Abstract:
This paper presents the problem of optical measuring machine calibration, emphasizing the calibration of the "optical system", omitting the calibration of the "machine system". The calibration of an optical measuring machine is the first step before using the instrument for any application. For this purpose, a mathematical model has been developed to transform the coordinates of a point in space (3D) into coordinates of a point in an image (2D). Using this camera model, a calibration procedure has been developed using a grid distortion pattern. Finally, a procedure for calculating the uncertainty of the camera and geometric distortion parameters based on the Monte Carlo method has been developed.

Abstract:
Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are the most common measuring systems used for assessing the compliance of manufactured components with their geometrical specifications. Optical CMMs are currently gaining popularity as they enable fast and contactless measurement with accuracy almost as high as in case of tactile measurement. During the performing of measurement, the points at which the measurement is conducted are usually not exactly at the intended location, but due to different impacts (error sources), they are in the area surrounding this location. This paper presents a method for modelling the reproduction of point coordinates as probability ellipses geometrically limiting the area in which the actual measurement points may lie. Different mathematical algorithms for the description of these ellipses were examined and a discussion on the selection of the best method is presented in this paper.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a tool image inspection and measuring system by C++ Builder. Firstly, tool images are captured online for geometry analysis via a disassembled inspection mechanism mounted on the Z-axis of a five-axis tool grinding machine. One can use the controller of the machine to set the coordinate location of the mechanism and implement the humanized functions of autofocusing and automatic measurements. The digital images are calculated by the subpixel approach to improve the measurement resolution, and filtered the edge point location by Hough transform to upgrade the precision. The human machine interface (HMI) has a tutoring manner for users to operate the measuring procedures. These proposed functions can measure the geometric dimension such as the diameter, radius, and angle of different end mills or drills after finishing the tool grinding processes. Furthermore, the grinding processes can refer the online measured results to compensate the tool dimension. Therefore, this online image inspection and measuring system can improve the precision of tool grinding, product quality, and reduce the product cost. Finally, experiments are presented to show that the repeatability errors are ± 2 μm and ± 1 μm for the diameter and the radius measurements of end mills, respectively. The percentage error is 0.116% for measuring the point angle of a drill. Thus, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method that can be employed to measure tool geometry of different cutting tools.

The paper describes the operation of a high-precision wide scale three-dimensional nanopositioning and nanomeasuring machine (NPM-Machine) having a resolution of 0,1 nm over the positioning and measuring range of 25 mm x 25 mm x 5 mm. The NPM-Machine has been developed by the Technische Universität Ilmenau and manufactured by the SIOS Meßtechnik GmbH Ilmenau. The machines are operating successfully in several German and foreign research institutes including the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The integration of several, optical and tactile probe systems and scanning force microscopes makes the NPM-Machine suitable for various tasks, such as large-area scanning probe microscopy, mask and water inspection, circuit testing as well as measuring optical and mechanical precision work pieces such as micro lens arrays, concave lenses, mm-step height standards.

Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) are commonly used for geometry verification and replication on solid parts and work pieces on many scales. As the parts predicable continues to grow smaller and smaller, so grows the need to accurately measure the dimensional accuracy of these parts. This is partly because of how the critical part tolerances become as dimensions shrink and geometries become more complex. Research is currently underway at the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop a system for dimensional metrology at the nano-scale. The goal is to develop a versatile, non-contact, three-dimensional system capable of making accurate measurements on the nano level of form attributes of micro electro-mechanically manufactured parts. The Nano-CMM developed consists of a laser probe, a 6-axis positioning table, and a support frame. This paper describes the calibration of probe, processing of measurement signals, detection of solid edges, and software interface for system automation.

This final thesis is dealing with stating uncertainty of optical measuring device Micro-Vu Sol 311, which is located at Faculty of mechanical engineering in Brno. Overview of coordinate measuring machines (CMM for short) and analyzed present status of optical CMM is in summation. This part also includes basic metrology concepts and methodology of determination of uncertainty of measuring instrument. Content of following parts of thesis is detailed description of Micro-Vu SOL 311 machine and etalons that were used in determination of enhanced uncertainty of measurement such as gage blocks, laser interferometer and glass scale. This graduation work is about co-ordinal measuring machines (CMM) with optical reader system and optical CMM. In accordance with submission and in terms of survival well known contactless systems the direction is to make methodology objective classification of rating with granting summary of these systems. The first part contains optical principles for visual scanner in CMM and optical CMM. Ist is described there principle of contactless obtaining steric digital version of measured object with using laser and optical facilities. The second part contains brief makes survey of these contactless systems and their component which are used for co-ordinal measuring. The survey is devided into optical readers, which are put on CMM brake or on mobile measuring brake and on optical CMM, which localize position measuring/sensing head in the space or they read measured object from specific distance – fotogrammetric. Characteristic of offered systems and chart with technical data are mentioned with each maker. The third and fourth part is about submission methodology for objective choice suitable sort of reader, optical CMM in target of characteristic reader system quality. And from this methodology is given the choice of suitable exponent stationary measuring machine with contact and contactless way of reading and their comparison.

The diploma thesis deals with the capability assessment of an optical coordinate measuring machine according to VDA 5. The capability assessment is an effective tool for deciding whether the evaluated measuring machine is capable for the intended use and under which conditions its use is possible. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the analysis of coordinate measuring machines, with a closer focus on a subset of optical measuring machines and the analysis of their capability assessment procedures. In the practical part of the thesis, the selected procedure is applied on the specific measuring machine Micro-Vu Sol 311. The main contribution of this thesis is a description of the possibilities of the considered coordinate measuring machine for its further use in the educational process at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Brno University of Technology.

AbstractSeveral approaches exist for measuring greenhouse gases (GHGs), mainly CO2, N2O, and CH4, from soil surfaces. The principle methods that are used to measure GHG from agricultural sites are chamber-based techniques. Both open and closed chamber techniques are in use; however, the majority of field applications use closed chambers. The advantages and disadvantages of different chamber techniques and the principal steps of operation are described. An important part of determining the quality of the flux measurements is the storage and the transportation of the gas samples from the field to the laboratory where the analyses are carried out. Traditionally, analyses of GHGs are carried out via gas chromatographs (GCs). In recent years, optical analysers are becoming increasingly available; these are user-friendly machines and they provide a cost-effective alternative to GCs. Another technique which is still under development, but provides a potentially superior method, is Raman spectroscopy. Not only the GHGs, but also N2, can potentially be analysed if the precision of these techniques is increased in future development. An important part of this chapter deals with the analyses of the gas concentrations, the calculation of fluxes, and the required safety measures. Since non-upland agricultural lands (i.e. flooded paddy soils) are steadily increasing, a section is devoted to the specificities of GHG measurements in these ecosystems. Specialised techniques are also required for GHG measurements in aquatic systems (i.e. rivers), which are often affected by the transfer of nutrients from agricultural fields and therefore are an important indirect source of emission of GHGs. A simple, robust, and more precise methodof ammonia (NH3) emission measurement is also described.

The new differential cloudy triangulation method for quick and precise measurement of thickness of hot dynamic objects is proposed. The method is based on laser cloudy triangulation, used in the synchronous differential mode. The experimental model of the laser system for thickness measurements, which implements the proposed method, has been developed. Laboratory and industrial tests of the laser system have been performed. They confirm efficiency and possibilities of differential cloudy triangulation in metallurgy. The differential cloudy triangulation method may be used for geometry measurement of hot dynamic objects in a wide range of strong optical refractions in media.

Abstract:
Monitoring learners’ mental states via a passive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) allows to continuously estimate current abilities, available cognitive resources, and motivation. It bears the great potential to adapt educational contents, learning speed, and format to the learner’s needs via an intelligent tutoring system. We present a neurophysiological-based approach to continuously monitor learners’ current affective-emotional and cognitive states by measuring and decoding brain activity via a passive BCI. In two studies (N = 8 and N = 7), we investigate whether we can a) predict learners’ affective and cognitive states during a learning or training session, b) provide continuous feedback of recognized states to the learner and, thereby, c) increase performance and intrinsic motivation. Oscillatory power measures in the alpha (8 – 12 Hz) and theta (4 – 7 Hz) frequency band served as features for the prediction and visualization. Our results reveal that machine learning algorithms can distinguish different states of cognitive workload and affect. The approach contributes to the development of closed-loop neuro-adaptive tutoring systems which allow to monitor learners’ states, provide feedback, and adapt their parameters for an optimal learner-training fit and effective and positive learning experience.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) provides an accurate and versatile solution for industrial metrology, that is being in use for decades. Although the electromechanical components of these machines have not suffered a great evolution in the last decade, the software used for controlling the CMM have suffer a great development in the last years, making them more user friendly, offering more powerful solutions, such as better CAD support and a better degree of automation, resulting in a faster measuring process. Together with the implementation of new non-contact technologies, like optical sensors for measuring purposes. Overall this resulted in a step further in the functions of a CMM, the measuring process becomes more automatic for either calculations and machine control. The use of new technologies also offers the possibility to work with a bigger amount of data, and virtual data systems turning the process more versatile and able to satisfy the actual demand of the industry, reducing the overall time and price of the inspection process.

Abstract:
Abstract In many industrial applications, such as product prototype development, automation of inspection process can greatly improve product quality and product development cycle, time. This paper discusses a development of a vision aided automatic inspection using Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). We seek to integrate the flexibility afforded by computer vision systems with the precision of numerically controlled coordinate measuring machines to achieve a fully automatic and reliable inspection of the industrial parts. The 3-D design information and part specification from computer-aided design file is used for inspection point placement and CMM path planning. The proposed system demonstrates that optimal collision-free inspection paths can be efficiently generated for geometrically complex parts consisting of multiply intersecting features. This is made possible by using iterative subdivision of surfaces for point placement coupled with, efficient 3-D collision avoidance and path planning. The paper discusses different algorithms used, and presents experimental results.
