Abstract:
Non-invasive medical diagnosis has become popular due to the possibility of detecting illnesses in vivo and in real time this technique, often referred to as "optical biopsy", comprises several optical techniques such as thermography, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography and Raman spectroscopy among others. Particularly Raman spectroscopy is an optical technique based on the inelastic scattering of light that can detect disease markers, this technique has been successfully used to detect several types of diseases, however the high price of a Raman spectrometer makes it difficult for the medical community to adopt its use as a common diagnostic procedure. In this work a Raman spectroscopy system was designed and fabricated from low-cost readily available components. The system was characterized and the Raman spectra obtained was compared to commercial systems. Results show that it is possible to fabricate a custom Raman system with the desired optical configuration for non-invasive optical diagnosis at low costs and portable size.

Abstract:
The stress’s accumulation will critically affect optical device stability, leading to components’ deviation and film peeling. Stress control techniques based on strain cancelation cannot precisely match film stress, and it is difficult to reduce the total stress of multilayer film to ultra-low levels. Existing software for film system design is mainly based on 2D design concepts such as wavelength-spectrum and does not consider 3D design concepts such as wavelength-spectrum-stress, but the stress parameter plays an essential role in film performance, and it is necessary to use it as an optimization index for film design. In this paper, we introduce mechanical synchronization design into film system design. The multilayer film’s optimal structure is precisely matched by the genetic algorithm, and an ultra-low stress and wide-spectrum optical film element is developed under the dual requirements of optical performance and mechanical performance. This technique incorporates computer-aided design and automatically seeks an optimal combination of layered film nanostructures through self-compiled optical and mechanical compatible design software. While ensuring invariant optical properties, it can effectively reduce the total stress of multilayer film. This can provide a new idea for film stress control.

Abstract The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a ground-based experiment that aims to detect B-mode polarization anisotropies [1] in the CMB at angular scales around the ℓ ≃100 recombination peak. Systematic errors make ground-based observations of B modes at millimetre wavelengths very challenging and QUBIC mitigates these problems in a somewhat complementary way to other existing or planned experiments using the novel technique of bolometric interferometry. This technique takes advantage of the sensitivity of an imager and the systematic error control of an interferometer. A cold reflective optical combiner superimposes the re-emitted beams from 400 aperture feedhorns on two focal planes. A shielding system composed of a fixed groundshield, and a forebaffle that moves with the instrument, limits the impact of local contaminants. The modelling, design, manufacturing and preliminary measurements of the optical components are described in this paper.

To mitigate the trade-off between gain and bandwidth of CMOS multistage amplifiers, a receiver front-end (FE) that employs a high-gain narrowband transimpedance amplifier (TIA) followed by an equalizing main amplifier (EMA) is proposed. The EMA provides a high-frequency peaking to extend the FE’s bandwidth from 25% to 60% of the targeted data rate fbit. The peaking is realized by adding a pole in the feedback paths of an active feedback-based wideband amplifier. By embedding the peaking in the main amplifier (MA), the front-end meets the sensitivity and gain of conventional equalizer-based receivers with better energy efficiency by eliminating the equalizer stages. Simulated in TSMC 65 nm CMOS technology, the proposed front-end achieves 7.4 dB and 6 dB higher gain at 10 Gb/s and 20 Gb/s, respectively, compared to a conventional front-end that is designed for equal bandwidth and dissipates the same power. The higher gain demonstrates the capability of the proposed technique in breaking the gain-bandwidth trade-off. The higher gain also reduces the power penalty incurred by the decision circuit and improves the sensitivity by 1.5 dB and 2.24 dB at 10 Gb/s and 20 Gb/s, respectively. Simulations also confirm that the proposed FE exhibits a robust performance against process and temperature variations and can support large input currents.

This work is aimed at creating a modified invasive technique for assessing the liver’s functional reserves. A study of the degree of hepatodepression is carried out by measuring the plasma elimination of indocyanine green using the method of optical densitometry. This paper presents test results for an aqueous solution and an albumin solution, as well as the results of measurements of plasma elimination of indocyanine green for patients with liver disease. Perfecting the proposed method will make an important scientific contribution to modern diagnostic medicine. Diagnosing the stages in the progression of the disease and its developing complications can make it possible to rapidly correct the patient’s treatment algorithm, achieving positive outcomes in medical practice.

Surface plasmon resonance has become a widely accepted optical technique for studying biological and chemical interactions. Among others, detecting small changes in analyte concentration in complex solutions remains challenging, e.g., because of the need of distinguishing the interaction of interest from other effects. In our model study, the resolution ability of plasmonic sensing element was enhanced by two ways. Besides an implementation of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic nanostructure, we suggest concatenation with waveguiding substructure to achieve mutual coupling of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with an optical waveguiding mode. The dependence of coupling conditions on the multilayer parameters was analyzed to obtain optimal field intensity enhancement.

Laminar optical tomography (LOT) is a mesoscopic tomographic imaging technique ranging between confocal microscopy and diffuse optical tomography (DOT). Fluorescence LOT (FLOT) provides depth-resolved molecular information with 100–200 μm resolution over 2–3 mm depth. In this study, we use Monte Carlo simulation and singular-value analysis (SVA) to optimize the source-detector configurations for potential enhancement of FLOT imaging performance. The effects of different design parameters, including source incidence and detector collection angles, detector number, and sampling density, are presented. The results indicate that angled incidence/detection configuration might improve the imaging resolution and depth sensitivity, especially for low-scattering medium. Increasing the number of detectors and the number of scanning steps will also result in enhanced imaging performance. We also demonstrate that the optimal imaging performance depends upon the background scattering coefficient. Our result might provide an optimization strategy for FLOT or LOT experimental setup.

Therefore, the development of optical networks is very important that have maximum bandwidth by using different multiple access techniques. Optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) technique has considered as a good solution for high bandwidth network. Hybrid optical systems of OCDMA and time division multiplexing (OTDM) has been proposed in this paper to increase the number of simultaneous users. The results of hybrid OCDMA and OTDM system demonstrate that this system can make a considerable increase in the network scalability while ensuring sufficient data rate and an acceptable bit error rate. Where M-user OCDMA signals can be transmitted in different channels of an OTDM system. Due to its wide band facility compared with other access techniques, OCDMA used here. In addition to its high scalability for our radio network, the OTDM and SCM utilized. The combination of these efficient access technique and powerful time-sharing media are lead to increase the framework system scalability.</span>

AbstractFor many years, optical designers have great interests in designing efficient optimization algorithms to bring significant improvement to their initial design. However, the optimization is limited due to a large number of parameters present in the Non-uniform Rationaly b-Spline Surfaces. This limitation was overcome by an indirect technique known as optimization using freeform deformation (FFD). In this approach, the optical surface is placed inside a cubical grid. The vertices of this grid are modified, which deforms the underlying optical surface during the optimization. One of the challenges in this technique is the selection of appropriate vertices of the cubical grid. This is because these vertices share no relationship with the optical performance. When irrelevant vertices are selected, the computational complexity increases. Moreover, the surfaces created by them are not always feasible to manufacture, which is the same problem faced in any optimization technique while creating freeform surfaces. Therefore, this research addresses these two important issues and provides feasible design techniques to solve them. Finally, the proposed techniques are validated using two different illumination examples: street lighting lens and stop lamp for automobiles.

Indefinite optical properties, which are typically characterized by hyperbolic dispersion relations, have not been observed in naturally occurring materials, but can be realized through a metamaterial approach. We present here the design, fabrication and characterization of nanowire metamaterials with indefinite permittivity, in which all-angle negative refraction of light is observed. The bottom-up fabrication technique, which applies electrochemical plating of nanowires in porous alumina template, is developed and demonstrated in achieving uniform hyperbolic optical properties at a large scale. We developed techniques to improve the uniformity and to reduce the defect density in the sample. The non-magnetic design and the off-resonance operation of the nanowire metamaterials significantly reduce the energy loss of electromagnetic waves and make the broad-band negative refraction of light possible.

The paper presents a comparison between two sets of experimental results in a centrifugal flow pump. The tested impeller is the so-called SHF impeller for which many experimental data have been continuously produced to built databases for CFD code validations with various levels of approximation. Measurements have been performed using optical techniques: 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique on an air test model and 2D laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) technique on a water model, both for different flow rates. For the present study, results obtained by these optical techniques are compared together in terms of phase averaged velocity and velocity fluctuations inside the impeller flow passage for design flow rate.

Plasmonic gratings provide effective photon management techniques in thin-film solar cells, capable of extending the optical thickness of the solar cell’s active layer. However, the ultra-broadband nature of such application makes an optimal design of the grating structure quite challenging, since a fully periodic grating operates only in specific spectral ranges. To achieve a more broadband design, semiperiodicity is introduced, which, due to having controllable disorder, is an apt solution in broadband optical applications. In this work, semiperiodic double gratings as a broadband photon management technique are introduced in order to improve the optical absorption of c-Si thin-film solar cells, and optimized through numerical structural optimization. Physical parameters of both front and back gratings are determined taking the spectrally integrated optical absorption as the figure of merit and subsequently a semiperiodic double grating is established through adding defects to the fully periodic structure. Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensing (Brillouin D-FOS) is a powerful technology for real-time in situ monitoring of various physical quantities, such as strain, temperature, and pressure. Compared to local or multi-point fiber optic sensing techniques, in Brillouin-based sensing, the optical fiber is interrogated along its complete length with a resolution down to decimeters and with a frequency encoding of the measure information that is not affected by changes in the optical attenuation. The fiber sensing cable plays a significant role since it must ensure a low optical loss and optimal transfer of the measured parameters for a long time and in harsh conditions, e.g., the presence of moisture, corrosion, and relevant mechanical or thermal stresses. In this paper, research and application regarding optical fiber cables for Brillouin distributed sensing are reviewed, connected, and extended. It is shown how appropriate cable design can give a significant contribution toward the successful exploitation of the Brillouin D-FOS technique.

Artificial blood pump assistance of the failing human heart can allow it to recover. Analysis of blood pump fluid flow is a useful tool for design development and thrombosis minimization. The aim of this study was to investigate fluid flow, particularly ventricular clearance rate and stagnation areas, in four different blood pump geometries and to determine the best design. The blood pumps consisted of a polyurethane ventricle, and combinations of inlet/outlet pipe angles and compression plate shapes. A video camera recorded the motion of fluid labelled with an optical tracer (Methyl Blue histological dye). A novel processing method was developed to produce colour maps of tracer concentration, experimentally calibrated. An overall picture of fluid flow in each pump geometry was generated by considering clearance curves, tracer concentration maps and inflow jet animations. Overall and local mixing coefficients are calculated for each pump. The best geometry featured straight inlet/outlet pipes and a domed compression plate. This optical tracer technique has proven convenient, economical, sensitive to low concentrations of tracer and provides instantaneous pictures of tracer distribution in a ventricle.

Aiming at the problems of low efficiency of traditional detection methods for surface defects of precision optical element and inconvenient detection for optical elements of different calibers, a adjustable optical element defects detecting device for large laser devices is designed. The key technical points of system composition, detection environment, illumination design and image stitching are expounded. According to the characteristics of surface defects of optical element, such as the difference of contour, gray scale, contrast and ambiguity, a classification method based on FCM is proposed. The experimental results show that the system can realize the automatic detection of surface defects, also it can effectively distinguishes micron-scale defects and has good defect recognition performance. The overall average recognition rate reached to 93.3%.

However, unlike optical spectroscopic imaging, traditional electron microscopes provide limited spectroscopic information in terms of their energy resolution. Only recently, owing to advances in monochromated STEM-EELS, have transmission electron microscopes (TEMs) been able to attain a high energy resolution. We recently proposed combining spectrally selective photoexcitation with HRTEM to achieve sub-nanometer scale optical imaging, a technique we called photoabsorption microscopy using electron analysis (PAMELA). To realize PAMELA-TEM experimentally, we constructed a TEM holder with an optical feedthrough, capable of photoexciting materials with different wavelengths. In this article, we describe our process for designing and fabricating an optical TEM specimen holder, highlighting important aspects of the design.

Abstract The report tells about the design of a middle wave infrared continuous-zoom imaging optical system. To capture the image in an «eye-type» infrared optical system a multi-element sensor is used. To increase the contrast of the thermal image the sensor is equipped with a cold aperture. The use of an optical system based on the continuous-zoom lens makes it possible to solve the problems of object detection and identification more effectively but requires taking into account some features of varifocal lenses. The optical system being analyzed in the report includes front zoom objective system and secondary imaging system. The front zoom optical system is composed of four groups and provides the focal length that is continuously changed with a large zoom ratio (15–20X) under the condition of a constant total length of the system. The secondary imaging system is designed for zoom system exit stop and sensor cold stop conjugation. The design technique represents analytical expressions and equations to obtain optical parameters of the front and secondary system components and the motion curves for movable groups.

Almost every child encounters at least one episode of ear infection before he/she reaches the age of seven. The typical treatment currently followed by physicians is visual inspection and antibiotic prescription. In most cases, a lack of improper treatment results in severe bacterial infection. Therefore, it is necessary to design and explore advanced practices for effective diagnosis. In this review paper, we present the various types of ear infection and the related pathogens responsible for middle ear infection. We outline the conventional techniques along with clinical trials using those techniques to detect ear infections. Further, we highlight the need for emerging techniques to reduce ear infection complications. Finally, we emphasize the utility of Raman spectroscopy as a prospective non-invasive technique for the identification of middle ear infection.

This work deals in specifying the design considerations while constructing a Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) optical accelerometer working on capacitive sensing technique. Sensitivity is one of the most demanded characteristics of any sensor. The sensor considered is a MEMS capacitive accelerometer in which both displacement and capacitance are the primary sensing characteristics. This differential capacitive accelerometer causes change in displacement due to applied acceleration and further produces change in capacitance. So, the main focus in this work is to improve or select the suitable diaphragm dimensions of the differential capacitor in order to get optimal capacitive and displacement sensitivity. This is done for an Optical MEMS (MOEMS) based sensor where slight change has a large-scale impact. The electrical signal is converted to optical by adding an Optical Interferometer. Mach–Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) is used to carry out the intensity modulation which also gives protection in inflammable surroundings. This makes the system suitable for working in high temperature regions.

In the present work the hybrid natural shape optimal design approach is used along with a nonlinear programming (NLP) technique to find the optimal shapes of electronic packaging components. The design problems are formulated as min-max problems and linear and materially nonlinear finite element analyses provide the function values. The applicability of the developed methodology is illustrated using a design example that deals with the packaging design of a plastic pad array carrier digital package. The results indicate that the methodology can be used either as an effective way of evaluating different design alternatives or refining existing designs.
