Over the past several decades, computers have allowed for the increasingly voluminous and rapid ingest of images. These images, made for machine legibility, are called "operational images," a term coined by Harun Farocki. They are made for machines, by machines; they are not made to represent an object, but are part of an operation. Yet these operational images are only the most recent chapter in a longer history of logistical and instrumental use of images. Through the history of cartography, surveillance, and reconnaissance runs a long tale of instrumentalization, a history of calculable images primed for machine-readability. Before computers allowed for a truly "operational" image that could be harvested and interpreted independently, there were many other logistical images -- only these predecessors kept humans in the operational loop. These days, so-called deep learning allows for a new development in the operational image -- not only are humans excluded, but machines are performing inscrutable assessments; they interpret images and provide conclusions while their rationales remain opaque. These images are part of an interpretive turn. This sort of image use is difficult to demystify, confront, and confound. To contemplate effective strategies, it helps to look at the broader context of subversion of the logistical image, reaching back to early instances of artistic intervention to help inform the present and future.

Stem (cell research is one of the most promising and cutting-edge fields i the miedical sciences. It is believed that this innovative research will lead to life-saving treatments in the coming years. As part of their work, stem cell researchers must first determine which of their stem cell colonies are of sufficiently high quality to be suitable for experimental studies and therapeutic treatments. Since colony texture is a major discriminating feature in determining quality. we introduce a non-invasive, semi-automated texture-based stem cell colony classification methodology to aid researchers in colony quality control. We first consider the general problem of textural image segmentation. In a new approach to this problem. we characterize image texture by the subband energies of the image's wavelet decomposition, and we employ a non-parametric support vector machine to perform the classification that yields the segmentation. We also adapt a parametric wavelet-based classifier that utilizes the Kullback-Leibler distance. We apply both methods to a set of benchmark textural images, report low segmentation error rates and comment on the applicability of and tradeoffs between the non-parametric and parametric segmentation methods.
(cont.) We then apply the two classifiers to the segmentation of stem cell colony images into regions of varying quality. This provides stem cell researchers with a rich set of descriptive graphical representations of their colonies to aid in quality control. From these graphical representatiolns, we extract colony-wise textural features to which we add colony-wise border features. Taken together, these features characterize overall colony quality. Using these features as inputs to a multiclass support vector machine, we successfully categorize full stem cell colonies into several quality categories. This methodology provides stem cell researchers with a novel, non-invasive quantitative quality control tool.

Full textThe next-generation commercial imaging satellites will generate data at several times the rate of current systems. To be commercially successful, these systems must have earth stations as sophisticated as the satellites themselves. Space Imaging has worked with E-Systems to exploit technologies developed over four generations of image processing, analysis and application systems to create a modular, standards-based, earth station for commercial use. A Space Imaging Operations Center can be configured in a variety of ways to provide complete, end-to-end, capabilities, from task generation to receipt of downlink, image processing, and product generation. While it is intended primarily for use with imagery from Space Imaging and other commercial satellites, an Operations Center can also accept, process and manage data from land-based, airborne or seaborne collectors. A sophisticated data management product, Mission Server™, handles and routes all data from signal receipt through final product generation. A unique family of data processing applications permit simultaneous manipulation and analysis of integrated map, image, graphic and text data. Online data storage and archiving are provided by the EMASS® family of products. An Operations Center of any size can accept, process and manage data streams of several hundred megabits per second in real time.
Waldon, Matthew C. 1981. "Low power image based triggering for extended operation surveillance." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/28689.
Full textIncludes bibliographical references (p. 69-70).
It is desirable for many surveillance applications to have a portable high quality imaging system capable of continuous monitoring in remote locations, often for extended periods of time. Extended operation can be achieved with low power by taking advantage of the fact that no interesting action is occurring in the area of interest most of the time, allowing the camera to be turned off. This type of operation requires some type of trigger to detect when events occur and turn on the camera to collect imagery. A novel technique for this type of detection is the use of signal processing on low spatial and temporal resolution imagery with a low-power processor to detect action events. The low-resolution imager operation and low-power processor allow the system to consume minimal power, while still taking advantage of the information available from the imager. Triggering is done by performing background subtraction on the low resolution imagery to detect scene changes. Although there is extensive research on this subject, no known research has attempted to implement this type of algorithm in a low power system, which puts a significant constraint on the computation that can be performed. This paper describes research conducted at MIT Lincoln Laboratory to develop a power constrained background subtraction technique, and design a low power hardware system that utilizes this form of detection for image based triggering.
