Abstract:
In 1953, architect, planner, and historian Erwin Anton Gutkind published a series of articles collectively titled “How Other Peoples Dwell and Build” in Architectural Design. At a glance, the series seems an anomaly in Gutkind's extensive oeuvre, and it remains little known in the field of vernacular architecture. In “How Other Peoples Dwell and Build”: Erwin Anton Gutkind and the Architecture of the Other, Marcel Vellinga aims to place the series within the broader context of Gutkind's writings. Running through Gutkind's work—and underlined in Vellinga's article—is the thesis that the historical development of human settlements mirrors the degenerating relationships between individuals and their communities, and between human beings and the natural environment. Thus, the Architectural Design series is an integral part of Gutkind's writings on the history of urban development. The series is one of the first architectural publications to focus on vernacular traditions from an international perspective and to emphasize the importance of studying vernacular architecture in its larger cultural and environmental contexts.

Abstract:
The first chapter of Nikolaus Pevsner's The Englishness of English Art is entitled ‘The Geography of Art’. In this he presents a reflection on the validity of geography as a means of interpreting art and architecture and in it he proposes that, ‘there is a whole string of facts from art and literature [that are] tentatively derived from climate’. The instrumental connection of architecture and climate is widely accepted in the literature of socalled ‘architectural science’. But the influence of geography and the specific conditions of climate may be shown to have a more fundamental influence on architecture than simple pragmatism.

Abstract:
The four-channel architecture in teleoperation with force feedback has been studied in various existing literature. However, most of them focused on Lawrence architecture and did not research other cases. This paper proposes two other four-channel architectures: passive four-channel architecture and passive four-channel architecture with operator force. Furthermore, two types of multilateral shared control architecture based on passive four-channel architecture, which exists in space teleoperation, are put forward. One is dual-master multilateral shared control architecture, and the other is dual-slave multilateral shared control architecture. Simulations show that these four architectures can maintain stability in the presence of large time delay.

Abstract:
To provide modeling and simulation functionality as services is strategically leveraged in the defense domain and elsewhere. To describe and understand the context, the ecosystem, wherein such services are used and interoperate with other services and capabilities, one needs tools that capture the simulation services themselves as well as the capability landscape they operate in. By using the NATO Consultation, Command, and Control (C3) Taxonomy to structure architecture design in the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF), cohesive descriptions of modeling and simulation capabilities within larger contexts can be given. We show how a basic seven-step approach may benefit architecture work for modeling and simulation at the overarching, reference, and target architectural levels; in particular for (1) hybrid architectures that embed simulation architectures within a larger service-oriented architecture and (2) for architectural design of simulation scenarios. Central to the approach is the use of the C3 Taxonomy as a repository for overarching architecture building blocks and patterns. We conclude that the promotion of technical functionality as capabilities in their own right helps delineate simulation environment boundaries, helps delineate services within and outside the boundary, and is an enabler for defining the service concepts in cloud-based approaches to modeling and simulation as a service (MSaaS).

Abstract:
The philosopher Petar Bojanić advocates resistance of the architectural discipline to the philosophy of architecture. Using the technique of mise-en-scène, in “Thinking Architecture/Disciplining Architecture” (2015) Bojanić reaffirms that after architecture’s theoretical turn in the second half of the 20th century the architect is undoubtedly capable of theoretically thematizing his/her own work. I argue strongly that this implies, among other things, building a disciplinary language, which must reconcile, or at least balance between, the verbal and non-verbal form of expression. Also, I try to show that it is precisely theory that the architect has needed through history to establish the architectural discipline as liberal and autonomous. In “The Real and the Theoretical” (2013) the philosopher from Belgrade stresses the tensions between reality and theory present in the work of the architect. Theorizing in the field of architecture carries a danger of severe detachment from currently important and pressing social problems. Since there is no discipline without a group and since architecture is defined as the art of community, architectural practice can be understood, as it is in “The Architectural Philosophy” (2013), as a spatial way of transforming society. Under the background of global warming and energy crisis, exploring the new relationship between architecture and climate has always been a hot spot in the construction industry. Thus, a new design pattern “meteorological architecture” guided by a localized meteorological condition is developed. The paper starts with the distinction of the concepts of “meteorology” and “climate” to explains the connotation of “meteorological architecture”. Through the analysis of current theories and practices related to meteorological architecture, a new principle of architectural space division and architectural form generation logic have been summarized. Finally, the enlightening effect of meteorological architecture on other fields is proposed.

Abstract:
High-performance single-threaded processors achieve their performance goal partly by relying, among other architectural techniques, on speculation and large on-chip caches. The hardware to support these techniques is usually a large portion of the overall processor real state area, and therefore it consumes a significant amount of power that sometimes is not optimally used toward doing useful work. In this work, we study the intuitive fact that architectures with hardware support for threads are more power efficient than a more traditional single-threaded superscalar architecture. Toward this goal, we have created a model of the power, performance and area of several parallel architectures. This model shows that a parallel architecture can be designed so that (a) it requires less area and power (to reach the same performance), or (b) it achieves better power efficiency and less area (for the same power budget), or (c) it has higher performance and better power efficiency (for the same area constraint), when compared to a single-threaded superscalar architecture.

Architecture is one proof of the development of human civilization that has changed related to the circumstances at that time. The development of human civilization cannot be separated from the supported development of the culture. In other words, architecture which is born in one place is a cultural manifestation in that place. Along with that, the development of architecture is also filled with influences which come into the specific region or an area and give different color so that it is created a building with an architecture that is different from other places. This influence will not necessarily be present but it is a long process and gives the characters on the place. In this paper, it will be described the existence of architectural influences from the outside come in and give a touch to the developing architecture in the city of Medan. This influence is most obvious in the colonial government era that does a lot of development in various cities in Indonesia. With a qualitative approach then it explores the phenomenon of the architectural development in the city of Medan to see the architectural influences that come into the city of Medan.

Abstract:
The architecture and its outputs are one of the most relevant fields of knowledge with human beings and their daily life, and the fact that the architectural product represents the architectural vision that which is trying to deliver to the society through the architectural images of various projects, which should be perceived by the eye and trying to interpret them, so the research aims to study the vision generated by the recipient, whether the vision of the designer himself when he sees his work as an architect, another designer acting as a critic, or those who are outside of architecture field, and how that vision that the designer wants to deliver can be transformed from single vision to a double vision about the architectural product. The problem of research was the lack of clear knowledge about the role of different intellectual visions of architectural schools in the compatibility and differing visions between the designer and the other designer or the designer and the recipient to produce a double vision in architecture. The research deals with the concept of vision in general in order to extraction a set of concepts that link the vision with the architecture, whether single or double, which can be reflected by the following elements: (the concept intended by the designer – the form and its treatments - the architectural reading). In other words, it starts with the designer vision or concept and depends on what he wants to deliver, and this leads the research to study the sources of ideas and architectural images which reflect the vision of the designer, which depends mainly on architectural schools and their role in the formulation of the designer thought, and then this will be applied to elected architectural projects belonging to different schools to reach that there is a strong duplication of vision between the other designer and the product versus a partial duplication of vision between the designer and the product and between the recipient and the product

Abstract:
Neural Architecture Search (NAS) has recently outperformed hand-crafted networks in various areas. However, most prevalent NAS methods only focus on a pre-defined task. For a previously unseen task, the architecture is either searched from scratch, which is inefficient, or transferred from the one obtained on some other task, which might be sub-optimal. In this paper, we investigate a previously unexplored problem: whether a universal NAS method exists, such that task-aware architectures can be effectively generated? Towards this problem, we propose Meta Neural Architecture Search (M-NAS). To obtain task-specific architectures, M-NAS adopts a task-aware architecture controller for child model generation. Since optimal weights for different tasks and architectures span diversely, we resort to meta-learning, and learn meta-weights that efficiently adapt to a new task on the corresponding architecture with only several gradient descent steps. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of M-NAS against a number of competitive baselines on both toy regression and few shot classification problems.

Abstract:
For decades, information systems have been designed for controlling and managing business processes. In the past, these systems were often monolithic in nature and not made for interacting and communicating with other systems. Today, departments and organizations must collaborate, which requires distributed Web-based systems to support the enactment of flexible business processes. In this paper, four architectures of process management systems are investigated by studying the components and the relationships with the tasks that make up the business processes. These different architectures support automation of non-repetitive, customized processes, and are compared based on dimensions of flexibility. This evaluation showed that the process orchestration architecture scored best, but still has its shortcomings. The results from the comparison are used for developing a research agenda that includes the suggestion to develop reference architecture for connecting individual architectural components.

Abstract:
The pop-up architecture (or landscape architecture) becomes popular nowadays. Some highlights include annual architecture program such as the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion at Hyde Park, London; MPavilion in Melbourne; MoMA PS1 and Heart Sculpture in New York. Many of these pop-up architectural works have been designed by world renowned architects, such as Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Hezorg and de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, Toyo Ito, SANAA, Shigeru Ban, BIG, etc. And many of these designs reflect innovative thinking that changes the professional world of architectural design. But above all, these pop-up architectures were created in responsive manner to the urban community and the community controversially has good response to this type of architecture. In the other words, pop-up architecture is the way the architects touch the heartbeat of the cities, make them livable for all. Ho Chi Minh City has its own types of pop-up landscape architecture, whereas this paper intends to explore in two case studies: Nguyen Hue Floral Boulevard and Nguyen Van Binh Book Street. Nguyen Hue Floral Street is celebrating now its twelfth birthday in the city. Nguyen Van Binh Book Street has just passed its first anniversary in 2017. Both cases live its own story behind the scene about how livable a city could be through place-making by architecture and landscape design. Throughout these cases, we would like to find out how this type of pop-up landscape architecture being realized and become popular in Ho Chi Minh City, and how it is devoted to a livable city for all.

Abstract:
Performance is determined by a system's resources and its workload. Some of the resources are software resources which are an aspect of the software architecture; some of them are even created by the software behaviour. This paper describes software resources and resource architecture, and shows how resource architecture can be determined from software architecture and behaviour. The resource architecture is distinct from views of software architecture which describe software components, but it is related to the so-called "execution view" of architecture. The paper considers how resource architecture emerges during design, the relationship of software and hardware resources, some classes of resource architecture, and what they can tell us about system performance. Other uses of resource architecture are, to analyze deadlocks, to understand special software architectures developed for demanding situations, and to analyze how subsystems fit together when they share resources. Resource architecture can be described using description languages (ADLs) developed for software architecture.

Abstract:
Abstract Functional and architectural diversification of transcription factor families has played a central role in the independent evolution of complex development in plants and animals. Here, we investigate the role of architectural constraints on evolution of B3 DNA binding domains that regulate plant embryogenesis. B3 domains of ABI3, FUS3, LEC2 and VAL1 proteins recognize the same cis-element. Complex architectures of ABI3 and VAL1 integrate cis-element recognition with other signals, whereas LEC2 and FUS3 have reduced architectures conducive to roles as pioneer activators. In yeast and plant in vivo assays, B3 domain functions correlate with architectural complexity of the parent transcription factor rather than phylogenetic relatedness. In a complex architecture, attenuated ABI3-B3 and VAL1-B3 activities enable integration of cis-element recognition with hormone signaling, whereas hyper-active LEC2-B3 and FUS3-B3 over-ride hormonal control. Three clade-specific amino acid substitutions (β4-triad) implicated in interactions with the DNA backbone account for divergence of LEC2-B3 and ABI3-B3. We find a striking correlation between differences in in vitro DNA binding affinity and in vivo activities of B3 domains in plants and yeast. Our results highlight the role of DNA backbone interactions that preserve DNA sequence specificity in adaptation of B3 domains to functional constraints associated with domain architecture.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the color theory and the application of this theory in architectural design. Since the modernist architects and modern era in architecture, the colors of the buildings were not in the focus of their authors. On the contrary, the modern movement has taught us that color, and especially artificial one, is almost a crime to use and in a way, it expresses a lack of a style. Through examining universal color harmony principles in this paper the problem and phenomenon of using colors in contemporary architecture was discussed, which had its roots in the modern movement and evolved through technological advance especially in material technology. The industrial architecture is used as an example, to narrow down the research field, but also for the reasons of extensive and creative use of color in this type of buildings. We have examined several industrial buildings that have been systematized into three categories. All three categories are analyzed for the application of general color harmony principles. Then discussion focuses on refining principles of color usage in architecture that appear in contemporary architecture in order to systematize those principles, particularly important for architectural education and new practitioners of architecture. In conclusion, it is stated that universal color harmony principles are applicable in architecture as well, as in other visual arts.

As a discipline, the exchange of ideas between architecture and other disciplines or subject areas occurs as a rule rather than an exception. In an attempt to re-chart architecture, mapping the exchange may give a more complete picture as a reflection of architecture itself. In doing so, a survey of the use of the word “architecture” was carried out. Scopus.com was used extensively to explore articles using the word in their abstract, keyword, or title. The finding shows that the word “architecture” is extensively used in nearly all subject areas in Scopus stretching the meaning of architecture to its widest as the organization of things. That “Architecture” itself seems to be diminishing leads to more questions particularly regarding Architectural Education 4.0.

Abstract:
The objective of this paper is twofold. In its first part, we survey the state of the art in research on agent architectures. The architecture of an agent describes its modules and capabilities, and how these operate together. We structure the field by investigating three important research threads, i.e. architectures for reactive agents, deliberative agents and interacting agents. Then we describe various hybrid approaches that reconcile these three threads, aiming at a combination of different features like reactivity, deliberation and the ability to interact with other agents. These approaches are contrasted with architectural issues of recent agent-based work, including software agents, softbots, believable agents, as well as commercial agent-based systems. The second part of the paper addresses software engineers and system designers who are interested in applying agent technology to their problem domains. The objective of this part is to assist these readers in deciding which agent architecture to choose for a specific application. We characterise the most important domains to which the different approaches described in the first part have been applied, propose an application-related taxonomy of agents, and give a set of guidelines to select the right agent (architecture) for a given application.

Abstract:
Abstract- Eclectic architecture is a product of globalization in which architectural styles from different places and time intertwine each other. The development of eclectic architecture in Indonesia tends to follow the trend, neglecting the local value. A study towards eclectic architecture is necessary to raise society’s concern towards the identification of foreign and local architectural style. Masjid PUSDAI Bandung is selected as a research object to represent these issues above, in which the architectural style of Spain, Indian, and Javanese mosque intertwined each other. The research’s purpose towards the research object as a representation of eclectic architecture is to define the meaning of eclectic architecture in Masjid PUSDAI as well as to understand the form of eclecticism in Masjid PUSDAI. The eclectic architecture form will be analyzed towards the mixture of Indian, Spain, and Javanese mosque architecture style.Literature study as a theoretical base consist of the main theories such as the theory of eclectic architecture and theory of form and technic, as well as the supporting theories such as the architecture of Spain, Indian, and Javanese mosque. A comparative-qualitative approach is used as research method. This method compares the documentation from building observation with the literature theories for a further analysis.Through this research it can be concluded that the eclectic architecture form of Masjid PUSDAI Bandung is seen through mixture of two to three architecture style among its elements, thus forming a new architecture style. However, the intertwinement of architecture style doesn’t show on several elements. Some of them show an identical form which is used in Indian, Spain, and Javanese mosque. This research is expected to educate readers, architecture students, and experts in academic fileds, about how to execute the eclectic architecture design in public facilities, especially on mosques in Indonesia. Keywords: eclectic, architecture, mosque

Architecture is one of the sectors which belong to the cultural and creative industry. It is characterized by a high level of individual creativity and creativeness. The main subjects in the architectural sector are mostly individuals or legal entities with a very small number of employees. Architecture in general is closely connected to other sectors, like construction building, and the nature of the architectural job positions requires the employees to have a wide variety of skills apart from formal education. The leading professionals in this sector are architects, landscape architects and engineers who often carry out their activities in the form of a free enterprise. As to the remuneration, the sector of architecture is considered above-average.

Abstract:
With the remarkable development of grid technologies, many grid architectures have been proposed which have evolved greatly in recent years. One of the major challenges for grid technologies is to build the scientific and technological base for share, collaboration, large-scale distributed systems. Theories and models of grid architectures are crucial to this attempt as well as to underpinning the foundations for constructing grid systems working effectively. On the basis of a coarse-grain classification of grid applications, we present a novel taxonomy of grid architectures: interaction-intensive architecture and computation-intensive architecture. In this paper, two new grid performance metrics are proposed to measure performance of grid systems. Then, we model grid architectures mathematically via queueing system M/M/1 and M/M/1/K; mean waiting time and total spending time are given. Furthermore, we investigate the performance of two grid architectures and compare them with each other; meanwhile a series of simulations are carried out to demonstrate the analysis results. Finally, we obtain some scientific principles guiding the grid architecture design and optimization.

Abstract:
This article investigates architecture's ‘expanded field’ – its turn towards culture during the 1980s when the profession expanded its interest to the softer practices of architectural culture. It looks in particular at the emerging enterprises of exhibitions, competitions and awards, publications, and symposia and lectures in the ‘long 1980s’, taken as the Academy years of AD magazine from 1977 – 1992.This period of AD is synonymous with architectural Post-Modernism, as Academy published much of Charles Jencks’ work on Post-Modernism, including six of the seven ever-larger editions of The Language of Post-Modern Architecture. However, by analysing the content and context of AD magazine and the wider context of architectural institutions during these years, this article argues that the Post-Modernisation of architecture should be understood not only as a mere style, but equally as the emphasis on a growing architectural culture, discourse, and the ‘ideal’, and the retreat from building and the ‘real’. In other words, this period witnessed the establishment of architectural culture as a new type of practice, and furthermore, AD was instrumental in this cultural turn.

Abstract:
This paper analyses architecture created through appropriating existing materials while focusing on strategies of intertextuality. It argues that the meaning of an architectural object does not derive from itself, or its poetic concepts, but rather from its relationship with other architectural objects, other art works as texts, cultural texts, and everyday practices. My aim is to show various theoretical problems of the theory of architecture and art, which as a network of overlapping texts of culture, surround the architectural production of Alexander Brodsky. Here I use different and varied theoretical concepts, selecting two case studies by Brodsky - The Pavilion for Vodka Ceremonies and Rotunda-upon which the paper is based as an interdiscursive study.

Abstract:
Different individuals have different perception of artworks. This study aims to find the differences between architecture educators and other interpreters in perceiving architecture students’ pre-sketching. For this purpose, the images of architecture students’ pre-sketches were interpreted by three groups. The information perceived from the students’ pre-sketching was coded and categorized as description, analysis, cognition, emotion, artist and evaluation. The results indicate that the focus of architecture educators was on formal aspects, architects tended to notice students’ architectural abilities while interpretations of educators from other disciplines emphasized the perception of meaning and emotion. The results also show the special role of educators’ perception in education through art.

Abstract:
This paper highlights the theoretical and critical implications of the everyday for contemporary Chinese architecture on two levels. On the one hand, against the background that – ever since the formation of the profession of architecture in the early twentieth century – there has been a recurrent preference for high definitions of Chinese architecture either in terms of its outer form or style, or its essential and metaphysical meanings. This paper thus aims to identify a quiet yet compelling awareness of the significance of the everyday to architecture in China over the past 15 years. Beginning with Jiakun Liu's declaration of Here and Now, illustrated by his recently completed project in Chengdu, Xicun Big Yard, this consciousness has been made apparent through architectural practice, research and education. To borrow Roland Barthes’ terminology, it is a ‘degree zero’ agenda that rests on the multiple yet ostensible unobtrusiveness of everyday reality in Chinese cities rather than the hot definition of form and overladen historical and metaphysical meanings. In the context of contemporary Chinese architecture, on the other hand, this agenda can also be seen as a resistance arising in response to the dramatic construction of large-scale urban redevelopments that have, in many cases, resulted in devastating consequences. As a ‘degree zero agenda’, the concern of the everyday not only offers a way to see around architecture's obsessions with buildings as autonomous objects but also calls for bottom-up urban processes in contrast to the top down approach that has prevailed in China. The paper calls for a Chinese architecture that, by transforming the purpose and activity of design, would better fulfil its social and architectural potentials through practical, poetic and critical operations.

Abstract:
The paper concerns the analysis of the building of Cricoteka in terms of theatricality, which is the role of architecture in the performance of city life. It discusses such aspects as the transfer of the idea of theatre onto architectural form, the dialogue with the viewer, the place of the building in the city and the influence of the object on the environment by generating tension between individual elements of composition solids. Theatrical dimension of architecture might be understood as a spectacle, invented and robust physiognomy, but also intriguing visual appeal. Through the versatile architectural costumes the architecture puts on, especially contemporary architecture, which stands out from the other buildings, tends to be incomprehensible to its recipients. Aiding the comprehension of the message, as well as its conscious shaping by the authors, is key to mutual understanding and establishing the dialogue. The detailed analysis of the building’s interior, which is the key aim of a project of Cricoteka, remains out of scope of this work.

Abstract:
The article examines a group of exhibitions that took place in the late seventies and early eighties and are useful for grasping what was at stake regarding the debates on the tensions between modernist and post-modernist architecture. Among the exhibitions that are examined are Europa-America: Architettura urbana, alternative suburbane, curated by Vittorio Gregotti for the Biennale di Venezia in 1976; La Presenza del passato, curated by Paolo Portoghesi for the Biennale di Venezia in 1980; the French version of La presenza del passato—Présence de l’histoire, l’après modernisme—held in the framework of the Festival d’Automne de Paris in 1981; Architectures en France: Modernité/post-modernité, curated by Chantal Béret and held at the Institut Français d’Architecture (18 November 1981–6 February 1982); La modernité, un projet inachevé: 40 architectures, curated by Paul Chemetov and Jean-Claude Garcias for the Festival d’Automne de Paris in 1982; La modernité ou l’esprit du temps, curated by Jean Nouvel, Patrice Goulet, and François Barré and held at the Centre Pompidou in 1982; and Nouveaux plaisirs d’architecture, curated by Jean Dethier for the Centre Pompidou in 1985, among other exhibitions. Analysing certain important texts published in the catalogues of the aforementioned exhibitions, the debates that accompanied the exhibitions and an ensemble of articles in French architectural magazines such as L’Architecture d’aujourd’hui and the Techniques & Architecture, the article aims to present the questions that were at the centre of the debates regarding the opposition or osmosis between the modernist and postmodernist ideals. Some figures, such as Jean Nouvel, were more in favour of the cross-fertilisation between modernity and postmodernity, while others, such as Paul Chemetov, believed that architects should rediscover modernity in order to enhance the civic dimension of architecture. Following Pierre Bourdieu’s approach, the article argues that the tension between the ways in which each of these exhibitions treats the role of the image within architectural design and the role of architecture for the construction of a vision regarding progress is the expression of two divergent positions in social space.
