such as acetic acid, HMF and furfural) resulted in about 11% to 45% increase in ethanol production as compared to filamentous forms, at similar growth conditions in the liquid straw hydrolysate.

The purpose with the thesis was to create a general model that can help companies to take the best decision when it comes

to improving the quality of an object. The model was created to solve the problem formulation; How to find the best way to

improve the quality of an object, focusing primarily on the relationship between cost and quality but also take other

important aspects into consideration. Before the model was created a literature study was performed in ELIN without any

useable result. After the literature study was performed quality models like Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Total

Quality Management (TQM) were studied. The study of QFD and TQM showed that they are somewhat complicated and

often consider the entire organisation. Simple Quality Model is a smaller model and focuses only at one object at a time.

TQM and QFD have however been good inspiration for the creation of SQM. The model was tested in a real-time situation

at Saab Communication. Together with Saab Communication we decided to apply SQM to the Swedish defence telenetwork

(FTN). In FTN the model was tested at the basic connections. SQM generated 7 different alternatives to improve

the dependability in a basic connection. After the application of SQM it showed that alternative 7 was the best alternative.

Alternative 7 was to decrease the switch over time. The switch over is today not handled by a special employee and is

instead shared among several workers. By employing two new employees there is a possibility to lower the switch over time

with 50% down from today’s 60 minutes to 30. To implement this alternative would bring a cost of 5 374 034 SEK and a

quality increase of 0,1398955% for the basic connections in the Swedish defence tele-network.

This thesis has been made in cooperation with Forsheda Stålverktyg AB which develops and manufactures injection moulds and diecasting tools. The main concern has been their Trading-system which provides them with considerable amount of quality lost function.

Focus has to however be put on the analysis of the Trading-system due to the fact that this has previously meant various quality issues for the company.

This thesis treats quality assurance of the Trading-system, identification of the problems in the process and improvements of these problems.

Quality assurance is carried out when a company detects that their quality based costs become too high. Quality based cost are” the costs that would disappear if a company's products and its different operational processes were absolute” (Sörqvist, 2001 p.30, free translation from Swedish). High quality based costs often result in increased quality problems, which can lead to substantial economic loss for the company.

This work has resulted in a thorough review of the Trading-system whereupon problems have been identified. In order to assure the quality process and lower the quality based costs, we have developed a control system. This, in order to avoid earlier made mistakes and assure that further problems with the system don’t occur.

The developed system will result in more responsibilities for the customers, especially when reviewing the tool drawing and prototype. Thereby the errors and the quality based costs will decrease.

Engaging in M&A is a common corporate strategy and deals are often motivated by synergies, the concept that the value of the combined entities is greater than the sum of their standalone values. However, it is often difficult to capture synergistic value in reality and increasing the probability of a successful acquisition requires a thorough assessment of potential synergistic effects pre-acquisition. In this thesis, we have analyzed the strategic rationale, synergies, and valuation methods used in acquisitions of industrial software companies. Through multiple case studies comprising empirical material from interviews, valuation models and other transaction-related documents, we have studied five bolt-on acquisitions, three of which were completed by subsidiaries of Marrow and the remaining two by an industrial software company under private equity ownership. Main conclusions from the study are: • The foremost strategic rationale and source of synergy is revenue enhancements through acquiring technology and leveraging established sales channels to cross-sell and accelerate market access for the target’s products • A prevalent cost synergy is consolidation and/or renegotiation of contracts with third party software providers whose products are used in industrial software development • Financial synergies are not explicitly estimated nor valued • Valuation is conducted using both the DCF and multiple method with a varying degree of sophistication in the underlying estimations, ranging from a granular bottom-up approach for each line item to a top-down approach based on experience and intuition Lastly, the results indicate that synergies may to a greater extent be a function of the strategic rationale rather than a function of industry. However, acquisitions of industrial software companies seem to be underpinned by the same strategic rationale, namely revenue enhancements through leveraging sales channels and cross-selling. Thus, the corresponding synergies may be comparatively more common in this industry.
Att genomföra förvärv är en vanligt förekommande företagsstrategi och affärer motiveras ofta av synergier, konceptet att värdet på det sammanslagna företaget är större än värdet på summan av de enskilda företagen. Dock är det ofta svårt att realisera värdet av synergierna i praktiken och det krävs därför en grundlig utvärdering av potentiella synergieffekter innan förvärvet för att öka sannolikheten för ett lyckat förvärv. I denna uppsats analyserar vi de strategiska motiven, synergier samt värderingsmetoder som används vid förvärv av företag inom industriell mjukvara. Genom flertal casestudier bestående av empiriskt material från intervjuer, värderingsmodeller och transaktionsrelaterade dokument har vi studerat fem till¨aggsförvärv, tre av vilka genomfördes av dotterbolag till Marrow och de resterande två av ett företag inom industriell mjukvara under ägarskap av private equity. De huvudsakliga slutsatserna från studien är: • Den främsta strategiska rationalen och källa till synergi är intäktsförbättringar genom förvärv av teknologi och utnyttjande av etablerade säljkanaler för att korsförsälja samt accelerera marknadstillgången för det förvärade företagets produkter • En framstående kostnadssynergi är konsolidering och/eller omförhandling av kontrakt med tredjepartsleverantörer vars produkter används för att utveckla industriell mjukvara • Finansiella synergier är varken explicit estimerade eller värderade • Värdering utförs med både DCF och multipelmetod där graden av sofistikering i de underliggande estimaten varierar, från att granulärt estimera varje post till överslagsestimat baserade på erfarenhet och intuition Slutligen, resultaten indikerar att synergier kan i större utsträckning vara en funktion av den strategiska rationalen snarare än en funktion av industri. Even though the management of large projects has been studied for many years, the track record is still poor, especially for those projects developing complex systems. This thesis studies projects such as these and attempts to find clues as to why some succeed while others do not. Among the challenges, is the specific yet basic need to create a shared understanding in a group of hundreds engineering specialists with their own ideas (biases) of how things actually work. Further, complex development projects are likely to change, especially those projects involved with new technologies that should be state of the art when they hit the market after several years of development time. Thus, there is a need for a tool that can be used to adapt to changes. An important part of this thesis is the evaluation of different diagram systems that have been used in different development projects. These diagrams function as a device to create a shared understanding of the project and enable those involved to maneuver the project through changes. The evaluation focuses on what the diagrams can express and how easy it is to understand their content. In terms of expressiveness, one of the three evaluated models: the Anatomy Model, answers the largest number of questions relevant to the total project manager. In terms of ease of use, the evaluation shows that the Anatomy did not only answer more questions relevant to the total project manager, but was also easier to maneuver through compared to the alternative models. The thesis concludes that when working with complex development projects, a model like the anatomy provides the project manager with a simple tool that can be used to maneuver through changes and create a communal understanding. Such a simplified model addresses more questions that are relevant to the project manager and is easier to update than the traditional tools that are suggested in most literature.

The company CrossControl develops display computers for control systems in industrial vehicles which operate in rough environments. Currently, the system can detect and diagnose different faults but CrossControl would also like to predict upcoming failures by using Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM). CBM is a cost effective maintenance strategy where the health condition of the system is monitored and maintenance is only performed after a degradation in performance has been observed. This thesis work aims to investigate the possibilities of implementing CBM on CrossControl's system by studying the theory behind CBM and associated methods and by analysing real data from the system of one of CrossControl's customers. The results presented in this thesis consist of two literature studies and one case study. The first literature study introduces different types of maintenance and gives a detailed explanation of CBM. The second literature study contains a collection of methods used to estimate the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of the system, which is an important step in CBM. The case study considers the twistlocks of Bromma Conquip's spreader system and serves as an example of how CBM can be used in practise and exemplifies some difficulties that can be encountered when implementing CBM. Finally, a discussion of the obtained results and some suggestions for future work and ideas for how CBM can be implemented on CrossControl's system are given.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the result of the intersection between advancements in technology and the demand for more efficient and sustainable industry. Technology has provided a means for a large and heterogeneous collection of networks, devices, developers, owners, users and other stakeholders. From this there is a clear need for highly interoperable and independently developed systems. Interoperability is a communication challenge which affects all layers in a system. Communication protocols such as HTTP, CoAP, XMPP, OPC-UA and MQTT are above the network layer and below a semantic layer. This challenge includes overcoming interaction pattern differences, such as session and session-less protocols or publish/subscribe and request/response protocols. Common interoperability methods look at utilizing, a) middleware, such as in-system adapters and protocol gateways or b) restricting protocols to one or two possibilities. However, these solutions do not fit IIoT well as they are costly to adapt as the protocol landscape evolves, are intrusive to design or increase development costs. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has been identified as having a great potential for integrating independent systems. When applied to industrial contexts, SOA late-binding and service composition offers opportunities for enhancing interoperability. However, SOA-based service contracts still require complete agreement between provider and consumer in order to exchange service. In this thesis an approach toward interoperability is proposed which leverages SOA principles and a multi-protocol translator. The proposed approach is first contextualized with a set of requirements pulled from existing literature and from application domain requirements. The thesis asks the question; how can late-binding and service composition be used to support a multi-protocol network of systems? The result, a new approach of a secure, on-demand and transparent protocol translator, is proposed. Conceptually satisfying the requirements defined, the design is backed up with empirical testing on usability and latency of the solution. The proposed solution differs from middleware in that, it is a participant (alongside the application system), it is on-demand (only used when needed), it is not intrusive (no design time dependencies) and it operates transparently (to application systems). A complete interoperability solution is deemed as future work, which could extend to full security, general encoding and semantic interoperability.

Mitt uppdrag har bestått av att undersöka möjligheterna till att utforma en ny generations gästsäng på uppdrag av Stram AB. Uppdraget kom i första hand att handla om att göra sängen mer attraktiv för kunden samt undersöka möjligheterna till att göra sängen mindre i frakten, eftersom detta skulle kunna innebära en ökad vinst för Stram AB. Den huvudsakliga faktorn till uppdragets uppkomst var att sängen sett likadan ut i 50år och man vill nu undersöka om det är möjligt att förnya den. I det här arbetet ingår förstudier i form av analyser och undersökningar, idégenerering och då framförallt mot dem koncept som kom att vidareutvecklas. Här kommer även diskussioner kring den färdiga produkten finnas. Resultatet av förstudierna I form av analyser och undersökningar kom att resultera i en miljövänligare säng. Sängen kommer både att vara mer miljösmart samt också uttrycka detta för att locka kunden. Resultatet kom också att leda till ett alternativ till liggunderlaget.


My job has consisted of examining the possibilities of designing a new generation of guest beds commissioned by Stram AB. The project was primarily about making the bed more attractive to customers and explore opportunities to make the bed smaller in delivery, as this could result in increased profits for Stram AB. The main factor to the emergence of the project was that the bed has looked the same in 50 years and now we want to examine whether it is possible to renew it. This work included studies in terms of analysis and research, idea generation and particularly to those concepts that came to be developed. There will also be discussions about the finished product available. The results of preliminary studies in terms of analysis and studies that did result in a bed that is better for the environment. The bed will not only be more environmentally smart but also express this in order to attract customers. The result also led to a solution instead of steel feathers.

Gotlands kommun ville skapa ett mer sammanhållet och ordnart intryck av Visbys torghandel, i första hand för Stora torget. Uppdraget gick ut på att formge nya torgstånd som skulle ge ett lugnt och enhetligt intryck. I uppdraget ingick även att se över planlösningen och komma med förslag på lämplig möblering inom det torghandeln. Den sista delen av uppdraget var att se över tillverkningsmöjligheter och hitta lämpliga producenter, gärna med förankring till Gotland. Jag har samarbetat tillsammans med en intressegrupp för att på ett enkelt sätt kunna få feedback under processens gång. Det har varit ett omfattande projekt med många olika intressenter med varierande åsikter, men jag tror mig ha skapat ett torgstånd som uppfyller de flesta önskemål och krav som projektet innefattar.


Gotland Municipality wanted to create a more cohesive and arranged impression of Visby´s market trading, primarily in the town square. The assignment was to design new market stalls which would provide a calm and uniform appearance. The commission also included to review the layout and make suggestions for suitable layouts in the area for the market trading on Market Square. The last part of the mission was to look at manufacturing opportunities and find appropriate producers. I have worked together with an reference group in order to get feedback during the process.This project with many different stakeholders with different opinions, but I believe I have created market stalls that meet most needs and requirements that the project involves.

There are many risk factors involved with a sedentary lifestyle. Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), circulatory problems and contractures are just a selection of problems you can get by too little exercise. For people who are immobilized because of illness, it can be difficult to get enough exercise and movement to avoid similar complications. Because of most medical supplies on the market today are not optimal for use at home, I have chosen to develop a training device for the lower limbs, adapted for use in a bed, both in hospitals and at home. It is important that the devise can be used in any bed, regardless of headboards. The device must be compact and easy to use. The problem was solved by creating a collapsible device with which to train throughout the lower limbs, including handles for stabilizing the torso and straps with wich you can fixate the devise to the bed.


Det finns många riskfaktorer inblandade med en stillasittande livsstil. Djupventrombos (blodpropp), cirkulationsbesvär och kontrakturer är bara ett urval av besvär man kan få av för lite rörelse. För personer som får nedsatt rörelseförmåga på grund av sjukdom kan det vara svårt att få tillräckligt med motion och rörelse för att undvika dessa, och liknande komplikationer. Då de redskap som finns på marknaden idag inte är optimala för hemmabruk har jag valt att utveckla ett träningsredskap för de nedre extremiteterna, anpassat för att användas i en säng, både på sjukhus och hemma. Det är viktigt att redskapet går att använda i alla sängar. Redskapet skall vara kompakt och lätt att använda. Problemet löstes med ett hopfällbart redskap som med vilket man kan träna hela underkroppen, handtag för stabilisering av bålen och spännband förfixering vid sängen.

(Porter, 1990) Porter believed that there are four main determinants which can shape the nation‘s competitiveness. In this paper ―Diamond model‖was practiced to analyze three considerable different telecom markets: India, Singapore and Thailand. The Indian telecom industry is the world's fastest growing industry. Singapore is a miniscule nation with slight population and nature resource scarcity but Singapore has developed its national ICT industry successful ranks in 2nd place out of 138 countries in 2010-2011 . Thailand‘s mobile penetration rate has reached to 100% but its 3G service still could not move forward. The research found that Singapore‘s telecom industry is highly competitive in the global environment. India‘s telecom industry within its nation is more competitive than the other industries . On the contrary, Thailand‘s telecom industry develops not as superior as other industries such as its manufacturing or trading. At the end, predictions for the short time and suggestions of these objective markets have been commented to contribute to telecom business development in Asian region for target audience.

This thesis examines the role of cultural heritage in adaptively reused historic industrial buildings in Portland, Oregon. While it has been argued that adaptive reuse contributes to the ecological and economic initiatives of sustainability, this research explores how adapting historic industrial buildings for modern reuse can also be socially and culturally sustainable for communities. Industrial buildings provide physical evidence of a rich cultural and industrial past and there are opportunities to share this heritage with a building's new users and/or the surrounding community. Case studies include selectively chosen National Register nominated buildings that meet specific criteria, share a common regulatory framework, and provide insightful information regarding the relationship between history and new use. Strengths and challenges of conveying industrial heritage in modern use as well as opportunities for developers of historic properties to highlight and improve upon this process are identified.
