Abstract:
This work proposes a methodology to evaluate the performance of operating wind farms via the use of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA) and modeled data. The potential annual energy is calculated per individual turbine considering underperforming/loss events to have their power output in accordance with a representative derived operational power curve. Losses/underperformance events are calculated and categorized into several groups aiming at identifying and quantify their causes. The methodology requires both anemometry data from SCADA system as well as modeled data. The discrepancy of the data representing the valid points of the power curve is taken into consideration as well when assessing the performance, i.e. wind speed vs power output of events that are not loss/underperformance. Production loss and relative standard deviation of power output of what is defined as “valid sample” in this work (per each turbine) are the main results obtained in this work. Finally, a number of optimization measures are suggested in order to enhance the performance, which can lead to a boost in the financial output of a wind farm. Aiming at judging the reliability of the proposed methodology, a case study is conducted and evaluated. The investigated case study shows that the methodology is capable of determining potential energy and associated losses/underperformance events. Several questions were raised during the assessment and are discussed in this report, recommendation for optimization measures are presented at the end of the study. Also, a discussion on the limitations and uncertainties associated to the presented methodology and the case study.

Abstract:
The complexity of integrated system on-chips as well as commercial processor’s architecture has increased dramatically in recent years. Thus, the effort for assessing the susceptibility to faults due to the incidence of spatial charged particles in these devices has growth at the same rate. This work presents a comparative analysis of soft errors susceptibility in the commercial large-scale embedded microprocessor ARM Cortex-A9 single core, widely used in critical applications, performing a set of 11 applications developed for a bare metal environment and the Linux operating system. The soft errors analysis is performed by fault injection in OVPSim simulation platform along with the OVPSim-FIM fault injector, able to randomly select the time and place to inject the fault. The fault injection campaign reproduces thousands of bit-flips in the microprocessor register file during the execution of the benchmarks set, with a diverse code behavior ranging from control flow dependency to data intensive applications. The analysis method is based on comparing applications executions where faults were injected with a fault-free implementation. The results show the error rate classified by their effect as: masked (UNACE), crash or loss of control flow (HANG) and silent data corruption (SDC); and by register locations. By separating latent errors by its location in the results and exceptions detected by the operating system, one can provide new better observability for a large-scale processor. The proposed method and the results can guide software developers in choosing different code architectures in order to improve the fault tolerance of the embedded system as a whole.

How do the various categories of operating expenses for institutional grade office buildings vary with changes in rental income and occupancy? The general consensus held is that, following the linear relationship that exists between variable expenses, occupancy and income; a change in either occupancy or income would result in a change in variable expenses. The question is by how much and in what direction? This thesis contributes to answering that question by exploring how tax, utility, insurance and maintenance expenses for office properties, across key markets in the United States, vary with rental income and occupancy level changes. To achieve this, time-series data on income and expense data for office properties from Q1 2000 to Q4 2014 was analyzed using two panel regressions. One with fixed effects for buildings to exclude all idiosyncratic characteristics of properties and another with fixed effects for time that captured the building differences. The analysis shows that the elasticities of these expenses to changes in income and occupancy vary across expense type and also across geographic location. Additionally, in majority of the cases, these elasticities were statistically significant.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
This work project focuses in operating profitability of branded pharmaceuticals, measured by return on assets (ROA). It gives insights about key ROA drivers, by breaking down this ratio into gross sales margin, assets turnover and operating risk. Data from consolidated financial statements of 26 US- and European-based firms for the period 2007-2011 is used in univariate and bivariate analyses. Results suggested that firm size and country-membership do not significantly correlate with ROA. However, differences between branded pharmaceuticals’ regions are explored and significant correlations are found between operating profitability and strategic choices variables, namely product portfolio diversification, growth choices and investment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Nuclear Engineering, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references.
The objective of this thesis is to clarify the ways that organizational factors influence nuclear power plant performance in order to improve performance. Therefore, this thesis studied the nuclear power plant organizational environment by identifying and detailing its important work processes. These work processes are: the Work Request Work Process; the Condition Reporting Work Process; the External Operating Experience Work Process; the Design Change Process; and the Procedure Change Work Process. Using this information, a methodology of incident investigation that targets organizational deficiencies contributing to events was developed. Using this methodology to analyze recent significant incidents, a list of important organizational factors and the context within which they influence the successful completion of tasks was identified. These factors and the context within which they influence performance are: 1) Communication-Pervasive-Most important between different units and departments; 2) Formalization-Execution; 3) Goal Prioritization-Prioritization; 4) Problem Identification-Planning, scheduling, and return to normal line-up; 5) Roles and Responsibilities-Execution; and 6) Technical Knowledge (job specific knowledge and broad based knowledge)-Job specific knowledge-execution/Broad based knowledge -prioritization, planning, scheduling, and other tasks. Although safety culture and organizational learning are not listed, they are important.
(cont.) The reason for their exclusion was that they are not single organizational factors useful when cited in incident investigations. Rather, safety culture is a term used to describe all organizational factors, including organizational structure that impact performance. Similarly, organizational learning was excluded because it is a collection of programs, processes, individual attitudes and culture responsible for learning. Although organizational learning was not listed, it was studied resulting in the development of the Utilization of Operating Experience Work Process. The Utilization of Operating Experience Work Process consists of the following seven steps: 1) Identification; 2) Screening/Prioritization/Dissemination; 3) Investigation/Evaluation; 4) Development; 5) Implementation; 6) Closeout; and 7) Verification/Validation. Since prioritization was identified as important in the above work process and the analysis of significant events, a methodology for the prioritization of work activities at nuclear power plants was developed. This methodology produces a prioritization tool that assigns a numerical performance index to each item requiring prioritization is developed. Applying the methodology at Seabrook Station produced a tool that allowed those who prioritize external operating experience to more efficiently and accurately prioritize. In addition to the success of the application at Seabrook, a workshop held at MIT with experts in prioritizing external operating experience who further validated the methodology and the resulting tool.

Abstract:
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis is one of the most widely used methods in evaluating the accuracy of a classification method. It is used in many areas of decision making such as radiology, cardiology, machine learning as well as many other areas of medical sciences. The dissertation proposes a novel nonparametric estimation method of the ROC surface for the three-class classification problem via Bernstein polynomials. The proposed ROC surface estimator is shown to be uniformly consistent for estimating the true ROC surface. In addition, it is shown that the map from which the proposed estimator is constructed is Hadamard differentiable. The proposed ROC surface estimator is also demonstrated to lead to the explicit expression for the estimated volume under the ROC surface . Moreover, the exact mean squared error of the volume estimator is derived and some related results for the mean integrated squared error are also obtained. To assess the performance and accuracy of the proposed ROC and volume estimators, Monte-Carlo simulations are conducted. Finally, the method is applied to the analysis of two real data sets.

Abstract:

The objective of this work is to analyze the performance of HDLC Balanced Class of Procedures under saturated, full-duplex transmission on error prone links. This thesis extends work done by Bux et al. [8] by considering errors on both the links. Satellite links have long propogation delays compared to terrestrial links, and hence, have longer error recovery times. For such links, errors in acknowledgements have considerable impact on the throughput. In this analysis, the effect of errors in acknowledgements is taken in to consideration. An analytical approach is used to derive performance measures. The concept of "virtual transmission time" introduced by Bux et al is redefined to accommodate the effect of errors in acknowledgements and used in the analysis. Resulting throughput calculations show how various parameters, (e.g. transmission rate, propagation delay, error rate and packet size), interact and determine the performance.

Fewtrell, James. "An experimental analysis of operating conditions in cold roll-forming." Thesis, Aston University, 1990. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/11920/.

Full text
Abstract:
A detailed literature survey confirmed cold roll-forming to be a complex and little understood process. In spite of its growing value, the process remains largely un-automated with few principles used in set-up of the rolling mill. This work concentrates on experimental investigations of operating conditions in order to gain a scientific understanding of the process. The operating conditions are; inter-pass distance, roll load, roll speed, horizontal roll alignment. Fifty tests have been carried out under varied operating conditions, measuring section quality and longitudinal straining to give a picture of bending. A channel section was chosen for its simplicity and compatibility with previous work. Quality measurements were measured in terms of vertical bow, twist and cross-sectional geometric accuracy, and a complete method of classifying quality has been devised. The longitudinal strain profile was recorded, by the use of strain gauges attached to the strip surface at five locations. Parameter control is shown to be important in allowing consistency in section quality. At present rolling mills are constructed with large tolerances on operating conditions. By reduction of the variability in parameters, section consistency is maintained and mill down-time is reduced. Roll load, alignment and differential roll speed are all shown to affect quality, and can be used to control quality. Set-up time is reduced by improving the design of the mill so that parameter values can be measured and set, without the need for judgment by eye. Values of parameters can be guided by models of the process, although elements of experience are still unavoidable. Despite increased parameter control, section quality is variable, if only due to variability in strip material properties. Parameters must therefore be changed during rolling. Ideally this can take place by closed-loop feedback control. Future work lies in overcoming the problems connected with this control.

The high-tech industry is the competitive strength as well as major profit source for countries in the world. However, these companies face a lot of uncertainties including market demands, technology progress and new competitors that bring new strategies and technology into the market. Consequently, all these elements cause intense competition within the industry. Companies that do not keep up with the trend of changes will be left behind and be forced to exit the market. In high-tech industries, players should not only take into consideration the cost of developing new technology, profit procurement, market competition, but also need to create innovative tactics to break the existing formed game rules in order to create additional market profit and strengthen long term competitiveness. That is the reason why manufacturers of smart phone and licensors of mobile OS platform have been continuously seeking innovative tactics and methods to lower costs. Game theory and its analysis can be used as tools to reflect the relations between operation tactics and costs and is an important basis for managerial decisions. This thesis applies the game theory to propose a tactics selection approach, analyzing data such as mobile OS platform price, licensee''s corresponding cost, licensor''s market share and overall market demand, and using business revenue to assess effectiveness. In addition, this thesis uses game theory to predict when a new and different competition appears in the market which causes irreversible change in market trend, what the anticipated pay-off would be when different tactics are adopted by players in order to preserve market share and maintain profitability. This research concludes that, market leaders as well as market followers will all adopt aggressive tactics to maintain or increase market shares by giving up license fees and adopt open OS platforms which in turn will bring in other revenue such as commercial income. However, unexpected risks need to be considered in order to contain cost and maintain profitability.

In the field of optical imaging, depth of field (DOF) height is a common indicator utilizing identify image quality. Focal length of shooting, light source position and the size of lens aperture, etc., directly affect the depth of field. In the case of general photography, it is common that images out of focus caused by human factors. This thesis proposes an algorithm based on the identification and calculation of image depth field utilizing variation of unit gradient. In the stage of image analysis, utilizing B-spline algorithm to fix image displacement caused by human factors and select an image with best quality among several images. Utilizing algorithm of image gradient to computed the image after registration and assessed the amount of depth field in a ROI and selected an image with the maximum variation of unit gradient as the final selection. This thesis compared the image DOF in simulation with actual shooting. Standard deviation of the gradient variation in the image recognition process obviously found that less than 0.01mm. In order to apply this technique in all kinds camera lens and microscope to accurate image DOF with a better accuracy. This algorithm can be applied on mobile communication and offered users a better image recognition threshold in the selecting process with expectation.

In nowday world with rapidly change of financial environment, China’s legislation in financial sector is getting stricter and stricter. There are many challenges in China , such as the increasing numbers of foreign competitors in financial market and the damage caused by financial tsunami. It is fasting and worthwhile to understand how did state-owned banks in China rank top ten in the world by its market value through the support of the Chinese government. Our research focuses on understanding the performance of each bank by Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) during the year 2008 to 2012. We also select Interest expense , personnel expenses, fixed assets and overdue loans as input variables and set interest income, non-interest income and total investment as output variables. At the same time , we use historical analysis and reviews to find out the impact on banks’ performance cause by government’s financial monitoring system , developing policy, and marketing strategies. To start with our research has found that the Chinese government provides more supportive policies on financial industry to enhance the banks’ quality and thus help to keep the banks in certain scale. Furthermore, regarding the achievement of the fully efficiency, CCR Model has 24 DMUS, BCC MODEL has 32 DMUs . It’s account for around 40%. If we include the “efficiency value ”over 0.9 and above, it can reach to 70%.Therefore, it shows the “full achievement ”does not make much difference. However, based on the sensitivity analysis done in our research, the interest expense of input elements have significant effects on banks achievement efficiency. Due to the fact that the china bank industry still makes profits in traditional deposit and loan operation and most of their revenue comes from the Interest Rate Margin. Therefore , it’s important to be in control on interest payment.

After the negotiation scheme between Taiwan and Mainland starting to rework, Taiwan marine industry is on the turning point of long term growth. Based on the financial data from 1999 to 2007, our research applies DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) method to evaluate the management performance of operating efficiency of the companies in Taiwan marine industry. Our CCR and BCC model show that almost marine companies are on the efficient economic scale, excluding U-ming and Shin Wei. From the slack variable analysis, Shin Wei needs to lower its fixed assets to achieve the long-term economic scale. On the other hand, from our Malmquist production index analysis, our research shows some different issues. The rating for operation of Taiwan marine industry show volatility from 1999 to 2007, depending on different scale ,order base ,strategic alliance and management.

Light emitting diode (LED) lighting technology is a revolutionary technology, LED has the advantages of mercury-free, energy saving and long life. In recent years, the green industry has started to become one of the Governments’ policies of the spindle. Based on the above-mentioned advantages of LED, coupled with the huge market opportunities, the industry is being in the growth stage of contending. Production of LED industry in Taiwan has reached the world's first and output value has reached the world's second. It can be seen, Taiwan has been playing important role in the global LED industry competition, also the most potential to become a trillion dollar industry in Taiwan. In order to maintain its competitive edge and retain its leading position, Taiwan's LED manufacturers must understand its operating performance and continuously improve in the global competition of the LED. This research uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist model to evaluate the efficiency of LED firms in Taiwan from 2007 to 2011. Base on the result of dataanalysis﹐ firms can understand its operating efficiency, and then to improve operating efficiency for those firms whose operating efficiency behind others’ accordingly. The empirical dataof using CCR and BCC models showed that BRIGHT was the only firm whose overall technical efficiency in each year between 2007 to 2011 were maintained at score 1. Meaning that Bright are relatively efficient manufacturers during the past five years. Considering CCR and BCC models can not handle cross-year data analysis, so we use the Malmquist productivity index to process the cross-year data analysis.According to empirical dataof using the Malmquist Productivity Index from 2007 to 2011, Malmquist productivity index to improve the most were the Unity (1.007) and Para (1.007). The MPI getting declined the most was Huga (0.838).

The growth of information technology and the comprehension of the internet resulted in the rise of Tablets and Smart Phones. The market has become more competitive in PC industry, especially in Notebook industry. ODM was further impacted seriously. The development of Notebook is confronting the key turning point. To maintain the advantage in the industry, it is imperative to improve the competitive ability and the efficiency of operation. The research is covering 5 ODM factories, including Wistron, Compal, Inventec, Quanta, and Pegatron, to analyze their operating efficiency during 2008 – 2012. Use DEA method by and Malmquist Productivity Index to evaluate the operating performance and the movement of productivity during different periods. It is expected to analyze the operating performance in the past for the 5 companies respectively. The result may be the basis of operating guidelines and may be the reference of raising efficiency for Notebook companies. Two variables, fixed assets and the number of employees, were input and the one variable, operating net income, was output. It revealed Compal maintained its standard above the target of the efficiencies of whole techniques, pure techniques, and scale techniques. However, not only the scale efficiency slipped in Quanta but the efficiency of whole techniques descended. Some aspects need to be improved by the rest companies. Regarding the movement of the efficiency from 2008 to 2012, productivity of 2 companies, i.e. Compal and Pegatron, growed, and productivity of the other 3 companies, i.e. inventec, Quanta, and Wistron, slipped. The average of productivity increased from the aspect of the movement on pure technique index during 2008 – 2012. If it was only focused on the movement of productivity, it had the downward trend in the first 3 years but had a pick up from the fourth year.

How to promote the operating efficiency of bank branches with the least input and the maximum output is the most important thing on banking management. In this study, we used the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis model to estimate operating efficiency of bank branches, with the monthly financial data of Jan.2003 to Dec.2004, and adopted intermediation approach to choose input and output variables. The four output variables were interest income, fee income, sale amount of mutual fund and deposits. The three input variables were interest expense, number of customers and labor expense. The major empirical results were as followed. (1) The source of the technical inefficiency mainly came from pure technical inefficiency. (2) Most of the branches didn’t represent constant returns to scale, still have the space to improve. (3) Adjust the combination of input and output variables to the appropriate status by slack movement analysis. (4) No matter AUM(assets under management ) or Location of the bank branches didn’t have the obvious correlation with operating efficiency.

"Operating risk analysis of wind integrated generation systems." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2014-01-1408.

Full text
Abstract:
Wind power installations are growing rapidly throughout the world due to environmental concerns associated with electric power generation from conventional generating units. Wind power is highly variable and its uncertainty creates considerable difficulties in system operation. Reliable operation of an electric power system with significant wind power requires quantifying the uncertainty associated with wind power and assessing the capacity value of wind power that will be available in the operating lead time. This thesis presents probabilistic techniques that utilize time series models and a conditional probability approach to quantify the uncertainty associated with wind power in a short future time, such as one or two hours. The presented models are applied to evaluate the risk of committing electric power from a wind farm to a power system. The impacts of initial wind conditions, rising and falling wind trends, and different operating lead times are also assessed using the developed methods. An appropriate model for day-ahead wind power commitment is also presented. Wind power commitment for the short future time is commonly made equal to, or a certain percentage, of the wind power available at the present time. The risk in meeting the commitment made in this way is different at various operating conditions, and unknown to the operator. A simplified risk based method has been developed in this thesis to assist the operator in making wind power commitments at a consistent level of risk that is acceptable to the system. This thesis presents a methodology to integrate the developed short-term wind models with the conventional power generation models to evaluate the overall operational reliability of a wind integrated power system. The area risk concept has been extended to incorporate wind power, evaluate the unit commitment risk and the well- being indices of a power system for a specified operating lead time. The method presented in this thesis will assist the operator to determine the generator units and the operating reserve required to integrate wind power and meet the forecast load for a short future time while maintaining an acceptable reliability criterion. System operators also face challenges in load dispatch while integrating wind power since it cannot be dispatched in a conventional sense, and is accepted as and when present in current operational practices. The thesis presents a method to evaluate the response risk and determine the unit schedule while satisfying a specified response risk criterion incorporating wind power. Energy storage is regarded as an effective resource for mitigating the uncertainty of wind power. New methods to incorporate energy storage with wind models, and with wind-integrated power system models to evaluate the wind power commitment risk and unit commitment risk are presented in this thesis. The developed methods and the research findings should prove useful in evaluating the operating risks to wind farm operators and system operators in wind integrated power systems.

High power LED(Light Emitting Diode) can be applied to surgical operating lamp due to the improvement of power efficiency of the LED. Comparing with LED, the traditional surgical operating lamp using halogen light source has disadvantages such as bid size and low efficiency. Especially, portion of halogen lamp spectrum belong to infrared rays and it generate a lot of heat which worsens the patients’ condition. Although the efficiency of LED is high, the brightness of the single LED is still not enough to be used in surgical light, therefore, it’s necessary to utilize plenty of LEDs and each LED needs an optical component to guide rays of light to satisfy the illumination specifications of surgical light. We use Tailored Freeform Method to compute the path of rays to generate the profile of a optical device to obtain a single LED optical module with high light intensity, high light uniformity and narrow light angle. Several single LED are arranged in concentric circle to allocate light to make total brightness satisfy the requirement of the surgical light. As a result, we can obtain a surgical operating lamp using less LED than current surgical lamps but achieving the specifications of surgical operating lamp’s requirements, the standard requirements include maximum central illumination, light distribution, shadow dilution and so on.

This work presents the modal analysis for multiple degree-of-freedom system in operating conditions and develops the method to obtain mode shapes from the measured operational deflection shape (ODS). First work is to design and make a MDOF system. Use the impact testing method and shaker excitation method to obtain modal parameters for MDOF system. This work chose time domain method, frequency domain method and transmissibility method to measure ODS. The prediction formula theory feasibility analysis presented is precisely. Several experimental examples include resonant and anti-resonant excitation are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the predictive algorithm and shown successful in determining all of the mode shape vectors. The anti-resonant excitation predicts mode shape accuracy than resonant excitation states, because the measured ODS its modal characteristic uniformly when anti-resonant excitation state. The predictive model can also be extended to rotary system in operating conditions and break through the traditional experimental modal analysis’s limit. The study can to expand to multiple harmonic excitations and force prediction problem.

The information industry in Taiwan started from IBM to Taiwan with host hosting, and with the continuous expansion of information applications and the increasing level of informationization, the computer system integration service industry came into being. Due to the wide range of computer system integration services, the environment of individual customer industries is also different. The bidding, project management capabilities, professional service technology and cooperation will be the threshold for industrial competition. According to CCR model, BCC model and Malmquist Productivity Index, we compare efficiency for each laptop manufactories in order to figure out the top score and lowest one. Looking at the data of this study, it could be found in the CCR and BCC models that there are two manufacturers with a total technical efficiency value of 1, SYSAGE (2013~2018) and LEOSYS (2014~2018). Compared with the other seven manufacturers, the value of pure technical efficiency or scale efficiency is relatively efficient. It is a relatively efficient manufacturer. In contrast, the overall technical efficiency of DDSC (DIMERO DATA SYSTEM CORPORATION) is the lowest (2013~2015 and 2017~2018). It would be a relatively inefficient manufacturer. Since the CCR and BCC models would not be able to handle cross-year data analysis and comparison, the Malmquist Productivity Index would be used to compare cross-year data analysis in this study. In the Malmquist Productivity Index from 2010 to 2018, it could be found that the the highest Malmquist Productivity Index would be the LEOSYS with 1.133. The judgment is caused by the higher technical efficiency change (Tech-ch). The lowest manufacturer of the Malmquist Productivity Index is HAUMAN with 0.872, and the second lowest would be the DDSC with 0.873. The factors that influence the Malmquist Productivity Index are caused by the lowest value of efficiency change (Eff-ch). Therefore, LEOSYS would be the most efficient manufacturer, and DDSC would be the most inefficient manufacturer.

The development of biotechnology creating the biotechnology industry, is widely applied in the fields that include medicine, agriculture, engineering, and environment protection, recent years becoming important economic forces for global countries. This study takes 37 companies listed on the Taiwan biotech industry (cabinet) as the research object to discuss the operational efficiency of Taiwan biotechnology industry from 2013 to 2017, and uses the dynamic data envelopment method to rank the number of employees and fixed assets as inputs. The operating income, pre-tax net profit is the output item, and the earnings per share is used as the variable for the inter-annual period. The empirical results show that the companies with better overall operating efficiency from 2013 to 2017 are DMU13, DMU20 and DMU35 Dabrito, and the worst overall efficiency values are DMU6, DMU12, DMU24, which indicates that the input and output resources are still allocated. There is room for improvement, and it is necessary to review its corporate management policy and business strategy as a whole. Decision-making units that fail to achieve efficiency should review the allocation of input and output resources, seek to improve market competitiveness, expand market share and enhance their competitive position in the industry, and strive to improve overall business performance as a driving force for the growth and development of the domestic economy.

This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess the possible impacts of domestic credit cooperatives after becoming a member of the WTO. It becomes an important challenge for every credit cooperatives to effectively use and arrange the resources under the tremendous competition pressure. Sixteen credit cooperatives were selected as the objects in this study. In addition to use the DEA Method to analyze their operation performances, the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) was also adopted to investigate their operation efficiencies and productivities from 2008 to 2012. The results show that the domestic credit cooperatives are generally inefficient technically because of the lack of scale efficiency. Therefore, to improve the operation performance, it is necessary to enlarge the scale to achieve the steady scale rewards. Also, according to Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) with five indexes of variation, the variations of technology efficiency, technology, scale efficiency and total factor productivity are positively increased. It shows that the credit cooperatives actively improvethe technology efficiency to achieve the scale efficiency, but result in the decrease of the variation of pure technology efficiency.

An increasing number of electronic devices employ touchscreens as the operat-ing method. Among these devices, smartphones have exhibited the most rapid development. To achieve more impressive visual effects, the size of smartphone displays has gradually increased. However, the resulting disadvantage is that these devices cannot be operated using one hand. In situations where users must operate the phone with one hand, some screen areas cannot be reached by their thumb. Thus, the demand for one-handed operation remains. This demand is re-lated to operating convenience, which is obviously not provided by existing products. This study analyzes touchscreen cell phones with varying screen sizes, from 2.55 to 5.3 in, currently available on the market to examine the efficiency of one-handed operation, and the screen into nine regional planning and conduct experimental operation, while inter-regional implementation plan for each operation moves back and forth, finally won 72 Operation Move order and divided into four groups for this experiment planning, then the use of custom software program records the sequence of operations, the time, the cumulative error and the wrong location, to understand one-handed operation of the phone with the screen size effect relationship. Analysis of experimental data found that the average cumulative one-hand operation error, in the 4-inch smartphone has the lowest cumulative number of errors, and larger than 4 inches will make the operation time increases; The experimental data is converted to right-handed operation data, in different regions of the position towards the center of the screen, or when starting from the middle of the screen towards the different regions of the position, the shortest time required for operation, but the highest error rate; When moved to Left corner, bottom left and bottom right and other locations, or moved from the position of the rest of the position, requires more operating time, the error rate is higher.
