Abstract:
Many public health and social issues faced by society today are multifaceted and require joint and collaborative efforts through health promotion partnerships. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is one strategy that consists of engaging community stakeholders from various sectors to pool their expertise and resources in addressing health and social issues holistically. The literature indicates that the effectiveness of partnerships, such as those established within CBPR initiatives, is influenced by collaborative mechanisms that promote the creation of synergy among partners. There is, however, a lack of knowledge with regards to synergy and its key determinants in the context of health promotion partnerships. This qualitative thesis study is conducted as part of The EnRiCH Project, a CBPR initiative conducted in four communities across Canada, which aims at enhancing resilience and preparedness for disasters among high-risk populations. It explores the creation of synergy through the study of dynamics of collaboration shaping the EnRiCH-Québec City partnership and influencing its ability to leverage community resources for emergency preparedness. Emergent themes highlight that optimal collaboration in the EnRiCH-Québec City partnership is about having the “right people, in the right place, at the right time”. These findings provide evidence to inform community stakeholders, researchers and decision-makers on the dynamics of synergy creation and its implications for partnership growth and effectiveness.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
My creative writing full master’s thesis, entitled Townships, Shacks and Suburbs, is a collection of poems that explores the role played by place in shaping identity. Poems in this collection seek to examine the interplay between identity and place, particularly the influence that environmental settings or contexts have in shaping how individuals define who they are. The theme of place is divided into three environmental contexts, namely the township, the rural context and the urban context. The poet navigates between these three environmental contexts, observing how each influences the way people define who they are and also how they identify with that particular environmental context. This definition of self, which forms part of identity, encompasses the day-to-day life, emotions, struggles, memories and a variety of other aspects that are linked to place and are inherent in identity-formation. The observation of how identity is shaped by place includes the poet and extends to people around him. This collection of poems can be viewed as a man’s attempt at finding out who he is, by exploring the history of his life, as well as reflecting on the intricacies of growing up or being exposed to a variety of environmental settings. It can also be viewed as an attempt at learning who people around him are and how their identities are shaped by the place(s) they live in.

Abstract:
When working with a complex AI or robotics system in a specific application, users often need to incorporate their special domain knowledge into the autonomous system. Such needs call for the ability to manage autonomy. However, managing autonomy can be a difficult task because the internal mechanisms and algorithms of the autonomous components may be beyond the users' understanding. We propose an approach where users manage autonomy indirectly by managing information provided to the intelligent system hierarchically at three different temporal scales: strategic, between-episodes, and within-episode. Information management tools at multiple temporal scales allow users to influence the autonomous behaviors of the system without the need for tedious direct/manual control. Information fed to the system can be in the forms of areas of focus, representations of task difficulty, and the amount of autonomy desired. We apply this approach to using an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to support Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR). This dissertation presents autonomous algorithms/components and autonomy management tools/interfaces we designed at different temporal scales, and provides evidence that the approach improves the performance of the human-robot team and the experience of the human partner.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates selected seventeenth century writings from England and New England to explore the varying significances afforded to the Biblical figure of Adam in theories of the polity. It notes the strong impulse in this period of political upheaval to find foundations and patterns for the polity by returning to the original of Adam’s existence in the Garden of Eden as recorded in Genesis and reinterpreted in Christian tradition. An overview of the times and their political and religious order identifies contemporary preoccupations – legitimacy of sovereignty, security of person and property, freedom of religious conscience, direction of history, expansion to new parts of the world and encounters with new people – that coloured interpretations and political applications of Adam. Against this background, the thesis presents contemporary conversations in which interpretations of Adam played a significant part, proposing a categorisation of Adam as state (the pattern and condition of man and polity) and Adam as story (Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration). Under the general heading of Adam as State the conversations include discussions about patriarchalism, natural law and rights, covenant and conscience; under Adam as Story they are concerned with millennial expectation, mystical discourses of the inner man, and the incorporation of the American Indian into a shared narrative that begins in Eden. These themes are developed in detailed studies of selected works by individual authors; Roger Williams, John Eliot, Gerrard Winstanley, John Milton and John Locke. In these works varied approaches are observed as the authors interrogate, expand or contract the story and traditions of Adam in their interpretations of its significance to their times and nation; in particular distinctions are made between theories that use man’s natural state or fallen condition as the foundation of the polity, and those that give eschatological significance to the actions of men, to events and political change. The diversity of methods and theories that result demonstrates the creativity and wide ranging possibility of Adamic political thought at this time.

Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of the concepts and strategies in the original composition, The Harbour of Incense, a cycle of three movements for different groups of instruments. Each movement addresses an aspect of the musical cultures of Hong Kong. The first movement Taan Go for Harp Solo explores the sound world of the folk genre saltwater song; the second movement Jat1 Wun2 Sai3 Ngau4 Naam5 Min6 for Flute and Piano highlights the musicality of Cantonese language; the third movement Daa Zaai for Oboe, Clarinet in B-flat, Bassoon, and Percussion, is inspired by the keyi music used in the Taoist funeral. The paper discusses how to bring together Southeast Asian aesthetics and contemporary Western compositional techniques, as well as how to communicate this unique cultural experience to performers and audiences from other backgrounds. It provides the transcriptions of two saltwater songs and an excerpt of keyi music, and illustrate how they inform the structures, textures, and melodic gestures of the composition. The nine tones of Cantonese language are also explored for generating melodic materials, metric plans, and articulation writing.

Abstract:
Diploma thesis tests the existence of luck premium on U.S. CEOs' compensations. Luck premium means that in case of high principal-agent costs, CEOs are rewarded for random luck and not only for their productivity. Thesis uses financial crisis in 2008 as a breaking event after which attention and control of CEOs' remuneration by owners, public, and media intensified. Using regression with fixed effects on panel data between years 2004 and 2012 thesis proved impact of luck premium before 2008 while the influence was not significant after 2008. Results were not robust for other model specifications, which might be caused by selectivity of the dataset. Thesis then presents overview of theoretical approaches to CEOs' compensation analysis and recommendations for optimal compensation set-up.

ABSTRACT Casino Development and the Right to the City: Conflict and Community Place-Making in Philadelphia John E. Balzarini Temple University, 2013 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Dr. Anne Shlay This dissertation focuses on the right to the city and community conflict over casino development in Philadelphia. Community outrage erupted in 2006 following the selection of two casinos to be built in Philadelphia. Sugarhouse Casino was planned for construction in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood and Foxwoods Casino was planned for South Philadelphia neighboring the Society Hill, Queen Village and Pennsport communities. For a brief time between 2008 and 2009, plans to develop the Foxwoods Casino moved downtown to Philadelphia's Chinatown community. This dissertation explores the framing of community needs, vulnerabilities and conflict over casino development in each of these three communities and how these framing strategies were used as a foundation for expressing community power. I use a variety of data in this dissertation including in-depth content analysis of the local Philadelphia media, sight observations of casinos, anti-casino actions and town hall meetings. The most important data for this research comes from twenty-nine, one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with a variety of people involved with or knowledgeable about casino development in Philadelphia including anti-casino activists and community members, pro-casino community members, local political officials and their aides, and casino advisors and representatives. A number of ideas and themes are explored in this dissertation dealing with casino development, neighborhood power and the different ways in which community members framed casino development. In chapter three I analyze the debate between casino supporters and casino opponents over the outcomes of casino development for urban regions and residents. If, as many casino supporters claim, casinos attract people from outside a region to spend their money, then I argue the casino has succeeded in attracting revenue to the region in a pattern of neoliberal revitalization. If, on the other hand, casino development fails to attract many visitors from outside a region and relies primarily on local consumers, I argue the casino operates as a form of accumulation by dispossession where wealth is diverted from the locality to the casino and the state. I argue that as more casinos are developed in Pennsylvania, and indeed across the country, the likelihood that a casino is reliant on a localized population increases. If casinos fail to attract consumers from outside a region then no new economic stimulation is achieved. Instead, consumer spending is diverted from other local businesses and directed to the casino. This coupled with increases in gambling addiction have the net effect of harming a regional economy. These new problems created by development of convenience casinos will create new social and economic crises that states and municipalities will need to deal with in the future. Chapters four and five analyze the framing of conflict and the right to the city in three Philadelphia communities where casinos were planned for development. Chapter four focuses on the framing of conflict in Fishtown over the development of the Sugarhouse Casino. In Fishtown, gentrification was an important factor explaining the division between long-time residents who largely supported casino construction and many newer residents who opposed the casino. Newer residents framed the casino as a negative addition to the community, one that would increase gambling addiction and crime, deteriorate the neighborhood and compete with local businesses. They framed the casino selection process as undemocratic, transpiring behind closed doors away from public input. Because of this, many newer residents believed the casino was an unjust form of development. On the other hand, long-time residents viewed the casino as a positive addition to the community. These people argued that SugarHouse would provide jobs to Fishtown residents, economic development, as well as direct monetary benefits to the community. Both long-time residents and newer residents framed the casino according to divergent place-based appraisal of needs and community authenticity. Newer residents argued that the casino was a predatory industry that would inhibit the improvements that were occurring in the community. Long-time residents argued that newer residents were not true and authentic members of the Fishtown community and did not have the right to dictate what Fishtown did or did not need. In this way, casino development became the event that exacerbated nascent tensions in the community over gentrification and community change. I argue that the divergent ways members of Fishtown framed their right to the city was based on different place-based histories and place identity, community needs and authenticity. Chapter five examines the framing of the right to the city in South Philadelphia and Chinatown. This chapter focuses on the different place-identities that led to the framing of opposition to the development of the Foxwoods Casino. The Foxwoods Casino was proposed for two communities, along the Delaware River waterfront in South Philadelphia and in Chinatown. Both of these communities rallied around the anti-casino position and fought to prevent the development of Foxwoods. Anti-casino residents in South Philadelphia framed their right to the city against casino development very similarly to newer residents of Fishtown. Residents who benefited from gentrification and lived in either gentrified or gentrifying communities tended toward an anti-casino position. This was the case in South Philadelphia where the casino was framed as a negative addition to the community and residents fought to prevent Foxwoods from being developed. In Chinatown, the anti-casino frames originated from an experience of perceived threat. The threat to Chinatown residents came from continual attempts by powerful actors to displace the community through new development. They argued that casino development was another in a long line of attempts to develop Chinatown out of existence. In addition, members of the Chinatown community argued that many Asian Americans are extremely susceptible to gambling addiction and the attempt to locate the casino in their community was a crass form of cultural exploitation. In both South Philadelphia and Chinatown, anti-casino residents framed their opposition from their place-based appraisals of community vulnerability. But the frames utilized by the two communities exemplified the differences between the two places and the people who lived there. South Philadelphia framed casino development as bad development unfit for the community, while Chinatown argued that a casino would contribute to both displacement and cultural exploitation. In this way the framing of the right to the city took on a desperate tone for anti-casino residents of Chinatown. The right to prevent a casino in Chinatown was about the right of survival for this ethnic enclave. Chapter six examines the role of social capital in the successful development of the SugarHouse Casino in Fishtown. In this chapter I review the work of Richard Florida who suggests that social capital, as exhibited by strong community ties, is a negative feature of many cities and communities. Florida argues that strong social capital perpetuates powerlessness and isolation in such places. As a result these places are unable to contribute to patterns of urban economic development, growth or change. I contest Florida's arguments regarding the inherent disadvantage of places with strong social capital and tight community bonds. Using Fishtown as an example, I argue that the strong community bonds were a powerful resource for long-time residents who supported SugarHouse. These people used their social capital ties with other long-time residents to generate support for the casino, challenge the credibility of anti-casino claims and negotiate with the casino the drafting of a Community Benefits Agreement. I argue that social capital was an important source of power for long-time residents of Fishtown.

Abstract:
Parking, a seemingly mundane topic, have a huge impact on peoples right to the city. This thesis aims to explore the effects of the regulatory space created by parking norms and policies within the urban landscape. Parking is in this thesis identified as an active form, drawing from the work of Keller Easterling. Being controlled and regulated at the municipal level, parking is a question of local politics. This opens up possibilities for reorganizing parking as a tool for planning and place-making. By rewiring the organization of parking, from an individual property into a cooperative infrastructure, parking becomes a platform for generating local communities in the mid-sized Swedish city.

The protection of health in Brazil is configured in the form of fundamental rights, as much as in a subjective character, as in a social one, and constitutes a duty to be fitted by the State, through the implementation of public policies to reduce the risk of diseases and to facilitate access to their services, in a universal and equal way to all whole citizens, as well as the actions of promotion, protection and recovery. There is a single health system, governed by constitutional and legal rules, throught which are laid down the competences of the three bodies of the federation for the performance of the respectives administrative activities. There are linkage and destination of minimum percentage of budgets resources, which, if not accomplished, can produce strict sanctions, v.g, the possibility of federal intervention and the retention and conditioning of resources repassed by the Union to Member States. It´s confirmed the omission and inefficiency of public bodies responsible for the performance of this service of public relevance, as well as, in derivation of the integrality principle is questioned the coverage of the benefits due to the citizens. This situation triggers the so called judicialization. It´s verified an excess of demands aiming the obtantion of varied medicines and treatments. The indiscriminate judicial award causes reflexes on the budget, generating too, impacts on public policies; necessary, so, the investigation under the structural approach. The performance of the Brazilian Public Ministry acting on public interest litigation and the response of the Judiciary Power is due to guarantee this right. One of the possible parameters for the syndicability of the administrative activities for the respective scrutiny in form of collective guardianship, in a way that can be evaluated the planning and execution of activities related to the right to health, under the collective aspect, but considering the individual implications arising from the inefficiency of the administrative performance, together with the defense of the public patrimony regarding the allocation and use of the budget.

Nogueira, Mara. "Who has the right to remain in place? : informality, citizenship and belonging in Belo Horizonte, Brazil." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2017. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3669/.

Abstract:
The thesis looks at three conflicts related to the 2014 World Cup preparation in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. In each of the cases, affected groups – informal workers, informal residents and middle-class citizens – engage with the state to claim rights over space. It examines how the entanglements between social class and legal/institutional developments engendered through “peripheral urbanisation” shape the capacities of those groups to affect formal/informal boundaries and have their demands legitimated. This research draws on the findings from a fieldwork in Belo Horizonte, which lasted eight months in total between 2014 and 2016 and involved archival research, participant observation and semi-structured interviews with relevant actors. Three cases are considered, which include: the Mineirão stadium redevelopment that displaced a group of informal workers while creating a conflict in a middle-class neighbourhood; the demolition of an informal settlement to make way for a transport infrastructure project; the construction of a hotel in a middle-class area against the will of local residents. The thesis presents three key findings. Firstly, the urban space production is affected by citizens’ capacity to engage with the state. While the state-society boundaries are blurry, citizens are unevenly empowered to have their demands validated and avoid displacement, i.e. the loss of place. Secondly, while informal residents have their rights partially recognised thanks to the “insurgent citizenship” struggles of the past, informal workers are not entitled to compensation because of the disassociation of work informality debates from spatial considerations. Finally, middle-class politics matter, as middle-class residents are better equipped to validate their claims and protect their place in the city. The research contributes to recent postcolonial debates on urban space production and informality. I show that both informal working and housing practices are interconnected through the place-making strategies of the urban poor as well as of the urban middle-class, all of which generate important implications for the reproduction of socio-spatial segregation and thinking of the Brazilian urban future.

Abstract:
The proper establishment of Left/Right (L/R) asymmetry is fundamental to normal development in bilaterians. However, the initial mechanisms involved in symmetry breaking and their conservation throughout the course of evolution remain poorly understood. In zebrafish, the L/R organizer region or Kupffer’s vesicle (KV) consists as a fluid filled cavity, whose circular counterclockwise motion is driven by the motion of motile cilia. We have observed the presence of vesicles containing the ESCRT component Chmp1b in the lumen of the KV. Hence, the diminution of their number is associated with laterality defect, suggesting a potential role for those vesicles in L/R asymmetry establishment. We also participate to show that in spite of its overall circular geometry, the KV flow can ensure the directional transport of vesicles in the organ lumen. Secondly, we are also showing that the function of the Myo1D protein, implicated in L/R asymmetry establishment in drosophila, is conserved in zebrafish. The loss of Myo1D leads to an impaired early lateralization. Moreover, Myo1D functionally interact with the protein Vangl2, a component of the PCP pathway, which controls the tilt and positioning of KV cilia. These findings are supportive of a mechanism according to which Myo1D system represents a conserved molecular machinery essential for L/R asymmetry establishment in bilaterians

Abstract:
This thesis offers observation and analysis on the topic of education in Korczak’s work. Childhood is the recurring theme in the works of this renowned doctor, poet and writer. This analysis takes into account the theme of childhood throughout the diversity of the works of this doctor educator. Janusz Korczak is mainly known as the man who refused to abandon his Jewish orphans when they were taken to the death camps of Treblinka. Why this ultimate act ? A look into his life has been necessary in order to study the educator in his whole and to extract the essence of his thought. Understanding the man throughout key moments of his life and some of his irrevocable choices which lead him to think about the children’s condition. His works include children’s books, biographical books but also some more educational. Studying them leads us to understand fully the ideas Korzack had about childhood and the values he defended such as the right for respect. Finally, the aim is to analyse Korzack’s ideas in relation to the new education and to identify its characteristics. Throughout this thesis, the objective is to understand how the theme of childhood in its pedagogic, philosophic and biographic aspects has influenced the theoric and educational choices and commitment of Korczak

Zeidan, Zeina. "Analyse de la place des sukuk en droit français." Thesis, Paris 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA020027.

Full text
Abstract:
The sukuk are deemed to be a sui generis type of securities, because they supposedly represent a right of ownership on the underlying asset in the interest of their holders. This right of ownership is transmitted through the structuring of the sukuk that allows the junction between its constitutive contracts. However, the classic Islamic law defined the term ownership as the right of use of an asset that entitles the owner for its civil fruits. In addition, the AAOIFI standard 17 does not give the owner a right of disposal of the asset ratio that his securities represent. It also stipulates, that the underlying asset remains attached to the sukuk until the end of the operation. This highlights the collateral role fulfilled by the ownership right of the sukuk holders.Pursuant to the sukuk issue contract, all of the sukuk owners have a personal right against the issuer for the payment of the asset income, held and managed by the latter in their interest. Besides that, asset-backed sukuk which underlying asset is held by the issuer grant their holders a right to the asset performance income during the operation, as well as its proceeds at the sukuk maturity if applicable. Therefore, the sukuk have the bonds’ features as they are defined by the French legislative and case law. Consequently, the sukuk can be issued in France under the bonds’ form and regime either on the domestic or international level, if applicable

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis work was to study the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of secondary metabolites released directly into water by some bacteria isolated from torrents or spring water from mid-mountain that can be ingested by aboriginal people. Different models were used or developed for these purposes, either of pharmacological cell-free type, making it possible to visualize the scavenging effects of bacterial extracts tested on reactive oxygen species, or of cellular type in order to study the impact of these extracts on the signal transduction pathways and reactive oxygen species production systems of macrophagic cells placed in single culture or interacting with other cells from the intestinal mucosa. In the latter case, the aim was to develop an original intestinal barrier model that can be dedicated to studying the impact of extracts on intestinal inflammatory processes. A bacterial identification work looking for new species was carried out in this thesis project, which involved mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, the study of 16S ribonucleic acid and that of the genome. The results obtained have given rise to publications

Abstract:
The study is critically analysing the current legal framework in Malawi in so far as the right to equality and non-discrimination in the work place and the right to work for people with physical disabilities (PWPDs) is concerned. The paper will assess whether Malawi’s legal framework effectively protects the right to equality and non-discrimination in the work place for PWPDs in conformity with international standards. Finally, the paper will, in the event that Malawi’s legal framework does not conform to international standards, offer suggestions on how it can be reformed to comply with international standards, especially the Convention on the Rights of People With Disabilities

Abstract:
It is a truth common to all that from their birth onward, on entering this world, men have rights and obligations. The existence of the right to live and the human obligations on one side and the power to possess and transmit one’s possessions on the other side prove the need to establish a legal system. On a judicial level, death is the end of someone’s existence, the cause for the separation between someone and his goods.Since death occurs to all of us, what happens to possessions whose owner is unknown? The notion of heritage encompasses all the goods and personal objects which a deceased one leaves behind or all the goods of a deceased one which are to be inherited. In terms of law, heritage is understood as the definitive transfer of the goods of a deceased to his parents or his kids under the specific conditions of his society. The transfer of goods of someone who has just died is ancient and stretches back to the first human civilizations. From the time of the primitive form of the family to its current shape, and among the different kinds of societies, there has been a legal aspect to the transfer of a deceased one to his kids. The notion of heritage is inherent to man’s nature. But one must not forget that habits and customs vary from society to society. Thus the creeds related to heritage define the rules related to private goods.Inheriting is a natural right. Some may believe that it would be better that the goods of a deceased be integrated into the common property and be kept at the disposal of the Treasury.Nevertheless, after more thorough thinking, this point of view appears to be far from being just, since heritage is completely natural and logical, like the transmitting of some of one’s parents’ physical and moral traits is, according to the natural heritage

Abstract:
Besides their external bilateral symmetry, most of the animals display left-right (LR) asymmetry of their internal organs. The asymmetric shapes and positions of the visceral organs are regulated by LR asymmetry signaling pathways and their disturbance results in severe congenital disorders. LR patterning in vertebrates and in invertebrates is regulated by different cytoskeletal elements: vertebrates employ microtubules and cilia, while in invertebrates, including Drosophila, the actin cytoskeleton has a prominent role. The actin system has long been proposed to play important role in animal LR asymmetry. To date, the proteins that are directly involved in the regulation of actin dynamics in establishing LR asymmetry have not been identified. In Drosophila, dextral anatomical handedness is determined by a single gene, the conserved type 1D myosin (Myo1D), discovered by the Noselli laboratory. myo1D is a unique situs inversus gene and a key LR determinant. Loss of myo1D function leads to a totally inverted LR organ asymmetry in flies (Sinistral). The genetic and developmental basis of sinistral asymmetry is unknown. Studies in zebrafish and Xenopus have shown that the myo1D orthologs control LR asymmetry indicating its evolutionarily conserved function in LR patterning in Drosophila and vertebrates. Further recent work by the Noselli laboratory has discovered that Myo1D is not only necessary for establishing LR asymmetry in Drosophila but also sufficient to generate de novo LR asymmetries at multiscale levels. This de novo asymmetry is assumed to result from a chiral interaction of Myo1D and actin filaments based on noncell-based assays. Defining this mechanism in vivo is critical to understanding the role of actin and its regulators as a reinforcing link between Myo1D and the actin cytoskeleton in animal LR asymmetry. To characterize the role of actin cytoskeleton in LR asymmetric development, I performed an RNA interference-based genetic screen down-regulating the functions of cytoskeletal genes in both Dextral and Sinistral genetic backgrounds. My study identifies the main actin nucleator formin DAAM as an essential component for LR asymmetry determination in Drosophila. Flies lacking DAAM show symmetrical morphogenesis of LR organs indicating the loss of LR asymmetry. Notably, DAAM is required for both dextral and sinistral development in Drosophila. In addition, genetic analysis revealed that dextral development requires the F-actin network constructed by coordinated activities of the formins Diaphanous and DAAM. Moreover, DAAM is also required for de novo formation of LR asymmetry, suggesting that the DAAM nucleated F-actin network acts as an essential structural component required for chirality determination involving Myo1D activity. DAAM overexpression enhances these asymmetries further adding an extra chiral twist, reflecting that a pool of DAAM decorated actin filaments acts as limiting factor for organ looping in LR asymmetry. In this setting, DAAM molecularly interacts with the Drosophila homolog of Profilin, chickadee (chic) and silencing chic mimics the DAAM loss-of-function phenotype. I also uncovered roles for a subset of actin regulators fli, Lg(2)l, Tec29, Dizzy, βPS mys, rhea and Rap1 in LR asymmetry, indicating they functionally act in the same actin regulatory pathway. Altogether, these original findings clearly demonstrated the fundamental role of actin and its regulation by formins in LR asymmetry and provide insight into the molecular basis underlying animal asymmetry

Abstract:

The thesis examines the issue of Paul Ricoeur s original asymmetry. We defend the thesis that the precedence of asymmetry of mutuality before the symmetry of reciprocity safeguard simultaneously both otherness as the irreplaceability of each person, through mutual recognition. Sustaining this thesis implies, on one hand, to show that symmetry should not be disregarded, since this concept is essential for the establishment of ethics, moral and right. On the other hand, it means considering the possibility of suspension of the struggle for recognition through actual experiences of mutual recognition, symbolized by the exchange of gifts between protagonists; and to pass, thereby, from negativity to positivity, in such a way that the contempt and denial do not reduce the recognition to an original unfamiliarity. Finally, it implies to give priority to the person before the norm, i.e., to ensure that the mutuality of the relationship is not dissolved by the impersonal character of the reciprocity logic.

Abstract:
The main purpose of recruiting is to find a job candidate who meets the demands of formal and informal competence at the same time as the candidate should be seen as the right person to the right place. Several job advertisements in the areas of finance and administration has at least two years of work experience as a demand before individuals can be seen as an appropriate job-candidate, hence it becomes a sort of “catch-22” for graduates with no prior work experience. The purpose of this study is to create a better understanding for recruiters’ approach and attitude to hiring individuals who only have a university degree. Our aim is to get an insight into what recruiters’ believe newly examines contributions are to organizations’, how these candidates can increase their chances of reaching an employment and further obtain a deeper understanding of the recruitment process in its various stages. In order to answer our research questions, we used an inductive approach with a qualitative methodology. We conducted semi-structured interviews with recruiters on six different companies to obtain as much depth in our understanding as possible. During our study we have found that recruiter has a positive approach towards hiring graduates without professional experience, however, it differs on the services level. We have created an awareness of that new graduates will contribute with current knowledge and a lot of energy to support business development and modernization. Graduates with no experience can increase their chances in the recruitment process, for example by lowering the threshold for employers in different ways. They should spend time on their applications and sharpen the arguments why he or she is right for the position. We do further refer to our sixth chapel to take note of all conclusions, this because we find difficulties in presenting them briefly.

Abstract:
Joseph Butler's moral thought and the ethical rationalism of Samuel Clarke, and his followers, John Balguy and Richard Price, are frequently distinguished, as a result of: (a) Butler’s empirical method (e.g., Kydd, Sturgeon); (b) Butler's emphasis upon self-love in the 'cool hour passage' (e.g., Prichard, McPherson); (c) Butlerian conscience, where, on a neo-Kantian reading, Butler surpassed the Clarkeans by conveying a sense of Kantian 'reflective endorsement' (e.g., Korsgaard, Darwall). The neo-Kantian criticisms of the Clarkeans in (c) are consistent with (d) Francis Hutcheson's and David Hume's criticisms of the Clarkeans; (e) modern criticisms of rational intuitionism that follow Hutcheson and Hume (e.g., Mackie, Warnock); and (f) the contention that the Clarkeans occupied an uneasy position within 'post-restoration natural law theory' (e.g., Beiser, Finnis). (d)-(e) thus underpin the distinction between Butler and the Clarkeans in (a)-(c), where the Clarkeans, unlike Butler, are criticised for representing moral truth as the passive, and self-evident, perception of potentially uninteresting facts. This study responds to (a)-(f), by arguing that Butlerian and Clarkean conscience possessed more than one referent; so that conscience meant an individual's experience of his own judgement and God’s judgement and the rational moral order. As a result of their shared theory of conscience, Butler and the Clarkeans held the same theory of moral development: moral agents mature as they move from obeying conscience according to only one of conscience's referents, to obeying conscience because to do so is to satisfy each of conscience's referents. In response to (a)-(b), this study demonstrates that the Clarkeans agreed with Butler’s method and 'cool hour': natural considerations of individual judgement and self-interest were necessary aspects of the progress towards moral maturity in both Butler and the Clarkeans. With respect to (c), it is argued that Butler and the Clarkeans shared the same understanding of practical moral reasoning as part of their shared understanding of conscience and moral development. This study places limits upon proto-Kantian readings of Butler, and neo-Kantian criticisms of the Clarkeans, while making it inconsistent to divide Butler and the Clarkeans on the basis of Butlerian conscience. In answer to (c)-(f), Clarkean conscience shows that the Clarkeans were neither complacent nor ‘externalists’. Clarkean conscience highlights how the Clarkeans positioned themselves within the tradition of Ciceronian right reason and Thomistic natural law. Consequently, in both Butler and the Clarkeans, the intuition of moral truth was not the passive perception of an 'independent realm' of normative fact, but the active encounter, in conscience, with reason qua the law of God’s nature, human nature, and the created universe.

Abstract:
Rural communities have, for much of history, been left with inadequate or no water service. This is because the traditional state/private dichotomy of water provision is inadequate for addressing the unique needs of small, isolated communities. Drawing from the Common-Pool Resource literature, co-management arose in recent decades as a solution to address this pandemic of rural water exclusion. In Costa Rica, co-management takes the form of community water associations known as ASADAS. This thesis explores the successes and challenges of ASADAS through the use of three case study communities. Using interviews, surveys, water sampling and national legislation in addition to secondary sources, this thesis seeks to understand the possibilities and limits of employing co-management as a tool for achieving the human right to water in Costa Rica and around the globe.

Abstract:
Despite the importance to and influence of Kant’s work on contemporary moral and political philosophy, little has been written concerning the possible application of Kant’s moral and political principles to the issue of refugee right. Such lack of exploration seems even more surprising in light of recent refugee crises making headlines across the globe. This thesis constructs a Kantian account of refugee right by examining and applying the Kantian principles of the law of hospitality and the original right to a place on Earth, while balancing these rights against the right of nations to self-determination. As such, this thesis starts with a thorough analysis of Kant’s moral and political framework, drawing from both the Doctrine of Right and Perpetual Peace. The law of hospitality and original right to a place on Earth are explicated and drawn upon to construct a concept of refugee right in accordance with Kant’s Principle of Right and wider principles of freedom. Then the scope of the thesis is broadened to examine how such a refugee right could realistically be implemented across the globe at the level of international relations and law. After careful examination of Kant’s views on sovereignty and self-determination, it is found that nations cannot be coerced to follow laws as individuals can. As a result, Kant’s admittedly vaguer concept of moral progress will be found to be an essential factor with regard to the realisation of - a refugee right.

Wu, Qian active 2013. "Jobs-housing balance : the right ratio for the right place." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/22716.

Full text
Abstract:
CAMPO (Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) is undergoing a revision of the regional transportation plan for Central Texas. The key goal of the plan is achieving sustainable development through integrating a multimodal transportation system with dense mixed land use. The CAMPO Plan has incorporated the growth management tool of jobs-housing balance to guide future land use development. To improve jobs-housing proximity and encourage compact growth, the concept of an activity center connected by high capacity transit corridors was employed in the plan, targeting the accommodation of 31 percent of the population and 38 percent of employment in Central Texas by 2035 (CAMPO 2035 Plan 2010). At the time when CAMPO was attempting to define appropriate ratios of jobs-housing balance for the activity centers, critical questions arose: what is a good ratio? Further, how should jobs-housing balance be quantified for guiding land use development? And to what extent could jobs-housing ratio be effectively used as an intervention instrument? This report attempts to provide theoretical and empirical evidence of jobs-housing balance and examine the applicability of jobs-housing balance ratio for different planning purpose in local context. Based on a rich literature review, the report removed the "deceptive simple concept" (Cervero 1991, p. 10) of jobs-housing balance on the surface and gathered insights on jobs-housing balance from existing exemplary studies. Absent a single consensus of a good jobs-housing balance ratio, the goal of this report is to present the possible ways of measuring and defining jobs-housing balance in complex urban development. This report analyzed existing jobs-housing balance of the Austin Region, presenting the truth of commute distance and jobs-housing balance ratio. Local municipalities might consider more factors in terms of the application of jobs-housing balance ratio in local context.

Van, Lier Joshua. "Right place, right height: Habitat connectivity and condition underpin fish community structure across coastal seascapes." Phd thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/201799.

Full text
Abstract:
Community ecology seeks to understand the variety of factors that influence biodiversity. Early work has recognised that local habitat quality is important (e.g., niche theory), but so is spatial context (e.g., Island Biogeography Theory). In my PhD, I build upon these concepts in marine biomes by combining underwater surveys with Geographic Information Systems to explore how habitat quality and spatial context shapes fish community structure and function in a variety of soft-structure coastal habitats. Local-scale aspects of habitat quality, like three-dimensional hard complexity, are recognised as key predictors of fish diversity. However, relatively little is known about the effects of soft-structure habitat complexity on fish diversity. Using a best-subsets modelling approach and data from three temperate mesohabitats, I assessed what aspects of soft structure best predicted differences in reef fish community composition. I found that high levels of canopy cover and height were key predictors in supporting a diverse fish community across mesohabitats. Thus, it is important that habitat quality in soft-structure environments account for variation across three dimensions. In addition to local habitat quality, the spatial context of an area within the wider seascape mosaic can influence patterns of diversity. Using a patch network of tropical macroalgal meadows that varied in size and distance to a coral reef, I assessed the relative importance of local patch quality and spatial context for predicting the diversity and structure of the local fish community. Multivariate analysis showed the relative importance of these variables differed depending on a taxonomic or functional focus of fish diversity. Most importantly, when species identity was explicitly examined, the placement of macroalgal patches within 500m of a coral reef was among the key predictors, along with hard complexity and soft canopy height. Many accounts of local habitat quality as a predictor of diversity are based on observational studies, such as the results I report on above. Therefore, I used an experimental unseasonal reduction of tropical macroalgal canopy height to explore the consequences of unseasonal canopy loss on resident fishes over short-to-long time-scales. Despite these meadows undergoing a similar, seasonal change in canopy structure, experimental sites, relative to nearby reference sites, had significant decreases in fish species richness and density within five days of canopy height reduction which was coupled with a short-term increase in the density of higher-order carnivores. Some of these effects were still evident two years later, despite an overall recovery in canopy structure. Habitat variation across multiple-scales has often shown to influence patterns of diversity, but their effects on ecological processes are less well known. Predators, through regulation of prey populations, may structure ecological communities via top-down effects. Therefore, I explored the behavioural ecology of a common mesopredatory fish (Thalassoma lunare) to understand how local habitat quality and spatial context may influence predation patterns. While T. lunare showed indications of habitat preference in early life history stages, adult fish were habitat generalists who varied their foraging behaviour according to spatial context. Specifically, individuals in isolated patches would forage across significantly smaller distances than those in well-connected patches, and may therefore contribute to differing local predation pressures in different spatial contexts. My work shows that a holistic, multi-scale approach is needed to understand ecological patterns and processes in marine biomes. I discuss how these insights add to our understanding of marine ecology, and can inform management and design of marine reserves by identifying well connected and structurally complex areas of the seascape to facilitate movement between these high quality areas.

Saksida, Lisa Marie. "Being in the right place at the right time : time of day discrimination by pigeons, Columba Livia." Thesis, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1442.

Full text
Abstract:
Pigeons were trained to discriminate between four keys, one of which provided food in the mornings, another which provided food in the afternoons, and two which never provided food. Three experiments were performed to determine if pigeons could track food availability over a 24-hr period. In Experiment 1, food was available at one place (pecking key) in the mornings and at a different place in the afternoons. Although the length of time between sessions was much greater than in previous studies (e.g., Wilkie & Willson, 1992), all subjects appeared to demonstrate time-place associative learning. In order to rule out the possibility of an alternation strategy, in Experiment 2 only morning or only afternoon sessions were given. Subjects maintained well above chance performance, showing that they were not simply alternating between the two rewarded locations. In Experiment 3, the length of time between morning and afternoon sessions was varied. The results indicated an increase in errors as the inter-session interval decreased, which provides further support for a timing as opposed to an alternation mechanism. Experiment 4 was designed to investigate mechanisms underlying the timing behaviour. Lights-on time was shifted back by 6 hr and no decrease in performance was found during the first session following this phase shift. This finding rules out an interval timer and suggests that a circadian type of timing mechanism, with a self-sustaining oscillator, mediates time-place learning over a period of 24 hr. Further support for this notion was found in Experiment 5 in which subjects were tested in constant dim light. In that experiment subjects' continued correct responding provides additional support for a self-sustaining circadian timer.

Recently Taiwan has been filled up with nostalgic fashion, which is like a new social movement or campaign that reaches into diet, clothing, accommodation, and even transportation. With such kind of atmosphere, many restaurants that boast “nostalgia” pop up in every corner of the large cities in Taiwan. The case study of the research, a nostalgic restaurant “New Taiwanese Original”, was founded for this fashion. For customers who come to New Taiwanese Original, they are consuming the memory in history and tasting the flavor of childhood. Customers of a younger generation who were born after 1980s, while dining in nostalgic restaurants, can not only experience the past that belongs to their parents but also feel a sense of freshness differing from modern society despite the fact that they have never undergone the past age. The research tries to probe into the social and cultural phenomenon hidden behind the flourishing of nostalgic restaurants in contemporary cities from a geographic point of view. A well-known nostalgic restaurant New Taiwanese Original in Kaohsiung was chosen, with its owner and customers as main subjects for research. Strategies through which the restaurant owner “produce” and “construct” his “nostalgic place” and the way customers interact and converse with the simulated nostalgic space will then be studied. The followings are the results of the research and conclusion. On the dimension of business owners, the research analyzes the meaning of the restaurant owners’ constructing the “nostalgic place” through the three dimensions: location, locale, and sense of place, proposed by the political geographer Agnew. Regarding location, the restaurant lies in the most prospective area—Agriculture 16, which is not only convenient in transportation but also surrounded by prosperous commercial areas that boast the effect on aggregate consumption. For interior design, the restaurant owner constructed a Kaohsiung street view in around 1960s, emphasizing the nostalgic atmosphere. Concerning locale, New Taiwanese Original serves not only as the pivot of the owner’s social network but as the platform of people’s social relationship regeneration. Furthermore, the owner reveals his sense of place about where he grew up and his memory of the past through the collection of historical antiques, old-fashioned design of his restaurant and a menu of nostalgic foods. As for the dimension of consumers, through the concept of geographies of consumption, this study discovered that the flourishing of nostalgic places in modern cities represents a new way out under consumption competitions. They also provide customers with a haven to temporarily escape from the pressure in cities. Moreover, by observing customers’ consumer practice in the nostalgic restaurant, it is induced in the research that customers’ consumption in the nostalgic restaurant possesses the five values of consumption: social, epistemic, emotional, cultural and arts. Finally, through in person interviews, it is analyzed that customers of different generations have different consumption meanings in the nostalgic restaurant. This study tried to apply the concept of “place” and “nostalgic consumption” in geography to proceed a dialogue between theory and experience. The purpose is to provide a different thread of thought and direction in the category of geography.

To meet the requirement of public welfare the state may compulsorily purchase private land for installations of national defense and communication enterprises and public utility enterprises, but the area of land to be compulsorily purchased shall be limited. Land property rights of the people for causing a serious violation, the J.Y Interpretation No. 425 to explain has to understand that the procedures must be consistent with the principle of necessity. However, China''s land expropriation in the Land Law and other laws and regulations are not consistent with the provisions of the Government to impose uniform procedures developed in 2000 years that The Compulsory Purchase Act, the land expropriation in accordance with standards far. But when the applicant lazy implementation of the plan or, having set up in accordance with the approved plan up, but within a certain time period no longer follow the original plan to continue to use, the original landowners to pay back the original amount of the compensation for its redemption. After the amalgamation of Tainan County, the basic local governance and effects are different because the townships and cities switched from the local autonomous group to administrative area. This study compares the differences between the autonomy and the county-governed-district in the townships and cities from four perspectives of legal system, personnel, budget and the governance network with the methods of participant observation, case study and in-depth interview as well as evaluates the governance effectiveness of each perspective after all the original townships and cities of Tainan County changing into the districts by taking autonomy, accountability of the decentralized authority, concerted effort, efficiency and effectiveness and the satisfaction of demand as indexes. This study shows that comparing with the original governance, though the evaluation resultsof the local governance effectiveness of the county-governed-districts in Tainan County after amalgamation shows both advantages and disadvantages in four perspectives, they still have space for improvement. The research recommendations mainly contain four parts: I. To orientate the sub-county administrative office as soon as possible and review the distribution of power and the division of work to the different bureaus in case of the confusion on rights and liabilities. II. The district mayor should have the right of personnel; the reserve district mayor training should transform to reserve high cadres training, and the job rotation should be enlarged to the communications among the departments. III. The budget should be allocated by the sub-county administrative office based on authority and commitment; a system about the use of feedback funds should be built. IV. To develop a principle to allow the third branches and the private sections to participate into the local governance in favor of the collaboration of public and private governance.

Abstract:
In 1997, Rogner published a paper containing an estimate of the natural gas in place in unconventional reservoirs for 11 world regions. Rogner's work was assessing the unconventional gas resource base, and is now considered to be very conservative. Very little is known publicly about technically recoverable unconventional gas resource potential on a global scale. Driven by a new understanding of the size of gas shale resources in the United States, we estimated original gas in place (OGIP) and technically recoverable resource (TRR) in highly uncertain unconventional gas reservoirs, worldwide. We evaluated global unconventional OGIP by (1) developing theoretical statistic relationships between conventional hydrocarbon and unconventional gas; (2) fitting these relationships to North America publically available data; and (3) applying North American theoretical statistical relationships to evaluate the volume of unconventional gas resource of the world. Estimated global unconventional OGIP ranges from 83,300 (P10) to 184,200 (P90) Tcf. To assess global TRR from unconventional gas reservoirs, we developed a computer program that we call Unconventional Gas Resource Assessment System (UGRAS). In the program, we integrated a Monte Carlo technique with an analytical reservoir simulator to estimate the original volume of gas in place and to predict production performance. We used UGRAS to evaluate the probabilistic distribution of OGIP, TRR and recovery factor (RF) for the most productive unconventional gas formations in the North America. The P50 of recovery factor for shale gas, tight sands gas and coalbed methane is 25%, 79% and 41%, respectively. Finally, we applied our global OGIP assessment and these distributions of recovery factor gained from our analyses of plays/formations in the United States to estimate global technically recoverable unconventional gas resource. Global technically recoverable unconventional gas resource is estimated from 43,000 (P10) to 112,000 (P90) Tcf.

Du, Plooy Anna C. "An approach to music education in the final phase of high school : possibilities suggested by the learning that took place in a student band playing original, popular music." Thesis, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/8872.

Full text
Abstract:
In South Africa, both the paradigm for music education and the music syllabus need to change: music teachers need to correct and compensate for the consequences of the Apartheid system of the past, and they need to meet the challenges of the outcomes based model of Curriculum 2005, which has been accepted by the National Education Department as the plan which will be followed in the future. This dissertation attempts to contribute to the implementation of Curriculum 2005 by making a case study of a successful student band, Amethyst, all of whose members were almost entirely self taught in music. After identifying what the members of Amethyst learned and how they learned it, the work finds ways of applying the findings from the case study to the teaching of music in the Further Education and Training phase of Curriculum 2005. The case study is contextualised by a consideration of the salient characteristics of outcomes-based education as embodied in Curriculum 2005 and by including discussion of similarities between the way learning took place in Amethyst and the informal learning of music that takes place in African and Indian communities within South Africa. These similarities in learning methods are ones that fit well with the perspectives propagated by outcomes-based education. Practical suggestions for the classroom take cognizance of the intercultural ideals of Curriculum 2005, and these suggestions are presented within a framework based on the critical cross-field outcomes and specific outcomes identified in this curriculum. The matters of evaluation and assessment, as well as the content of learning programs are also addressed. This dissertation is based on qualitative research methods, including interviews with the band members, their parents, some students who were well acquainted with the band, and two educationists with specialised knowledge concerning the new OBE system. The case study also includes an exploration of the reasons for the boys choosing to teach themselves even though music was available as a subject in their school , an exploration which confirmed that the current music education system has become outdated.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the emergence of women's equal rights movement in Czech society and its transformation in the curriculum. It centers on the evolution of female movement and women's emancipation from the initial efforts of informal equality, initiated by Bozena Nemcova, to the achievement of formal liberation and equal rights for women in the society in Czechoslovak republic, in 1920, by achieving an active voting rights, in other words by full and equal citizenship. The theoretical part examines sociological terminology and findings, describes secondary literature by various female writers who focus on the women's movement and gender, and describes women's action in 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The thesis discusses men who played a role in the women's civil rights movement, and also places the topic in the European context. It stresses the importance of women's work, particularly female writers, teachers and politicians. In the practical section the thesis centers on placing the topic within the curriculum reform. It highlights places of remembrance which can be valuable for low secondary school pupils, outlines Czech female emancipation in the context of Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education and summarizes information about gender in educational setting. Abstract:
This work explores the interior-exterior relationships as defined by Le Corbusier, questioning the way in which he incorporates the idea of spatial interpenetration - a major postulate of modern architecture -. By studying sketches, photographs, and notes taken during his Voyage d’Orient, as well as certain architectural notions put forward in his emblematic theoretical works from the 1920’s, we will discover in Le Corbusier a thought that goes beyond the architectural object, revealing a special interest towards the place and the horizontal-vertical dialectics. Some architectural devices like the colonnade and the column will be seen through the master’s point of view –when placed at the transition between the inside and the outside-to bear a mediating role between man and his environment, using the right angel as a measuring tool. This research intends to contribute to the understanding of Le Corbusier’s architectural thoughts, in particular with regards to the relation between architecture and landscape as a phenomenal experience.

Abstract:
As a built and inhabited space, the cities support and symbolize life in common, which simultaneously builds them. Threatened by economic and political power, the need and will to perpetuate the right to cities is urgent. In the cities, more and more unequal and polarized, where the greater, but not better, access to information, results in a greater awareness of this right, erupts mechanisms that claim the perpetuation of the right to the city. Through the four indispensable actions to the human being, to communicate, to inhabit, to produce society and to produce sustenance, it is intended to reflect about the city by, and for all, where the common represents the will to remain in the city.
