The aging Whidbey Island and Harpers Ferry class ships, LSD-41 and 49 respectively, comprise just over one third of the amphibious navy. However, a solution to the capability gap created by the loss of these ships is needed to maintain the effectiveness of the amphibious fleet across a broad spectrum of mission areas. This research effort considers future ship designs and fleet architectures to meet the capability gaps left by the decommissioning of the LSD-41 and 49 class ships. With respect to lift capacity, performance capability, cost and a risk assessment, the analysis showed the LPD-17 or a LSD(X) approximately 30% larger than the existing classes to be acceptable replacement classes. This analysis also supports further research to determine the most robust fleet architecture apart from the current eleven LHA or LHD, eleven LPD and eleven LSD paradigm.

Abstract:
The work described within this thesis is mainly concerned with the solution and refinement of the molecular structures of a variety of novel compounds. A number of X-ray and neutron diffractometers have been utilised for the analysis of specific compounds, depending on the nature of the investigation. Each of the instruments represented differing levels of computer automation and instrumentation. A powder diffractometer, representing old technology was interfaced to a microcomputer to enhance the instruments performance. A brief overview is given of the numerical processes involved in the elucidation and refinement of molecular structures from X-ray and neutron diffraction data. Particular attention has been placed on the role of computers to perform these calculations. The operation of the diffractometers employed in this study has been discussed comparing the benefits of each. A detailed report of the techniques used to enhance the low resolution diffractometer and of the experiments performed to highlight the increased performance has been included. Single crystal and powder diffraction studies were made of a wide variety of crystalline materials ranging from steroids to organometallic compounds. The X-ray structures were solved using Direct and Patterson vector methods from experimental data collected on a four circle diffractometer at Aberdeen University. Neutron diffraction experiments, performed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, were commissioned to determine and refine the positions of the hydrogen atoms of two known structures, previously solved by Xray studies. Finally a critical evaluation of current computer automated diffractometers is presented, highlighting the new areas of instrument development.

Wang, Li Ge. "Particle breakage mechanics in milling operation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28950.

Full text
Abstract:
Milling is a common unit operation in industry for the purpose of intentional size reduction. Considerable amount of energy is consumed during a grinding process and much of the energy is dissipated as heat and sound, which often makes grinding into an energy-intensive and highly inefficient operation. Despite many attempts to interpret particle breakage during a milling process, the grindability of a material in a milling operation remains aloof and the mechanisms of particle breakage are still poorly understood. Hence the optimisation and refinement in the design and operation of milling are in great need of an improved scientific understanding of the complex failure mechanisms. This thesis aims to provide an in-depth understanding of particle breakage associated with stressing events that occur during milling. A hybrid of experimental, theoretical and numerical methods has been adopted to elucidate the particle breakage mechanics. This study covers from single particle damage at micro-scale to bulk comminution during the whole milling process. The mechanical properties of two selected materials, i.e. alumina and zeolite were measured by indentation techniques. The breakage test of zeolite granules subjected to impact loading was carried out and it was found that tangential component velocity plays an increasingly important role in particle breakage with increasing impact velocity. Besides, single particle breakage via in-situ loading was conducted under X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) to study the microstructure of selected particles, visualize the progressive failure process and evaluate the progressive failure using the technique of digital image correlation (DIC). A new particle breakage model was proposed deploying a mechanical approach assuming that the subsurface lateral crack accounts for chipping mechanism. Considering the limitation of existing models in predicting breakage under oblique impact and the significance of tangential component velocity identified from experiment, the effect of impact angle is considered in the developed breakage model, which enables the contribution of the normal and tangential velocity component to be rationalized. The assessment of breakage models including chipping and fragmentation under oblique impact suggests that the equivalent normal velocity proposed in the new model is able to give close prediction with experimental results sourced from the public literature. Milling experiments were performed using the UPZ100 impact pin mill (courtesy by Hosokawa Micron Ltd. UK) to measure the comminution characteristics of the test solids. Several parameters were used to evaluate the milling performance including product size distribution, relative size span, grinding energy and size reduction ratio etc. The collective data from impact pin mill provides the basis for the validation of numerical simulation results. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is first used to model single particle breakage subject to normal impact loading using a bonded contact model. A validation of the bonded contact model was conducted where the disparity with the experimental results is discussed. A parametric study of the most significant parameters e.g. bond Young’s modulus, the mean tensile bond strength, the coefficient of variation of the strength and particle & particle restitution coefficient in the DEM contact model was carried out to gain a further understanding of the effect of input parameters on the single particle breakage behavior. The upscaling from laboratory scale (single particle impact test) to industrial process scale (impact pin mill) is achieved using Population Balance Modelling (PBM). Two important functions in PBM, the selection function and breakage function are discussed based on the single particle impact from both experimental and numerical methods. An example of predicting product size reduction via PBM was given and compared to the milling results from impact pin mill. Finally, the DEM simulation of particle dynamics with emphasis on the impact energy distribution was presented and discussed, which sheds further insights into the coupling of PBM and DEM.

Abstract:
University of Central Florida College of Arts and Sciences Thesis
Extending lasing action into the extreme ultaviolet and soft x-ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum has been a natural progression in the continuing development of short wavelength radiation sources. However fundamental difficulties with the media used to produce short wavelength lasers has in general hindered the widespread development and use of such lasers in applications. Up to now all EUV and soft x-ray lasers have operated with plasmas as the gain medium to support lasing. This is a general requiremnt imposed by 1) the characteristics of short wavelength radiation as it originates from highly energetic atomic transitions and 2) the fundamental aspects of lasing at these wavelengths. Thus the plasma environment has been the defining characteristic in achieving lasing in the EUV and soft x-ray spectral regions. This thesis presents investigations into two types of EUV/Soft x-ray lasers that describe the operation and associated plasma dynamics of these devices. The first is a numerical investigation into a recombination pumped x-ray laser at 13.5 nm operating in a Li plasma. Using a collisional-radiative model of the atomic system, simulations were performed to determine the plasma conditions necessary to produce gain that were observed in reported experiments. The second investigation is the experimental development and operation of a capillary discharge driven laser operating at 46.9 nm in Ar. This device is a new generation of EUV/Soft X-ray laser based on a small scale driver system. The first interferometric probing experiments of this device will be discussed and related to the plasma dynamics of the capillary discharge.

Kusi-Obodum, Christian. "Alfonso X and Islam : narratives of conflict and co-operation in the Estoria de España." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8095/.

Full text
Abstract:
Medieval Iberian literary tradition constitutes a vast corpus of writings with which to study interfaith relations – in particular, Christian attitudes towards Muslims. This thesis focuses on works produced in the thirteenth century under king Alfonso X of Castile-Leon. Scholars have often looked to Alfonso X's poetry and legal texts to explore Christian responses to Islam, at a pivotal moment of Christian domination in the Peninsula. The thesis looks to Alfonso's historiography (the Estoria de España), which has received much less attention from scholars of interfaith relations. This study employs a historical-critical method of interpretation to explore the transmission and reformulation of Christian society's attitudes towards Islam. It offers a sophisticated analysis of the narratives of three prominent figures in the history of Spanish Islam: a) the Prophet Muhammad, b) Ibn Abi Amir al-Mansur, and c) King al- Mamun of Toledo. The study reveals the wide-ranging and contrasting attitudes towards Muslims visible not only in the writings of Alfonso X, but throughout the broader historiography and literature of medieval Spain. The thesis explains how these contradictions are rooted in the paradoxes of conflict and co-operation among the faiths in the Peninsula. It concludes that the ambivalence of Christian writers allows for the coexistence of both disdain and respect for Muslims in medieval society.

Neiser, Richard A. "Considerations in the design and operation of synchrotron radiation beamlines (including a discussion on the properties of synchrotron radiation." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/101246.

Full text
Abstract:
The X-ray optics of synchrotron radiation beamlines are considered in this paper. The characteristics of synchrotron radiation which make it the premier source of light for studies in many regions of the electromagnetic spectrum are given. A chapter is devoted to the collimating, focusing and monochromating optics of two X-ray diffraction beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The beamlines are operated by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL). The major optical components of these beamlines are reviewed in regards to their function and their flexibility. A detailed analysis is performed on the NRL X-ray collimating mirror. The mirror is treated as an elastically bent beam. Deflection and slope error equations are developed which relate the shape of the bent mirror to its ideal surface. Visible light diffraction patterns collected from the mirror helped to establish operating conditions which provide good collimation. When the observed patterns are wed to the theoretical calculations, estimates of the average figure error are made. Finally, the effect of a highly collimated synchrotron beam on the reproducibility of the integrated intensities from polycrystalline materials is considered. The calculations show that except for the most fine grained materials, representative intensity measurements can only be made when the sample is permitted to move.

Abstract:
All across physics research, incoherent and coherent light sources are extensively utilized. Especially highly brilliant X-ray sources such as third generation synchrotrons or free-electron lasers have become an invaluable tool enabling experimental techniques that are unique to these kinds of light sources. But these sources have developed to large scale facilities and a demand in compact laboratory scale sources providing radiation of similar quality arises nowadays. This thesis focuses on Traveling-Wave Thomson-Scattering (TWTS) which allows for the realization of ultra-compact, inherently synchronized and highly brilliant light sources. The TWTS geometry provides optical undulators, through which electrons pass and thereby emit radiation, with hundreds to thousands of undulator periods by utilizing pulse-front tilted lasers pulses from high peak-power laser systems. TWTS can realize incoherent radiation sources with orders of magnitude higher photon yield than established head-on Thomson sources. Moreover, optical free-electron lasers (OFELs) can be realized with TWTS if state-of-the-art technology in electron accelerators and laser systems is utilized. Tilting the laser pulse front with respect to the wavefront by half of this interaction angle optimizes electron and laser pulse overlap by compensating the spatial offset between electrons and the laser pulse-front at the beginning of the interaction when the electrons are far from the laser pulse axis. The laser pulse-front tilt ensures continuous overlap between electrons and laser pulse while the electrons cross the laser pulse cross-sectional area. Thus the interaction distance can be controlled in TWTS by the laser pulse width rather than laser pulse duration. Utilizing wide, petawatt class laser pulses allows realizing thousands of optical undulator periods. This thesis will show that TWTS OFELs emitting ultraviolet radiation are realizable today with existing technology for electron accelerators and laser systems. The requirements on electron bunch and laser pulse quality of these ultraviolet TWTS OFELs are discussed in detail as well as the corresponding requirements of TWTS OFELs emitting in the soft and hard X-ray range. These requirements are derived from scaling laws which stem from a self-consistent analytic description of the electron bunch and radiation field dynamics in TWTS OFELs presented within this thesis. It is shown that these dynamics in TWTS OFELs are qualitatively equivalent to the electron bunch and radiation field dynamics of standard free-electron lasers which analytically proves the applicability of TWTS for the realization of an optical free-electron laser. Furthermore, experimental setup strategies to generate the pulse-front tilted TWTS laser pulses are presented and designs of experimental setups for the above examples are discussed. The presented setup strategies provide dispersion compensation, required due to angular dispersion of the laser pulse, which is especially relevant when building compact, high-yield hard X-ray TWTS sources in large interaction angle setups. An example of such an enhanced Thomson source by TWTS, which provides orders of magnitude higher spectral photon density than a comparable head-on interaction geometry, is presented, too

This work is linked to the line of research on "International Relations", of the Post-Graduate strictly in Law, International Relations and Development at the Pontifical Catholic Univeridade of Goiás and analyzes the possible contradictions between National Law and the International Direinto issues involving human rights, especially the question of internalization of norms of international law to adjudicate crimes committed during the military dictatorship. We started from the hypothesis that the Brazilian Federal Constitution greets, from the Constitutional Amendment 45 of 2004, which added § 3 of Art. 5th treaties and conventions that deal with the status of Human Rights Constitutional Amendment, through which the rules should be interpreted as a higher-ranking international front alluded to the internal laws infra. Operation Condor, international relations between countries of the Southern Cone during the Military Dictatorship, serves as the object for the development of this study about International Law and Comparative Law regarding the apparent divergence of opinion as to the legislative process and court between the Southern Cone countries on issues relating to international relations and conventions on Human Rights. Currently, Brazil is the only country in Latin America that have not punished the perpetrators of the military dictatorship because of constitutional legislation (Amnesty Law No. 6.683/79) which is in obvious conflict with international standards and the trend of the constitutionalization fundamental rights and guarantees of the human person, especially with regard to art. 5, § 3 of the CF/88. Unlike their neighbors, former partners of the organization of terror, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile and Peru, Brazil has not yet manifested itself in view of the recommendations of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights to prosecute and punish those responsible for crimes committed during the dictatorship Military, unlike the Brazilian Supreme Court, in ADPF No. 153, as manifested by not revocability of Law 6.683/79 front ace Human Rights Conventions to which Brazil is a signatory. From this divergence of understandings between the Brazilian Supreme Court and Court of Human Rights, sought to present possible solutions to the antinomy material between the Brazilian National Law and International Law, focusing on the possibility of punishment for crimes committed during the Military Dictatorship forward to Operation Condor.

This work has a theoretical and methodological framework that is divided into two complementary areas: the Language and Computational/Implementacional. For its computational stamp, the first scope of this work is directly linked to the processing of natural language (PNL). Thus, it implements an automatic syntactic analysis (parsing) of expressions of Portuguese in a computational program from the Python library of NLTK, whose tests are represented in tree configurations that show slash categories of finite sentences of Portuguese. While much attention has been given to analyzing and optimizing problems in air transportation, relatively little research has gone into studying airport surface operations. In recent years a surface surveillance system called Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model-X (ASDE-X) has been installed at over 30 airports in the US as a safety device. The applications of the data being captured by these systems are far broader than just promoting safety. In this thesis, it will be demonstrated how ASDE-X data can be analyzed to characterize airport operations, and how it might be used going forward in real-time. The process of converting the raw ASDE-X data into a useable format will be discussed. Then, an analysis of airport operations at LaGuardia Airport and Philadelphia Airport will be presented using three months of summer data. These airports will be studied both in an aggregate fashion as well as for individual runway configurations. Finally, a case study of an Android tablet application will be presented as a next step in automation for aiding airport traffic operations.

NASA and the Air Force are increasing the number of hypersonic and access-to-space programs creating a growing requirement for flight test ranges over large regional areas. A principal challenge facing these extended test ranges is the ability to provide continuous vehicle communications by filling the gaps in coverage between fixed ground stations. Consequently, there is a need for mobile range systems that provide a multitude of communication services under varying circumstances. This paper discusses the functional design and systems capabilities, as well as the mission support criteria, concerning NASA’s Mobile Operations Facility (MOF). The MOF will be deployed to Dugway Proving Grounds (DPG), Utah, in support of the X-33 single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) demonstrator.

Abstract:
By first looking at the orthonormal basis: Γ = {∑i 4 ibi ∈{0, 1}, finite sums} and the related orthonormal basis 5Γ = {5∑i 4i bi : bi ∈ {0, 1}, finite sums} we find several interesting relationships with the unitary matrix Uα,β arising from the operator U: Γ → 5Γ. Further, we investigate the relationships between U and the operators So : Γ → 4Γ defined by Soe4γ where eγ = e2ΠiΓ and S1: Γ → 4Γ+1 defined by S1eγ = e4γ+1. Most intriguing, we found that when taking powers of the aforementioned Uα,β matrix that although there are infinitely many 1's occurring in the entries of Uα,β only one such 1 occurs in the subsequent higher powers Ukα,β. This means that there are infinitely many γ ∈ Γ ∩ 5Γ, but only one such γ in the intersection Γ and 5kΓ, for k ≥ 2.

Abstract:

Reference radiation fields for x-ray qualities are described by the International Organization of Standards (ISO). This study describes the procedure to establish nine different low energy X-ray qualities at the national metrology laboratory, Swedish Radiation Protection Authority, following the document ISO 4037. Measurements of tube voltage, half-value layer, mean energy and spectral resolution have been performed for qualities N-15, N-20, N-25, N-30, N-40, L-20, L-30, L-35 and L-55. Furthermore, dose equivalent conversion coefficients for operational quantities ambient dose equivalent, personal dose equivalent and directional dose equivalent have been calculated by folding the mono-energetic conversion factors with measured spectral distributions of the x-ray qualities. The spectral distributions were unfolded from pulse-height distributions to photon distributions using simulated data of the semi-conductor detector used for measurements, generated with the Monte Carlo code PENELOPE.

Although the stamp computing, this research elaborates a grammar fragment, modeled to capture specific features of linguistic structure of Portuguese, based on the formal model of description linguistic known as Context Free Grammar (CFG) Based on Features, with the purpose of demonstrate how the library of NLTK programs supports the implementation of parsers for analyzing the feature structure. For its stamp of language, it analyzes, according to X-bar Theory and the Minimalist Program, sentences in European and Brazilian variants of Portuguese, obtained from surveys in electronic corpora available on the web. And this work describes and discusses the category IP (inflectional phrase) within the hierarchical structure of constituents, according to the hypothesis of syntactic operation of visible and invisible movement of elements of language, specifically the movement of the verb

Abstract:
The use of X-ray imaging technologies during minimally-invasive procedures exposes both patients and medical staff to ionizing radiation. Even if the dose absorbed during a single procedure can be low, long-term exposure can lead to noxious effects (e.g. cancer). In this thesis, we therefore propose methods to improve the overall radiation safety in the hybrid operating room by acting in two complementary directions. First, we propose approaches to make clinicians more aware of exposure by providing in-situ visual feedback of the ongoing radiation dose by means of augmented reality. Second, we propose to act on the X-ray device positioning with an optimization approach for recommending an angulation reducing the dose deposited to both patient and staff, while maintaining the clinical quality of the outcome image. Both applications rely on approaches proposed to perceive the room using RGBD cameras and to simulate in real-time the propagation of radiation and the deposited dose

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fluoroscopic C-arms are operated by medical radiography technologists (MRTs) in Canadian operating rooms (ORs). Newly trained MRTs often experience most of their practical learning curve with C-arms in the OR, where achieving the radiographic views requested by surgeons can be challenging. New MRTs often require several scout X-rays during C-arm positioning, resulting in unnecessary radiation exposure and added OR time. To address this problem we have designed an Artificial X-ray Imaging System (AXIS) in order to assess the utility of artificial X-rays in improving the C-arm positioning performance by inexperienced users. AXIS is designed to generate Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs (DRRs), or artificial X-ray images, based on the relative position of a C-arm and manikin. We enrolled 30 participants into our user study, each of whom performed four activities: an introduction session, an AXIS-guided evaluation, a non-AXIS-guided evaluation, and a questionnaire. The main goal of the study was to compare C-arm positioning performance with and without AXIS guidance. For each evaluation, the participants had to replicate a set of target X-ray images by taking real radiographs of the manikin with the C-arm. During the AXIS evaluation, artificial X-rays were generated at 2 Hz for guidance, while in the non-AXIS evaluation, the participants had to acquire real X-rays to guide them toward the correct view. We recorded the number of real X-rays and time required per task, as well as tracked the C-arm’s pose and compared it to the target pose to determine positioning accuracy. We found that users required 53% fewer scout X-rays and achieved 10% better C-arm displacement accuracies when guided by AXIS, without requiring more time to complete the imaging tasks. From the questionnaires we found that, on average, participants felt significantly more confident in their ability to capture correct anatomical views when they were guided by AXIS. Moreover, the participants found the usefulness of AXIS in guiding them to the desired view to be ‘very good’. Overall, we are encouraged by these findings and plan to further develop this system with the goal of deploying it both for training and intraoperative uses.

Abstract:
During catheterized x-ray interventions the patient and medical staff is exposed to scatter radiation, as a consequence of tissue interactions. Ionizing radiation for medical purpose is potentially dangerous and can cause malignancy, skin damage and more. Studies have suggested an increase in the prevalence of eye lens cataract, thyroid cancer and left sided brain tumors in doctors. Therefore, it is mandatory to reduce the radiation dose in medicine, a principle known as ALARA (as low as Reasonably Achievable). Lead aprons, collars and shieldings are safety precautions to protect the team in the operating room. The x-ray equipment and surgical techniques are constantly evolving and the interventions become more complex which may increase the x-ray dose. Although x-ray imaging is required in interventional procedures endeavors of reducing radiation exposure to staff is of high interest. There is a need to increase the awareness about scatter radiation and radiation protection efforts are gaining momentum. Initiative to train a dose reducing behavior by education and awareness are key documents within the European Union’s guidelines on Radiation protection. The aims of this thesis were to create a 3D model for representation of real-time exposure and accumulated scatter radiation to staff performing interventional x-ray procedures and identify parameters that affect the scatter radiation. Extensive measurements were made with real time dosimeters while irradiating an anthropomorphic phantom. For five lateral C-arm projections, 68 - 80 data points each were used to measure scatter dose distribution around the patient. In the typical operator position, the effect of craniocaudal projection angle, patient size, field size, image detector height and pulse rate on scatter radiation dose was also investigated. It was possible to create a 3D model from interpolated measurement data that can generate dose rate with promising results. Six out of eight modelled doses deviated +/- 26.6 % from the validation cases. A model that delivers relative dose is an intuitive approach in education for interventional x-ray radiation safety. The staff position in relation to the x-ray source and the patient size have a significant correlation to the dose rate. Additional measurements are needed to ensure the reliability of the model. This work completes the effect of scatter radiation distribution around the patient table, which is not yet evaluated as thoroughly by other authors.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the problem of reconstructing 3D anatomical surfaces based on intra-operatively acquired sparse scattered point data and few calibrated X-ray images. The approach consists in matching the data with a statistical deformable shape model thus incorporating a priori knowledge into the reconstruction process (. . ) It is further shown that hybrid matching combining both, 3D/3D and 3D/2D registration, might be an interesting option for certain Computer Assisted Surgery Applications

Abstract:
As organizations become more age diverse, some business leaders face challenges managing a multigenerational workforce. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies that leaders at a university in Northwest Florida implemented to retain their age-diverse workforce. The targeted population was higher education business managers who had success with retaining an age-diverse staff. The conceptual framework of the study was Herzberg's 2-factor theory of motivation. A significant tenet of this theory is that employees explain satisfying and dissatisfying experiences based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors related to their job functions. The data collection process included face-to-face interviews with 4 participants and a review of company documents, including the university's strategic plan and diversity and inclusion initiatives. Through coding and thematic analysis, 7 themes emerged that could help leaders retain a multigenerational workforce: foster a diversity-friendly workplace culture, implement effective interpersonal communication strategies, employ a formal approach, encourage a healthy work-life balance, value employees and their differences, offer professional growth opportunities, and eliminate negative generational stereotyping. Developing and cultivating retention strategies may contribute to social change by helping managers and leaders enrich retention rates, thereby increasing employment stability, improving productivity, and enhancing organizational and community relations.

Abstract:
Purpose - This master thesis evaluates the hybrid-electric aircraft project E-Fan X with respect to its economical and environmental performance in comparison to its reference aircraft, the BAe 146-100. The E-Fan X is replacing one of the four jet engines of the reference aircraft by an electric motor and a fan. A turboshaft engine in the cargo compartment drives a generator to power the electric motor. --- Methodology - The evaluation of this project is based on standard aircraft design equations. Economics are based on Direct Operating Costs (DOC), which are calculated with the method of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) from 1989, inflated to 2019 values. Environmental impact is assessed based on local air quality (NOx, Ozone and Particulate Matter), climate impact (CO2, NOx, Aircraft-Induced Cloudiness known as AIC) and noise pollution estimated with fundamental acoustic equations. --- Findings - The battery on board the E-Fan X it is not necessary. In order to improve the proposed design, the battery was eliminated. Nevertheless, due to additional parts required in the new configuration, the aircraft is 902 kg heavier. The turboshaft engine saves only 59 kg of fuel. The additional mass has to be compensated by a payload reduced by 9 passengers. The DOC per seat-mile are up by more than 10% and equivalent CO2 per seat-mile are more than 16% up in the new aircraft. --- Research limitations - Results are limited in accuracy by the underlying standard aircraft design calculations. The results are also limited in accuracy by the lack of knowledge of some data of the project. --- Practical implications - The report contributes arguments to the discussion about electric flight. --- Social implications - Results show that unconditional praise given to the environmental characteristics of this industry project are not justified.

Abstract:
The workforce is diverse on gender, race, ethnicity, culture, work styles, and age. Employees from different generations have varying expectations of what they value from the workplace and therefore approach work differently. Generational differences can lead to mistrust and communication breakdowns. They can also impact job satisfaction and productivity. The Generational Cohort Theory was utilized in this nonexperimental study, and the sample was recruited from CB Richard Ellis Real Estate Group. The purpose of this study was to determine the work values differences among the 4 generational cohorts: Silent, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. The research questions for this quantitative study first identified the preferred work values, utilizing the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire (MIQ), and sought if there was a statistically significant means difference in those preferred values from 1 generation to another. A 1-way MANOVA was used to analyze the effect of generation cohort affiliation with preferred work values, revealing a positive relationship between cohort and preferred work values. Results indicated that some work values are unique between generations, such as being busy all the time and doing things for other people, and some are shared, including telling people what to do and having good coworkers. Additional research is needed to address the gap in current literature in the areas of autonomy and recognition. The implications for social change include acquiring a greater knowledge of similarities and differences between older and younger workers.. This knowledge is essential for building high-performing teams, for successful recruitment, and employee retention.

Xanthan yield and physical and chemical characteristics can be improved by modification in culture conditions, as well as, by post-fermentation treatments in order to obtain a xanthan with the required characteristics. The aim of this work was to study the operational conditions in xanthan production by Xanthomonas arborícola pv pruni strains 106 and 115 to be used in oilwell drilling fluids. The influence of thermal treatment applied to the fermentation broth was evaluated in the xanthan produced by strain 106 in a range of pH and stirrer speed. The thermal treatment decreased the yield between 5.8 and 14%, nevertheless, was observed increase of aqueous solution and fermentation broth viscosities. The aggregation of xanthan molecules caused by thermal treatment and determined by increase of molar mass was dependent on the sodium content. As a result, a correlation between molar mass and xanthan solution viscosity can be observed. The fermentation broth sterilization was adopted for experiment in which a pre-selection of production medium in orbital shaker was performed for subsequent pH, production medium and stirrer speed study in fermentor by strains 106 and 115. Xanthan production and viscosity was dependent on the strain of X. arborícola pv pruni and on the operational condition used. The production medium B showed the best balance of yield and viscosity results, in orbital shaker, as well as in fermentor. The best results for both strains were obtained at pH 7, 600 rpm and 66 h of fermentation. The two strains showed potential for xanthan production. In an evaluation study of, physical and chemical characteristics, the xanthan produced by strain 115 was compared to the characteristics of the commercial xanthans, Roeper and Kelzan. The former is for application in food, pharmeceutical products and cosmetics and the latter for application in oilwell drilling fluids. The results were within the literature specified patterns, except by the low piruvate content of xanthan produced by strain 115, low monovalent salt content of Roeper sample and high divalent salt content of both commercial samples. The xanthans produced by X. arborícola pv pruni were evaluated as viscosifying fluid for use in oilwell drilling, in comparison to Duo Vis, Kelzan and Xanvis commercial brands. As a whole, the results obtained in this study show that the commercial polymers are more efficient when used in aqueous solution, since these polymers contain high salt concentrations. Xanthans produced by patovar pruni, Xc 106 600 and Xc 115 600, as having low salt concentration, they show potential for application in oilwell drilling fluid, when a salt solution was used, similar to the conditions of marine exploration.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the design of an operational dosimeter for surgeons operating under X-rays. X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen. Since then, they have been very employed, whether for checks carried out at airports or in the medical field. Very useful for treating people, they are not without danger whether it is for patients or hospital practitioners. Normally, patients are subjected occasionally to irradiation. On the other hand, some hospital practitioners are confronted with daily irradiation. A distinction is made here between “radiography” for diagnostic, who are normally protected during irradiation of the patient, and certain surgeons who use X-rays as a control during the operation and for whom they are close to the irradiated area. This is the issue that this thesis is interested in. The study that we are proposing in partnership with the digital science research laboratory GREYC and the School of Military Applications of Atomic Energy (EAMEA) both located in Cherbourg, is therefore intended to design and produce an X-ray detector for medical applications aimed at giving information for low dose and low energies. The simulation and validation (irradiation)part was done at EAMEA. The rest of the work took place within the GREYC laboratory which has acquired, for several years, real experience in the field of sensors. We started by performing Monte-Carlo simulations using the GEANT4 calculation code in order to define the optimal geometry of the sensor. Following these simulation results, we produced the sensor by rf magnetron sputtering by successive deposition of thin layers. The sensitive layer of the sensor was subject to Raman characterization, the results of which were compared with the literature. Once the sensor had been produced, we carried out a characterization under a flow of X-rays emitted from a continuous X-ray generator. The various tests with the generator continued made it possible to develop a signal acquisition chain in order to test the sensor under a pulsed radiation field in the Centre Hospitalier Public du Cotentin

Abstract:
Shared clusters represent an excellent platform for the execution of parallel applications given their low price/performance ratio and the presence of cluster infrastructure in many organisations. The focus of recent research efforts are on parallelism management, transport and efficient access to resources, and making clusters easy to use. In this thesis, we examine reliable parallel computing on clusters. The aim of this research is to demonstrate the feasibility of developing an operating system facility providing transport fault tolerance using existing, enhanced and newly built operating system services for supporting parallel applications. In particular, we use existing process duplication and process migration services, and synthesise a group communications facility for use in a transparent checkpointing facility. This research is carried out using the methods of experimental computer science. To provide a foundation for the synthesis of the group communications and checkpointing facilities, we survey and review related work in both fields. For group communications, we examine the V Distributed System, the x-kernel and Psync, the ISIS Toolkit, and Horus. We identify a need for services that consider the placement of processes on computers in the cluster. For Checkpointing, we examine Manetho, KeyKOS, libckpt, and Diskless Checkpointing. We observe the use of remote computer memories for storing checkpoints, and the use of copy-on-write mechanisms to reduce the time to create a checkpoint of a process. We propose a group communications facility providing two sets of services: user-oriented services and system-oriented services. User-oriented services provide transparency and target application. System-oriented services supplement the user-oriented services for supporting other operating systems services and do not provide transparency. Additional flexibility is achieved by providing delivery and ordering semantics independently. An operating system facility providing transparent checkpointing is synthesised using coordinated checkpointing. To ensure a consistent set of checkpoints are generated by the facility, instead of blindly blocking the processes of a parallel application, only non-deterministic events are blocked. This allows the processes of the parallel application to continue execution during the checkpoint operation. Checkpoints are created by adapting process duplication mechanisms, and checkpoint data is transferred to remote computer memories and disk for storage using the mechanisms of process migration. The services of the group communications facility are used to coordinate the checkpoint operation, and to transport checkpoint data to remote computer memories and disk. Both the group communications facility and the checkpointing facility have been implemented in the GENESIS cluster operating system and provide proof-of-concept. GENESIS uses a microkernel and client-server based operating system architecture, and is demonstrated to provide an appropriate environment for the development of these facilities. We design a number of experiments to test the performance of both the group communications facility and checkpointing facility, and to provide proof-of-performance. We present our approach to testing, the challenges raised in testing the facilities, and how we overcome them. For group communications, we examine the performance of a number of delivery semantics. Good speed-ups are observed and system-oriented group communication services are shown to provide significant performance advantages over user-oriented semantics in the presence of packet loss. For checkpointing, we examine the scalability of the facility given different levels of resource usage and a variable number of computers. Low overheads are observed for checkpointing a parallel application. It is made clear by this research that the microkernel and client-server based cluster operating system provide an ideal environment for the development of a high performance group communications facility and a transparent checkpointing facility for generating a platform for reliable parallel computing on clusters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The multigenerational workforce presents a critical challenge for business managers, and each generation has different expectations. A human resource management study of organizations with more than 500 employees reported 58% of the managers experiencing conflict between younger and older workers. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the multigenerational strategies used by 3 managers from a Franklin County, Ohio manufacturing facility with a population size of 6 participants. The conceptual framework for this study was built upon generational theory and cohort group theory. The data were collected through face-to-face semistructured interviews, company documents, and a reflexive journal. Member checking was completed to strengthen the credibility and trustworthiness of the interpretation of participants' responses. A modified van Kaam method enabled separation of themes following the coding of data. Four themes emerged from the data: (a) required multigenerational managerial skills, (b) generational cohort differences, (c) most effective multigenerational management strategies, and (d) least effective multigenerational management strategies. Findings from this study may contribute to social change through better understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of the primary generations in the workforce, and, in turn, improve community relationships.
