Abstract:
The OpenWorm project has the ambitious goal of producing a highly detailed in silico model of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . A crucial part of this work will be a model of the nervous system encompassing all known cell types and connections. The appropriate level of biophysical detail required in the neuronal model to reproduce observed high-level behaviours in the worm has yet to be determined. For this reason, we have developed a framework, c302, that allows different instances of neuronal networks to be generated incorporating varying levels of anatomical and physiological detail, which can be investigated and refined independently or linked to other tools developed in the OpenWorm modelling toolchain. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Connectome to behaviour: modelling C. elegans at cellular resolution’.

Abstract:
The adoption of powerful software tools and computational methods from the software industry by the scientific research community has resulted in a renewed interest in integrative, large-scale biological simulations. These typically involve the development of computational platforms to combine diverse, process-specific models into a coherent whole. The OpenWorm Foundation is an independent research organization working towards an integrative simulation of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans , with the aim of providing a powerful new tool to understand how the organism's behaviour arises from its fundamental biology. In this perspective, we give an overview of the history and philosophy of OpenWorm, descriptions of the constituent sub-projects and corresponding open-science management practices, and discuss current achievements of the project and future directions. Abstract:
The growth of the software industry has gone hand in hand with the development of tools and cultural practices for ensuring the reliability of complex pieces of software. These tools and practices are now acknowledged to be essential to the management of modern software. As computational models and methods have become increasingly common in the biological sciences, it is important to examine how these practices can accelerate biological software development and improve research quality. In this article, we give a focused case study of our experience with the practices of unit testing and test-driven development in OpenWorm, an open-science project aimed at modeling Caenorhabditis elegans. We identify and discuss the challenges of incorporating test-driven development into a heterogeneous, data-driven project, as well as the role of model validation tests, a category of tests unique to software which expresses scientific models.

Abstract:
This study sets out to test assumptions about openwork flying buttresses of the type used in Gothic buildings from the mid-thirteenth century. The employment of such units has been associated with the "decadence" of Gothic architecture. Arguing that the deployment of the first such flyers responded to special circumstances at each of the buildings in question, the authors proceed to test the structural performance of the newfangled flyers of the Amiens choir and to correlate the findings with an archaeological investigation of the edifice itself. The openwork flyer is thus placed within a broadly conceived framework of theory and practice.

The article analyzes the three-year, three-factor experience of the impact of the system of forest strips and mineral fertilizers on the yield of spring wheat soft Favorit in the Volga steppe is studied. The theoretical aspect of solving the problem of increasing the yield of spring wheat using analytical and empirical methods, on the basis of which the multiple regression is built, was studied. During the research period, the increase in the yield of spring wheat under the influence of optimal designs of forest strips and fertilizers increased by 3.0%. In wet years, it is necessary to increase the dose of mineral fertilizers in the form of fertilizing during the growing season of spring wheat. The influence of openwork and distance from the forest shelterbelts, time of day on the illumination of spring wheat crops was studied. The regression analysis used the relative illumination as the ratio of illumination under the influence of field-protective forest strips to the illumination of the open field of spring wheat. The analysis of regression-correlation revealed that the greatest impact on the yield of spring wheat, have a dose of fertilizers and openwork, then the dose of fertilizers and the distance from the forest strip and the least – openwork and the distance from the forest strip.

Abstract:
Domotics is a field of automation in fast growing expansion, and nowadays it’s usual to notice it incorporated in new habitacional constructions that aim for unprecedented levels of comfort, security and technology. Despite that, one of the issues with this new technological trend, as with most of them, is related with its high cost. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation, is to implement a low cost system of this type, due to the usage of sensors and LinuxMCE, a support open source software dedicated to this area. As a first approach, one has studied the platform, his methods of installation and how to compile and integrate the new sensors. Afterwards, it was created a bridge in C/C++ based on TCP/IP sockets to accommodate the communication between them and the system and a showcase of the overall work. Regarding final results, one has accomplished to properly install and configure the distribution, establish the connection among the various sensors and LinuxMCE and having this last one working (regarding temporal restrains). There are however some limitations, because this system already implemented a scheme of messaging exchange from and to the external devices, that was not possible to adapt to the sensors.

Abstract:
Investigating openwork block accumulation has the potential to further our understanding of rock weathering, the control of geological structure on landforms, the production of substrates for biological colonisation and the impacts of climate change on landform development and dynamics. Various models for the development of these landforms have been proposed. This includes in situ weathering, frost heave and wedging. Furthermore, it has been suggested that cold-based ice has the potential to preserve these features rather than to obliterate them. Blocky deposits are also frequently used as proxy evidence for interpreting palaeoclimates. The morphology and processes acting on a blockfield located on the Northern Buttress of the Vesleskarvet Nunataks, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica (2°W, 71°S) were investigated and characterised. Given block dimensions and orientations that closely resembled the parent material and only small differences in aspect related characteristics observed, the blockfield was found to be autochthonous with in situ block production and of a young (Holocene) age. Small differences in rock hardness measurements suggest some form of aspect control on rock weathering. South-facing sides of clasts were found to be the least weathered. In comparison, consistently low rock hardness rebound values for the north-facing aspects suggest that these are the most weathered sides. Additional indicators of weathering, such as flaking and pitting, support analyses conducted for rock hardness rebound values. Solar radiation received, slope gradients and snow cover were found to influence weathering of clasts across the study site. Furthermore, ambient temperatures and wind speed significantly influenced near-surface ground temperatures dynamics. However, the lack of a matrix and paucity of fine material in textural analyses suggest a limited weathering environment. It is suggested that the retreat of the Antarctic ice sheet during the last LGM led to unloading of the surface, causing dilatation and subsequent fracturing of the bedrock along pre-existing joints, leading to in situ clast supply. Subsequent weathering and erosion along other points or lines of weakness then yielded fines and slight edge rounding of clasts.

Abstract: The present work proposes the development of a noise measurement device, using components and electronic devices of low cost for use in the monitoring of noise in work environments. In the implementation of the measuring system were studied two proposals of devices one based on the platform Arduino and another based on the OpenWrt system together with a router. The noise pickup circuits were developed based on existing signal pickup circuits, identifying what best suited the proposal. The measurement system also contemplates the proposal of remote operation, by telemetry, so that the operator can control the measurements without being in place. For this, a wireless module was used in the Arduino and the router itself in the OpenWrt system. The proposed devices can be used both for noise monitoring and recording of noise levels continuously or at predefined time intervals, thus enabling the achievement of environmental history. For performance evaluation of the devices a commercial noise measurement system was used and the specifications and requirements of technical standards. The results showed that the system implemented based on the OpenWrt system presented a better performance, mainly in relation to its sampling rate that is higher, requiring no adjustments and the search for solutions to increase the sampling rate verified in the Arduino.

Abstract:
External noise of motorcycles is composed of engine noise, tire noise, muffler noise, etc. The biggest noise source among them is muffler noise, and improvement of muffler noise reduction technology is urgently needed. At present, muffler noise is measured using a microphone when driving an actual vehicle on a test course or chassis dynamometer. Therefore, the design of the muffler requires a lot of man-hours and cost. In addition, the effect of the reduction measures on each noise source cannot be clearly understood, because the noise from the whole vehicle is measured in this test using an actual vehicle. In order to efficiently evaluate the effects of noise reduction measures, it is effective to use simulation technology. However, at present, it is limited to determine the optimal design for each part of a vehicle. From this background, it is necessary to improve exhaust noise prediction technology using numerical analysis. However, exhaust noise prediction using 3D simulation is not realistic because of expensive software and high computational load, although it is useful for the detailed investigation of noise source from small areas. On the other hand, 1D simulation software on the market is inexpensive, but it is also not useful for muffler manufacturing companies, because models that deal with complex phenomena such as internal combustion engines are charged and calculations cannot be made easily by complex model structure. Therefore, in this study, sound pressure level from a single-cylinder small motorcycle before and after the muffler was predicted from exhaust pressure calculated by 1D simulation of engine exhaust flow using OpenWAM, an open source gas dynamics code for internal combustion engines. In addition, the validity of these calculations was investigated by comparing the results of these calculations with the test results of an actual vehicle measured using the accelerated noise test method in accordance with the UN Regulation No. 41. These results showed that the 1D simulation using OpenWAM could reproduce the test results of a real vehicle and it was confirmed that this method could predict exhaust noise easily at low cost.
