Abstract:
Vascular tone of glomerular blood vessels is controlled dynamically in response to a number of stimuli of which tubuloglomerular feedback and blood flow (and glomerular filtration rate) autoregulation are the most prominent. Both tubuloglomerular feedback- and myogenic-mediated pre-glomerular vasoconstriction are important in the response to reduced pressure. The renal myogenic mechanism, which has the potential to adjust steady-state tone in response to the oscillating systolic pressure signal, additionally plays an essential role in protecting the kidney from the damaging effects of hypertension.

Abstract:
Pathophysiology is central to neuroscience and psychiatry for a number of reasons. Indeed, nearly every inference to normal function of the nervous system is derived from notions of pathophysiology. Understanding DBS’s mechanisms of action—a therapeutic mechanism, particularly—greatly depends on the prior informing conception of pathophysiology. Several current theories of pathophysiology are critically reviewed such as the GPi Rate, high beta oscillations, excessive bursting and hypersynchronization theories. A novel theory offered that introduces the concept of the basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical system as a network of loosely coupled nonlinear polysynaptic reentrant oscillators.

Abstract:
The study of identifiable neurons, a common feature of invertebrate nervous systems, has made it possible to construct a detailed cell-to-cell connectivity map using electrophysiological methods that can inspire the design of biomimetic systems. This chapter describes how the analysis of the neural circuitry in the lobster stomatogastric ganglion (STG) has provided some general principles underlying oscillatory and rhythmic behavior in all animals. The rhythmic and oscillatory patterns produced by the two STG central pattern generating (CPG) circuits are a result of two cooperative mechanisms, intrinsically bursting pacemaker neurons and synaptic network properties. Also covered are the major neuromodulatory and neural control mechanisms. The chapter discusses how a deep knowledge of the stomatogastric circuitry has led to the development of electronic neurons for biomimetic devices that can be used for experimental and prosthetic applications The chapter concludes with a section on new techniques that may help with unraveling oscillatory circuits in the brain.
