Abstract:
The function of regenerators is to use the thermal energy of the waste gases to preheat the combustion air and thereby provide better heat transfer via a high flame temperature. Satisfactory furnace operation can only be achieved if the regenerator chambers are in good condition. Today, environmental issues play a major role in the selection of regenerators and checkers refractories. The impact on the environment has been studied on 35 side-fired flat glass furnaces. Firstly, we will describe in this paper the issues raised by increased carry over and CO content observed in various furnaces with different types of checker packing such as basket weaves, box blocks and cruciforms . Secondly, we will talk about how the impact on health and waste/recycling solutions is analyzed and should be taken into consideration before ordering refractories. Finally, some new materials are now appearing on the market. The fact that China dominates magnesia production (51% of the world production) entails the rise of new raw material sources for the basic refractories used for checker bricks. Besides that, the refractories suppliers are continuously improving their materials to offer glassmakers new solutions to overcome the actual issues in the regenerators. These new sources of materials have been analyzed in R&D and are now considered as potential solutions which need further testing under industrial conditions.

Abstract:
Impulse drying technology can be applied to most primary and mixed primary/secondary cakes from pulp and paper operations. Results from the first two onsite trials illustrate some of the factors that govern dewatering including belt porosity, roll temperature, pressure, belt cleaning, ash content, sludge feed delivery, and sludge structure and type. Roll sticking is one of the most important factors that govern the application of the technology. The potential for roll sticking cannot presently be evaluated a priori. Refinements made in the unit as a result of these trials are discussed.

Abstract:
This is a study of the organisational change to self-managed team working in UK-based manufacturing organisations. There are few models to guide research into the organisational change to team working and this study focuses on the under-researched area of the implementation process. Descriptions of team development models imply a smooth, linear change process. Yet this strategic change involves major restructuring at an operational level and in reality is a complex and political transition process that unfolds in unpredictable directions. This research proposes a processual framework to explore team development and to increase understanding of the ways in which this transition is shaped at critical junctures. This research was based on case study data collected over periods of up to five years in four brownfield, manufacturing organisations. This data provided detailed illustrations of the major challenges facing organisations in the transition to self-management. Specifically, the research findings indicated that the change to self-managed team working was an unfolding, non-linear process and that its success was shaped not only by the congruence between team design and production setting, but also by the congruence between new work structures and supporting organisational arrangements. Senior management commitment was pivotal to the success of the change process, as were clear definitions of operational roles and required actions and behaviours. Finally, the research indicated the importance of key players adopting appropriate change-driver roles and of paying attention to political tensions and perceived threats associated with changes to traditional role demarcations. This research increases understanding of the implementation and development of self managed work teams at an operational level and the results may be of considerable practical use for organisations in determining their strategies for organisational change and development.

As the retail industry grows more popular, ABCD, a world-class electronic commerce (e-commerce) business, is increasingly building new Fulfillment Centers (FCs) to support this rapid demand growth. It is integral for ABCD to validate the installation quality and functionality of Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in these newly built FCs so operations can avoid errors. To achieve this objective, ABCD introduced the Installation and Operational Qualification (IOQ) process in late 2014. While the IOQ process reduces early operational failures, it does not completely eliminate them. Inadequate IOQ and tighter installation timelines are leading to degraded installation quality, resulting in operational issues and costs for ABCD. As the FC network continues to grow, there is a need to improve installation quality to reduce early operational issues and enhance the FC start-up experience.
This project is a part of the ABCD Operation Engineering teams' effort to improve the existing IOQ process and the FC start-up experience. This initiative consists of three main phases. The first phase - the research phase - is dedicated to understanding the current processes and problem statement. It also includes a study of available data sources to discover failure patterns across different FCs. The second phase involves developing analytical frameworks and machine-learning models to uncover the most problematic equipment in the FC. The third phase focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the current IOQ process based on Phase 1 and 2 findings, and identifying opportunities to better the process. The thesis summarizes the outcomes from all of these phases. The project focuses on improving IOQ coverage, efficiently reprioritizing the testing schedule, introducing threshold metric for installation quality, and exploring predictive and preventative maintenance opportunities.
This thesis also includes recommendations for refining the data-gathering process to improve future model outcomes. The ultimate goal is to improve FC installation quality and enhance the IOQ process to eliminate start-up issues. The approach taken and the recommendations proposed seek to approximate the ideal state as closely as possible. Incremental adoption of these recommendations will help deliver better-installed FCs, reduce early operational issues, improve start-up experiences, and strengthen ABCD's infrastructure.

Abstract:
With the dramatic increase in electricity demand and the need to tackle climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions such as CO₂, renewable generation has been increased in recent years in power systems. However, highly integrating renewable generation in distribution systems raises several issues and challenges that need to be addressed and some of these issues are investigated in this thesis. This research focuses on investigating the fault ride through, the system transient stability, the system frequency response and the grid power factor of distribution systems with high renewable energy penetration based on wind and solar-photovoltaic (PV). Several proposed control techniques for wind generators and PVs are introduced in this research to solve these issues and mitigate the negative impact of these units on distribution systems. A modified control system of DGs based on wind and PV in different distribution systems is used to help to ride through faults and meet the low voltage ride through (LVRT) grid code requirements for voltage recovery. A three phase two stage transformerless PV grid connected system is proposed with a new technique to ride through faults and protect the power electronic converters. A DC chopper is added to the DC link of wind generators to enable wind generating units to ride through faults and protect their converters from overvoltages. The Transient Stability Index method is used to assess the impact of such renewable sources on the system transient stability of various distribution networks. Different frequency control methods published in literature are used for various DGs based on wind and PV to investigate the frequency response of different distribution networks with high renewable energy penetration, and a new frequency control technique is proposed for wind generators based on Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) to improve the system frequency response. The impact of high renewable energy penetration based on wind and PV with different power factor settings on grid power factor of various distribution systems is discussed in this research. A three phase two stage transformerless PV grid connected system with reactive power capability is proposed to operate under different solar irradiance conditions and improve the utility grid power factor. Simulation results validate the proposed systems in various distribution systems, including IEEE 13 bus, IEEE 37 bus and IEEE 123 bus systems.

Abstract:
Research has long established the under representation of women police. A historical focus on discrimination and harassment in an overtly masculinised police environment has dominated discussion, with commentators failing to take into account the most feminine of all life experiences – procreation. This research critically assesses the impact of pregnancy and maternity upon the operational policing experience. A gendered theoretical conceptual framework informs a qualitative research strategy comprising in-depth interviews with serving women constables and senior officers. Are female officers’ experiences of deployment, training and career progression negatively affected by pregnancy, maternity and care responsibilities? An acceptance that police organisations are not gender neutral permits a feminist, contextualised approach, which seeks to establish the reality of managing pregnant and newly maternal women in policing. Findings suggest that female officers’ deployment and progression are significantly impacted by pregnancy and maternity. Police career structures remain dictated by dominant masculine values, which reinforce development structures built on the male life cycle. A risk averse culture to managing pregnancy was apparent. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and child-friendly flexible working necessitate multiple individual role moves, especially for uniformed officers. This restricts the use and development of women’s policing skills. A masculinised police culture appears resistant to family-friendly policies, despite evidence that such policies can be managed successfully in practice. Conceptions of operational career success are heavily gendered. The male body, which does not bear the responsibility of reproduction, remains the standard template. It is argued that it is not being a woman but being a mother that restricts the progression of women police. Progression pathways must acknowledge the female life cycle and adapt practices and policies to welcome this important difference if police services are to succeed in increasing female representation across all levels of their organisations.

Safiullah, Hameed. "Enabling the Future Grid: An Analysis of Operational and Flexibility Issues in the Indian Power Grid." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2016. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/747.

Full text
Abstract:
The Indian power system is expected to integrate large amounts of renewable energy resources in the near future. However, the characteristics of renewable energy resources differ greatly from conventional energy resources. Integrating large quantities of renewable resources therefore warrants enhancements and modifications to current practices as the current Indian power system lacks sufficient operational services that protect the grid against contingencies. This dissertation aims to analyze the operational and flexibility needs of the Indian grid to accommodate diverse and new energy sources. The first part of the dissertation analyzes the operational issues in the current power system. The Indian power system is restricted to a few services to support grid operation, which is primarily balancing demand and supply, in real-time. The different enhancements to the current balancing mechanism have varying impacts on the demand and supply balance, and this is reflected in the grid frequency. Therefore, the grid frequency under different balancing mechanism is modeled to understand the impacts. The results indicate that improving primary frequency response from generators along with a revision of the current prices is the most effective strategy. Next, given the current conditions that exist in the grid, a feasible load balancing mechanism is analyzed to understand the related benefits and costs. While the first part of the dissertation analyzes grid level impacts of different balancing mechanisms, the second part explores a service that should be implemented by the electric system operator to support grid balancing. The results indicate that the proposed mechanism is beneficial in reducing real-time emergency events by 55% at a power purchase cost increase of 3.5%. In addition to services, the system operators and regulators must ensure that there are sufficient flexible resources that can support the variability and uncertainty in the grid. The third part of the dissertation analyzes the impact of different generation scenarios on power system operation and reliability. The section highlights the need for flexible resources to counter the uncertainty and variability of renewable energy resources. In essence, the dissertation aims to encourage a rigorous approach to planning and policy making with regards to renewable energy integration.

Full text
Abstract:
This work aims to highlight the challenges of cultural diversity and linguistic plurality, facing the willingness emergence of the Southern Francophone countries, expressed after year 2000. Deconstruction and reconstruction of the concepts of emergence, cultural diversity, linguistic plurality, solidarity, development and global governance, under the different views of political literature, political economy, political philosophy and international relations were necessary. A step to better apprehend the behavior of the Francophonie within globalization, as well as Southern francophone countries over recent decades. A comparative evaluation was conducted in a context of action-research and following a multidisciplinary approach, which ultimately shows the level of the political, economic, social and cultural environments delays which are present in these southern Francophone countries. This delay which is characterized by an incorrect societal governance model, a financing of the economic development model based on poor foundations, lack of suitable language policy, and a presence of constitutional texts on complete phase shift with the advance of globalization. Thus, at the end of the story, a real feedback for the Francophonie is still awaited. What are today’s and tomorrow’s conditions in order to actually catch up the delay recorded in the Southern French-speaking countries? How could Francophonie react in front of this intricate situation? Some proposals are presented at the end of this research, which intends to go beyond issues of cultural diversity and linguistic plurality, as a way to lay the foundations of fair cards redistribution in the current and future of globalization, on behalf of the diversity principles, effective solidarity, practical universalism and operational humanism
