Abstract:
This paper attempts to investigate the degree to which organized crime affects FDI in 15 Latin America and Caribbean countries during 2006-2014 period. We employed four crime proxies: homicide rate, organized crime index, business cost of terrorism index and business cost of crime index and analyzed their impact on overall, sectoral and industrial FDI inflows. We find evidence of a deterrent effect of organized crime on FDI inflows; in particular on FDI in secondary and tertiary sectors. On the contrary FDI inflows in more extractive industries - primary sector - are less affected by the presence of organized crime

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to give a realistic and updated perspective on the activity of the main international criminal organizations, characterizing them using historical-evolutionary analysis of the conditions that contributed to their emergence, the complex “modus operandi” in which each one moves, the dynamic that they developed, the expansion they have achieved and the threat they represent in the process of globalization of the economy and society. It is true that criminal organizations exist at least since antiquity, such as the concepts of good and evil, justice, crime and punishment. But organised crime in the west, as we know it, it is a phenomenon that came up just a little over a century and it has expanded, diversified and even strengthened, with more or less setbacks, in all parts of the globe, having become a quieter but no less deadlier than terrorism or climatic cataclysms of regional scale. Therefore, in addition to an approach of the specificities of each organization, it is important to refer to the most effective mechanisms of research, the prosecution and punishment of such phenomenon, as well as some relevant conventions and international law for such purpose. Having analyzed the main criminological aspects of this reality, it should be referred the potential dangers to Portugal, bearing in mind its European integration and current knowledge available. This dissertation arises from study, persistent data cross analysis, and reflection by consulting diverse bibliography, critically appreciating a large number of articles and news published in the foreign press, as well as the information provided (in a more open and reserved manner) by international organizations and prestigious police forces, such as the FBI, the USA Congress, the European Council and European Commission (through other sponsoring organizations).

Abstract:
America’s schools were founded on the principle that a democratic nation needed informed, active, and knowledgeable citizens in order to realize the promise of democracy. Over the last 400 years, we have lost our way. Today’s schools do a poor job of preparing our students to be engaged, open-minded, and purposeful participants in a system of government that cannot thrive without their meaningful involvement. The costs of our neglect are significant and evidenced by growing economic, social, and political disparities that threaten our core values and ideals. Fortunately, all hope is not lost. We know that quality civic education programming can be a powerful tool in shaping youth into the citizens we need. We also know that effective civic education programming can lead to a host of desired outcomes at the individual, school, and community levels. Unfortunately, we also know that this type of programming rarely finds its way into schools. My strategic project with Community Law in Action, a Baltimore nonprofit organization, first focuses on how I designed and implemented one particularly promising type of civic education programming, youth organizing. Youth organizing empowers and values youth by offering them the opportunity to authentically engage in the process of bringing change to their communities. I discuss the best practices in youth organizing programming and reflect on the challenges and successes I encountered in introducing youth organizing into a classroom of juniors at a large, urban high school. The second stage of my project addresses the thorny issue of how to scale a successful program within the broader civic education sector. I begin by describing the obstacles that can impair any effort to scale within the civic education sector and make recommendations for sector-level solutions with a focus on establishing a more compelling value proposition for civic education generally. I then draw upon scaling research and theory to outline how a small nonprofit can develop a robust youth organizing model capable of successfully scaling within the sector.

Abstract:
In Peru, The National Health Authority (SUSALUD) is granted the responsibility to promote, protect and defend the health rights of every citizen. However, in the Peruvian Health System (PHS) there exists an insufficient culture of health rights, a low level of knowledge of health rights by the population, and a limited degree of cooperation between users, providers and funders. In light of this limited popular participation in the health rights of the citizenry, it has been necessary for SUSALUD to pursue various activities in order to promote the exercise of health rights by Peruvians. Among the strategies implemented are the development of Organized Boards of Users (OBU) and a Program of Integrated Actions for the Promotion of Health Rights (PIAPHI). The aim of both interventions is to increase the level of trust between citizens and government, which fosters and strengthens the capacity of citizens to pursue their health rights. In this article we begin with a brief presentation on the state of knowledge, attitudes and practices of users of the health system regarding their rights. Then we explain both programs, their goals and procedures, and a general description of their activities. Also, some indicators of process and some results are presented along with discussion and future prospects. We believe that the gradual implementation of the OBU and PIAPHI programs will enhance the participation of Peruvians in their health system, and will contribute positively to their empowerment and the pursuit of their health rights.

Armaroli, Ilaria. "The role of a local trade union in the promotion of direct employee voice in workplaces: Towards organised disintermediation?" Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Bergamo, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10446/128671.

Full text
Abstract:
Set against the background of the increasing centrality of knowledge in production processes and the subsequent affirmation of managerial-led forms of cognitive employee participation in many Western economies, this research project concentrates on the role of trade unions, considered as traditional bulwarks of workers’ voice, in response to this trend. In the context of a large literature generally depicting a quite conservative trade union approach to these changes, the purpose of this research is to empirically assess how and why trade unions do intervene in the promotion, regulation and implementation of non-union, and usually managerial-led, forms of employee voice (e.g. meetings of temporary groups or committees, continuous improvement groups, suggestion schemes, employee surveys, etc.). Given the direct and immediate (since not mediated by unions) labour-management relationships that these practices would imply, the concept of organising disintermediation is introduced in the first section to sythetise this trade union orientation. To achieve the research purpose, a longitudinal case study is developed and based on the experience of FIM-CISL of Brescia, a local metalworkers’ organisation situated in the North of Italy, which since 2016 has engaged in the development of 4 projects of work organisational innovation via direct employee participation in 4 different productive units. After describing the environmental and institutional contexts where the trade union operates as well as its own identity (by following a theoretical framework which essentially draws on Dunlopian systems theory and new-sociological institutionalism), data and information concerning the trade union’s discourse and action are collected mainly via the methods of field research, participant observation and the conduction of semi-structured interviews with union officials (7), delegates (10) and a union-selected consultant. Results show: the reality of the perspective of union-organised disintermediation, that by taking up a Polanyian approach, is viewed as a union-led countermovement for the (re)embeddedness of workers’ knowledge and participation within the framework of collective representation and industrial relations; the relevance of the theme of the reconciliation between apparently opposite domains (i.e. union functional and institutional goals; environmental pressures and union subjective features; the logic of membership/organising and the logic of influence/partnership of labour’s association) both as a trigger for union proactive mobilisation and as an enabler of the effectiveness of union actions; the openness of industrial relations to new players (i.e. consultants) and instruments (i.e. communal project management complementing collective bargaining) as the topic of organisational innovation requires to shift the focus from interests and rules to goals and processes; and the potential role of industrial relations, embodying the seeds of a self-organisation of commons, for the communal management of knowledge in profit-oriented firms.

Abstract:
In this study, Hazardous Waste Production potential for the selected priority sectors in OSTIM Organized Industrial Zone (OIZ), Ankara is investigated. A general inventory study is conducted based on both absolute and minor entries in Waste List of Regulation on General Principles of Waste Management, Annex 4. Processes included in priority sectors are identified
moreover, each process is analyzed in terms of inputs entering and outputs leaving. Generated hazardous wastes from each sector are classified as process based, side processes based, and non-process based. After determination of codes and amounts of wastes, hazardous qwaste generation factors are generally calculated as "
kg of waste generated per ton of product or raw material processed"
. Calculated hazardous waste generation factors are compared with the estimated ones in literature if there is any and a specific range is determined for each waste factor. By use of sector specific hazardous waste generation factors and total capacity values sectoral hazardous waste generation amounts are calculated for OSTIM OIZ. The most crowded and potentially polluter sectors are determined from 14 main producer sectors of OSTIM OIZ. Accordingly, machining, casting of ferrous metals, treatment and coating of metals, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and manufacture of rubber products are selected priority sectors studied in this thesis study. It is observed that among selected priority sectors highest generation occurs in machining sector, which involve high amounts of 12 01 coded HWs as metal grindings and waste oil mixtures. In addition, manufacturing of rubber products sector has no significant hazardous waste generation.

The discussions concerning the absence of a management model appropriate to the peculiarities of third sector organizations have not been impeditive to their emphasized expansion in the last decades. In the attempt of understanding this phenomenon from the perspective of those who manage social organizations, this work based on the theory of social representations to understand the notion that organization managers of the third sector - based in Fortaleza CE - have of the part that they play and how this notion influences the direction of their activities. Social representations of managers of four different categories of non-governmental organizations have been investigated, each category composed of two unities. The categories researched were: social integration through art and education, prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug abuse, children s health assistance and community action. By using Doise s Societal Approach, the role of social managers translated in intraindividual, interindividual and situational processes of their actions, has been analysed within the social representations, focusing on beliefs, values, symbols and stories that give meaning to the existence of non-governmental organizations. Analysis and discussion of data displayed the existence of diversity in the understanding of managers within their practice, in other words, the management profile is also its own manager s. The branch where an organization acts is also preponderant in the shaping of a management style. It could be deduced, from to the organizations researched, that professional formation and the manager s social insertion mainly, are determinative factors in the outlining of a management model of its own. It was concluded that, due to heterogeneity of interests and action segments, there is no systematic process for social management among organizations. Management styles are supported by their director s own perception of achievement, who model organizations according to their contingencies

Abstract:

The present report is the result of an applied research in the educational entities of the third sector, aiming to demonstrate whether the financial influences the perception of users on the image of those entities. For both used the prospect of integrative marketing relationship adapting to and developing a set of indicators which bore the measurement of images from the model of Machado et al (2005) and Kotler and Fox (1994). The sample included a total of 187 parents and financial responsibility in 03 (three) institutions of education in Natal / RN. These data were processed by multivariate statistical analysis, factor analysis, linear regression, analysis of cluster and discriminant analysis. The factor analysis also identified 6 images perceived by users of services. Next were the relationships of cause and effect between the financial and images formed. In discriminant analysis, was identified two distinct groups of parents and guardians with financial perceptions similar and well defined. The result of the work shows that the differential level of financial participation of parents and guardians not influence the formation of the images formed from educational institutions of the third sector
Esses dados foram tratados atrav?s de an?lises estat?sticas multivariadas, an?lise fatorial, regress?o linear, an?lise de cluster e an?lise discriminante. It is noticed that, at the present time, there is an approximation between market, State and Civil Society, and that in this tripartite relationship Civil Society occupies more and more space in the public sphere, increasing the importance of the role of Social Movements and the Third Sector as alternatives to achieve social welfare. This research observed the development of Social Movements and the Third Sector in the world, and especially in Brazil, verifying how were the forms of action and democratic participation of these entities after the end of the military dictatorship and, mainly, perceiving how social emancipation ocurrs by means of the current forms of being and doing politics of associations, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations and the collective movements of struggle and resistance. An analysis was made of the evolution of the Third Sector in the world, observing its conceptual difficulty and the new forms of contracting and partnership provided by Law 13.019/14. The role of the Social Movements and the Third Sector was verified for the new emancipatory social practices and some concrete cases of these practices in Brazil were analyzed. For this analysis were considered theoretical currents and their contributions, as well as data and information taken from official sites, interviews with members of collective movements and associations.

Abstract:
The present thesis concerns the nature, the contents and the role of the "nonorganized" masonry sector in building construction in meknes (morocco). At first a typology is built among the firms to characterize the sector, diversity and the dynamics of its components ; then is analyzed the co-existence of this sector with the other component of the building industry : the "organized" sector. It appears that coexistence is not conflictual : the relationships are rather dominationcomplementarity oriented, each element having its own social utility and operation conditions dictated by the capitalist dominant logic. The analysis leads to question the idea of a simple dualism of the construction industry, and opens to a new interpretation of the "non-organized" sector and its relationships to capitalist-type production and to society in general

Adopting good project portf??lio management practices benefits private and public organizations by prioritizing and aligning projects with organizational strategy. In this sense, over the last decades, codes of best practices have been launched in project portf??lio management that gather recommendations on the theme. This research project aims to develop a survey of the maturity of project portf??lio management focusing on the Federal Public Administration (APF) agencies, through the adoption of best practice guidelines with emphasis on the Management System Project Portf??lio Management Methodology of Information Technology Resources (MGPP - SISP), under the Ministry of Planning Budget and Management (MPOG). For this, the technical procedures used in this research were content analysis, application of online questionnaire and analysis of data collected. Content analysis allowed the organization of the six dimensions of the maturity model proposed by Almeida (2015) in objective questions to evaluate the maturity levels in each dimension. The application of the model was performed through the online survey, which had the participation of Federal Public Administration bodies. The data analyzes showed that, in general, there is a low maturity of the organs surveyed in project portf??lio management. The research contributes to the understanding of the current situation of maturity in project portf??lio management of public organizations and can serve as a reference for future comparisons and support to improve maturity in project portf??lio management practices and consequent improvement of public governance.

The strategy has an important role in organizations by identifying factors that need to be emphasized to organizational success and strategic map currently contemplates as a preview of organizational strategy, prepared from your planning. Third sector organizations need to take a competitive posture, establishing a sustainable position and maximizing the use of resources towards their social or humanitarian goals. This research aims to investigate the process of building strategic maps of two non-profit organizations by identifying and characterizing the steps common to these organizations. The research is characterized as qualitative descriptive and applied knowledge. Developed from bibliographical reviews and participant observation gathered in a case study, the data was collected in two third sector organizations and the results show that how to conduct the process may influence directly on your result lists. Among the steps identified, emphasis can be given to the formation of a team, the definition of strategy, the definition of strategic objectives, the gathering of those goals into perspective and the identification of the cause-effect relationship that relate. Marked as optional, but effective, conducting an event outside the premises of the company to complete the process, or any portion thereof. However, stands out as essential the active participation of senior management in the process, as a way to give credit to the initiative. These steps, its characteristics and its factors are described from comparisons between the processes adopted by the organizations surveyed

The methodology Balanced Scorecard (BSC) focuses on the major critical issues of modern organizations, whether with or without profit. The measurement of the effective performance of the latter is by evaluating the successful implementation of organizational strategy. The aim of this paper is to present the development of a system of performance measurement strategy for a nonprofit organization, whose object of study is the Associa??o de Apoio as Comunidades do Campo - AACC, in the context of the BSC methodology of Kaplan and Norton. The methodology of this case study is an exploratory, descriptive and qualitative, and diagnose the coherence of the Strategy Map in an organization, based strategic planning from 2010 to 2012. Initially conducted a literature review covering the main aspects of strategy maps and performance evaluation involving the translation of the BSC and strategy evaluation. The main results of the proposed approach refers to evaluation of overall scores for each dimension of the BSC methodology, financial, customer, internal processes, learning and growth. These results are able to help the organization evaluate and revise their strategy and, in general, to adopt management methods more accurately. Data collection is centered on interviews with semi-structured questionnaire. The findings highlight on balancing and alignment of strategic objectives, low causality map, strategic communication insufficient and fragmented. For interviewees organizational culture is the biggest impediment to structuring a management model based on indicators and strategic process should be initiated by non-financial indicators gradually. The performance indicators of the AACC/RN portray more meritocracy operational procedures of social projects in the context of the Strategic Map determined in a shortterm over the long term. However, there is evidence of improved performance management and strategic taken as a basis of planning as both the strategic map structured. Therefore, the nonprofits need to adopt a form of management that enables planning, setting objectives and targets that provide the continuity of its activities, and generating instruments that can measure the financial performance and non-financial, in order to develop strategic actions for growth and sustainability

In the present time, public organizations are employing more and more solutions that uses information technology in order to ofer more transparency and better services for all citizens. Integrated Systems are IT which carry in their kernel features of integration and the use of a unique database. These systems bring several benefits and face some obstacles that make their adoption difficult. The conversion to a integrated system may take years and, thus, the study of the adoption of this IT in public sector organizations become very stimulant due to some peculiarities of this sector and the features of this technology. First of all, information about the particular integrated system in study and about its process of conversion are offered. Then, the researcher designs the configuration of the conversion process aim of this study the agents envolved and the moments and the tools used to support the process in order to elaborate the methodology of the conversion process understood as the set of procedures and tools used during all the conversion process. After this, the researcher points out, together with all the members of the conversion team, the negative and positive factors during the project. Finally, these factors were analysed through the Hospitality Theory lens which, in the researcher opinion, was very useful to understand the elements, events and moments that interfered in the project. The results consolidated empirically the Hospitality Theory presumptions, showing yet a limitation of this theory in the case in study

The ability to create alternatives to social problems in a sustainable way can be understood as Social Innovation. Social Innovation is a way of equalizing social problems, as it is considered an option for market failures, the State and society. Thus, Social Innovation presents itself as a possible and necessary alternative for the solution of the problems related to Sustainable Development, especially education. This research aims, from the perspective of the Innovation Capability, to study the capabilities of Social Innovation in Associations, Business Foundations and Social Business that work in the area of education in the Southeast of Brazil. In this study, the Social Innovation Capability is analyzed from five factors: Facilitating Leadership; Intention to Innovate Socially; Democratic Management; Co-creation of Social Innovation and; Open Social Innovation. Therefore, this study adopts the methodology of descriptive nature. For the data collection, online questionnaires were sent to a selection of organizations belonging to the three types of organizations studied (Associations, Business Foundations and Social Business) that work in the area of education in Southeast Brazil. The answers of the eight organizations, each with three respondents were analyzed from the literature. The research sample is made up of three Associations, two Business Foundations and three Social Business, which are active in the area of education in Southeastern Brazil. The results indicate that Associations, Business Foundations and Social Affairs agree on the importance of the factors Democratic Management and Open Social Innovation for Social Innovation. However, the Co-creation factor for Social Innovation presented low agreement for Social Innovation. In organizations with an economic purpose, the factors of Social Innovation Capability are more expressive when compared with organizations with social purpose.

Abstract:
Since the advent of the new democratic order established under the 1996 Constitution, South Africa has been plagued with many new challenges .One of the facts that our new democratic state could not ignore was the rapid increase in both national and international, organized criminal activity .The South African Legislature realizing the desire to combat serious criminal activities, introduced into South African Law, the Prevention of Organized Crime Act 121 of 1998. The Act recognizes that conventional criminal penalties are inadequate as measures of deterrence when organized crime leaders are able to retain the considerable gains derived from organized crime, even on those occasions when they are brought to justice. It strives to strip sophisticated criminals of the proceeds of their criminal conduct. The Courts, in applying this legislation, has also created a new field of law that had until the advent of the Act, not existed in South African Law, namely organized crime law. A field, distinct from the ordinary principles of criminal law. The bulk of jurisprudence created over the past decade or more, however seems to be threatened to be undone by the recent judgment concerning the constitutionality of certain provisions of the Act. The confirmation of this judgment is being considered by the Constitutional Court and the purpose of this thesis is to argue against the confirmation of this judgment

Abstract:
This master thesis aims to unveil and examine the interplay between different actors in the fight against human trafficking. These are: the European Union, the Czech Republic and Belgium. A content (text) analysis of the primary sources gives the answers on how those actors work with the definition of human trafficking and to what extent the two member states implemented the EU Directive 2011/36/EU and other documents. In addition to conducting the content (text) analysis, creating a literature review and researching on different discourses linked to this phenomenon, this thesis include two semi-structured interviews with the representatives of the Czech Republic and Belgium. Those offer deeper insight into how those states form this fight in practice. They unveiled different aspects in their own approaches but also aspects that make their approach unique. This thesis examines also how the new strategy - the most important document framing the fight against human trafficking and the country's priorities - is adopted and what generally will those strategies include from the year 2020.
