Abstract:
An attentive reading of p. Mac orlan based on the development of obsessionnel themes reveals some features which can not become obvious with a hasty approach. A sharp visual perception, an amazing analysis and foreknowledge, numerous directions taken by a creation the substance of which is made of memories and imagination : these are the main ways laid out by this writer who is as brilliant in songs as in novels, in poems as in essays. In this complex work, the concrete always interferes with metaphysical implications; the omnipresence of mystery breeds the conscience of a substantial unity of reality, binding life to vision and abstraction to perceptible material. So, it is possible to connect this work with a baroque tradition from which it takes the essential matter. By the painting, the poetry and the writing, the relationship is established with the ontological modalities, and thanks to it, the finite and the infinite keep close : it is the meaning of mac orlan's litterary adventure

Abstract:
Pierre Mac Orlan does not arouse the exotic feeling based on distance, despite the diversity of cities and the plurality of geographical names figuring in his works. For him the picturesque resides within the familiar itself characterized by "fantastique social" exoticism depicts the inner adventures of his contemporaries conforming to an irrational unknown that exists in the souls of his characters as well as in the places where the actions take place. It is about an exploration of the world of the 20s and 30s which is at the same time fascinating and threatening, about an imaginary journey taken by means of a poetic writing that serves as an exorcism

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis sets out to study the historical and political context of performance art and the emergence of social movements such as feminism. The theoretical framework of this thesis is drawn from the feminist perspective of difference, as put forward in French Postmodernism by Beatriz Preciado in her ‘Testo Junkie’, as well as by Julia Kristeva and Judith Butler. The hypothesis we aim to demonstate in this research is that Orlan is a paradigm of feminist performance art. We shall make an analysis of her work, through which we will discover that her art is derived from carnal art. This type of art was already present in the art and literature of Francis Bacon and Antonin Artaud especially, and in Orlan's work it is apparent as an aesthetic of sacrifice, as proposed here. That is to say, an aesthetic in which the artist is sacrificed for the sake of a new post-human humanity, a hybrid identity, like that of Odysseus (discussed in Dialectic of Enlightenment by Adorno and Horkheimer) who becomes himself through an inner journey. One of the key ideas of this thesis is that the artist's ego, like the Greek ego, is achieved through sacrifice and this is how we construct the self through art, returning to the idea of sacrifice. We have also studied the politics of minorities, starting with the Postmodern French (Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari, Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, etc.), so as to be able to identify the concepts that are staged in Orlan's work. We thus discover that this kind of performance art invokes a political shift within the body of the artist, arising from the aesthetic, and so creates social change in the order of discourse, as if it were a political art of resistance today. The mythical and the ideological come together in a dialectic game by way of the theatre. Behind one reality, another one is revealed, masked and elusive.

Abstract:
This research, of bibliographical matrix, understands the processes of reconfiguration of the statute of the body by means on the approach of the art with the technology, considering itself a new reflection on the aesthetic of the body deconstruction. For this reflexive proposal, the representations of art are approached contemporary carried through for women identified as position feminists, who explore and analyse the relations of the feminine body transformed into an art object, in which not natural elements are incorporated, such as prosthetics, manipulation of the image for computer softwares, among others media. It is distinguished, in this approach, the artistic trajectory of Orlan, whose workmanships here are analyzed from the understanding of the body as a result of social conflicts and place of questions regarding the speeches on sexuality, sort, subjectivity and identity.

Perfection? - Recreating the Human is an exhibition of recent works of art by Orlan, Patricia Piccinini, Margi Geerlinks and Jake and Dinos Chapman. Each of the artists engages, in various ways, with issues relating to biotechnology and the body. The convergence of technology and the body arouses both utopian desires and dystopian nightmares; many of these desires and fears are prefigured in ancient myth and legend. The artists and artworks are therefore discussed with reference to reoccurring tropes from both ancient myth and science fiction.

Abstract:
Through adventure, literature's topos, par excellence, Robert Louis Stevenson, Marcel Schwob, Pierre Mac Orlan and Blaise Cendrars, demonstrate the urgency, in an age of rationalism and historical positivism, to restore imagination as a cognitive tool in its essential social and political functions in the making of any human community. Apologist of the romance, Stevenson excavates the common ground between novel and romance, as well as history and literature, namely the art of narrative that is the point of view from which to consider the representation of reality. Whereas the novel and history tend to approach reality as content, the romance points to its principle of creation. The shifting of point of view from reality to representation, from content to principle, allows for the emergence of another conception of subjectivity as well as another relation to knowledge. Following Stevenson, French authors, especially in the context of World War One, extend Stevenson's epistemological and ontological questions at stake in his adventurous reflection on imagination beyond the literary debate to society at large

Abstract:
Cancer is an important cause of mortality among the recipients of organ transplantation. Cancer transmitted from the donors has poor outcome and the fear of such transmission results in non-acceptance of certain organs. Study of the recipients in the UK over 10 years identified 15 cases of transmitted cancers. The rate of cancer transmission was 0.05%.The risk of cancer transmission was 9 times higher from donors older than 45 years. A comparison of the organ donor data with the guidelines classifying the donor’s risk showed that a selected cohort of donors, who are classed as high risk of cancer transmission, could safely donate their organs resulting in valuable additional survival for the recipients, with low risk of cancer transmission. These results provide evidence, for modification of donor classification guidelines resulting in increased availability of safe organs for transplantation. The risk of recurrence after transplantation of cancers treated before transplantation was low in selected recipients undergoing transplantation after a 2 year-wait following the diagnosis of cancer. No association was found between the donor-recipient CMV status and the risk of post-transplant cancer. This research estimated the risk of cancer transmission to the organ transplant recipients enabling improved risk assessment in transplantation.

Abstract:
A method for preserving transplant organs for extended periods of time has been developed in the transplant organ preservation cooler. The preservation cooler enhances organ viability by maintaining a temperature controlled organ bath and pumping perfusate through the transplant organ. The emphasis on the transplant organ preservation cooler is to provide a simple and portable system which will be powered by boiled off oxygen from a liquid oxygen source. The design of the preservation cooler pump and temperature control system are presented. Results of tests proving the successful operation of the preservation cooler prototype are also presented.

Abstract:
Humans are not ready for what humanity has created By 2020, chronic diseases will account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide. This is a result of malnutrition in today’s food environment. The food industry takes advantage of predisposed human preferences for sugar, salt, and fat. This creates the necessity for individual willpower and habit control and leads to decision fatigue of healthy food choices in our already busy lives. The critical issue is that we as humans are not biologically ready for what is offered to us today. Situated between nutrition science and human psychology, this project aims to critique the food industry and our interactions with food by reflecting on human weaknesses and habits. A combination of human centered design and critical design allows this project to address this issue through communicating the needs of what might have to happen if our behavior and environment do not change. This project is meant to create a critical reflection around our personal relationship to our own body with the hopes that this may lead to an individual awareness of our own food relationship. How might we enable humans to catch up with the food environment today?

Abstract:
An exploratory-descriptive design was used to explore and describe knowledge and perceptions about the organ donation process of persons who had consented for their relatives organs to be donated. A 19 question mailed survey was administered to 110 people who met study criteria. Descriptive methods were used to analyze the data. Less than half of the respondents had discussed organ donation previously or knew if their relative carried a donor card, they indicated that they understood the concept of brain death and its cause. These families were positive about their decision to donate and perceived altruism as the most positive aspect of the process. The most difficult aspect of the donation process emerged as "reality of death." Nurses are a critical link in the organ donation process. Results of this study are useful for nursing assessment, diagnosis, and formulation of care plans for families in the position to donate organs.

Labuschagne, Debbie. "An analysis of organ transplantation in South Africa with specific reference to organ procurement." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/40613.

Full text
Abstract:
Most South Africans die without their organs being harvested for transplantation. In a country where motor vehicle accidents or violent crime are often the cause of death, presumably leaving most of the organs fit for transplantation, it is astounding that the offer of organs doesn’t meet the demand. The aim of this dissertation is to find a practical solution for the current shortage of transplantable human organs in South Africa. This is achieved by critically discussing current South African legislation regulating organ transplantation, considering alternative organ procurement methods, as well as the impact that bioethics and the Constitution might have on the success of an organ procurement system. This dissertation is concluded with the realisation that although the current organ procurement method needs to be changed to required request, relieving the organ shortage will only be achieved by combining several proposed legislative changes, including, but not limited to, creating a national donor as well as a national waiting list; launching an educational campaign; limiting the role of relatives; and expanding the definition of death for the purpose of organ harvesting. KEY TERMS: organ procurement methods; National Health Act; Constitution; organ shortage; bioethics; autonomy; dignity; required request.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three chapters that focus on topics in fields of experimental economics and health economics. The first chapter, “Do I Care if You Know I Betrayed You?” , examines how concern for others’ disutility from betrayal can affect the decision to repay trust in the trust game. We use a laboratory experiment to compare trustees’ behavior when betrayal is obfuscated to an identical monetary payoffs situation where betrayal is revealed. We find that more trustees choose to defect in our experiment when betrayal is obfuscated than when it is revealed. Our result suggests that concern for betrayal costs influences not only the decision to trust but also the decision to repay trust. The second chapter, “Increasing Organ Donation via Changes in the Default Choice or Allocation Rule”, utilizes a laboratory experiment to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative public policies targeted at increasing the rate of deceased donor organ donation. The experiment includes treatments across different default choices and organ allocation rules inspired by the donor registration systems applied in different countries. Our results indicate that the opt-out with priority rule system generates the largest increase in organ donation relative to an opt-in only program. However, sizeable gains are achievable using either a priority rule or opt-out program separately, with the opt-out rule generating approximately 80% of the benefits achieved under a priority rule program. The third chapter, “Improving the Approach to Organ Donor Registration”, proposes to improve organ donor registry by providing a persuasive message with the registration request. I designed a laboratory experiment to examine the impact of the persuasive message on donation decisions. The results indicate that the persuasive message has a positive impact on donation decisions in the early rounds of the experiment. Subjects were about 21 percent more likely to register as a donor in round 1 of the experiment when they were provided with a persuasive message. This behavioral difference across treatment decreased as subjects played more rounds, since subjects in the control treatment learned the information in the persuasive message through playing the game. We further find this treatment effect is mainly from subjects who are not organ donors in real life, while the treatment effect is very small for those who are self-reported organ donors.

Abstract:
The twentieth century was a time of a lot of advances in medicine, none more so than in the field of transplantation. Thanks to the pioneering work of many different people in a variety of different fields it is now possible to transplant bone marrow and solid organs. Transplantation is a truly multidisciplinary specialty where patient care is shared between physicians and surgeons. As in all medical specialties good nursing care is essential and requires a high degree of specialisation. Pathologists are key in post operative management in order to promptly diagnose problems so that treatment can be commenced with the minimum of delays.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research was to add to the body of knowledge concerning pipe organ literature by locating and describing compositions for pedals alone. The search was made with indexes, abstracts, organ literature bibliographies, Union Catalogues, on-line computer services, correspondence with publishers, and an examination of the general performance literature, method books and etude books. The study included works for organ solo which are primarily for pedals alone. A work with a few manual chords was not excluded, but a work which consistently uses the manuals, even in the most subsidiary role, was not included. The study was concerned with compositions which are intended for public performance. Exercises were omitted.FindingsThe efforts of thirty-three composers have produced thirty-nine compositions or collections of for pedals alone. One of the works makes exclusive use of clusters, three use dodecaphonic techniques, and four are from the Romantic Era. The remainder are compositions divided between twentieth-century moderate styles and twentieth-century conservative styles.Seventeen of the works require a pedal board with thirty-two pedals, eighteen of the works require at least thirty pedals, and three may be played on an instrument with twenty-five pedals. One work which does not use traditional notation could presumedly be played on any instrument.Thirteen works, one of which is in Langlais' collection of etudes, employ pre-existing tunes which are treated to variations or other compositional techniques. The other works use a variety of formal designs including fugue, fantasy, sonatina, rondo, dance forms, passacaglia, free form, and other designs.Alkan has the earliest complete work for pedals alone which is readily available.

Waldmann, Anna. "Desiderius Orban: an Australian romantic." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1987. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26267.

Full text
Abstract:
Desiderius Orban (1884-1986) was born in Hungary. He had been a successful painter and teacher in his country of origin and came to Australia in 1939 as a mature and formed artist. He gained recognition in the Sydney art circles relatively soon after his arrival, had a large number of exhibitions, took part in numerous competitions, became a member of various art groups. Orban published three books and ran an art school from 1941 until his death in October 1986. In an unpublished autobiography written in 1965, Orban commented about his artistic career: I always had doubt of my achievements. From nature I am sceptical towards my ability. I feel that my progress was a slow but a steady one. From the beginning my intellect played more important part than my emotions. On the other hand nearly all of my paintings have a romantic hint. This contradiction puzzled me a lot. I tried to fight against this romanticism without any success. Apparently my subconscious and my conscious mind disagree. In his teaching and writings Orban pursued the idea that a creative mind is a mind free of prejudice. In his paintings however, he was unable to flee from the restrictions of conventionalism until the 1960s Orban's desire to translate his creed into artistic terms was hindered by technical limitations. In Orban, the distinction between aesthetic thought and method of expression had produced a constant struggle that resulted in decades of influential romantic teaching and accomplished rather than distinguished middle-of-the-road painting. The denouement of this struggle was achieved in the latter part of his lit when Orban abandoned his semi-illusionist methods. Orban's threefold career as a painter, writer and teacher, was intertwined and has to be viewed in the context of Hungarian and Australian art and thinking, as well as politics and perceptions.

Walsh, Andrew. "The muting of organ pipes." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1993. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/26735.

Full text
Abstract:
Many musical instruments (such as the stringed or brass sections) are capable of being muted in order to change their harmonic structure or acoustic output. The present investigation is aimed at determining how well wind instruments can be muted by studying ways of muting an organ pipe. Three methods of muting were investigated: 1. The use of thin sheets of perforated plastic applied to the open end of the organ pipe. 2. Application of porous absorbers to the open end of the organ pipe. 3. The construction of a “double organ pipe”. The perforated sheets proved to be the most useful form of mute with reductions in the total SPL of up to 10dB and any required value from 0-10dB obtainable. The open area of the perforated sheets was correlated, to a high degree, with the SPL reduction of each mute. Drops in the fundamental frequency of A f/f < 0.02 were observed as the perforated sheets were applied. The absorptive materials appeared to be less reliable in correlating the muting performance with relevant factors (such as the acoustic impedance or airflow resistance) but useful correlations were obtained with the airflow resistance of the absorptive materials. The double organ pipe demonstrated larger reductions of over 20 dB in the SPL but this value could not be altered as easily as changing a perforated sheet applied to the open end of the organ pipe. The method by which the double organ pipe mutes the single organ pipe was found to be active cancellation of the sound emanating from the open end. Factors that were thought to be of importance in determining a “good” mute were a large reduction in the total SPL, a small change in the fundamental frequency. The change in the relative intensities of the harmonics was briefly investigated as this may be important in determining the timbre of the muted organ pipe.

Abstract:
Throughout the history the organ has become a musical instrument of the Catholic Church temple. It has become a sacred instrument celebrating the God fully reflecting His majesty. During its historic development in the Catholic Liturgy the role of organ kept being restated as well as the expression of its sound. There has always been a lot of place for art in the Catholic Church. The organ as a musical instrument of the temple has become an integrated part of its beauty, nobility and dignity. Changes in the history bring changes into art, church and humanity and sometimes it can be seen that the two inseparable parts of life ? the profane and religious are put in contradiction. Then it is important to vindicate the value and position of the temple in life and so the existence of the liturgical instrument ? the organ. In spite of certain skepticism attacking liturgical congregations and their importance defending voices of popes, organists and believers themselves can still be clearly heard. They speak about a great value we have inherited from famous composers but also about life of our ancestors who have built organs to bring their spirits closer to the God and the truthful life. It is very important to spread this tradition in the present days too.

Abstract:
Objective. To evaluate organ donation (OD) policy, appropriate comparisons between different OD programs are required. The objective of this research was to investigate alternative methods of measuring national rates of OD using publicly available data and examine the implications of using each method as a measure of performance.
Method. We used 7 measures to calculate deceased OD rates, based on 7 different denominators. Data were collected from OD organizations and the World Health Organization. OD rates for each measure were calculated for 10 countries for the years 2001--2004. Relative rates were calculated using Spain as the standard.
Results. We found variations in relative rates across the proposed measures. Regardless of the measure used Spain excelled.
Conclusion. If the purpose of the OD rate is to identify the top performer internationally, it may not matter which measure is used providing this is done with an understanding of its limitations.

Morrison, Emma Elisabeth. "Development of circulatory microRNAs as markers of organ injury and mediators of inter-organ signalling." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31118.

Full text
Abstract:
Plasma contains small, non-protein coding RNA species, microRNAs (miRNAs). Circulating miRNAs originate from tissues throughout the body and circulate in the blood bound to proteins or encapsulated in extracellular vesicles (EVs). The pattern of circulating miRNAs changes in different pathological states, leading to the hypothesis that they could act as biomarkers or mediators of inter-organ signalling. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high morbidity worldwide. Recent work has highlighted a potential role for EV signalling in the delivery of functional exogenous miRNA into kidney cells, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of AKI. The studies described in this thesis investigate the effects of circulating miRNAs on renal proximal tubular (PT) cells. Utilising next generation sequencing technology, circulating miRNA profiles were demonstrated to change significantly following myocardial injury. These findings were translated from humans into a mouse model of myocardial injury. Investigation of EV cell signalling, using flow cytometry and nanoparticle tracking analysis, demonstrated that PT cell EV uptake was not affected by known physiological agonists. By contrast, EV release from PT cells was regulated by purinergic P2Y1 and dopamine D1 receptors. Toxic cisplatin injury of PT cells resulted in increased EV release and reduced EV uptake in a dose-dependent manner. Cisplatin toxicity in PT cells was unaffected by EVs from mice with myocardial injury, but toxicity was reduced by EVs from mice with drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Circulating EVs from mice with DILI transferred the liver specific miRNA, miR-122, into PT cells in both in vivo and in vitro models. The consequence of miR-122 transfer was modulation of downstream target genes including Foxo3 which has been implicated in cell injury by apoptosis. These findings therefore show that circulatory miRNA profiles change in different models of organ injury and suggest miRNAs can be transferred to PT cells in vivo and in vitro. The improved viability of injured PT cells following co-incubation with DILI EVs, and subsequent transcriptomic work, suggests this may be as a consequence of miRNA transfer. In conclusion, circulatory miRNAs may act as mediators of inter-organ signalling and could play a crucial role in the propagation of systemic illness.

The biological processes that sustain a complex organism require the orchestrated dynamics of complex cellular ensembles. Several vital systems - such as the immune system, the digestive system and more - must process internal and external signals to maintain functional homeostasis in response to perturbations at the systems-level. To further understand how groups of cells collectively respond to perturbations, we have applied single-cell RNA-sequencing and complementary techniques to explore cellular behaviors within complex systems at multiple relevant biological scales: from within a single organ, to an organ system, to across several human individuals with differing genetic backgrounds linked by a shared phenotype. More specifically, at the level of the organ, we have explored acute injury responses in the liver. We have identified and described a new compensatory phase of the liver response to injury, in which surviving hepatocytes upregulate their expression of critical liver function genes to maintain overall organ function. Next, we extended our approach from a focus on an acute injury targeting a single organ to exploring chronic damage resulting from a long-term high fat diet across multiple gastrointestinal and immune compartments. Our analysis revealed molecular pathways and changes in stem gene expression which may contribute to obesity-related disease. Finally, we characterized shared features across multiple unique human donors with a common phenotype, elite control of HIV-1. We identified and validated a subset of highly functional dendritic cells, and developed broadly applicable computational approaches to identify reproducible responses across donors and to nominate candidate targets for rationally modulating the system. Overall, our work demonstrates the utility of single-cell RNA-sequencing for uncovering important cellular phenotypes that inform systems-level responses at any biological scale.

Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to examine children’s comprehension of the internal organs of the human body and to see how this understanding varies between ages. Thirteen children in the ages between three to five have been asked questions, through qualitative interviews, about their thoughts regarding the human body.

The understanding varies depending on the children’s age. A five year old have a better knowledge than a three year old. Their spontaneous reflections regarding the inside of our bodies are that we all have food, a heart, muscles and a skeleton inside. The internal organ most children could locate to the correct place was the heart. Most children also knew the function of this organ.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis explores how people experience the process of solid organ transplantation. It includes a systematic literature review of qualitative research regarding coping during the waiting period; a research paper of the experiences of young adult heart transplant recipients; a critical review and an ethics section. The literature review synthesises qualitative research of transplant candidates' experiences of coping using systematic methods. It identifies two overarching themes. The first, 'processing and protecting self and others from the reality of transplant candidacy' involved making sense of waiting and managing emotional reactions. The second 'a new kind of normal' involved accepting limitations of transplant candidacy while maintaining hope and personal control where possible. Implications for supporting transplant candidates including, reducing barriers to communication, and further research are discussed. The research paper explores the experience of the heart transplant process in young adults, as different life stages present different challenges in adjusting to illness, and this has been overlooked in transplant literature. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was conducted with data from nine young adult heart transplant recipients. Three themes of 'keeping illness at a distance', 'working toward normality' and 'living with difference' were identified. These are discussed in relation to previous literature regarding heart transplant recipients' experiences and implications for supporting young adults through the heart transplant process are presented. The critical review presents reflection on aspects of the research process including the influence of dominant discourses regarding organ transplant on the researcher and participants and the impact of the research on the researchers' professional development, both in terms of clinical and research roles.

Moss, SE. "Orlan/Deleuze : coporeal/(in)corporeal." Thesis, 2003. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/20970/1/whole_MossSuzanneElizabeth2003_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
"Orlan I Deleuze" comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The introduction surveys the French performance-artist Orlan, who for the past thirty-five years has worked with the materiality of her own body to create a "body" of contemporary art work which has provoked the art world in a number of ways. In the 1990's Orlan combined elements and recurring themes from her past work to create a "performance for the future" titled The Reincarnation of Saint Or/an. This series provides a recurring focus throughout the dissertation. Commentators have invoked a diversity of discursive frameworks to explicate the multiple elements of Orlan's Reincarnation. However the failure of these critiques to provide a sustained reading remains unsatisfying. The introduction signals that the conceptual schemas of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari will be activated in order to clear the ground of metaphysical concepts so that the affect of Orlan's corporeal practice can be apprehended in a sustained way. Chapter One situates Orlan as a concept-event intervening against the problem of a representational culture that portrays the body as ideal and seamless. Spinoza's formulation "What can a body do?" provides an informing question that enables a way of engaging with Orlan's corporeal strategy. This chapter modulates Orlan's art through a Deleuzean framework and discusses how the event of Orlan's non-face counter-actualises the designation Woman as Face. Chapter Two surveys Deleuze--Guattari's concepts offaciality and the incorporeal transformation effectuated by order-words. The alliance of the market and the socius in sustaining and circulating desired images of the face is also identified. The rules of the assemblage are applied to explicate Orlan's practice and the chapter presents an argument that Orlan enacts a becoming-minor of the face. Chapter Three situates Orlan's multi-medial practice as "cinematic" and approaches Deleuze's concept of the time-image as co-extensive with Orlan's corporeal art, through the revelation of the unthought within thought. The spectatorial responses to the reception and viewing of Orlan's mediatised performances are also surveyed. The conclusion considers the ontological premise of contemporary art. In response to the uncomprehending and negative reactions to Orlan's project three concrete rules are presented for contemporary art.

English Abstract The thesis adopts a comparative approach to investigate the theatrical expressions, bodily performances, and spectatorship of the two French artists, Artaud and Orlan. Apart from their similar concerns, I will also foreground their disparities in methods and culminated consequences. The opening chapter will pursue Derrida’s problematic of the symptoms of classical theatricality, which will be illustrated by Plato’s cave metaphor, Guy Debord’s critique of the spectacle, and Josette Feral’s law of reversibility. Afterwards, I will draw on Samuel Weber’s deconstructive definition to address the seductiveness and virtual risk of Artaud’s and Orlan’s theaters. The second chapter turns to their bodily performance. In the light of Judith Butler’s theory of performativity, I intend to underscore why and how they re-signify the body conditioned by the sexual differentiation and hierarchization of normative discourses, proceeding to offer alternative performances bordering on the human and the non-human. Regarding Butler’s more ambiguous accounts about theatricality, their practices may also provide some new ways of thinking. The third chapter will contextualize Artaud’s and Orlan’s creations in the social conditions of modernity and postmodernity. The growth of visual entertainments engenders niches as well as crises for their artistic productions. Observably, their ideas about spectatorship and their actual audience participation also reflect the changes in visual regimes and functions of arts. Finally, I will use Jacques Ranciere’s “the emancipated spectator” to revisit the problem of spectatorial passivity and to reflect on how his individualist aesthetics can shed new light on Debord’s universal autism. Evolving from artistic intentions in the first two chapters to audience participation in the third, this thesis will examine their theories and practices from different perspectives, with a view to clarifying the investments of different parties in the artistic communication of performances. Abstract:
