Abstract:
Abstract Background and Objectives We examined the validity of 5 successful aging (SA) operationalizations that assessed different facets of the SA construct (cognitive and physical health and disability; well-being; social engagement). Research Design and Methods A total of 2,478 participants (mean age = 82.5 years, standard deviation [SD] = 3.47) were studied. We used confirmatory factor analysis to investigate the relationships between facets and to determine the convergent validity as well as short-term (1.5 years) and long-term (4.5 years) predictive validity of the 5 SA operationalizations for measures of quality of life (QoL) and objective health outcomes. Results A general SA operationalization that included all SA facets but also allowed differences between them showed the best model fit and construct validity. A biomedical operationalization of SA that excluded either the well-being or the social engagement facet showed lower convergent and predictive validity for subjective measures (e.g., QoL) but higher associations with objective measures (e.g., health). A purely psychosocial SA operationalization that excluded the physiological facet did not allow good prediction of objective health outcomes. Discussion and Implications Our results suggest that a well-balanced SA operationalization should include measures assessing health, disability, well-being, and social engagement.

Abstract:
Purpose: This paper presents an operationalization framework that merges the concepts of coopetition and open strategy through the lenses of managerial dilemmas. Although both merged concepts have gained recent and increasing attention, they need sound operationalization, including operationalization when being blended. Therefore, the paper focuses on operationalizing and measuring strategic dilemmas of coopetition implemented as an open strategy. By doing so, the paper addresses the needs for developing measures and scales to allow for more detailed investigation and verification of the conceptual foundations of open strategy dimensions and accompanying tensions and paradoxes of coopetition. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is conceptual. Our proposition for operationalization builds on previously developed conceptualizations of strategic dilemmas and strategic choices considered. Findings: As the main contribution, this paper offers comprehensive operationalizations for seven strategic dilemmas faced by coopetitors following an open approach to strategy implementation. Research limitations/implications: The paper draws managers’ attention to the multidimensional perception of strategic dilemmas faced when cooperating with competitors and provides a way to analyze the profile of openness, which can be used to evaluate a firm’s openness as well as to predict coopetition longevity. Originality/value: The contribution of our conceptual framework is twofold as we advance the concept of merging coopetition with an open strategy using the lenses of managerial dilemmas that are commonly faced in both conceptions.

Abstract:
Abstract A commonly used concept in linguistics is salience. Oftentimes it is used without definition, and the meaning of the concept is repeatedly assumed to be self-explanatory. The definitions that are provided may vary greatly from one operationalization of salience to the next. In order to find out whether it is possible to postulate an overarching working definition of linguistic salience that subsumes usage across linguistic subdomains, we review these different operationalizations of linguistic salience. This article focuses on salience in sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, second-language acquisition (SLA), and semantics. In this article, we give an overview of how these fields operationalize salience. Finally, we discuss correlations and contradictions between the different operationalizations.

Abstract:
This article discusses the significance of social capital in Bourdieu-inspired analyses of contemporary South-East European societies. We first recapitulate Bourdieu?s theorization of social capital, emphasizing that it allows different operationalizations expressly because of its rather abstract theoretical character. Following that, we explain what is meant by ?South- East European societies? and that their inequality-generating mechanisms are largely based on social closure. In the central part of the article, we comment on some attempts at operationalization of social capital in the SEE region. While we also discuss two cases of eclectically mixing Lin?s operationalization with Bourdieusian concepts, at the center of our attention is the elaboration of Bourdieu?s theorization of social capital put forward by the Serbian sociologist Predrag Cveticanin. The relevance of his concepts of ?social capital of solidarity? and ?social capital of informal connections? for the study of class relations in post-socialist societies in South-East Europe highlights the advantages of a consistent application of the Bourdieusian framework in a contemporary (post-Bourdieusian) context.

Abstract:
Introduction: The operationalization of nursing-sensitive performance measures has been highly variable. It results in measures that are sometimes suboptimal and difficult for managers and nurses to access. The objective is to propose a rigorous method for operationalizing nurse-sensitive performance measures based on routine data. Source of Information: The primary source of information for this article is an operationalization method adapted from a reporting guide and performance measure evaluation instrument. It includes 7 processes and 33 interrelated quality attributes. The application of this operationalization method was successfully tested in a university hospital. Discussion: Operationalization of nursing-sensitive performance measures is a complex process. This method is an original proposal that allows for the justification and argumentation of the choices made. We discuss how this method is a response to 3 methodological issues: (1) heterogeneous and poorly detailed operationalization methods; (2) critical attributes (e.g., relevance, scientific validity, feasibility) that lack consensus and (3) heterogeneous data architecture models. Implication and conclusion: This operationalization method provides a systematic and transparent approach to generating nursing-sensitive performance measures from routine data. It could improve their operationalization, facilitate their understanding and evaluation.

Abstract:
Current discussions on improving the reproducibility of science often revolve around statistical innovations. However, equally important for improving methodological rigour is a valid operationalization of phenomena. Operationalization is the process of translating theoretical constructs into measurable laboratory quantities. Thus, the validity of operationalization is central for the quality of empirical studies. But do differences in the validity of operationalization affect the way scientists evaluate scientific literature? To investigate this, we manipulated the strength of operationalization of three published studies and sent them to researchers via email. In the first task, researchers were presented with a summary of the Method and Result section from one of the studies and were asked to guess the hypothesis that was investigated via a multiple-choice questionnaire. In a second task, researchers were asked to rate the perceived quality of the study. Our results show that (1) researchers are better at inferring the underlying research question from empirical results if the operationalization is more valid, but (2) the different validity is only to some extent reflected in a judgement of the study's quality. These results combined give partial corroboration to the notion that researchers’ evaluations of research results are not affected by operationalization validity.

Abstract:
This paper presents a brief review of some formal approaches to the modeling of unconscious phenomena. These models allow for the operationalization of the concept of psychodynamic unconscious towards a possible inclusion in the fields of Cognitive Informatics and Cognitive Computing. In particular this paper presents the conceptualization proposed by Ignacio Matte Blanco of the functioning of conscious and unconscious thinking. In his original view the two ways of thinking are conceived as two distinct logics, “symmetrical” and “asymmetrical” logics. In this study the fundamentals of his concepts are identified and re-elaborated in a more formal way, with the aim of developing an operational and dynamic functional structure that evolves over time and that includes the affective value of objects. On this basis a computational implementation of the conscious–unconscious interaction that employs Learning Classifier Systems (LCS) is put forward.

Abstract:
This study seeks to replicate and extend Roksa and Potter's (2011) analysis of the association between intergenerational family background and academic outcomes by utilizing the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 to examine alternative methods for operationalizing maternal educational background. Results indicate a positive association between maternal upward mobility and adolescent academic achievement. Measures of mobility affect adolescent achievement even when controlling for both mother's and maternal grandmother's educational attainment. Future research should examine the differential impact of extreme mobility, specifically downward mobility, on adolescent academic outcomes.

Bedford, Lee. "An Alternative Operationalization of Betrayal Trauma using Perceived Betrayal." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2019. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1609082/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many identified factors that correlate with whether an individual experiences adverse symptoms following a traumatic event. Research indicates that betrayal, where the victim is betrayed by another individual, may be one of these factors. Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT) posits that betrayal during trauma increases the likelihood of developing adverse psychological symptoms. BTT objectively dichotomizes traumas as high betrayal or low betrayal traumas based on details of the event. Though literature finds those who experience high betrayals experience more severe symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and dissociation than those who experience low betrayals, this objective classification is limited as it is based solely on the circumstances of the trauma and does not give the victim the option of indicating whether they felt betrayed. We believe perceptions of betrayal, whether the event meets the objective criteria of betrayal put forth by BTT or not, is an important predictor of trauma-related outcomes. This study (N = 244) found that perceived betrayal predicts symptoms of PTSD and depression independently, as well as when controlling for objective betrayal, dependence on the perpetrator, event centrality, anxiety, and dissociation. These findings indicate perceived betrayal is a unique construct that should be included in the operationalization of betrayal in future research. Objective betrayal is limited in that it is a permanent classification based on the circumstances of the traumatic event. Perceived betrayal, however, can be addressed and reduced by skilled clinicians and betrayal-specific treatments, thus reducing the effect betrayal has on trauma-related outcomes.

Abstract:
Individuals vary in the level of their mental presence during interactions; some individuals are mentally present with others, while others are mired in their thoughts and emotions. Scholarly work on this area is limited, and we know very little about why some individuals display mental presence better than others. In this dissertation, I explore the concept through a series of three essays. In the first essay, I define relational mindfulness as the ability to be mentally present with others. Further, I propose that relational mindfulness has three essential features: others' focus, thought-switching, and emotional acceptance. I operationalize the scale to measure relational mindfulness and investigate its nomological network by correlating it with different constructs. Data from four different samples provide support for the three-factor structure of relational mindfulness and provide support for the relationship of relational mindfulness with related constructs. In the second essay, I explore the relevance of relational mindfulness for front-line employees by investigating the two pathways through which relational mindfulness can reduce fatigue of front-line employees. In the first pathway, I posited that relational mindfulness would decrease the intensity of surface acting of employees when their customers mistreat them, and thus reduce fatigue of employees. In the second pathway, I posited that relational mindfulness would increase the frequency of positive interactions between employees and customers, and thereby decrease fatigue experienced by employees. I tested the model by conducting two different studies. Overall, the results provided support for the posited hypotheses. In the third essay, I tested whether relational mindfulness can be enhanced through a mindfulness meditation by conducting a quasi-experimental study. Two groups; experimental and comparison groups participated in the pre-test, post-test surveys, and weekly surveys during the experiment. The results suggested that participants in both groups increased their relational mindfulness over time and there was no evidence that individuals in the mindfulness group differed from the comparison group.

Abstract:
Competitive advantage (CA) is an intuitively evident concept which has been widely used in theoretical research in strategy. But CA's diffuse image and its dynamic nature make it a difficult concept to apply. The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive (or macro) CA construct capable of being applied in an empirical manner across a broad spectrum of business situations. This objective required both an adequate grounding of the CA concept within its nomological- net of theories and a new operationalization approach.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility, focusing on aspects of relationships in the supply chain and their impact on manufacturing flexibility. The research involves four manufacturing companies for studying the influence of four aspects of buyer-supplier relationship - trust/commitment, information sharing, supplier development and joint product development - on three external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility - mix, new products and volume. The study also observes the generalized effects of these relationships on manufacturing performance and on the levels of manufacturing flexibility shown by the companies studied. The buyer-supplier relationships are deeply analyzed and their general characteristics and effects on the operationalization of manufacturing flexibility are presented. In addition, the analysis of scope and achievability factors indicated the presence of little explored flexible resources in the companies studied. Finding ways for operationalizing flexibility must be seen as a priority question to obtain competitive advantage in manufacturing systems. This work shows how the relationships between the buyer and supplier can influence several external dimensions of manufacturing flexibility and, consequently, manufacturing performance.

Cacciotti, Gabriella. "Fear of failure in entrepreneurship : a review, reconceptualization and operationalization." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/73258/.

Full text
Abstract:
In entrepreneurship, the fear of failure has been identified as a significant barrier to entrepreneurial activity. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world's largest study of entrepreneurial activity, defines the fear of failure as a strong inhibitor for seizing opportunities and transforming entrepreneurial intentions into entrepreneurial actions. Contrary to entrepreneurship research, psychological theory offers a counterintuitive prediction of the outcomes of fear of failure. While early achievement theories argued that fear of failure inhibits behavior, later psychological research has found fear of failure to be dualistic in nature, sometimes motivating individuals to act while at other times inhibiting such action. Although there is no unified theory on fear of failure within the psychology literature, the theoretical background of this construct in entrepreneurship appears even more fragmented. An examination of the existing entrepreneurship literature on fear of failure reveals that scholars have used different definitions and measures to explain this phenomenon and investigate its effects on entrepreneurial behavior. Because these measures refer to a different nature of the fear of failure construct, it is very unlikely that they converge to capture the same phenomenon. Therefore, a clear understanding of the nature and effects of fear of failure in entrepreneurship is needed. In this respect, this thesis addresses the research question of how fear of failure can be defined and measured within the entrepreneurial process. Three articles have been developed to answer this research question. In Article 1, the conceptual issues associated with the current status of the literature on fear of failure in entrepreneurship and the characteristics of the entrepreneurial setting that shape the fear of failure experience are discussed. Building on these conceptual observations, Article 2 adopts a qualitative approach to investigate the experience of fear of failure antecedent and concurrent to the entrepreneurial process. Sixty-five entrepreneurs and potential entrepreneurs have been interviewed to show that fear of failure can be defined as a complex combination of cognition, affect, and behavior. Finally, in Article 3 four studies are conducted to develop and validate a new measure of entrepreneurial fear of failure. Findings from these three articles shed light on the fear of failure construct in entrepreneurship, which emerged as a context-sensitive phenomenon.

Larsen, Kathryn A. "The Operationalization of the Theoretical Antecedents of Collective Teacher Efficacy." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6759.

Full text
Abstract:
Much research on collective teacher efficacy focuses on outcomes, mainly the benefits to students. However, there is no research that explores how teacher teams enact the theoretical antecedents to collective efficacy set out by Bandura (1977, 1993), namely vicarious learning, verbal persuasion, psychological arousal, and mastery experiences, to make such achievements possible. This qualitative study explores the experiences of two teams of secondary language arts teachers who were collectively efficacious and how they operationalized Bandura's theoretical antecedents of collective teacher efficacy in becoming so. After verification of levels of personal and collective efficacy, team interviews were held specifically addressing the implementation of the four antecedents. Interview transcripts were coded and restoried, highlighting critical incidents in the process of becoming collectively efficacious. The findings for these two teams show an incomplete understanding of collective efficacy. It is often thought that enacting the four antecedents will result in a collectively efficacious team; however, my study demonstrates that teachers must become effective teacher teams before they could develop collective teacher efficacy. My findings indicate that relationships among team members are crucial for successful implementation of other elements. Implications for administrators revolve around their important role in helping teachers develop collegial relationships with each other. Team relationships can also have a significant impact on novice teachers when proper mentoring and support are provided.

Abstract:
Teaching a new topic is seldom limited to mere verbal communication – information presented through the visual-iconic code often sustains the spoken word. Every teacher possesses a whole arsenal of schemes, tables, graphs, sketches, photos, pictures etc. Some of these will be coming from textbooks and other didactic auxiliaries, while others more recently originate from whatever had been generously placed on the Internet. The latter is a most accessible source, where the students may both visualise a variety of graphic organisers and exercise different ways of applying them in their own learning. The diversity of graphic forms in circulation pertains not so much to the specific features of the given school subject as to procedural knowledge. Their number is practically endless. The informational explosion, which brought to the educational domain techniques originally intended for management, has thus augmented the teaching-learning-assessing set of tools, allowing the teacher to explore them and use them to facilitate the development of students’ multiple intelligences and to form their metacognition skills. However, normative acts are yet to stipulate a mandatory assimilation of a minimum of graphic forms, despite them having already taken root in the current education system. This omission excludes a priory the possibility of referring to them in any form of centrally-administered summative or certification assessment.

Harangozó, Dániel. A Balancing Act? Serbia’s Military Neutrality: Concept and Implementation. Külügyi és Külgazdasági Intézet, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.47683/kkielemzesek.ke-2021.69.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of present study is to provide a concise review of Serbia’s military neutrality, both the conditions of its “genesis” in 2007 and its “operationalization” in form of strategic documents and military cooperation during the period of Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) government (2012-2021), with special emphasis on the presidency of Aleksandar Vučić (2017-2021). The paper concluded that the “genesis” and maintenance of Serbian neutrality is due to both internal political considerations, as well as Serbian diplomatic exigencies with regards to the unresolved status of Kosovo. The long-term sustainability of Serbian neutrality policy, however, cannot be taken for granted. The delicate „balancing act” between the West, Russia, and increasingly, China, might not be sustainable in the future if relations between the West (and in particular, the EU) and China or Russia, deteriorate further, or when Serbia’s EU accession process enters its „final stretch”.

Full text
Abstract:
This SIPRI Research Policy Paper identifies European Union (EU) member states’ efforts to address climate-related security risks in the short to medium term and suggests entry points for further action. Even countries making visible attempts to mainstream the linkages between climate and security are falling short of pursuing a comprehensive approach. Among the ongoing initiatives that might bear fruit in one to three years are: appointing climate security advisers; climate proofing peacebuilding and conflict proofing climate action; investing in early warning and risk mapping; reassessing climate financing and development aid; and building up the operational resilience of the military. Strengthening such efforts would involve: incorporating climate insecurity into foreign and security policy dialogues; increasing conflict-sensitive climate adaptation finance; sensitization to climate change and conflict; and improving the operationalization of early warning. To remain credible, EU member states must advance their climate security initiatives and close the gap between rhetoric and practice.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the potential for donor governments and institutions to support the operationalization of the humanitarian, development and peacebuilding (HDP) nexus to respond to the food insecurity crisis in South Sudan and the challenges this presents. South Sudan faces one of the worst hunger crises in the world. Violent conflict, climate shocks and widespread economic crisis have left 70 per cent of the population severely food insecure. Donors have provided nearly $13 billion in official development assistance (ODA) since the country’s independence in 2011, of which a large proportion has been allocated to the food security sector, but the number of food insecure people is higher than ever. Despite commitments to work across the HDP nexus, donor financing remains largely siloed in humanitarian, development and peacebuilding funding streams. Almost all the ODA provided is earmarked, which prevents much-needed collaboration among implementing actors and limits the ability to pool resources and adapt to ever-changing conflict and peacebuilding dynamics.

Full text
Abstract:
Most of the world’s remaining tropical forests lie in areas that are customarily managed and/or legally owned by Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In the context of climate change and global efforts to protect and enhance the capacity of forests to capture and store greenhouse gas emissions, the question of who owns the trees and the carbon stored therein is paramount. Clarifying this question is crucial, both for the future of the planet, and for up to 1.7 billion people worldwide who rely on forests for their livelihoods. This brief presents a review of the nominal progress made in the national-level laws and regulations that govern the carbon trade and define the rights of parties —across a sample of 24 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. These countries collectively hold more than 50 percent of global tropical and subtropical forests. This brief also examines the design and establishment of safeguard mechanisms concerning benefit sharing, providing redress and resolution to disputes related to carbon-based schemes, and the operationalization of carbon registries for each of these countries.
