Vallejo Maldonado, Pablo Ramon, and Nikolay Chaynov. Kinematics and dynamics of automobile piston engines. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/989072.

Full text
Abstract:
The fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics of transport piston internal combustion engines made using different layout schemes are presented. Along with the traditional in-line, V-shaped, including oppositional, arrangement of cylinders, schemes with "staggered" arrangement of cylinders in the block at the displaced connecting rod necks of the crankshaft of the engine are considered. The kinematics of the coaxial crank mechanism is considered in detail. The questions of dynamics with reduction of calculated dependences of forces, moments, a choice of a rational order of work of cylinders in relation to the considered kinematic schemes are in detail stated. Considerable attention is paid to the unevenness of the crankshaft rotation speed and engine balancing. The loads on the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft, the knowledge of which is necessary in determining the bearing capacity of bearing units, are also considered. Meets the requirements of the Federal state educational standards of higher education of the last generation. Berrill, Andrew, and Pawan Gupta. General principles of regional anaesthesia. Edited by Philip M. Hopkins. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642045.003.0052.

Full text
Abstract:
Regional anaesthesia is now extremely safe in experienced hands. The vast majority of upper and lower limb procedures can now be performed with either a peripheral regional block alone or in combination with a general anaesthetic. Neuraxial blocks can provide reliable postoperative pain relief for operations on the trunk and lower limbs. There is no consensus on the maximum safe dose of local anaesthetics. It is important therefore to use a minimum optimal dose of a local anaesthetic for any nerve block to reduce the risk of toxicity and to improve the success rate. Adjuncts, such as clonidine and dexamethasone, can prolong the duration of the block. Advances in nerve localization methods and block needles have further improved the safety of nerve blocks. There is increasing evidence to show that ultrasound is superior to peripheral nerve stimulation for identifying nerves. Ultrasound also helps in real-time visualization of the spread of the local anaesthetic. Consent, sedation, and support from non-anaesthetic staff play a key role in the success of regional anaesthesia, especially in awake patients. Although serious complications from nerve blocks are uncommon, direct nerve injury is perhaps the most serious complication. Fortunately, these symptoms in the overwhelming majority resolve within a year. This chapter covers the history, factors affecting local anaesthetics, role of adjuncts, nerve localization techniques, and complications of regional anaesthesia. Finally, some suggestions to improve the success and safety of peripheral nerve blocks are discussed.

Abstract:
Circumcision is a commonly performed operation. Regional analgesia is provided either by penile block or caudal block. Each approach to anesthetizing the penis has attendant risk and benefits. The provider has several decision points to observe when choosing which, if either, technique to apply. The basic anatomic factors (including the identification and significance of sacral dimples), technical steps, risks, and considerations of each are discussed. Overall, each block offers benefit to the patient, and choosing between them can be based on need for ambulation postoperatively, operator experience, and availability of appropriate equipment. When available, ultrasound can enhance the efficacy of penile nerve blocks.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter outlines a formal theory of inferential-realizational morphology that eliminates (ordered) rule blocks. I show that rule blocks not only stand in the way of a more general treatment of variable morphotactics, but that they also artificially restrict the scope of Pāṇinian competition, effectively ruling out operation at a distance. Instead, it argues for a purely information-based model of global competition that reconciles competition with extended exponence by means of a distinction between realization and allomorphic conditioning. It shows, in particular, that arbitrary decisions with respect to this distinction can be eliminated, once Carstairs’s (1987) notion of Pure Sensitivity has been turned into a formal principle of our theory. Finally, the chapter shows how Information-based Morphology can account for symmetric cases of extended exponence by simultaneous introduction of exponents since the theory is able to capture many-to-many relations between form and function at the level of individual rules.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we focus on symmetric encryption. We begin by identifying two different types of symmetric encryption algorithm, namely, stream and block ciphers. We discuss the basic idea behind a stream cipher and consider their properties and applications. We then introduce block ciphers. We focus on two extremely important and influential block cipher algorithms, the Data Encryption Standard and the Advanced Encryption Standard, discussing the history of their development as well as their basic design. We then introduce the modes of operation of a block cipher, explaining why different modes have been proposed. We examine in detail four of the most well-established modes of operation and their core properties, as well as classifying other modes of operation.

Capmany, José, and Daniel Pérez. Programmable Integrated Photonics. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198844402.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Programmable Integrated Photonics (PIP) is a new paradigm that aims at designing common integrated optical hardware configurations, which by suitable programming can implement a variety of functionalities that, in turn, can be exploited as basic operations in many application fields. Programmability enables by means of external control signals both chip reconfiguration for multifunction operation as well as chip stabilization against non-ideal operation due to fluctuations in environmental conditions and fabrication errors. Programming also allows activating parts of the chip, which are not essential for the implementation of a given functionality but can be of help in reducing noise levels through the diversion of undesired reflections. After some years where the Application Specific Photonic Integrated Circuit (ASPIC) paradigm has completely dominated the field of integrated optics, there is an increasing interest in PIP justified by the surge of a number of emerging applications that are and will be calling for true flexibility, reconfigurability as well as low-cost, compact and low-power consuming devices. This book aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to this emergent field covering aspects that range from the basic aspects of technologies and building photonic component blocks to the design alternatives and principles of complex programmable photonics circuits, their limiting factors, techniques for characterization and performance monitoring/control and their salient applications both in the classical as well as in the quantum information fields. The book concentrates and focuses mainly on the distinctive features of programmable photonics as compared to more traditional ASPIC approaches.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the U.S. propaganda actions in Operation Rome. In the years following the Melbourne Olympics, the United States would cope with technological and cultural defeat at the hands of the Soviets, even as the U.S. psychological warfare apparatus would once again direct their propaganda efforts at the next Olympic Games. Rome in particular was the venue for the 1960 summer Olympics, and it would offer covert operators with another platform to destabilize and unhinge the regimes in the Soviet bloc. Adhering to the U.S. government's new direction in policy, the Free Europe Committee (FEC) sought to increase “contacts” between exiles and the people of Eastern Europe by targeting the Rome Olympic Games with a multifaceted plan that exploited the propaganda potential of the hosting city and the tourists who visited it.

Full text
Abstract:
Syntactic contrasts, the systems of grammatical oppositions that exist within individual languages, are typically formally encoded in terms of features. The nature of syntactic contrast is tied to a fundamental question in generative syntactic theory: What is universal in syntax (and in language more generally), and what is variable? This volume explores the dual role of features, on the one hand defining a set of paradigmatic contrasts, and other the other hand acting as the building blocks of syntactic structures and the drivers of syntactic operations. In both roles, features are increasingly seen as the locus of parametric variation. The identification of parameters with features has opened up new possibilities for exploring connections between the morphological system of a language and its syntax, and suggests a new role for featural contrast in syntactic theory. The papers collected here represent a diversity of topics, perspectives, and concerns, but are united by an interest in morphosyntactic representations, and in the formal encoding of syntactic contrasts.

Full text
Abstract:
Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), reported by Cleveland Clinic surgeon René Favaloro in 1969, represented a new approach to treating angina pectoris that involved operating directly on a diseased coronary artery. The strategy involved inserting a vein segment between the aorta and a coronary artery. This bypass graft carried blood to heart muscle that would normally have been supplied by a blocked coronary artery. CABG caught on quickly because it seemed to improve angina in a significant percentage of patients and produced income for surgeons and hospitals. But controversy surrounded the value of the operation, and Mayo heart specialists joined others in calling for controlled clinical trials to evaluate it. The Cleveland Clinic group initially resisted trials, claiming that their institutional experience proved that the operation was beneficial. In less than a decade, coronary bypass surgery was associated with a total annual cost of about $1 billion in America.

Full text
Abstract:
Incorporating Rights: Strategies to Advance Corporate Accountability examines existing and emerging advocacy strategies that could conceivably close a global governance gap that puts human rights at risk and places commercial actors at risk of becoming complicit in human rights abuses when conducting business in emerging market economies and complex environments. Corporate codes of conduct, sustainability reporting, and selected multistakeholder initiatives are presented as the building blocks of a system of soft law that could solidify to become binding baseline standards for better business practices. This book explains the conditions that have given rise to constructive change as well as those methods and mechanisms with promise for ensuring that business enterprises incorporate human rights considerations into business operations. This book explores how capital and consumer markets could provide an additional or alternative form of enforcement to promote responsible business conduct. It provides accounts of the creation of industry sector regulatory instruments and governance institutions arising from allegations of corporate complicity in human rights abuses. It examines how corporate social responsibility initiatives could close the governance gap and how codes of conduct could come to regulate like real rules. This book argues that regulation through information is essential to ensure that corporate conduct will be informed by human rights considerations and implemented consistent with respect for human rights. Where concerned consumers and investors exercise preferences for products that are not associated with abuse and have access to information on corporate performance and risks posed to human rights, there is potential to change corporate conduct. Societal expectations are increasing and evolving.

Full text
Abstract:
Obstetrical Anesthesia Procedures provides timely updates in the field of obstetrical anesthesia and provides a concise, up-to-date, evidence-based and richly illustrated book for students, trainees, and practicing clinicians. The book comprehensively covers a robust list of topics focused to improve understanding in the field with emphasis on recent developments in clinical practices, technology, and procedures. This book describes all the essential topics that are required for the practitioner to quickly assess the patient and risk stratify them, decide on the type of analgesic and anesthetic plan that is most appropriate for the patient, its feasibility and safety, provide expert consultation to the other members of the obstetric team, manage anesthesia care and complications, and arrange for advanced care if needed. There are special considerations for pregnant patients undergoing non-obstetric surgery, anesthesia for assisted reproductive technologies, and anesthetic management of operations on placental support. It is also important to develop the skills needed to perform antenatal evaluation of high-risk parturients and understand the physiology of pregnancy and peripartum anesthetic implications of co-existing conditions involving hematologic, cardiac, neurological, renal, endocrine and pulmonary systems. There are also special considerations for parturients with pregnancy-induced hypertension, multiple gestations, abnormal fetal presentation, preterm labor, obstetric hemorrhage, and trauma in pregnancy. There are pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management options for labor, caesarean delivery, and postoperative pain. This includes management of intravenous and oral analgesics, understanding of drug pharmacology and its effect on the mother and the baby, neuraxial techniques (spinal, epidural, combined spinal-epidural) and peripheral nerve blocks.

Abstract:
This book presents the complete proof of the Bloch–Kato conjecture and several related conjectures of Beilinson and Lichtenbaum in algebraic geometry. Brought together here for the first time, these conjectures describe the structure of étale cohomology and its relation to motivic cohomology and Chow groups. Although the proof relies on the work of several people, it is credited primarily to Vladimir Voevodsky. The book draws on a multitude of published and unpublished sources to explain the large-scale structure of Voevodsky's proof and introduces the key figures behind its development. It proceeds to describe the highly innovative geometric constructions of Markus Rost, including the construction of norm varieties, which play a crucial role in the proof. It then addresses symmetric powers of motives and motivic cohomology operations. The book unites various components of the proof that until now were scattered across many sources of varying accessibility, often with differing hypotheses, definitions, and language.
