Abstract:
The initial concept of my project started from my experience in China. The domestic increase of productivity, heavier workloads and longer working hours have provoked an urgent desire for an increased quality of leisure, which has triggered an enormous basic demand for comfortable houses with gardens in Chinese societies. But most Chinese people do not have a backyard or a garden to themselves due to the high population density. Public open space has to compensate for this demand. Meanwhile, with the quickening tempo of modern life and prolonged working hours, most people have to enjoy their entertainment and social activities after daytime. Therefore, these public open spaces are even more highly used than during the day, people use them as their backyard and for social gatherings. How these open spaces operate at night has had an enormous impact on nightlife and its importance has been gradually recognized. The Chinese government is spending large amounts of money constructing and upgrading the lighting in open space. But most of these projects do not address key issues associated with lighting. For example, what the government considers 'good lighting' many people consider to be over-lighting or functional lighting and even some lighting projects leave many functions of the space unlit, For instance, pathways or sidewalks are not lit but the plazas and squares are. Those types of issues occur in many open spaces due to a traditional approach to the lighting design process which tends to occur separately to the design process. Obviously most lighting projects do not really consider the relation of light, space and people's use. When I came to Melbourne I found out that the City of Melbourne has a specific lighting strategy, which is more about electricity saving and technical requirements rather than spatiality. In addition, many lighting companies deal with lighting effect on surrounding landscape and architecture but are also not about spatiality. So in order to understand the spatial qualities of lighting, my original research questions were: 1. Instead of traditional building materials how lighting can be used to transform space and spatial quality in open space? 2. How does lighting spatially bridge between site and street, site and building, site and context, eventually site and city? 3. I also wanted to consider the site's identity at various scales.

The way we perceive the urban environment affects the choices we make and therefore our behavior. This fact has an important effect when we navigate a city. How urban spaces are laid out will influence our decisions and have repercussions in our travel choices. There is therefore a connection between urban spatial experience and transportation systems. With a large number of cities considering transit oriented development (TOD) - an urban model whose goal is to align urban development to public transportation patterns by creating walkable, mixed and diverse neighborhoods - as the primary planning solution to solve their accessibility problems, the connection between the urban image and the transit system is crucial. If planners want to bring people closer to transit systems and increase ridership, they will need to improve the perception people have about the system and further construct a modified set of travel preferences. Both urban space and the process of navigation are, in general, composed linear features related to movement (paths) and point features that define origins and destinations (nodes). Within the different types of nodal elements, open spaces have a particular condition; their openness allow people to perceive a larger portion of their surroundings, easing the process of wayfinding and enhancing the sense of place, which is highly valuable for the construction of true communities. This thesis explores the role of open spaces, not only as attractive urban amenities and recreational spaces, but as organizing elements of the territory and anchors for the transit system arrival points. I explore Guadalajara, Mexico, a city with an important central network of open spaces. The city is currently making a significant investment in transit and is looking towards TOD for its planning solutions. I intend to use Guadalajara as a mean to show how open public spaces can be used as primary elements to structure transit systems and to enhance the creation of place around stations.

Brightwell, Kim M. "Urban alleyways: a potential open space asset." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/74520.

Full text
Abstract:
This study set out with the premise that many urban alleys have the potential to become city open space assets. The project was designed to develop a process by which alley characteristics may be evaluated for their effect on alley open space potential. The alleys of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia were the inspiration for this study. Old Town is an 18th century city which was established as a settlement on the Potomac River in 1749. For nearly 100 years it flourished as a seaport town. As the town grew, property owners created alleys through the blocks providing rear access to their homes and businesses. The alleys bustled with activity, and became a circulation subsystem to the street and sidewalk circulation. This paper follows the process used to discover alley open space potential in Old Town. However, it is not the findings for Old Town that are most important. It is the process which is the true result of this study. This process can be used as a model by any city or town where there is a desire to better use alley spaces. The four tasks which were found to be important in discovering this open space potential are outlined below. Task One: Evolution of Alley Spaces The purpose of this task is to understand the part the alleys play in the city's circulation system. To know the history of their development and the way they have been used in the past is to learn what makes them important and distinct from other circulation systems in the city. Task Two: Evaluate the Alley Paths The elements that create the"floor, ceiling, and walls" of the alley paths are defined and evaluated for their potentially positive or negative impact on the alley as it is refurbished for pedestrian open space use. Task Three: Alley Potential Use Task three looks at the way different land uses use their alleys. Knowing present alley use allows the development of an alley typology from which decisions concerning potential use can be made. Task Four: Design Proposals Finally, the first three tasks are brought together in the form of design proposals. The proposals become a pallet with which to refurbish the alleys in a way that is sensitive to their history, their character, and their particular open space potential. The project teaches that all urban alleyways are not the same. Each has its own story, and its own particular combination of characteristics. In knowing the alleys as individual, their design as viable open spaces becomes more imaginative.

Abstract:
The current study is an empirical study of preference for campus open space around the drill field on Mississippi State University (MSU) campus. 83 students at Mississippi State University were selected as research objects. Based on the literature review, a research process was designed to employ VEP, content analysis and multivariate analysis---Biplot to explore the interested research problems. The study identified two most preferred landscape scene types - "Legibility" and "Coherence" using Kaplan?s "information processing model". A statistical analysis tool for multivariate analysis-Biplot was used to reveal the landscape preference patterns for campus open space as well as how certain landscape features can contribute these patterns. The study found factors such as gender, educational and cultural background can heavily affect these patterns. The result indicated that "vegetations" including tree, seasonal flowers and open grassland, were the most preferred landscape feature on campus open space. Finally, the limitations of this study were discussed and some recommendations for future landscape preference study were provided.

Abstract:
One of the top priorities in American cities has been the improvement of business conditions in downtown shopping areas. Downtown Indianapolis, as other American cities is involved in economic revitalization in order to be able to compete with rapid suburban expansion. This revitalization effort seeks to attract more people to the city core.Downtown economic development is integrally related to the urban space revitalization. Since the beginning of cities, open spaces have been regarded as an important public amenity for providing quality urban environments. Open space provides the life of community and a place for human activity. As an entertainment center, Indianapolis can not just develop new sophisticated buildings, it needs also to comprehensively revitalize the open spaces. This project is an effort to demonstrate how urban environments located in the core area that have easy access, security, and comfort and also are joyful and attractive place for its citizen and guests. In this creative project, the designer/planner proposes an open space improvementconcept and program that can be implemented in the south-western section of downtown Indianapolis. The concepts derived m analyzing the potentials and assets that exist in the area today and responding to known future developments. The major goals of thesis project are:1 . Strengthening the pedestrian loop through out the project area in order to create a continuity of pedestrian spaces.2. Creating a pedestrian mall along five blocks of Illinois Street as a major effortto provide a pedestrian oriented environment.3. Creating a pedestrian corridor to connect the Circle Center Mall complex withthe Hoosier Dome and Convention Center. All planning and design concepts that are recommended in this project will reinforce the assets that already exist. The recommendations proposed within are meant to serve as "idea pieces" to aid in the planning and design of revitalization of downtown Indianapolis.

The thesis of the work is that statistical analysis can reliably measure individual preferences for different aspects of the built environment. These measurements can be used to understand and critique the effectiveness of existing neighborhoods in meeting the needs of residents, and to develop proposals for new neighborhoods. The research uses hedonic regression analysis to quantify the market value of specific attributes of housing quality, location and neighborhood at sites near Dallas, Texas. Measurements of location value in the form of travel-based rent gradients, proximity measures, and path characteristics are derived from these analyses. The research allows designs to be produced and critiqued with a better understanding of both homeowner preferences and market feasibility. It links the design process to a market-based feedback mechanism, and allows designers to make decisions that are more responsive to a project's social and economic site.

Abstract:
This research investigates the uses and perceptions of the population of the East Carrollton Area in New Orleans so as to evaluate the possible outcomes of urban design intervention and policy changes. Using GIS, field notes, structured interviews and a population survey, this research evaluates how much the built environment influences the uses of the neighborhood open space. Subsequently, it evaluates how the neighborhood open space is perceived as a place as opposed to a transportation infrastructure. Overall, the built environment affects the experience of the residents when they perform leisure activities in the neighborhood open space. Major deterrents to functional use and active transportation are related to social factors and the social environment. The neighborhood open space is largely perceived as an asset by the residents. It can be a valid replacement for urban parks when the population cannot access them.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 23-24.
The beach is a unique open space in the urban context. It is a dynamic aggressive environment that has in the past been ignored as an open space that has special qualities. While it has been seen purely as a recreational facility, ecosystem services and intrinsic values have been ignored. In Cape Town planning guidelines now set store on the value of open space, however the fear is that there may be insufficient emphasis on the beach as an urban edge and an open space element. While ecosystem service can and have been calculated intrinsic values present some difficulties.

RUSSO, TOMMASO. "ON SOME OPEN PROBLEMS IN BANACH SPACE THEORY." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/609289.

Full text
Abstract:
The main line of investigation of the present work is the study of some aspects in the analysis of the structure of the unit ball of (infinite-dimensional) Banach spaces. In particular, we analyse some questions concerning the existence of suitable renormings that allow the new unit ball to possess a specific geometric property. The main part of the thesis is, however, dedicated to results of isometric nature, in which the original norm is the one under consideration. One of the main sources for the selection of the topics of investigation has been the recent monograph [GMZ16], entirely dedicated to collecting several open problems in Banach space theory and formulating new lines of investigation. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the authors for their effort, that offered such useful text to the mathematical community. The results to be discussed in our work actually succeed in solving a few of the problems presented in the monograph and are based on the papers [HáRu17, HKR18, HáRu19, HKR••]. Let us say now a few words on how the material is organised. The thesis is divided in four chapters (some whose contents are outlined below) which are essentially independent and can be read in whatsoever order. The unique chapter which is not completely independent from the others is Chapter 4, where we use some results from Chapter 2 and which is, in a sense, the non-separable prosecution of Chapter 3. However, cross-references are few (never implicit) and usually restricted to quoting some result; it should therefore be no problem to start reading from Chapter 4. The single chapters all share the same arrangement. A first section is dedicated to an introduction to the subject of the chapter; occasionally, we also present the proof of known results, in most cases as an illustration of an important technique in the area. In these introductions we strove to be as self-contained as possible in order to help the novel reader to enter the field; consequently, experts in the area may find them somewhat redundant and prefer to skip most parts of them. The first section of each chapter concludes with the statement of our most significant results and a comparison with the literature. The proofs of these results, together with additional results or generalisations, are presented in the remaining sections of the chapter. These sections usually follow closely the corresponding articles (carefully referenced) where the results were presented.

The project evolves out of an interest in understanding how we can relate to space – personal, psychological, architectural, environmental. And how this relationship might be based on definition and delineation of these spaces. If space were somehow destabilised then it would follow that we would have to alter our understanding of it and thus our relationship to it would also change. The works produced for this project aimed at creating a disruption in space through the use of mild visual illusions. This paper traces the journey of the research project, focusing on a series of key works executed during the candidacy that marked important achievements or shifts in my practice. The paper charts the practical and conceptual development of the work locating it within the practice and theory of art, film and architecture.

Abstract:
Femtocell technology and TV White Space are two dierent entities that have not been thoroughly researched under the common goal of indoor mobile broadband access. In this thesis the combination of these two technologies is examined through the prism of four dierent actors: Mobile Network Operator, Facility Owner, Wi-Fi operator and TV White Space Only operator. The aim is to discover access benets and evaluate the business feasibility of open access femtocell networks using TV White Space for each individual actor. The work done, diers from related papers which focus on interference analysis, technical design and MNO deployment schemes as by using the business feasibility analysis both technological and economic aspects are taken into account for new market players as well. It is shown with no doubt that national roaming agreements is one of the most important aspects any market player should take into account before proceeding with any business plan. Additionally, the analysis found that the secondary usage of TV white space is technologically and economically feasible but no solid benets were identied that can overthrow existing indoor mobile broadband implementations like the Wi-Fi systems. However the primary usage of femto-TVWS is still recommended for some actors like the mobile network operator and the facility owner and the complimentary usage by the Wi-Fi operator.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is focused on one component of the urban environment: open space, specifically open space in the downtown core. Taking the position that supplying adequate and appropriate open space is an important civic responsibility, the thesis investigates the proposition that such open space can be created through the combined effect of urban open space objectives and urban regulations. The proposition is investigated in three parts. First, the influence of urban regulations on urban open space development is examined. The regulatory histories of New York's, San Francisco's and Vancouver's downtown cores are reviewed to identify regulations that have influenced open space. Most attention is given to Vancouver's regulatory history and urban development patterns. In general, the investigation revealed that, while San Francisco defined what constitutes adequate and appropriate urban open space, New York and Vancouver did not. Because of this lack of definition the regulations continued to be developed in response to immediate situations rather than in response to open space objectives. The second part uses the historic shifts in the understanding of open space to identify four fundamental objectives for the development of adequate and appropriate urban open space. The objectives are: open space for public use; open space to shape the urban environment; open space to improve environmental quality; and open space as a network. The third part compares the regulations, identified as influencing open space, with the proposed objectives. This comparision determines how effectively the regulations achieve the objectives. Finally, a decision-making process is outlined that would enable the narrow and effective actions of the regulations achieve the broad objectives identified for urban open space. The thesis concludes that through the combined effect of urban open space objectives and urban regulations, cities can define adequate and appropriate open space and influence development to create such spaces.

Abstract:
With the rapid growth of American metropolitan areas, it is essential to plan for the preservation of open space before development occurs on lands which would better be left undeveloped. Although there is a long tradition of parks and open space planning in American cities, planning efforts over the past twenty-five years (since 1960) have not been systematically reviewed and there remains no set standard to guide the planning of regional-scale open space. Two foundations of open space planning are examined: its roles in guiding urban form, and in preserving natural processes in the city. Six case studies of contemporary open space plans and systems elicit the fundamental criteria and decision processes for open space planning.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to find how to activate a public open space as a transportation hub in an urban environment with limited open spaces, and to propose alternative designs for an urban plaza. The public transportation system was used to analyze the city’s condition and to find potential areas for a transportation hub to be developed in an urban space. Using the analyses and findings of the existing public transportation, City Hall Plaza was chosen as the proposed site for its potential and the opportunities it offered. Space uses and their relationship to their surroundings were carefully analyzed in order to design an urban plaza that would provide recreational opportunities and a good quality of life for the city’s residents. Underground spaces were examined for use in the proposed plaza. The findings demonstrate the potential for a transportation station area to be activated as an urban public space. The proposal for designing an urban plaza improves its space and function and provides new experiences by introducing the use of underground spaces. The proposed plaza may become a prototype for urban plazas within the city area.

We conduct two physics studies on the space of jets using the CMS 2011 Open Data, experimental data of 7 TeV proton-proton collisions from the 2011 Run at the Large Hadron Collider released by the CMS collaboration for public use. Our first study uses the Energy Mover's Distance (EMD), a metric that quantifies the similarity in radiation pattern between two jets. This metric allows us to perform novel visualizations of the data including embedding the data into low-dimensional spaces and providing us a new method for quantifying detector effects. Our second study applies the jet topics method to find separate quark and gluon observable distributions. This method is closely related to topic modeling, a statistical model in natural language processing to find topics in a collection of documents. Lastly, we release a sample of over 800,000 high-quality jets from the 2011 run as well as the accompanying jets from the CMS-provided Monte Carlo samples. The aim of this release is to allow future physics studies to bypass the time-consuming steps of processing and validating the CMS Open Data.

Abstract:
Open clusters are essential laboratories for understanding stellar evolution, as they allow constraints to be placed on stellar ages and luminosities. As distance indicators they are also important tracers of star formation in the Milky Way. One such cluster is Trumpler 27 that we identified for detailed study. The aim of the study is to estimate the distance, radial velocity, age, membership and reddening of the cluster using both spectroscopic and photometric techniques. We used new spectroscopic data collected from SAAO's 1.9m telescope together with existing photometric data from catalogues in the study of Trumpler 27. The spectra collected were classified using spectral atlases to determine the reddening in the field. Stars of the cluster were identified using selection techniques that made use of both infrared and optical Q parameters, spatial distribution and photometric techniques. The result from this work suggest that Trumpler 27 is made up of ~ 55 stars which are at different stages of evolution. The stars include main sequence stars, blue supergiants, two cool supergiants and maybe two WR stars.

Enayati, Bahram. "Connecting urban planning, management and open space in seismic zone." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1821.

Abstract:
Tehran, the capital of Iran, is located in an area of high seismic risk and seismologists believe that a strong earthquake will affect Tehran in the near future. With a population of nearly eight and a half million, it is estimated that probably a large number of people would lose their lives. Given this unfortunate possibility, and that the majority of buildings are built directly next to one another, any lateral force on one building could have a destructive impact on the others, on the network of connections and on the neighbourhood as a whole. A lack of open spaces in many residential and commercial areas will make immediate post-event organised responses, coordination, decision-making and resourcing difficult and challenging. These spaces may be considered for allocation of tasks such as providing emergency shelter, water and medical supplies, public health and sanitation, and housing replacement. Therefore, the question is whether Tehran is ready for the challenges, disaster mitigation and preparedness, response and recovery. This research is focused on the interaction between physical systems and social systems to lessen societal exposure to the risks of earthquakes. In doing so, first the approaches to integrated disaster and urban planning from other contexts were studied. After the selection of an assessment tool, the spatial, physical and social vulnerability of Tehran and the case study area were studied followed by the analysis of their risks and capacity. A detailed field study within the Khazaneh neighbourhood included estimating earthquake damage and casualties based on probable damage ratio and population distribution, and studying and developing criteria for identification and location of safety evacuation routes, shelter and other emergency utilities (hospitals, fire stations, etc.) in urban areas. It was concluded that earthquake protection systems are now a critical issue for the enhancement of seismic reliability of this urban region. Preparing disaster reduction strategies in Tehran require comprehensive disaster measures to be implemented in urban development plans, open space designs, urban management and the building industry to enhance disaster prevention capabilities and to minimise and control disasters throughout the Greater Tehran Area.

In the light of changes to the composition of society and the emergence of new technologies, conventional understandings of public space and inherited spatial forms no longer apply. Yet, for all the pessimism about whether these spaces will continue to exist, people still flock to places where they can be together. At the heart of this urge lies a crucial understanding of the modern city. Instead of being a closed community the modern city is cosmopolitan, a place for the gathering and living together of strangers. The city is the place where one goes to know people different from one self. Consequently, the city's reason for being is to socialize- for information, for business, for the development of the self. Like any place for socializing, it has its roots in pleasure. Located on the North End parcels of the central artery, my thesis project employs those programs that emerged right as this new understanding of the city dawned -- hotels, clubs, coffee shops, public promenades, restaurants, theaters, and pubs- to create spaces for socializing within the city. Social interaction is discursive, based on communicating, instead of being a visual relationship. The goal of the design is to create those moments where individuals can approach each other instead of being passive spectators to one another. Despite its lightheartedness, socializing and pleasure are serious because they set the terms on which different people can communicate and relate to one another, which ultimately is the basis for any democratic politics.

Harper, Sally Anne. "Urban open space : user perceptions of the Avis dam environment." Diss., University of Pretoria, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23461.

Full text
Abstract:
From its infancy, environmental psychology [which concerns itself with the coinfluencing interface between people and places] has required attention to actual context, and attention to social relevance. There has always been an emphasis on research into real problems within a context of meaningful theory, and on results which have potential not only for individuals, but also for policy-makers and those who execute that policy. This environmental psychology study is about the potential role of green open space in contributing towards quality of life in the city generally. It is also about a specific, wellloved urban open space in Namibia's capital city, Windhoek, the Avis dam environment, which is often the contentious target of proposed commercial development. At the moment, the Windhoek Municipality has no well-structured urban open space policy, and possibly also no full understanding of the meanings of the Avis dam for its users. This study hopes to make contributions to both these areas of policy-making. As the applicability of research findings to the development of public policies and community interventions depends very much on the suitability of the methodology and theories chosen (Stokols, 19911), this study begins with a discussion of systemic and ecosystemic thinking [Chapter Two]. They were chosen as the guiding metatheory for this study, not only because of their recognition of the inescapable connectedness between person and environment, but because of their personal appeal too. Chapter Three examines theories and models which are compatible with systems thinking, and which help understand the potentially positive psycho-social and socio-economic roles of urban open space generally, and how the extent of that potential in a specific open space may be appreciated and described. The implications of systemic/ecosystemic metatheory for the study's methodology and research design are discussed in Chapter Four, and the data collection methods, which comprised observation and interviewing, in Chapter Five. Ecosystemic thinkers do not believe that facts can be "found" [they are not there objectively, but co-emerge subjectively from people's individual and collective experience in a place], so Chapter Six deals with a co-emergent interpretation of the data gathered. Based on that interpretation, recommendations for urban open space policy generally, and the Avis dam environment specifically, are made in Chapter Seven. Conceptual strategies of environmental psychology. In D. Stokols& I. Schroeder, George Wittman. "Multiuse Corridor Master Planning: Integrating Infrastructure and Open Space Planning." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33465.

Full text
Abstract:
Infrastructure and open space planning can be brought together to create a system of multiuse corridors that accommodate multiple types of infrastructure, recreation trails and open space, while protecting natural resources. Some of the potential benefits of this system is more efficient use of fewer utility easements, a more comprehensive open space system that can be paid for by utility users, and less environmental damage from utility placement. A multiuse corridor planning process is described that is meant to be used by a multiple disciplinary team to plan for infrastructure and open space in the context of town, city or region. This process inventories all human infrastructure such as roads, waterlines, and electric and natural infrastructure, such as streams, rivers, forests, wetlands, and geologic features. An assessment is made on what areas are most likely to need infrastructure in the future and a conceptual plan is put together to best serve those needs. A conceptual open space plan is created to serve the needs of future development areas. The infrastructure and the open space plans are woven together using routing guidelines and typical multiuse corridor sections to best design these multiuse corridors. This thesis brings together infrastructure and open space planning at the city and regional level.
