Full textLouis Lortet is a scientist from Lyon who accumulated knowledge and administrative responsibilities. Between 1873 and 1909, he obtains from the ministry of the State Education several missions in Orient, in particular in Syria and Egypt. The works related to these travels not only testify on his background as a doctor and naturalist, but also concern other disciplines besides, such as archaeology and anthropology. This study suggests tracing Lortet’s itinerary by emphasizing diverse biographic aspects in order to better understand his orientalist work. The first part links Lortet’s vision of East to the "orientalist" movement of this period. The second part focuses on the life of the scientist, and more particularly on his career. The last part presents a descriptive and analytical study of Lortet’s main work in Middle East

Full textPerceiving means to receive an information, to take it into account, to compare this information with the data from our memory, to process it according to our ways of thinking and then to pull from the image thus formed a consequence, that is to say: an act. To approach the perception of Islam by the French elites between 1830 and 1914, we initially, in our first book, made a compilation of presentations that "scholarship" elites - historians, writers, religious, linguists, philologists, artists - made of Islam; of the data they could receive from their memory, since we talked about Islam since Peter the Venerable; and of these ways of thinking that characterized the era by studying the evolution of the meaning of concepts like civilization, race, and political economy. We then, in a second book attempted to understand how and why the thus formed image had resulted in the colonization of Islamic lands by politicians, their advisors, their supporters, officers, industrialists, investors and administrators. Finally, in a third book, we tried to follow to this day the judgements that are made about these orientalist works. It seems to us that the process of an image, deliberately, and from the beginning, truncated by men convinced that early techniques of natural science could be applied to human sciences has led to a misunderstanding of both worlds

Full textThis dissertation explores the image of cultural China in the imaginaries of “the French”. Its academic perspective is constituted by three dimensions: historical, spatial and discursive. The cultural image of China has historically neither been invariable, nor homogeneous in France, its evolution has depended on the change in meta-narratives in each epoch and on certain French cultural factors. The French- imagined China is a cultural Other marked by stereotypes, Chinese “traditions”, which are often reduced to a distant, mythical past. The otherness of Chinese culture satisfies certain French cultural interests corresponding to contemporary society. That Chinese culture has become “cultural capital” represents a new meta-narrative about China. Products of a spectacular society, the French cultural imaginaries concerning China are also spectacular. The contemporary dominant imaginary relating to China in France constitutes a production of a China imagined otherwise

Full textPopular art, art of subversion, on a local and international scale. Since the 1990s, 'popular art' is the name given by contemporary Egyptian and Middle Eastern artists when they refer to 'anti-elitist' artistic practices inspired by popular esthetics and which are taking root in pop art and in daily life in representations. Kitsch is the most emblematic form of it. Entering the realm of art in the early 20th century, it was adopted by many Middle Eastern artists despite being the focus of esthetic and ethical criticism. The aim of the artists was to produce a visual escalation that carried ambivalence and a wavering sense of meaning. The representation of cultural identity was thus given to ostentation, introducing distance and nuance through which the artists could assert their belonging, provide an answer to the orders of the local and international markets, and inject an element of irony. Similarly, many of the subjects diverted a popular esthetic, creating a dramatizing tension through contrast between the apparent frivolity and gravity contained within. It was also a matter of subverting the hierarchy of artistic values — not to assert the relativism thereof, but to rather further disrupt the social order. With the upheaval of the Arab Spring in 2011, revolutionary art, and particularly urban art, exploded, reinforced and amplified the democratic intention of popular art in Egypt, relayed by the Internet to both a local and international audience, resulting in a coexistence of the political and artistic avant-garde. The public dialogue between the graffiti artists and people in the street fueled the libertarian ambition of some, before waning revolutionary enthusiasm and the return to military power in 2014 caused its decline

Full textThe First World War has changed the face of the Middle East. As the geopolitical map is fully modified, new issues emerge (zionism, rise of Arab nationalisms, etc.). France sets up politically in the region as a colonial power through mandates in Lebanon and Syria. In 1952, the Middle East, where the state of Israel and numerous independent countries reunited in the Arab League can be found, no longer offers the same face as before 1914.Along with technical progress and modernity hardware and with the development of mass tourism, these political upheavals directly affect the french literary tradition of the Journey to the East. It experienced its golden age during the XIXst century, with the artworks by Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Nerval, Flaubert and Loti. But it must be observed that French travelers don't stop coming in the region for all that. From Maurice Barrès to Roger Vailland, passing by Paul Morand, Louis Bertrand, Myriam Harry, Roland Dorgelès, Joseph Kessel or Albert Londres, a lot of writers and reporters go to the Middle East and dedicate a book to this experience.Our work was to build a corpus, which means identify and classify a wide range of texts (books and journalistic articles) – some of which are not well known today – in order to analyze them in a process of literary history and according to a postcolonial perspective.The goal was to give an account of a whole production torn apart melancholic retrospection and enthusiastic description of the modern oriental realities. The Romantic “East” is then the subject of an intense debate and the Journey to the East is tinged with controversy colouring. Travel writers try to revive this literary tradition, reinventing its forms and adopting a less eurocentric point of view, contrary to the colonial acme of the thirties.The analysis of these works which were never studied together before allowed us to write a new chapter of the history of french literary orientalism

Full textPhilosophical tales by Montesquieu and Voltaire most often take place in the “Orient. ” The goal of this thesis is to underline and explain the “oriental” aspect of both authors’ short stories. How do Montesquieu and Voltaire use both the Orient’s image and aesthetic? Is it mere decoration—an exotic bit of local color—or are there other functions? How might the idea of the “Orient” emerge as a vehicle of philosophical thought? During European Enlightenment, the “Orient” was a relatively unknown space, thus making it amenable to themes of escape and dreaming—themes that are also inherent to the short story genre. The “Orient” as a magical, distant space, coupled with the short story genre itself guarantees a certain freedom for authors. In the following thesis, I show the articulation between the image of the “Orient” and the short story, and specifically how the “Orientalness” of the short story allows writers to transform traditional short stories into philosophical tales. The “Orient”, thanks to its geographical distance, alleviates the harshness of criticism, but at the same time, the lack of a concrete location is a way for writers to universalize, to generalize principles for all of humankind. Philosophical tales, however, do not mirror France—they evoke it through metaphor. Montesquieu and Voltaire take on vital problems from the period, including despotism, fanaticism, and injustice—these are the exact subjects that both interested authors and emerged as the most paramount of the period. The philosophical tale educates and amuses the reader, influenced public opinion at the time, and perhaps most importantly, continues to amuse and teach us at present

Full textThis thesis, which is a descriptive study, covers several French writers, mainly travelers, who write on different themes about the Eastern Mediterranean - Turkey, Syria, Egypt and the Holy Land - during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In order to have a vision encompassing all aspects of human life in this region during these two centuries, we have selected a sample of 24 authors, representing various areas of knowledge: diplomats, merchants, religious adventurers. The works of these authors provide information on various topics of the eastern Mediterranean: the organization of different nations, religions, social life, and cities, economic, administrative, political and scientific fields. The study of these works allows us to highlight two major elements. On the one hand we discover how French readers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have learned about this geographical area. On the other hand we have a vision of this space through the eyes of contemporary French authors. Three points are discussed in this thesis starting from the analysis of these works: the methods used by the authors in writing their accounts, the conditions in which these works were produced, and finally the content of these last with the study of the various topics covered by these authors. For each of these three points, the focus is on the differences between the authors of the seventeenth and eighteenth century ones, allowing the detection of changes experienced by their writings a century the other in how to deal with the themes of the Eastern Mediterranean

Full textThis research deals with the historic and geopolitical dynamics of Copts inside the national Egyptian contest and the way they are analyzed by European (British - French) and American authors.The aim is to underline the discrepancy between the complex Egyptian reality and the simplistic representation of confessional conflict Christian vs Muslims. This is what comes to light from the media and bibliography on Coptic issue analyzed. The terminology used for Copts (minority, community, diaspora) denotes this tendency: it has not a direct correspondence in Arabic language because Egyptians refuse these labels. Moreover it does not take in consideration geopolitical factors that move Egyptian actors for the control of territory and rivalries among Copts for this control. The concept of Coptic (discriminated) minority among Muslims majority, is functional to justify the minorities’ protection in Middle East by colonialist and imperialist politics of Europe and USA. Violence cases against Copts are an instrument to delegitimize Egyptian government if it does not respect accords: this is what happened with transition government in 2011 and Morsi’s government in 2012. Coptic emigrated militants, with their extremist message, constitute a connection point between this interventionist politic and academic investigation, and they are responsible of the increasing interest for Copts among scholars and journalists

Full textThe aim of our research has been to demonstrate methodically, following a narratological approach, that the effect of unity achieved in Nerval’s narrative work lies in the fixity of its syntactic structure. In this context, the choice of ‘Voyage en Orient’ to support such an argument might seem paradoxical: enshrined as it is in the largely uncodified genre of the Orient travel, it is subject to all manner of shifts. Yet, it is possible to identify a logical unity behind the surface proliferation, proof that the more Nerval conceals himself, the more he reveals himself. Consequently our consideration has been focused on developing this synergic dimension associating unity with disparity according to three complementary modalities. In the first instance: a syntactic dialectic which articulates the fixity of a single narrative phrase to variables of adjustment while ensuring renewal. Secondly: an actantial dialectic linking the unity of a psychodrama of identity to a series of autofictional modulations. Thirdly: the dynamic of a hermeneutical arc in which the fact of a pathological psyche finds, on the one hand, the beginnings of an understanding in the narrative configuration and, on the other hand, a form of sublimatory quest in a singular poetic art, namely literary rhapsody. Ambiguity moreover of an incomplete narrativity: how can one speak of narrative with a fragmentary text rejecting all idea of closure? Indeed is there any wonder that one should be dealing with such incompleteness when the relativist Oriental utopia of the ‘healing of hearts’ finds it hard, in a psychoanalytical light, to hide an illusory attempt to circumvent the universal taboo of incest?

Full textIn the first half of the 19th century, more and more amateur French travelers left for the Orient, a destination which up to then had been that of a handful of visitors like diplomats and archaeologists. The objective of this study is to examine how these French travelers perceived the difference between western and oriental people At first, the natives appeared to them as others. Their customs, very different from the Westerners', revealed how different the Levantine countries really were. However, the demarcation line between the two populations was not as clear as it first appeared. Indeed, the travellers used different criteria like religion, language, ethnic group, etc. , to draw a border of their own between the two cultures. Moreover, the relation between West and East were evolving during this period as the Levantine countries introduced reforms in an attempt to europeanize native life. So the oriental world increasingly resembled the western one and the border line between both populations was blurred

Full textGeorges Clemenceau (1841-1929) had a rich and many-sided relationship to the Far East. His openness with the Other, his favorable representations of Asians, and his admiration for the Japanese and Chinese civilizations explain part of his defense of extra-European peoples against the domination of the West. The anti-colonialism and anti-imperialism of the radical politician were reinforced during the conquest of Tonkin, the Franco-Chinese Wars (1883-85) and the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion (1900-1901). In politics, as in journalism and literature, the universal principles of Clemenceau are enriched by an original Asiatism, an ideology favorable to the Far East. Artisan of the dialogue of cultures, as a private citizen, he was a major collector of Japanese art and an actor of Japonisme. In 1901 he wrote " The Veil of Happiness ", a play whose inspiration is Chinese. His fascination regarding Far Eastern philosophies, particularly Buddhism, can be found in his writings and orientalist tastes. The colonial and foreign policy of both Clemenceau governments (1906-1909 and 1917-1920) is characterized by a defense of French interests in the Far East. The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 restored the territorial integrity of Cambodia but the attempt failed in reforming Indochina. The financial arrangement between France and Japan (1907) provided a policy of rapprochement with Japan, whose modernization Clemenceau admired. During the Great War, he tried unsuccessfully to get military intervention of that country in Europe. He supported Japan, however, against China at the Peace Conference of 1919

Mallarmé has created its poetics with roman alphabetic writing thanks to his perspicacity, obtained in the search for a new verse in front of the paper: he discovered the emergence of the 'blanc' in his epoch's printing and painting - a result of a long evolution of the alphabetic culture toward its ideographic source. Full textAn important literary production emerged and developed in Egypt from the end of the 19th century until the 1960's: Egyptian women educated in French culture (like Out-el-Kouloub or Doria Shafik) chose this language to write the ambitions of the “new woman”, who was abandoning the private and confined space of the harem and investing public space to loudly proclaim cultural and social demands (feminism, nationalism), despite secular reluctance and resistance from conservatives. At the same time, French women such as Jehan d'Ivray or Valentine Saint-Point, settled to live in Egypt, and became witnesses and actors of this cultural renaissance. These authors adopted various literary genres such as the novel and poetry but also the essay or academic writing, publishing in periodicals or founding magazines in order to express themselves. They question the contradiction between so-called women's and men's literary genres, while contributing to the creation of intercultural literature which encompasses both French and Egyptian traditions. At the same time, they propose a reassessment of the representations of women and the East. This women's literature forms a large production which nevertheless remains relatively unknown as it is rarely republished or read today, even though it often received considerable attention from both readers and literary institutions at the time of publication. This thesis builds a corpus, identifying, collecting and classifying the works before analyzing them. It aims at writing a forgotten chapter of literary history while examining the status of women's literature and francophone literature in the critical tradition

Full textJean-Michel Venture de Paradis was born in Marseille in 1739. In 1752 he boarded the Ecole des Enfants de Langue, founded by Colbert, where he is trained as a drogman. Aside from the classical disciplines teached there by the Jesuits, he studies oriental languages and receives a solid training in erudition. Once a drogman, Jean-Michel Venture de Paradis will spend more than 30 years in the Levant and Barbary. His successful career leads him to the Bibliothèque du Roy where he is named Secrétaire Interprète pour les Langues Orientales, the most important post in the profession of drogman. He then studies philology, translates oriental texts and shares his knowledge with many authors, becoming a key personality in the academic circle of Oriental studies. The Expédition d’Egypte will be his last assignment. He accompanies General Bonaparte and dies during the retreat of the French army from Syria.The use of biographical material taken from the life of Jean-Michel Venture de Paradis opens to a broader vision of the creation, and professionnalization, during all of the 18th century, of the position of drogman. It also permits to focus on the evolution of a profession which relies on a variety of competencies : linguistic, diplomatic, and commercial mediation, which transforms itself, splits up, and gives birth, at the end of the century, to professional diplomacy on the one hand, and academic orientalism on the other

Full textThe Emergeace of a New Orientalism, analyses the post-Cold War appearance of a nea-culturalist discourse based upon critics of Islam, particularly Political Islam. The end of the bipolar moment and the convergence of incidental and long-term fact, have led to the substitution of the lslamic Orient in the place of the Soviet East. Islam, in the new discourse, has become epitome of the Other. From American and European perspectives, in contexts of low intensity conflicts and globalisation Islam has become an essential part of identity building processes. Lndividuals and group' have been propagating and upholding, consciou. Ly and not, a narrative of Islam that serves ideological, political or professional agendas. This narrative renews some premises inherited from classical orientalism, combined with a pro-democracy stand and the support of humanitarian interventionism. The New Orientalism synthesizes complex issues rightly or wrongly associated with IsIam though perennial anthropological and religious lenses. It manufactures certainty through the idea that Muslims, and a fortiori Islamic militants, are culturally predictable. The goal of the study is both to identify and understand the motives that inspire groups or individuals to support and propagate this narrative, and to highlight the existence of an influential intellectual trend

Full textThe Orient has, throughout the Middle Ages to our present day, held a unique place among french thinking. Between 1880 and 1939, perception of the orient underwent profond changes. Exotic appeal of an orient of dreams and fantaisies, as defined by romantics, evaporeted with the onset of realism. The pre-conceived notion were replaced by a quest for the "other orient". Between the end of 19th century and World War II, the "exoticism" of the arabic and near eastern world was condamned as a minar genre. Turbulents events which plaqued theses countries did not leave much room for dreams. Loti and Barrès, by the sheer beauty and power of their writting, were the only ones who could revive the theme that had fallen into oblivion. Credit should be given to minar writers who shed light upon the society in their treatment of the "other anf far giving birth to a new definition of exoticism. The oriental society perceived in its duality, was only a miror reflacting an inperished french society. The refusal to recognize the true identity of the Orient betrays its own confusion, in a world characterized by instability and the loss of ancestral values the western world was seeking for security in the Orient, but it's for ever lost there

Full textThe objective of this dissertation is to examine in detail the concept of despotism as presented by the second generation of Nahḍa – Arabic thinkers active from the late 1870s to the early twentieth century - as well as to clarify the historical importance of their intellectual efforts. In addition, the secondary objective is to demonstrate that this generation, while taking into account the notion of freedom as a political norm, also developed a far more universal understanding of the mechanisms of despotism (and the means to resist them) than had hitherto existed.Arab intellectuals of the 19th century began to use the word al-istibdād as an equivalent to "despotism", understanding this concept, in contradistinction to traditional notions of “tyranny”, as an oppressive system that impedes the development of society, and which brings about the eventual ruin of the community. Particularly following the ‘Urabi Revolt (1879-1882), Arabic thinkers began to use the term "despotism" as a slogan in their fight against authoritarian regimes, and extended its use not only from the political field to the social field, notably with regard to the struggle for the liberation of women and the education of the people, but also to the cultural field, including through the writing of novels and plays. In this historical context, the Islamic reformist Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905) made a particularly noteworthy contribution to the development of the concept of despotism, especially through his idea of the "just despot", and his analysis of the systems of oppression. While retaining the Platonic principle that the prosperity of the State depends upon the qualities and virtues of its leader, he simultaneously analyzed the ways in which the power system reproduced itself, transmitting oppression from elites allied with the European powers, via the middle classes, down to the lower classes and the poor. Many other intellectuals also contributed to the development of the concept of despotism. Jamal al-Dīn al-Afghani (1838/9-1897) and Khalīl Ghānim (1846-1903) emphasized the ideological relationship between imperialism and Oriental despotism. Adib Isḥāq (1856-1884), inspired by European Enlightenment thinkers such as Montesquieu and Rousseau, explained that the despotic state does not repress the people in the name of “repression” but creates -by giving the illusion of freedom to the public- a triangular system of fear, jealousy, and mutual suspicion. Moreover, while Shibli Shumayyil (1850-1917), an Arab Darwinist, criticized despotism from the perspective of social evolution, Abdullaah Nadim (1845-1895) questioned, through his fiction, the economic, cultural, and linguistic hegemony of the privileged classes over the masses. Finally, Qāsim Amīn (1863-1908) and ‘Abdul al-Raḥmān Kawakibi (1855-1902) attempted to reconcile their own traditional knowledge with modern science. They highlighted the role of despotic power in hierarchical relationships between men and women, and reexamined Oriental despotism in the context of the monopolization of capital by the colonial powers within the global economic system. In sum, the thinkers of this generation made every possible effort to deepen their analysis of indigenous despotism, to recognize the faults of their own societies, to prioritize the education of the people over the interests of the leader and privileged, to emancipate both the state and society from the yoke of autocratic tradition, and to evolve a common sprit or vision. Thus, these authors did not fall into the trap of emphasizing the specificities of Arab-Muslim societies, and thus defending the inevitability of despotism, but rather persevered in their quest to reconcile their own traditions with universal visions

Full textThis study aims to establish the relationship between the contemporaneousness in Arabic painting and the traditionalism in Islamic art through a synthetic, analytical and methodological vision. My dissertation consists of three parts : the first part discusses the influences of modernism and the European orientalism : negative influences upon popular arts but positive ones upon the birth of the contemporary Arabic painting in its relation to the modern Arabic renaissance in the nineteenth century. The second part probes the Islamic influences in the painting of Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Iraq. In addition, we have examined those Islamic influences within the occidental current - from academicism to abstractionism. In the third part, our methodology starts from the factors of sociopolitical, cultural and artistic ones in order to establish a wholly and objective vision that respects the aesthetical, historical and critical dimensions of work leading us to three categories of Arabic painting : 1. It is completely occidentalized. 2. It is an Arabic orientalist's vision. 3. It is more authentic i. E. It comes from the fusion of both traditional Islamic aesthetic and modern occidental one. Full textLooking more specifically at French Orientalism, colonialism and writings on biological racism in nineteenth century pseudo-scientific discourse, right through to Tahar Ben Jelloun’s exposure and textual riposte to this racism, I hope to trace a genealogy of race awareness and racial discrimination in France and underscore the very gendered nature of racial taxonomies as they are presents in nineteenth century canonical French literature. Very often we find, as Madeleine Dobies argues, that the Orient or Other is feminized and the feminine is orientalised. For instance in Balzac’s novella, La Fille aux yeux d’or (1835) all Parisian women are figured as cloistered odalisque types, describe with the use of anthropological and botanical language which serve to other and orientalize them. Describing women as orientales makes them irredeemably other and provides a titillating gloss to the western female, boosting her sexual credentials. However this othering also reveals the condition of French women who are sexually stimulating as long as they remains indoors. Such literary representations show that the French tradition of orientalism does not always directly represent French colonial subjects or situations. Rather, the allegories about otherness in French orientalism tend to be literary figurations that detour or displace the problems of the colonial encounter; in effect colonialism is often not named or addressed. Biological difference then, particularly in the nineteenth century, serves as a cloaked analogy for racial difference

Firstly, in order to understand the problematic of Said, this study tries to examine the discussions of the Orientalism and their limits whose analyzes are assumed, in this work, to contribute to better understand the discourse of the saint-simoniens. In the second part of this work, it is important to regard the ideas of Saint-Simon as that of social transition and to examine his discourse which is part of a eurocentric perspective on the history of civilizations. Finally, the study tries to analyze the discourse of the Saint-Simonians about the Orient, which consists of various representations inspired by their belief in the progress of the history and in the reconciliation of the Orient and the Occident by their Saint-Simonian doctrine. These representations show the same part of the limits of the expansionist vision of the Orient as the orientalism of the period even though they have their own characteristics that are different from those of the dominant orientalist discourse of the period: eurocentrism, lack of access to the oriental society, legitimacy of the occupancy etc. This work intends to show that discourse of the saint-simoniens on the Orient is related more to themselves than the Orientals considering that the Orient is generally excluded from their discourse on the Orient

Full textChinese Philosophy is little known in France and is not officially recognized by twenty-first century French philosophers. They do not consider Chinese philosophy as a philosophy but regard its contributions as wisdoms, thoughts or spiritualities. My study attempts to understand this fact by identifying the emergence of such representation across several centuries and starts with its reception in France through Jesuit missionaries in the sixteenth century. This thesis argues that French philosophers’ representation of Chinese philosophy is an Orientalist legacy that French philosophers and scholars have built from a distorted, biased and reductionist view of China and its philosophy as formulated by the Jesuits. This problem of the existence of Chinese philosophy can only be understood if it is approached in relation to the eurocentric and Orientalist ideology that characterizes philosophy and addressed through the intellectual coloniality that dominates traditional epistemology by deconstructing it

Full textThis thesis presents Albert de Biberstein Kazimirski (1808–1887) through three prisms: the Polish exiled, the orientalist and the diplomat. The investigation is based on a multitude of sources gathered throughout ten countries in Europe. Kazimirski was a Polish patriot actor of the Uprising of 1830-31. He studied oriental languages in Poland, Germany and France. Dragoman of the French Embassy in Iran in 1839-40, he had a respectable career for thirty-six years of at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a Persian interpreter and an unofficial liaison officer with the Hôtel Lambert. He stood out during the Crimean War and the 1857 Peace Treaty between England and Persia. He was nominated as an officer of the Légion d’honneur and was consulted by the Czartoryski Princes. Author of the most popular French translation of the Koran and of the first Arabic -French dictionary, he has been considered as a prominent Arabist until today. However, he first was a Persian specialist, even if he always failed to obtain a chair at the Collège de France and at the École des langues orientales. The discovery of the life and work of this man is associated with the exploration of certain little-known aspects of the relations between the Eastern and Western parts of the world in the 19th century. Thus, this research offers the first comprehensive study of the Polish linguists of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs worldwide during the 19th century. In addition, a new synthesis of the history and specificities of Polish Orientalism in Europe is presented, allowing Kazimirski to be fully appreciated as a jewel of Franco-Polish Orientalism

Full textThe theme relating to the representation of the question of the "East" and the "West" has so far been essentially studied from texts written by the Westerners themselves, as did, for example, Edward Said in his famous book, Orientalism. Our thesis aims to study this issue from the writings of French-speaking novelists, that is to say authors from the "Orient" itself, more precisely from Algeria. The aim pursued in the present study is notably to know if this literature develops a counter-discourse related to. the orientalist imaginary or does it just reproduce, in one way or another, the same binary representations specific to this whole western knowledge about the East. The question is studied from a corpus comprising works of fiction covering different periods of evolution of this Algerian novel, that is to say that of the inter-war period, that of the war of liberation, and finally that of the postcolonial period. The study also takes into account the colonial literature that has touched on the question of the "East" and the "West".The analysis is based on four axes; the first one is related to the French language itself, insofar as, on the one hand, the French language constitutes the founding element of this literature, and on the other hand because of its influence on the imaginary developed around the subject matter of our study. The second axis refers to a strictly literary approach, since this dimension is also a field within which the problematic of the "East" and the "West" is expressed. The third axis concerns women, a theme that occupies a central place in the representation of the "Orient" in the Western imagination, but which presents also as a major problematic issue in the Algerian French written novel at different periods of its evolution . The last axis concerns the fictionalization of Islam as a marker par excellence of the "Orient" in the Western imagination since the Middle Ages, a marker which tends today to replace the notion of "Orient" herself. The French novel did not fail to put Islam in fiction, especially in the in between the Word Wars’ novel and that of the independence period.Without falling into generalization or denying this literature its innumerable achievements, especially qualitatively or through the rereading of orientalism with which it entertains complex relations, our study leads to the conclusion that the Algerian French written novel, especially because of it deterritorialization , didn’t reach a beyond of “East” and “West” level. It has been undergoing the constraints of the new forms of hegemony peculiar to the post-colonial period exerted by a certain "West" on the "East". Consequently, it could not be constituted into an autonomous literature, expressing the universal, free from the stakes and constraints related to the dominant / dominated equation. The new forms of domination, more subtle, leave clear marks in the relations between France and its former colony in the literary field, sometimes making the Algerian novel a discourse inscribed in the register of the "art of the dominated"

Full textThe first part in three chapters presents a typology of travellers in Algeria (particularly officials, soldiers, scholars and writer-journalists), studies from east to west and from north to south, the preferred geographical circuit that they followed, and describes some of the dominant characteristics of narratology in their stories (temporality, series of articles, illustrations). The second part shows how theses travel narrations and accounts witness in their own manner the gradual formation of colonial Algeria. We discover how they rewrite in their own manner the contradictory accounts of territorial expansion of France: history of colonial cultivators established on the lands of expropriated natives; history of landscape and the Algerian ways of living transformed by the introduction of western techniques and civilization, its contributions, paradoxes and failures; at last, history of search for Roman empire remnants and the praises of Latinism, whose, the French colonizers, nurtured by the ancient bookish tradition, intend to be called the heir and the imitators. The last part inquires on the ethnological aspects of these viaticum stories. The writer puts an emphasis on the complexity and the ambivalence of the travel narration that, applying certain criteria of definition and ethnical hierarchies to the apprehension of the other, that are unknown to him, create oriental myths that have no relation with the society being observed

Full textReal and Metaphorical Journeys in the Works of Théophile Gautier considers the semantics of wealth in the notions of travel in Gautier’s words, from the printing press to the novel, from ballet booklet to fantasy tale, from youthful enthusiasm to wandering in disappointment in Paris. The real or imaginary journey is said to be boundless. This thesis examines this « extravagance » in Théophile Gautier’s writing, with particular reference to his geographical itineraries and his cultural excursions and knowledge. This singularity of this thesis illustrates that a similar dynamic, founded on the notion of paradox, brings Gautier’s writing to life. Daydreaming by the fireplace and journeys to the ends of the worlds, observations of nature and art criticism, all these excursions adhere to the same sinuous movement . Just like the countries he visited, art and science constitute the metaphorical spaces that Gautier thoroughly explores with deliberate detours. The fantasy domain also corresponds to this double requirement, allowing for to-and-fro journeys between the ordinary and the extraordinary. With the uncanny already concealed within the familiar, nature, likewise, adopts a germinating supernatural dimension. This paper demonstrates, through probing the different literary genres explored by the author, that the oxymoronic trends in his narrative does not express a sense of impossibility but rather, a new pathway, that of the reality of dreams. Indeed, logic presides over the erratic aesthetics of the serious worker and the amateur that Gautier is. This dissertation therefore proposes a key to reading the paradoxes generated by Gautier’s zigzagging journeys

It seeks to go beyond the restrictive vision of an endeavour that cannot be considered French colonial action yet is shot through with an ideology of conquest. These theories, however, have contributed to blur the image of the author, often described as the father of racist tendencies. This thesis is not concerned with the essayist, but with the writer, as a knowledgeable of the East, humanist, curious of the other, and especially unknown.Beyond these racial theories, Gobineau is the author of a literary work which, under the appearance of a hieratic classicism, sometimes gives us a vision of a highly complex man. It is one of the last representatives of the analysis literature, which is peculiar to French. Full textThis study presents an analysis of the representations of the Far East in the works of the Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós (1845-1900). Through a comprehensive study of works produced by the Portuguese author at different moments of his career, we intend to demonstrate that the Queirosian Far East establishes a complex representation of East-West relations that is not restricted to the crystallized images found in the Portuguese literature, which highlight exoticism and an imaginary character. As our main theoretical framework, we use Orientalist theories, especially those of Raymond Schwab (1950) and Edward Said (1978), and critical texts on Eças works. We perform a comparative analysis of fictional and non-fictional texts of the writer, which includes the novels O Mistério da Estrada de Sintra (1870), jointly written with Ramalho Ortigão, O Mandarim (1880) and A Correspondência de Fradique Mendes (1900); the journalistic texts A Marinha e a Colônia (1871), A Pitoresca História da Revolta da Índia (1871), A França e o Sião (1893), Chineses e Japoneses (1894), A Propósito da Doutrina Monroe e do Nativismo (1896), França e Sião (1897); and the consular report A Emigração como Força Civilizadora (1979).

Full textIn the nineteenth century, political contacts between the United Kingdom and the Near East became closer, while tourism developed. At the same time, a greater number of orientalist texts and cultural artefacts were produced. This study examines the illustrations of travel books on Egypt published from 1798 to 1914 and aims to reconstruct part of the British geographical imagination concerning this country. We first provide the cultural and material context of the production and reception of these illustrations in order to understand how the British of the nineteenth century travelled in Egypt and how these trips were then transposed into a specific type of book, which included two different media - pictures and text. We then analyse the iconography of illustrated travel books, emphasising the recurrence of certain motifs and themes throughout the period under study. More than iconographic subjects, the various "modes of imaging" show that the perception of Egypt was plural and changing. Two modes of representation, rather than one, prevail in the production of illustrated travel books up to the 1880s: scientific and picturesque illustrations correspond to different outlooks on Egypt, as well as to varied uses of pictures and books. The opposition between these two modes of imaging is not as relevant after the 1880s: the end of the period is characterised by a number of departures from earlier pictures, which makes it impossible to apply a homogeneous System of analysis upon British representations of Egypt in the nineteenth century

Full textThe present work analyses meanings produced by journalistic narratives of the four main weekly information magazines in Brazil – Veja, Época, IstoÉ e Carta Capital – related to East, Islam, Arabs and muslims. It investigates the form in which magazine news is crossed by pre-existent sayings, external to the text, on the subject of the so-called East. Taking Discourse Analysis of French extraction (AD) as analytic tool, it researches if and how the weekly information magazines product and puts in circulation an orientalist outlook on events and characters, taking the notion developed by Edward Said (1990) to define the discourse that articulate knowledges related to East which are produced and organized in the West by various instances of power (colonial and imperial, cultural, political, symbolic).
El presente trabajo analisa los sentidos producidos por la narrativa periodistica de las cuatro más grandes revistas semanales de información brasileñas –Veja, Época, IstoÉ e Carta Capital – sobre Oriente, Islan, árabes y musulmanes. Investiga la forma como el periodismo de revista es cruzado por decires preexistentes, exteriores al texto, sobre el llamado Oriente. Tomando la Análisis de Discurso de extracción francesa (AD) como dispositivo analítico, estudia si y de que forma las revistas semanales de información producen y ponen em circulación una mirada orientalista sobre eventos y personajes, conforme noción desarrollada por Edward Said (1990) para designar el discurso que articula saberes referentes al Oriente producidos y organizados en el Ocidente por distintas instancias de poder (colonial y imperial, cultural, político, simbolico).
