Abstract:
Literary education and language education are connected by a relationship of mutual exchange. On the one hand, without the mastery of appropriate language skills it is impossible to grasp the complexity of literary works. On the other, improving language competence is one of the multiple aims of literary education. Moreover, considering the current multicultural dimension of the Italian school system, teaching literature from an intercultural perspective provides an opportunity to foster the development of relational skills while discussing the meaning of the works. In this scenario, we explore the state of the art of literary education and the teaching of literature in Italy and we consider their implications with language education, intercultural education, and intercultural communication. Furthermore, we present both a model of literary and intercultural communicative competence and a hermeneutic and relational method, also aimed at improving language acquisition and promoting intercultural awareness. In our view, literary and intercultural communicative competence makes it possible to communicate effectively in events where the language is spoken in order to understand literary texts, to identify the original meanings, to discuss their significance from the students’ current perspective, and to formulate critical judgements. The aim of the volume is to offer content and methodological resources for the teaching of literature that can impact positively on the development of language and relational skills. Thus, we draw up some guidelines aimed at increasing students’ motivation for studying the works, fostering their active participation and allowing literature to preserve its educational function.

MacBride, Fraser. Russell’s Higher-Order Judgement Relation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198811251.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter radically redraws the relationship between Russell and Wittgenstein in the 1910s, overturning the orthodox theory that Wittgenstein sunk Russell’s multiple theory of judgement. Starting from 1903, the chapter explains how Russell’s conception of the particular–universal distinction evolved under pressure from both developments in his thinking about the nature of judgement and the nature of relations, concerning the unity of the former and the direction of the latter. This shows that Russell wasn’t overcome by Wittgenstein’s criticisms of his multiple relation theory of judgement in 1913 and that Russell continued to develop the multiple relation theory up until 1919.

Abstract:
What constitutes an authoritative judgment for attribution? Is that the same thing as a sound and universally true judgment? Furthermore, what are the political implications of acknowledging that attribution relies on judgment? Taking account of political judgment brings an important contribution to the debate on attribution by displacing the usual focus on technical constraints to a focus on political ones. It transpires that political judgment for attribution is neither good nor bad; it is fallible but inescapable. Attribution is a process that constantly evolves and is never perfect, due to its inherent reliance on judgment. This reliance on judgment in order to attribute cases threatening national security explains a useful trend: attribution is always possible, but with differing degrees depending on the authority and trust conferred on the entity expressing the judgment. In fact, though, the veracity of the judgment expressed is only secondary to its authoritative value: the role of attribution is primarily to convince an audience that its consequences were called for. Technical forensic evidence for attribution is therefore important; but so is the extent to which the public will be convinced of the guilt of the alleged instigator.

Stanwood, P. G. Sin, Judgement, and Eternity. Edited by Andrew Hiscock and Helen Wilcox. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199672806.013.39.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of early modern literary texts that address sin, when sin is understood as contempt levelled against the established order of the Church and public life. That salvation from sin might be achieved through individual effort, not exclusively through Divine grace, was a belief promoted by many sectarians but condemned by ecclesiastical and political authority, which saw only heresy and disorder in such belief. Judgement is seen in terms of penitence and confession, and of last things and end times. Scriptural warnings of the last days urge all people to be ready for imminent judgement; for the time is near when the unfaithful and wicked fall calamitously, but the faithful and obedient celebrate joyously in the Divine redemption. Eternity is described through epic, lyric, and prose texts that connect this earthly life to heavenly immortality, or light informing darkness, or the image of an unbroken circle.

Abstract:
Although Bull is often identified as a theorist of international society, this volume has shown that there is more to The Anarchical Society than international society, narrowly construed. The contemporary relevance of Bull’s work is clearest when we recognize the flexibility of his conceptual framework and, in particular, the often overlooked potential of his concept of the ‘world political system’, of which modern international society is only a part. It is also helpful to recognize the provisional nature of Bull’s intellectual priorities and of his empirical and evaluative judgements. Bull’s argument that international society provides the surest route to world order reflected his judgement at ‘present’ and we can revise it today without doing violence to his intellectual project. This concluding essay highlights the flexibility of Bull’s approach and the provisional nature of his judgements while also reviewing the limits of this flexibility and identifying possible future directions of inquiry.

Abstract:
This chapter reports a case study of ‘manipulation’. It argues that the case study of manipulation confirms that the supposition that the Other lives in a world just like my own is often the cause of serious misunderstandings—the source of negative emotions and of misleading value judgements and stigmatization that interfere with one’s capacity to care for other persons and to make sense of their behaviour. In order to empathize with these persons and make sense of their behaviour we need to acknowledge the existential difference, the particular autonomy, which separates us from their way of being in the world. Any forgetting of this difference—for instance between my own world and that of a person who ‘manipulates’ the others—will be an obstacle to empathic understanding, since these people live in a life-world of which the structure is (at least in part) different from my own.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses various issues that are involved in combining individual items to form a single scale. The topics covered include whether or not to weight the each of the items to reflect its supposed importance. Another consideration is whether items should be weighted differently for each person based on their salience or importance to that individual. Related to this is ‘implicit’ weighting, where various subscales of an instrument have differing numbers of items. The chapter then discusses various ways of transforming the final score in order to normalize them. Finally, it describes different methods of setting cut points based on the distribution and expert judgement.

Lee, Jongkyung. Passages outside of chs 13–23 that express inclusivity towards the nations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198816768.003.0009.

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the passages that sound positive towards the nations in the book of Isaiah outside of chs 13-23 are surveyed and discussed in the order of their presumed date of composition. A particular interest in the positive future for the nations began to take a meaningful place in the book through the introduction of 2:2-4 in the exilic period. Various aspects were added to the vision of 2:2-4 at different periods such as: 1) compassion towards the nations that had experienced divine judgement in a way comparable to Israel; 2) the nations’ subservience towards Israel in the new world-order; 3) visions about lowered cultic boundaries between Israel and the nations; and 4) Zion becoming one of many places of YHWH’s dominion. Of these, the first two aspects (with greater emphasis on the first) were what our hypothesized late-exilic passages in chs 13-23 have in common.

Brown, Charles Brockden. Wieland; or The Transformation, and Memoirs of Carwin, The Biloquist. Edited by Emory Elliott. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/owc/9780199538775.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the earliest American novels, Wieland (1798) is a thrilling tale of suspense and intrigue set in rural Pennyslvania in the 1760s. Based on an actual case of a New York farmer who murdered his family, the novel employs Gothic devices and sensational elements such as spontaneous combustion, ventriloquism, and religious fanaticism. The plot turns on the charming but diabolical intruder Carwin, who exercises his power over the narrator, Clara Wieland, and her family, destroying the order and authority of the small community in which they live. Underlying the mystery and horror, however, is a profound examination of the human mind's capacity for rational judgement. The text also explores some of the most important issues vital to the survival of democracy in the new American republic. Brown further considers power and manipulation in his unfinished sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, which traces Carwin's career as a disciple of the utopist Ludloe.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the ways in which the traffic between life and stage is always governed by a set of social, ethical, and interpretive norms, the violation of which threatens to humiliate (at best) or physically harm (at worst) the spectator. More specifically, it considers the problem of epistemological decorum in early modern theatre and describes the figure of the female playgoer as a model for indecorous participation, one that knowingly exploits the tensions between actuality and theatricality in order to sustain the play while also revealing its dependence upon the absorption and judgement of audiences. The chapter first provides an overview of the social logic of decorum in early modern England before turning to the perceptual contract that makes theatrical fiction possible. It argues that such a contract must be upheld by spectators in so many different ways at once—imaginatively, affectively, ethically—that it may dissolve at any moment; indeed, any act of theatre worth the same will always seek deliberately to push this contract to its limit.

Owens, David. Epistemic Akrasia. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198713234.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
In a case of practical akrasia, we freely do something even though we judge that we ought not to do it. This chapter discusses the possibility of epistemic akrasia. Epistemic akrasia is possible only if (a) a person’s (first-order) beliefs can diverge from their higher-order judgements about what it would be reasonable for them to believe, and (b) these divergent (first-order) beliefs are freely and deliberately formed. Several recent authors deny the possibility of epistemic akrasia because they doubt that (a) can be true. I argue that though (a) can indeed be true, (b) cannot. On this point, believing is contrasted with guessing.
