Full textBackground Organizational health, well-being and quality of life in health care settings are issues of increasing interest for nurse managers. It is important in health care setting to evaluate organizational health of nurses with a method of active listening that will bring out the perception they have about their own organization. Researching in their field of organizational health, managers can analyze their context and define actions that take into account the suggestions of their staff. Objectives During the three-year of the doctoral program it has been designed and implemented a research study with the aim of assessing the organizational health of nurses. The following research objectives have been identified: A. to identify in the literature and eventually to develop or modify a specific instrument for assessing the organizational health of nurses; B. to correlate the organizational health with the quality of life in nurses; C. to identify correlations between organizational health and clinical care contexts; D. to carry out an investigation on a large number of nurses in order to develop a manual for nurse managers. This manual will allow nurse managers to easily assess the organizational health on their working environment. Methods The Nursing Organizational Health Questionnaire (NOHQ), that has been derived from the Multidimensional Organizational Health Questionnaire (MOHQ) has been developed in the present study. The NOHQ underwent to content validity ad was administered to a sample of 1279 nurses. Eighteen dimensions (scales) have been identified by factor analysis each of one showed good psychometric properties of validity and reliability. To reach the second objective of the research, a survey was conducted on a sample of 411 nurses working in the territorial emergency. In this study the NOHQ and the SF-12 (to measure quality of life) were administered. Overall, male nurses had better mental health, better perception of their coordinators and higher appreciation (in terms of effectiveness and organizational efficiency) for their organization. Female nurses complained more psychophysical symptoms and showed more negative indicators of organizational health. For the third objective, 542 nurses were recruited in several university hospital in Italy: 337 nurses were enrolled from Medical Units and 205 from the Operating theaters. In this study it was demonstrated that operating room nurses had lower levels of organizational health and satisfaction than their colleagues working in the Medical Units. Statistical analysis also revealed that the organizational health did not differ among age and gender. With regard to the manual (objective D) a study with 4334 nurses was carried out in several health settings. This manual meticulously explains the different steps to investigate the organizational health in one’s own health context. It also gives procedures to administer the NOHQ, elaborate the data and understand the results. Conclusions The various studies conducted over three years allowed the validation of a new tool to measure the organizational health of nurses. It was possible to demonstrate how the quality of life of nurses is closely related to their organization and how some specific organizational circumstances can affect the mental and physical health in male and female nurses as well as in younger and older nurses. It was also demonstrated how the working context can affect the organizational health in nurses. In the medical units nurses have better organizational health than in the operating theaters; this means that in the first context nurses have a more positive perception of their organization, probably due to the relational and communicational aspects with patients. Finally, the manual will give the opportunity to nurse managers to better manage the personnel, carrying out surveys in their contexts, to properly use the NOHQ, to elaborate the data and to interpret the results.

Full textThe purpose of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the choice of adopting an anticipation strategy of adversities in the small business context. The first paper is aimed to explore the organisational and individual (entrepreneurial) factors associated with the choice of adopting a strategy that aims to anticipate and prepare for potential threats for the business survival. The second paper is aimed to investigate the outcome of this choice, in terms of firm performance and in relation to the organisational structure. Building on the recent capability-based conceptualisation of resilience, the first paper aims to explore whether the experience of a previous crisis and entrepreneur resilience are associated with Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs’) adoption of different anticipation strategies for adversities. Using original survey data on 959 Italian and German SMEs, the research uses a multinomial logistic regression model in order to test the influence of the prior experience of a crisis and the entrepreneur resilience on the likelihood of adopting different anticipation strategies. The paper shows that the previous experience of a crisis increases the likelihood of regularly adopting proactive but non-formalised anticipation actions while decreasing the likelihood of adopting a pure reactive strategy to adversities; in addition, entrepreneur resilience is nonlinearly associated with anticipation strategies. The main originalities rely on eschewing a pure binary view in relation to the organisational choice of adopting a reactive or a proactive approach toward adversities and on considering the entrepreneur resilience as a factor with both ‘bright’ and ‘dark’ side effects in relation to the anticipation of adversities. The second paper is aimed to investigate the benefit of adopting an anticipation mentality in SMEs. Anticipation of adversities improves the potential resilience of a firm. However, no prominent studies have investigated (1) the influence of the adoption of a strategy that aims to anticipate and prepare for an adversity on the firm performance in a small business context, and (2) the role of the organisational structure in amplifying or diminishing the positive effects of the adoption of an anticipation strategy of adversities. The purpose of this paper is to shed some light on the benefit of building potential resilience in SMEs and the role of the organisational structure. Using an original dataset of 409 Italian SMEs, our research uses a Generalized Structural Equation Modelling in order to test whether the adoption of an anticipation strategy of adversities influences the firm performance and whether there is a mediation effect of the organisational structure. Our paper shows the positive influence of the anticipation and preparation for adversities on the firm performance and the partial mediation effect of the coordination mechanism based on standardisation. The originalities rely on the investigation of the benefit related to the adoption of an anticipation strategy of adversity in small business context out of an actual crisis and the link that we suggest between organisational resilience and organisational structure. Cultivating the potential resilience of the firm and the coordination mechanisms based on standardisation means improving the performance even if an actual crisis does not happen.

Full textPressure for innovation, globalization, need to work quickly, international competition, adaptability and flexibility: these are complex days for organizations. Internalizing, then, the normality of investments, the development and implementation of intangible resources and of human resources, to obtain profitable results, we obtain an increasingly complex picture. This is the primary objective of this work: to study the world of connections that exist between managing people in companies and obtaining better results. If concerning organizations there is an incessable and frightening increase in complexity, on the side of the academy there is a real intellectual crisis, of position. The scientific impulse towards the deep understanding of themes from immaterial nuances, towards the statistical and unifying research of links with the characteristics of causality and the almost emotional desire to freely use the concepts related to human capital, intellectual capital, intangibles goods and their connection with performance, has created divergent thoughts and has seen the application of models whose conceptual limitations upstream affect the universal applicability. Although this was - and is - a fertile ground for confrontation rather than a motive for harmony, Becker et al., in 1998, brought the human being into the center of strategic models aimed to obtaining better performances; thus, they formalized the concept of connection between the good practices of Human Resource Management (HRM) and organizational performance (P). The theory and practice then defined this concept HRM-P Link. Sons of productivity, of competition and of the need to cut costs, we are, however, more and more burdened by rational systems of measurement, which, in its infinite logical dimensions, takes the form of the common practice of applying a deeply rooted scientific approach in the sense of «causality as regularity». It is precisely in this moment that we reach a limit and set problems related to rationality, causality, the dimension of the boundaries within which to operate and the definition of what is accessed first and what happens then. This work does not pretend to solve the issues related to the debate of the HRM-P Link, nor to cut the Gordian knot that afflicts it. On the contrary, this work is inserted in a precise context, defines its boundaries, analyzes nuances and marries critical and qualitative thoughts. To adhere to the immaterial line of thought of qualitative measurement and of the research for connections and «over-connections» does not mean, however, to deviate from the rationality and reliability of data and measurements; reading real facts with the eye of qualitative critique provides a different idea on which to base analyzes aimed at making the thoughts more homogeneous. In this context, it is married the purist principle, critical in its spirit, according to which constant relations, from the scientific point of view, are not sufficient to explain or establish causal links. The idea that such links must be found in the world of the immaterial link to the deep meanings, to the mechanisms, to the powers and to the tendencies, is rooted to the point of directing the analysis into a precise logical and rational context. This, then, the specific objective of this work: to support the empirical research on HRM-P Link to become even more rational, to ground their empirical evidence, their numbers, in the qualitative sea made of connections that are not found, or showing a weak correlation. Explaining the relationship between HRM and performance thus becomes an act of general understanding of organizational, strategic and managerial dynamics. An act in which empirical research does not conflict with social and qualitative research, but rather integrates it to generate all-encompassing theories.

Full textThis doctoral thesis proposes an in depth investigation of the ways in which organisations “think” and “behave” regarding the topic of environmental sustainability. The research project consists of four interrelated studies, each one aiming to achieve specific objectives: The first study explores the concept of “corporate environmental sustainability”, by means of a multi-disciplinary literature review. The results are synthesised and organised into a conceptual map that displays and integrates 19 areas of research and intervention. The review underlines the importance to integrate a “hard” or “technical” perspective with a “soft” or “human” perspective, when dealing with green issues in organisational contexts. The second study explores the meanings of “sustainability” and “sustainable development”, concepts, using the framework of Social Representations Theory. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of students (n=736). The study underlines the centrality of the ecological meaning, the recognition of the economic and social dimensions, and the specific characteristics ascribed to the two concepts. The third study concerns a preliminary exploration of organisations’ engagement towards environmental sustainability and towards ISO14001 certification. An online questionnaire was administered to a sample of companies (n=99). The results emphasise the need to: 1) in depth study the organisations’ greening experience; 2) understand how to make an effective use of ISO14001 certification; 3) explore organisational greening in the logistics sector specifically. The fourth study represents the “heart” of the thesis and attempts, on one hand, to better qualify the concept of “green organisational culture”, on the other hand, to understand the role of ISO14001 certification as a tool to promote green change in organisations. Grounded Theory methodology was used; 15 logistics companies and 3 certification bodies were involved, conducting 34 semi-structured interviews with top/middle management positions and with consultants. The results brought to: 1) a clear definition and characterisation of “green organisational culture” concept; 2) the identification of best practices for a “good” or “substantial” use of ISO14001 certification. The thesis discusses the importance of the “human side” of organisations – related to individual behaviour and people management – and the need to consider the “sensemaking processes” through which organisations give meaning to their greening experience.

Full textFinancial Services are always being recognized like robustness and trust institutions (Bianchi 2002). In fact they always give a fundamental contribute to the stability of economic and social environment. This fact in some conditions, like the present ones, has often created very large financial crisis. More than in the past Italian laws in the financial services, aim at prevent some risk like operational, compliance and reputational ones. The theory of Coercive Isomorphism aim at explains how the organizations try to legitimate themselves towards their social and economic environment. In this direction the study aim at analyzed how coercive isomorphism had influenced the organizational design in the Italian insurance sector. In order to explain this process I used the RBV (Resource Based View) theory to explain how reputation could be a very strategic resource to gain robustness and trust in financial institutions after the crisis, so I analyzed how organization build reputation trough the processes compliance to the new law.

Full textThe activities carried out by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) expose them to different risks related to their activities: both image risks (allegations of fraud, corruption, etc.) and risks related to employment as a first front in the event of a natural disasters. This thesis focuses on the development of practical solutions aimed at NGOs, to facilitate their management reorganization, and to all entities entitled to emergency management, to assess their actions in the event of natural disasters. A practical methodology based on the analysis of risk and implementation plan was proposed to assess the activity and integrated with the BPMN modelling technique to formalize and consolidate operational practices. This allows to represent the work process of an NGO as a starting point to increase efficiency and reduce risks for operators. This technique was useful to formalize those work processes that in Caritas Senigallia were carried out as "practice" and without supporting documentation. The thesis also addresses the issue of immediate action by NGOs in the face of the occurrence of a natural disaster. The proposed framework was applied to the analysis of interventions supported by the Caritas Senigallia Foundation during the 2014 flood in Senigallia and carried out through investigations with questionnaires aimed at operators in conjunction with IDEF0 modeling " as-is." This has led to a more systematic, rigorous and comprehensive analysis of the overall analysis of humanitarian action. At the same time, the NGO's management of donated goods during the flood was analysed and scope for improvement in the management of donations during future emergencies was identified. The results of this latest study could be the starting point for guidelines for the management of asset donations at national level.

Full textThe crisis of "theater as a public service" exemplified on the Piccolo Teatro experience, shows its internal dissatisfaction at the end of the fifties. The firsts who fights against this cultural politic was the artists, Carmelo Bene it's one of the first with his early and provocative performances. By critical side, otherwise, is more difficult to identify some critics or intellectuals bearing of a similar explosive rupture. We can recall Arbasino and Flaiano but, in this case, also if their sensitive criticism against "Theatre Established" were very important, they can not be regarded as promoters of that different way of criticism outgoing from Ivrea Conference (1967) and that accompanied New Theatre from the Sixties to Eighty . But definitively what's this new "operation" criticism? Primarily this criticism is focused on a new operative manner that located itself at the threshold of writing practices. It's a criticism embracing a gradual, but steady removal from the theatrical chronicles, a radically rethink about the critical function so it finds very interesting to create new operational areas on magazines and focused publishing, on mass-media like radio and television and as organization of festivals, conferences, exhibitions and awards - both performative both theoretical- who are identified as "the criticism that dirting its hands". The second part of the thesis is a documentary collection on today. From Manifesto del Critico Impuro written in 2003 in Prato by a group of critics of the last generation, the thesis uses that Statement as a starting point for creating a small record based on some elaboration by someone among the most significant critical experiences of these last ten years. Interesting Appendix based on rare materials.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze organizational change in a social network analysis perspective, exploiting longitudinal data collected after a modification of the organizational structure in an Italian Teaching Hospital The manuscript is organized into three papers. The first paper focuses on the theme of the relationship between formal networks and informal networks, analyzing how the modification of the first involves a corresponding variation in the second. The paper demonstrates how, in the absence of formalized organizational structures, individuals tend to establish new ties with colleagues who belong to the same specialization. The second paper, drawing purely from the organizational behavior literature, analyzes the issue of the network dynamics , providing evidence and antecedents for network stability in response to organizational change. Particular attention is also given to the intra - team dynamics and the impact of individual perception of collective properties in driving employees in accepting or not the organizational change. Finally, the third paper develops the theme of network density and how the latter can be related to organizational change, in terms of reaction to change. Furthermore, it is shown how formalization has a positive impact on network density, especially in organizational contexts characterized by a low hierarchy and horizontal coordination.
