Full textThe thesis deals with the analysis of the role and functions performed by the Transport Regulatory Authority, in light of the liberalization process that has affected the transport sector. First of all, are examined the structural and organizational aspects of the Authority, with particular reference to the functions, powers, and areas of intervention. Furthermore, the subject of the investigation is the regulatory regulation applicable to the Authority. After that, the analysis focuses on the constitutional framework in which the Authority is set up, in particular emphasizing the points of contact between the functions attributed to the Authority and those attributed to the territorial autonomies, to the other independent administrative authorities, and, last but not least, to other institutions operating in the transport sector. Are highlighted the interferences with political power, in consideration of the influence of the Authority's actions with respect to the government policy. The Authority's choices regarding relations with foreign administrations, and with international organizations are also the subject of further study. Finally, the thesis analyzes some of the most significant actions implemented by the Transport Regulatory Authority in the transport sectors, in order to verify concretely the role played by the Authority and ascertain the real impact of transport regulation on the various markets. In particular, is examined the regulatory activity carried out by the Authority in the railway sector, the road sector, the aviation sector, local public transport and maritime transport.

Full textOnce illustrated how the regulation of directors’ “organizational duties” have changed in Italian company law, this Phd thesis examines the new article 2086.2 of the Civil Code, under the assumption that it codifies the principle of good governance of enterprises. The study especially analyses how this principle affects the equity-holders’ decision-making process in the Italian limited liability company (“società a responsabilità limitata”), assuming that they are obliged to take their decisions on the basis of adequate information when they run the company (and to take immediate actions when the company is in difficulty). Hence, the purpose of this research is to check whether the violation of those standards by equityholders may lead to invalidate their decisions and to bring damage actions against them, especially when their conduct depends on the breach of the aforesaid “organizational duties” by directors.

Full textThe focus of this thesis is to analyze the correlations between the competitive advantage, associated to the improvement of the process of decision making, and the content management through the Enterprise Content Management platform (ECM). One scope of this work is to increase the Knowledge Management (KM) literature and in particular to seek the correlation between the ECM Systems and the Decision Support Systems. Enterprise Content Management platforms largely have been analyzed according to Transaction Cost Theory (Reimer, 2002; McKeever, 2003; Smith and McKeen, 2003; O'Callaghan and Smits, 2005; Tyrväinen et al., 2006) and generally are described as useful for the reduction of ECM costs inside an organization (McKeever, 2003). Through empirical analyses, various authors have stressed that ECM tools increase efficiency and reduce management and research costs. Few studies consider the impacts of these tools on the organization or company processes. In particular, no research has highlighted the strategic role of ECM platforms in Enterprise Content Management (Gupta et al., 2002; Helfat and Peteraf, 2003; Smith and McKeen, 2003; O'Callaghan and Smits, 2005) as a means to improve and speed up the decision-making process. The case study will be analyzed by the Knowledge Based View. Specifically, the knowledge-based view (KBV) constitutes a fundamental essence of the resource-based view (RBV; Conner and Prahalad, 1996), reflecting the importance of knowledge assets. The knowledge and enterprise content generated thus can be interpreted not only as strategic resources to achieve or maintain a competitive advantage but also as useful tools for developing and expanding the company’s ability to respond promptly to unexpected events in the external environment and therefore perfect decision making within the organization. According to several authors (Barney, 1991; Amit and Schoemaker, 1993; Peteraf, 1993; Winter, 1995; Grover et al., 2009), the Resource Based View (RBV) cites knowledge as a resource that can generate information asymmetries and thus a competitive advantage for the enterprises that possess it. Reconsidering the general theory on the RBV and including knowledge assets among an enterprise’s intangible resources easily results in the KBV. If the term “acquired resources” from the general RBV proposed by Lippman and Rumelt (1982) and Barney (1986) gets replaced by “knowledge,” the result is KBV theory, and knowledge represents one of the strategic factors for maintaining a competitive advantage (Grant and Baden-Fuller, 1995; Grant, 1996c; Teece et al., 1997; Sambamurthy and Subramani, 2005; Bach et al., 2008; Choi et al., 2008). The availability of content thus is necessary, but it is not a sufficient condition to improve the decision-making process and company performance. Rather, the company also needs to transform “passive” contents, such as unused information within the boundaries of organizational memory, into “active” sources that are integral to the decision-making process. To improve the decision-making process and create value, the enterprises must enrich the quality and quantity of all information that provides critical input to a decision. The goal therefore involves an ability to manage knowledge in- and outside the organization by transforming data into knowledge. In the case analyzed, decision-makers achieve the best performance not only improving the quantity and quality of input information to the decisional process but also thanks to a better formalization of the knowledge included in all phases of the process. In this view, ECM platforms are advanced KM tools that are fundamental for the development of a competitive advantage, in that they simplify and speed up the management (creation, classification, storing, change, deletion) of information, increase the productivity of each member, and improve the efficiency of the system (McKeever, 2003; Nordheim and Päivärinta, 2004; O' Callaghan and Smits, 2005). By implementing an ECM system, the company has not only an effective means for creating, tracking, managing, and archiving all company content but also can integrate business processes, develop collaborative actions through the systemic organization of work teams, and create a search engine with specialized “business logic views.” Standardized contents and layout, associated with a definition of content owners and users (i.e., management of authorizations), and document processes support the spread of updated, error-free information to various organizational actors. Similar to business intelligence systems, ECM platforms support decision making inside the organizations in terms of viewing and retrieving data and analyzing and sharing information—and thus increase organizational memory—as well as their storage and continuous maintenance along the life cycle of the enterprise. For the analysis of the case study, this study employs the action research method (Lewin, 1946; Checkland, 1985; Checkland and Scholes, 1990), and specifically Multiview2 (Avison and Wood-Harper, 2003). The original Multiview concept assumed a continuous interaction between analysts and method, including the present situation and the future scenario that originated by application of the methodology. In some respects, the original definition was limited, in that it did not describe the function of each element and the trend of possible interactions (Avison and Wood-Harper, 2003). Multiview2 fills these gaps by taking into consideration the action and reaction generated by the interactions of the elements. The three macro-categories therefore must be aligned to conduct an organizational, socio-technical, and technological analysis (Avison et al., 1998; Avison and Wood-Harper, 2003). The researcher provides a clear contribution that matches the theoretical framework used as a reference and measures and evaluates in subsequent phases the results obtained from those implemented actions.

Full textThis doctoral thesis proposes an in depth investigation of the ways in which organisations “think” and “behave” regarding the topic of environmental sustainability. The research project consists of four interrelated studies, each one aiming to achieve specific objectives: The first study explores the concept of “corporate environmental sustainability”, by means of a multi-disciplinary literature review. The results are synthesised and organised into a conceptual map that displays and integrates 19 areas of research and intervention. The review underlines the importance to integrate a “hard” or “technical” perspective with a “soft” or “human” perspective, when dealing with green issues in organisational contexts. The second study explores the meanings of “sustainability” and “sustainable development”, concepts, using the framework of Social Representations Theory. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of students (n=736). The study underlines the centrality of the ecological meaning, the recognition of the economic and social dimensions, and the specific characteristics ascribed to the two concepts. The third study concerns a preliminary exploration of organisations’ engagement towards environmental sustainability and towards ISO14001 certification. An online questionnaire was administered to a sample of companies (n=99). The results emphasise the need to: 1) in depth study the organisations’ greening experience; 2) understand how to make an effective use of ISO14001 certification; 3) explore organisational greening in the logistics sector specifically. The fourth study represents the “heart” of the thesis and attempts, on one hand, to better qualify the concept of “green organisational culture”, on the other hand, to understand the role of ISO14001 certification as a tool to promote green change in organisations. Grounded Theory methodology was used; 15 logistics companies and 3 certification bodies were involved, conducting 34 semi-structured interviews with top/middle management positions and with consultants. The results brought to: 1) a clear definition and characterisation of “green organisational culture” concept; 2) the identification of best practices for a “good” or “substantial” use of ISO14001 certification. The thesis discusses the importance of the “human side” of organisations – related to individual behaviour and people management – and the need to consider the “sensemaking processes” through which organisations give meaning to their greening experience.

Full textThe doctoral thesis discusses the public-private partnerships within the health sector. The thesis is made up of the following five chapters. The first chapter begins with public and private organizations distinctions. So it focuses only on public organizations, especially in reference to the evolution of public administration trends in management and organization subjects: from traditional administration to New Public Management, from Neo-Weberian State to New Public Governance. The second chapter deals with health sector characteristics, regarding its complex assets and the opportunity, as suggested by New Public Governance, to make public and private organizations collaborate. It then goes on to review the Italian health reforms, looking at its organizational forms and inter-organizational relations’ propensities. The third chapter regards inter-organizational characteristics in the network theory prospect: partner variety, objectives, inter-dependencies, coordination, etc. These characters are studied in relation to the hybrid network composition; involving public and private sectors. The fourth chapter, at first, presents notes on public-private partnerships from international academic literature. It distinguishes two different types of public-private partnerships: the contractual ones and the institutional ones. The two types are studied in their principal benefits and disbenefits. The chapter then presents the main Italian contractual forms of public-private partnerships, comparing them with, still little number of national studies on partnership phenomenon. The fifth chapter has an empirical nature. It includes the study of ten Italian public-private stabilized partnerships, (which means partnerships that are finally consolidated). The research method is in a form of a questionnaire, the choice of which is explained in regards to the content of the study. The research results then follow. The thesis ends with some remarks on the state of Italian partnerships, which are regarded as work in progress experiences.

Full textThe fragmentation of services for elderly with multimorbidity and frailty does guarantee neither effective and efficient care, nor the satisfaction of patients and their families. At international level, for decades, organizational models for “intermediate care” have been developing, as solution to emerging problems (aging, chronic disease, multiborbidity and frailty), to avoide inappropriate hospital admission and to delay long-term care. Consistent with national documents, Emilia-Romagna Region has been redefining community services and the acute hospital network with the aim of ensuring continuity of care and integration between hospital and community services, especially for people with chronic diseases, developing intermediate care and activating bed-based intermediate care services (Community Hospitals). The research project aimed to define – through the identification and analysis of specific indicators – a structured method for monitoring health care provided to patients in Community Hospitals in terms of clinical, organizational and patient perspective. The organizational model has been examined comparing three Community Hospital of Emilia-Romagna Region. Indicators have been analyzed to describe patients discharged from the Community Hospital of Castel San Pietro Terme (Imola Local Health Authority). The structured analysis and the identification of emerging clusters of patients admitted in Community Hospital, could provide important input for the best planning of integrated care pathways for patients. The description of clinical pathway of patients admitted in Community Hospitals may help to better define organizational strategies for both acute and community care, both health and social assistance, to enhance responses to patients' needs.

Full textThis work originates from the intersection of two fields of studies: that ones about the work identity construction, and the sport psychology studies about coaches. The first part of the work deepens the work identity process of construction in nowadays work organizations, characterized by fluidity and complexity. The proposal of a theoretic model of work identity is the way through which comes close to a specific work context in sport, the youth sectors. The coach’ role is recognized as central and critical at the same time in promoting athletes’ healthy development through sport, as well as in connecting all the actors involved in youth sport practice (athletes, parents, managers, sponsors, etc.). For this reason the empirical part of the work is an in depth examination about this professionals, youth coaches. The first study aims to explore and outline the features of youth soccer coaches’ work identity and to focus the main risks and resources of this. It involved 20 youth soccer coaches in semi-structured interviews and a focus-group The second study is a methodological proposal to better understand the work identity process. It presents a new research instrument the Professional Life Space Drawing (DSVP – Disegno dello Spazio di Vita Professionale in Italian), which allows collecting relevant information about the inner representation of professional space using a graphic-symbolic level. Finally the third study, starting from the crisis situation of these professionals, analyses a training-research project (which involved 11 coaches) to supporting youth coaches work identity.

Full textThis work is focused on blood donors. This research’s purpose is the discussion of the blood donation’s phenomenon in order to grasp the complexity of plural variables affecting this gesture, the significance of personal, family and organizational action related gifts. The research starts by the revision of the Transtheoretical Model by Prochaska and colleagues (1982) on blood donation (Ferguson, 1996, Ferguson and Chandler, 2005) and the Volunteer Process Model by Omoto and Snyder (1995; 2000). The donation action has been studied as a process: by the approach, the birth of Role Identity of donor (Piliavin et al., 1999), the rhythmic repetition of the gesture, and therefore loyalty. Participants are wide and varied: the first studies focus, in fact, on neodonors; the third study compares neodonors and retained donors, the fourth study, is focused on Retained donors. The thesis is composed by four research studies. The first study’s aim is to identify genders of people on the basis of the variables of the Stages of Change Scale. It shows how the subjects who donate cannot be considered as a homogeneous group considering their "readiness" to donate. It is evident, then, the need of building strategies for different reception. The second study develops a model of the explanatory factors determining the predisposition to donate blood in neodonors will. The third study confirms the influence of the family to engage in this act, and explores the motivations that substained this act. The fourth study shows clearly, maybe for the first time, the role of organizational variables in influencing not only the integration in Avis, but also the perceived satisfaction for the act of donation. The blood donation, in spite of being a personal choice action, derives from a constellation of personal variables, complementary and mutually intersecting. this complex systems here studied in its entirety in order to create more proper recruitment and maintaining strategies that can lead to the total satisfaction of blood supply needs.

Full textNowadays, companies find themselves working in a market characterized by a climate of uncertainty: customer needs change quickly and the markets are becoming more and more competitive. It is therefore important for companies to find ways to adapt with a certain reactivity, in order not to be overcome by the competition. Parallel to the evolution of the markets, there is an explosion in the amount of information that can be found both inside and outside the boundaries of the company, which is facilitated by the spread of computer networks and distributed systems, the first among them being the Internet. The need to manage information in a rational and organic way and the prospect of having to supply increasingly personalized goods and services, has led the companies to review their processes and their way of operating by relying on information systems. These are no longer simple information management software programs, but real active tools, a source of competitive advantage. We are talking about ERP, Enterprise Resource Planning, IT packages capable of integrating all the operational and administrative processes on a corporate basis. Integrated functionality systems supporting not only planning, but the entire decision-making dimension: they support business management in all its areas, from accounting to personnel management, from customer relations to suppliers and warehouses. Integration is possible not only thanks to particular (certain se vuoi lasciare particular sotto) software architectures, but also thanks to the fact that ERPs incorporate the "best practices", i.e. the most common process practices found/employed in excellent companies. More precisely, most of the most widespread systems consist of a central software core and the possibility of adding optional peripheral software modules, each concerning the management of a particular specific business area of defined competences (e.g. accounting, materials management, planning, production, etc.). Implementing an ERP system means "rethinking and changing" a company's way of acting; as a matter of fact, a transformation of a company involves an operational, strategic and inter-company plan. Thanks to the prescriptive feature, ERPs impose on the company a set of procedures that become simple and linear routines, eliminating the barriers between functions, and make the organization more agile and reactive. The implementation activity is very critical and delicate and can take a very long time, sometimes even more than 20 months. Other aspects that express the criticality of the project are the high costs to be incurred, the inclusion of the people involved in the process/project and the possibility of failure. Bearing in mind the above-described factors, in the first and second part of the thesis the concept of the ERP system will be studied in depth, defining its structure, evolution, advantages, limits and implementation phases, with particular reference to the process Reengineering phase, i.e. the redesign of the business processes. Finally, in the third and last part of the thesis, the project carried out at the companies of the "Bronzini Group" during the research doctorate will be presented. The project was developed as follows: In the first year: in-depth study of the currently available techniques, in order to understand how to improve them or replace them with innovative techniques. In the second year: configuration of the information system necessary for the implementation of these techniques and/or new techniques designed ad hoc into the business. In the third year: the implementation and subsequent analysis of the results achieved. This case study describes a project aimed at introducing a new latest-generation computer system with high-performance hardware, software (ERP) from the Microsoft Dynamics Navision 2015 package, capable of synergistically integrating all business processes and interconnections with the online world, which provides for a complete implementation in 2019. The analysis of the paper proposes an in-depth study of the situation in which the company presents itself, both in terms of activity and information, thus obtaining a “map” of the existing processes (called AS-IS). Thus, the needs and criticalities of the current management of the activities are noted, in order to outline the objectives to be pursued through the implementation of the new ERP system (TO-BE analysis). Finally, the GAP ANALYSIS is presented, as a comparison of the difference between the starting situation with the old management and the future perspective with the new solution adopted by the company. By implementing/using a new management system, the "Bronzini Group" aims to extend the process control to all the business areas involved and improve the entire flow of order management, from budgeting to invoicing and subsequent archiving and historical data management. The ultimate goal is to be able to provide a new tool in which all information is available to the people involved in the process/project, in order to optimize time and results and guarantee safety at work. Adapting innovative processes allows to obtain. • Reduction of the resources consumed, therefore also a cost reduction; • Reduction of the time of necessary for the execution of maintenance processes; • Improvement of the operativity/effectiveness of specialized personnel, also from the point of view of operational safety; • Improvement of the customers’ assets undergoing maintenance, in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability, productivity and safety at work; • Improvement of the overall service rendered to the customer, in terms of quality and professionalism, with consequent increase in competitiveness. Until a few years ago, companies were practically forced to create their information software like a tailored suit, commissioning software houses for that job, while today the case of purchasing “pre-packaged” ERP packages adaptable to the company’s needs through a process of "parameterization" is prevalent. The advantages offered by the latter are considerable, since the proposed solutions are the result of in-depth studies and advanced theories of information and management and, above all, have already been tested in other companies. The fixed costs of design and development are divided based on the number of packages produced and do not fall entirely on the ordering company. In the design and development of their products, the manufacturers of ERP consider the company as a whole and its processes, and not the individual functions, as was the case with the vast majority of software created ad hoc by smaller companies. Starting from these assumptions it is clear why it is noted that large companies are definitely moving towards the standard industrialized ERP systems. This is not the case with small companies, which prefer to purchase non-ERP systems and have tailor-made systems built by minor software houses at much lower costs than the “big” ERP. Small and medium-sized companies are therefore faced with the most difficult choice: having to decide whether to adopt a customized system or an ERP package. However, it is important for these companies to understand that, with the same functionality, a system custom-built by a software house certainly costs more than an equivalent pre-packaged one (meglio one se non è proprio necessario dire package, cioè se in questo caso sistema e pacchetto sono la stessa cosa). Starting from this consideration, it is clear that spending more money on an ERP system than on an ad hoc system means having a much higher number of features. These may seem superfluous at the time of purchase, but they are actually a guarantee of support for when the company has grown. Therefore, in the comparison between industrialized ERPs and specific tailor-made systems, it is necessary to take into account not only the cost, but also the opportunities represented and the investments that the company will have to sustain in the future to equate the functions of a specific system with those that an ERP system already contains. Some market researches certainly small and medium-sized companies in this direction and that is why all the major ERP manufacturers have already started to contend for this market sector. Having made the appropriate economic assessments and having taken the decision of which system to adopt, the real critical point, important to highlight in this work, is that, when choosing an ERP system to introduce into the company, it is not easy to immediately evaluate all the advantages because the results are not immediate either. My experience in the “Bronzini Group” goes precisely in this direction: having made the appropriate economic assessments, the decision was taken to adopt an ERP system designed to "adapt" to the needs of the company and therefore flexible and able to improve everything that revolves around each individual business process, including an increase in the company knowledge. However, with the non-immediate results and some problems that arose at the time of the introduction into the business, new needs not foreseen in the initial project arose continuously. This is because reproducing a company system on "paper" is one thing, but reproducing it in the new reality is another. Not all the problems can be foreseen and therefore the fundamental factor must be the ability to be able to manage the new critical issues, relying on reliable partners and trusting in a prepared and solid company structure. Regarding the choice of a reliable partner: the preliminary analysis carried out is adequate and with a very high degree of detail. The expected benefits reflect the mission, which, in fact, places the priority on transforming the need to respond to new market requirements into opportunities for renewal, and it is through the use of a new ERP that the “Bronzini Group” aims to improve its business and increase its competitive capacity in the long term despite the implementation difficulties that this ERP entails. Microsoft Dynamics, for example is a relatively simple system both in terms of installation and use because it maintains the operating logic of all Microsoft software that is distributed on a global scale and that everyone is already familiar with. On the other hand, however, even though the functions provided by Dynamics are numerous, it is not possible to model all the business processes through this ERP. All things considered, Microsoft Dynamics turns out to be a fairly stable system, light and easy to use, perfectly integrated with all Microsoft tools (e.g. Office) and does not require months of training for an operator to be able to use it. Installing an ERP system involves a number of factors that are to be considered at the time of purchase since it is not a simple software that is installed on the client side, the license is paid, and everything is solved. The installation of an ERP system requires an analysis of business processes in order to model them, and this implicates a big change in the work methodology of the company, which, however, is necessary to obtain a good competitive advantage in terms of profit margins. It is fundamental to understand first what is more convenient: a light system with less functionality or one that is complete but more complex to use – if this analysis is not done on time, there is a great risk of losing a lot of money. Another aspect that is not to be underestimated is the pre-implementation phase, where it is critical to identify the needs (analysis of business processes) that should be fulfilled. If from the beginning, during the planning phase, a careful analysis of one's own needs is carried out, involving the main corporate figures, one can be sure that the probability of successful introduction of the ERP will be high. The critical point of the project was in fact the involvement of the company staff in the analysis and the modification/improvement phase of the business processes because it had such an innovative and revolutionary impact on the existing operating structure that it was not always easy to involve the corporate figures responsible for the process in the right way. The implementation project for a new innovative integrated information system has involved performing a series of internal "research and development" activities in collaboration with external Logical System personnel aimed at: a) design and development of new innovative processes b) acquisition, combination, structuring and use of existing scientific, technological and commercial knowledge and skills in order to produce plans, projects or designs for new, modified or improved products, processes or services. The project was born from the company's need to computerize various processes, in order to automate and standardize information flows, save time, minimize errors and eliminate all the customization of documentation, descriptions and procedures inherent in manual management. When the project was started, and still, in the current state of the art, on the market, there is no system capable of covering all the activities that the “Bronzini Group” manages, which are different for each area of activity. Therefore, the only viable solution for computerization was, and remains, to develop a customized system. We are moving from an "information technology" characterized by a scarcity of data, to a new and innovative one that has an abundance of data, which can be increasingly acquired automatically, with speed of exchange and communication in exponential growth, and with globalized access to information. Furthermore, the type of information handled is also changing significantly. Today, the information is all multimedia and hypermedia – that is a composition of information elements of different types (text, images, videos, sounds, procedures, programs and so on) – and these information aggregates can be interconnected with each other by creating a semantic network with high complexity and without dimensional limits, which can also bring hidden aspects to the surface, in essence it can make knowledge emerge automatically. Finally, we cannot overlook the fact that the current automated systems are no longer limited to the task of preserving bits, which must however be interpreted by "humans" so that they are recognized as information. The current automated systems can now act on the basis of the information already present in the system and processed automatically, producing a direct impact on the reality of the "humans", without their aid. Today the project has led to the development of new, completely innovative technical solutions that are already having a very significant impact in the management process of the various branches of activity of the company, especially in the maintenance sector. The project involved: - Internal resources of all the various company areas, for the analysis of the flows and the design of the block diagrams of the various specific procedures; - Technical and project management sectors, for the software development; - External IT consultants, for the design of the software, platforms and interfaces. The project, started in 2015, is currently in full development phase. Given the enormous investment already made in this area and considering that there is no tool on the market able to satisfy all the needs of their business, the company has anyway deemed appropriate to invest additional resources in developing the system so that it works correctly and effectively and automates all business processes in the medium/long term.

The thesis takes away from these considerations, related to recovery-oriented approaches. The aim is to analyze how organizations can promote the health and social participation and accept the point of view of users and their families, through the introduction of innovative practices. I analyze two Italian cases: “Doing Together” (a project of the Mental Health Service of Trento) and “Social Point” (a service of the Department of Mental Health of Modena). Two issues emerged from qualitative data: (1) the organizational cultural change related to the introduction of a new approach, centered on participation and (2) the formalization of the participatory practices, with positive and negative consequences. In conclusion, I propose possible development for future research and suggestions to managers of health services.

Full textThe Italian prison system is affected by deep organisational changes which affect the work of prison officers. The implementation of the so called “dynamic security” within detention wings is likely to redefine the interaction patterns between the staff and offenders. The “dynamic security” is regarded as an innovative surveillance procedure which relies on the observation and the knowledge of the offenders, rather than on their physical control. According to policy makers, the “dynamic security” is not just an innovative way of ensuring security, but it should also represent a “new way of being” of prison officers (de Pascalis 2013). The implementation of this organisational change raises questions regarding its influence on the daily life of offenders and prison guards and their interaction within a changing environment. This research focuses on the influence of the implementation of the “dynamic security” on prison officers role identity. It aims to shed light on the identity related dimension of the prison work within a context that I defined as “liminal” by virtue of the coexistence of two antithetical institutional objectives, that is to say, rehabilitation and reclusion. Indeed, responses to organizational changes cannot be understood and interpreted without taking into consideration the dynamics and processes of identification in the role of prison officer. This research will highlight the conditions which can facilitate the transition to new work practices and foster prison officer wellbeing, through the analysis of the processes of identification within the changing environment of prison.

Full textThe Entrepreneurial University concept represents an evolutive model of university, coherent with the required changes from the historical context which identifies the knowledge as a fundamental pillar to promote economic and social development. The University adds to the traditional high education and research missions a third mission, whose task is to integrate the first two and contribute building links with local contexts in order to transfer and acquire knowledge. The establishment of the third mission means innovative relationship models that require answers from the academic governance regarding policies, organization and resources allocation. The impact of the third mission on the universities and on the communities creates the conditions for a different culture and role of the University. The aim of this research is to investigate the consequences of the structuring of the third mission on universities. Two analyzes are proposed: first, the improvement triggered by public engagement, one of the most complex areas of the third mission; second, a structural organisation aspect, namely the introduction in the academic context of a monitoring process and an impact assessment. The first part of the research focuses on the evolution of the role of the University. The analysis recalls, in the light of the literature, some of the most relevant steps that created the idea of Entrepreneurial University and third mission, by proposing a view of the University as completly involved in the economic and social system. We investigate the relationships between the university with the growth models of innovation generation, starting from Triple Helix, open innovation, EU policies of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Social Innovation, up to the definitions of third mission and social impact. Starting from a theoretical framework, the second chapter focuses on the implications of public engagement and co-creation between universities and companies, with reference to case studies of entrepreneurship education related to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. In particular, we study how these implications are managed, how they are implemented and what consequences they generate. The study deepens subjects under researched in the literature which is more concentred in the mere analysis of the relations between companies and consumers. The third chapter investigate a more general organizational issue, namely the monitoring and impact. The assessment of the size of the structural changes generated by the university, in the context of the knowledge economy, is increasingly relevant. The literature seems to confirm the difficulties in providing shared metrics and indicators since the nature, history and context of each university do not allow the identification of universal indicators. In this regard, a case study related to the introduction of the monitoring and evaluation processes of the third mission at the University of Milan is proposed: by evaluating the elements of organizational complexity of a system aimed to monitore and enhance the impact of the third mission in a large university. The conclusions summarize the results of the research providing a coherent view of the topics covered. The common thread in the case studies analysis, refers to the learning processes gathered by the Universities, highlighting the changes generated in terms of policies, organization, knowledge and resources and, finally, forecasting a vision for the long run.
