Abstract:
This study seeks to replicate and extend Roksa and Potter's (2011) analysis of the association between intergenerational family background and academic outcomes by utilizing the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to examine alternative methods for operationalizing maternal educational background. Results indicate a positive association between maternal upward mobility and adolescent academic achievement. Measures of mobility affect adolescent achievement even when controlling for both mother's and maternal grandmother's educational attainment. Future research should examine the differential impact of extreme mobility, specifically downward mobility, on adolescent academic outcomes.

Bedford, Lee. "An Alternative Operationalization of Betrayal Trauma using Perceived Betrayal." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1609082/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many identified factors that correlate with whether an individual experiences adverse symptoms following a traumatic event. Research indicates that betrayal, where the victim is betrayed by another individual, may be one of these factors. Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT) posits that betrayal during trauma increases the likelihood of developing adverse psychological symptoms. BTT objectively dichotomizes traumas as high betrayal or low betrayal traumas based on details of the event. Though literature finds those who experience high betrayals experience more severe symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and dissociation than those who experience low betrayals, this objective classification is limited as it is based solely on the circumstances of the trauma and does not give the victim the option of indicating whether they felt betrayed. We believe perceptions of betrayal, whether the event meets the objective criteria of betrayal put forth by BTT or not, is an important predictor of trauma-related outcomes. This study (N = 244) found that perceived betrayal predicts symptoms of PTSD and depression independently, as well as when controlling for objective betrayal, dependence on the perpetrator, event centrality, anxiety, and dissociation. These findings indicate perceived betrayal is a unique construct that should be included in the operationalization of betrayal in future research. Objective betrayal is limited in that it is a permanent classification based on the circumstances of the traumatic event. Perceived betrayal, however, can be addressed and reduced by skilled clinicians and betrayal-specific treatments, thus reducing the effect betrayal has on trauma-related outcomes.

Sigdyal, Pratigya. "Exploring the Conceptualization, Operationalization, and Application of Relational Mindfulness." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1404554/.

Abstract:
Individuals vary in the level of their mental presence during interactions; some individuals are mentally present with others, while others are mired in their thoughts and emotions. Scholarly work on this area is limited, and we know very little about why some individuals display mental presence better than others. In this dissertation, I explore the concept through a series of three essays. In the first essay, I define relational mindfulness as the ability to be mentally present with others. Further, I propose that relational mindfulness has three essential features: others' focus, thought-switching, and emotional acceptance. I operationalize the scale to measure relational mindfulness and investigate its nomological network by correlating it with different constructs. Data from four different samples provide support for the three-factor structure of relational mindfulness and provide support for the relationship of relational mindfulness with related constructs. In the second essay, I explore the relevance of relational mindfulness for front-line employees by investigating the two pathways through which relational mindfulness can reduce fatigue of front-line employees. In the first pathway, I posited that relational mindfulness would decrease the intensity of surface acting of employees when their customers mistreat them, and thus reduce fatigue of employees. In the second pathway, I posited that relational mindfulness would increase the frequency of positive interactions between employees and customers, and thereby decrease fatigue experienced by employees. I tested the model by conducting two different studies. Overall, the results provided support for the posited hypotheses. In the third essay, I tested whether relational mindfulness can be enhanced through a mindfulness meditation by conducting a quasi-experimental study. Two groups; experimental and comparison groups participated in the pre-test, post-test surveys, and weekly surveys during the experiment. The results suggested that participants in both groups increased their relational mindfulness over time and there was no evidence that individuals in the mindfulness group differed from the comparison group.

Abstract:
Competitive advantage (CA) is an intuitively evident concept which has been widely used in theoretical research in strategy. But CA's diffuse image and its dynamic nature make it a difficult concept to apply. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive (or macro) CA construct capable of being applied in an empirical manner across a broad spectrum of business situations. This objective required both an adequate grounding of the CA concept within its nomological- net of theories and a new operationalization approach.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility, focusing on aspects of relationships in the supply chain and their impact on manufacturing flexibility. The research involves four manufacturing companies for studying the influence of four aspects of buyer-supplier relationship - trust/commitment, information sharing, supplier development and joint product development - on three external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility - mix, new products and volume. The study also observes the generalized effects of these relationships on manufacturing performance and on the levels of manufacturing flexibility shown by the companies studied. The buyer-supplier relationships are deeply analyzed and their general characteristics and effects on the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility are presented. In addition, the analysis of scope and achievability factors indicated the presence of little explored flexible resources in the companies studied. Finding ways for operationalizing flexibility must be seen as a priority question to obtain competitive advantage in manufacturing systems. This work shows how the relationships between the buyer and supplier can influence several external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility and, consequently, manufacturing performance.

Cacciotti, Gabriella. "Fear of failure in entrepreneurship : a review, reconceptualization and operationalization." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/73258/.

Full text
Abstract:
In entrepreneurship, the fear of failure has been identified as a significant barrier to entrepreneurial activity. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world's largest study of entrepreneurial activity, defines the fear of failure as a strong inhibitor for seizing opportunities and transforming entrepreneurial intentions into entrepreneurial actions. Contrary to entrepreneurship research, psychological theory offers a counterintuitive prediction of the outcomes of fear of failure. While early achievement theories argued that fear of failure inhibits behavior, later psychological research has found fear of failure to be dualistic in nature, sometimes motivating individuals to act while at other times inhibiting such action. Although there is no unified theory on fear of failure within the psychology literature, the theoretical background of this construct in entrepreneurship appears even more fragmented. An examination of the existing entrepreneurship literature on fear of failure reveals that scholars have used different definitions and measures to explain this phenomenon and investigate its effects on entrepreneurial behavior. Because these measures refer to a different nature of the fear of failure construct, it is very unlikely that they converge to capture the same phenomenon. Therefore, a clear understanding of the nature and effects of fear of failure in entrepreneurship is needed. In this respect, this thesis addresses the research question of how fear of failure can be defined and measured within the entrepreneurial process. Three articles have been developed to answer this research question. In Article 1, the conceptual issues associated with the current status of the literature on fear of failure in entrepreneurship and the characteristics of the entrepreneurial setting that shape the fear of failure experience are discussed. Building on these conceptual observations, Article 2 adopts a qualitative approach to investigate the experience of fear of failure antecedent and concurrent to the entrepreneurial process. Sixty-five entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs have been interviewed to show that fear of failure can be defined as a complex combination of cognition, affect, and behavior. Finally, in Article 3 four studies are conducted to develop and validate a new measure of entrepreneurial fear of failure. Findings from these three articles shed light on the fear of failure construct in entrepreneurship, which emerged as a context-sensitive phenomenon.

Larsen, Kathryn A. "The Operationalization of the Theoretical Antecedents of Collective Teacher Efficacy." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6759.

Full text
Abstract:
Much research on collective teacher efficacy focuses on outcomes, mainly the benefits to students. However, there is no research that explores how teacher teams enact the theoretical antecedents to collective efficacy set out by Bandura (1977, 1993), namely vicarious learning, verbal persuasion, psychological arousal, and mastery experiences, to make such achievements possible. This qualitative study explores the experiences of two teams of secondary language arts teachers who were collectively efficacious and how they operationalized Bandura's theoretical antecedents of collective teacher efficacy in becoming so. After verification of levels of personal and collective efficacy, team interviews were held specifically addressing the implementation of the four antecedents. Interview transcripts were coded and restoried, highlighting critical incidents in the process of becoming collectively efficacious. The findings for these two teams show an incomplete understanding of collective efficacy. It is often thought that enacting the four antecedents will result in a collectively efficacious team; however, my study demonstrates that teachers must become effective teacher teams before they could develop collective teacher efficacy. My findings indicate that relationships among team members are crucial for successful implementation of other elements. Implications for administrators revolve around their important role in helping teachers develop collegial relationships with each other. Team relationships can also have a significant impact on novice teachers when proper mentoring and support are provided.

Pérez, Sanagustín Maria del Mar. "Operationalization of collaborative blended learning scripts: a model, computational mechanisms and experiments." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/38360.

Full text
Abstract:
Portable and interactive technologies are changing the nature of collaborative learning practices. Learning can now occur both in and beyond the classroom and furthermore combine formal and informal activities monitored and orchestrated across spatial locations. This rises to a new type of orchestrated learning that we term Computer Supported Collaborative Blended Learning (CSCBL) scripts. This thesis investigates the challenges associated with the design of CSCBL scripts and with the technologies responsible for their enactment. Three contributions are presented. First, a conceptual model that combines 4 factors to be considered in the design of CSCBL scripts. Second, technological solutions operationalizing the aforementioned factors are proposed and evaluated through synthetic experiences. And third, four CSCBL experiments using 4SPPIces. These experiments are analyzed into two interrelated multicase case studies, whose cross-analyzed results provide an evaluation of the model, of the operationalization solutions supporting the enactment of the involved CSCBL scripts and of the educational value of the experiences themselves.

Abstract:
Self-determination has been recognized as a crucial trait to act as the causal agent of one’s life and face and navigate contextual opportunities and challenges. Given that self-determination instruction can benefit all adolescents and young adults having a disability or not, disentangling the effects of environmental opportunities in self-determination expression has the potential to inform self-determination development and instruction. The aim of this doctoral thesis is mainly to explore the impact of contextual opportunities, namely home and educational contexts, on the self-determination expression of young people with and without disabilities, through Causal Agency Theory lens. First, two questionnaires to assess self-determination essential characteristics and opportunities provided at home and in educational settings to engage in self-determined actions were adapted. Second, the scores collected with these instruments were psychometrically analyzed in a sample of 620 youth with and without disabilities. Finally, structural parameters estimation of a theoretical model tested integrating self-determination essential characteristics and contextual opportunities confirmed the significant impact of context in self-determination expression. The summarized work has led to the articles presented in this doctoral thesis.

Abstract:
In this paper, the phenomenon of changes in item characteristics over time (often referred to as drift) is discussed from several theoretical perspectives, and a new procedure for the detection of Item Parameter Drift (IPD) is proposed. An initial evaluation of the utility of the proposed procedure is conducted using simulated data modeled by the 2-Parameter Logistic (2PL) Item Response Theory (IRT) model. In addition to the proposed procedure, an IPD analysis of the simulated data is conducted using two known methods: Kim, Cohen, and Park's (1995) extension of Lord's (1980) Chi-square test of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) to multiple groups, and logistic regression. The results indicate high agreement and accuracy in the detection of true IPD using the two known methods, but poor performance of the proposed procedure. Possible explanations of the findings and future directions are discussed.

Abstract:
Automated driving systems allow to transfer a certain degree of vehicle control from the driver to a vehicle. By assisting, augmenting or even supplementing the driver, automated driving systems have been associated with enormous potential for improving driving safety, comfort, and efficiency - provided that they are used appropriately. Among those systems, conditional automated driving systems are particularly challenging for human-automation interaction: While the driver is no longer required to permanently monitor conditional automated driving systems, he / she is still expected to provide fallback performance of the dynamic driving task after adequate prior notification. Therefore, facilitating appropriate automation trust is a key component for enabling successful cooperation between drivers and conditional automated driving systems. Earlier work indicates that providing drivers with proper information about conditional automated driving systems might be one promising approach to do this. Considering the role of automation trust as a variable in the design of vehicle technology, however, also requires that drivers` automation trust can be viably measured in the first place. Accordingly, the objectives of this thesis were to explore difffferent methods for measuring drivers` automation trust in the context of conditional automated driving as well as the identification, implementation and evaluation of possible approaches for designing drivers` automation trust in conditional automated driving systems. For these purposes, three driving simulator studies with N = 280 participants were conducted. The results indicate that (i) both self-report measures and behavioral measures can be used to assess drivers` automation trust in conditional automated driving systems, (ii) prior familiarization with system limitations can have a lasting effffect on drivers` automation trust in conditional automated driving systems and (iii) particularly information about the processes of conditional automated driving systems might promote drivers` automation trust in these systems. Thus, the present research contributes much needed approaches to both measuring and designing automation trust in the context of conditional automated driving. In addition, the current findings might also be transferred to higher levels of driving automation as well as other domains and applications of automation

Full text
Abstract:
Background: The continued success of Lean thinking beyond manufacturing has led to an increasing interest to utilize it in software engineering (SE). Value Stream Mapping (VSM) had a pivotal role in the operationalization of Lean thinking. However, this has not been recognized in SE adaptations of Lean. Furthermore, there are two main shortcomings in existing adaptations of VSM for an SE context. First, the assessments for the potential of the proposed improvements are based on idealistic assertions. Second, the current VSM notation and methodology are unable to capture the myriad of significant information flows, which in software development go beyond just the schedule information about the flow of a software artifact through a process. Objective: This thesis seeks to assess Software Process Simulation Modeling (SPSM) as a solution to the first shortcoming of VSM. In this regard, guidelines to perform simulation-based studies in industry are consolidated, and the usefulness of VSM supported with SPSM is evaluated. To overcome the second shortcoming of VSM, a suitable approach for capturing rich information flows in software development is identified and its usefulness to support VSM is evaluated. Overall, an attempt is made to supplement existing guidelines for conducting VSM to overcome its known shortcomings and support adoption of Lean thinking in SE. The usefulness and scalability of these proposals is evaluated in an industrial setting. Method: Three literature reviews, one systematic literature review, four industrial case studies, and a case study in an academic context were conducted as part of this research. Results: Little evidence to substantiate the claims of the usefulness of SPSM was found. Hence, prior to combining it with VSM, we consolidated the guidelines to conduct an SPSM based study and evaluated the use of SPSM in academic and industrial contexts. In education, it was found to be a useful complement to other teaching methods, and in the industry, it triggered useful discussions and was used to challenge practitioners’ perceptions about the impact of existing challenges and proposed improvements. The combination of VSM with FLOW (a method and notation to capture information flows, since existing VSM adaptions for SE are insufficient for this purpose) was successful in identifying challenges and improvements related to information needs in the process. Both proposals to support VSM with simulation and FLOW led to identification of waste and improvements (which would not have been possible with conventional VSM), generated more insightful discussions and resulted in more realistic improvements. Conclusion: This thesis characterizes the context and shows how SPSM was beneficial both in the industrial and academic context. FLOW was found to be a scalable, lightweight supplement to strengthen the information flow analysis in VSM. Through successful industrial application and uptake, this thesis provides evidence of the usefulness of the proposed improvements to the VSM activities.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on one key theme, which is to understand the construct of organizational networking behaviors in business-to-business markets. It is concerned with two main issues, which are built into the research program of three empirical studies. The first issue is concerned with a systematic understanding of organizational behaviors in response to the embeddedness and interconnectedness of the network of business relationships that every organization has to deal with. Study 1 of the research program explores the concept termed ‘organizational networking behaviors’. This study adopts an industrial network approach, the central tenet of which is that firms undertake a continuous process of interaction with their important partners in the embedding context of the business network. A multi-informant approach, using semi-structured interviews, was used to collect qualitative data from thirty-one executive managers (in fifteen manufacturing firms in the UK). This study identified information acquisition, opportunity enabling, strong-tie resource mobilization and weak-tie resource mobilization as four types of organizational networking behaviors, which are reflected by their respective sub-types. The resulting conceptualization of organizational networking forms the basis for the operationalization of the construct in Study 2. While Study 1 takes an exploratory qualitative approach, Study 2 deploys a confirmatory quantitative approach since it is necessary to confirm/refute the resulting conceptualization and its types from Study 1. A rigorous scale construction and validation process was followed in this study. The conceptualization of the measurement model was carefully considered based on its theoretical underpinning. A second-order formative measurement structure was conceptualized, which required the employment of a multiple indicators and multiple causes (MIMIC) model for the validation of such a measurement model. A dataset of 603 responses was collected and analyzed to confirm the structure of the four types of organizational networking behaviors, which is in line with the results of Study 1.The second issue that the thesis is concerned with is the influences of such organizational networking efforts, which are examined from a firm’s behavioral perspective. Study 3 examines how organizational networking behaviors serve as the driver of a firm’s customer-oriented, competitor-oriented and relationship-oriented behaviors due to the sensing and seizing aspects of networking. It was also hypothesized that a firm’s customer-oriented, competitor-oriented and relationship-oriented behaviors positively affect firm performance. The test of these hypotheses required survey data collection, which was done through an on-line questionnaire. A dataset of 354 responses was collected from UK managers, whose organizations operate in business-to-business markets in either the manufacturing or services sectors. The use of statistical modeling techniques is similar to that of Study 2. The research results indicate that a firm’s network-oriented behaviors positively impact on the development of customer-oriented and competitor-oriented behaviors. They also foster relationship coordination with its important business partners within the network. In addition, the effective management of the firm’s portfolio of relationships is found to mediate the positive impact of network-oriented behaviors on firm profitability.

CAVICCHI, Caterina. "Sustainable development operationalization in healthcare organizations and the role of intellectual capital." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Ferrara, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11392/2488113.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates the operationalization of the sustainable development principle (SD) in health care organizations (HCOs). Based on the examination of the literature, the thesis uses a multi-method approach to investigate: a) the emerging interpretation about SD in the health context, b) intellectual capital (IC) factors that may affect the implementation of SD projects, c) the organizational approach used for sustainability decision making, and d) the main sustainability practices in the health care context. To answer these research questions, a survey was initially carried out through the realization of, which was addressed to General Directors (GDs) of Italian health care organizations, as responsible for HCOs’ strategic planning. Subsequently, the case study of an Italian Regional Health Service has provided the opportunity to analyze the implementation of a SD program within HCOs, introduced by a new policy agenda. The analyzes revealed that sustainability decision-making within these organizations is mainly a matter of existing organizational structures, combined in informal and occasional ways, or of collective bodies, in order to take advantage from different skills. A minority has however indicated the use of office/organizational positions: this approach does not allow cross-fertilization between different disciplines and could prevent the development of a SD culture. The construction of an IC model based on the reference literature, has allowed to test the contribution that these assets have given to the realization of SD projects within HCOs. Among them, according to GDs, the "research for efficiency" was the factor that played the most important role in this respect, while "skills and training" were perceived as less important probably due to the inability of the current academic system to set programs for health professions based on interdisciplinarity, as required by the nature of SD. In addition, the GDs who attributed high importance to information technology and advanced technologies for the realization of sustainable projects within the organization, were also those that have adopted SD strategies. The results of the case study have shown that the SD culture, especially for what concerns environmental sustainability, has not been able to develop at the operational level, the one of health professionals, as they were not involved in the process of strategic priorities’ definition; moreover, implemented projects were fragmentary. The relational capital was instead important as it allowed the implementation of environmental and clinical projects. SD performance measurement systems as part of structural capital were rather homogeneous and not consolidated, as well as the use of incentives. This suggests that the predominant focus on efficiency adopted by the national health policy may hinder their development. The study extends the knowledge about the role of IC for SD within public organizations. Study limitations concerned the low number of respondents to the survey and interviews conducted for the case study. Further research will test the developed model of sustainable IC for HCOs in other contexts in order to support strategic planning process, by checking the total and partial contribution of the identified assets to SD. In addition, it is necessary to deepen the role of the connections between different assets, to identify those combinations that help or hinder the implementation of SD within organizations. With reference to policy implications, the construction of a continuous dialogue between the institutions, HCOs’ management and health professionals is recommended in order to promote a shared SD culture.

An, Yehyun. "The Operationalization of Capacity Development: the Case of Urban Infrastructure Projects in India." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/72964.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the 1950s, Capacity Development (CD) has been an important component of international development agendas. It established the widespread consensus that the capacity of individuals and organizations is critical to maintaining and enhancing the effectiveness of development projects and programs. A problem, however, is that the concept has been applied without due consideration to how it should be adapted to the local context, making it more of a symbolic gesture. The application of CD to urban infrastructure projects in India is one such example. Recognizing the shortage of urban infrastructure as one of the major impediments in India's economic growth and rapid urbanization, the Government of India (GOI) launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in December 2005 to provide substantial central financial assistance to cities for urban development over a period of seven years. The GOI expected the JNNURM to reform institutions and strengthen human resource capability related to many areas of project delivery. During its implementation, however, the JNNURM has been confronted by problems related to a lack of capacity. This research reviews the capacity challenges related to the JNNURM program and considers the broader implications for urban infrastructure development in other developing countries. This research begins with the question "How can CD be operationalized?" From this starting point, the research seeks to reveal the operational values of CD. Following a detailed literature review on CD, capacity factors that are applicable to the urban sector in India are identified and a CD framework is developed. Two research methods--case studies and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA)--are adopted to answer the primary research questions. By leveraging the strength of these two methods, this research advances our understanding of the relationship between capacity and development goals such as improving project performance. In the case studies, this research investigates the gaps between CD theory and practice through the lens of practitioner perceptions of CD. In addition, unlike traditional thinking on the linear relationship between capacity and project outcomes, the case studies reveal two-way causal relationships between capacity and project outcomes that form a spiral structure between the project delivery process and capacity factors. Better capacity can enhance project performance and lead to better outcomes, and project performance and outcomes also influence and reinforce capacity in the reverse direction. Moreover, through the fsQCA, this research identified causal relationships between capacity factors and outcomes and demonstrated that the capacity factors generate different outcomes through their interactions with other capacity factors. This finding contributes to our understanding of how capacity is interconnected with development goals. In summary, this research contributes to both CD theory and CD practice based on a comprehensive approach that not only considers CD at multiple levels (environmental, organizational/network, and individual/project), but also covers different CD subjects such as context, actors, dimensions, processes, and impacts. Through this comprehensive approach, a range of important findings are developed that can help researchers and practitioners operationalize the complex concept of CD.

Abstract:
Emotional clarity (EC) refers to the ability to identify, understand, and distinguish one’s emotions (Gohm & Clore, 2000). The literature suggests that EC is highly related to emotion regulation (ER), such that individuals with higher EC are more likely to use adaptive ER strategies and individuals with lower EC are more likely to use maladaptive ER strategies (Vine & Aldao, 2014). EC has been measured with both self-report measures and physiological tasks. Due to the limitations of both self-report measures and physiological tasks, I aimed to develop a behavioral measure of EC using the concordance between change in individuals’ physiological responding and change in their subjective emotional states before and during a stressor task. In part one of the study, I created a behavioral measure and compared it to individuals’ self-reported emotional clarity. In part two, I examined the concurrent validity of the behavioral EC measure by assessing its relationships with maladaptive ER, adaptive ER, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI, a maladaptive ER strategy). Participants were 127 (90% female, Mage = 19.51, SDage = 1.31) young adults. Participants completed questionnaires of self-reported emotional clarity and ER strategies. Then, participants completed a modified Trier Social Stress Test in the laboratory (TSST; Waugh, Panage, Mendes, & Gotlib, 2010). Heartbeat was measured throughout and self-rated negative affect was measured before and after stress. Results indicated that behavioral EC was not associated with self-reported EC (r = .14, p = .178). Furthermore, structural equation modeling results indicated that behavioral EC did not predict maladaptive ER (β = .18, p = .733), adaptive ER (β = .61, p = .497), or NSSI (β = .40, p = .618). Examinations of the relations between study variables suggested that self-reported EC may have been a more accurate measure of EC in the current sample. Limitations of the current study may have impacted the ability for the behavioral measure to properly capture the construct of EC. Future research is needed to more fully understand whether a behavioral measure of EC is feasible.

Abstract:
Why has it become so difficult to understand and eventually predict Chinese foreign policy strategy at the military level? In Strategic Studies, and especially in Political Science, experts emphasize the employment of rationality in states‟ foreign policy formulation. However, the international relations reality proves to be, very often, quite different than predicted. In this scientific uncertainty, strategic culture paradigm provides a more comprehensive understanding of states‟ strategic behavior in foreign policy. However, when it comes to China, the current literature on Chinese strategic culture has been adopting a dichotomous approach; that is, trying to demonstrate whether offensiveness or defensiveness constitute the fundamental nature of the Chinese strategic culture. My research goes beyond this debate by looking specifically at the Chinese military strategy per se and, specifically, which strategy really connects to – and therefore defines – the overall Chinese strategic culture. Hence, my research demonstrates how People‟s War doctrine represents a fundamental asset of Chinese strategic culture. To prove this, I will use a three-level analysis which looks at the civil-military relations, strategic design, and tactical dispositions. Moreover, in order to better classify the centrality of people‟s war in Chinese strategic culture, I will provide an extensive historical analysis of the doctrine through four major case studies: the first one deals with the doctrinal formulation occurred during the Warring States period, where ancient strategists started to assemble the embryonic doctrines of what today can be called asymmetric warfare, by looking at the implementation of flexibility and mobility. The second process analyzes the Tang dynasty, which represented an important turning point in Chinese history, paving the way for the creation of the Chinese modern era. The third case study deals with the Maoist Civil War, where people‟s war found its comprehensive definition and application. In conclusion, the last dimension analyzes the evolution of people‟s war doctrine, during the advent of the fifth generation of leadership. This last case study represents an important historical asset because of the radical Chinese military transformation occurring in the last ten years coupled with the international technological developments. During this period, in fact, it becomes central to identify the development of Chinese cyber warfare techniques and the establishment of maritime militia which, I will argue, represent, both doctrinally and technically, an evolution of the people's war doctrine.

Abstract:
This study asks how national power capacity and state structures are reconfigured when faced simultaneously with the power diffusion impact of political globalization---defined as a consensus of ideas and subsequent pressure on states for further democratization and liberalization---and the power maximization demands of internal and external security dilemmas. Hypothesizing a resulting bifurcation of such state structures, this study identifies and explores the transformation dynamics of states being pressured by these two forces through an in-depth analysis of the Turkish case. First, the roots of the two pressures are explored from the late Ottoman and early Republican eras, and a pendulum period is observed, in which the incompatibility of the two drives becomes accepted. As the inevitability of the transformation from more authoritarian to more liberal regimes is realized, a resulting gradual development and institutionalization of a dual state structure into hard and soft agendas and, eventually, realms is shown. Within such a structure, a compromised governance system emerges, in which both a form of democracy and democratization is maintained for legitimacy purposes, and a strong power-holding mechanism, unaccountable to the public, is preserved as an ultimate guard to maintain control over the transformation process. An analysis of changes in the Turkish constitutions is used to reveal traceable reflections of the gradual expansion and consolidation of the hard realm. The actual workings of a dual state structure, revealing the realms' actors, their domestic and external allies, their positions, arguments and rhetoric, is provided by focusing on the clash in the Turkish case over the issue of minority rights in relation with the country's application process for European Union membership. The study identifies the new security dilemma of these countries as being the challenge of securing the inevitable transformation, including the

Tucker, Joanne. "In Name Only? An Exploration of the Operationalization of Empowerment Outcomes in Transformative Participatory Evaluations." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35086.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an exploration of the operationalization of empowerment outcomes in research on transformative participatory evaluations, focusing on the context of international development evaluation. Covering a 15 year period from 1999 and 2014, through the examination of the empirical research literature, the study explores: 1) how empowerment outcomes are measured, 2) the extent to which these outcomes demonstrate empowerment principles, and 3) which factors and conditions appear to enable or detract from the attainment of these outcomes. I found that the current state of the empirical research on transformative participatory evaluation to be largely comprised of reflective case narratives that rely solely on scarcely documented qualitative methods. In general, transformative outcomes do tend to mirror empowerment principles such as ownership, inclusion, democracy, and social justice. Finally, I found that various factors and conditions are critical to the reported attainment of transformative outcomes, particularly in relation to the local program context, for example, reforms in local and international governments that support increased local control over resources and governance, organizational structures and priorities that are congruent with empowerment objectives, and previous experience with empowerment processes. I also highlighted deficiencies in the current empirical research and call on the evaluation community to improve research on transformative approaches to participatory evaluation by suggesting critical areas for practice and writing. These include strengthening research designs and the use of meta-evaluations, further defining and clarifying key terms, and providing rich detail to facilitate further learning in this area.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises three chapters with the patent litigation as a central theme. The first chapter develops a methodology to compare the quality of patent litigation systems in six major economies: United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Korea, China. Quality is defined as whether it provides a fair and just legal environment for nullifying weak patents and adjudicating infringement actions. Ultimately, this study presents heterogeneity in the quality of the sample systems. Litigation systems with rigorous and predictable adjudication have a low risk of opportunistic and anti-competitive filings. In the second paper (Chapter 2), I explore the relationship between technology ownership frag- mentation and the opposition filing in European Patent Office (EPO). I develop a two-stages game, in which opposition can be used for an ex ante negotiation (e.g. licensing). The framework presents that high litigation risk happens under two kinds of conditions: when the ownership to external technologies is highly concentrated, profit dissipation is over the licensing revenue for the potential licensee; when the ownership to external technologies is widely fragmented, transaction cost is high for the entrance. That is, the opposition, replacing the licensing, will be frequently used. To empirically test this hypothesis, we use a data set that covers patent opposition cases during the period 1985-2005, and construct application-based “fragmentation index”. Finally, regression results confirm that opposition likelihood displays an U-shape re- lationship with the number of potential technology suppliers. Besides, the effect of ownership patterns is stronger in discrete product industries. This analysis controls for differences in filing, granted rate and other technological observed characteristics. Results are robust to alternative estimation strategies that account for over-dispersion in the patent counts data and industry heterogeneity. The third paper proposes that system designs influence the incidence of patent litigation risk. I construct three one-to-one matching data sets by total 2748 European patents, which includes 916 patents without any challenge, 916 patents having been challenged in the opposition at the European Patent Office (EPO), and 916 having been challenged in Germany Federal Patent Court (BPatG). the EPO and the BPatG follow different procedures to reexamine, amend or revoke a granted decision. To explore different filing patterns in two litigation systems, I provide a much more rigorous definition to describe patent quality: Novelty, Unique, Impact, which has been operationalized and utilized in the technological radicalness literature. By comparing litigated cases to control groups, I find a high degree of significance between opposition risk and ex ante-identifiable factors - Novelty, while a high degree of significance between invalidation trials and ex post indicator of technological radicalness - Impact. Moreover, I also confirm that the filing in the opposition is less constrained with firm’s patent portfolios and technological conditions.

This dissertation aims to analyse the discriminations, exclusions and violences producted by discourses that constituted the intervention and the operationalization of a no-fly zone (NFZ) authorized in 2011 for the protection of civilians in Libya. The analysis follows from a series of closures and limitations contained in the mainstream and dominant literature on the intervention, which preclude a reading that takes account of the violences producted and legitimated by discourses and practices in the Libyan intervention. In view thereof, the dissertation adopts an understanding that discourses not only construct the representation of the subjects identity, but also create the conditions of possibility to the accomplishment of certain actions. Therefore, in the case of the intervention in Libya, the different discursive articulations present in the academic literature, political discourses, international media, and official documents will be analysed in order to understand how the authorization of a no-fly zone for humanitarian purposes can be read as from a constitutive ambiguity since the same speeches and practices that enabled and legitimated actions for life and the protection of civilians also authorized a set of violences, exclusions and discriminations.

Abstract:
Historically, Robert Merton’s theory of anomie has suffered from harsh criticism on the basis of its weak empirical support and theoretical assumptions. Although, some have made the claim that the failing support is because of inadequate operationalization of Merton’s theory. The purpose of this study is therefore to analyze the operationalization in previous research of Robert Merton’s original theory of anomie, as it was presented in 1938 in Social Structure and Anomie. Firstly, a thorough examination and analysis is conducted on the article Social Structure and Anomie and the theory therein. Secondly, through a systematic review 13 articles that operationalize Merton’s theory were selected and then analyzed based on the core parts of Robert Merton’s paradigm. Results indicate that the culturally defined goals almost exclusively are operationalized as academic and/or economic goals and that the institutionalized means are operationalized in accord with the culturally defined goals. Furthermore, it is found that neither adaptations nor the cultural perspective have any significant place within operationalization.

Prpic, John. "Specifying and Operationalizing an Organizational Theory of Crowdsourcing." Doctoral thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Industriell Ekonomi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-62985.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Despite rapid developments across multiple areas of research and practice, an organizational-level theory of Crowdsourcing has yet to emerge. Objectives: Therefore, this thesis has two major objectives; 1) specify the boundaries, constructs, and relationships of an organizational-level theory of Crowdsourcing, and 2) begin the theoretical validation process by operationalizing the theory for new exploratory, explanatory, and conceptual research. Methods: In respect to the first objective, an organizational-level theory of Crowdsourcing is created through inductive processes based upon observations of the real-world, and the extant organizational literature. In respect to the second objective, a mixed-methods research design is implemented to present three separate studies that use the theoretical perspective as a lens to operationalize new exploratory, explanatory, and conceptual Crowdsourcing research. Results: The Crowd Capital perspective is introduced, and defines three new constructs for the Crowdsourcing research; Dispersed Knowledge, Crowd Capability, and Crowd Capital. Crowd Capital theory is shown to be a valid theoretical contribution in the management research by illustrating the perspective’s incremental originality and scientific utility. Conclusion: The thesis develops and validates an organizational-level theory explaining how and why organizations implement Crowdsourcing, and through the exploratory and explanatory operationalizations of the Crowd Capital perspective, this work contributes to the empirical knowledge-base in the Crowdsourcing research. Further, this thesis contributes methodologically by illustrating and implementing a mixed-methods research design for theory validation in the Crowdsourcing research, while also supplying managers and executives with detailed guidance on the trade-offs inherent to the different modalities of Crowdsourcing. Thesis Organization: This thesis is organized in a monograph format comprised of eight chapters; 1) Introduction, 2) Literature review, 3) Theoretical model, 4) Methodology, 5) Exploratory research, 6) Explanatory research, 7) Conceptual research, and 8) Conclusion. As an outcome of this thesis, three journal articles and five conference proceedings have been accepted in peer-reviewed outlets1, and the author has been awarded a mini-track about Crowdsourcing at one of the most prestigious conferences in the field.
This work had as intention to carry through an analysis of the operation of the Port of Rio Grande, through the technique of Simulation, with the aid of software “Arena”. The study was made for the public terminal called Novo Porto and the terminals of private initiative of Superporto, which are: Bianchini, Bunge Alimentos, Copesul, Petrobrás, Tecon, Tergrasa, Termasa and Trevo Operadora. In the terminals that possess a mooring place more than, two analyses had been effected: for the complete system, and each cradle separately. This paper still presented as objective, to compare the results gotten for the technique of Theory of Lines with the technique of Simulation, which are used inmodeling of systems. For such, the results supplied for Duarte had been used (2007), that in its master’s paper, carried through the operational analysis of the Port of Rio Grande, through the method of Theory of Lines. First, the data of movement of ships of the port had been inquired, during the years of 2004, 2005 and 2006, which had been supplied by theSupervision of the Port of Rio Grande (SUPRG). After that, the intervals between the arrivals of ships, and the times of each ttendance had been analyzed, with intention to represent these data through one definitive distribution statistics. Specifically, for the Tecon terminal, monthlyanalyses of the processes of arrived and attendance had been carried through, with the purpose esteem the demand for the next years, therefore this terminal will start to operate with plus a cradle of mooring. Later, simulation flowcharts had been constructed, for each situation, in accordance with the number of mooring places, where the correct statistical values that had represented the data of fond and of attendance had been applied. For each simulation, the program “Arena” supplied innumerable resulted, between them, the index of congestion. As one of the main results, one evidenced that the Tecon terminal presented considerable reductions in congestion terms, in the simulations carried through for the year of 2009, where this terminal will count on plus a mooring place.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to unpack the complexity of trajectories of land use change in semiarid Mediterranean agro-ecosystems - illustrated using findings from the Torrealvilla catchment in south-eastern Spain. The research looks at multiple dimensions of land use change and addresses the past, present, and future . It comprises of three key stages. Stage 1 quantifies land use change between 1956 and 2008, assesses the impacts on landscape fragmentation, and identifies important drivers of the detected changes. Stage 2 examines the linkage between farmer heterogeneity and the diversity of agricultural land uses in the studied landscape by developing a typology of farmers. It also investigates how farmers respond to future changes that potentially affect their farming and describes potential future trajectories of agriculture in the area and the implications for agro-ecosystem services provision. Stage 3 models the future trajectories of land use change for the studied landscape using two different approaches: Cellular Automata (CA) and Agent-Based scenario analysis. The research shows that over the past five decades the catchment has undergone significant changes with pronounced effects on landscape configuration. The changes involved three major trajectories (forest expansion, abandonment of rain-fed farming, and intensification) and were attributable to various interacting biophysical and socioeconomic drivers. The study differentiates six types of farmers according to the characteristics of their households and of their farm management. Different types of farmers are expected to pursue different land use directions with important impacts on future provision of agro-ecosystem services. Results from the final stage highlight a diverging future . "'To illustrate, while CA projection suggests scope for further expansion of irrigated farming, the agent-based scenario analysis indicates the opposite. Overall the thesis confirms that land use changes in Mediterranean agro-ecosystems are indeed complex entailing multiple, contrasting, and perhaps competing trajectories and are the manifestation of the interacting effects of various types of drivers. The thesis highlights conceptual and practical challenges in undertaking an integrated evaluation of land use change complexity. Future policy making should consider the various factors that are jointly shaping agricultural land use trajectories.

Abstract:
Contemporary sustainability science and practice must embrace the complexity of social-ecological systems and capitalize on the lessons learned from the recent theoretical and applied advances made in various disciplines. This can be accomplished in particular by incorporating this extensive knowledge into management and decision making through integrative and operational frameworks. Based on contrasting but complementary case studies (coral reef fishery in Moorea, French Polynesia; artisanal benthic fishery in Chile and global food systems), and drawing from the recent development in social-ecological science, we extended the use of the social-ecological vulnerability framework by (1) mapping human-nature dependencies in the context of resource-user interactions, (2) integrating the temporal dimension, (3) accounting for multiple drivers of change and (4) their impact on diverse entities of the system considered. This interdisciplinary work provided the foundation to represent key linkages in social-ecological systems, understand the underlying sources of unsustainability, and address these through a set of targeted and context-grounded management interventions and policy actions. This thesis provides a new perspective on human-nature linkages and has a number practical implications for managers, conservation planners, and policy-makers that seek to incorporate a social-ecological perspective to tackle sustainability issues from local to global scales

Full text
Abstract:
Corporate sustainable development is placed between simplified interpretations and an overabundance of complexity and requirements that hampers implementation. Stakeholder Relations Management is one approach for the operationalization of sustainable development on the corporate level, which enables the inclusion of aspects of sustainability into corporate decision-making in a pragmatic way. However, stakeholder pressure and economic constraints lead companies to adopt only a small segment of the concept of sustainable development. Therefore, a referential framework is needed in order to regard corporate initiatives within the wider context of sustainable development on the theoretical level. The framework of sustainable development presented here, which was developed during a research project funded by the "Austrian Science Fund", takes the wide range of notions of sustainable development into account. Like a map, the framework depicts approaches to sustainable development and provides an overview of the aspects of sustainable development (scope) as well as the different levels of complexity that are associated therewith (depth). This framework is conceived as a tool to classify approaches to sustainable development in a wider context. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
The notion of Queensland as a ‘Smart State’ is the Queensland Beattie Government’s response to global conditions that require a new type of worker and citizen for a new knowledge economy. The role of education in the success of the ‘Smart State’ is clearly outlined in the Queensland Government’s vision statements and policies, identifying teachers as a key factor in the production of this new type of worker and citizen. In this study I explore the relationship between Queensland’s Smart State policy and the daily practices of teachers as they are implicated in the building of a ‘Smart State’. The study takes place during what is unquestionably the largest and most comprehensive reform effort to be imposed on Queensland schools and teachers, under the auspices of a ‘Smart State’. The research includes policy analysis of two key Smart State documents, and fieldwork involving semi-structured interviews, observations and artefact collection of the work of two primary school teachers. Using Fairclough’s theories regarding the relationship between discourse and social change, it is possible to show how changes occurring in contemporary organisations are related to changes in discourse, in particular, those surrounding the discourses of a ‘knowledge economy’ or ‘globalisation’. The ‘Smart State’ is conceptualised in this study as regimes of discourses that may produce new practices and new ways of acting and being (Fairclough, 2001a). The interdiscursive, linguistic and semiotic strategies used in Smart State policy are analysed to show how this discourse is emerging into a hegemonic position, while identifying the dominant discourses reiterated in the policy as necessary skills for a new type of worker. These discourses are mapped onto those identified through the fieldwork of teachers’ daily work practices to determine if Smart State discourses are becoming apparent in teachers’ work. This study is significant because it makes visible the current relationship between the discourses of the ‘Smart State’ and teachers’ daily work. In this current climate of rapid change and economic survival it is important that the operationalization of a ‘Smart State’ can be attributed to teachers’ work as new ways of acting and interacting become a part of their daily practices.

Abstract:

Environmental goals are commonly set to guide work towards ecological sustainability. The aim of this thesis is to develop a precise terminology for the description of goals in terms of properties that are important in their practical use as decision-guides and to illustrate how it can be used in evaluations of environmental policy.

Essay I (written together with Sven Ove Hansson) identifies a set of rationality criteria for individual goals and discusses them in relation to the typical function of goals. For a goal to perform its typical function, i.e., to guide and induce action, it must be precise, evaluable, approachable (attainable), and motivating.

Essay II argues that for a goal system to be rational it must not only satisfy the criteria identified in Essay I but should also be coherent. The coherence of a goal system is made up of the relations that hold among the goals, most notably relations of support and conflict, but possibly also relations of operationalization. A major part of the essay consists in a conceptual analysis of the three relations.

Essay III contains an investigation into the rationality of five Swedish environmental objectives through an application of the rationality criteria identified in Essays I-II. The paper draws the conclusion that the objectives are not sufficiently rational according to the suggested criteria. It also briefly points at some of the difficulties that are associated with the use of goals in environmental policy and managemen

Doney, Jonathan. "'That would be an Ecumenical matter' : contextualizing the adoption of the study of world religions in English religious education using 'statement archaeology', a systematic operationalization of Foucault's historical method." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18518.

Full text
Abstract:
It is claimed that during the 1960s and 1970s a new chapter in the history of English Religious Education (hereafter RE) began. Christian Confessionalism, whereby children were introduced to, nurtured in, and encouraged to adopt, the Christian faith, was swept aside and replaced by a non-confessional, phenomenological, multi-faith model, in which children were introduced to a variety of World Religions, with the aim that they would become more understanding of and tolerant towards others. Subsequently the study of World Religions (hereafter SWR) was adopted at all phases of the school system. Whilst this transition has been subjected to a wealth of historical analysis, existing accounts concentrate on narrative reconstructions of what happened, rather than investigating the complex interaction of discourses that created circumstances in which the change became possible. By framing analysis within national boundaries these reconstructions also overlook supranational influences. Thus, the supranational ecumenical movement (concerned with achieving greater unity and co-operation between denominationally separated Christian groups) has hitherto been largely overlooked. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s historical methods, I have developed a critical methodology, which examines how certain practices become possible. This method, Statement Archaeology, follows Foucault in emphasizing ‘discontinuities’, ‘statements’, and the search for the ‘relative beginnings’ of particular practices. Deploying the method entailed a detailed forensic exploration of relevant primary, unutilized, sources drawn from relevant domains of ecumenical discourses at both supranational (World Council of Churches) and national (British Council of Churches) levels. These sources were identified by tracing the provenance, and origin, of ecumenical statements repeated within Schools Council Working Paper 36 (1971). A ‘compound’ framework of understanding, combining the notions of Governmentality and Normalization, has been used. The thesis presents a number of original contributions to knowledge. By focusing on the multiple intersections of supranational and national domains of ecumenical discourse, Statement Archaeology reveals a much greater level of complexity than has hitherto been described and exposes a more nuanced understanding of how it became possible for SWR to be adopted, suggesting that the ‘relative beginnings’ of the practice are located—to some extent—in national ecumenical discourses. Further, supranational issues that affected these processes are unearthed, and motivations behind them are exposed, thus highlighting the importance of incorporating ecumenical discourses into the historiography of RE. The research also problematizes some assertions that have become characteristic of the existing historical narrative. Amongst other things, it disputes the existing positioning of Working Paper 36, highlights the problematic positioning of ‘mass immigration’ as a causal factor in adoption of SWR, and exposes a complexity of terminology, none of which appear to have been examined previously. These findings have application both in England and elsewhere, and are briefly discussed in relation to two other national contexts where approaches akin to SWR have been adopted. Finally, the limitations of the study are discussed and recommendations made for further work.

The general hypothesis of this research is centered on the reflections about the possibility of operationalizing the idea of transgression as a functional concept for the studies of discourse. This study is based on a Foucauldian approach to discourse, inscribing itself in a philosophical position, much more than in a theory or method. At first, we try to think of transgression within the Foucauldian approach, from the crossings that the notions of event, truth, power, apparatus (dispositif) and certain practice of analysis of statements promote within the limits of an academic practice based on positivist procedures which upholds the notions of tradition, progress, exclusion from the heterogeneous, the ultimate truth, and finally, the homogenization of knowledge and practices. Simultaneously, I tried to highlight the points in which the Foucauldian notions contribute to illuminate conceptual and operational formulations of the idea of transgression. This research assumes an epistemological posture, because it aims to think the construction of a system of conceptual formation, however, because it is inscribed in the field of discursive studies, it sought to illustrate this construction from specific analysis of dictionary entries, journalistic news, the practice of pixação and two literary works by the Portuguese author José Saramago: The Gospel According to Jesus Christ and Cain. The analysis of these works sought to mark the singularity of the operation of transgression in literary discourse, considering the procedure of literary re-reading of history as a mechanism of transgression. Therefore, starting with Foucault's point of view on transgression in a text of 1963, we identify, based on the discursive analysis carried out, seven conceptual points for the idea of transgression, namely: (1) "transgression is a gesture concerning the limit "(FOUCAULT, 2006a); (2) transgression is of the order of the event; (3) transgression is a discussion about truth; (4) transgression is a discursive investment; (5) transgression is a discursive machine that moves the relevance of tradition; (6) transgression is a strategy of resistance; (7) transgression is one of constituents of an apparatus (dispositif). Finally, this research sought to cover some different fields of knowledge, discourse, and practices to reflect on transgression and viability, even the need for its operationalization to analyze discourses.

"The operationalization of Adultcentrism and Black Pedagogy constructs to promote personal well-being in adult-child relationship: A first application in the context of teacher-student relationship and increase of Specific Learning Disorder diagnoses." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Bergamo, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10446/128556.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation advances proposals of operationalization for the concepts of Black Pedagogy (Miller, 1980; Perticari, 2016; Rutschky, 1977, 2015) and Adultcentrism (Goode, 1986; Petr, 1992; Furioso, 2000; Mackay, 1973, 2003; Biancardi, 2002; Foti, 2004). The former is meant as a set of educational and disciplinary practices assimilable into those that nowadays are included in the frame of physical and psychological maltreatment, the latter refers instead to a paradigm of thought, prevailing within our social system, which would lead to provide inadequate or distorted responses to children’s needs (Furioso, 2000). The reflection on a possible legacy deriving from such educational forma mentis is discussed in the light of what is commonly deemed in society as included in the ius corrigendi justification in relation to the “Abuse of means of correction or discipline” (Art. 571, I.P.C.). A third measurement instrument has been developed (“Representations and Attitudes towards SLD diagnoses questionnaire” - RADSA) in order to implement a research representing the first application of Adultcentrism and Black Pedagogy scales in the context of teacher-student relationship and of the phenomenon of SLD diagnoses increase. Four studies are therefore included in the present work: three validation studies of the new instruments and one main study involving the participation of 294 Italian primary school teachers belonging to the Territorial Area of Bergamo. Results are in line with the importance, highlighted in the literature, of making an effort in recognizing the partiality of the adultcentric perspective since our biased understanding of adult-child relationship appears to prevent the acknowledgement of the deeply reciprocal and bilateral qualities of the encounter between those that can be seen as two cultures: the one of adults and the one of children. Moreover, it has been found that Adultcentrism significantly explains 30.4% of the variance in Black Pedagogy scores, thus providing the well-founded impression that an adultcentric perspective risks to deviate towards detrimental educational and disciplinary practices. Implications for teachers’ role in the context of the always increasing number of SLD diagnoses in our territory are also discussed. One of the most important suggestions deriving from the presented results is that it seems more functional to work on the level of values, beliefs, and objectives connected to child-rearing, disciplinary and educational practices rather than intervening directly on practical methods in order to modify them. The possible applications of Adultcentrism and Black Pedagogy scales could range from research fields of pedagogy, education, parenting, child advocacy to social-juridical psychology.
