Abstract:
This thesis explores how Swedish farmers, who have chosen to farm with heritage plant varieties, motivate their choices and how they as a result of their choices view themselves as farmers. This is investigated against present and future challenges regarding food security and the loss of agricultural biodiversity and biocultural heritage, which, in order to be faced, will require a wider range of plants in cultivation. To find out why farmers make certain choices is vital if we are to make necessary structural changes within the agricultural sector. The farmers’ motives are broad and they are, based on the concept of hybridity, presented and analysed through the categories memory, identity and reciprocity. These motives are also closely linked to how they view themselves as farmers. The findings are further interpreted through the concept of biocultural refugia, which is a means of studying how certain places can harbour different species while simultaneously being an area for sustainable food production. In this thesis biocultural refugia represents how the respondents are part of creating and maintaining diversity within plant cultivation and its surrounding practices. This diversity will be required in order for agriculture to handle current challenges in a sustainable way.

Walker, Carole A. "Caroline Chisholm, 1808-1877: ordinary woman - extraordinary life, impossible category." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2001. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8035.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to look at the motivations behind the life and work of Caroline Chisholm, nee Jones, 1808-1877, and to ascertain why British historians have chosen to ignore her contribution to the nineteenth century emigration movement, while attending closely to such women as Nightingale for example. The Introduction to the thesis discusses the difficulties of writing a biography of a nineteenth century woman, who lived at the threshold of modernity, from the perspective of the twenty-first century, in the period identified as late modernity or postmodernity. The critical issues of writing a historical biography are explored. Chapter Two continues the debate in relation to the Sources, Methods and Problems that have been met with in writing the thesis. Chapters Three to Seven consider Chisholm's life and work in the more conventional narrative format, detailing where new evidence has been found. By showing where misinformation and errors have arisen in earlier biographies that have been perpetuated by subsequent biographies, they give specificity to the debate discussed in the Introduction. Chapters Eight to Ten discuss, in far greater depth than a conventional narrative format allows, the relevant political, religious and social influences which shaped and influenced Chisholm's life, and which facilitate an understanding of her motivation and character.

Coelho, Adriane Rodrigues. "Ordinary accounts of extraordinary value :: mormon pioneer women's life writings." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/ALDR-6QWPHJ.

Abstract:
Considering personal literature as a distinct literary genre that reveals and preserves their authors' identity and voice, and that demands its own parameters for literary analysis, this study investigates two nineteenth century Mormon women's life writings: Mary Jane Mount Tanner's journals and Patience Loader Rozsa Archer's autobiography, taking into account their value as historical documents, which not only demonstrate an effective way to access the past, but also have already proven to be fundamental for the reconstruction of the Mormon experience and preservation and conveyance of its group identity and collective memory. Attempting at understanding how literature, history and memory merge, this study presentes the development of the comprehension of memory as a social phenomenon and summarizes the contributions of important thinkers like Halbwachs, Le Goff, Connerton and Hobsbawn. It also provides an outline of the history of the United States in the nineteenth century to contextualize the historical and social frames in which those texts are inserted.

This doctoral thesis presents a study on the acclamation of ordinary subjects in the contemporary context. Within the scope of advertising and consumption practices, this acclamation is the starting point for different processes of construction and affirmation of one’s identity, lifestyle, visibility, authenticity performance, as well as recognition and prestige dynamics, all related to Communication aspects. Hence, we herein investigate brand strategies that are geared towards promoting partnerships between brands and influencers, especially those labeled brand ambassadors. Brands establish an affiliation with these subjects that, albeit ordinary, have the significant power to influence others in their group. In doing so, brands create a type of hybrid message that expands in size and exposure (mainly on social media) when it is reflected on self-narratives constructed—we hope—in an authentic manner by the consumer in potential, key element in the process. Thus, the main objective of this study is to understand who are these ordinary subjects who lend their lives, even their own identity, to a brand, how they define themselves and what they represent to others. We support the idea of these individuals as paradoxical nature emblematic characters who can be perceived as ordinary-extraordinary, since what makes them remarkable is precisely being ordinary. Influencers can also be perceived in light of the pair representation-media, because they represent familiarity and anchorage of an accessible identity and a distinctive lifestyle, interesting to those who follow them, and interesting to the brand itself for the possibility of message enunciations and the establishment of a bond with other consumers. In this context, authenticity is an important asset, being assured and managed through dual-quality selfperformance, though extremely imbricated in the subjective scope and in the influencer role. The analysis of the phenomenon from an empirical object (the observed projects, for instance), and in-depth interviews with brand ambassadors allow us to infer that advertising and consumption practices have a special contribution on these ordinary-extraordinary subjects conformation process, assuring them distinction and notoriety. In addition, it is possible to identify the reflexive self-presentation to others on digital network, on conversations, on the streets, and the many possibilities of technology tools, resulting in the (expected) recognition and prestige that legitimize these subjects. Finally, this study aims to contribute with considerations on themes regarding the phenomenon, such as: advertising models suitable for participatory culture, in which ordinary subjects gain great relevance; consumption practices and ways to establish symbolic exchanges in contemporaneity; communication and identity-building processes that underlie self-exposure practices, management of impressions, negotiations and articulations of different purposes.

Abstract:
This thesis entails an ethnographic exploration of the Greek economic crisis. In particular, I address the signification, materialisation, and contestation of the Greek economic crisis in a soup kitchen, a clothing bank, and a social clinic. Drawing from material gathered in the Northern Greek town of Xanthi between March 2014 and 2015, I treat alternative provisioning as an avenue to mutuality, collectivity, and egalitarianism. Moreover, I posit that the discrepancies between idealised discourses and everyday practices of provisioning offer privileged insights into perceptions and experiences of profound social transformation. Through detailed analysis of local media representations and interview transcriptions, I argue that idealised articulations of collective action and social assistance coalesced in the figure of the 'volunteer'. The subjectivity of the volunteer was defined by free will, autonomy, agentive interiority, and magnanimous intentionality. The efforts of the volunteer were framed in terms of civic consciousness and disinterested altruism. In sharp contrast to the idealised figure of the 'volunteer' however, the volunteering 'selves' that operated the soup kitchen, the clothing bank and the social clinic were enmeshed in conventions, obligations and reciprocities. I address these through thorough ethnographic attention to material gathered from participant observation. In particular, I trace the performative relocation of domesticity in the soup kitchen and argue that its cooks transformed into symbolic mothers. I consider the cooks' quests for symbolic and material remuneration, and posit that the framing devices of employment served to reconcile the domains of waged labour and reproduction. I follow the market conventions that guided the clothing bank, and suggest that its volunteering attendants engaged in performative shopkeeping. Finally, I describe the bureaucratic surveillance that operated against the uninsured patients of the social clinic, and argue that its volunteering authorities practiced 'stateness'. These insights were yielded at a time when the agonistic discourses and practices of horizontality, counter-hegemony and solidarity enjoyed unprecedented national prominence. Yet, rather than striving for an alternative society, my own informants appeared determined to restore and perform the rapidly dismantling provisioning routes of the past. Thus, the soup kitchen, clothing bank and social clinic served to reproduce the ordering and provisioning frames of household, market and state. Courtesy of its extraordinary background, this performative normality was bound to be a precarious and incomplete response to the workings of rupture. Hence, the crisis was revealed as a composite site of extraordinary continuity and ordinary rupture. Departing from the 'methodological exceptionalism' that often guides studies of crisis and social transformation, this thesis hopes to illustrate that performances of order and continuity serve as important loci of both resilience and convention, as well as change and invention.

Abstract:
Studies on education evolve closely along the debates of social reproduction and students’ actual responses in the process of schooling. Structural influences of class, gender, race or ethnicity are often highlighted and resulted in more or less coherent and consistent student subcultures and typologies. The aim of this study is to capture and explain the neglected complexities and dynamics of schooling by studying a group of ordinary students in a community college in Hong Kong. Ordinary students are under-studied because of their assumed normality and uninteresting experience. By stepping into their world of everyday schooling using an ethnographic approach, it is found that their hopes in life are ordinary but their lives extraordinary with selectivity, inconsistency and transiency as the defining features. Such features result from the everyday interplay of school routines, connections with people, ethics of conduct, as well as visions in life of these students. These interactions shape a certain narrative of life over time and are deployed as cultural tools in particular situations of schooling. The deployment of cultural tools by ordinary students allows an understanding of culture in action although it is fragmented and incoherent, and the lives of them as a whole are characterised by drifting across states of being, rather than formation of any coherent, linear or cumulative narrative. The study contributes to existing scholarship by offering new empirical observations on how thirty two community college students went through and reflected on their schooling experience over a two year span. The study adds to the ongoing theoretical attempt to grasp the complex interaction among structure, institution and agency in social life by capturing the fluid states of drift in ethics and visions among students amidst the highly structured routines of competitive education. Through these we are able to better understand the lives and cultures of ordinary students in a world where to be ordinary is almost like an impossible dream.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis tells the stories of five Oregon women who transcended the customary roles of their era. Active during the waning years of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, each woman made a difference in the world around them. Their stories have either not been told or just given a passing glance. These tales are important because they inform us about our society on the cusp of the twentieth century. Hattie Crawford Redmond was the daughter of a freed slave who devoted herself to the fight for women's suffrage. Minnie Mossman Hill was the first woman steamboat pilot west of the Mississippi. Mary Francis Isom was a local librarian who went to France to deliver books to American soldiers. Ann and May Shogren were sisters who brought high fashion to Portland and defied the gender and social rules in both their business and personal lives. These women were not the only ones who accomplished extraordinary things during their lives. They are a tiny sample of Oregon women who pushed beyond discrimination, hardship and gender limits to earn their place in Oregon's history.

Plonski, Sharri. "Ordinary & extraordinary resistances : the struggle for land and space by the Palestinian citizens of Israel." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2015. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/20385/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the dialectic relationship between 'power' and 'resistance' through the lens of the struggle for land and space, by the Palestinian citizens of Israel. Ever in contention, ever in conversation, dynamics of power and resistance dislodge, dislocate and displace one another, transformed through their intersections and interactions. Thus to understand Palestinian-citizen struggle is to see it in dialogue with the trajectories of the Israeli hegemonic order: in which the indigenous Palestinian is always othered, outside and absent; a threat to be removed and replaced, despite (or even because of) their inclusion in the political and spatial organisations of the state. There is no room for the indigenous Palestinian within the state's dual rationales of ethnic-nationalism and settler-colonialism. And yet, there is a never-ending encounter between the Zionist state and subaltern Palestinian-citizen, essential to the shape and journey of both. This encounter produces the particular story, the particular space, in which both are housed, the lines and boundaries of which are articulated and disrupted through unique spatial and social relations. The analysis stems from a three year exploration of three cases of community land-struggles: a popular movement for housing rights in Palestinian neighbourhoods of Jaffa-Tel Aviv; an enduring protest-movement against the Judaization project in the Galilee region; and the existential struggle for land rights of Bedouin communities in the Naqab desert. Their stories are a window into the unique reverberations of Zionist hegemony as it clashes with a real, contextualised, material history; with a Palestinian community surviving, resisting, antagonising and engaging the structures of power. Through investigating their moments of containment, contention and transgression, we unravel how resistance is entangled with the structures of power; and how the lines that determine this relationship are challenged, unveiled and disarticulated, and even transcended and transformed.

Abstract:
Experiential marketing is built around a promise: to be able to create and offer its customers extraordinary experiences. This theoretical framework, which is over thirty years old, is part of a traditional vision of marketing; the company must create value for its customers and in the experiential paradigm, this creation involves the setting up of an experiential context aiming at re-enchanting the consumption. This observation has raised several questions for the author: on the one hand can the company create experiments? and on the other hand what do we mean by "re-enchantment"? These are the questions that nourished the initial reflection of this thesis. This reflection led to the formulation of a problem and research questions around the ordinary experience lived by the consumer. In marketing several authors have identified the main aspects that emerge from the ordinary experiences of consumers. Nevertheless, this research does not capture what they represent from the point of view of the consumer. However, from a managerial perspective, identifying the "ordinary" from the consumer's point of view will enable companies to understand where the value they perceive from the experience they have described as ordinary is. Thus, this would allow companies to set up measures devices to improve the ordinary of their customers through the implementation of a daily marketing. Thanks to a qualitative methodology (interviews and photo-analysis), this research examines the understanding of consumers' experiences through experiences they describe as ordinary. With the help of scientific works and the original contribution of literature that this thesis provides an analysis of this ordinary universe through consumption. Searching what constitutes this type of experience makes it possible to interpretative framework which will help understand the meaning that consumers attach to it

Abstract:
This critical commentary reviews and contextualises existing research on Photographic strategies for visualising the landscape and natural history of Northern England: the ordinary and the extraordinary. The commentary examines three major bodies of photographic work that have each been publicly disseminated as major exhibitions, Sharpe’s Wood (2007) nominated for the Prix Pictet (Earth) Photography Award (2009), Chasing the Gloaming (2011) nominated for the Deutsche Börse and Re: Collections (2013). Each case study has been subject to critical peer and public review and this is evaluated in the commentary and a comprehensive box of evidential research material is presented to support the practice-led research submission. The commentary positions the practice-led enquiry against the overall research aims and objectives. The research focus has made a significant contribution to landscape photographic discourse, through experimental and transformational analogue and digital photographic methodologies (camera and non-camera) in the visualisation of the hidden and unseen aspects of the landscape and natural history of the north of England. The commentary frames and highlights the wide-ranging historical collections based research across photographic, artistic and science disciplines, and it tracks their impact on the research trajectory and on my contemporary photographic practice. Photographic critical thinking (Walter Benjamin and Roland Barthes) supported the theoretical research aims; their ideas provided critical filters for practice-led experiments with camera and non-camera seeing and the aim of visualising the hidden through experimental photographic methodologies. Historical and contemporary nature writing also informed the photographic research trajectory, specifically with ideas around the locale within a wider cultural context and ideas around the (lost) meaning of landscape. The resulting research outputs have culminated in an examination of the wider cultural value of the ordinary and the local landscape visualised photographically.

Abstract:
Every summer, Lily Dale, New York, a community founded on spiritualist beliefs and steeped in an eccentric explosive past, hosts thousands of visitors seeking to communicate with dead friends and relatives, while the residents lead ordinary lives in the midst of the supernatural hype permeating their town. Their stories are considered by most to be secondary to the illustrious trappings of the community in which they occurred. My research employs oral histories prompted by personal photographs to showcase the residents' everyday experiences amidst the town's infamy, illuminating the undervalued individual experience of those living in communities of such extraordinary repute. The attitudes of the residents displayed when sharing their memories is contextualized in the material behavior exhibited historically in the Spiritualist religion, spirit photography, and the formative years of Lily Dale's growth from a summer camp in the late 1800s to a town of permanent yearlong residents practicing unorthodox beliefs. Through the residents' sharing of images and memories, they reveal that their "ordinary" lives include a deep-rooted understanding of the Spiritualist lifestyle by unconsciously weaving spirit encounters and metaphysical events in and out of their conversation without making distinctions that they are in any way unusual. Spirit is not only in the air in Lily Dale--to the residents it is the air.

Abstract:
An enduring issue in Christian bioethics is locating respect for human life between two extremes: an absolute valuation and a valuation entirely conditional on life's quality. This issue finds expression in the use of the ordinary-extraordinary means distinction (OEMD), a burden-benefit calculus employed by Catholic and Protestant ethicists to judge the appropriateness of available life preserving means in particular cases. With the increasing accessibility of new technologies and procedures for extending life, unique threats to the usefulness of the OEMD are posed. In particular, humans have the novel capacity to stabilize and sustain life indefinitely in grave and unprecedented conditions. Disagreements result within and between Christian communities over how far the possibilities for preserving life should be taken. The advent of the persistent vegetative state (PVS) has caused such a disagreement.
In examining the practical problem and its particular manifestation in the PVS, it is argued that reasonable measures for preserving human life are properly determined first of all in light of what is beneficial for the human being. Establishing what constitutes human benefit in the medical arena requires a philosophy of medicine reliant upon a substantive concept of the human being. A theological anthropology foundational for the OEMD and the ends of medicine is uncovered, underscoring the tension between given human ontological value and the possible realization of human ends without digressing into dualism.
This anthropology also attends to the undue influence of technology in the present day. Protecting the efficacy of the OEMD and remaining consistent with its underlying anthropology require that new technological means of preserving life not be assumed to provide benefit prior to a moral examination of such means undertaken in the practical context. Moral obligation must not be allowed to expand in direct proportion to growing technological capacities to preserve life. Rather, medicine is best understood as a species of care. As a specialized type of care, it remains subject to the ends of nonspecialized care. A proper application of the OEMD today reveals that medical means are not the only (or even always the most appropriate) way to care for the perishing human body.

Abstract:
Improved medical and nursing care means that the numbers of children who are ‘technology dependent’ (TD) with complex continuing health care needs are expected to continue to increase over the coming years. As a result, a group of children who are dependent on medical technology are now being cared for by their parents at home. The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the daily lives of parents who cared for their child who was ‘technology dependent’ with complex continuing health care needs at home. The method selected to meet the aim and objectives of this study was hermeneutic phenomenology. Sixteen parents, thirteen mothers and three fathers, who were caring for their child who was TD at home, were interviewed and six of these parents also recorded a solicited audio diary. The overarching pattern of experience that emerged from parents in this study was described as living between the extraordinary and the ordinary. Parents lived experiences were further revealed through three sub-themes; a caregiving journey suspended in time, authenticities of parenting and technological caregiving and moving forward with their lives. Interpreting the meanings that parents gave to their day to day lives revealed a dichotomy of experiences. In essence this group of parents lived with the constant, relentless demands and responsibility of meeting the care needs of their child every day at home. As parents and caregivers they became absorbed in the everydayness of living, they experienced the recurring highs and lows of being a parent and caregiver to their child yet sought to make the most of each day with their child at home. Their child’s technology dependence was both a restrictive and transformative experience and parents took on the role of 'techno-expert’ caregiver in addition to their other roles and responsibilities.

Abstract:
Over the course of Northern Ireland's recent political conflict, categorised as 'The Troubles', a number of research studies into the involvement of former paramilitaries have been conducted. For example, various studies have focused on the reintegration of former paramilitaries back into their communities, while others focused on the involvement of former paramilitaries in conflict resolution and DOW former paramilitaries are dealing with the past. However, to this date, none have explored in any detail the situational forces and systemic influences that contributed to the transformation of ordinary young men into paramilitary killers. This six year, Ph. D. study seeks to fill this void by investigating what led ordinary young men to join paramilitary groups and perpetrate violence. Throughout this thesis, I will persistently repeat that seeking to understand such situational and systemic influences, on the participants in this investigation, is not an attempt to excuse them from, or absolve them of, their actions. This sociological study examines the biographical narratives of former Loyalist paramilitaries from inner city Belfast. The individuals under investigation are former political prisoners who were members of the paramilitary group known as the Ulster Volunteer Force, (UVF) or its associated groups namely the Young Citizen Volunteers, (YCV) and Red Hand Commando (RHC). Fourteen narratives have been captured using the method known as the Biographical Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) containing the personal accounts of the respondents. Two of the fourteen narratives are presented as case studies and are the main focus of the thesis. These oral histories offer a perspective on the past now which the narrators did not have at the time but which has emerged in the reflection on and telling of their stories. The additional twelve narratives are considered satellite cases from which material is used in support or otherwise of the two case studies. The retrospective period being investigated is from their earliest memories until their time of arrest. The specific relevance of this study is that it focuses on the situational factors which are influential in seeking to understand why ordinary young men, some of whom were still at school, engaged in the conflict at its most violent period, (1972-1975), and became killers. In addition, it aims to contribute an additional perspective to the body of literature on paramilitarism in Northern Ireland. The study is borne out of the personal experience of being a former political prisoner myself and has emerged out of consistent contact with former political prisoners over the past twenty years, during the course of my community development practice.

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the impact of courts tax practice on the procedure of tax audit in Czech Republic. The main purpose of the thesis was to evaluate the impact of tax judicature on the process of tax audit including the successive acts. Furthermore, the thesis should evaluate the view on tax administration of tax audit procedure reflecting the changes in judicature. The interpretation given by the judicature should be helping by illustration of the tax audit particular phases. Moreover, it should guarantee adequate level of peace to the tax subjects and tax administrators as well during this procedure. In the second part of the thesis, the particular phases of tax audit procedure were evaluated from the perspective of the tax code. This will be effective after January 1st 2011. In the course of the analysis it was shown the currently effective tax code is no more sufficient code of tax administration. It includes lots of deficits affecting the tax audit procedure. The courts tax practice covered these shortages greatly indeed. It also helped for better understanding of the current tax code tax audit paragraphs. Anyway, from the point of view of the controversy between two Czech main courts - the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Administrative Court - the absolute peace during the tax audit procedure is not achievable. From all these facts, as well as from the difficultness of following all the actual judicature concerned, I concluded, the function of the new tax code is unavoidable.

Abstract:
The gothic Venice Ducal Palace was realized for 1340 but all the last centuries of Middle Ages long and for whole Renaissance, works have gone ahead seamless. Around 1625, the building reach its actual design and till this moment, only restoration works have been realized. This PhD tesis in architecture history studies the conclusive moment of this building process in order to understand why and how for 1595 so big a building site achieves. Financing dynamics of public works in Venice are first of all inserted within a long term analysis from the amortization of public debt between Middle Ages and Modern times. Such a study consent to pass in review thanks to available publications the main steps of the Ducal Palace building and to advocate a financial study of some of the major public buildings in Venice late XVIth century such as Rialto bridge or Redentore church. This study on the institutional functions of the Salt Office is in a second moment addressed to a specific political moment for the Venice Republic, the Interdetto crisis. A series of biographic researches about public and private commissions of several doges on power from 1595 to 1625 is developed, focusing on the respective leaders from the pro papalist vecchi and their opponents, the giovani patricians, Marino Grimani and Leonardo Donà. Specific research on public records and family archives are also dedicated to the exceptional journey from Padua to Paris of Antonio Priuli. Indeed, as Surveyor from all the Ducal palace places, he is responsible for the transformation of this building between 1601 and 1614. Then, he relaunches the works when arriving on power from 1618 till his death in 1624. During all this time long, the carpenter Bartolomeo Manopola conducts the works as Salt office proto. A detailed study is realized on his family building firm associating stone carvers, carpenters and masons. The relationships between public building and important figures from the time such as the stone carver Giovanni Grapiglia, the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi and the art seller Daniel Nijs are also developed associating a study on the commissioners network, architecture details and building site accounts. Such a micro-historic approach from the productive structure of the building site is the base for an analysis from the superstructure, ie for a survey on the Ducal palace architecture transformations from 1595 to 1625.Internal conflicts enable an interpretation of the functional program for the room gradually arranged on the ground floor on the building and inside the lodges. The powers representations shaped on on the clock facade and inside the new banqueting room are then analyzed through a political length, considering the difficult situation resulting from the Gradisca war and the hot moment of the Bedmar plot in 1618, just when Antonio Priuli finally became doge. An opening chapter concludes the tesis putting the Ducal palace transformations within the current transformation cycles of the other headquarters of the Venitian power in Main Land and Sea Land main towns. The aim is to catch the political function from architecture design process in a Republic. Public palaces are sophisticated representations from power. Theirs material transformations are as a consequence the tools from complex negotiations in grade of overall political crisis moments

Full text
Abstract:
French law is usually understanding the abstention as the abstention fault. However, the abstention of the holder of a prerogative can not be analyzed this way and requires a new juridical approach. Abstention creates an equivocal situation by being a refusal, silent and temporary, to immediately enjoy the effects of a prerogative in order to retain them until the most appropriate moment. By being unclear unlike an active exercise or a real renunciation, it generates indeed unpredictability and a lack of legal safety. This insecurity is, moreover, exacerbated by erroneous interpretations of abstention and by the aggravation of the consequences affecting the one who suffers from it with the passing time. As a result, due to the absence of a legal status of abstention, it is imperative to take up the unpredictability problem of the abstention of the holder of a prerogative in order to attempt to mitigate it, while highlighting its legitimacy. The appearing necessary solution finds its way in the regulation of the behavior of the one abstaining in time. Consequently, from the end of a reasonable period, preserving his liberty within the time limit, he has to respect the standard of a reasonable agent. Failing that, his liability could be incurred. This would not exclude the accountability of the person who suffers from abstention

Abstract:
This practicum is an exploration of the meaning of spirituality in the discourse of landscape architects as a means of understanding how people experience the urban and public realm in a relational and community driven approach. The spiritual is discussed as a relationship between the dualisms of the ordinary and extraordinary and the strange and familiar. Further, multicentered neighbourhoods build attachment to place in diverse and unique ways that build strong communities that embrace difference and seek to embody those at the margins of society. Further communities that strive for plurality create broad openness that is welcoming and inclusive. Finally, the relational city is designed from a place of generosity such that territorial bounds are loosened and communities operate with great empathy. The neighbourhoods of Wolseley, Armstrong’s Point and West Broadway are explored in narrative and imagery to actualize the theory and create cause for five design interventions concluding each chapter.

Abstract:
This project was arrived at by observing and collecting a particular building type, the free standing single room, no one of the buildings floor plans exceeds a 1,000 sq. ft.; typically they are about 500 sq. ft., with the smallest being 16 sq. ft. What sets each one apart is their individual use. They all have radically different uses. Program in almost all cases has adapted to fit the size constraints with few acceptions was the typical footprint modified, always remaining a simple rectangle. The temporal shifts, or phases (defined pp. 7-19) of use are concealed within each building. This is achieved by each building's unique use of components (defined p. 5). The physical size of the building is insignificant relative to its presence. These buildings are an essential part of the built fabric, urban or rural. Adaptability and re-use are the methods that make these buildings essential and pervasive. The project examines this ordinary type, finding its most extraordinary qualities and suggests an evolutionary model synthesized from the attributes of the 'case studies'.

The main purposes of this thesis are to discuss the intention of “Ordinary and Extraordinary” contained in the landscape paintings, and to clarify the original meaning of “Ordinary and Extraordinary” through two Chinese books, Sun Zi Bingfa in “the change and mutual influence of the Ordinary and Extraordinary” and Su-p’u Hsü by Sun K’uo-t’ing in Tang Dynasty who proposed that calligraphy study has three stages. Through the process of calligraphy to study the process of a painting, the relationships of each stage to human’s life can be analyzed. “Ordinary and Extraordinary” is normal and abnormal in the landform situation which is fluctuated by the terrain. Firstly, it was used to allegorize soldier in military tactics. “The most abruptness in a running script of calligraphy is extraordinary.” (Dong qi Chang, Ming Dynasty) Therefore, “the extraordinary” is also extended into abruptness, meaning various changes and novel. Sun K’uo-t’ing in the Tang Dynasty applied “Extraordinary” to military tactics in political strategy, and rose “the extraordinary is to face and overcome the dangerous situations and to realize the change of the authority.” Therefore, “Ordinary and Extraordinary” are used in the structure of calligraphy naturally. “Ordinary” has two meanings. One is the foundation. When foundation is solid and naturally developed, principle naturally exists in heart and the common sense can be known. Another is personal character. Personal character is the foundation of calligraphy and painting. Personal character is formed by external orders, then naturally developed into characteristics till the positive essence conduced and reaching the condition of peace. Therefore, personal character is not only the inner foundation of “Ordinary”, but also the intrinsic key of “Extraordinary”.

Birefringent crystals are often used to fabricate many optical devices, such as birefringent prisms and wave plates. In this thesis, a method for measuring the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices of a birefringent crystal by using circularly polarized heterodyne interferometry is presented. Firstly, a linearly polarized laser with an electro-optic modulator and a quarter-wave plate is used to act as a circularly polarized heterodyne light source. Next, according to Jones calculus and the reflective characteristics of the birefringent crystal, the test signal intensity with a cosine wave form can be obtained after the light reflected from the crystal passes through an analyzer. The phase differences between the reference beam and the test beam are the function of the azimuth angle of the crystal and the incident angle, and the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices can be estimated simultaneously by substituting the measured values of phase differences into the above function. Because only the reflective characteristics of a light beam are used, the thickness and the surface flatness of the test material are not required. In addition, it is very stable and has high resolutions owing to its common-path heterodyne interferometric structure.

This thesis is a case study of localized street carnival at the Dream Community of His-Chi, Taipei County, intending to explore how a new urban immigrant community ushered in the western community festival ritual and autonomously cultivated, from bottom up, new bodily experiences at rigid urban spaces via creative workshops and arts parade. This particular urban cultural event which induced local residents to participate collectively in a theatrical street spree and wild performances intentionally disturbed the ordinary order of everyday life through heightened tension under an extraordinary condition. It reconstructed scenes of everyday life, released collective energy within transitional and temporary period of time, and transformed the public perception and identification of modern urban streetscape predominated by the uses of automobiles. Community festival is a newly-developed collective mechanism of cross-disciplinary connection. It opens up the boundary between body and space, and further fosters their dialectical and dynamic relationship rather than an one-dimensional dominance or restriction.. This is a different mobilization mode from general architectural study, social geography, and community empowerment, providing an alternative urban experience of spatial liberation in contrast with the daily routines delineated by docile bodies.

Title of Thesis: A Close Look at an Ordinary Person with an Extraordinary Legend – the Life Story of Bukut, an Aboriginal Elementary-school Principal Name of Institute: Department of Educational Policy and Administration, College of Education, National Chi Nan University Pages:154 Graduation Time: 07/13 Degree Conferred: Master of Education Student Name: Yu,Hsiu-Ying Advisor Name: Feng-I Feng Abstract The purpose of this study is to discuss as well as recount Bukut, the principal’s educational philosophy, leadership, her own ethnic identity throughout all her life-career development, and her educational experiences of dedicating to ethnic-identy education via Taiwanese-aboriginal-music school The study chose life story, a qualitative research method to present Bukut, the principal’s story. By interviewing and observing the principal herself, the working environment as well as other relevant people. This study analyzed, induced and collated all the data and reached the following conclusion: 1. Maternal influence have strong impact on Bukut’s ethnic identity In the life story of Bukut, the principal, the way that her mother educated her affected her so deely. It resulted in Bukut’s endurance, stress-resistance, enjoyment-procrastinatio, internal control, agressiveness and slelf-assertivenes, undefeat and her being helpful to others. 2. Bukut’s educational philosoph of love, humanity and diverse-cultures She cultivates students to be energitic, harmonious, firm, inovative and visionary. Her school mission are inovation, creativity, great diversity, providing a happy, harmonious and healthy learning place, building moral character and cultivating students to be confidant, responsible, thankful and creative. 3. Meeting a great mentor during the confusion of ethnic identityethnic After entering mainstream society, Bukut encountered great difficulties in different cultures, especially in learning. This resulted in Bukut’s confusion in ethnic identity. The mentor that Bukut met was a person who is caring, empathetic supportive, and with talents in art, physical training. 4. The influence of music and aboriginal eduacation made a way to ethnic identity Education is an art. By teaching singing in chorus, the students learn their own culture, and learn to accept their own identities. By creating performing opportunities, students build their own confidence. 5. Regaining ethnic identity and cultre identity. Attaching the importance to the core value of Bunun value- harmony. When the principal mentioned ethnic cultural identity, he made the point that the core value of Bunun tribe is harmony. Education is not absolute, but a possibility. We should do our best to turn the limitation into limitlessness. 6. Dedicating to ethnic-identity education by founding aboriginal music school in order to preserve and spread tribal art She has a dream to be realized. The vision is getting clearer and clearer, bigger and bigger as well as further and further. By founding a Taiwanese Aboriginal Music School, her first intention is to make changes on students. The second one is to change parents’ view-poing. By organizing aboriginal children’s chorus, the principal enhences children’s ethnic and cultural identity. The principal also help to pass down the cultural legacy to the tribal children, to .made ideal model for the tribal people, to help the tribal to reciprocate and to preserve and spread tribal art. Uhl, L. William. "Artificial Nutrition and Hydration for Infants with Life-Terminating Conditions: Rethinking the Catholic Position." 2011. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/1234.

Full text
Abstract:
Infants with life-terminating conditions (ILTCs) are those whose conditions prevent them from living more than two years. When these infants have difficulty assimilating food and fluids orally, doctors can provide nutrition and hydration through artificial means. While artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) can provide benefits, it can also result in complications leading to pain and/or distress in addition to that which an ILTC may already be experiencing from one or more underlying conditions. Many medical experts maintain that withholding or withdrawing ANH can help a patient’s body produce its own analgesics. I consider four categories of ILTCs: 1) infants who receive prognoses of two weeks or less; 2) infants who will live longer than two weeks but no more than two years and who are not suffering or in distress; 3) infants who are not dying, but are in distress from the use of ANH; and 4) infants who are not dying, but are in distress from their conditions and/or ANH. I argue that in addition to providing natural analgesics, withholding or withdrawing ANH is a form of comfort care that prevents the occurrence of further complications requiring additional medical treatments and keeps ILTCs content. Under certain circumstances, the withholding or withdrawing of ANH should be obligatory. As it stands, the whole of Catholic teaching on ANH is inconsistent. Operating from the sanctity-of-life ethic, the Church teaches that ANH is an ordinary, therefore obligatory, form of care. But this position contradicts the view that any form of care presenting a grave burden to a patient and/or his family is extraordinary and therefore optional. In addition, by making ANH obligatory, the Catholic Church causes families to undergo heroic suffering (i.e., enduring more than what can be expected or asked of anyone), which the Church says is not required of everyone. I argue that rethinking the Catholic position on ANH will enable the Church to offer practical moral guidance for families to comfort ILTCs, help ILTCs and their families avoid heroic suffering, and provide spiritual care families of ILTCs need, all while still respecting the sanctity of life of every person.

Abstract:
The following diploma thesis deals with the analysis of two short stories by Adalbert Stifter from his collection Colorful stones - Rock Crystal and Granit. They were deliberately chosen, because in both stories children are the main protagonists. In these short stories there is always a boy and a girl, while the boy is always the one more experienced, and he protects the girl and brings her to safety. She follows him and obeys his instructions. Although the text contains many descriptions, it does not act statically because the heroes are on the run from danger, which gives the action dynamics. The text, the story, the language and the plot of the short stories as well as their common elements are analyzed. Furthermore, the theoretical concept, which is formulated in the preface to this collection, and whose major concepts are big and small, is confronted with the realization in these short stories.
