Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to examine the effect of job motivation and commitment on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) of Indonesian and Malaysian employees. Organizational and national cultures are introduced as moderators and OCB as a mediator to investigate their relationships in the context of job performance. Design/methodology/approach The sample was drawn from employees using a purposive sampling method. A total of 264 valid questionnaires were obtained from employees. The data were analyzed using regression analysis. Findings The results show that job commitment and job motivation positively affect OCB in Indonesia but not Malaysia. The results also reveal that job motivation affects OCB in both countries. In Indonesia, organizational culture and national culture partially moderate the influence of job commitment and motivation on OCB, except the commitment to the organization's culture. However, roles of these moderators in job commitment and motivation are not evident in Malaysia. The result of this study also shows that OCB affects performance in Malaysia but not Indonesia. Practical implications The results of this study can be used to explore Indonesian and Malaysian employees. Although the culture of these two countries is originated from the same roots which cause many similarities among them, there are differences in terms of OCB and employee’s performance that can affect organizational performance and also ways in dealing business with Indonesian and Malaysian companies. Originality/value This study is one of the first studies to examine cross-cultural dimensions in two Southeast Asian countries. The findings contribute to the current OCB literature by confirming the roles of OCB and culture in the effects of job motivation and commitment on job performance.

Abstract:
There are many studies that focused on the role of organizational commitment on Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) specifically conducted in Indonesia. However, few of studies emphasize on the role of three conceptual constructs of organizational commitment namely affective, normative, and continuance on OCB in Indonesian context. Several empirical studies still remain inconclusive due to the inconsistency results. This research is intended as an empirical test to examine the role of three conceptual dimensions of commitment on OCB, and also tested to add body of knowledge about the results of this empirical study in Indonesia especially in hospitality industry. This is a quantitative causal research with 73 three-starred hotels’ employees as the respondents. The data is processed using SmartPLS 2.0 as the statistical tools, and as the result it is found that affective commitment affects positively and significantly toward OCB; normative commitment affects positively and significantly toward OCB; and lastly continuance commitment affects positively and significantly toward OCB.

Abstract:
In my study, I examine the relationship between founding family ownership and firm performance. Using publicly listed companies in Indonesia, I observe families are much more prevalent than in the US; in my sample, families are present in over 60% of Indonesian listed companies and families own an average outstanding equity of 50.4%. Contrary to previous literatures, I present new evidence to show founding family ownership and control is a more efficient form of ownership structure only when the family is a majority-shareholder in the company. Additional investigations shows that founding family ownership has a U-shaped quadratic relationship with firm performance, indicating that an increase in family ownership is initially associated with worsening firm performances, but is then associated with improving firm performances after passing a certain level of equity ownership.

Abstract:
Knowledge Management System (KMS) is a necessary concept as knowledge possessed by each individual employee is an intellectual property asset that will provide benefits for any organization. In a company, in terms of KMS, employees’ performance holds an important role in helping run the business of the company becoming sustainable and successful. Therefore, the measurement of employees’ performance based on a balanced scorecard is needed to understand the current business situation. This research helped focus on the perception between the KMS and employee’s performance based on a balanced scorecard (BSC) regarding a financial perspective, customer perspective, internal business process perspective, and learning & growth perspective. A survey was conducted at PT. Vale Indonesia Tbk (Vale) to ascertain these perspectives and perceptions of employees regarding performance based on a BSC. These perception data were analyzed, and conclusions were drawn regarding hypotheses. The findings section of this thesis shows the results in details. The results of the survey showed that the employees had a good perception of the value and benefits of KMS as measured with the BSC with the exception of the financial aspect. The interpretation of the results created recommendations to further implement KMS, and to improve employees’ performance at Vale.

Rahajeng, Dian Kartika. "Stakeholders' perceptions of fraud in Indonesian BMT Islamic cooperatives." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23242/.

Full text
Abstract:
Indonesia’s Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (known as BMT Islamic cooperatives; henceforth BMTs), are an important phenomenon in Indonesia due to their rapid growth (i.e. numbers, assets, members) and spread across the nation. BMTs are seen as organisations that fill a gap in the market by catering for small-micro-sized enterprises (SMEs) by which because of their size find it difficult to obtain access to the usual financial intermediaries such as banks. BMTs also have an important social role of contributing to poverty alleviation, since SMEs are perceived as vehicles through which wealth and prosperity can be improved. However, in contrast to what we would expect from organisations espousing Islamic values, in recent years there have been a number of frauds involving BMTs which both socially and economically has had a detrimental effect on society. This contradiction merits examination. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine stakeholders’ perceptions of fraud in BMTs. The research is comprised of three main stages: a critical literature review, an archival media analysis, and semi-structured interviews; followed by an analysis of the findings using stakeholder theory as an analytical tool. The literature is explored on three main issues: corporate governance, non-traditional organisation, and fraud. This research utilises the narrative case study method and content analysis. The narrative case study is adopted to gain in-depth understanding of fraud problems such as rigorous examination of stakeholders (i.e. managers, members, employees, authorities, society). This study finds that the fraud incidents in BMTs as a systematic failure as all stakeholder groups have their responsibilities on these failures. There are overlapping values between micro (individual) values and macro values (especially Islamic and cultural values) which enabled fraud to occur. This study contributes to the theory and literature by emphasises the importance of cultural and religious aspects to the analysis of corporate governance theories. This study also contributes to the practice of BMTs and mutuals by provide relevant insights and guidelines to policymakers and practitioners for the future development of BMT governance in Indonesia, particularly the fraud prevention strategies.

ABSTRACT The current tendency of researchers in organization behavior literature starting to give more attention to psychological factors holds its own attraction. For years, emotional and psychology issues were put aside in organization behavior’s literatures. However, due to the extremely turbulent in today’s organizational environmental, emotional and psychology issues need to recognized and understood as a vital part of human resources department. Also, the authors examined the effect of demographic characteristics towards those four constructs. The total sample of this study is 280 respondents. This study found that among demographic characteristics, gender has no relationship with the four construct in this study. Among the four constructs, job satisfaction did not have significant relationship with demographic characteristic. Employees who are married have higher recognition toward distribution justice compared to those who are single. Furthermore, employees who are aging between 36-40 years old have higher recognition toward continuance commitment and distribution justice. While the higher the education of the employee would produce higher recognition towards optimism, resilience, and procedural justice. Employees who are working at private sector and NGO have higher recognition level towards procedural and hope, compared to those who are working at public sector. This study also found there is existed relationship between four constructs in one degree or another. Among the dimensions of organizational justice, information and procedural have relationship with organizational commitment and job satisfaction. While for positive organizational behavior, resilience and optimism was found to have relationship with organizational commitment and hope and resilience have relationship with job satisfaction. Iswahyudi, Muhammad Subhan. "The influence of supervisors' ethical leadership on key account managers' ethicality, ethical conduct, and customer relationship quality: a mixed-method study in the Indonesian information and communication technology (ICT) industry." Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/38666/.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the challenges to ethical practices in a business to business marketing context, this study examines the influence of supervisors’ ethical leadership on key account managers. A mixed-method approach was used to answer research questions about the role of ethical leadership to shape account managers’ ethicality, ethical conduct and customer relationship quality. The study included a qualitative phase to confirm the constructs followed by a quantitative study to test theory-driven hypotheses. The initial exploratory phase interviewed a sample 18 participants, which comprised supervisors, account manager, and customers of an Indonesian information and communication technology firm. Analyses surfaced common themes which informed the concept of ethical key account management. An online survey with two stages of data collection followed, which used both quantitative measures and open-ended qualitative responses. In stage 1, partial least-squares structural equation modelling of responses from 258 account managers revealed that supervisors’ ethical leadership was positively related to account managers’ ethical awareness, intention, and judgment contingent on the ethical dilemma involved. Further analyses of the 73 completed responses of the survey in stage 2 indicated that ethical leadership was positively related to ethical equity judgment and customer-oriented organisational citizenship behaviour, and had an indirect positive effect on customer relationship quality. Theoretically, the study contributes new understanding by extending the model of ethical leadership outcomes to customers as the main organisational stakeholders. In practice, the study has the potential to inform strategies for improving the moral engagement of key account managers. This engagement is essential for guiding standards of customer relationship management. In sum, supervisors who engage in moral behaviour and provoke their subordinates to do so by role-modelling, communication and providing rewards and consequences, are likely to influence followers’ citizenship behaviour and discourage the deviant behaviour.

Abstract:
This article addresses a research lacuna in the literature with regard to determinants of attitudes and adoption of an innovation (Facebook) in the SMEs sector in emerging economies with particular reference to Indonesia. To this end, five support dimensions: government support, management support, motivational support, technological support and training support were developed basing on existing literature and the established theories in the relevant field. The impact of these support dimensions on managerial attitudes and adoption of innovation were then examined in an organizational setting. Data was collected from a sample of senior managers representing Indonesian SMEs through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using multivariate statistical tools, such as multiple regression analysis. The research revealed significant effects of government support, management support, technological support and training support dimensions on the managerial perception of innovation and direct effects of management and training support on the adoption of innovation. Interestingly, government support dimensions have significant impacted the commitment of SMEs to innovation but not on the adoption behavior of innovation, suggesting that governments' main role would be to ensure commitment of SMEs. This is because commitment is a crucial precondition of adoption behavior. Furthermore, managers' physical maturity (age) was found to moderate the relationship between government support and the perception of innovation. The implications of these interesting findings for SMEs and for the governments in emerging economies to designing an appropriate strategy for effective implementation of social media as an innovation are highlighted in this article.

Abstract:
The government of Indonesia has launched environmental policies to address the risks of climate change at the national to local levels and involves all elements of development: economy and business, education, environment and forestry, and transportation. In fact, behavioral change is seen as unsustainable, particularly in people's everyday lives. As this problem emerges, Indonesian young people through youth-led environmental organizations hold environmental activities to alternatively introduce and educate communities and schools to recognize and identity climate change impacts. The author then presents two successful youth organizations: Greenpeace Youth Indonesia (GYI) and the Indonesian Students Climate Forum (ICSF). GYI's actions are more stirred with Greenpeace's ideology, which focuses on direct campaigns, protest, and young activist mobilization, while ICSF's repertoires for mitigating climate changes are more community schools-based educational outreach. Although both of them are distinct in nature, their works have been transformative and applicable.

Holland, Jeremy. Creating Spaces to Take Action on Violence Against Women and Girls in the Philippines: Integrated Impact Evaluation Report. Oxfam GB, November 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21201/2022.9899.

Full text
Abstract:
The Creating Spaces project was a five-year, multi-country initiative aimed at reducing violence against women and girls and the prevalence of child, early and forced marriage in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan and the Philippines. This evaluation focuses on tackling social norm change in the Muslim Mindanao region of the Philippines, working closely with the organizations AMWA, UnyPhil, PBSP and PLCPD. It found that strategies were effectively combined at community level to begin to shift local behaviours, while local change processes were linked to higher-level advocacy for progressive legislative and policy change at national and regional levels. Creating Spaces has successfully started to move the dial, proving change is possible with concerted, strategic and sustained effort. This evaluation provides key recommendations to guide future interventions to build on these successes, and create the basis for future social transformation around violence against women and girls and child, early and forced marriage. Facts about adolescents from the Demographic and Health Survey—Statistical tables for program planning: Indonesia 1997. Population Council, 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/pgy21.1017.

Full text
Abstract:
The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. In working with colleagues inside and outside the Council, it became clear that information on adolescents, and the way data are organized, were limiting the ability to understand the diversity of their experiences or to develop programs to address that diversity. In the absence of data, many adolescent policies were implicitly based on the premise that the lives of adolescents in developing countries were like those of adolescents in Western countries. In fact, significant numbers of young people in the West do not fit this description, and even larger groups within the developing countries. The Council created tables to more clearly describe the diversity of the adolescent experience by drawing on Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey data. The tables, presented in this report, are intended to be used as a basis for developing programs.
