Abstract:
Almost a century after the publication, in 1911, of the first two volumes of his magnum opus (the third and fourth appeared together in 1920) Goddard Henry Orpen’s Ireland under the Normans remains controversial. The way to test this is not to read the polite comments of this generation of his successors but to go to a university library, take all four volumes off the shelf, and expose one’s eyes to the palimpsest of student marginalia added down through the decades. Pencilled emotions ranging from anger and outrage to ridicule and blasphemy litter the pages and tarnish its author’s memory, every bit as much in the reprint (dating, interestingly, from 1968) as in the original edition. When the first two volumes, covering the period 1169-1216, were published, they were warmly greeted in certain quarters, British journals in particular carrying laudatory reviews. But in nationalist Ireland grave offence was taken not merely at some of the author’s apparently callous and hurtful statements, but at his basic thesis, a thesis which Orpen set out clearly in the preface to his first volume: In the course of my study of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries (which has been spread over many years) … I have been led to regard the domination of the English Crown and of its ministers in Ireland, during the thirteenth century, and indeed up to the invasion of Edward Bruce in 1315, as having been much more complete than has been generally recognised, and to think that due credit has not been given to the new rulers for creating the comparative peace and order and the manifest progress and prosperity that Ireland enjoyed, during that period, wherever their rule was effective …. . . it is, I think, manifest that the most prominent effect of the Anglo-Norman occupation was not, as has been represented, an increase of turmoil, but rather the introduction over large parts of Ireland of a measure of peace and prosperity quite unknown before.

Abstract:
Medieval archaeology in Ireland has been described twice in the last 30 years as ‘in its infancy’, by Delaney (1977: 46) andby Barry (1987: 1). Neither was strictly correct. Ireland played a full part in the general English interest in medieval castles and churches around 1900, with Champneys, Orpen and Westropp in particular listing and describing them and relating to their historical and European context. In Ulster the medieval period had occupied a central place in archaeological research and excavation, rcmarkable within Europe and unique within the British Isles, from 1950 (Tope 1966).

Abstract:
This article extends the argument put forward by Orpen (1985), that management researchers should consider the validity of the model used by applied research practitioners. Given the increasing complexity of issues affecting management and shop-floor workers in South Africa, this paper raises several problems of methodology that researchers applying the traditional 'scientific model' of research are likely to face. The authors draw on their personal experiences in conducting 'applied research', to suggest some solutions to the problems they have raised. The article concludes by suggesting that the 'scientific' model should be the foundation of applied research, but the architecture on top needs to be fitted to the messy and untidy complexities of real-world data-gathering.

Abstract:
Summary John Bulwer’s (1606–1656) work was unknown in 17th–18th century France. In 1827, when Joseph-Marie Degérando (1772–1842) became curious about the relation between the methods respectively of Bulwer and John Wallis (1616–1703), the pioneer oral instructor of the deaf in Britain, he had to query Charles Orpen, M. D. (1791–1856) in Dublin because no copy of Bulwer’s Philocophus (1648) could be found in Paris. In fact, Theodore Haak (1605–1690) had sent a copy of this book from London to Père Marin Mersenne (1588–1648) in Paris in July 1648, but none of Mersenne’s circle could read English, and Mersenne died several weeks later. In that context, this paper presents a comparison of Bulwer’s views with those of the Cartesians and Port-Royalists. Wallis claimed he knew of no work on speech for the deaf prior to his own, but he must have known about the Philocophus from the time of its publication, five years before his De Loquela (1653) and nearly 14 years before he began teaching the deaf.

Abstract:
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel type of nanoporous materials that have attracted widespread attention over the past two decades [1]. Cu-based metal-organic frameworks such as Cu3(BTC)2 (also known as HKUST-1) are one of the most famous MOF representatives, which exhibit a huge open porosity and thus a remarkably capacity to store and uptake different gases [2, 3]. Recently, increasing efforts are devoted toward finding synthetic routes that enable downsizing MOF crystals to the nanoscale. Achieving control over the size and shape of nanoMOFs and finding ways to assemble them is essential for their exploitation in integrated devices such as sensors, gas separation membranes or photoelectrodes. In this study we explore the conversion of free-standing arrays Cu nanowires with controlled diameter and length synthesized by electrodeposition in etched ion-track membranes into HKUST-1. In a first process step, free-standing Cu wires are produced by dissolving the ion-track polymer template. In a second step, the wires are converted into HKUST-1 structures by electrochemical oxidation. Applying 2.5 V versus a Cu counter electrode, the Cu nanowires are oxidatively dissolved and the MOF is built up as the as-formed Cu2+ ions bind to the BTC3− ligands in the electrolyte solution. The morphology and crystallinity of the samples at different transformation stages is investigated by scanning electron microscopy (Fig. 1) and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. X-ray diffraction spectra measured at different conversion times reveal the appearance of the characteristic reflections of HKUST-1. These results will be compared with previous studies of the transformation of Cu nanowires to HKUST-1 nanowires inside the polymer membrane [4]. Figure 1: SEM images of cylindrical Cu nanowires (a) before and (b) during the electrochemical conversion process, and (c) of a representative octahedral particle after complete conversion to HKUST-1. Abstract:
Words, things This article explores the concepts of language and discourse as these terms appear in Michel Foucault’s early work, and relates these concepts to contemporary theological discussions of knowledge. Further, it describes how Foucault’s discursive approach to knowledge emerges out of his notion of language – which, in turn, is inspired by authors including Jorge Luis Borges, Georges Bataille and Maurice Blanchot. It illustrates how Foucault’s conception of language approaches a material account that problematizes the notion of words as things, and how this trait is intensified in the transition from the concept of language to the concept of discourse in his work. Finally, the article reflects upon the theological implications of Foucault’s discursive approach to knowledge as it appears in his analysis of Gustave Flaubert. The theological reflection is performed in dialogue with contemporary theology, here represented by John D. Caputo, Daniel Colucciello Barber and Jeffrey Robbins.
