The article demonstrates that critical social and ecological ramifications have been overshadowed by the open-cut coal mining industry’s importance to the economy of the Hunter region and of New South Wales.

Abstract:
The study discusses the impact of open cuts for the extraction of common minerals on soil resources and agricultural lands in Moscow region (MR). For this, the features of soil cover in Moscow region and the distribution of soil types by their use as agricultural resources were analyzed. Further, it was determined which types of soils are subject to varying degrees of open cut load. As a result, a schematic map of the soil cover with open cut load zones was made. It is shown which agricultural lands exposed to open cuts of varying intensity. A conclusion is made about the types of soil cover, which accounts for the greatest and least open cut load, as well as the degree of impact of open cuts on agricultural land resources and the correlation between the degree of open cut load and type of agricultural land use. It is shown that the most fertile soils, which occupy only 2.9% of the MR area, are not affected by the open cut load at all. The greatest open cut load is associated with agricultural lands, represented mainly by various sod-podzolic soils, which occupy 70.5% of the territory of the Moscow region. If economic trends and population growth rates in the Moscow region continue until 2030, we should expect a further increase in the influence of open cut load on agricultural land towards its intensification.

Abstract:
Surface mine is a mining system where all the mining activities are carried out on the planet surface or on open air environment. In the open mining system there are several methods, one of which is the open pit/cut. PT. Ifishdeco is one of the mining companies engaged in nickel ore mining and applies open mining system with open pit/cut method. PT. Ifishdeco Block X pit design is carried out with the help of Surpac 6.5.1 software. The design process starts with estimating reserves using the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method then using the company recommendation to design levels geometry with bench dimension of 5 m high, 6 m width, 45o slope, overall slope of ≤ 25 0, catch bench width of 1 m and mine road width 8 m with 8% slopes. Furthermore, proceed with designing a pushback or progress of the mine based on the elevation with 5 months mining operation plan.

Abstract:
A reliable coal seam sensing system is required to improve the productivity of selective mining in open-cut mining operations. A prototype system based upon commercial ground penetrating radar equipment, which measures coal thickness from the top of an exposed surface down to an underlying coal-interburden interface and generates digital subterranean models of the subsurface seam boundaries, was developed for this purpose. The models can be deployed to commercially available in-cab assistive guidance systems for bulldozers and other mining machinery in existing production processes, and can further contribute to the databases required for remote operation and control in a complete digital mine scenario. The system was evaluated at a production open cut coal mine in Queensland, Australia, with promising results. The benefits reported by operational personnel who evaluated the digital surface model in the mining environment provide strong motivation for ongoing technology development.

Abstract:
The open-off cut is used for equipment installation of working face before underground mining, and its sectional size is larger than that of the mining roadway. Therefore, the stability of open-off cut surrounding rock determines whether the panel can be put into operation. To solve the roof instability of open-off cut in the Wanli No.1 coal mine, the roof failure mechanism of open-off cut under weak composite rock strata with thin thickness was studied by field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. First, the characteristics of surrounding rock and the basic law of strata behaviors were obtained by detailed field monitoring. Afterward, FLAC3D numerical simulation and mechanical analysis were used to obtain the main mechanical control parameters of surrounding rock instability, and the existence of a soft interlayer above the roof is the main cause of roof instability. Based on this, the supporting parameters of the open-off cut were optimized and adjusted. The optimized parameters were applied to the adjacent 31207 open-off cut. The engineering practice showed that the optimized supporting parameters have an ideal control effect on roof stability.

Traditional optimization of open pit mine design is a crucial component of mining endeavors and is influenced by many variables. The critical factor in optimization is the geological uncertainty, which relates to the ore grade. To deal with uncertainties related to the block economic values of mining blocks and the general problem of mine design optimization, under unknown conditions, the best ultimate pit limits and pushback designs are produced by a minimum cut algorithm. The push–relabel minimal cut algorithm provides a framework for computationally efficient representation and processing of the economic values of mining blocks under multiple scenarios. A sequential Gaussian simulation-based smoothing spline technique was created. To produce pushbacks, an efficient parameterized minimum cut algorithm is suggested. An analysis of Indian iron ore mining was performed. The developed mine scheduling algorithm was compared with the conventional algorithm, and the results show that when uncertainty is considered, the cumulative metal production is higher and there is an additional increase of about 5% in net present value. The results of this work help the mining industry to plan mines in such a way that can generate maximum profit from the deposits.

<p>The nexus between environmental bio-remediation and environmental design, as it pertains to disused coal mining sites in Australia, is little investigated. Increasingly, many of these open cut extraction holes around south-eastern Australia, are becoming redundant as their resources are exhausted or non-economic viability creeps into the industry or are becoming management ‘nightmares’. The recently announced March 2017 cessation of the Yallourn Power Station and associated brown coal Open Cut, and the recent fires and insurance liability legal determinations of the Yallourn Open Cut are exemplar of the former and latter respectively.</p>This paper surveys the deeper bio-remediation and ecological transformative issues directly associated with the Anglesea brown coal Open Cut, and offers an ecological design lens insight as to possible treatments and scenarios that can be offered to guide the future use and management of the site. The lens demonstrates the richness that interdisciplinary design and applied research offers in assisting the healing and mediation of sites. The extraordinary nature and scope of the Anglesea coal mine site provides an opportunity to create a range of cultural attractions, natural succession treatments, natural bio-remediation strategies and educational opportunities. One scenario, for an Anglesea Lake Eco-Resort, proposes to incorporate an integrated Aboriginal cultural destination, performance centre, art installations and recreational venues, engaging the Anglesea community, visitors, researchers and students towards creating a vibrant and unique environment.

Kagarlinsk copper deposits have been worked out since IV millennium BC and till the end of II millennium BC in the steppes of the South Urals and a huge amount of copper have been recovered from their ores in the Bronze Age. Geophysical studies have been conducted in the south periphery of the Kagarlinsk ore field not far from Belousovka village at the mining-processing complex with the length of 900—1000 m and 30—70 m size across. Something like a hundred of small open-cut mines from 3 to 12 m in diameter are fixed in this area with near side mine dumps, sites for assortment of extracted ore adjoined at stove pits 3—5 m in diameter for burning up lump ores. Thorough topographic, gradient magnetic and geo-radar surveys have been fulfilled in areas where typical objects: open-cut mine, a pit for pilot burning up ores, slime sites and ore store are situated. As a result new data have been obtained on the structure of ancient outputs and associated technological facilities. Numerous magnetic anomalies revealed near the open-cut mine and a pit testify that copper ore encloses sufficient amount of iron and pilot assortment of the burned up ore took place near the pits. According to the results of geo-radar survey special features of pit-stove have been reconstructed and 3D model of the ancient open-cut mine built. A pit for burning up ore was cone-shaped with steps for comfort of loading and unloading ore. Its bottom diameter was 5m, the principal mine was 1—1.5 m in diameter and depth rough 3 m, the volume of the pit did not exceed 13—15 m3. Transversal size of a mine was 7—9 m and the depth was up to 4 m. The open-cut mine had steep sides from the north, east and south and in the west the relief was mildly sloping. The entrance to the open-cut mine was from the west. Initial depth of the open-cut mine differed from the present day surface by 2—3 m. According to our appraisal the amount of extracted ore in this mine was 25—30 tons. Taking into account the overall number of mines some 2—2.5 thousand tons of bulk ore were extracted during operation of Belousovka mining-metallurgical complex.

The first weighting control is one of the difficult problems that cannot be avoided in the safe and efficient production of longwall mining face. To optimize the existing pressure releasing technology of open-off cut, the open-off cut roof cutting pressure releasing (OCRCPR) technology is put forward on the basis of roof cutting pressure releasing gob-side entry retaining (RCPRGER) technology. Firstly, the mechanism of the technology and the design method of related key parameters are summarized. Then the pressure releasing effect of OCRCPR and the stress environment change under this technology are analyzed by mechanics calculation and numerical simulation, respectively, which verify the feasibility of the OCRCPR technology from the theoretical level. Finally, a test mining face is taken as an example to implement the field test. The field test results show that the OCRCPR can effectively shorten the first weighting step and weaken the first weighting strength and has a good pressure releasing effect.

In recent years, there has been a decline in the efficiency of coal mining by traditional methods. On the one hand, the volume of coal outside the contour of the cut, which is economically impractical for open-pit mining, is increasing. On the other hand, when using underground geotechnology, the cost of production exceeds the cost of performing mining operations using open geotechnology, this is due to differences in the factors of operation of the open pit and the mine. This circumstance determines the use of open-underground technology for mining coal reserves outside the contour of the open pit as an actual and promising direction. This article describes a methodological approach based on the use of technological schemes for the preparation and treatment of reserves of powerful shallow coal seams, the justification of the parameters of combined geotechnology with a coordinated and balanced development of open and open-underground mining operations with the distribution of reserves for open and open-underground mining of coal reserves beyond the limit contour of the open pit, the preparation of excavation sites directly from its workings and the coordination of production capacity and the speed of their development. Its application will increase the production capacity of the coal mining complex without additional environmental burden and will provide an increased return on investment.

The stability of the extra-large width open-off cut of a longwall panel has been a major concern in underground solid backfill mining. In this study, a numerical model was built with FLAC3D for analyzing the characteristics of the effective prestressed field distribution in the extra-large width open-off cut roof in Xingdong coal mine, China. The numerical results obtained in this study demonstrate that an anchorage rock beam bearing structure (ARBBS) can be formed. Additionally, the ARBBS model was also constructed. The analytical expression of the maximum shear stress (MSS) in the model was obtained under the functions of composite influencing factors. Then, the MSS evolution laws in ARBBS with different thicknesses and spans were investigated using MATLAB software. The stress changes in ARBBS with a span of 15 m were compared and analyzed under the functions of single and composite influencing factors. The cooperative control principle of the roof ARBBS and two rib anchorage bearing structures was also clarified. Accordingly, a combined support scheme for an 11.5 m-wide open-off cut was proposed. The field applications demonstrated that the scheme successfully controlled the failure and deformation of the surrounding rock, thus contributing to the fast development of the open-off cut and the quick and timely installations of the backfill mining equipment. This validated the results of the ARBBS model. This study is expected to provide helpful references for other extra-large width open-off cut or roadway stability investigations and rock support design under similar engineering and geological conditions.

With mining depth and state-wide expansion in open pit mining, it is necessary to bulid a three-dimensional visual model of open pit mining boundary, which can be used in the analysis of pit slope stability, engineering decisions, geological analysis and production planning. In this paper, a three-dimensionla visual model reflecting the complex formation load and terrain conditions was built by collecting original open pit design and geological data. With this model, stability analysis of open pit can be obtained and theoretical basis for selection of design can be provided. In the specific prcess of modelling, the original information in the existing CAD mining topographic maps were be used fully and the mine topographic maps was imported into Surpac mining software. Surface digital terrain model can be obtained elevation assignmented by corrction processing of CAD linears and vector processing of measring point data. On this basis, by using MIDAS software and considering the requirements of the scope of computational space, a three-dimensional model can be obtained through Boolean cut operations. With this model, the real surface shape of open pit mining boundary can be reflected.

The The paper addresses the issues of designing onboard systems and complex digitalization of open-pit mining equipment. A generalized schematic diagram and composition of the On-Board Robotic Control System for open-pit equipment (OBRCS OPE) are provided. The option of the On-Board Robotic Control System for mining dump trucks (OBRCS MDT) and schematics of the on-board robotic system of the BELAZ dump truck are described in more detail. A layout option is suggested for an autonomous ready dump truck, a modification that meets all the requirements for the digital transformation (DT) generation of dump trucks i.e. the ability to operate as part of the mine fleet management systems and robotic control systems, as well as the availability of modern on-board industrial safety systems and remote diagnostics. The DT Generation of mining equipment will allow mining companies to achieve the up-to-date level in digital transformation of surface mining operations and will cut the amount of investments required in upgrading the mining transport system.

Abstract:
Brown coal is young, shallowly deposited, and widely distributed in the world. It is a fuel commonly used to generate electricity. This paper first reviews the resources and characteristics of brown coal in Victoria, Australia, and its exploitation and contribution to the economy or power supply in Victoria. Due to the shallow depth of the brown coal seam, e.g. very favorable stripping ratio, open pit mining is the only mining method used to extract the coal at low cost for power generators. With the large-scale mining operations, cases of batter failure were not rare in the area. From the comprehensive review of past failures, overburden batter tends to fail by circular sliding, coal batter tends to fail by block sliding after the overburden is stripped due to a weak water-bearing layer underneath the coal seam and tension cracks developed at the rear of the batter, and batter failure is typically coincided with peak raining seasons. Secondly, the paper reviews the case study of Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) Open Cut Mine batter stability, including geology, hydrogeology, and hydro-mechanically coupled numerical modelling. The modelling employs three-dimensional finite element method to simulate the MBC northern batter where cracks were observed in November 2013. The comprehensive simulation covers an overburden batter, a brown coal batter, two rainfall models, and a buttressed batter. The simulated results agree well with observed data, and it is found that the rainfall at the intensity of 21mm substantially lowered the factor of safety of the coal batter.

Abstract:
Increasing depths of open-cast mining and the distances of rock material haulage by trucks contribute to the rise in total costs. Open-cut transport is the main source of environmental impact due to high levels of exhaust emissions as well as dusting of the motor road surface and the transported rock mass. These factors make optimization of the transport component a priority. The paper considers the specific features of mining operations in deep open-pits. It is demonstrated that in such conditions the transition to conveyor ore transportation with justification of conditions and parameters for designing of mining systems is an important scientific and practical task. Advantages and disadvantages of the truck and conveyor haulage are analyzed. Conditions that determine safe transition to the conveyor ore transportation are defined using the case of the Kostomuksha open-cast mine. It is proven that justifi-cation of conditions and parameters for the design of the mining systems in construction and operation of a complex conveyor ore transportation system will help to improve the efficiency of transition to the new technology, to ensure proper management of the mining operations during the transition peri-od and to introduce reliable smart technologies for long-term operation of complex mining transport systems in deep open-cast mines.

Purpose. Establish an effective direction of the mining front direction in the beams locations at the development of a placer mineral deposit. Research methodology. The analytical method of research was used at the development of a method for determining the time of mining a pit section with a crossed beam surface when applying schemes with longitudinal and transverse movement of the mining front. The graphical method was used to analyze the established dependences of the maximum allowable cutwidth into the rock mass on the length of the open pit when determining the effective scope of the scheme with the longitudinal direction of the mining front at the development of placer deposits. The results. Schemes for mining a pit section with a cross-beam surface have been developed, providing for the longitudinal and transverse direction of the mining front, which make it possible to determine the main parameters of the mining system elements and establish the term of pit life. Efficient parameters have been established for the use of the transverse and longitudinal directions of mining faces movement when a pitsection with rugged terrain, which makes it possible to reduce the labor intensity of the process by 150–220 machine-shifts of an excavator at the pit field length of 300 to 900 m. Scientific novelty. The influence of the open pit length on the maximum allowable cut width into the rock mass during the longitudinal movement of the mining front is determined. The results of the research allow to establish that with an increase in the open pit length from 300 to 900 m, the maximum allowable width of the cut into the rock mass during the longitudinal movement of the front increases from 140 to 740 m. Practical value. A method for determining the time of mining a pit section with a crossed beam surface when using schemes with longitudinal and transverse movement of the mining front has been developed. The use of the proposed method makes it possible to determine the effective direction of mining front movement, depending on the parameters of the development system pit elements.

One of the most important indicators characterizing the operating conditions of the fields is the water cut. It negatively affects the way of mining and the possibility of effective use of modern mining technologies. The high water cut of the cover and ore-hosting rocks often serves as the main reason for a decrease in their stability and the manifestation of negative processes (quicksand properties of rocks, caving), as a result of which the safety of miners deteriorates and high-performance mining methods become inapplicable, which generally leads to a decrease in the technical and economic indicators of the open pit. Thus, the study of the regularities of the formation of water inflows in the “Severny” open pit, based on the use of factual material and the development of a sound forecasting methodology are relevant. Purpose of the study. Analyze and assess the mininggeological and mining-technical conditions of the open pit “Severny” using mathematical models. Research methodology. The work uses a modeling method to predict water inflow and calculate the drainage of a quarry field in difficult mining conditions. Devices simulating natural mining conditions were used: a device for electrohydrodynamic analogies (EGDA). Research results: An analogy has been drawn between the phenomenon of laminar steady-state filtration of water in rocks and the passage of current in an electrically conductive medium in the form of electrically conductive paper, less often in liquid electrolytes. The EGDA device was used to determine the water inflows into the quarry, taking into account the factors that complicate the calculations of groundwater filtration (for example, taking into account the movement of the walls of the quarry, the operation of drainage devices, the infiltration of atmospheric precipitation, the movement of water in neighboring aquifers of different permeability), modeling of objects with a complex configuration boundary contours. Conclusion. The modeling method has been improved, which makes it possible to substantiate the use of a specific mining method under certain hydrogeological conditions and to select the optimal drainage scheme to increase the operational reliability of the open pit. The conducted research, observation, study of the existing dam showed the technical feasibility of further development of the deposit with minimization of financial costs. In order to ensure the safety of mining operations, it is envisaged to conduct constant and systemic mining and technical monitoring of mining operations and study the state of the water protection dam and pit walls.

The method used was material stockpiling method and disposal stability became the author's basis to recommend a disposal in pit which can accommodate safe product to be implemented in the field. Based on the calculation results using Minescape 5.7. Software in May, the obtained overburden volume was 587.36 BCM. From the analysis results related to the Minescape 5.7. Software calculation comparison between the progress and the joint of the cut was 428.62 and the fill was 20.48.

Model Lane biasa diterapkan dalam tambang terbuka, namun dalam penambangan bawah tanah sulit untuk diterapkan. Dalam peper ini akan dikaji penerapan Model Lane dalam penentuan optimum cut-off grade pada penambangan urat (vein) emas bawah tanah dengan metode cut-and-fill. One of the methods to achieve those condition is determining the total minable reserves based on the optimum cut-off grade. Optimum cut-off grade can be estimated using Lane Model. Lane Model will maximize the Net Present Value (NPV) by considering 3 variables, i.e; economic variables (commodity prices and costs), grade distribution of deposit, and maximum capacity of each stage of production (mining, milling, and refinery). Lane models are usually applied in open-pit mines, unfortunately it is difficult to apply for underground mining unless some there are some modifications. This paper will examine the application of the Lane Model in determining the optimum cut-off grade in underground gold mine using cut-and-fill method to extract vein type deposit. Relevance of the work is due to the need for further modernization of the economy of the Russian Federation, which involves solving both basic theoretical and applied problems of the domestic mining industry. This circumstance largely determines not only the state of the state’s production resources, but also its scientific and technical potential. The global trend in the development of mining operations in the world is mainly determined by open pit mining of raw material resources. Open pit mining is characterized by an increase in the volume of processed rock mass, improved production processes through the use of advanced technologies, which entails the use of high-capacity mining machines. The main problems of open-cut mining are the following: complex mining and geological and mining-technical conditions; depletion of the mineral resource base; and constantly changing environmental conditions. All this leads to an increase in the cost of mining and a decrease in the competitiveness of the products of mining companies. Objective of the work. To establish the need to modernize traditional technologies in open pit mining with the possibility of integrating the main ideas of Industry 4.0. Research methodology. When solving the set tasks a complex approach was used, including: scientific analysis and synthesis of previously published research, analytical studies, laboratory experiment and observations of the work of open-pit excavators in real operating conditions. The methods of mathematical statistics include system analysis and modeling with the use of information technologies form the methodological basis of the research. Results. This paper deals with the issues of modelling the cab of a quarry crawler excavator to meet the technical requirements for the excavator cab in protecting against tipping and rock impacts. Model setup and analysis of simulation results after loading are performed using Autodesk Inventor software. An optimal finite-element model of an excavator operator’s cabin has been developed to assess the effectiveness of its structural protection. Conclusions. Implementing the core ideas of Industry 4.0 is a complex scientific and technical challenge. Its solution is connected with significant economic costs, including modernization of mining equipment, infrastructure, as well as changes in the technology of open-cast mining. The implementation of complex automated control systems and practical application of the latest information and geoinformation technologies will unambiguously give high estimated figures and have high applied potential, and ultimately ensure safety of open pit mining, increase of efficiency and productivity, possibility of mining in regions with complex mining and geological and mining-technical conditions.

After academic analysis and numerical calculation, a new supporting mode is designed for the supporting of large span open-off cuts: unite high strength anchor bar, combined anchor rope, W steel strip, metal mesh and concrete to form a group anchor seal effect, therefore maintain the tunnel wall rock's stability and safety. Engineering test was conducted at the 8105 working face open-off cuts, the anchor rope's anchorage force changes in the range of 140 ~ 160kN, the maximum delaminating value of the roof in anchorage zone is about 7mm, and the maximum roof-to-floor convergence is 38mm. The result shows that the proposed "anchor bar - combined anchor rope - concrete" supporting model improved the overall bearing capacity of the supporting structure, controlled the tunnel wall rock's deformation effectively, and also achieved the desired effect of the supporting design, ensured the safety of the large section open-off cuts.

Data on the erodibility of overburden spoils resulting from open-cut coal mining are limited. These data are required to derive parameters for erosion prediction models which can be used in the design of re-formed landscapes after mining. In this study, laboratory rainfall simulation data were used to derive CREAMS (Chemicals, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems) interrill erodibility parameters K and nbov for Central Queensland coal mine overburden spoils. For the spoils studied, K values ranged from 0·0111 to 0·1398 Mg·ha·h/(ha·MJ·mm) and nbov values ranged from 0·0004 to 0·0081. Sediment yield was transport controlled. Results for 1 spoil, South Blackwater Terang, showed that total soil loss increased linearly with slope, and both K and nbov varied non-linearly with slope. If a constant set of K and nbov values is used in modelling, CREAMS over-predicts spoil loss for slopes greater than that for which the parameter values were determined, and under-predicts spoil loss for slopes less than that for which the parameter values were determined. The results show evidence of differences between mine spoils and agricultural soils, including modality of size distribution of surface sediment available for erosion, a higher percentage of dispersed clays in eroded sediment from mine spoils than from agricultural soils, and the observed amount of surface sealing and crust formation. These differences indicate that erosion{erodibility parameters for mine spoils should be measured and that agricultural soil parameters should not be a basis for estimates of mine spoil parameters.

The most crucial event in a mining project is the selection of an appropriate mining method (MMS). Consequently, determining the optimal choice is critical because it impacts most of the other key decisions. This study provides a concise overview of the development of multiple selection methods using a cascade-forward backpropagation neural network (CFBPNN). Numerous methods of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) are discussed and compared herein. The comparison includes several factors, such as applicability, subjectivity, qualitative and quantitative data, sensitivity, and validity. The application of artificial intelligence is presented and discussed using CFBPNN. The Chengchao iron mine was selected for this investigation to pick the optimum mining method. The results revealed that cut and fill stoping is the most appropriate mining method, followed by sublevel and shrinkage stoping methods. The least appropriate method is open-pit mining, followed by room and pillar and longwall mining methods.

Abstract:
Purpose. To identify development regularities related to a stress-strain state and stability of the open pit walls while mining the steeply inclined iron-ore body at various stages of mining considering deterministic and stochastic components of the rock mass structural heterogeneity. Methodology. Numerical 3D simulation of the rock stress-strain state; application of the strength reduction procedure to determine a safety factor, taking into account the rock mass heterogeneity based on a stochastic model. Findings. The distribution of maximum shear deformations and displacements within the rock mass, making up the pit wall, has been obtained. Potential slide surfaces and safety factors have been determined at various stages of the inclined ore body mining. The effect of the rock mass structure on the pit wall stability has been estimated. A comparison of calculations based on the 3D and 2D models has been carried out. The correction coefficient has been obtained, which allows using the 2D model for multivariate calculations. The relationship of safety factor versus the overall slope angle has been developed. Originality. It has been proved that pit walls retain their stability (the stability factor (SF) is not less than 1.27) while mining the steeply inclined ore body with the transverse panels from top to bottom within each newly cut layer, despite the increasing depth of mining. It is shown that modeling of the real geological structure of a three-dimensional rock mass area factors into the decrease in (by 7%) the safety factor in comparison with the results of the homogeneous model. A probabilistic-statistical approach has been proposed to consider the heterogeneity of the rock mass and avoid unreasonably optimistic forecasts of the pit wall stability. It is shown that 3D modeling gives SF, which differs by 8% from the values obtained in the 2D model. This allows substantiating the correction coefficient to improve the 2D modeling results. Practical value. The regularity of changes in the pit wall stability has been determined depending on the overall pit slope angle in terms of mining-geological and mining-technical conditions of the Kachar deposit, taking into account the real rock heterogeneity.
