Chao, Lance Rolin. "Symmetric MultiProcessing for the Pintos Instructional Operating System." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/78293.

Full text
Abstract:
For the last decade, practical limitations have prevented processor speeds from increasing significantly. To increase throughput, the computing industry has turned to multiprocessing; that is, executing computations in parallel on separate processing units. Making use of these additional units requires support from the operating system (OS). Indeed, most modern operating systems do have the capability of recognizing and utilizing multiprocessor hardware. Pintos is an instructional operating system used by many institutions to teach important operating systems concepts. Pintos aims to increase student engagement by providing challenging programming projects in which students personally implement many core functionalities of an operating system. However, prior to this work, Pintos was a uniprocessor OS. This makes it difficult for Pintos to expose students to the same synchronization challenges that most modern kernel developers face. In addition, the first structured project, aimed at teaching scheduling policies, requires students to implement an uniprocessor variant of MLFQS scheduler which is no longer used in modern systems. We implemented Symmetric MultiProcessing (SMP) support in Pintos. We also created a new scheduling assignment to expose students to a multiprocessor proportional-share scheduling policy called Completely Fair Scheduler and to introduce them to the concept of load balancing. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of our new Pintos framework in augmenting students’ knowledge of OS scheduling and enhancing their ability to code and debug in a low-level environment.

Abstract:
The concept of sustainability is gaining visibility in recent years. Both society and companies are increasing their interest in every of its social, environmental, and economic dimensions. This interest is one of the reasons why the Circular Economy is escalating. One of the goals of this model of production and consumption is waste reduction through the creation of a closed-loop chain, where remanufacturing has a crucial role. Despite the benefits of remanufacturing, this process increases the complexity of the task, limiting access to this job due to the high level of knowledge required. This is the reason why Augmented Reality is presented in this thesis as a method to assist operators by guiding them and providing real-time feedback interactively. The main goal is to increase the efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility of this task. At the same time, this project aims to contribute to all dimensions of sustainability to a greater or lesser extent. To meet the objectives mentioned above, and keeping in mind the Design Science Research Methodology (DSRM), an artifact is created. The case of study is an assembly operation reproduced in the IRMA-demonstrator in ASSAR Innovation Arena in Skövde (Sweden). A set of Augmented Reality instructions have been designed to guide the operator through the assembly task. First, with the help of the software provided by Microsoft, Dynamics 365 Guides, and afterward, by using Unity. The software is compared, and an attempt is made to justify the implementation of AR, specifically in the remanufacturing assembly task. The results seem to point to a reduction of errors in the operation. Finally, conclusions are extracted based on previous studies and the analysis of the design and implementation of the set of instructions.

Jaunbral, Janis. "TELEMETRY SYSTEMS TRAINING PROGRAMS: THE KEY TO SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION AND OPERATION." International Foundation for Telemetering, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/608829.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1993 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada
In today's world, the importance of training for telemetry systems continues to grow as new technologies provide users with ever-increasing capabilities. Successful training programs ensure telemetry systems quickly become operational yielding the acquisition of critical test data. Over the years, training programs have been greatly impacted by the changes in defense contracts -- specifically funding. Today's aggressive telemetry market requires contractors to develop complex telemetry systems within the constraints of Firm Fixed price (FFP) contracts and within very short schedules. As a result of these conditions, training programs have changed significantly over the last ten years. Projects which used to have dedicated training personnel (instructors, technical writers, etc.) now rely on the system developers to provide the training. In actuality, the quality of training has improved with this new approach. Now students benefit from having the most knowledgeable personnel teach them about the system and, often times, latent problems with the system are efficiently identified and corrected. This paper will summarize the evolution of training programs for telemetry systems developed by Computer Sciences Corporation. The benefits of a scenario where the system architects train the end users with the use of increased "hands-on" training will be explored.

Jansson, Sofie, and Frida Delin. "Process for preparing work instructions : A multiple case study at Volvo Group Trucks Operations." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Logistik- och kvalitetsutveckling, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-118904.

Full text
Abstract:
A study made by Johansson, Fast-Berglund and Moestam (in press) shows that diversity regarding how information is used exists in global production networks. To be closer to markets, organizations have chosen to globalize their business which is one reason for why diversity arises. This because product types and brands historically have been different. One company that is currently working with improving consistency among processes is Volvo Group Trucks Operations (GTO). The company wants to evaluate how the process for preparing assembly work instructions looks like at different sites within their production network. This enables Volvo GTO to start their work towards a standardized process and uniformity. A starting point for this is to make a current state analysis of the process for preparing assembly work instructions when producing Volvo trucks, engines and transmissions in Sweden. The purpose is to identify key activities within the process and important factors to consider when standardizing the process. This is done on three sites, one for each area. Volvo GTO is the part of the Volvo Group that covers all production of engines and transmissions as well as the production of Volvo, Renault, Mack, and UD trucks. In 2012 the group choose to reorganize from brand based where each brand was an own organization to joint units, for example center of development, operations etc. This has led to a greater need of one common process for preparing assembly work instructions in order to create uniformity among the brands Volvo, Renault, Mack, and UD trucks. The result of the current state analysis shows that the process for preparing assembly work instructions is differently performed depending on the site studied. Despite this, some activities in each process are similar. These were found to be: design, review, time setting, time analysis, balancing, station marking, create assembly work instructions, and share information. Since some activities actually are similar, it would be possible to standardize the process for preparing assembly work instructions in the future. Important to consider when standardizing a process is to create awareness and involvement among employees. It is also important to have the management committed as well as uniformity among IT systems used when performing a process. One last thing to consider is that the process needs to be adaptable because sites are located all over the world and have different culture and regulations.

Bashkoff, Jessica (Jessica Leigh). "Reducing reworkable discrepancies through standard work for writing inspection instructions and data distribution." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/80990.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering; in conjunction with the Leaders for Global Operations Program at MIT, 2013.

Each aircraft on the final assembly line inevitably has minor build errors and deviations from the intended design. Errors, like these, that can be corrected on the line are called reworkable discrepancies. Because hundreds of reworkable discrepancies can occur on each aircraft it is a huge opportunity for improvement and cost reduction. It would be impossible to analyze each one that occurs on the line. However, last year at X Aerospace another researcher created a tool to categorize discrepancies by key words based on free form text describing them. Root cause analysis and corrective action teams were put in place for the highest driving discrepancies but a more exhaustive analysis was not conducted. In this research, to continue the root cause analysis, and gain a more detailed understanding of why discrepancies occur, a single aircraft was followed through final assembly and each discrepancy reviewed. Some key findings of this review were confirmation that the tool created previously was accurate, that there is a time lag between creation of a discrepancy and its discovery upon inspection, and that there is lack of access to specifications and data on the floor. To address the issues with late discovery of discrepancies, more specific and guided inspection instructions are needed. Standard work has been developed for writing inspection instructions that are clearer. They include features such as guided and general tasks, references to specs for all directive instructions, specific locations on the assembly and drawings, and symbols and wording to indicate instruction versus reference information and which contain only instructions relevant for the particular inspection. Changes in management have halted the implementation of the standard work for writing inspection instruction. However, this standard work became the basis for changes being made to improve work instructions. To address the lack of access to data, a tool which collects data and displays a cross Pareto heat map of the highest driving issues on each line, position, and work order has been developed. The line managers have been trained on how to use the tool to determine high driving issues in almost real time and implement corrective actions more quickly. In addition the tool is in use by quality engineers to help guide reduction efforts.

Abstract:
In addition to cancelations and delays of needed surgical procedures, serious or fatal complications can occur when patients with low health literacy do not comply with preoperative instructions. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to provide more insight about ways to decrease on cancelled and delayed surgical procedures in low health literacy patients' due to noncompliance with preoperative fasting instructions. The project was informed by the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance model (King, D. K., Glasgow, R. E., and Leeman-Castillo, B. (2010). The project question centered on whether health literate preoperative fasting instructions could decrease cancellations and delays of surgical procedures in low health literate patients. The project setting was conducted at a doctor's office. Interventions and changes to the preoperative instruction sheet were evaluated by using the preoperative communication checklist (POCC) which was developed for this project study. A 3-month pre-post POCC intervention design was used to evaluate changes in the numbers of cancelled and delayed surgical cases among 30 low health literate patients at a local community physician's office. The Newest Vital Sign which is a health literacy skill level assessment tool developed by Pfizer (2012), was used to assess patient health literacy. 30 (13 women and 17 men) who were aged 17-75 were enrolled. Pre-intervention, the and cancellation rate was 16.67%. Post intervention, there was a zero percent cancellation rate. This project has potential to produce positive social change by empowering patients with health literacy instructions for better understanding of what is being asked of them when having surgical procedures. This knowledge may result in better patient outcomes.

Abstract:
Volvo Group Trucks Operations is a subordinate organization to the Volvo Group concern, which is one of the world's largest manufactures of trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial engines. Volvo Group Trucks Operations organization encompasses all production of the Volvo Group’s engines and transmissions as well as all production of Trucks. Volvo Group Trucks Operations is looking into digitize the methods utilized for information handling within their assembly plant in Tuve, Sweden, and this thesis project part in the digitization process.  The currently used assembly work instructions at the assembly plant in Tuve are printed on paper and contains excessive amounts of information that makes it challenging for the assembly operators to consume the work instructions efficiently. Therefore, Volvo Group Truck Operations want look into the possibility to introduce dynamically adjustable and digital work instructions that could be tailor fitted to an operator's experience level and presented with smart technologies. The project is divided into two parts where the first part was assigned to identify the information need for smart process capable of generating dynamic digital work instructions and the second part to research how this information need could be satisfied with currently used simulation tools. The information needs analyses showed that the smart process needs to be divided into two sub-processes, one for gathering and processing production specific data into a fully detailed work instruction and the other one for filtering the fully detailed work instruction to tailor fit an operator independent of their skill level within assembly work. A framework containing three information aspects is stated to describe the information need for the smart process. These information aspects are Inputs, Smart process and Outputs. The information aspects are then further broken down into five required information areas that is important for the smart process functionality. The required information areas are Data, Attributes, Inputs, Instruction and Information structure and Instruction consummation. When combining the results for the information aspects and the required information areas, the framework for the smart process needed to be able to generate dynamic digital work instruction could be stated. Using the simulation software IPS IMMA to simulate a generic assembly demo case to generate and export production specific data in the human readable XML coding language showed that it is possible to satisfy the framework for the smart process. However, comparing the simulated data with the information need for the framework resulted in the discovery that the IPS IMMA version used in the project, PMTS event exporter, withholds information regarding the assembly work. The generated data provides information regarding movement distances, movement times and grip types when interacting with work objects. For the smart process to be able to generate fully detailed instructions it needs to be supplied with additional information regarding the work objects in action and directions of movements conducted during the assembly work. Despite this withhold of information from the export data, it would still be possible to fully satisfy the framework for the smart process. All the missing information is contained within the IPS IMMA hence the software needs an update that adds the additional information to the data export.

Abstract:
This qualitative study documents a classroom teaching experiment in a semester-long undergraduate mathematics education course for 16 prospective elementary school teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate how social aspects of the classroom environment facilitated the collective mathematical learning of place value and whole number operations by preservice elementary school teachers. Design-based research methodology was used for formulating the study. A hypothetical learning trajectory and instructional sequence related to place value and operations were created and refined in the two semesters prior to this study. The instructional sequence was in its third iteration for this study. The developmental levels that children progress through in learning place value and operations were used in identifying the learning trajectory and supporting tasks in which the preservice teachers were asked to engage. A large portion of the instructional sequence involved a setting of base eight instead of base ten. The sequence returned to base ten in order to discuss whole number operations and alternative strategies for operations in an effort to further develop the preservice teachers' conceptual understandings of place value and operations and to examine children's thinking strategies. Data were collected through video-taped recordings of class sessions, audio-taped recordings of table discussions and research team meetings, field notes, and journals written by the research team. Sixteen preservice teachers participated in the study which lasted over 5 class sessions of 3 hours and 10 minutes each. The emergent perspective which attempts to coordinate the individual learning and the social aspects of the classroom that support collective learning was used as an interpretive lens for data collection and analysis. The social aspects along with some aspects of individual student understandings together give an indication of collective mathematical understandings of the students as a whole group. Social norms established were: a) the expectation of providing explanations and justifications for solutions and solution methods, b) making sense of each other's solutions and c) asking questions of classmates or the instructor. Sociomathematical norms that were valued but not fully established were: a) criteria for different solutions and solution methods and b) criteria for what constituted a good explanation. Data analysis for the establishment of classroom mathematical practices was conducted using Toulmin's argumentation model (Toulmin, 1969). A three phase approach described by Rasmussen and Stephan (in press) was used in determining what constituted a classroom mathematical practice. The classroom mathematical practices that facilitated student learning in this study were: a) unitizing, b) flexibly representing numbers, and c) reasoning about operations. This study led to the refinement of the hypothetical learning trajectory and further progress in defining an instructional theory of how preservice teachers may come to understand place value and whole number operations.

Abstract:
At least three general subgroups of students display problems with their overall academic achievement: students with motivational deficits, students with academic performance deficits, and students with a combination of both types of deficits. The prevalence of students with both behavioral and learning problems has been reported to be between 10% and 25% and as high as 50%. The current study evaluated the effects of positive reinforcement and instructional strategies on the co-occurrence of motivational and academic deficits within three experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 were conducted with four school-aged children in a behavioral outpatient clinic. Experiment 3 was conducted with three school-aged children during extended behavioral evaluations. Experiment 1 evaluated the effects of positive reinforcement and an instructional strategy on the children's preference for academic work tasks and their academic performance. Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of instructional strategies on the children's problem behavior and academic performance. Experiment 3 evaluated the effects of positive reinforcement and instructional strategies on the children's preference for academic work tasks, academic performance, and problem behavior. The results of this study showed that (a) preference for an academic task changed with the addition of positive reinforcement (Experiment 3) or an instructional strategy (Experiment 1), (b) problem behavior decreased with the addition of an instructional strategy (Experiments 2 and 3), and (c) academic performance increased with the addition of an instructional strategy (all experiments). These results suggested that positive reinforcers and/or instructional strategies function as motivating operations by abolishing the value of negative reinforcement, thereby resulting in improved academic performance and decreased occurrences of problem behavior.

Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative study was to expand understanding of leadership behaviors and their influence on follower engagement. Researchers have shown that engagement is a predictor of retention and organizational performance. Leadership theory and the conceptual framework of worker engagement were the study's theoretical anchors. Despite a proliferation of leadership studies, engagement antecedents are largely unknown. The aim of this study was to narrow the gap in the literature by examining the extent to which there may be a relationship between college instructors' behaviors and student engagement. Although not traditionally regarded as frontline leaders, extant leadership literature affirmed college instructors' organizational position, role, and responsibilities as direct supervisors and students as their followers. The independent variables were instructor behavior, institutional support, and depth of learning. Student engagement was the dependent variable. Correlation and regression analysis were applied to existing survey data collected in 2014 from students who were enrolled in a diverse, urban community college located in a major metropolitan city in the United States. The most prominent finding, that leadership behaviors had the strongest correlation to student engagement, contributed to the body of leadership knowledge by reaffirming leadership behaviors as a predictor of follower engagement. Given the increasing diversity of workers and followers, this study's findings have the potential to help leaders more effectively engage followers who are members of historically marginalized groups, thereby, helping to narrow equity gaps and advance social justice, particularly in higher education.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I propose a team-based design curriculum that aligns with the cognitive development of middle school age students. The ability to think abstractly develops at a specific time in development, according to widely accepted cognitive theory. The middle school years are the launching pad of abstract thinking. At this age, students are also primed for learning through social activity. The design process often includes abstract problem solving challenges, and working within a team structure. These ideas build a foundation for a research question—could a team-based design curriculum in middle school strengthen students’ natural cognitive development by providing opportunities for adaptations through experiential learning? In this thesis, I propose a team-based design curriculum for middle school students, which follows a trajectory of concrete to abstract challenges, complementing the natural cognitive transition of this age.

In this article, we first compare our guidelines to the state of research in general and mathematics didactics. We then in vestigate their applicability to teaching operations research at university level, based on interviews with professors of the international operations research community.

Abstract:
The rising rate of the autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has resulted in challenges for teachers in public schools, concerning the delivery of evidence-based practices for superior outcomes. Thus, school districts are in need of professional learning options that can be efficiently and effectively delivered to improve the procedural fidelity of interventions. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using telepractice to teach autism teachers how to contrive motivating operations to teach manding to students with ASD. By utilizing multiple baselines across participants design, four autism teachers in public schools received intervention support through an online module along with video models as well as direct performance feedback from autism specialists via video-conferencing. The primary dependent variable was the percentage of correct responses from the instructional procedures of task analysis, and the secondary measure was the subsequent rate of student mands. Data were analyzed both visually (i.e., through the study of behavioral patterns) and statistically (i.e., analysis of effect size). Results indicate that telepractice increased accuracy of both teacher and student target responses.

Abstract:
The present study evaluated preference for choice and its effect on motivation during response acquisition of receptive identification targets in children diagnosed with autism. Prior to the study a multiple stimulus without replacement preference assessment was conducted in order to determine the highly preferred stimulus. Choice was evaluated during a high-preferred, free-choice, and control condition for each participant. During the high-preferred condition, participants were only able to work for the high-preferred stimulus identified during the MSWO. During free choice, participants could choose among the five items presented in the MSWO, and during control each participant was unable to exchange his or her tokens for reinforcement. Choice was also evaluated during a concurrent-chain arrangement, where each participant was able to choose the condition he or she wanted to work under. The results showed that two out of the three participants did not show differentiation during the acquisition phase; however, during the concurrent-chain phase, all three participants demonstrated a stronger preference for free choice.

Abstract:
An assessment of the standard voice instructor or performer collection of printed music would likely reveal numerous operatic repertoire volumes in anthology format appropriated to the primary four voice categories. However, thorough investigation divulges little in comparable printed material accessible to the countertenor. This scarcity of systemized collections is especially evident in the territory of comprehensive countertenor operatic repertoire. This project fills that present void by creating a compilation of sixteen countertenor arias drawn from various styles and historical periods for suggested application in studio instruction and performance. Perhaps, a more meaningful project intent is the presentation of a beneficial graded literature continuum resource for the studio teacher who instructs a countertenor in various stages of vocal development. For this purpose, each of the 16 arias is categorized into four difficulty levels based on considerations of range, tessitura, coloratura demands, rhythm, sustained phrase length, tonality, melodic considerations/overall musical difficulty, accompaniment support, and ornamentation requirements. The project also addresses common issues of pedagogy and ornamentation for voice teacher consideration when instructing a developing countertenor.

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study was to examine the degree to which those managing change for a distance learning initiative followed David Nadler's (1989) four action steps designed to reduce resistance in making the transition from the former operational state to a newly-created state.;The four action steps include providing opportunities for participation among employees, allowing employees to identify current operations that will not work in the new organizational state, rewarding behavior that assists in the transition, and allowing sufficient time for the change to take place. The findings in this study revealed that participation was the critical component that effected successful change.;Those units in which administrators encouraged employee participation in the transition were able to make adaptations in their operations that allowed for the development of effective and efficient student support services for distance learners. Employees were also very satisfied with the management of change provided by the administrators.;Those units in which administrators did not encourage employee participation in the transition were able to make adaptations for distance learners; however, the services provided were neither effective nor efficient. Further, employees were dissatisfied with the managers' styles in directing the change.;It is therefore recommended that managers involve employees whenever possible in their units' operations--decision-making, problem-solving, and transitions undertaken by the unit--for a productive and satisfied workforce.;Further research is suggested in employee participation and managerial style, as well as in women's leadership, and teamwork in organizations.

Abstract:
The overall success rate of implementing enterprise resource planning systems is about 30%. Guided by systems theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies used to ensure a successful implementation by information technology managers working in higher education settings. The data were derived from semistructured interviews of 6 managers and documentation from a higher education institution in the northeastern United States that successfully implemented an ERP system. Data analysis consisted of reviewing interview transcripts, from which themes and patterns were identified and coded. Three recurring factors arose throughout the analysis involved commitment, communication, and change management. The main themes included pre-implementation strategy activities, implementation strategies, post-implementation strategy activities, and continuous improvement. Managers engaged in enterprise resource planning systems implementations should frame the strategic approach with a strong commitment, effective communication, and a comprehensive change management plan throughout the process. The implications for positive social change include the potential to improve the institution's business processes, cultivate a more knowledgeable workforce, increase student academic experience, and improve the institution's performance overall.

Abstract:
In recent years, institutions of higher education have dramatically increased the number of online courses and degree programs offered to students, and yet it remains unclear what factors determine student satisfaction with online course and instructor effectiveness. Accordingly, the purpose of this exploratory correlation study was to examine how factors related to courses and instructors contributed to student perceptions of course quality (CQ) and instructor effectiveness (IE). Six stepwise regression procedures assessed the effects of specific course and instructor characteristics on perceptions of CQ and IE across one year of course evaluation data collected in a northeastern 2-year college. Results revealed that IE, quality of readings and assignments, and quality of threaded discussions had significant effects on CQ. In turn, student ratings of CQ, instructor-inspired interest in course material, and instructor availability and helpfulness had significant effects on IE. The results of the study can allow higher education administrators to make more effective decisions regarding online instruction and course structure, thus leading to increases in student persistence and success within online courses and programs.

Abstract:
Nowadays, network processors are an integral part of information technology. With the deployment of 5G network ramping up around the world, numerous new devices are going to take advantage of their processing power and programming flexibility. Contemporary information technology providers of today such as Ericsson, spend a great amount of financial resources on licensing deals to use processors with proprietary instruction set architecture designs from companies like Arm holdings. There is a new non-proprietary instruction set architecture technology being developed known as Risc-V. There are many open source processors based on Risc-V architecture, but it is still unclear how well an open-source Risc-V processor performs network packet processing tasks compared to an Arm-based processor. The main purpose of this thesis is to design a test model simulating and evaluating how well an open-source Risc-V processor performs packet processing compared to an Arm Cortex M7 processor. This was done by designing a C code simulating some key packet processing functions processing 50 randomly generated 72 bytes data packets. The following functions were tested: framing, parsing, pattern matching, and classification. The code was ported and executed in both an Arm Cortex M7 processor and an emulated open source Risc-V processor. A working packet processing test code was built, evaluated on an Arm Cortex M7 processor. Three different open-source Risc-V processors were tested, Arianne, SweRV core, and Rocket-chip. The execution time of both cases was analyzed and compared. The execution time of the test code on Arm was 67, 5 ns. Based on the results, it can be argued that open source Risc-V processor tools are not fully reliable yet and ready to be used for packet processing applications. Further evaluation should be performed on this topic, with a more in-depth look at the SweRV core processor, at physical open-source Risc-V hardware instead of emulators.

Abstract:

Computer architecture and assembly language programming microprocessor execution are basic courses taught in every computer science department. Generally, however, students have
difficulties in mastering many of the concepts in the courses, particularly students whose first language is not English. In addition to their difficulties in understanding the purpose of given
instructions, students struggle to mentally visualize the data movement, control and processing operations. To address this problem, this research proposed a graphical visualization approach
and investigated the visual illustrations of such concepts and instruction execution by implementing a graphical visualization simulator as a teaching aid. The graphical simulator developed during the course of this research was applied in a computer architecture course at Kabul University, Afghanistan. Results obtained from student evaluation of the simulator show significant
levels of success using the visual simulation teaching aid. The results showed that improved learning was achieved, suggesting that this approach could be useful in other computer science departments in Afghanistan, and elsewhere where similar challenges are experienced.

Abstract:
The St. Louis School District (SLSD) provided its students with a virtual education program (VEP) but abandoned it following a cut in federal funding, omitting an alternative pathway for students to complete their education. The problem addressed in this study was the effect of technology and management's decision to discontinue the VEP. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine management's role and the effect of the technology in discontinuing the VEP. Dewey's theory of education and Koskela and Howell's theory of management established the theoretical foundation for the study. A purposeful sampling selection approach was used to recruit 8 administrator and teacher participants who were knowledgeable about the VEP and who worked in their respective districts. An interview questionnaire was created and used to collect data. The data were processed and analyzed using the thematic analysis approach. The results revealed that technology was not a problem for the 3 school districts, but the SLSD did not prioritize the VEP in its budget. The results of this study might help other institutions keep their online program intact in the event a similar situation occurs. The implications for social change could be that securing a VEP could contribute in producing more well-educated citizens to work in higher-level jobs, drive business development, and contribute to community development in society.

Abstract:
The literature presented in the following pages explores the shortcomings of the American public education system in the context of creating long-term, sustainable social change. Using financial illiteracy and its relationship to low quality of life as an entry point, the first section exposes public schools’ shortcomings as agents of social change by delving into the hardships endured by the original public school promoters of the 19th century, the pitfalls of President George W. Bush’s 2001 enactment of No Child Left Behind, and the shortcomings of the financial literacy programming that found traction in urban schools following the subprime lending crisis. These examples render the public education system unfit to address social change, at which point the paper segues into a discussion of social enterprise and the new field’s demonstrated potential to capture social value. After a brief historical exploration of social innovation which examines some values and principles of this “fourth sector,” successful ventures and failed social organizations are scrutinized in the penultimate chapter. The comparisons made ultimately argue in favor of social entrepreneurship’s fitness, on both a structural and ideological level, in addressing the complex social, environmental, and cultural issues of our time.

Abstract:
Enrollment in online courses has increased rapidly in the last two decades, and exponentially in the last few years (Seaman, Allen, & Allen, 2018) as part of an e-revolution, especially in business schools (Kumar, Kumar, Palvia, & Verma, 2019), in which access to and use of information technology has become widespread. Instructors are one of the most important variables in online teaching as they function as the source of content for, and facilitators of, the online course. Some faculty, however, are ambivalent about teaching online for a variety of reasons (Mitchell, Parlamis, & Claiborne, 2015), and this ambivalence can be the impetus for the failure of the online course implementation. In addition, although research (“No significant difference”, n.d.) demonstrates that learning in online classes is comparable to learning in on-ground courses, instructors’ attitudes toward online teaching remain divided. In this chapter, I offer a brief review of Mitchell et al. (2015) and its general recommendations for management educators to help overcome their resistance to online teaching. I then expand upon what was previously written by sharing specific recommendations and resources focused on faculty, and for administrators to use with faculty, as they attempt the change to online teaching. To this end, I begin with a discussion of the notion of fit in the context of selecting faculty with a particular set of characteristics that are best suited to teaching online courses. The next portion of the chapter offers a research-derived list of best practices for new online instructors – addressing both hard and soft issues. Next, the discussion continues with a brief review of additional factors pertinent to teaching online but not included in the previous list. This will include topics gleaned both from research and over a decade and a half of personal online and hybrid experience as a management educator.

Abstract:
The purpose of this case study was to explore faculty attitudes toward online learning in a Lebanese Higher Education Institution (HEI). The research problem addressed the disinterest among faculty at the Arts, Sciences, and Technology University of Lebanon (AUL) in enhancing learning using online technology. The research questions for this study explored the attitudes of the faculty toward applying online learning and the extent of the faculty readiness to adopt this technological change. A qualitative case study design was used that employed multiple sources of information including semi-structured interviews and existing literature. The target population was AUL faculty including full-time instructors and administration (n = 25). Data analysis was guided by the lens of Kanter's theoretical approach, which focused on the ADKAR model for adopting change in faculty's awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement. Key findings indicated negative faculty impressions concerning online learning authority over technology use, culture, and changes such as increased enrollment and different teaching styles. Despite these findings, opportunity for the adoption of online learning was identified. Faculty indicated positive elements, such as the competitive advantage to be the first online institution in the Lebanese Market and higher student enrollment. These results may encourage AUL's faculty to adopt online learning and to follow the educational development steps taken worldwide. This study contributes to social change by expanding the ability of AUL and Lebanese students to compete globally.

Abstract:
Millions of dollars have been spent to acquire educational computing tools, and many education, government, and business leaders believe that investing in these computing tools will improve teaching and learning. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether charter school educators face technological barriers hindering them from incorporating technology into their classrooms. If they experienced self-efficacy issues integrating technology in their classrooms and if they believed their students were technologically prepared as 21st century professionals. A 5-point Likert scale survey, validated by a pilot study, was completed by 61 charter high school teachers. Their responses were analyzed, scores from the individual mean responses were used to calculate the total mean; and a parametric t test used to determine if the null or alternative hypothesis could be rejected. The theoretical foundation for this study was Cubans' and Brickners' first- and second-order barriers to change. In one charter school stratum, teachers experienced barriers integrating technology into their classes, while teachers in the other charter school strata did not. There was statistical significance in teachers' beliefs about their skills integrating technology into their classes and their students being technologically prepared as 21st century professionals. The results of this research could lead to positive social change by providing valuable information to help charter school administrators identify teachers who are experiencing barriers and how they can improve teacher's professional development integrating technology into their classrooms.

Abstract:
An important approach to prepare new managers for increased responsibility is participation in online management development programs; however, there is a lack of information about the factors that affect employee completion of these programs. This study addressed how chief executive officers (CEOs) can implement these programs to rapidly develop new managers who are qualified to serve in the leadership roles left behind by many retirees. This qualitative descriptive case study explored employees' perceptions about persistence in an online management development certificate program at a U.S. nonprofit organization. Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory and Rovai's composite persistence model provided the conceptual framework for the study. The research questions addressed how employees' perceptions of persistence in an online management development program affected success rates and what steps CEOs could take to incentivize employees to complete the program. A combination of 12 semi-structured interviews, program data, and member checking was used for the data collection. Data were analyzed using Yin's 6 steps and constant comparative data analysis methods. Key results indicated that student persistence in the online program was affected by purpose and meaning, coaching and support, course relevance, barriers, learning preferences, motivation and readiness; and incentivized by CEOs conveying their perceived value of the online program directly to employees. This research has implications for positive social change: CEOs can better understand the persistence factors employees need to prepare for and complete online management development certificate programs that support the transition to higher-level management positions.

Operation instructions plays an important role in the relationship among users, designers and products, thereby enjoying an increasingly wide application. The quality of an operation instruction has a huge impact on the user satisfaction towards a product. The aim of this study is to improve the illustrative efficiency of the operation instruction by finding the effective design principles for better understanding. Different from normal product instructions, the operation instruction cannot be designed only based on the cognition about the conveyed information. The design of operation instruction shall consider the accuracy of visual perception after the information are transferred into graphic symbols, the impacts of the conversion between 2D and 3D space on users’ understanding about the operation, which is required to guide users to make corresponding hand action, as well as the experience of users during the operation process, etc. Hence, the design of operating instruction is comprehensive which involves various fields like visual perception. The experiment takes the operation instruction of self-assembly furniture as the test sample. Based on the statistic analysis of the actual operation and interview of subjects, the design indexes influencing the conveying efficiency of instruction are summarized. Also, design principles that are able to improve the conveying efficiency of operating instruction are obtained finally according to the analysis on subjective opinion.

Crosstalk comes from coupling capacitance between parallel wires, and is getting more and more important as technologies continue to shrink. According to simulation result, eliminating all crosstalk in 10nm technology can bring delay reduction ranging from 22.62% to 83.47%. Many researches have been published to alleviate crosstalk. However, some of them, like shield insertion and encoder/decoder, incur extra hardware overhead, and others focusing on low power do not handle crosstalk. In this thesis, we propose an innovative algorithm of operation and functional codes assignment to minimize crosstalk and reduce dynamic power on instruction buses. Our algorithm °ow includes target benchmark pro‾ling, adjacency and resource graph generation, clique partition, and code assignment. Experimental results show that our algorithm can decrease 4C crosstalk from 32.70% to 67.10%, 3C crosstalk from 21.93% to 36.32%, and bit transitions from 4.63% to 6.69%, respectively.

In the spirit of open education, the choice of the computer software for school classes is supposed to be multiple, especially the operating system. At present, the only choice of using “Windows” in all primary schools and junior high schools might bring to students the misconception about operating system. In addition, it is quite a good choice to teach with the assistance of freeware under the condition of limited expenses budget and without adding any burden to students. Therefore, schools and students don’t need to spend much money on computer software. Linux is a free, freely-sperad, and powerful operating system. It can work with a large number of freeware, and execute the graph interface of X Window. It can also be used as the school server, as well as the working platform of students’ computers. This research construct a computer lab, where Linux is used as the operating system. The subjects of this research are sixty seventh-grade students from two different groups. We observe their learning outcomes. The experiment proceeds for a semester. The main courses include “computer graph” ”Internet” “Homepage” and “word processing”. For the control group, Windows operating system and other relative software are used. As for the experimental group, they are taught the Linux operating system and its applications. After the courses are finisher, the researcher compare the test scores on “computer graph”, “Homepage” and “word processing” between the control group and the experimental group. The result shows that the score on “computer graph” of the Linux group is higher than that of the Windows group; however, there is no significant difference between the two groups when referring to the scores of “Homepage” and “word processing”.

In designing mobile embedded systems, due to the requirement for low cost, low power, and high performance, 32-bit fixed-point processors with RISC architecture are used in these systems. As a result, the precision of these 32-bit processors is not sufficient for high-precision applications. To overcome this precision problem, this thesis proposes to implement long word-length arithmetic instructions on a 32-bit processor by adopting residue number system (RNS) arithmetic with moduli set {2n+1-1,2n,2n-1,2n-1-1}. By using custom instructions, we designed the function blocks of RNS addition, subtraction, multiplication, binary-to-residue conversion, and residue-to-binary conversion, and added these instructions to the Nios II processor on an Altera DE2 board. Due to the carry-free and independent properties, the speed of the long word-length (64-bit) arithmetic operations can be enhanced. To compare the performance of our designed 64-bit RNS instructions with the 64-bit fixed-point instructions, we choose matrix multiplications for our experiment. In most cases, the speed of the 64-bit RNS instructions can be 1.07 to 2.46 times the speed of the fixed-point instructions with 32-bit multiplier or pure software implementation. However, if 64-bit multipliers are used in the fixed-point instructions, the RNS instructions will be a little slower. This results show that the proposed long word-length RNS instructions have some speed advantage in performing consecutive multiplication and addition operations.

Since the promotion of the professional development of teachers’ evaluation in 2009, the types of teachers' professional learning communities have changed from the original task-oriented or the single school form because of the popularity of community network. Community networks Teachers who had the same need in professional development were connected through community networks. The establishment of the teacher communities became cross school and cross county, and their community organizations and modes of operation were different from those of a single-schooled teacher’s community. In this study, there were seven cross school teacher’s professional learning community from senior high schools in Taipei City taken as the objects of study. They were established for 2.5 years or 2 years and were all to change the teaching and curriculum in the classroom as a goal. Through the collection of questionnaires, the study was to understand the background of the community and community members, teaching and community operation, and to understand the relationship between members of the community. Through interviews with the core members of the community, the study was to analyze the formation, setting goals, operation, output, and the community teachers’ teaching change in these communities. And the study also took the chemistry teachers’ learning professional community as the focus group, through the application of the core members of the interview, field observation, to analyze the community learning culture for the community members of the teaching changes. The results of the study showed that the operation of the teacher’s professional community can be discussed by the concept of community members, the purpose of community formation, the establishment of members, the connotation of community development, the relationship among members, the community leadership and the future outlook of the community. Cross school teacher community focused on the purpose of co-preparation in the preparation for class. The community operations focused on classroom teaching. By decentralized leadership, community members shared the work of the community, and had expectations for the future development of the community. It can be found from the study of the cross school chemistry teachers' community that when the community operation pattern belongs to the convergence-diversity-type, the growth of the members of the community would move towards the expected target, and the teaching of the members of the community would change. Cross school teachers learned the advantages of community integrated entity and network community operation, resulting in breadth and depth of learning. The results of the study were expected to provide suggestions for the future cross-school teacher learning community and teacher development community so that teachers can implement curriculum and teaching changes in addition to professional development.

In respond to the Ministry of Education’s attention to analyze students'' learning abilities, and attempts to narrow individual differences among students, the researcher believe that teacher may carry out action research to arouse students'' interest in learning mathematics. This study is an action research, the researcher is also the instructor, with subjects being 24 grade 5 elementary school students. The researcher designed 3 math games to integrate into teaching in during flexible weekly course. Finally, the researcher collects and analysis data (mathematical learning interest scale, math unit test, worksheets for mathematical games, feedback for mathematical games, record on students’ interviews, classroom observation notes and teaching reflections records) to answer 3 research questions. The findings were three: First, integrating games into mathematics instruction is feasible. In the process of teaching practice, the researcher observed that students are more willing to express their opinion when playing games. The teacher realized that the integration can change the learning environment in the classroom, make math learning not boring. Second, according to the unit math test scores on mathematics learning achievements, students made progress in different units. When student''s interests in game is higher they the performance of students'' learning achievements was enhanced. Third, according to the pretest and posttest scores of learning interests scale for the paired samples t test, the average scores on cognitive, affective, action dimensions increased, but only the cognitive dimension increased significantly. Finally, the researcher included recommendations for future research and teaching.

The research aimed at using the adaptive learning platform to diagnose and remedy learning weaknesses of students adaptively, and evaluating the effect of the adaptive remedial instruction with this platform. This platform was developed by National Taichung University of Education and funded by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. In this study, the diagnostic testing and adaptive remedial instruction experiment were conducted based on the knowledge structure of the mixed operations with integers unit provided by the adaptive learning platform for seventh graders. In the process of learning, the system could provide individual diagnostic report as feedback immediately and online adaptive remedial media. The participants of experiment were seventh graders of six classes from three different junior high schools in Taichung city. There were 74 students in the experimental group and 67 students in the control group, and totally were 141 participants. All participants needed to use the computer systems to conduct the pre-test to diagnose misconceptions and skills. Next, in the experimental group, the adaptive remedial instruction was implemented according to the individual diagnostic report of the pre-test. Following the adaptive remedial instruction, the students then took a computerized post-test to evaluate the effect of the adaptive remedial instruction. In contrast to the experimental group, traditional remedial instruction for whole-class was used in the control group. The research results were as follows: 1. Through the application of adaptive remedial teaching, the difference between pre-test and post-test scores reached a significant level. With the conditions of different abilities and gender, there were also significant improvements through adaptive remedial teaching using adaptive learning platform. It represented that the learning performance of students with different abilities and gender could be significantly improved after adaptive remedial instruction. In addition, all competence indicators involving in this unit also were significantly improved except competence indicator “7-n-10”. 2. Overall, the average of learning performance in the experimental group was better than that in the control group. Moreover, excepting competence indicator “7-n-08”, for remainder competence indicators, the experimental group also was significantly better than the control group. 3. In the responses of the teaching feedback , more than 78% of students had positive attitudes towards the adaptive learning platform. They felt that the platform could give them diagnostic reports immediately when they got the wrong answers, and provided more assistance during learning process. There were also comments from students stating that the platform gave them more time to repeatedly review the teaching videos which were unclear instructions given by their teachers.
