Young-woo, Han. A Unique Banchado. GB Folkestone: Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9781898823490.

Full text
Abstract:
Fully illustrated in colour, here is the first introduction in English to one of Korea’s outstanding cultural assets – the banchado (‘painting of the order of guests at a royal event’) – relating to all those taking part (1800 people) in the eight-day royal procession to Hwaseong (Gyeonggi Province) organized by King Jeongjo in 1795 for the dual purpose of visiting his father’s tomb and celebrating his mother’s sixtieth birthday. The banchado is a fine example of the meticulous record-keeping of the period (known as uigwe – the subject-matter of this book being known as the Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe) and the skills of the court artists at that time. In addition to the banchado illustrations, the Wonhaeng eulmyo jeongni uigwe contains extensive lists of all the participants in the procession, details of the workers and technicians involved, including their duties and wages. It even includes the different foods offered at meal-times, the quantity of ingredients and the costs. The author provides a full analysis of the context, planning, execution and significance of the event.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Homeric Hymn to Apollo as a case study in order to explore early Greek ideas of authorship, occasionality, literary permanence, and reception. The comparanda deployed come from archaic lyric and especially from Pindar’s epinicians. The first section claims that the speaker identifies himself as Homer and discusses some implications for how audiences conceptualize the hymn. The second section describes how the hymn anticipates its own reception on Delos and abroad. Getting the most out of this text, it is proposed, involves approaching it both as an enacted event and as a perpetuated artefact. The conclusion attempts to account for congruencies with lyric.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the interplay between first performance and subsequent reception in fifth-century lyric and especially in Pindar’s epinicians. It describes how poems trace their own travels from unrepeatable event to perpetuated artefact and draws conclusions about the shape of the literary culture behind Pindar’s odes. Six sections discuss six passages that map their journey from performance into permanence. A concluding section then uses these passages as case studies and primary evidence in order to draw overarching conclusions about the relationship between the rhetoric of performance and the realities of literary practices. By studying Pindar’s depictions of the life of his work we can better see how his poems found a place in a poetic culture stretching through time and space. Pindar brings the view sub specie aeternitatis into the moment of performance and also transmits the view from a certain hic et nunc into perpetuity.

Murphet, Julian. Modernism and the Absent Event of Romance. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190664244.003.0001.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter lays the groundwork for the substantive analyses to follow. It foregrounds Faulkner’s profound continuing attachment to romance tropes which his more modernist aesthetic sensibilities would increasingly deem invalid. It argues that Faulkner’s primary artistic challenge was finding ways and means to “manage” his anachronistic romanticism, via technical strategies of omission, repression, and tropological masking. The chapter both considers the lingering aesthetic ideology of romance in the modern United States, especially the South, and outlines a genealogy of literary tactics Faulkner was able to employ in order to discipline it, before introducing the major new formal device for which he was responsible: masking romance with figures taken from the new media system.

Abstract:
This publication contains abstracts of contributions presented at the conference "European Investigation Order – Practical Dilemmas and Theoretical Considerations", which was held online on 8th and 9th of December 2020. Practitioners and academics from multiple EU Member States shared best practices and identified key shortcomings of the European Investigation Order. The event was executed as an integral part of the EU JUST project “European Investigation Order – Legal Analysis and Practical Dilemmas (EIP-LAPD)”, coordinated by the University of Maribor. The structure of the publication roughly follows the agenda of the conference. In the first part the future of mutual recognition and judicial cooperation in criminal matters in the EU is addressed. The second part is more closely focused at the European Investigation Order. Some theoretical dilemmas as well as practical considerations are presented. Lastly, some national reports which were drafted as a key deliverable of the EIO-LAPD project are also outlined.

Manual for Surveillance of Events Supposedly Attributable to Vaccination or Immunization in the Region of the Americas. Pan American Health Organization, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123867.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the essential components of the safe vaccination system is the surveillance of events supposedly attributable to vaccination or immunization (ESAVI). This surveillance is aimed at early detection of any adverse events that may occur following immunization, in order to monitor and classify risks related to a vaccine, the manufacturing process, transportation, storage, administration, and any preexisting condition in the vaccinated person, and to rule out an association between the event and the vaccine. This manual has been adapted for the Region of the Americas from the Global Manual on Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Immunization, published by the World Health Organization in 2014. It provides a comprehensive technical review of all processes and procedures for applying and implementing high-quality ESAVI surveillance systems. It brings together the expertise of vaccine safety specialists from the Region and from around the world, experts from national immunization programs, national regulatory bodies, and other institutions that have developed relevant knowledge on surveillance of these events. It is hoped that this document will serve as a guide to provide national immunization program managers, pharmacovigilance officers of national regulatory authorities, and other institutions responsible for monitoring vaccine safety with tools to facilitate their task, enabling them to apply international standards to issues such as event detection, event investigation, causality assessment, management of ESAVI data, and risk communication.
